TWIN LAKES SHARE & PRAYER

In the Bible it is recorded that God (Yahweh) appeared many times before

the time of Jesus, with Adam and Eve in the Garden, later with Abraham,

speaking to him; it’s recorded in Genesis 21 that He heard the voice of

Abraham’s son Ishmael, that he honored her by sending an angel to

speak to Hagar to comfort her and provide food and water for her and her

son in the desert and promising a future to him. God was with him when

he grew and developed. He spoke to Moses as a friend and protected the

people of Israel as they wandered in the desert; in many other ways God

appears.

Then in the New Testament it is said by John, “In the beginning was the

Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. In Him was

life and that life is the light of all mankind.” John goes on to say that “The

Word was made flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen

his glory... full of grace and truth.” It is this Jesus, also called Immanuel

(meaning God with us), that opens the way to us to God. In the Jewish

temple at the time of Christ there was a tremendously thick curtain, a

veil, that separated a section of the temple called “The Holiest of Holies.”

Astonishingly, at the very time that Jesus died on the cross, that veil was

torn right down the middle. This was symbolic of Jesus opening the

way to God for us by voluntarily paying for our sins on the cross... and

overcoming death by being raised to life again! The fact that all of his

disciples were willing to go to their death, most by being killed brutally

without every denying this is a strong testament to the veracity of the

resurrection of Jesus. It is this very thing that we celebrate from Good

Friday to Easter, this Immanuel who brings new life and hope to those

who humble themselves to receive Him.

The Share and Prayer group will be meeting alternate Tuesday evenings

at 6:45 and beginning April 6 th , in person again! April 6 th and 20 th , May 4 th

and 18 th are the getting-together times for these two months. We hang

out and chat, gather around the Word and grow in faith and friendship

together. Any honest seeker and resident of Twin Lakes is welcome to

join in. Contact Patty Napp at Patricia.napp@woodgroup.com or Carol

him at broberts@bikehouston.org.

Students will learn basic bike handling skills and the fundamentals

of riding safely on streets and roads. There will be about 1-1/2 hours

of classroom instruction and 2 hours of on-bike practice. The on-bike

practice will be mostly parking lot drills, finishing with a short, slow

paced group ride on quiet residential streets.

Minimum age is 13 years (no maximum!). Students must be able to

balance their bike while riding. Separate learn-to-ride classes can be

arranged through the instructor. The class will cover how to safely start

and stop, shift gears, turn and avoid obstacles. The lecture portion will

cover rules of the road, where and how to ride safely, signaling and more.

April 2021 | Twin Lakes

Students will provide their own bicycle. A helmet and appropriate

footwear are mandatory. Upon request, we will inspect your bicycle

before the class for key safety items including tire pressure, brakes and

chain condition.

To minimize the spread of COVID-19, the training will be held outdoors

with natural ventilation. We will require participants to wear face masks

except when on the bicycle. We will maintain 6-foot separation during

the group ride and during the classroom instruction under the roof. The

instructor may approach within 6 feet during the parking lot drills.

Proceeds from the class will be donated to BikeHouston.org. In the event

of rain, the class will be held at the same time Saturday, April 17, 2021.

10 TIPS FOR A CLEANER REFRIGERATOR

1. Create a homemade all-purpose cleaner by combining the following in a

gallon of hot water: 1 cup clear ammonia, ½-cup vinegar and ¼-cup baking

soda. Pour into a spray bottle or use from a bowl with a sponge. This norinse

formula is a degreaser that prevents mold and mildew. Wipe down the

entire refrigerator with this solution, including the drawers and shelves.

2. To prevent grease and odor buildup on top of the refrigerator after

you’ve cleaned it, just buff some paste wax into the surface.

3. Use toothpaste to remove tough stains. It contains a gentle abrasive

and has a pleasant odor.

4. To get those dust bunnies out from under the refrigerator, remove the

grill and run a yardstick covered with a pair of pantyhose underneath.

Also check the pan of water under the unit, since it can hold unpleasantsmelling

water.

5. To combat household odors, fill a clean old sock with activated charcoal

from an aquarium store, tie a knot in the top and place it in the back of

the refrigerator. This will last a month or two, depending on the size of

your refrigerator and how heavily you use it.

6. For a faster fix for odors, sprinkle vanilla extract on some cotton balls,

place in a shallow dish and put in the refrigerator. Orange extract also

works.

7. Eliminate lingering odors in your vegetable bins by putting a crumpled

piece of a brown paper grocery bag inside and leaving it for 48 hours. The

paper will absorb the odor.

8. Check for adequate tightness of the insulating seam around the door

by placing a lighted flashlight inside the refrigerator and closing the door.

Turn off the lights in the room (this should be done at night) and see if

any light escapes from the seams. This will help you pinpoint any leaks.

9. If you don’t keep your refrigerator full, fill a large bottle (at least a gallon)

with water and leave it in the refrigerator. It helps keep the refrigerator

cool and running efficiently.

10. Keep your refrigerator at 37 degrees. Source: www.hgtv.com

We have done everything we can to try and reopen our doors, including

“I would highly recommend using Marcos A/C. It was an

outstanding experience and our new A/C unit works

great! Mike was awesome! He helped us through the

entire process and demonstrated professionalism,

thorough knowledge of the product, and was super

friendly. Alex and his team of installers were very

efficient and friendly on the day of installation as well.

Overall, an excellent experience! ~ Nick P.

April Gardening Tips

Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging helps eliminate a great

many pests that die from various causes while in the bag. When you buy

‘loose’ mulch that is trucked to your home, you are also buying ants,

roaches, termites, etc…” Spend a little more on bagged material and save

lots of future pest problems. Keep your mulch at least 4” - 6” below the top

of your homes exposed foundation edge/side. This will aid in minimizing

pests in your home and allow for quick and accurate termite inspections.

Shrubs, Flowers and ground covers - Trim all shrubs/plants at least 12” -

18” back from your home. Do your best to create a plant free zone that is

18” - 24” wide around your home. The exception is your lawn - it can grow

up next to the slab as long as you keep it 4” - 6” below the top of the slab.

The most conducive to termite infestation are groundcover plantings,

growing high against your homes exterior or (especially) ivy that grows

on your walls.

Trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually. The spring spray

eliminates overwintering pests and fungi while preparing trees to resist

the pest onslaught of summer with residual pesticides. The fall spray also

kills pests from the summer, prevents most fungi from occurring over the

winter and puts your valuable asset off to a healthy winter’s dormancy.

Lawn - Spring is the perfect time to do a fungicide treatment to stop

brown patch in its tracks along with other fungi. If your lawn is thin and

weak in some areas, here are some important fundamentals: a) lawn

aeration” b) fertilization” c) weed control.

Most important is proper watering:

• Water once per week (unless you get a 1/2” rain or more - then do not

water.)

• Water heavily (1” - 2”) for total lawn coverage.

• In severe drought, water every 5th day.

• Water from 5 AM to 7 AM in the morning - NOT AT NIGHT.

• A heavy deep weekly watering makes the turf grow deeper, stronger

and more drought resistant roots.

• Less watering also saves you money!!

TAX TIP FOR APRIL

As I write this, the American Rescue Plan Act (HR 1319)

is expected to be signed into law soon. There are

provisions in this bill that affect 2020 taxes retroactively.

For example, up to $10,200 of unemployment benefits

(normally fully taxable) can be excluded if you qualify.

If you have not filed your 2020 return yet, hold off! There

may be a change in the law that affects you.

WHEN IS EARTH DAY?

This observance always falls on April 22 nd . On Earth Day, enjoy the tonic

of fresh air, contact with the soil and companionship with nature! Walk

through the woods in search of emerging wildflowers and green moss.

Go outside, no matter what the weather!

Ever wondered how Earth Day started? This observance arose from an

interest in gathering national support for environmental issues. In 1970,

San Francisco activist John McConnell and Wisconsin Senator Gaylord

Nelson separately asked Americans to join in a grassroots demonstration.

McConnell chose the spring equinox (March 21, 1970) and Nelson chose

April 22 nd . Millions of people participated and today Earth Day continues

to be widely celebrated with events on both dates.

The most common practice of celebration is to plant new trees for Earth

Day. Other Earth Day activities and ideas are: Plant wildflowers, Go

native! Plants thrive when they’re natural to your area, bring nature into

the garden with plants that attract butterflies, try an organic vegetable

garden and conserve water.
