Protest Saftey:
This section is full of information and
resources to help you stay safe while
protesting in the middle of a pandemic….
BEWARE THE DIGITAL
EYE:
DO NOT take pictures at protests
without blurring out the faces of
protesters. Pictures and videos could
be used by the police to track down
protesters.
Your digital footprint can be a detrimental
factor when it comes to protesting. Please
consider these following things before
posting on social media/protesting:
● When orginising DO NOT use messaging
apps without end-to-end encryption
(Doesn't have any access to contents of
your messages) I've read that signal is
the best app to use in this situation.
● Use a secure web browser. No, Chrome
doesn't count. I recommend Tor, It's
really secure and your browsing history
will not be tracked.
● Bridgefy is an messaging app that only
uses Bluetooth as the source for
communication.
● GET A VPN! you should do this
regardless of whether or not you're
protesting. If you don't already know
VPN stands for Virtual Privacy Network.
It provides you with online autonomy
and saftey.
If possible leave your phone at home but if
you do choose to bring it please consider
the information given below:
● When at a protest turn off face ID/ touch
ID on your phone. The police can use it
to forcibly unlock your phone.
● Turn location services off for all apps.
● Keep in mind that turning off your
cellphone doesn't stop location services.
● Lastly, don't use Facebook. At all.
I GOT TEAR-GASSED
What now??
1.Make sure not to wear any makeup /contact lenses
when going to protests.
2.DO NOT touch your face or skin
3.Rinse eyes thoroughly with clean water, NOT
MILK. Do not let the water run down your body.
4.Move towards the wind so teargas can blow off
you (It is actually a very fine powder not a
gas)
5.Allow your body to get rid of all the excess
teargas still in your system. This happens by
coughing,runny nose, teary eyes.
6.Try to get the majority of teargas off your
clothes then remove your clothes and wash them
emedietly. Teargas stick to your clothes, skin
and hair until you wash them.
7.When showering wash your hair in a sink first
then take a shower, with cool water. DO NOT
breath in more teargas.
5.) You have the right to record/film
the police if you or anyone else's
saftey feels threatened by them.
●If you do end up getting
questioned by the
police try to stay calm at
all times.
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
WHEN BEING ARRESTED :
What does a lawful arrest look like?
● The police must tell you when you
are under arrest. If not the arrest
is unlawful.
● Police must have control over you
(physically) when arrest is being
made. If not it is an unlawful
arrest.
● Police must clearly state the
reason of your arrest for it to be
lawful.
What happens when I'm in custody?
● You must be taken to the police station
asap, unless a warrent says otherwise.
(There will most probably not be an
arrest warrent if arrest is conducted
protest setting)
● After being identified at the
processing center/station you will most
probably be placed in a holding cell.
You might get interrogated, if so try
to get legal assistance to help you
through any legal charges.
