BROADCAST TEAM
Why The Bison?
North Dakota State University's
athletic teams have progressed
from the "Farmers" in
the 1890s, to the "Aggies" in the early
1900s, to the "Bison," North Dakota
State's current athletic symbol. It was
developed by head football coach
Stan Borleske in 1919 because he
and members of the football team
didn't like being known as the Aggies.
Borleske wanted a strong and fi erce
mascot. The Bison was a logical
choice. The great animals once
roamed the North Dakota prairie in
vast numbers, and over the years
Bison athletic teams added an additional
name, the "Thundering Herd."
The Herd
Now this is the law of the prairie
As old and as true as the sky
And the Bison that keep it will prosper
And the Bison that break it will die
As the creeper that girdles
the tree trunk
This law is the fi nal word:
For the strength of the Herd
is the Bison
And the strength of the Bison
is the Herd.
WDAY-AM 970 radio of Fargo has the
exclusive rights as the fl agship station to
broadcast Bison football and basketball.
SCOTT MILLER is the the play-by-play
"Voice of the Bison" in football. Miller is
also the Bison men's basketball play-byplay
voice in the winter, and he handles the
color duties for the Bison women.
Miller has been a collegiate sports
play-by-play radio broadcaster since 1977,
calling games for
Montana State,
Idaho, Eastern
Washington,
Pacifi c Lutheran
and the University
of North Dakota
during that time.
Former NDSU All-American and 11-year
NFL great PHIL HANSEN will handle the
color duties, while WDAY-TV sports director
STEVE HALLSTROM and radio personality
JACK MICHAELS will handle sideline and
locker room interviews.
The Bison gameday format includes a
45-minute pregame show with comments
from both coaches, features, and starting
lineups. Sideline reports are used throughout the game and a complete postgame show
is covered from the press box and locker room areas.
Broadcasts are available on the Internet as well as over the air. Click on the Media
