Hopleaf Bar celebrates its 29th anniversary in 2021, and after 28 years

of growing, prospering, engaging with the community and supporting its

needs, they are emerging from a difficult pandemic year with renewed

ambition. While 2020 saw Hopleaf with mandated limitations or long

periods of closure, they are determined to celebrate reopening with

newfound spirit and many lessons learned. Owners Michael Roper and

Louise Molnar reflect, “Andersonville has embraced Hopleaf for nearly

three decades and never more than over the past few months.” They

and the Hopleaf staff can’t wait to be Andersonville’s favorite convivial

drinking, dining and meeting spot once again.

“The Andersonville culture makes it easy

for me to be friendly, kind, and caring

when I help our residents finance their

new homes and save money,” says

Shimmy Braun, an Andersonville resident

and mortgage lender with 20 years of

experience on his side. Guaranteed

Rate has continued to simplify the loan

process for its customers, including

closing paperwork which can be done

digitally, even in your pajamas in front

of the fireplace! Shimmy is inspired

daily in his work and life by his son

Ryan, “a brave and proud transgender

man who teaches me to fight the fight,

Välkommen

[ welcome ]

Welcome to Andersonville. A neighborhood on Chicago’s

north side, Andersonville is known for its Swedish roots,

historic architecture, and bustling business district

anchored by North Clark Street. When you arrive in

Andersonville, you feel you have arrived someplace

special. We are also recognized as the “shop local capital

of Chicago,” supporting the largest network of local and

independent businesses in the area including one-ofa-kind

retailers, popular cafés and restaurants, a home

& vintage district, theatres and more. Home to one of

Chicago’s largest LGBTQIA+ populations, Andersonville is

a community full of pride and a commitment to equality.

Andersonville is for everyone.

We are also a neighborhood of stories. With over 400

businesses in the Andersonville Chamber of Commerce

membership, we hope you discover a few of these

stories throughout the pages of this guide and by visiting

Andersonville and meeting our business owners face-toface.

Each is unique, and each has a reason for loving this

special neighborhood.

Andersonville is resilient. COVID-19 has absolutely

devastated the small business community world-wide, but

Andersonville continues to adapt and change to keep up

with safety guidelines. Our businesses could not survive

without the devoted support of the locals that live here and

those that continue to contribute to our local economy,

whether online or in person. We are Small Business Made,

and will continue to uplift those brave and fortunate enough

to weather this particularly rocky point in our history.

Whether you are local, are exploring a new Chicago

neighborhood, or are visiting from elsewhere nationally or

internationally; Välkommen.

We invite you to explore Andersonville.

Utsända Andersonville

[ the podcast ]

Launched by the Andersonville Chamber of Commerce in

March 2018, Always Andersonville: The Podcast has served

as a vehicle to tell more than 100 stories of local business

owners and community members in a weekly episode airing

on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Podbean. Engineered

by Andy Miles and recorded by Chamber staff currently

on Zoom, the podcast reveals the personal triumphs,

struggles and real life lessons of the local entrepreneurs,

shopkeepers, chefs, designers, and spirited personalities

who enrichen the Andersonville community.

Andersonville’s Swedish roots date back to the late 1800’s, and the

Swedish American Museum has been a cornerstone to the community

for the last 45 years. A never ceasing beacon of heritage exploration

that honors the immigrant experience, the Museum is a hub of virtual

cooking classes, a knitting group, a book club and more led by an

incredibly dedicated staff. Throughout the pandemic, the team has also

been busily perfecting their Swedish Kanelbullar (cinnamon rolls), as

well as other baked goods available for weekly pre-order and pick-up.

The 2021-22 season promises expansion for the Museum with a new

outdoor space and dedicated Swedish cafe.

The week of March 15, 2021 marked the oneyear

anniversary of COVID shutdown for the

businesses of Andersonville. The year was

touch and go for so many, but our businesses

all have one thing in common; their unyielding

passion and gratitude for the community that

has stepped up and showed up to keep these

businesses alive. Andersonville Endures.

5 WAYS TO LOVE

A LOCAL BUSINESS

SHOP THE SITE

Andersonville businesses are accessible through their fantastic websites and sell their

products online. They work hard on maintaining these sites year round. Now is a great

time to discover what’s available from the comfort of your couch.

ORDER DIRECT

Many of Andersonville’s local restaurants and cafes are able to deliver food straight to

your home, or will allow you to order food for pick-up curbside with the ease of an app

or a quick phone call. Make sure to check in with the restaurant on their delivery service

of choice, and visit andersonville.org/updates for who’s providing which services.

LOVE. LIKE. SHARE.

What do you love about Andersonville? Now is the time to show these businesses some

love in your social media feeds. Tag the business, tag us, and tag a friend who should

check it out in the future. Also, don’t just follow your favorite businesses on social; like

their posts and leave a comment too. All of this will help to boost a businesses’ visibility.

USE YOUR VOICE

Now is a great time to catch up on reviewing your favorite shop, eatery, healthcare

provider, or service business. Your positive reviews on Google, Yelp and Facebook will

start building positive momentum for the months to come.

ANDERSONVILLE IS ACTIVE. ADAPTING. ALWAYS.

As the news changes each day, our businesses are making the difficult choices on how

to adapt and continue operating in new capacities. We cannot stress enough;

Andersonville is still open and active in many online and digital ways, and purchasing a

gift card directly from your favorite businesses, or following any of our other tips, directly

supports them during this difficult time.

In May 2020, the Andersonville Chamber of Commerce launched the Always

Andersonville: Small Business Made campaign, once again reiterating

messages of support for the local business community and highlighting stories

of resilience in our own backyard. The Andersonville Chamber made safety a

priority for visitors brave enough to come out when businesses were finally

allowed to reopen, including chalking the entire Special Service Area (SSA #22)

with #6FTSAFE social distancing sidewalk markers for use when queuing for

curbside pickup. The campaign continued throughout the remainder of 2020.

16

During the 2020 Holidays,

businesses were forced to get

creative to service customers.

Simon’s Tavern owner Scott

Martin (left) bottled his famous

hot Swedish Glögg to sell to a

daily line of thirsty supporters.

Enter the tentative, but hopeful promise

of 2021. The vaccine is here and slowly,

Chicagoans are starting to see light at the

end of this tunnel. But, we aren’t out of the

woods yet. If you’ve picked up this Guide at

a local retailer, restaurant, health & wellness

office or service provider, we thank you for

your continued patronage. If you received your

copy in the mail, we ask that you continue to

support our Andersonville businesses online

and with curbside pickup. We know the future

is uncertain, but with your commitment to this

neighborhood, there is hope.

Rättvisa Andersonville

[ diversity, equity + inclusion ]

In 2020, we were emboldened to

take a hard look at our privilege: our

privilege as white individuals, our

privilege as a north side organization,

and our privilege as a predominately

white business district. Despite

Andersonville being known as a

LGBTQIA+ safe haven, and despite

our efforts at inclusivity, we fall short

in meeting the needs of the black and

brown communities here in Chicago.

18

The Andersonville Chamber of Commerce is committed to becoming an

antiracist organization by engaging our BIPOC members and partners. We will

use our collective voice and influence to drive racial equity impact and change

and to advocate for those whose voices have historically been discounted or

silenced. We pledge to actively work against the internalized racist

worldview by:

Using data and best practices to create systems that add a lasting antiracist

lens to Andersonville Chamber operations, recruitment, retention, culture, and

Board leadership in order to achieve greater diversity and representation in all

of these aspects of our work.

Working to understand the unique needs of BIPOC-owned businesses,

patrons, and residents so that we can be an effective partner and advocate for

policies that support a more equitable and inclusive business district.

Educating our membership by providing impactful tools on anti-racism in the

workplace and encouraging them to join us in raising our collective voices and

taking action to support racial equity.

The Andersonville Chamber of Commerce values diversity, equity, and inclusion

in the Andersonville Business District. We live in an unjust society, one with

a long history of cultural and systemic discrimination. All are welcomed,

respected, and supported here, regardless of race, ethnicity, nationality,

religion, socioeconomic status, education, marital status, language, age,

gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, mental or physical ability,

and learning style.

In partnership with Alderman Andre Vasquez,

40th Ward Chicago, the Andersonville

Chamber of Commerce hosted more than 20

BIPOC and Trans/GNC artists the weekend

of August 8 & 9, 2020 to paint the message,

“BLACK TRANS LIVES MATTER” as a street

mural at 1500 West Catalpa Avenue between

Clark and Ashland. The mural was dedicated

on August 22, 2020.

Known in the early ‘90s as a safe

haven for Chicago’s gay and lesbian

community, Andersonville has now

blossomed into one of the queerest

areas of the city. In addition to our

residents, we have a substantial density

In 2018, the Andersonville Chamber of Commerce formed the Trans/Gender

Nonconforming-Affirming Business Task Force in an effort to empower and

educate Andersonville’s business community to be Trans/GNC-affirming in

business practices, physical spaces, and customer service. The task force has

since become part of the Diversity Equity Inclusion Committee in 2021.

Andersonville has been home to lesbian-founded and co-owned Women &

Children First bookstore since 1990. The feminist indie bookstore celebrated

40 years in 2019!

A Queer Pride hosted the first Chicago is a Drag Festival in Andersonville

in 2019, the first drag festival of its kind in Chicago and marking the 50th

anniversary of the Stonewall Riots.

Backlot Bash (anticipated to return in 2022), is one of the most highly attended

weekend events for lesbians in the country which takes place behind Cheetah

Gym.

A proudly owned LGBTQ business, Rattleback Records is the culmination of a

lifelong love of music and vintage treasures by owners Paul Ruffino (right) and

husband Mike Weaver. Open since 2018, Rattleback expanded to an additional

storefront in 2020 despite the ongoing pandemic, proving that small businesses are

the foundation of Andersonville. Be sure to stop in to chat with the friendly staff

Q + A with Khloe Couleé

[ by Abhijeet Rane, co-founder of A Queer Pride and Chicago is a Drag Festival ]

Abhijeet: What was the first moment

you thought about being a Drag Queen?

Khloe: I’ve always been a very creative

person who’s obsessed with makeup,

performing and making videos. When

I was still in High School in Indiana,

my mom told me about RuPaul’s Drag

Race and we sat down together to

watch season one of the show together.

Watching those artists werk their way on

stage definitely inspired me to start in my

bedroom at first, and then in the Chicago

nightlife scene.

How has your style/look developed over

the years?

I started with a very “girl next door”

aesthetic and experimented with how I

would dress if I was a girl, making do

with stores around me. Over the years

I’ve transformed to a much cooler and

fashion-forward aesthetic - and you can

always catch me in the club with custom

fashion, sparkly jewelry and new hair!

Describe your “getting ready” process.

I can never get ready without having a

Netflix show on or some music playing

nearby. I always start with a concept

and map everything out in my head, then

take things slow and steady, one step at

a time. There’s never a reason to rush,

they can’t start the party with ME!

What’s your favorite makeup product

you can’t live without?

I think neutrals are a must have for

everyone who wears makeup, and my

favorite is Urban Decay’s Naked Heat

eyeshadow palette.

What are your performances like?

A Khloe Couleé performance is always

high energy and upbeat. My strength is

bringing elements of interactivity and

all the drag stunts to every number

no matter the genre - catch me going

from doing a handstand during a k-pop

number to a jump-split in hip-hop. Plus I

can bring you a funny and goofy moment

when needed.

Which other performers do you admire?

Chicago has some of the best drag in the

24

world and I’m really lucky to be here in a

time when it’s so active and accessible.

I really look up to legends like my drag

mother Shea Couleé, The Vixen, and

Lucy Stoole, along with my drag family

Bambi Banks-Couleé, Kenzie Couleé,

Abhijeet, and JForPay.

What was it like being part of the first

Chicago Is A Drag Festival?

I’ve worked with A Queer Pride on

a bunch of events before and was

extremely excited to be asked to host

such a major inaugural event despite

being new to the scene. It was a

whirlwind of new experiences but

amazing to emcee for one of my biggest

crowds to date. Looking back at it now, I

still can’t believe I was the opening host

at the largest drag event in Chicago,

and one that was celebrating 50 years of

Chicago Pride and the 50th anniversary

of the Stonewall Riots. A Queer Pride is

always at the front of bringing you the

coolest events and special guests in

Chicago.

What can people expect from

the experience?

With anything A Queer Pride produces,

expect the unexpected - but always

expect a good and memorable time.

Why is Drag important to the

Andersonville neighborhood?

Drag in Andersonville shows that the

art does and needs to exist outside

of just North Halsted. Drag can be

as interesting and creative outside of

nightclubs and exist alongside a family

neighborhood. Who doesn’t want to see

a queen cartwheel outside on a Sunday

morning? Chicago Is A Drag Festival

also showcased how many residents of

the neighborhood are fans of drag and

are interested in supporting local artists

and national headliners. There’s so much

potential to keep growing.

Tell us about your experiences with

Drag in Andersonville.

Sunday Social with Chamilla Foxx at

Meeting House Tavern is one of my

favorite shows in the neighborhood. It

brings together such a diverse crowd

of performers and audiences to enjoy

an amazing evening of drag and drinks

together. I’ve also had the opportunity

to work with Replay Andersonville,

Hamburger Mary’s when it was still open,

Octavio’s (now The Bird Cage) and The

Call, and the staff and crowd are always

super welcoming and supportive.

Drag fans can stop by RAYGUN to get

merch from some of your favorite local

drag performers. Plus, people interested

in starting drag can go outfit shopping

right in the neighborhood at AKIRA for

the perfect ensemble.

There seems to be more drag queens

than drag kings? Why do you think

that is?

I think there has always been a

mainstream visibility of drag as a “male

to female” transformation but it is so

much more than that and beyond gender

or sexuality. We should continue to

create spaces for drag kings and other

AFAB performers within our shows and

venues. Some amazing drag kings to

check out in Chicago are Tenderoni,

Travis Fiero and Mick Douch, and outside

of the city Dragula’s Landon Cider

and Spikey Van Dykey who headlined

Chicago Is A Drag Festival (in the heart

of Andersonville) in 2019.

Tell us about Drag in the COVID-19 era.

With venues closing down, everyone

is back to their roots of doing drag in

their bedrooms. It has definitely become

more focused on appealing to audiences

from a distance, with an emphasis in the

visual aspect. I’ve learned to spend more

time experimenting with creative ideas,

transforming my high energy to high

concept.

Early to Bed has called Andersonville home since

2014, but has been promoting a sex-positive mentality

for nearly 20 years! Owner Searah Deysach wants

customers to feel safe while purchasing, with 24 hour

online shopping, access to quick, discreet shipping,

easy in-store pick-up and limited in-store shopping

hours. “By supporting local shops now, you are helping

to keep us in this neighborhood that you love, and you

are helping to keep Andersonville healthy and vibrant.”

“Small businesses are the lifeblood of our

community. Since the pandemic began, we’ve all

discovered how important shopping local truly is;

without our neighborhood businesses, we lose

our sense of community,” reflects Milk Handmade

owner Hallie Borden. Open since 2012, the clothing,

self-care products, jewelry and accessories sold at

Milk are locally-designed and made. Milk even has

a signature clothing line, designed by Hallie herself,

who was named best local designer in Chicago

Reader’s Best of Chicago 2020.

Love, hope and resilience are three words that inspire

Rebecca Pope, owner of Something Profound Weddings.

She’s been providing couples in love, many of them

from Andersonville, with wedding planning services

since 2018. As an ordained minister, she guides the

marriage license process and can even help with wedding

speeches and vows. “If you’ve found your person and are

ready to make it official, I can help with everything from

proposal to planning, to officiating.”

Dispensary 33

5001 North Clark

dispensary33.com

A little bit of cannabis science and a whole lot of cannabis culture;

that’s the ethos that Dispensary 33 works to uphold daily at the

Andersonville location, open since 2015 as Chicago’s first and best

medical and recreational cannabis dispensary. The knowledgeable and

artistic budtenders and staff provide their clients recommendations to

manage stress, all within a safe, quick and touch-free environment.

Customers pre order in advance, but can make changes once instore.

“Chicago’s cannabis culture and community constantly amazes

us. It’s expansive, and people are consuming cannabis for so many

different reasons. This culture gives us life.”

50

Cannabis Culture in

Andersonville with

Paul Lee

[ General Manager of Dispensary 33 ]

What is unique about Andersonville?

Andersonville still has that old school Chicago charm.

A lot has changed, but because Andersonville is home

to a lot of small businesses, it helps retain that feeling.

Cannabis drives more people to the area, and it feels

good to support and grow with the neighborhood.

Has hiring from the community influenced D33?

Yes! Hiring directly from the community is a strong

way to be connected to the roots of the neighborhood,

but we receive resumes and hire from different parts of the city. I like to bring together

people who share a passion for cannabis and community. The result is a group of diverse,

cannabis-minded folks at our shop who are so true to themselves. I believe it helps

influence the area in a positive way.

What does Chicago and cannabis mean to you?

Cannabis in Chicago is necessary. People in Chicago have been using cannabis for

decades - for relief, fun, or alternatives to harsh medication. People are always surprised

by the amount of people who consume cannabis in Chicago, but it’s a necessary part of

our lives. The mission of our dispensary is to help people who need access to cannabis

and to provide space in the community for it.

What is the biggest misconception about working at a dispensary?

That it’s not a lot of work.

It’s rewarding because our whole staff is passionate about what we do, but we have our

fair share of stress and long hours. People don’t see the grunt work that goes into it.

There’s a different emotional aspect in a dispensary than other retail environment and

there needs to be a certain tolerance, knowledge and understanding to serve a wide

array of people.

What are you proud of?

I’m really proud of the way our team adapts. Adapting to an ever changing market IS

cannabis. We have a tiny crew without backup, and we’re forced to adapt quickly, so we

do. No other dispensary handles crowds like we do.

I also think our team performs very well operationally. People feel heard and seen

and cared for from the minute they walk in, and they tell us that. The transition to the

recreational market, although hard, has been really rewarding. I’m lucky to have the team

that I do.

This interview was contributed to the 2021-2022 Andersonville Neighborhood Guide

by the Dispensary 33 staff. Visit dispensary33.com for more information.

Urban Pooch owners Ed Kaczmarek (top left), Dan Gaughan

(top right) and pooch son Aiden have worked hard to

accommodate their customers during this pandemic. Their

new website, SHOP.UrbanPooch.com, has provided delivery

and curbside pickup options and expanded retail variety.

Urban Pooch is also offering new Enrichment Daycare, a

tailored program that nurtures your pooch’s physical, mental

and emotional well-being, and Behavioral Consultations to

help pooch parents whose needs can be more complex. “We

LOVE our client pooches just like they’re our own family

members! Our staff offers expanded services and expert

advice and are here when you need us.”

Jay Juarez, owner of IloIlo Custom Framing, is

known for his great eye for color and has been

serving the Andersonville neighborhood since 1991.

The shop, named after his childhood hometown in

the Philippines, began as an art supply store on

Clark Street that offered custom framing as one of its

services. In 1998, Jay relocated to the shop’s current

location at 1478 West Berwyn and limited the store’s

services exclusively to custom framing. According to

his customers, Jay is truly one of a kind.

[ farmers market ]

70

The Andersonville Farmers Market has supported local and regional

farmers and food producers since its inception in 2009. After

celebrating a fantastic 10th anniversary season in 2019, the Farmers

Market re-conceptualized in 2020 due to the pandemic. This included

a move from its longtime location on Berwyn Avenue to the wider,

more socially-distanced footprint north on Catalpa Avenue. Now in a

hybrid format, shoppers are encouraged to either book orders ahead

of time using the WhatsGood market app for easy pickup, or visit in

person on Wednesdays during market season for carefully controlled

entry. The market runs each year from May - October and offers the

best in fresh produce, free range meat, tofu, baked goods, fresh florals

and more, as well as serving as an incubator for up-and-coming local

entrepreneurs and farmers. Learn more at andersonvillemarket.org.

Friends of Andersonville is a summer reading

program and non-profit that connects neighborhood

kids and their families to great local businesses.

Started by volunteers in 2013 after the closing of

Trumbull School, the program serves over 170 kids

and rewards their reading milestones with local gift

cards. In 2019, the program was able to distribute

$12,000 back into the local economy! Find the

Friends popping up in Andersonville on Wednesday

Svea Restaurant

5236 North Clark

Facebook @SVEAChicago

Two of Andersonville’s last remaining Swedish

establishments, Simon’s (est. 1934) and Svea (est.

1924) were amongst the hardest hit during the

pandemic. Owner Scott Martin reflects that the empty

bar and restaurant felt “so quiet and lonely” without

their usual patrons, but the forced break allowed

for much needed updates to both locations: new

floors for Simon’s and a new stove for Svea. He is so

grateful for the unyielding support of the Andersonville

neighborhood, from those that lined up during the

holidays for Simon’s bottled Swedish Glögg or gathered

safely on the back patio, to those that now frequent

Svea once again for traditional Swedish pancakes and

more. Both locations are quintessential Andersonville,

and Scott can’t wait to see them bustling once again.
