WELCOME EDITOR

Welcome to our Spring and

Summer 2021 newsletter

It’s hard to believe that it’s been five years since we

started sending you this twice yearly update on how

your support makes such a difference to Liverpool

Heart and Chest Hospital.

From helping us to become the only centre in the

UK to undertake robotic heart and lung surgery to

reducing the development of delirium in our Intensive

Care Patients you have helped us change thousands

of lives for the better. Not forgetting, of course, the

steadfast way you have stood with us during the

Covid-19 pandemic and the support you have shown

to our dedicated and hard-working staff. We really

can’t thank you enough for all you do.

We hope that you enjoy this edition which highlights

some of the work that we have done this year in

our Annual Review and we look forward to seeing

you again in the Autumn in, hopefully better and

brighter times.

The difference

you have made

Highfield House Training

and Education Centre

The care, education and training of our staff have never

been more important than the last 12 months.

New practices and procedures

have had to be introduced at a

pace to deal with the Covid-19

pandemic as well as, of course,

the need for the continuous

updating of skills to ensure that

our staff are at the forefront of

the latest developments.

This is why the provision of

a dedicated area for training,

education and facilities for

on-call staff was a priority for

us during 2020. The hospital

had already provided nearly

half a million pounds for this

development and the charity

Ground floor

was able to secure a further £200,000 of funding

to make the new Highfield House Training Centre

something really special. This new development

will be key to ensuring that our staff stay as leaders

in the field of heart and lung care for many years to

come and we want to thank you for helping us to

make this happen.

Highfield House

will provide:

ɤ Considerably expanded

facilities for our on-call

staff, providing a place

where they can rest

and recharge

ɤ Two dedicated training

areas utilising the latest

technology to ensure our

expertise can be shared

not only with our own

staff but also those from

other medical institutions

ɤ A completely

refurbished library

space where students

and staff can update

their knowledge

Rhubarb Cake

Step 1

Preheat oven to 350°. Butter

baking tin. Whisk baking powder,

salt, and 1 cup all-purpose flour

in a medium bowl. Whisk eggs,

egg yolk, and 1½ cups sugar in

a large bowl until very pale and

thick, ab. Whisk melted butter,

sour cream, rum, and lemon zest

in a small bowl. Whisk butter

mixture into egg mixture. Add

dry ingredients and fold in until

batter is smooth; scrape into

prepared baking tin. Chill 10

minutes to let batter set.

Step 2

Arrange rhubarb over batter

trimming as needed. Don’t press

fruit into batter—just let it rest

on the surface. Sprinkle with

more sugar and bake until cake

is golden on top and browned

around the sides, 45–55 minutes.

Transfer baking tin to a wire rack

and let cake cool for 10 minutes.

Slide a knife around sides of

cake to loosen. Place on rack to

cool completely.

Ingredients

8 servings

4 tbsp. melted unsalted butter,

cooled, plus more roomtemperature

for pan

1 cup all-purpose flour,

plus more for pan

¾ tsp. baking powder

½ tsp. salt

2 large eggs

1 large egg yolk

1½ cups sugar, plus

more for sprinkling

¼ cup sour cream

2 tbsp. dark rum

2 tsp. finely grated lemon zest

13 oz. rhubarb stalks, halved

length wise if thick

A 9"-diameter springform

This cake is

designed to be

mixed by hand

and make sure

you leave the

stalks whole, as

chopped rhubarb

is more likely to

be swallowed

up by the batter

and sink to the

bottom.

COVID CHAMPIONS

“A huge thank

you from all of

us at LHCH”

This amazing sum

will help us do so

much including:

Mailforce marvels

New, lighter PPE equipment will provide

more comfort for our staff working

long hours in covid wards.

As part of the

overwhelming public

response in support of

the NHS at the beginning

of the pandemic the Daily

Mail set up its own charity,

MailForce.

The aim was to raise funds to

provide hospitals throughout

the UK with the equipment they

needed to protect staff in the

fight against Covid-19.

The grant allows us to expand

our Covid Testing area.

In January 2021 we were absolutely

thrilled to learn that we were one

of the hospitals to receive a grant

of £284,000 to help us.

We can’t thank the Trustees

of MailForce and of course the

readers of the Daily Mail enough

for this magnificent donation.

It will make such a difference to

our work and will help to keep

our staff and patients safe.

So a HUGE THANK YOU from

all of us at LHCH.

Special air filtration

units will cleanse

the air in clinic

areas providing

a covid safe

environment.

ɤ Air purifying machines for

consultation areas

ɤ Special washer/dryers for our

PPE equipment

ɤ Air Powered Respirators for

our staff working on the

Intensive Care Unit

ɤ A new Theatre ventilation unit

ɤ And an extension to the

Covid-19 testing space at

Tockman Clinic.

Coming

The LHCH Charity

Annual Review

2020 to 2021

Every two years we ask

our donors to give us their

opinion on how we are

doing and if there is anything

we could be doing better.

The next Questionnaire will be

mailed to all our donors in June

so please do keep an eye out for

it and give us your thoughts and

opinions.

The questionnaire really does

play an important part in helping

us not only to plan for the future

but also to learn how you like us

to communicate with you, what

you are interested in receiving

and how often you would like

us to contact you.

This last point is particularly

important as we don’t want to

send you unwanted or unneeded

communications – saving us

money and stopping you getting

cross with us!

So if you could help us by

completing and returning it to

us when you receive it we really

would appreciate it.

A year like no other.

REVIEW 20-21

Supporting our patients

This year has seen

Liverpool Heart and

Chest have to adapt and

change at a pace almost

unthinkable before the

event of the Covid-19

pandemic and LHCH

Charity has been there

every step of the way

helping them in all that

they do.

We supported the

establishment of

tele-medicine for

remote consultations.

Tele-Medicine

Thanks to you we were able to provide telemedicine

facilities for those patients who

could not visit in person due to the risk.

This is especially true of those living with Cystic

Fibrosis who are very susceptible to infection but also

most in need of routine monitoring of their condition.

Driving out delirium

Our appeal to help us significantly

reduce the development of

delirium in intensive care patients

was a fantastic success.

To date we have been able to install

Sky Tiles in each of the 6 intensive care

rooms with no access to natural light.

Although we have been slowed down

by the pandemic - plans are now well in

hand to enable us to adapt our outdoor

garden space to make it accessible

for our patients whatever the British

weather throws at us!

Sky Tiles helping to reduce

the development of

delirium in our most

poorly patients.

Every little

helps

As well as large projects

such as these we have also

made a number of small

grants that have made a

big difference.

For example we were able to

purchase special badges for

our patients who have hidden

disabilities so that staff can take

the extra care that they need and

an app to help our therapists in

their work with people on the

long road to recovery.

Using tele-medicine meant that our patients could

meet with multiple health professionals at one time

to discuss their condition, minimising their risk,

reducing their need to travel as well as making it more

efficient for our staff enabling us to see more people.

Supporting our

staff now and

into the future

Our staff are what makes

Liverpool Heart and Chest

Hospital the outstanding

hospital it is.

Caring for them and

making sure that they

have the skills and tools

they need to do the job

is one of our highest

priorities. This has never

been more important

and we have assisted with

several projects to make

life better and easier for

our dedicated team.

Staff enjoy

catching up in

the Staff Hub.

The Staff Hub

At the beginning of the pandemic LHCH

Charity provided the funds to change

an old record office into a warm and

welcoming Staff Hub.

A place where they could go, relax, recharge and

share their experiences with others. This has proved

an invaluable place for staff and has helped them to

carry on during some of the most difficult times of

their working lives.

Making the working

environment better

We also offered wards

and other areas grants

of £500 to improve their

own working areas.

From the purchase of microwaves

so they could grab a hot snack

to providing more comfortable

seating in staff areas – every grant

made working long shifts in PPE

just a little easier.

The skills to

do the job

We have made a major investment

in ensuring our staff and students

have the best training and

education facilities.

You will have seen the plans for the

development of Highfield House on

Pages 4 and 5.

This will make a huge difference not

only for our current staff but also for

our ability to train the medical staff

of tomorrow.

A break

outside

Getting outside, away from the

wards and enjoying the fresh air

for a few minutes also proved to

be an invaluable aid to helping

staff cope. LHCH Charity, in

conjunction with NHS Charities

Together, was able to provide

the funds to purchase outdoor

seating areas for staff to enjoy.

WHAT YOU’VE BEEN UP TO

WHAT YOU’VE BEEN UP TO

Phil with his

friends and

colleagues from

the Vodafone

Operational

Readiness Team.

Top of the world!

Snowdonia.

Ian Kelsall

“The hardest

thing I have

ever done”

For many people the challenge of tackling

Mount Snowden would be daunting enough

but for 37 year old Philip Thornhill there were

additional obstacles that would make even

the most fearless of us have second thoughts.

Philip was born with a condition where the two

main blood vessels to the heart are switched from

their “normal” position meaning that blood flows

to the lung, picks up oxygen and, instead of flowing

around the body it goes back to the lungs. At just 1

year old he had to undergo surgery to reverse this.

In addition Philip also lives with Arthritis in multiple

joints and Ankylosing Spondylitis in his spine.

Despite this he remains cheerful

and optimistic and puts this

down to the support of his

wife, 3 children and Liverpool

Heart and Chest Hospital who

have helped him manage his

condition for over 20 years.

He says: “The hospital’s been

great over the years so when

my employer challenged us

to do something for charity I

knew immediately who I wanted

to support. I shared my story

with my colleagues who voted

unanimously for LHCH Charity.

We decided to undertake a

sponsored climb of Snowden

and we thrilled to raise £856.

This was matched by Vodaphone

so in total we were able to present

the charity with £1,721 in total.”

Philip goes on to say: “For me

personally the walk up Snowden

was the hardest thing I have ever

done but thanks to my family

and colleagues I kept at it and I

was delighted to be able to give

something back to the hospital

that has done so much for me.”

What a tremendous achievement

and our grateful thanks go to

Philip and everyone involved in

raising such a fantastic amount!
