ODAY’S game pits us
against the Premiership’s
in-form side and
we know we’ll have to
produce a top performance if
we are to get the three points
that we want.
Coleraine are a quality team who
don’t lose too many matches
and, with momentum firmly
behind them, they’ll be coming
here to consolidate their push
for honours at the top of the
table.
Behind them and Linfield, there
are a number of teams who all
have their eyes on what could
yet be the last remaining automatic
European place - and we
are firmly in that mix.
Obviously it will all come down
to what happens with the Irish
Cup and how the Play-Offs are
impacted but, regardless, we
want to close in on third place in
the table and our own form gives
me encouragement that we can
get there.
A lot has been said about the
amount of matches teams are
being asked to play at the minute
with a seemingly neverending
run of Saturday-Tuesday-
Saturday-Tuesday fixtures, but
don’t forget that was us not so
long ago and the amount of
points we picked up during January
and February was a credit to
the players’ fitness and application.

We were the only team who went
through that at that particular
time, but it has been beneficial to
get back into a proper training
routine over the last few weeks.
The Tuesday night matches will
resume for us in a few days’ time
and, with the games coming
thick and fast, every single point
will be hard won.
That was certainly the case
against Larne last weekend,
when both teams pretty much
cancelled the other out.
Aaron McCarey made a couple of
really good saves in the firsthalf
and we went close
through Ryan Curran and Ryan
O’Reilly but, after the break,
there was very little to report.
Larne enjoyed a
decent spell and
then so did we. We
could have nicked
the win at the end
but I don’t think
anyone could
argue that a draw
wasn’t the right
outcome.
The players
worked their
socks off from
start to finish
against a very
strong opponent
and the
same will be
required
this afternoon
but I
have every
faith they’ll
be up to the
challenge and
can come
away with the
outcome
we’ve
worked
week
all
to
obtain.

ARON McCarey believes
he’s rediscovering his
best form thanks to a
sustained run of games
between the posts for Cliftonville.
The 29-year-old goalkeeper
joined the Club in January after a
frustrating spell at Dundalk,
where he found himself playing
second fiddle to the legendary
Gary Rogers, and says he’s thoroughly
enjoying life back in the
Danske Bank Premiership.
“I’m loving it,” asserts the former
Warrenpoint Town custodian,
who featured for the Republic of
Ireland at various underage
levels.
“I think initially when I came in, I
knew and Paddy (McLaughlin)
knew himself that it was going to
take me five-six games to get up
to the speed of things.
“Realistically, I hadn’t played for
two years and ended up coming
into the Club with a niggling
injury and it held me back a little
bit - I’m not one for making excuses.
“I’ve played about 14-15 games
and I’m a firm believer that a
goalkeeper needs a run of
games. I’ve been given that opportunity
and I feel like I’m starting
to prove myself.
“I know I don’t have to prove
myself to the lads but I have to
with people outside Cliftonville
and that.
“I really am enjoying it, it’s a
great group of lads and a very
talented squad. Hopefully we
can have a great end to the season
and see where it takes us.”
McCarey arrived at Solitude just
in time for a whirlwind run of
fixtures that saw Cliftonville race
ahead of everyone else in the
League in terms of games played
over a hectic January and February
schedule.
While other sides have caught up
on that particular front in recent
weeks, that burst of matches
gave McCarey and his new teammates
some up close and personal
experience of a host of
opponents - and the ex-Wolves
man is well aware of the threat
that will be posed by this afternoon’s
visitors.
“Coleraine is another difficult
game, they’re coming thick and
fast and Coleraine are going
well,” says McCarey, who was
one of seven January recruits
who featured in a 2-2 draw with
the Bannsiders just under eight
weeks ago.
“I felt that the last time out
against Coleraine, we dropped
two points if we’re being brutally
honest.
“We’ll be looking to target the
game to get back to winning
ways because all points are vital
at this stage of the season.
“If we want to meet our targets
then we have to pick up three
points on a regular basis.”
McCarey certainly played his part
in helping the Reds see off Glenavon
in their last home game
and also produced stellar performances
in recent away day battles
with Linfield and Larne - with
last week’s goalless encounter
at Inver Park providing mixed
emotions at the end of a tense
duel that could have gone either
way.
“It was probably a point gained if
you look back on it and reflect on
it overall,” adds the Monaghan
man.
“I thought towards the last 15
minutes of the second-half that
we were probably the team that
were going to go on and win it.
But in my opinion, I thought the
two teams cancelled each other
out in the second-half.
“If there was any team that was
going to go on and win it, it was
probably us.
“Overall I think a draw was probably
a fair result.”

NBEATEN in their last
17 games and with 13
wins during that run,
it’s little wonder
there’s growing belief that
Coleraine can upset the odds to
land the Danske Bank Premiership
title.
Tuesday’s draw with Glenavon at
Mourneview Park may have been
the first time the Bannsiders had
dropped points since being held
to a goalless stalemate by Linfield
in February, but it did nudge
Oran Kearney’s men closer to the
Blues, over whom they hold two
games in hand with which to eat
into the seven point deficit at the
summit.
Having started their domestic
season in less than convincing
style in the aftermath of some
never-to-be-forgotten European
heroics, Coleraine slowly but
surely found their stride as
Christmas approached and they
simply haven’t looked back since
then.
Indeed, it was a 2-0 win over
Cliftonville at Solitude that
helped ease them out of the
doldrums they had inexplicably

sunk into but which have now
been firmly left in the past as the
Ballycastle Road outfit continue
to stake their claim for end-ofterm
honours.
Though the opening weeks of
the season provided no reason
to suggest that anything other
than another title push was on
the cards, an horrific November -
during which just a single point
was banked in advance of successive
defeats to Crusaders,
Linfield and Larne - gave way to
an ominous December which
began with a fourth straight loss,
this time at the hands of Dungannon
Swifts.
A battling win against Warrenpoint
Town - when the Bannsiders
sealed victory just minutes
after their visitors looked to
have secured a last-gasp point -
was the catalyst Kearney’s men
needed to step things up and
2020 duly ended with that aforementioned
success at Solitude.
Four wins from four in January
saw Carrick Rangers, Dungannon,
Larne and the Crues dispatched
in a perfect start to the
New Year and, though both Cliftonville
and Portadown would
earn draws at The Showgrounds,
Coleraine returned to winning
ways by seeing off derby rivals
Ballymena United and Carrick
either side of that 0-0 draw away
to the Blues.
Another narrow win over Warrenpoint
maintained momentum
going into March, which commenced
with a comfortable
defeat of the Ports and hardfought
success against Dungannon
at Stangmore Park - scene
of the team’s last Premiership
reverse back at the start of December.
The Crues and Carrick were both
overcome again ahead of Tuesday’s
trek to Lurgan, where Stephen
Lowry’s 76th minute leveller
earned a point and an extension
of that unbeaten run.
With Larne, Glenavon and - arguably
most crucial of all - Linfield
tests in store in the aftermath of
today’s joust with Cliftonville, it
goes without saying just how
important a positive result this
afternoon would be for Kearney
and co’s bid to finally get to grips
with the Gibson Cup.
