STREETWISE MAGAZINE

Welcome to

our April issue

So much of this month’s content

reflects the optimism that many of us

are now feeling, as we emerge from the

very dark months of lockdown and look

forward to a brighter future.

It’s more important than ever to support all

our local businesses, many of which were

forced to closed in lockdown and now look

forward to re-opening on 12th April.

PLEASE SUPPORT THEM!

After a cold and gloomy winter, spring is in

the air and there’s no better way to enjoy the

brighter days than with a walk, once again

Milnrow Library Walking Group provide us

with a great route from Milnrow Memorial

Park. The WI’s Tarte au Citron recipe is

delicious, and we love their suggestion of

washing it down with a glass of fizz!

If you are involved in a community

organisation in the area, look at page 52.

We are happy to promote any local cause,

just email over your information and we

will design and include it for free in our

community pages!

Until next month...

IS ALSO AVAILABLE IN...

We’re

back

It almost feels like we’re re-launching

a start up business after what feels

like almost a full 12 months of being

closed. Although we’ve been quite

pro-active on social media and

had some great support we still see

ourselves as very much a bricks and

mortar retailer built around our

community and hopefully we’ve built

up a stronger customer base during

the last 12 months.

JUNIORS

At Milnrow we look to give all our young players the best training and

away with a smile and wanting to come back to the next training session.

On Saturday mornings, the club host our ECB All-Stars programme for 5

to 8 year olds. We are also running the ECB Dynamos programme for the

first time that’s for 8 to 11 and is the perfect introduction into a new sport.

The Juniors play in different age groups in the Greater Manchester

games throughout the week during the season..

LADIES

We have had a fantastic response to the introduction of our Ladies

those who have shown an interest and those still looking for something

to do and have fun please get in touch.

LATEST PROPERTY UPDATE

PROPERTY UPDATE

“MANY OF US

ARE ITCHING

FOR A CHANGE

OF SCENERY

AFTER A YEAR OF

#STAYHOME.”

Whilst adding the ‘stress’ of a house move on top of

the difficulties of the pandemic may put some off,

we give an insight into why now could be the perfect

time to get into the market...

IT’S A SELLERS’ MARKET

The latest Rightmove house price index said that this

was the best sellers’ market in a decade as 66% of

properties on estate agents books have had their

sales agreed.

Plus, the number of inquiries from potential buyers is

34% higher than a year ago. As a result, the average

asking price rose by 2.7% in the year.

Spring is traditionally the busiest time for the property

market and this year is expected to be even busier.

MORTGAGE BOOST

The government has announced a new 5% deposit

home loan guarantee scheme, which will be available

to current homeowners as well as first time buyers

looking to purchase a house for up to £600,000.

This initiative will be available to lenders from April

and is designed to increase the appetite of mortgage

lenders to offer high loan-to-value lending to

creditworthy customers across the UK.

Under the scheme, the government will offer to take

on some of the risk of low deposit loans, meaning

lenders would have SOME protection from potential

losses.

STAMP DUTY

HOLIDAY

EXTENDED

The temporary stamp duty holiday in England and

Northern Ireland has been extended until the end of June.

This means that if you are buying a home up to the value

of £500,000 you will not pay any stamp duty.

Also, up until the end of September, there will be no

stamp duty on property purchases up to £250,000.

Rightmove estimate that there are currently over

600,000 sales going through, and this massive number,

coupled with the challenges of conveyancers and council

back-log, has led to delays in the home-buying process.

ll things considered, if you are thining of moving

home, now is the time to act

Milnrow & Newhey

Foodbank Moves Location

St James’ Church - the new

location for community project

in high demand

The food donation and distribution scheme

– formerly called Project Together – has

successfully found new premises. St James’

Parish Church in Milnrow will play host to the

local foodbank as Butterworth Hall will be

returning to pre-pandemic activities after

lockdown ends.

“Auntie Irene’s Pantry” was founded at

the start of the year by local resident Tom

Bishop and Councillor Irene Davidson and

has since attracted several local volunteers.

It simply aims to ensure that nobody goes

without essentials during lockdown and Tom

points out, “We believe its name makes the

pantry more comforting to approach, and

demand is increasing week on week. We

have a fabulous team of volunteers and we

are incredibly grateful to the Tim Bobbin Pub

who have allowed us to put our new banner

on their outer wall.”

Councillor Davidson added: “You don’t

need to book, just turn up if you’re in need.

Everyone is welcome. If you need to, feel

free to come back the following week. If you

are in a position where you must choose

between paying the bills and eating, it’s

more important that you come to us for

food and ensure that you can then pay

your bills and keep a roof over your head.

However, it’s not just about food, we can

help with finance and other useful contacts.

We will ask no questions other than ‘is there

any other way we can help you?’”

Tom added “Anyone in need can message

the page privately to arrange a delivery if

required, or you can contact Irene directly

too: If you want to talk to us, you can turn up

and we can chat to you in a private room to

see if we can take out help further. We can

deliver to your doorstep, ring the bell, and

leave the food without even seeing you, if

that’s what you prefer.”

APPEAL

The pantry has a good stock of both

tinned and dry goods, but requires

pasta sauces, tinned meat, and tinned

potatoes, easter eggs, all personal items

including sanitary products and cereals

such as porridge. Cash donations

are also welcome so that volunteers

can purchase special items such as

baby food, food for those with dietary

requirements, prepaid cards for heating

or electricity and fresh bread on the day.

“Auntie Irene’s Pantry” is currently

operating from Butterworth Hall every

Wednesday (6pm to 7pm) and every

Sunday (11.30am to 2pm). From Sunday

11th April it will be based at St James

Church operating at the same times.

Milnrow Library Walking Group

A WALK FROM MILNROW MEMORIAL PARK

Walking over the last couple of months has

certainly been for the benefit of our health,

both physical and mental. We have all been

encouraged to get out and about within our

local areas and going off the numbers of

people I have met during my daily exercising,

many more people are getting out walking

which is great to see. We look forward to

being able to meet again soon for our

regular Monday walks.

THE ROUTE

The walk for this issue is quite a lengthy one (around

8.5miles) covering a variety of terrain and local

interest spots.

Leaving Milnrow Memorial Park by exiting to the

right onto Newhey Rd and passing under the

Motorway bridge bear slightly right onto Royd Street.

At the end of this street cross New Street and take

the footpath between Butterworth Hall and Milnrow

Evangelical Church, (Image 1) coming out of the

passageway onto Charles Lane. Turn to your left

and cross the road before entering Wellington Street

on your right.

Keep on along Croft Head Drive until you reach

Wildhouse Lane. Turn left and continue along

Wildhouse Lane to Branch Road (Image 2).

Turning left walk down Branch Road to its junction

with Clegg Hall Road. Go to your left and follow this

road past Clegg Hall until you cross the canal, then

take the footpath on your right to arrive on the canal

towpath (Image 3).

2

3

Walk along Wellington St. and continue on to St

James Street keeping on this street until you reach

Kiln Lane. At this point carefully watching the traffic

cross Kiln Lane and enter Silver Hill. Continue along

Silver Hill and turn left into Croft Head Drive.

1

Continue along the towpath, passing under several

bridges and continue past Littleborough Station,

until you reach the Lock 48 at Ealees. Cross the

canal at this lock (Image 4) and follow the footpath

passing a row of terraced houses on your left.

46

To advertise call 07976 289967 or 07974 434793 or email sales@streetwisemag.co.uk

At the end of the houses cross the junction and

go straight ahead along Ealees Road (Image 5),

which winds its way along the side of Ealees Brook,

passing Pastures New Petting Farm before turning

right and crossing the brook on a wooden bridge.

Continue along this footpath keeping to the right

and passing through the car park and Visitor’s centre

to arrive on the bank of Hollingworth Lake.

4

Go through the stile and keeping right follow the

track uphill through Annis Hill Farm and out onto

Bell Lane. Turn right and follow this road down to

Pennine Drive. Turn right onto Pennine and continue

downhill to its junction with Cornfield Street with

Hollingworth High School on your left. Cross the

road and walk across the spare ground then take

the footpath onto Cornfield Street. Turn left to walk

for a short distance and then right onto New Street

passing the Wagon Inn before turning left into Royd

Street continuing along here to join Newhey Road

and back under the motorway bridge into the Park

where your walk finishes. Hope you have enjoyed it.

7

Gweneth Smith

Walk Leader

Turn left onto Rakewood Road and continue along

here with the Lake on your right. At the end of the

Lake turn right and follow the footpath round the Lake

until you reach the Water Activity Base (Image 6).

Immediately after passing the base you will find a

gate and stile on your left (Image 7).

Covid 19 Update

The Government Roadmap out of Lockdown,

step 1, from 29th March, outdoor gatherings

and the Rule of 6, will be allowed. As such

our walks will resume after Easter, starting

Monday 12th April.

We meet outdoors at Milnrow Memorial Park

from 9.30am leaving out at 10 am split into

groups of no more than 6 people including

a walk leader.

Social distancing will still apply and walkers

must give their names and contact numbers

for tract and trace purposes as well as

provide their own PPE (masks,sanitizers,

gels). If you are suffering social isolation

or simply want to get out for exercise, then

come along and join us.

THE FIRST ROCHDALE BOYS GRAMMAR SCHOOL

In the mid 1500’s the town of

Rochdale had a population of

10,000 most of whom had no

education and would count

themselves lucky to receive an

apprenticeship.

The few who could afford to have

their sons well educated (and it was

mainly sons), sent them to Whalley

Abbey whilst poorer families were

reliant on their children’s labour and

therefore saw no use in schooling. The

reformation in the 16th century saw

a move away from schools connected

to the church to the establishment of

grammar schools in towns. Even so,

when such a school was proposed

in Rochdale in 1561 it came through

the auspices of the Anglican church,

Matthew Parker, the Archbishop of

Canterbury, sending a letter to the

inhabitants of Rochdale proposing the

endowment of just such a school.

Although the town was keen to see

a school built, the church at the time

had little finance to make it happen.

However, there was a proposal that

funds be raised and this was

forthcoming partly through the

guarantor help of Sir John Byron

(Steward of Manchester and Rochdale)

and Mr Midgely, a local vicar who not

offered the site for the school opposite

the churchyard. The foundation deed

was completed by three parties,

Archbishop Parker, Dr Porie (Master

of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge)

and Richard Midgely with the intention

of ‘providing true piety and the study of

the Latin tongue.’

Building was completed in 1565, the

structure being, according to Reverend

F R Raines in 1843, a ‘humble structure

of one storey’. Built sixty feet by twenty

in rough stone and covered by heavy

flag slates it was situated by the Parish

Church at the junction of Church Lane,

still called ‘School Lane.’ At the South

end of the interior was an oak desk for

the Master whilst the rest of the room

comprised of benches and desks for the

students. Adjoining the schoolhouse

was a raised, one-room building which

acted as the Master’s House.

It was intended that the first Grammar

School should house between 50-150

boys although the first intake was only

30. Lessons in Latin and the study

of Christianity were the mainstay

along with Greek, writing, arithmetic,

history and geography. John Cole,

writing in 1990 suggested that ‘the

number of pupils attending the

school was extremely small and the

only gave up part of his stipend but institution made little impact on general

48

educational standards in the town.’

Although it was supposed to be free,

should pupils want further subjects

such as literature they had to pay a

guinea and a half per quarter for the

tuition. Furthermore, in order to be a

member of the school, those who ‘are

capable of benefitting’ had to pay a

guinea entrance. Boarders were not

taken. It was a requirement that the

school be kept in good condition by the

parishioners.

The Master’s stipend or salary was

£15 per year, an under-Master or

Usher receiving £2 per year. Financial

contributions for this came from

Charles Chadwick of Healey Hall

and £13 10s from the Township

of Butterworth. The first Master

of Rochdale Grammar School was

Reverend Robert Ratcliffe followed by

Reverend Walkden in 1589 after which

there was a succession of ministers of

the church with the exception of Mr

Richard Holte in 1605 although he too

reputedly owned a large collection of

theological books.

By the mid-19th century pupil numbers

were small at the school, only 15

in 1862 and 31 in 1867 studying a

curriculum consisting of English,

Arithmetic, History and Geography,

Geometry and Algebra, Linear

drawing and copying from nature

and Languages (Latin, Greek, French

and German). The full charge for this

education was 6 guineas per annum. A

second Master was employed in later

years and the school – serving boys

aged 8-14 – was divided into junior

and secondary schools, a few boarders

being accepted. It seems that poor

numbers from the grammar school

entering Oxford or Cambridge was,

according to Winter, ‘not remarkable,’

many students leaving the school to

go to other universities in order to

engage in commercial and professional

employment. Behaviour in classes

was thought to be good with only a

‘small amount of punishment needed.’

Headmasters in the 19th century

still came from the clergy, Reverend

Sheffield for example being appointed

by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

By 1845 the original building was in

a state of dilapidation and funds were

found quite quickly to build a new

Grammar School, partly by public funds

raised through a bazaar. The new school

was built on the site of the present

Broadfield Hotel (once the nurse’s home)

on Sparrow Hill in 1846, the original

school being demolished in 1847.

I’d be delighted to hear from you and add them to a growing Rochdale

A Community

Emerging from Lockdown

Thanks to vaccine development

and other innovations we can all

be hopeful that the restrictions

associated with this awful

pandemic can be lifted soon.

This phenomenon can often be alleviated

by a little pre-planning - why not leave the

car at home and walk to your intended

destination? This way you derive a double

benefit, more exercise and fewer cars

obstructing narrow roads.

The same is also true for local schools;

with children returning to normal learning

patterns, we have an ideal opportunity to

re-examine how we arrive at schools as well

as to what extent we congregate outside

them. Is a car journey to school the best way

to arrive?

At least two major challenges remain as we

move towards a hopefully brighter future.

What contribution can local people make, to

ensuring a smooth transition from lockdown

to a more “normal life” and how will residents

continue to support our community as it

emerges into a new reality?

In relation to a smooth transition to a

“normal” life we can all do our bit by listening

carefully to, and following the advice given

by central and local government. People

are already aware that the emergence will

take place in five-week steps - designed to

prevent a sudden upsurge in cases and the

advice will be modified during each of those

phases. We can all do our bit by sticking

to the modified advice, as and when it is

introduced.

Supporting our Village community will,

I hope, be an important feature of our

recovery from lockdown. Many local

businesses have found the last twelve

months extremely challenging, despite

the unprecedented level of support from

central and local government alike. If those

businesses are to survive and continue to

make a vital contribution to the sustainability

of our area, they need your support. Please

consider carefully whether your hardearned

money is best spent with local

businesses to support our local economy.

Local voluntary groups and charities will

need active support and participation from

local people, in order to emerge swiftly from

lockdown. Has your membership lapsed? Do

you need to reconnect with organisations

which you used to support?

Lockdown, and our emergence from it,

creates unique challenges for an area such

as ours with a beautiful natural environment.

In recent weeks access points to many of

our beauty spots have been choked by

Let`s hope that together we can

move swiftly and smoothly out of

Are you involved with

your local community?

Over the years we have supported many local community groups and causes in our

four magazines. In the Milnrow and Newhey magazine, these have included the many

walks organised by the Milnrow Library Walking Group who have benefited greatly

from the free publicity, attracting many new members to their group:

Since our Group’s formation in 2016, our profile has been greatly enhanced by the

publication of our walking articles in the Milnrow & Newhey Streetwise Magazine.

Many new members joined our Group having first read

about our activities in Streetwise. During the Covid-19

Pandemic, Streetwise gave us the means to keep everyone

informed of our activities based from Milnrow Memorial Park.

Thank you, Kate and Becky, for providing us with a valuable

community platform to extol the virtues of health, wellbeing,

and friendship, through the joy of walking. Keep up the

good work!

Geoff Ogden and Gweneth Smith

More recently, we have also worked with the Newhey & Milnrow ‘Protect our

Greenbelt Group’ by promoting their campaign against proposed building in the area:

By including our campaign updates in Streetwise each month, interest in

our group escalated rapidly and members on our Facebook and Twitter

accounts increased! Through the free publicity we received from Streetwise,

we were able to advertise our conferences, meetings, and community

marches against the building on Greenbelt.

Our fight so far has been successful with the removal of the Kingsway South

(Newhey & Milnrow) site from the GMSF and our cause has been greatly

helped by keeping the community involved through the magazine.

A BIG thank You to Kate & Becky for your continued help and support.

Save Our Villages ( Newhey & Milnrow) Protect our Greenbelt Group

If you are involved with your local community and would like to feature in the

magazine, please get in touch. It will reach 4,000 homes around Milnrow

and Newhey, and it won’t cost you a penny.

We look forward to hearing from you!
