WATERWORLD
THROUGH THE LENS OF MAXWEL HOHN
WORDS | NANCY PINCOMBE
8

the sunshine coast magazine
Primal, archetypal, a thrilling immersion
in another element, diving is both
a popular sport and the stuff of
our most memorable dreams. The
clean, clear, cold water of the Pacific
Northwest offers a wide spectrum of
diving opportunities, from an easy
and simple poke around the pillars of a dock to 22
knots of current in places like Seymour Narrows.
Maxwel Hohn grew up in Pender Harbour and
started out like so many of us did, by swimming
and snorkelling as a child in our many pristine
lakes and protected waterways. While his first
official scuba dive was in Utila, Honduras, and
he has dived all over the world since (in places
like Vietnam, Greece, the Bahamas, Norway, and
Tanzania), Hohn maintains that right here, where
he grew up, provides opportunities for some of the
most exciting diving.
“What comes to mind,” asks Hohn, “when you
imagine a scuba diver’s paradise? Most people
envision a tropical destination filled with coral reefs
and warm currents but one of the most fascinating
destinations is Vancouver Island. The coastal
waters of British Columbia were rated by dive
pioneer Jacques Cousteau himself as the secondbest
diving destination in the world, ranked along
with the famous Great Barrier Reef in Australia.”
And while our cold water and strong currents can
make for challenging dives, it is just these factors
that help create the rich biodiversity in our area.
“Many of the marine organisms are dependent on
the currents to deliver their food (zooplankton) and
to disperse their offspring. These strong currents
and cold waters can create some of the most
challenging dive conditions in the world, but also
allow for conditions where marine life is abundant
and organisms can grow to larger dimensions than
seen in any other parts of the world.”
WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY OF
THE YEAR COMPETITION
Even the most simple-to-access places can yield a
gorgeous and colourful array of sea life just a few
feet below the surface. One of Hohn's most wellknown
images is an underwater photo of pillars
just off Campbell River. The crowded colours and
thriving life bring to mind an underwater high-rise
in a vibrant part of town.
Gooseneck barnacles, sea pens, anemones, sea stars,
extraordinarily colourful and diverse nudibranchs, jellyfish, kelp
forests undulating gracefully in the currents, curious cavorting sea
lions . . . our pristine depths offer countless delights. But what kind
of sightings still excite a seasoned diver?
“The most exciting species to see under water is the giant Pacific
octopus. They can reach lengths of thirty feet!”
Just as at-home in freshwater, Hohn's underwater photography
includes rivers and lakes and gives us an intimate view of these
less-often photographed environments and the biodiversity there.
Hohn's videography has received a lot of recent attention and has
won him many awards. The haunting “Call of the Coastal Wolves”
won a 2021 Best Documentary Short Film and Best Nature Travel
Film. His absolutely enchanting short film, “Tadpoles: The Big Little
Migration,” was tenderly narrated by Hohn himself and shot in a
remote Vancouver Island lake over several years. “Tadpoles” won
no fewer than eight awards.
The advances in technology have been dizzying in all fields, but
perhaps none so drastic as in underwater filming. Hohn says the
latest and best is a must.
“I’m an absolute sucker for dive gear and camera equipment. It’s so
exciting to see new products and technology progressively improve
every year. To be able to work in demanding environments requires
the best gear available. I love applying this specialized tech to
explore and document the underwater world, weather it’s in freezing
conditions, under ice, deep in a cave, or in a tropical paradise. It
needs to work and be dependable when I need it to be.”
He is currently filming for several exciting series to be aired on BBC,
HELLO SPRING!
Welcome to spring, a season of optimism and new
beginnings here on the Sunshine Coast. You will see
some of this as you read through this edition of ZOOM.
Despite the year-long Covid-19 pandemic, we do have
a lot to be thankful for, living on the coast. The vaccine
campaign is well under way, and within a couple of
months the vast majority of us should have added protection as we move
forward. Throughout the past year, Coastal residents have most certainly
been living in a safer bubble than in most places in Canada and the world.
We have had our natural spaces and the freedom to hike and go for beach
walks with our families and pets.
All of this has caught the eyes of a younger group of up-and-comers who
have discovered our Coast in the past year. For them the Sunshine Coast
offers an opportunity to raise their young children in a home with a backyard,
and many can work from home. They have brought their entrepreneurial
spirit and have started new businesses. Our stories will introduce you to
the new faces and the opportunities they are seeking here.
The pandemic has also kept us at home, renovating and landscaping
our properties. Did you know the pandemic has made us more aware of
the importance of landscaping? It is now an equal priority to kitchen and
bathroom renos and builds. We also live in a microclimate second to none
in Canada. Our growing pallete is huge.
But perhaps the most exciting news revolves around the opening of a new
hotel resort and restaurant at Davis Bay, and the long-awaited pub and
restaurant at the Trail Bay Mall. Cheers everyone, it’s all here in ZOOM.
Welcome to spring on the Sunshine Coast!
GARDENS & LAWNS
the sunshine coast magazine
GARDENING WITH CHILDREN OR
GRANDCHILDREN IS AN EXCELLENT WAY
TO HELP THEM UNDERSTAND THE CYCLES
OF NATURE, WHERE AND HOW FOOD
GROWS. THIS CAN CREATE STRONGER
BONDS WITHIN OUR FAMILIES AND WITH
NATURE, LASTING A LIFETIME.
You can tell spring has arrived on the Sunshine Coast. While the rest of Canada
still has shovels at their doors, we have been watching flowers grow. Our many
local gardening and lawn-care businesses are fully stocked, and the talented
landscape teams are already hard at work all over town. Now is the time to get
ready for spring.
SO WHERE TO START?
Planning is like seeds to gardening. With the right seeds, tending, and watering,
a beautiful bounty of flowers or food rewards our efforts. It's important to think
ahead. It's dispiriting for everyone (maybe especially the plants) when we realize
that the spot is too shady, the shrubberies too large, or the pathway too trampled
for the plantings we've chosen.
Planning starts with the all-important question: what do I/we want?
When I first started planning, that question was too broad. As I hope you will see,
there are so many variables we can easily overlook, so let’s break it down.
FOUNDATION LIFESTYLE QUESTIONS
Really spend some time with these questions. Visit or look at gardens in your
community, at your friends’ homes, or online and feel your way to the answers.
What fits you, your lifestyle, and your goals? What makes you envious?
Ask yourself:
1. What is my budget now and my ongoing maintenance budget?
2. Do I want to plan my landscape myself or work with a professional?
3. Do I want a flower or vegetable garden, or just a place to relax and entertain,
or a combination?
4. What is my lifestyle—will I be here during the summers?
5. How much ongoing work do I want to do?
6. Will I do the ongoing maintenance, or will I hire a service company?
7. What is my experience and knowledge base? Am I okay with things not
always working out in my garden/yard?
8. Am I thinking of selling my home in the next two to five years?
9. What makes me happy when I am outdoors or in a garden/yard?
10. What do I intend to do with any flowers or produce I grow?
spring 2021 17

HELLO SPRING
FOUNDATION GARDEN QUESTIONS
1. What type of soil do I have in my yard? What is the soil’s pH? Does it need
balancing or fortifying?
2. How does my soil drain—any pooling or standing water? Is my yard sloped?
3. What climate/planting zone am I in? Watering restrictions in the summer?
4. When and where in my yard does the sun come and go? How much is in shade?
5. What type of pests are common in my area? How will I deal with them?
6. Do I know what plant and pest species are invasive and what to do if I find them?
7. Do I want any special features or do I need to incorporate any issues into
my plans?
8. Is my neighbourhood or community leaning toward natural pest solutions?
What do I need to know to ensure harmony with my neighbours?
9. Are there wild foragers and visitors in my area? How will I deal with them?
10. Do I have pets? If so, how will I ensure their health as I create my landscape?
11. What do I need to include to be successful—greenhouse, garden shed, compost
bin, patio stones, etc.?
12. How close is my garden to the house? To my water source? Is it easily accessed
by wheelbarrow or truck, for soil deliveries?
With clear answers to these questions, you are ready to begin creating your landscape
plan. If you choose to work with a professional to design and create your space, these
answers will give them a head start and help you see results more quickly. ·
BASICS OF SPRING
PREPARATION
LAWNS
• Tune your mower
• Clean, sharpen, and replace or repair
damaged tools
• Clean up your yard, including raking and/or
de-thatching your lawn
• Edge and aerate
• Check the pH of your soil
• Overseed
• Water
• Fertilize
• Watch for weeds
ESSENTIAL TOOLS
Whether planting flower beds or putting in a veggie
garden, here are the lawn-care essentials you need
in your shed for the basic yard to-do's:
• Lawnmower
• Lawn trimmer
• Leaf rake
• Soil rake
• Spreader
• Long-handled spade
• Soil knife
• Double-handed hoe
• Hand pruner and pole pruner
• Lopper
• Hedge shears
• Hose
• Wheelbarrow
• Watering tools, nozzles, sprinklers
GARDENS
• Pull those weeds
• Prune the summer-blooming flowering shrubs
• Check the soil pH and augment/fertilize/add manure or sea-soil to
the beds as needed
• Add 5–8 cm of mulch around trees, shrubs, and emerging bulbs
• Inspect trees and shrubs for winter damage and cut out any
crossing branches
• Rake off/trim any winter-killed, brown leaves from last year's
perennial flowers (This bothers some people, because leaf cover
is important for many small animals and insects, such as
bumblebees, newts . . .)
• Divide perennials
• Rake matted or excessive leaves off the lawn and out of
groundcover beds
• Start seeds indoors
• If you don’t have a compost pile/box think of adding one—please
don’t put meat or dairy products in the compost as they attract
vermin, and don’t compost weeds
If you are new to gardening, lawn care, and landscaping, the Sunshine
Coast’s local gardening suppliers are happy to help. They offer a wide
variety of all the essentials you need, so don’t hesitate to ask for their
advice. If you need to hire a professional, many garden/landscaping
architects are available to help. Ask a neighbour for a referral; there will
be someone working in your area.
If you would like to meet fellow gardeners and be part of a growing
community, there are a number of garden clubs on the Sunshine Coast,
including:
ART
KERRI LUCIANI
INSPIRED CREATIONS
WORDS | NANCY PINCOMBE
IMAGES | EDMUND ARCEO
For decades, long-time Sunshine Coast
resident Kerri Luciani has been following
her passion to create. Her practice has
included jewellery, beads, painting, quilting,
and metalwork. This journey has led her on
a wonderfully meandering path, following
beauty and inspiration. When it came to choosing a
place to live, however, the Sunshine Coast called to her
very directly.
“I moved from Calgary in 1989 to Vancouver. I did not
know about the Sunshine Coast. The first time I heard
the name, I said to my boyfriend at the time, “I think
that sounds like home.” I had a very strong feeling
about it. We came over here for our honeymoon in '92
and moved here a year later.”
Luciani’s artistic focus on beads and one-of-a-kind
jewellery lasted thirty years and gave her ample time
to share her craft, teaching workshops for adults and
doing kids' parties.
Fascinated by the longevity and versatility of metal,
she jumped at the chance to learn to shape, stain, and
texturize recycled steel. The results were gratifying.
Working with an array of forms ranging from abstract
shapes to lifelike figures, experimenting with unusual
hues, and incorporating other found and recycled
materials gave Luciani the ability to model some of the
beauty she saw in her everyday life.
“I am loving the new recycled metal that I can paint on. I
am so inspired by the creatures in the Nicholas Sontag
Marine Education centre in the Gibsons Public Market
where I work part time. My phone is full of videos and
photos after every shift. I love to create themed wind
chimes and also mounting many of the pieces onto my
collection of driftwood.”
For the metalwork, Luciani collaborates with friend Roz
Stanton, from whom she purchases the raw shapes
that she will bend, colour-texturize, and incorporate
with other materials. Creative types can find the
possibilities overwhelming sometimes. Limiting
materials to what can be found, repurposed, and
recycled, can, in its way, be freeing.
“I love that it’s recycled steel. Each piece turns out
different and unique because of the makeup of all the
variants in the steel. These pieces will be around for
years and changing with the elements, weathering
over time.”
Luciani's work can be found up and down the lower
Coast at Mosaic Emporium (Davis Bay), Coastal Art
Gallery (Sechelt), One Flower One Leaf (Gibsons), and
Ground Waves (Pender Harbour). ·
PETER R NICHOLLS
CREATIVE REFLECTIONS
WORDS | CJ WOODS & PETER R NICHOLLS
IMMORTAL CITY | As I walked through the rubble of the abandoned immortal city, I wondered what lived, what stories
and memories once filled the streets. A composition at dead centre, nothing with breath, no footpaths left, all overgrown
by the simple and inevitable decay of time. When great cities fall, they leave behind a deep feeling of desolation,
reminding us of the enormity of lost potential. These immortal buildings now appear as nothing less than concrete
graves. The city, once the centre of all, has now been rendered less, painted over with splats of colour combined with
peeling paint, all to remind us of its diminishing importance. It has become symbolic of both emptiness and form.
26

A MOMENT IN TIME | The subtleties and imaginings of a culture
with two people intimately interacting. The lines of texture covering
them are symbolic of how culture is hardwired onto and into us. A
subjective interpretation, a feminine character on the left bows her
head as she considers a serious concern expressed by the person
on the right. The textured lines around their foreheads hint at two
individuals sharing a certain way of life. They are immortalized into
these lines even as their culture fades from our awareness.
MAP OF LIFE | The places we have been, the pathways of a former
adventure. We are always fading into and out of moments in life. The
beginning and the end are thus the essence of each sacred being. The
pose reflects her adventures with a gentle beauty and quiet poise.
ALTERED DIMENSIONS | Growth and potential of the physical body
offset by the slow, steady eradication of all physical manifestations.
Altered Dimensions is a body, even while posing with a transparent mask
(cling wrap), fading to nothing. Reflections on life and beauty amount
to little more than traces of a body, emptied even of its temporal nature
despite attempts at clinging to that which falls/returns to formlessness.
MIND PARTICLES | Our minds are like uncompromising
grids. Even with body firmly planted in life and with death calling
(inevitable), our mind prevents us from seeing our actual
(present) condition of death's steady transformation, allowing
denial to remain fixed, even while the particles are separating
from the body.
the sunshine coast magazine
Many believe it is the very soul of the vibrant art culture that exists on the
Sunshine Coast. Now in its twenty-third year, the Gibsons School of the Arts
has given hundreds of aspiring artists the confidence to go forward in a
direction they might have been afraid to follow.
Long-time board member Phyllis Surges believes the gradual expansion of the
school, with its many workshops and influences, is one of the main reasons
why the Sunshine Coast has more practising artists per capita than anywhere else in Canada.
Marlene Lowden, a homegrown, well-known, and successful artist who will be instructing her
first summer workshop at the school, says hundreds and hundreds of aspiring artists and
professionals practise in home studios, basements, and garages along our Coast. Lowden,
who has sold her paintings internationally and displayed her work in galleries across Canada,
says the school has provided opportunities that never before existed for locals to immerse
themselves in art in their own backyard.
The Art Crawl, which attracts thousands of locals and visiting art enthusiasts to the Sunshine
Coast, began more than a decade after the school was established. With the exception
of this past Covid year, the three-day October event has grown in stature every year. It now
accommodates close to 150 artists who showcase various art styles in their home studios
from Gibsons to Earls Cove. While the Crawl and the Gibsons School of the Arts are different
programs, there is a definite positive connection between them. They energize and grow the art
community, promoting its thriving culture here. Together, the school’s art classes and the Crawl
bring several hundred thousand dollars of economic input to our Sunshine Coast communities
as hundreds of visitors, students, and instructors seek accommodation and support the area’s
dining establishments.
This summer’s art-course spaces are booking up at the Gibsons School of the Arts. Long-time
board member and volunteer Donnie McAra remembers the earlier years when just about all of
the instructors had to be recruited from afar. They came from Ontario, the US, and even New
Zealand. This year, the expanded workshops have eight Canadian instructors, three from the
Sunshine Coast, four from other parts of BC, and just one is from out of province. McAra says
it is a credit to the success of the non-profit teaching programs and support they give our
artists. About half of the expected 120 summer students will be from the Sunshine Coast; that
means sixty people, and the family and friends who join them, will be staying on the Coast. The
longer four-day programs will keep participants here for perhaps a week or more. The economic
spinoffs are big.
The four-day teaching sessions are unique. Most art courses in other communities are a day,
two at the most. The board’s president, Susan Rowan, says the longer sessions give students a
much better understanding of their talents and encourage a desire to continue and grow in one
or more disciplines, such as oil, acrylic, pastels, and watercolours.
The three local instructors are Marleen Vermeulen, Greta Guzek, and Marlene Lowden. Vermeulen
was a student at the school about fifteen years ago. Since then her career has taken off and she
is considered one of Canada’s top artists. Her work appears in galleries internationally, and her
unique paintings have been sold around the world. Vermeulen says the classes are intense and
meaningful, providing full engagement over the longer period. The artists make friendships and
connections for life, and the programs are confidence builders, a necessary ingredient to foster
growth within the art community.
Greta Guzek has been teaching the longest. An acclaimed artist herself, she says the summer
courses taught in the rich natural environment of our Sunshine Coast have given aspiring artists
a creative depth and vibrance that spills over into our community at large.
Eight workshops will be held in July and August, and everyone is hoping that with the vaccines,
the Covid pandemic won’t get in the way. Spaces are still available. Go to the Gibsons School of
the Arts website at gibsonsartschool.net for details. ·
I
WORDS | BRIAN COXFORD
If you want to know what is changing in your community, ask a realtor; Darrin Goss will tell you the
market on the Sunshine Coast is the hottest it has been since he acquired his real-estate license
sixteen years ago. Driving the tight market are younger buyers. They make up fifty percent of his
client list, a sharp contrast to past years when the buyers were mostly retired seniors. “They are highly
educated, polite, direct, motivated, and decisive. The first question they ask: ‘What is the bandwidth?’”
The Covid pandemic is the catalyst, the Re/Max Agent says. They want a yard for their kids to play in
and a home office. Some of the deals are financed by the bank of mom and dad, who want a safe haven
for their children and grandkids—an early inheritance. Three of Goss’s clients were Telus technicians
moving here to service the high-speed Internet.
A byproduct of all of this is new neighbours and a younger group of enthusiastic Sunshine Coast
entrepreneurs with new ideas, a win for everyone.
. . .
During this growth period on the Coast, Stephanie Taylor has welcomed more than twenty
new residents to the Coast every month since October. “The response has been phenomenal.”
Her new company, Sunshine Coast Neighbourhood Welcome, with the help of many supportive
community partners, delivers a different kind of grocery bag to newcomers, with a bottle of wine, store
vouchers, important contact information, dog treats, and more. “What I am sharing is the heart of the
Sunshine Coast.”
. . .
At twenty-six, Shannon Heavens is building a thriving family business. Her Elphinstone Property Care
in Gibsons looks after lawns, patios, plants, and landscaping. She recently removed seven hedges for
a homeowner, then took the plants home to recycle them to another client. “We don’t use gas-powered
equipment. Electric- and battery-powered tools are cleaner, with thirty percent less noise.” Shannon is
also working with two developers to recycle their construction waste.
. . .
Who knew that real estate and golf careers would be a winning combination? Newcomers to the Coast,
Janai York of York and Associates and her husband, teaching pro Chris Lowe, are finding it is the
perfect mix. Janai, who comes from a marketing background, was a Medallion Award realtor in her first
year. She is on track to sell forty to fifty homes this year. Chris has owned a golf course and taught at
many others in Metro Vancouver. In Sechelt, Janai sends her real estate clients to Chris for lessons at
Blue Ocean Golf Club, and he sends his students to her to shop for a home. Working together on the
Coast, they are both shooting par.
SUSAN SELZER,, FORGET ME NOT REFILL STATION
VANESSA NICOLA & CHARA KRANGLE, OAT OF THE ORDINARY
Another new startup business in Sechelt is Forget Me Not Refill Station.
Susan Selzer’s goal is to reduce single-use plastic on the Coast. She
sells many lifestyle goods supporting low-waste living, plant-based
organic soaps and cleaners, and glass bottles that can be refilled
at her store.
. . .
Chara Krangle’s family has lived in Roberts Creek for more than thirty-five
years. Her dad is a retired school principal. She is a holistic nutritionist and
is now planning to give back to the kids on the Sunshine Coast through
her North Vancouver–based company, Oat of the Ordinary. The business
idea came to her when she was travelling in the US and Canada doing
podcasts for an LA Company, Almost 30. The thirty-year-old found it
difficult to find a good, fast nutritional breakfast. “Covid hit, so we began
testing and planning.” Partnering with her friend Vanessa Nicola, the
young entrepreneurs launched Oat of the Ordinary, producing an easyto-prepare,
organic gluten-free breakfast cereal that contains eleven
grams of vegan protein and just three percent sugar content. The pair got
an endorsement from Arlene Dickinson, a business accelerator and an
original participating investor on Dragon’s Den. Sales of their oatmeal have
doubled, the company is a social media favourite, and now they are giving
back to their community, pledging to donate one of every six breakfast
packs they produce to help some of the thirty percent of children who go
to school without breakfast. When they launch their give-back program,
the very first school to benefit will be here on the Sunshine Coast.
. . .
Joanne van Ginkel, owner of Garten Design in Davis Bay, might be the most
qualified landscaper to come to the Coast. She has a university degree in
landscape architecture and a degree in art history. Working with many
local contractors, her level of expertise includes everything from garden
design to retaining walls. “Landscaping now ranks as high as kitchens and
bathrooms in a development, and not all contractors understand that. In
terms of plants, we live in one of the most diverse places on earth. Our
plant palette in our micro-climates are five times greater than other parts
of Canada and the world.” Joanne is busy. She sees that during Covid,
people are vacationing at home and making landscaping a priority.
Not new to the Coast but ready to open with a new business vision are
Del and Renu Sidhu. For over a year now, Sunshine Coast residents have
been waiting patiently for their new pub and restaurant reveal. After the
year-long pandemic, we all need a place to go, gather, and celebrate,
and their 195-seat Twenty Two Taphouse with indoor and outdoor
entertainment areas will be a popular destination. Twenty-two is the
number of West Coast and Sunshine Coast brews and ciders they will
have on tap. Del says, “We want to be the hub where people can come,
enjoy themselves, and make memories. You can dress up. You won’t
have to go to Vancouver for that special night.” When Covid is over, live
bands will play once a week. The pub menu will be steak, chicken, and
burgers. The Sihdus know all about hospitality. For the past fourteen
years their Saffron Restaurant, which they will continue to own and
operate, has been a favourite in the Trail Bay Mall. The Clayton Family,
which owns the mall, is building Twenty Two Taphouse, with the Sidhus
taking a big hand with the design and furnishings. “We are leasing it.
The excitement and journey has been a great partnership with the
Claytons.” The investment is close to three million dollars. Del’s goal is
to be serving drinks by the end of April. ·
Lauri Paul gets to the heart of the matter with her all-ages book that
addresses gender stereotypes and biases in children's literature. Like
so many of us here, Lauri wears many hats. She is a yoga instructor,
an educator, and has worked in various fitness and outdoor adventure
qualified to write this tenderly persuasive and beautiful book. Always
simple, the book begins with basic day-to-day living and moves into
A NEW WINNING REAL-ESTATE PARTNERSHIP
There has never been a more exciting time to be a realtor on the Sunshine Coast.
The market is booming, and a new real-estate partnership is perfectly positioned
to take it on.
Sechelt’s John McKenzie, who last year was in the top one percent of realtors
within the Greater Vancouver Real Estate Board is partnering with Bronson Moore,
a younger experienced realtor on the Coast. The Royal LePage-Sussex duo believe
they are the right mix to excel in a different marketplace here. Unlike before, when
seniors were the dominant buyers, young, energetic entrepreneurs are coming to
purchase homes, work, and start new and exciting businesses. In recent months
they represent fifty percent of new buyers.
John says, “I bring experience to our real-estate team, and Bronson who comes
from a family of successful realtors is younger and licensed under the new
regulations. He also brings the social media skills that identify with our new young
families.” Together they have made some thirty sales since teaming up.
It is an exciting time for this new real-estate team, with many new people moving
to our Coast. ·
Nestled in the heart of Madeira Park, Ground Waves
West is open for business, and Erin and Bruce Hirst
are excited to be here.
Ground Waves originated in Perth, Ontario. The
big move out to the Sunshine Coast was triggered
after the fourth of their five children joined his
siblings and moved “out west” and decided he was
staying. "We hated to leave our daughter and grandkids who were
nearby in Toronto, but the call of the west and the great weather
and scenery was too much." So Erin and Bruce made the leap
across the country and settled in Pender Harbour. Erin said it was
“love at first sight” when she arrived on the Sunshine Coast.
Retirement? Ground Waves West is their retirement plan. While
Bruce is still very active with his other business, executive
coaching and consulting, they are running full steam ahead with
their second Ground Waves. “It’s important to do things that give
pleasure,” says Erin. They love people and are keen to be part of
the local community.
Ground Waves has always been about gathering unique finds and
local artists together in one store. Erin has an eye for beautiful
and useful products for home and gifting. The store’s motto comes
from a quote from Marianne Williamson—“Leave them feeling
good”—whether they buy anything or not.
The Madeira store will be filled with works of many artists from the
Coast, including local graphic designs from Wild Mountain Designs,
Wendie Milner’s natural body-care products and pieces by the Pink
Squirrel Sign Company.
GROUND WAVES
The kids’ area will be decorated with an underwater theme and filled with
“grandma-friendly toys.” You will find cars, your next best furry friend, funky
retro toys made by Schilling, Jelly Cat animals, and Lottie dolls, to name a
few treasures waiting to be discovered. Bruce even does magic for the kids.
Giving back is an important part of the Hirsts’ overall business structure.
They are devoted to supporting early childhood education through our local
Learning Centre in Madeira Park. They also support an elephant sanctuary
in Thailand, where their line of beautiful, delicate jewelry originates.
They have a wonderful sales team and have so much fun working together.
As a family business, all their children have helped in sourcing products
and their daughter Megan runs the back office with Bruce. As Erin says,
“More hands make for light work.” She embraces a management style that
nurtures the best in people.
Erin and Bruce have received positive support from the community and are
looking forward to meeting everyone. They are currently open Tuesday to
Saturday, 10 am–4 pm. Head on over to Ground Waves West and welcome
new friends to Madeira Park. ·
the sunshine coast magazine
SPRING HAS ALREADY LIGHTENED UP
OUR LIVES WITH LONGER HOURS OF
DAYLIGHT, LESS RAIN, AND TRADING
IN THE WINTER COAT FOR A WARM
SWEATER OR LIGHT JACKET. THE GREENS
LOOK BRIGHTER, THE BLUES BLUER.
TAKE ADVANTAGE OF SPRING, UNCOVER
FROM YOUR WINTER RITUALS, AND
START LIGHTENING UP YOUR DAYS.
SPRING OCCURS BUT ONCE A YEAR.
FIDDLE HEADS - FOR A LIMITED TIME ONLY
If you want to taste the new growth of spring,
fiddleheads are your thing. These tightly curled fern
fronds are available for only a short time. Their
flavour profile touches on grassy and fresh with a
hint of nuttiness similar to that of asparagus.
Chock-full of Vitamins A and C, fiddleheads are a
nutritional powerhouse rich in antioxidants and a
great source of fibre and omega-3 fatty acids.
Give them a good wash and trim any woody ends. Boil in
a pot of lightly salted water for about 5 minutes. Drain. Toss with
lemon juice, olive oil, capers, and salt, and roast at 450º F for 8–12
minutes or until slightly toasted. These are so good you will want to
eat them straight from the roasting pan.
COCKTAIL HOUR
We are told we should be drinking more water each
day. But water can be . . . boring. Not anymore.
Flavoured water adds just enough taste to make
you crave drinking your H2O. Add cucumber and
mint to your filtered water for a refreshing drink
throughout the day. Other great options are lemon
and mint, orange slices, melon, or your favourite fruit
and herb combination.
These vibrant, fresh combinations of fruits, vegetables,
and herbs don’t have to stop at water. Cocktail hour could use a
freshening up as well. Whether you enjoy your cocktail with or
without alcohol is up to you. Either way, it’s time for a change. Get
inspired by all the great craft alcohols and fresh ingredients to
elevate your glass.
Peeled cucumber and mint roughly muddled together, lime,
sweetener of choice, your favourite gin, ice—shake and strain. This
is also fantastic with celery juice. Substitute soda water for the
alcohol if you don’t imbibe.
LIGHTEN UP
Stews, roasts with mashed potatoes, and creamy soups are warm
and satisfy our need to hunker down in winter. Spring is the time to
bring back lighter fare.
How about chicken broth with peas, asparagus, and bok choy? You
can freshen up your roasted asparagus with lemon and mint.
If you are still craving a rich, epicurean delight, look no further than
a pot of creamy fiddlehead soup. Spring taste, winter comfort.
FRESH DESSERTS
While cakes, brownies, and apple pie will always have a place at the
table, spring is time to grab some freshly cut rhubarb and a pint of
strawberries and whip up a quick and easy crisp. It’s just as easy
to make for one as it is for a party (we’ll get there again). A quick
and simple rhubarb galette or the bright, fresh taste of a
lemon-blueberry pound cake are all fresh ways to spring
forward your desserts.
FARMER’S MARKETS - COMING SOON!
Are you excited to go to Sechelt on Saturday
mornings and see what the farmers have grown
for you? They have been hard at work planting and
tending to their young fruits and vegetables with the
sole purpose of providing us with the most delicious,
healthy, and fresh foods. The market will open on April 3.
While Covid restrictions allow only food producers, we hope to
see our other favourite artisans back later in the summer.
SPRING CLEAN
Time for a warm-weather refresh. Whether you need a good
top-to-bottom spring clean or just a reshuffling from
winter to spring, take this time to open the windows
and let the fresh air swirl through the house. Search
out environmentally friendly cleaning products or
make your own. A simple all-purpose cleaner recipe:
soak orange peels in white vinegar for two weeks,
strain, remove the peels, add a 1:1 ratio of orangevinegar
to water in a spray bottle and clean up.
WELLBEING
We’ve had a lot of rainy days to keep us inside by the fire,
but daylight is getting longer. We don’t have to grab our reflective
jacket to go for a walk at 4:00 pm anymore. It’s warmer and drier,
and there is plenty of social distancing on a walk.
With the gardening centres coming out of hibernation, we can
grab early-blooming plants and start dressing up our flower pots
and cleaning up our garden, amending the soil, ordering seeds,
and preparing our gardens for the hard-working, fruitful summer
season ahead.
Spring has sprung. Let’s move from binge-watching to binge-doing!
When Ann Harmer learned quite by chance that fungi can be used to dye fibre, she discovered
a passion she couldn’t ignore. Foraging in her own forest backyard led to wider explorations of
the temperate rainforest in the area she calls home: the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia.
In this book, Ann punctuates her detailed instructions about mushroom dyeing with
anecdotes that reveal her dry sense of humour. Learn about this art form and join her in a few
giggles as she shares the triumphs and pitfalls of her quest to produce magic in the dyepot.
hat's right. We're here, where everyone wishes they lived. We have space
THE NEW OCEANSIDE RESORT & SPA AND THE PORCH RESTAURANT
PROMISE A NEW WAY TO EXPERIENCE THE UNIQUE ATTRACTION OF DAVIS BAY
WORDS | BRIAN COXFORD
"
hen I turned the corner on the drive into Davis
Bay and the ocean opened up in front of me, it
was an incredible feeling. The location and view
are spectacular and out of this world.” Those were
the thoughts and a motivating factor that helped
convince Shakil Adam and his partner at the
Evergreen Hotel Group to purchase the Bella Beach Inn and property in
Sechelt. Their new name for the hotel is Oceanside Resort and Spa.
With a total investment of just over $10 million, it’s a huge shot in the
arm for Davis Bay and the Sechelt economy. The transaction includes
the purchase of the Bella Beach Inn and property, the Blue Sky Motel
next door, a restaurant, all the upgrades, renovations, new furniture,
and landscaping.
The opportunity to buy the property first came to light at the beginning
of Covid last year. Bella Beach Inn had sat virtually empty for over a
year. Evergreen had a ninety-day window to move on the deal; all things
considered, the company president says they could not pass it up.
“You are never going to have another opportunity to buy 800 feet of
waterfront like this.” Evergreen owns twelve other successful hotels in
Metro Vancouver and on Vancouver Island, but believes the Davis Bay
site is by far its best.
The new 140-seat restaurant at Oceanside is The Porch. It is aptly named
because patrons will be able to dine and sip a glass of wine both on
the deck and inside, taking in what might be the best restaurant ocean
view in Canada. The Porch owner and Evergreen’s restaurant partner is
John-Paul Lamb, a chef and successful restaurateur with thirty years
of experience.
He was on the management team of the busy and popular Joe Fortes
Seafood House in Vancouver, managed properties for the Glowbal Group
Restaurant Chain and most recently was a Hotel Director with Celebrity
Cruises on their flagship vessel the Celebrity Edge. Lamb has hired
veteran Red Chef Murray Flaherty from Glowbal’s Coast Restaurant.
48

the sunshine coast magazine
ARCHITECTURAL RENDERINGS COURTESY OF OCEANSIDE RESORT & SPA
a landmark reborn
Together they have put together an extensive menu with many glutenfree
items. Lamb says they hope to satisfy almost every palate. “We
will serve baked oysters, maple salmon, and pizza from our forno oven.
Burgers, ribs, and chicken, and many other dishes are on our menu. Our
food and beverage prices will be fair and competitive.” Inside patrons
can sit at the bar, in front of the forno oven, or gather in a group at one
of the tables. The beer, cider, and wine are from the Sunshine Coast
and BC.
John-Paul also believes they have chosen the perfect spot. “It is a
dream come true to live and stay and own a restaurant in such an
iconic location.”
The restaurant and the hotel with its thirty-two studios and one- and
two-bedroom suites are both open. Renovations are under way at the
Blue Sky Motel portion of the property next door. It will add eleven villas
to the resort where guests can drive up to their front doors.
A spa is also planned with a local operator in a large 2,000-square-foot
studio above the restaurant. Evergreen is hiring local landscapers to
enhance and beautify the resort’s waterfront corridor and draw the two
properties at Oceanside Resort and Spa together.
As new owners, Evergreen is very sensitive to the wishes and
expectations of their new neighbours. “We don’t want to be the experts.
We want to work with people in the area. We understand how important
Davis Bay is to them, and we want to build something they respect and
welcome. We also want to promote the area, its unique culture, the
hiking, its natural surroundings, and all the Sunshine Coast has to offer.”
The yellow paint that covered the old hotel, an eyesore to many, has
been replaced with a modern, clean West Coast look.
Three of the smaller yellow walls remain. The new owners want to hear
from the community and its artists to get ideas of how the walls can
be transformed in a unique way, not only to enhance the look of the
Oceanside Resort but to be in harmony with the Sunshine Coast and the
spectacular natural beauty of Davis Bay. ·
