JOSEPH "JOE" ALBERT THALHOFER<br />

1900 - 1979<br />

Joseph Albert Thalhoter was born March 19, 1900 in Oshkosh, W<strong>is</strong>consin to<br />

Albert John and Anna Klima Thaih<strong>of</strong>er. lie <strong>at</strong>tended grade and high schools<br />

in Oshkosh before receiving a degree in Business Admin<strong>is</strong>tr<strong>at</strong>ion from Marquette<br />

University, Milwaukee, W<strong>is</strong>consin.<br />

In September, 1922, Joe accompanied William Bray, a Lumberman from Oshkosh,<br />

to Klam<strong>at</strong>h Falls, <strong>Oregon</strong> where Bray bought a sawmill on <strong>the</strong> Sprague River.<br />

Joe was appointed company secretary and had charge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> comm<strong>is</strong>sary.<br />

On June 16, 1923, Joe married <strong>the</strong> former Ursula Kerwin, <strong>of</strong> Silver lake,<br />

W<strong>is</strong>conson, a teacher. L<strong>at</strong>er, Joe took a position as paymaster <strong>at</strong> Algoma<br />

Lumber Company and <strong>the</strong>n joined Pelican Bay Lumber Company, Kiam<strong>at</strong>h Falls,<br />

as ass<strong>is</strong>tant sales manager. He was also in charge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> retail lumber yard.<br />

Joe joined <strong>the</strong> U. S. Forest Service and was employed in <strong>the</strong> Ochoco N<strong>at</strong>ional<br />

Forest <strong>of</strong>fice in Prineville, <strong>Oregon</strong> from 1935 to 1960. First, he served as<br />

Admin<strong>is</strong>tr<strong>at</strong>ive Ass<strong>is</strong>tant and <strong>the</strong>n as. Admin<strong>is</strong>tr<strong>at</strong>ive Officer, lie was transferred<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Regional Office in Portland in June, 1960 and remained <strong>the</strong>re<br />

until h<strong>is</strong> retirement in 1964, <strong>at</strong> which time he and Ursula returned to t.heir<br />

home in Prineville.<br />

For <strong>the</strong> next three <strong>year</strong>s Joe wor'ked in <strong>the</strong> Federal Abundant Foods Program<br />

<strong>the</strong>n was appointed as trustee for <strong>the</strong> Referee in Bankruptcy for <strong>the</strong> Central<br />

<strong>Oregon</strong> region and served in th<strong>at</strong> capacity until h<strong>is</strong> de<strong>at</strong>h June 18, 1979.<br />

Joe was a par<strong>is</strong>hioner <strong>of</strong> St. Joseph's C<strong>at</strong>holic urth. He was a long-time<br />

member and past Grand Knight <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Knights <strong>of</strong> Columbus in both Kiam<strong>at</strong>h al1s<br />

and Prineville. He was also a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> American Legion, having served<br />

in <strong>the</strong> United St<strong>at</strong>es Army during World War I. He was amember <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Crook<br />

County R<strong>at</strong>ioning Board during World War II. He also served as budget <strong>of</strong>f icer<br />

for <strong>the</strong> Crook County Cemetery Improvement Committee.<br />

Joe and Ursula had four children:- three boys, Joseph John, Deschutes County<br />

D<strong>is</strong>trict Judge, Robert Lawson and Paul Albert, all born in Klam<strong>at</strong>h E'alls;<br />

and a daughter, Mary Pnn, born in Bend who <strong>is</strong> now Mrs. Hardy Myers.<br />

When Joe passed away, he was survived by h<strong>is</strong> wife and four children, fourteen<br />

grandchildren and three gre<strong>at</strong>-grandchildren. Also surviving were t.wo<br />

s<strong>is</strong>ters and a bro<strong>the</strong>r, all residing in W<strong>is</strong>consin - Mrs. Marie Redfern and<br />

Albert Thaih<strong>of</strong>er <strong>of</strong> Oshkosh and Mrs. Josephine B<strong>is</strong>hop <strong>of</strong> 2heboygan.<br />
