Story Factory to benefit from unique art exhibition and silent auction

The Story Factory in Parramatta is
set to receive donated artworks
from over 40 of Australia’s leading
contemporary artists, as part of a special
fundraising exhibition to be held next
month.
The exhibition will include artworks by
Guy Maestri Euan Macleod, Louise Olsen,
Fiona Lowry, Chris Langlois, Blak Douglas
and Leila Jeffreys, with auction proceeds
to go to the Story Factory.
The not-for-profit was established in
2012 by Sydney Morning Herald journalists,
Dr Cath Keenan and Tim Dick, offering
creative writing workshops for youth
marginalised by socio-economic circumstances
or their cultural and linguistic
background.
The aim of the Story Factory is to help
young people, who are most at risk of losing
confidence and switching off at school, to
find their voice through creative writing.
The exhibition was originally scheduled to
run in March last year but was cancelled a
week out due to the escalating COVID-19
situation at the time.
The auction is the Story Factory’s opportunity
to raise funds to help deliver their
workshops across Sydney for more than
5,000 students each year.
Dr Keenan said COVID-19 has caused
the existing educational gap of three years
between advantaged and disadvantaged
students to widen by close to an additional
school term. She says the exacerbation
of existing inequalities highlights the
need for Story Factory’s programs that
re-engage students in their learning.
“We know that stories have the power to
change lives,” she said.
“Our storytelling workshops have been
designed by experts to build literacy,
confidence, and creativity; essential skills
young people need to shape their future.”
Artist Telly Tu’u, who has donated work
to the auction, said the mission of the notfor-profit
hits close to home for him
“I’ve been there, I know what it is like to
walk into a classroom and not understand
what the teacher is talking about,” he said.
The exhibition will run from April 6 at the
Olsen Annexe, 74 Queen Street, Woollahra.
