Established in 1894, the club went into recess during the early years, but from 1921 onwards it has enjoyed continuous membership. Hence the 100 year birthday begins from the later date. A humdinger of a party is planned with a tour group of around 60 coming from the Whakarewawera Club in Rotorua to play golden oldies games on Good Friday. PEGASUS POST Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Thursday April 1 2021 7 Band filled with rich history The New Brighton Museum has a rich history spanning more than 100 years. Peggy Butterfield writes monthly about the historical display at the heritage museum EVERY CHRISTMAS Parade we all enjoy our local band, but they are much more than a once-a-year performance. I live close to its hall in Rawhiti Domain, and on a Wednesday evening, I love being outside, hosing the garden and listening to the band practice. The band goes right back to 1890 with instruments secured from the Hibernian Band. Mr Free from the Bower Hotel was the first bandmaster, and dances were held at the hall at the hotel with 100 couples hitting the dance floor. Several names have been bestowed, with The New Brighton Marine Band an early name from 1908, with Captain Owles the conductor, in between being the mayor of the borough, starting the school drum and fife band, the athletic club and the miniature rifle club. LOVED: Captain Owles with the Mayoral Chain now housed at the New Brighton Museum. In fact his name appears on every club which we have the history for. There is a lovely story about how when Captain Owles was dying, in 1940, the band marched around to his house in Union St (still standing) and played for him. He came out onto the verandah and waved to his loyal members, and died soon after. The band was also known as the New Brighton Municipal Band and met in a small scout den. The band had to go outside in cold weather to allow the TOUCHING: The New Brighton Marine Band playing outside Captain Owles home in Union St, in 1940. Below: The band’s practice hall in Keyes Rd. clouds of smoke from the stove to blow away. The borough council then allowed the band to build a practice hall in Keyes Rd, which is also still standing. In 1976 it proudly opened its new clubrooms in Rawiti Domain. The band has enjoyed numerous first prizes in national and regional events and it has a talented and enthusiastic membership. We have a photo board at the museum dedicated to the band and past members. Library closing temporarily, service desk still running LINWOOD LIBRARY will close and the customer service desk will relocate for three weeks from this Sunday so that improvements can be made to the facility. “When Linwood Library and customer service centre reopens on April 27, visitors will be able to enjoy new furnishing, décor and a modified layout that will better suit their needs,” said city council head of libraries and information Carolyn Robertson. Customer services will continue to operate while the library is closed. The desk will relocate to a spot directly opposite the Linwood Library entrance inside Eastgate Mall. It will keep its usual hours from Monday to Friday, 9am- 5pm. “During the library’s temporary three-week closure, people can return borrowed items to any library in our network. Reserved items will be made available at the nearby Shirley Library, unless customers request otherwise,’’ Robertson said The closest libraries for Linwood residents are the Aranui Library, Shirley Library and Tūranga.
