A SURGE in petty crime across
suburbs in the north and west
has prompted more community
patrols and the establishment of
an anti-crime initiative.
Stolen vehicles, car and house
break-ins, or graffiti are just some
of the problems residents say have
increased in St Albans and Edgeware
in recent weeks.
St Albans Residents’
Association chairman Jason
Harvey has noticed an influx
of posts about crime in
neighbourhood groups on
Facebook, like the St Albans –
Christchurch Community Group.
Places like empty building sites
in St Albans were a magnet for
trouble, he said.
“There’s been a lot of posts
about things getting stolen,
vehicle break-ins, even house
break-ins.
“It’s really good news that the
community patrol is taking that
proactive approach.”
Interest sought to form Lions Club
• By Bea Gooding
BELFAST AND Northwood
residents may soon have a Lions
Club to call their own if there is
enough interest.
After the Riccarton-Waimairi
Lions Club helped build a vegetable
garden at Belfast School
earlier this year, further school
and community projects were
identified in the area.
Discussions with local groups
like the Belfast Community
Network led to an opportunity
to form a Lions Club which
solely targets the Belfast and
Northwood area.
New club development consultant
John Benefield said Belfast
School was an example of
why Lions assistance was needed
to get community projects off
the ground, especially if other
funding dried up.
And when the former
Christchurch North club in
Papanui closed down a few
months ago due to ageing
members, it left a gap in the
area.
Said Benefield: “Belfast School
will be split into two sites. The
existing site is being remodelled
and the new site on Johns Rd is
going to be for seniors. But the
Ministry of Education won’t
HELPING OUT: Lions Club members are synonymous for community projects.
provide things like gardens, tool
sheds or landscaping because
it’s not deemed as a new school,
therefore the cost falls back on
the community.”
Lions Clubs International
is a service organisation that
undertakes community projects
and is a chance for members to
give back.
It meets with representatives
like schools, police, churches,
and youth group leaders to identify
what is needed to make their
community a more attractive
place to live.
Many community projects
which meet the criteria can be
eligible for funding grants and
assistance from within Lions
organisations.
“After we finish assisting
with the development of Belfast
School’s remodelled site, there
are going to be a lot of potential
projects and I can see a Lions
Club working alongside the city
council and the community
board to improve amenities
around Belfast and Northwood,”
Benefield said.
•If you are interested in
taking part, head along
to the meeting on April
13 at Belfast Community
Network, 7.30pm.
In Brief
DOG PARK MAY BE
RENAMED
The Fendalton-Waimairi-
Harewood Community Board are
investigating options to rename
The Groynes Dog Park to honour a
former community board member.
City council staff will report back
to the board on whether or not to
rename it to the Yvonne Palmer
Dog Park in honour of the former
Shirley/Papanui Community
Board chairwoman of more than
20 years. Palmer has devoted
decades of her life to public service,
particularly for the elderly. Last
year she was diagnosed with
Guillain-Barre syndrome and was
left fighting for her life while in
intensive care for several weeks.
PLEA TO FIX TOILET BLOCK,
NETBALL COURTS
The Belfast Netball Club has
written to the Fendalton-
Waimairi-Harewood and Papanui-
Innes community boards about
fixing the Belfast netball courts
and toilet blocks. The courts need
replacing as it poses health and
safety risks, including flooding and
cracked concrete, after minimal
upgrades in the past 20 years.
Repairs have been included in the
city council’s 2021-2031 Long Term
Plan, but the club wants it fixed
sooner rather than later for the
upcoming season.
Community patrol
identifies hot spots
and acts as deterrent
• From page 1
Community patrol chairman
John Hewitson said volunteers
work closely with police, who
often assign tasks and request
their presence in problem areas
they identified.
Merely driving a patrol
car down a street acted as a
deterrent, because criminals
know they are being watched.
“We’re forewarned if there’s
an area [with] a lot of burglaries,
and St Albans has come up on
that list. It comes and goes, but
it just seems to get worse in St
Albans,” he said.
“Four-wheel-drives have been
taken, bike thefts in another area
and Stanmore Rd is quite a hot
spot.
“If we see anything we report
it to the police, but we don’t put
ourselves in danger because
we’re volunteers. Visibility of the
car is the deterrent more than
anything else.”
Police did not respond to
questions asked by Nor’West
News by deadline. But last
week they warned residents to
remain vigilant after 166 bike
thefts worth the equivalent of
$250,000 have been stolen in
the past six weeks around the
central city.
Meanwhile, a Community
Safety Initiative Working Group
has been formed to also address
growing crimes of a similar
nature in Bishopdale, as well as
Avonhead and Russley.
The group, which involves
Neighbourhood Support
Canterbury and the
Christchurch North Community
Patrol, will facilitate residents
providing informal feedback
to self-identify any hot spots to
focus on.
It aimed to help residents
feel safe by recognising and
resourcing where possible based
on the feedback, and supported
opportunities for community
partnerships and activities to
respond to their issues.
“The group looked at recorded
evidence and police reported
statistics; an increase was not
clearly shown in these statistics.
It is possible that the crimes,
while being reported on social
media, are not perhaps being
reported to more official
sources,” a Fendalton-Waimairi-
Harewood Community Board
area report for March read.
New mural delights children
at not-for-profit pre-school
CHILDREN at the Christchurch
Methodist Mission’s early
childhood service arrived at
the centre last week to see a
vibrant new mural outside their
premises.
Spanning two walls, the mural
features Aratupu’s signature
piwakawaka, as well as totara
and other flora and fauna
that were once indigenous to
Papanui.
The children loved the huge
piwakawaka, the baby birds and
the ladybird in particular.
The mural adds much-needed
colour to a busy stretch of Harewood
Rd, enhancing the area
with a joyful example of public
art for all to appreciate.
CMM is grateful for funding
from the Papanui-Innes Community
Board, Creative New
Zealand and other generous
Aratupu funders.
“Thanks also to chile_onenz of
the New Brighton Outdoor Art
Foundation for his design and
talented artwork,” said a CMM
spokeswoman.
The mural completes the
exterior revamp of the building,
which was last year enhanced
with the new Aratupu logo.
Aratupu is a not-for-profit
preschool that offers quality education
to children from threemonths-old
to school age.
Its last Education Review
Office report found Aratupu
promoted positive learning
outcomes for tamariki, with
teachers demonstrating a strong
commitment to the centre’s
philosophy, vision and values
of a socially just and inclusive
society.
Aratupu is run by the
Methodist Mission.
Aratupu staff include a
whānau support worker, an
on-site social worker dedicated
to helping whānau resolve any
issues or problems that may
require particular support.
New entrants were welcome.
Removal of car parks questioned Discovery
• From page 1
Transport planning and
delivery manager Lynette Ellis
did not specify whether this was
an oversight by the city council
but said it takes time to apply for
and get the authority.
Association president Dr
Garth Wilson
said residents
were not only
frustrated the
work would
take longer,
but they
also did not
Catherine
Chu
think the city
council were
transparent
enough on whether it was an
error on their behalf.
Residents were also inconvenienced
as some equipment, such
as barriers, road cones or signage
remained on the road while
the consent awaited approval.
Riccarton ward councillor
Catherine Chu did not respond
to Western News questions by
the deadline.
Said Wilson: “The council sent
a letter to residents but it didn’t tell
the whole truth, the council was
not transparent to residents about
the cause of the delay and they
didn’t admit it as their error.”
“Residents were inconvenienced
for two months, the
barriers set out on the roadside
adjoined their driveways and
had to stay there.
“How much has this incompetence
by the city council cost the
ratepayer?”
The South Express cycleway
will connect the edge of the city
in Templeton to the central city,
with part of it being built in Riccarton.
Connecting to Ballantyne
Ave from Main South Rd, the
cycleway will make its way
through parts of Suva St, Middleton
Rd and park, Lochee
Rd, Wharenui Rd, Peverel St,
Elizabeth St, Picton Ave and
Blenheim Rd to Hagley Park.
Along the northern side of
Peverel St, on-street parking will
be removed next to Harrington
Park to make way for the 3m,
two-way separated cycleway.
Wainui St resident Stephen
Kennington questioned whether
the removal of parking would
make access to Harrington Park
unsafe for pedestrians.
In the city council’s plan,
raised platforms are being built
at the Piko Cres, Centennial Ave
and Tika St intersections to improve
crossing points and slow
vehicles down as they approach
the road.
“The park is used by families,
on family fun days [there]
hundreds of adults and children
enjoy it,” he said.
“The problem I see is that
the cycleway is being placed
on the Harrington Park side
of Peverel St; losing the shady
parking. It will entail crossing
the street and a two-way cycle
lane to access the park from
parking on the other side of the
street.
“Is that a great idea?”
Ellis said the north side of
Peverel St was chosen to provide
better access for people walking
or biking to and through the
park.
It minimises the number
of vehicle entranceways the
cycleway needs to cross and
reduces parking impacts on
Harrington Dairy.
But in terms of delays on
Elizabeth St, Ellis said investigation
work on-site was done to
assess whether archaeological
authority was needed.
“It takes some time to apply
for and get an archaeological
authority, as there is some investigation
work that needs to be
done before it can be issued.”
Air Force vet sponsors student for solo flight
WHEN AIR Force veteran
Derrick Hubbard flew solo
on his 90th birthday with the
Canterbury Recreational
Aircraft Club, he and his now
late wife, Vera, decided to pay it
forward.
Now 94, the Summerset at
Wigram retirement village
resident and his wife of 70 years
wanted to sponsor a young
person to experience the same
opportunity.
Derrick, originally from
England, joined the Royal Air
Force as an aircraft apprentice at
RAF Halton in 1943.
After serving as an engineer
alongside some Kiwis in No 24
Squadron during World War 2,
it cemented his desire to move to
New Zealand, which happened
in 1958.
He later joined the RNZAF
where he served for 24 years.
Amid the height of Covid-19
and following his wife’s death
last year, Derrick approached
CRAC flying instructor, Dave
Mitchell, and Air Force Museum
of New Zealand education
officer, Chris Davey, to seek out a
deserving young trainee pilot.
After a rigorous application
process, 16-year-old Rangiora
High School student Armani
Hansen received funding from
Derrick and Vera for lessons on
how to achieve a solo flight.
Armani has had a passion
for flight from a young age and
was already working part-time
at the Rangiora New World
supermarket to save for his longterm
goal to become a pilot.
He was also selected for a
Gateway Aviation programme at
high school to enhance his flight
theory knowledge.
OPPORTUNITY:
Air Force veteran
Derrick Hubbard,
94, and his
late wife, Vera,
sponsored
Armani Hansen,
16, to achieve his
first solo flight.
Flight instructor Mitchell put
Armani through his paces in
weekly flying lessons. At the
Rangiora Airfield last week
Armani was scheduled for a
further flying lesson.
As with most trainee pilots,
he had no prior warning of his
solo flight, as it is only when
the student is deemed ready by
the instructor who gives the goahead
to take off on their own.
With Armani’s family
secretly escorted into the CRAC
clubrooms, the group watched
as Mitchell instructed Armani
through “touch and go”
circuits, before taxiing to the
clubrooms.
“I told him we were taxiing
back to the threshold for another
take-off, and when near the
clubhouse I added – ‘but this
time you are doing it on your
own. I am getting out now’,”
Mitchell said.
With Derrick watching from
his home at Summerset via video
call, Armani took off and did a
circuit of the airfield, with an
empty seat next to him.
As he executed “a textbook
landing,” he finally spotted his
family next to the clubhouse.
Said Armani: “It was a very
exciting and exhilarating
experience that I will never
forget. When Dave got off the
plane and said I was going to
go up solo, I couldn’t keep the
grin off my face, even though it
was nerve-racking; the thought
of knowing that I would be at
1200ft all alone.
“Thank you so much to
Derrick for giving me the
Hubbard flying opportunity
– I will be forever grateful.
Thanks to Chris for all of your
organising and for choosing me,
and to Dave for getting me ready
to go solo.”
Said Armani’s mother Serena:
“I was nervous and scared but,
above all, just so excited for him.
He’s worked so hard and been so
determined to make his dream
of being a pilot come true and
this is an amazing step towards
that goal.”
HOME & HEATING
Ground moisture barrier
under low sub-floor
Now with the colder and wetter weather on
its way, home owners are focusing on ways
to make their homes comfortable, warm
and healthy for their families throughout
winter. Rising damp is an issue that affects
many of our older properties which suffer
from poor, or no, ground moisture barrier.
In Canterbury especially, post-quake, many
people have relocated to homes that suffer
from rising damp which can be associated
with health problems. Independent tests have
shown that up to 40 litres of water can rise
from the ground and enter a house every day,
leading to mildew, mould, condensation and
musty smells. Moulds can produce various
allergic reactions and the frail, elderly and
very young are especially vulnerable.
Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd is a
locally owned and operated firm. The team
understands the problems caused by rising
damp and are there to help. They will come
to your damp home and pump a lightweight,
flowable foam concrete under your timber
floored home.
While insulation is important, it has been
recognised that it is dampness that is the real
villain in the house. The new Healthy Homes
Standards introduced by the government
effective from the 1st July 2019 now has
a requirement to install ground moisture
barriers, a key element in the armory to fight
moisture in the home.
Dr Larry Bellamy BE (hons) PhD in a
report dated 1988: Foam Concrete Under
Timber Floors: An Energy Analysis assessed
the effects of placing Foam Concrete over
damp soil and had this to say: Condensation
on the underside of a timber floor can occur
where the floor is suspended over damp
ground and the inside air temperature falls
close to the crawl space air temperature.
Much energy is required to vaporize moisture
that penetrates the structure. By avoiding
underfloor condensation, foam concrete can
reduce floor heat losses by up to 90%.
• Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd can in most
cases, install a Ground Moisture Barrier
under the suspended wooden floor of your
home, even when there is no crawl space.
ATTACK RISING DAMP
Bathroom ventilation
The extraction of air from the bathroom
should be a priority for all houses and
commercial buildings.
Bathrooms can generate a large quantity
of steam and odours. It is important
this compromised air does not circulate
around the house.
Bathroom odours can be unpleasant,
especially when near living, sleeping or
working areas.
The moisture generated by showers and
baths can be damaging to your home and
furnishings and be a major contribution
to condensation. Damp houses are not a
healthy environment for anyone to live in,
especially for children or other vulnerable
people.
By extracting air from the bathroom to
outside, warmer air from inside the house
will move in to the bathroom. Whereas
opening a window can draw cold air
into the bathroom and blow the smelly,
moisture laden
bathroom air into
the house.
Modern houses
are built to be
very airtight and
require mechanical
ventilation such
as extraction fans
or heat exchanger
systems. Although
older houses can
be draughty, the air
often flows in the
wrong direction.
Therefore, they also
usually require mechanical ventilation to
keep the air quality higher.
The quality of the air we breathe affects
our health and ability to perform. We
breathe in and out approximately 20,000
litres of air every day. It is therefore very
important to ensure good air quality
indoors through adequate ventilation.
To ensure the quality of your air, contact
the experts. Smooth-Air Products can
calculate the required extraction for your
bathrooms, and look into air exchange for
your whole building. Smooth-Air offers a
named decade champion alongside
rowing partner Hamish
Bond at the Halberg Awards, is
the guest speaker.
New Brighton’s team of the
century will also be named at the
function.
“We’re delighted to have about
60 people from Whakarewarewa
down for the weekend,” said
centenary committee chairman
Wayne Turner.
“The club had a very strong relationship
with Whakarewarewa
through the 1970s and 1980s
and we’re keen to rekindle that
relationship.”
The club has laid claim to four
All Blacks, though none are
expected to attend.
New Brighton’s first All
Black, Dr Hugh Burry, played
11 matches on the tour of South
Africa in 1960.
The loose forward, who was
never selected for a test, died in
2013, aged 82.
Hamilton-born prop Kerry
Tanner played for New Brighton
after transferring to Canterbury
from Auckland, where a switch
from loose forward to the front
row led to him playing seven
tests between 1974-76.
Lock Isaac Ross was capped
All Black and Canterbury
prop Kerry Tanner joined
New Brighton after moving
from Auckland.
nine times in 2009 while midfield
back Ryan Crotty is the
club’s most prolific All Black,
playing 48 tests between 2013-19.
Ross and Crotty are currently
playing in Japan while Turner
said Tanner could not be contacted.
However, there will be plenty
of local ‘heroes’ in attendance
with former Canterbury captain
Ian Penrose, the current club
patron, and Wayne Burleigh – a
member of the 1982-85 Ranfurly
Shield era squad leading the way.
Ian Penrose kicking a
penalty goal in the 1970
Canterbury vs Southland
Ranfuly shield match at
Lancaster Park.
Former Crusaders Tyson Keats
and Kieran Fonotia represent a
more recent vintage which also
includes current Crusaders prop
Oliver Jager and hooker Nathan
Vella.
Highlanders flanker Billy
Harmon, who should be in the
city to play his former Super
Rugby team on Friday night,
is also expected to make an
appearance.
The Fisher & Paykel and Haier range of whiteware and cooking are so
beautifully crafted, they really belong in a gallery. Look even closer, and
you’ll find something else quite easy on the eye — the price. And, as with
everything we sell, if you see it cheaper anywhere else, we’ll match it.
