Kootenay residents

‘Walk Your Own

Way’

in support of people

affected by dementia

To mark Brain Awareness Week, a

global campaign is encouraging Kootenay

residents to consider their brain

health.

While the causes of and cure for

dementia are still being researched,

we know there are things we can do

to reduce our risk of developing the

disease. This includes being physically

active. People who exercise regularly

are less likely to develop heart disease,

stroke and diabetes all risks associated

with dementia.

In support of Brain Awareness Week,

which runs through March 21, the Alzheimer

Society of BC is encouraging

residents to register in the IG Wealth

Management Walk for Alzheimer’s. The

online fundraiser takes place throughout

May.

The 2021 event will be a “Walk your

own way” initiative, meaning that anyone

anywhere in the province can take

part. “This past year has been full of

unprecedented challenges, particularly

for people living with dementia

and their care partners,” says Barbara

Lindsay, interim CEO of the Alzheimer

Society of BC, “Fundraisers like the

Walk help enable the Society to continue

providing support and resources,

which are needed more than ever.”

Getting involved is easy. Throughout

May area residents can set themselves

a challenge like walking, running or

dancing while fundraising to support

people living with the disease and their

care partners. Participants are encouraged

to get creative and do what works

for them and ensure their plans to

participate adhere to current provincial

health guidelines.

An online celebration on Sunday,

May 30 will end the month of activity.

“As well as raising funds, participants

also help raise critical awareness of the

impact of dementia in their community.

While the 2021 event is different

than in past years, it continues to be a

way to celebrate and remember people

in our lives who have been affected by

dementia,” says Lindsay.

In past, the Walk typically took place

in-person in more than 20 communities

across the province.

Funds raised during the event help

fund the Alzheimer Society of BC’s

online programs, education and services

for people in communities across

the province. People who support the

IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s

today will double their impact,

as a generous supporter has committed

$35,000 to match all donations made

between March 22 and April 11.

Visit walkforalzheimers.ca to donate,

register and set up a personal fundraising

page to start planning how you are

going to walk your own way.

SUDOKU

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid,

broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a

sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each

row, column and box. Each number can appear

only once in each row, column and box. You

can fi gure out the order in which the numbers

will appear by using the numeric clues already

provided in the boxes. The more numbers you

name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Adopting a rescue dog? Watch out for scams

March 23 wass National Puppy Day, an

annual recognition of the unconditional love

that puppies bring to our lives. However, it is

also a timely reminder about the devastation

caused by puppy scams, with many Canadians

losing hundreds to thousands of dollars

to the second riskiest scam in 2020. Since

the start of this year, Better Business Bureau

(BBB) has been receiving reports which share

that scammers have taken a new approach to

this fraud. If you are looking to rescue a furry

friend, watch out for scams targeting people

who want to adopt a dog from a shelter or

rescue. Scammers are impersonating animal

shelters or posing as individuals trying to find

a new forever home for a dog.

How the scam works

You are searching online for a dog to adopt

and find a new website for an animal shelter or

an ad from an individual wanting to rehome a

puppy. You message them for more information

and receive a convincing, heart-tugging

backstory. In one recent BBB Scam Tracker

report, the victim shared that the scammer

said she wanted to find a new home for her

poodle after a car accident left her unable to

care for the dog. In another case, the scammer

claimed to be the Canadian Kennel Club.

In this version of the puppy scam, the

scammer may not charge for the dog. Instead,

they ask for a refundable deposit to “hold”

the puppy or request payment to ship the

pet to your home. Most scammers ask you to

pay through wire transfer, e-transfer or use a

prepaid debit card or gift card. Although this

scam mostly involves dogs, it can also include

cats and other pets.

After you make a payment, the problems

start. One victim reported driving to the

“shelter” to pick

up their new

dog, only to find

no such address

existed. “I called,

and they texted

me that they are

coming down

with the puppy.

I asked them

where and no

answer. Finally,

after 10 calls the

phone was NOT

accepting any

calls! By then it

was quite clear

I am not getting

the puppy AND

I’m out $300.”

In other versions

of the scam,

the con artists

offer to ship the

dog. However,

to pay for emergency vet visits, additional

shipping fees, or even a COVID-19 test. The

scammers ask for more money to resolve

the problems, often promising to refund it

after the pet is delivered. They may even try

to create a sense of urgency by claiming that

the pet will be euthanized if a payment is not

made. Once they have your money, the scammers

disappear and you realize the dog never

existed.

Pandemic impact

Since the start of the pandemic, the demand

for pets has dramatically increased, with people

seeking to ease the loneliness and tension

of their prolonged time at home. Last year,

pet and pet supplies were the riskiest online

purchase scam category, with Canadians

losing an average of $750 per person. While

puppies remained the most common bait in a

pet scam, 12% of pet scam complaints to BBB

were about kittens or cats.

“The rising demand for pets led to a spike in

pet scams,

where an

online

search

ends with

a potential

pet owner

paying

hundreds

of dollars

or more to

purchase a

pet that ultimately

associated with this scam can help consumers

avoid the heartache of no pet and no money.

How to avoid pet adoption scams

Research the shelter. Visit BBB Scam

Tracker to see if other people have submitted

a report about the organization. Also do an

internet search of the shelter with the word

“scam” and “fraud” to see if anything concerning

pops up in the results.

Never buy or adopt a pet without seeing it

in person. This is the best way to ensure you

are not caught in a con. In

light of the COVID-19 pandemic,

most animal shelters

will allow you to see the animal

by appointment. You

can also consider setting

up a video call so you can

see the pet for adoption and

speak to the owner or a representative

from the shelter.

Since scammers are not

likely to comply with the request, this may

help you to avoid a scam.

Do an internet search of the pet’s image. If

you do find a puppy online, do a a reverse

image search of the photo you see or receive.

If you find multiple pet adoption sites using

the same picture, it is probably a scam.

Use money transfer apps correctly. Protect

yourself from scams by only using money

transfer apps for their intended purpose

-- sending money to people you personally

know.

kind of native soil you have.

Chances are, you will have to

amend the soil if your plants

are to grow vigorously. If

you’ve had a garden in the

same place for years and

years, you may have much the

same problem.

The ideal type of soil for your

kitchen garden is loam. It

contains a balance of all three

soil materials—silt, sand and

clay plus humus, the organic

component of soil, which is

formed by the decomposition

of leaves and other plant

material. Loam has higher pH

and calcium levels because

of its previous organic matter

DO YOU KNOW

YOUR SOIL ?

There are five different soil

types that gardeners and

growers usually encounter.

Each soil type is a combination

of just three types of

weathered rock particles that

make up the soil: sand, silt,

and clay. How these three particles

are combined defines

your soil’s type—how it feels

to the touch, how it holds

water, and how it’s managed,

among other things.

If you are turning over a patch

of ground for the first time,

you will need to know what

SOIL GOAL - LOAM

The type of soil that gardens and gardeners

love is loamy soil. Loam is dark

in colour and is mealy soft, dry and

crumbly in your hands. It has a tight hold

on water and plant food but it drains well,

and air moves freely between soil particles

down to the roots. The feel test for loam

yields a smooth, partly gritty, partly sticky

ball that crumbles easily.

Although loamy soil is the ideal material to

work with, don’t despair if you don’t have

it in your garden yet. Luckily, we can add

the things we are missing...

What do plants ‘eat’?

Soil texture is an important factor in making

nutrients available to the roots of the

plant. So what nutrients do plants need if

they are to grow vigorously?

The Law of the Minimum is a reminder

that a plant’s ability to flourish is limited

by the nutrient or mineral in shortest

supply.

content.

This guide is a basic outline

to the type of soils you may

have, and how to correct it so

that your garden flourishes.

1. SANDY SOIL

Sandy soil is dry and gritty to

the touch, and because the

particles have huge spaces

between them, it can’t hold

on to water.

To test, roll the slightly wet

sandy soil in your palms, no

ball should be formed and it

crumbles through your fingers

easily.

IMPROVE SANDY SOIL:

2. SILTY SOIL

Silty soil has much smaller

particles than sandy soil so it’s

smooth to the touch. When

moistened, it’s soapy slick.

When you roll it between your

All plants need nitrogen, phosphorus and

potassium to grow. Nitrogen (N) nitrogen

is largely responsible for the growth

of leaves on the

plant. Phosphorus

(P) Phosphorus is

largely responsible

for root growth

and flower and

fruit development.

Potassium (K)

Potassium is a

nutrient that helps

the overall functions

of the plant

perform correctly.

If you buy packaged

fertilizer you

have probably noticed

a numbering

system that follows

this pattern: 15-10-

Silty soil retains water longer,

it’s fairly fertile, but can’t hold

on to its nutrients as long as

one would like.

IMPROVE SILTY SOIL

ADD SAND

3. CLAY SOIL

Clay soil has the smallest

particles among the three

so it has good water storage

qualities. It’s sticky to the

touch when wet, but smooth

when dry.

Due to the tiny size of its

particles and its tendency to

settle together, little air passes

through its spaces. Because

it’s also slower to drain, it

has a tighter hold on plant

nutrients.

Clay soil is cold and in the

spring, takes time to warm

since the water within also has

to warm up.

known as NPK values. The three-number

series describes the relative concentration

of Nitrogen (the first number, or 15 here)

to Potassium (the 10 above) and Phosphorous

(the 5.)

If moistened soil feels sticky,

rolls up easily, and forms into

a ball or sausage-like shape,

then you’ve got yourself clay.

Strengthening access to local food

New community-led projects in the

Columbia Basin will support access to

affordable, quality, local food for residents,

with an emphasis on assisting

those in need. Community kitchens,

lawns-to-food initiatives and seed-saving

libraries are just a few of the projects

included in Columbia Basin Trust’s

Local Food Access and Recovery

Grants.

“We continue to see increasing interest

in enhancing community growing

spaces, recovering and redistributing

food and using improved technology in

food production,” said Hannah Holden,

Delivery of Benefits Senior Manager

with Columbia Basin Trust. “These

projects will help more Basin residents—especially

those in need—

access locally grown, nutritious foods

from communal growing and processing

spaces, and benefit from knowledge

sharing opportunities.”

Food access and recovery grants are

part of the Trust’s work in local food

production and access, a strategic priority

as directed by Basin residents.

Over $850,000 will support 24 projects

across the region that focus on expanding

opportunities for residents to create

No kidding! Without a paddle. He is a friendly but

healthy meals, enhance social and cultural

community connections through

food and reduce food waste.

The Village of Warfield will increase

food production and sharing by placing

garden boxes and pollinator plots

throughout municipal greenspaces.

The Warfield Food Advisory Committee

will also offer food-related workshops,

organize plant exchanges and

seed swaps. Volunteers and committee

members will engage the community,

and grow and redistribute unused food

to residents.

“Food is a fundamental part of our

human experience. We hope this project

will not only build food resilience,

but also increase community connections,”

said Cyra Yunkws, Village of

Warfield Councillor and Chair of the

Warfield Food Advisory Committee.

“We are grateful for Columbia Basin

Trust for funding this initiative and

look forward to seeing the food and

flowers throughout Warfield.”

A low-barrier culinary tool lending

Community Association. The library of

resources and skill-sharing will enable

greater access to local food on a yearround

basis, while reducing food waste.

Tools include canners, juicers, mixers,

dehydrators, grinders, smokers and

more. Shared use will support sustainability

and building community connections

as many tools are not required

for daily use.

“We appreciate this support for

increasing our capacity for local food

production and processing. Having

access to these tools will make preparation

and preservation of locally grown

food more efficient and easier, particularly

for younger people who are just

starting out,” said Karen Newmoon,

Chair of the Johnsons Landing Community

Association. “Sharing these

tools will foster a sense of community

cohesion and contribute to reducing

our ecological footprints, while increasing

the use of seasonally abundant,

locally grown foods.”

Thanks for your support!

INTEGRATED RESOURCE USE

Are you a multiple resource user? Are you a back country camper,

prospector, rockhound, gold panner, hiker, mushroom picker, Quad

rider, snowmobiler, berry picker, wood gatherer, mountain biker, hunter,

trapper, fisherman or do you just simply enjoy the backcountry?

Chances are if you are a rural resident, a native kootenay born, or new

here, you probably do several of the above activities. It’s called lifestyle.

In other words, a multiple resource user. We all fit into more than one

category or another, that we all depend on natural

resources in rural BC is a fact.

This is the first step in recognising that wildlife (big

game) values may take precedence over other resource

issues and use.

In order to multiply our wildlife heritage we should be

managing our forest land base in such a way that will

multiply our big game numbers. If Finland, Norway,

and Sweden can, we can too.

This is no easy task. Wildlife must be recognized by all

users---its value and its use. We have a wildlife heritage,

a resource worth perpetuating. This requires better

stewardship and management of our crown lands.

This also requires access to these lands for all users.

The wilful and deliberate destruction of traditional forestry

and mining roads is detrimental to protecting our

forests, our wildlife resources, watersheds and denies

citizens access to our crown lands for recreational and

all other purposes.

Our goal is to have our government adopt an integrated

use philosophy, leading to increased big game

numbers, and to maintain backcountry access. To accomplish

this we require Integrated land use planning,

including access management, forest thinning, fire

management, predator management focused on big

game multiplication leading to future government policy.

Sunrise 2000

Rotary Presents

Summer Fun

2021 50/50

Would winning $16,000

be a great way to begin your

summer?

The Castlegar Sunrise

2000 Rotary Club is excited

to present its first online

50/50 to the Kootenays and

beyond. With traditional in

person fundraising avenues

still on hold, club members

continue to seek new

and innovative ways to be

able to support local community

organizations and

projects, while continuing

to uphold global commitments.

Fred Hughes leads

the committee for this venture.

He says, “We’re excited

about exploring online

fundraising, while our usual

in person events are not

possible, under BC Gaming

Event Licence #128189.

Net available proceeds will

be donated to local service

organizations supporting

food security, mental health

and grief counselling.

All of these areas have

seen dramatic increases in

demand over the past year.”

Beneficiaries for the fundraiser

are New Life Church

Food Feast, Castlegar Hospice

Society, and BCSPCA

Castlegar Branch. Ticket

sales open on April 1, 2021

and close on May 31, 2021.

Tickets are $10 each, 3 for

$25, or 7 for $50. Maximum

50/50 payout will be

$16,000. The 50/50 is a draw

where the money received

in ticket sales is divided

evenly between the winner

and the charity. Ticket purchasers

must be 19 years

of age or older. Tickets can

be purchased online at:

https://summerfun2021.rafflenexus.com/a/NEWS

Increased access to art therapy

Announcing the online

Inner Compass Art Therapy

Clinic, a simple and accessible

way for Canadians to find the

specific mental health support

they need by providing timely

access to affordable art therapy

online.

The Kutenai Art Therapy

Institute Association

(KATIA), announced this

week the launch of the Inner

Compass Art Therapy Clinic,

an online service available at

www.innercompassclinic.com

that matches Canadian individuals,

businesses, teams, and

groups with qualified art therapists

from the comfort and

privacy of their own homes.

KATIA created Inner Compass

to help increase the

accessibility of high-quality

art therapy services at a time

when the mental health needs

of Canadians are greater than

ever and access to services is

limited by social distancing.

Even before the pandemic, 1

in 5 Canadians reported experiencing

mental health issues

or mental illness each year.

Since the onset of the pandemic,

according to the Canadian

Centre for Addiction and

Mental Health, 50% of Canadians

reported worsening

mental health and many have

seen their stress levels double.

While there are a growing

number of options for online

talk therapy, the non-verbal

nature of art therapy is particularly

suited to address topics

that people struggle to express

in words while providing an

experiential outlet for clients

to explore their challenges and

strengths. Art therapy is used

to address issues including

grief and loss, trauma, mental

health challenges, relationship

difficulties, addiction, and

more.

Compass, visit https://www.

Selkirk College discontinues

men’s hockey team

After 15 years of competing at the

varsity level in the British Columbia

Intercollegiate Hockey League

(BCIHL), Selkirk College has

announced that the men’s hockey

team will be discontinued due to

budgetary constraints.

Selkirk College will no longer

ice a men’s hockey team,

announcing that the program

will be discontinued

due to budgetary constraints.

Competing in the British

Columbia Intercollegiate

Hockey League (BCIHL)

since 2006, the Selkirk College

Saints’ current players,

coaches and team staff were

informed of the decision this

week. With tightening budgets

moving forward, focus

for Selkirk College athletics

will be geared towards overall

recreation offerings for

the college community.

“This was a very difficult

decision, but with our current

fiscal reality and shifting

priorities, we need to focus

on what is best for our entire

student body,” says John

Kincaid, Vice President of

Students & Advancement.

“Men’s hockey has been an

exciting part of the college’s

history and over the last 15

years, this current team has

represented our community

extremely well in the

BCIHL. We appreciate all the

effort put into this program

over the years by everyone

involved and our communities

have been very supportive

of the student-athletes.

This decision was necessary

to ensure overall success for

Tuesday thru Sunday

the entire college in the coming

years.”

Selkirk College has weathered

the challenges brought

on by COVID-19, but the

pandemic has impacted

enrolment numbers. Budget

projections for the coming

years point to continued

pandemic ripples.

As the college moves

forward in recovery and

renewal, health and recreation

will continue to play

an important role in operations

as in-person activity on

campuses increases over the

coming months.

“Student life and overall

healthy campuses require a

broad offering of recreational

pursuits that are inclusive

and accessible to all our

learners,” says Kincaid. “We

have provided this in the past

and we will provide these

opportunities going forward.

The direction we are heading

with our focus will have a

positive impact on the wider

student experience.”
