Hennepin Theatre Trust engages our Twin Cities’ community in many
ways—from offering educational programs to presenting exciting
performing arts productions in our three historic theatres, the State,
Orpheum and Pantages. This year was no exception and we invite
you to learn more about the Trust and its successes during 2007–08
by reading this annual report. As part of our efforts to conserve

Trust has become many things to
many people.
Our programs in 2007–08
attracted nearly 500,000
audience members! Our high
quality education initiatives
served thousands of Twin Citians, enabling Hennepin Theatre Trust
to engage patrons of all ages and myriad interests.
As proprietor of three stunningly restored theatres in downtown
Minneapolis, the Trust also invested resources to ensure that these
historic, architectural gems remain active, vital resources for
our community. Our work continues to preserve these amazing
facilities, each part of the foundation of our region’s own Theatre
Row or “Great White Way.” The State, Orpheum and Pantages
remain vital to today's thriving Twin Cities’ cultural scene.
In 2007–08, we proudly brought to the Twin Cities an
extensive range of programs—from touring Broadway theatre

Hennepin Theatre Trust is a multi-faceted organization and
we realize that in-depth understanding of the entirety of the
Trust’s activities can be diluted by the numerous roles we fulfill in
our community.
productions to music, dance, comedy and premiere speakers in
literature, photography and adventure. Our education initiatives
inspired the next generation of artists and audiences, especially
through our flagship SpotLight Musical Theatre Program for high
schools. Additional students and families were served through
programs including Critical View for student reviewers, Teen Ushers
and free Ticket Access, as well as student matinees featuring
National Geographic Live! adventurers.
As a leader of the Hennepin Theatre District, the Trust initiated
efforts to beautify and enhance Hennepin Avenue. Through our
involvement in the launch of Hennepin Avenue’s own Minnesota
Proud Walk of Fame, the Utility Art Box Program and partnerships with
neighboring restaurants, hotels and sponsors, the Trust has created
a more welcoming environment for theatregoers while generating
business activity that positively impacts the economic vitality
of the area. We are proud to serve our community in numerous
ways and appreciate our patrons’ support which made these
accomplishments possible.

For example, the students in our SpotLight Musical Theatre
Program may be most familiar with the Trust as a supporter of
their high school musical program. Broadway patrons might
know the Trust primarily for first-rate touring productions
such as Disney’s The Lion King or Avenue Q. Patrons attending
our Literary Legends or National Geographic Live! Speakers’ Series
may believe these presentations are our specialty, while fans of
today’s music and comedy scenes look to the Trust for the best in
live entertainment.
At Hennepin Theatre Trust, we believe that it is these diverse
components of our work that enable us to touch, engage and
enrich our community. In this report, we invite you to learn more
about the full range of the Trust’s activites and to embrace our
refined message by spreading the word about Hennepin Theatre
Trust’s many contributions to the cultural vitality of our region.

and educational pursuits stimulate,
challenge, entertain and inspire our
community. This is apparent in our
offerings to young people and especially
in our distinctive flagship education
initiative, the SpotLight Musical
Theatre Program.

SpotLight Musical Theatre program
This past year, SpotLight supported and celebrated students who
participated in their annual high school musical. Often high school
sports teams are showered with accolades, but SpotLight offers
a broader range of students the chance for formal recognition.
Hennepin Theatre Trust established the SpotLight Musical Theatre
Program after recognizing that none existed to honor excellence in
high school musical theatre. The program utilizes theatre educators
and professionals to attend high school performances and offer
insight and instruction through critical feedback, workshops, a
collaborative conference and awards ceremony.
• In 2007–08, 25 schools and thousands of Twin Cities’ students
participated in the SpotLight Program, receiving recognition and
support from evaluators who provided valuable feedback to schools
and free specialized workshops taught by local theatre artists.
• The program’s culminating event was the SpotLight annual
conference and awards ceremony at the Orpheum Theatre with
more than 450 students performing selections from their own
musicals and receiving awards. The awards recognize high school
musical theatre accomplishments in much the same way the Tony
Awards acknowledge Broadway excellence. The audience of almost
2,000 people, nearly double from the previous year, was entranced
by the wealth of talent on stage.
• Minnetonka High School, a SpotLight participant since the program
began, was honored for having the top musical theatre program in
the state by Minnesota Monthly Magazine, which highlighted the
school's SpotLight honors.

Critical View
Our Critical View student reviewer program made it possible for 35
students and their teachers from the Interdistrict Downtown School
in Minneapolis to work with the Trust’s program manager to attend
and review six Broadway touring shows and meet with professional
theatre critics and other performing arts experts. Students
learned critical thinking and writing skills as they evaluated and
communicated their assessments of these productions.

National Geographic Live! Student Matinees
Four National Geographic Live! speakers, whose specialties ranged
from wild crocodiles to attaching high-tech cameras to land and sea
animals, presented educational programs in the State Theatre to
more than 5200 students and teachers, free of charge. The Trust also
provided reimbursement to schools for transportation costs.

Teen Ushers
Hennepin Theatre Trust’s Teen Usher program helped young people in our
community gain valuable work skills and understand the importance
of patron service. Theatre tours and access to professional staff also
offered opportunities for the teen ushers to deepen their connection
to the theatres and learn about career options in the arts. Some
participants continue to work at the theatres throughout college.

Ticket Access program
With support from Starbucks, the Trust distributed tickets valued
at more than $260,000 to underserved community members. The
program partnered with more than 50 social service and educational
providers including The Aliveness Project, Boys and Girls Club, Project
Success, Volunteers of America, Passage Community Center, St. Louis
Park Senior Center and the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority.

experieNCe
Hennepin Theatre Trust welcomed many patrons through the doors of our historic
State, Orpheum and Pantages theatres, serving performing arts aficionados and new
audiences alike. The broad spectrum of attractions ranged from the Broadway classic
My Fair Lady and the sold-out performance of the hilarious Flight of the Conchords, to
Rain—The Beatles Experience and comedic talent Jon Stewart.

2007–08 PRESENTING HIGHLIGHTS “Art is my passion. I’m thrilled to help make Hennepin
Avenue a true art destination.”
Broadway touring productions
Minneapolis became the fi rst market to host Disney’s The Lion King
for the third time, and our fi ve-week Minneapolis engagement reached
nearly 100% capacity crowds. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of this
phenomenonal show, the Trust collaborated with Disney to provide
complimentary tickets to students at the Lincoln International Downtown
High School. Many who attended were recent East African immigrants,
who experienced their fi rst encounter with Broadway live theatre!
Avenue Q – This production of the 2004 Tony Award Winner for Best
Musical grew in popularity during its two-week run through lively
word-of-mouth and innovative marketing efforts including some
creative puppet art that was a huge hit on billboards. Generating
many new fans among college students, the show tried to answer the
time-worn question of “What do you do with a B.A. in English?”
Jersey Boys – This 2006 Tony Award Winner for Best Musical is the
hit song-punctuated story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. The
five-week Orpheum engagement was the talk of the town, with many
patrons seeing the show multiple times. You couldn’t miss the buzz in
the local media.

The Trust, in collaboration with The Loft Literary Center, initiated our
first Literary Legends series that featured poet Mary Oliver, authors
Armistead Maupin and Khaled Hosseini, historian David McCullough
and humorist David Sedaris.
The Trust’s multi-year partnership with National Geographic Live!
continued with four exciting and engaging speakers presenting both
student matinees and evening events.

Hennepin Theatre Trust continues to
preserve, maintain and improve the
State, Orpheum and Pantages Theatres
to ensure these venues operate
smoothly into the future. Walking
down Hennepin Avenue today, it’s hard
to imagine it without the theatres’
glowing marquees, but in the 1970s
and 1980s, these buildings were either
shuttered or operating sporadically.
Today, only four of more than 30 original historic theatres in
Minneapolis exist. Initially part of downtown’s active “Theatre Row,”
the State, Orpheum and Pantages are inextricably linked to the past,
present and future vitality of the region and Hennepin Theatre Trust is
proud to be steward for these prestigious venues.
In 2007–08, we implemented the first phase of our capital
improvement schedule, overseeing nearly $1.5 million to upgrade
the Orpheum Theatre lobby by making the beverage service stations
more efficient and adding flat screen televisions (courtesy of Toshiba).
To increase the comfort of theatergoers, lighting, heating and air
conditioning systems were improved, seats were repaired, restrooms
remodeled, stage floors resurfaced and the marquee rewired.
As anyone who has ever restored an old, yet cherished, treasure
knows, it takes more than a little elbow grease to complete the
job. We thank our supporters for their dedication to preserving our
historic theatres.

a leader in the Hennepin theatre District
Downtown Partners. In addition to Hennepin Theatre Trust’s core
presenting and preservation activities, the Trust works closely with
premier Minneapolis hotels and restaurants to enhance the experience
of our patrons. Our partnerships, key in making the Hennepin Theatre
District an exciting and inviting destination, grew substantially as
the interest in better serving visitors to the area reached an all-time
high. Local restaurant partners include Bellanotte, The Capital Grille,
Chambers, Cosmos, Manhattan’s, Mission, Palomino, Seven The
Steakhouse and Solera. Hotel partners include The Grand, Graves 601
and the Marquette.
The Minnesota Proud Walk of Fame, honoring Minnesota celebrities
in the film and entertainment industry, was launched in 2007–08
with the Trust’s support. Stars to be imbedded in the Hennepin
Avenue sidewalk were presented to Marion Ross of “Happy Days,”
Tippi Hedren of Hitchcock’s “The Birds” and Loni Anderson of
“WKRP in Cincinnati,” with ongoing plans to honor many more
talented Minnesotans.
The Utility Art Box Program was among the projects led by the
Trust to make Hennepin Avenue more attractive and pedestrian
friendly. The Trust, working with the City of Minneapolis, solicited
proposals to select artists who transformed non-descript metal utility
boxes up and down the street into works of art based on a theme
from Shakespeare.

Engaging Our audiences in an
Electronic Era
The Trust continued to embrace many tools to engage
audiences in an era that relies more on electronic and cyberbased
communications and less on hard copy materials.
Through online marketing, promotional emails and the
monthly Hennepin Theatre Trust Insider newsletter, we seek to
extend the conversation without a paper trail.
• During 2007–08, nearly 4.5 million emails were delivered
to members and tickets buyers.
• The Trust’s online Insider newsletter, emailed monthly to
more than 3500 people, continued its above industry
standards readership rate.
• The HennepinTheatreDistrict.org
website averaged 250,025 hits per
month in 2007–
08, an increase
of more than
40% from the
previous year.

Hennepin Theatre Trust Members Fred and Ann Moore engage in a significant two-way relationship
with the Trust. They enjoy attending performances and their level of commitment to Downtown and

Engaging Our patrons –
a two way street
Hennepin Theatre Trust would not be able to accomplish
as much as it does without the people who invest energy
and resources. Engaging our patrons in the Trust’s work is
an important two-way endeavor. This past year, we made
significant gains in achieving our development goals with a
consistently high 85% donor retention rate, growth in new
Broadway season subscriptions and several new corporate
relationships.

Q. There are many organizations seeking donations, why did you
choose to support Hennepin Theatre Trust and Critical View in particular?
A. As Downtown residents, we view the theatres as “just down the
street treasures” and know the value they add to our community.
We’ve always enjoyed ourselves at the theatres and feel strongly
about the need to support them. We are very interested in educational
opportunities for young people and know Critical View provides students
with arts experiences they might not otherwise have, like seeing
Broadway shows and interacting with local theatre critics. We met
some of them before Sweeney Todd last season and could tell they were
really interested in the show. They had studied the London time period,
seen the movie and read about the stage version.
Q. How do you think the Trust’s programming impacts our community?
A. The depth of programming was a surprise to us. It’s so much more
than just Broadway! We love how the different shows draw such a
variety of audiences to downtown Minneapolis and Hennepin Avenue
and seeing people experience the restored theatres for the first time
is always a delight. It’s great to see so much traffic in the heart
of the city and know the theatres have a significant investment in
downtown entertainment.
Q. What’s your favorite show you’ve seen at the Trust’s State,
Orpheum and Pantages Theatres?
A. A mix of shows from the past few years comes to mind because
they were all wonderful and different in their own way. Of course,
Wicked and Lion King were the big blockbusters but we thought Doubt
was a dramatic and moral stunner. The shows have created some
wonderful memories. We thought the production of Sweeney Todd at
the State Theatre was better than the one we saw in New York!
Q. How have you introduced friends and family members to the Trust?
A. By taking them to a performance! It’s important to let people
know ticket prices alone are not sufficient to maintain these great
theatres and additional support is needed to sustain the high quality
of entertainment the Trust presents. Preserving these theatres did not
happen and will not happen without the concerted support of a group
of dedicated people.

This past year was full of successes made possible by our supporters’ engagement with Hennepin Theatre Trust. We thank you for making
our work this year possible.
When i contribute to the Trust, where do
my dollars go?
Why does the Trust ask for your support? Wasn’t Disney’s
The Lion King enough to fill the Trust’s bank account for a
good, long time? In a word, ‘no.’ Extravagant shows are
expensive to present and can be risky when costs exceed the
proceeds. Ticket sales from Broadway touring productions
do not cover the Trust’s costs to carry out its year-long,
multi-faceted mission. For nearly every show we bring to
our stages, the Trust must cover the operating expenses
of the theatres, as well as the “guarantee” promised to an
artist or show producer in addition to labor, musicians,
security and insurance. So The Lion King’s ticket sales alone,
for example, didn’t fully support the Trust’s 2007–08
educational programming, theatre preservation work or other
basic costs. This is why we ask for and very much appreciate
your contributions.
