Residents call for input into
potential rezoning plans
• By Susan Sandys
RESIDENTS ON the outskirts
of west Rolleston want to be
included in potential rezoning
plans as the town boundary
extends by thousands of homes.
The residents, on Dunns Crossing
Rd between Burnham School
Rd and Brookside Rd, say they
will be “landlocked” on large
sections as higher density subdivisions
take place around them.
But the district council says the
landowners can not be part of
rezoning plan change applications
submitted by others, and they
would have to submit their own
application.
“That’s just archaic; it is old prehistoric
thinking,” resident Gary
Smith said.
“Why are they land-locking
perfectly good sub-dividable land
in-between two high density subdivisions?”
Smith said.
He was not ruling out applying
for his own plan change in future,
however, this would be likely to
cost tens of thousands of dollars.
He believed the council should instead
consider the common sense
approach of rezoning the area as
part of considering a recentlynotified
plan change application
from Rolleston West Residential
Ltd, a Carter Group company.
sandwiched by higher density subdivisions if they are not able to subdivide.
GARY SMITH and his
neighbours are worried
about being landlocked.
As we have reported in
recent weeks, Selwyn is exploding
with higher density
subdivisions.
Rolleston is quickly creeping
closer to Lincoln, Lincoln
is heading in the direction of
Tai Tapu and Springston.
Now residents on Dunns
Crossing Rd between
Burnham School Rd and
Brookside Rd, fear they will
be “landlocked” on large sections
as higher density subdivisions
take place around
them.
The district council says
the landowners can not be
part of rezoning plan change
applications submitted by
other landowners – they
have to submit their own
application.
Smith says that thinking
is “archiac” and “prehistoric.”
It will also cost a lot
of money that is a major
problem.
Residents not fully aware of
district’s attractions – study
• By Susan Sandys
VERY FEW Selwyn residents are
aware that picturesque areas just
a stone’s throw away are part of
their own district.
Research Insights conducted
qualitative research in the form
of two focus groups from Selwyn
and one from Christchurch,
further to an online Canterbury
Tourism Study.
The study found that few
people in the focus groups could
identify areas that are included
in the district. When prompted,
just one per cent or less could
identify each area of Castle Hill,
Whitecliffs, Lake Coleridge and
Arthur’s Pass as being part of the
district.
That does not mean that residents
did not visit those areas,
just that they did not know they
are part of the district.
Researcher Judy Cormick said
in her report, which has been
submitted to the district council
for its meeting this week, that
respondents were interested in a
variety of experiences through
Selwyn natural attractions.
These included garden visits,
walks, hiking, rural experiences,
quiet areas, picnicking, biking,
local show, country day trips and
lakes.
When it came to exploring
the main centres in their own
backyard, Selwyn residents rated
highly.
Eight-three per cent of residents
in the Selwyn focus groups
liked to explore Rolleston, 62 per
cent Lincoln, 58 per cent West
Melton, 54 per cent Leeston, 12
per cent Darfield and six per cent
Kirwee.
The online survey had shown
that 41 per cent of Selwyn
residents spent time visiting
attractions in the district. The
focus group study showed these
as being attractions such as
community centres, libraries,
the aquatic centre, markets and
leisure activities. Fifty one per
cent of Selwyn residents felt connected
to the district and 36 per
cent would be interested in an
agricultural/rural experience.
“Selwyn residents are significantly
more aware of the
recreations options available
and commented very positively
on the council’s commitment to
providing these,” Cormick said.
Selwyn residents felt there were
very good facilities in the district
in terms of shopping, recreation
and experiences in the region.
“There is a very low awareness
of the scope of the Selwyn
District with Christchurch residents,
however a desire to learn
LITTLE
KNOWN: Only
one per cent
residents are
Hill and other
picturesque
their district,
a study
more about what is available.
All residents in Christchurch
and Selwyn are looking for new
interesting places to go and new
experiences.”
There was a much higher
awareness of the Meet Us
in The Country promotions
with Selwyn residents than
Christchurch residents. Fortyeight
per cent of the Selwyn
residents in the focus groups
recalled the promotion.
“As outlined in the online
study, a high proportion of
people are looking for new areas
to visit and new experiences. The
main barrier to visiting seems to
be a lack of awareness of what is
available to them.”
“I will believe it when I see it,”
said O’Neill.
He first went to the council
last year to ask them to fix the
grass verge on Barley Mow,
which resembled a “dust bowl”
the contractor
responsible
for the work
had confirmed to the council it
would be returning in coming
weeks to fix the area.
“This work has been left until
autumn, as that is the best conditions
for growing grass and
“The contractor has done
the berms on this street since
it installed the fibre optic cable
O’Neill said the cable was
He said residents of some of
Firefighters issue
reminder to
check smoke alarms
• By Susan Sandys
A SMOKE alarm in a sleepout in
Darfield which caught fire did not
have batteries in it.
Darfield Volunteer Fire Brigade
deputy chief Ken Muscroft said
the fire had started from a pot
belly stove in the building, which
was a garage with sleepout.
The fire on Wednesday about
11pm followed a house fire in the
town where a working smoke
alarm helped the occupants
escape in time.
Muscroft said both incidents
were a reminder for people to
check their smoke alarms were operational
with working batteries.
He believed the couple of people
in the sleepout were alerted to
the fire by a noise in the garage.
It was lucky they had heard the
noise, as the smoke alarm did not
have a battery in it.
“It wasn’t a big deal, but it
could’ve been,” he said.
The fire was quickly extinguished
by firefighters. It caused
only minor damage in the garage.
Muscroft said residents in a
burning Darfield home were
able to get out in time after being
alerted by smoke alarms on the
afternoon of April 1.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand
Canterbury area commander
Dave Berry said the house fire
on Telegraph Rd left the building
severely damaged.
There was one adult and one
child home at the time of the fire,
the cause of which is still being
investigated.
Meanwhile, a Southbridge family
had just finished stacking their
firewood for winter, when it all
went up in smoke.
Southbridge Volunteer Fire
Brigade chief Shane King said the
family arrived home about 5pm,
Easter Sunday, to their rural property
near the town. They found
their woodshed and an older
model car parked nearby ablaze.
It had been just the day before
that they had stacked wood in
the shed. About four cord was
lost, the shed and car were also
destroyed.
“The relatively still conditions
meant the fire did not spread to
the home, about 20m away,’’ King
said.
“They were lucky that the
weather was on their side.”
The blaze is not deemed
suspicious.
Fellow Dunns Crossing
“It will be like two little
In the past, he had
Trash throwing
trio charged
THROWING RUBBISH out
the window, and then driving to
McDonald’s, proved the undoing
of a trio caught at Rolleston in a
stolen car.
Police received a traffic
complaint about rubbish being
thrown from the window of a car
travelling on State Highway 1 on
Sunday about 1pm.
Sergeant Alex Pickover said a
search of the registration number
revealed the car had previously
been reported stolen. It had been
stolen from Christchurch, either
late Saturday or early Sunday.
Police located the vehicle
on Kidman S, Rolleston, and
followed it as it pulled into
McDonald’s. By this time, there
were three police cars at the scene.
They were able to box the car in,
with two behind and one in front,
preventing the car from leaving
the McDonald’s car park.
Sergeant Pickover said the
three occupants, two of which
were aged in their late teens and
the other in their mid-20s, from
Christchurch, were arrested.
The driver was charged with
unlawfully taking a motor vehicle,
breach of bail, and driving while
disqualified. The two passengers
were each charged with
unlawfully getting into a motor
vehicle.
WEEDONS residents are
frustrated they have been
waiting almost a year for
someone to take responsibility
for a smashed brick wall on their
street.
Two double-brick walls are on
opposite sides of Justine Drive
where it starts from Berketts Rd,
but one of the walls has been lying
in ruins for 10 months.
Residents are relieved that
finally that the problem is to
be fixed – by Waka Kotahi NZ
Transport Agency and the district
council.
The walls were installed at
least 10 years ago when what is
now Justine Drive was a private
right of way. In 2018, as part of
the Christchurch Southern Motorway
Stage 2 (CSM2) project,
the right of way was extended
and became a pubic road called
Justine Drive.
As part of CSM2, contractors
employed by NZTA were
widening Berkett’s Rd last year
in June, when one of their diggers
allegedly hit the wall and
smashed a hole in it.
Justine Drive resident Dave
Bryce said he saw a digger
near the wall at the time of it
being smashed, with a group of
workers standing around the
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
area. He assumed the digger
had caused the damage. He
alerted the district council,
where staff informed him about
six weeks after the incident that
they had passed the matter onto
NZTA.
“We never heard anything
more about it. I think someone
should get in and just pull the
thing out,” Bryce said.
Fellow Justine Drive resident
Doug Middlemiss said he had
been pursuing the contractor to
rebuild the wall, however, they
had told him it was not a project
vehicle which had caused the
damage. They referred him to
the district council, where a staff
member told him they would be
talking to the contractor.
“It’s like dealing with naughty
children, you know one of them
did the damage, but you don’t
know which one did it,” Middlemiss
said.
An NZTA spokesperson said
the end of Justine Drive, where
the smashed entrance wall was
located, had not been part of its
CSM2 project.
“However, due to safety
concerns, we are currently
working with Selwyn District
Council over removal of the
walls at the Berketts Rd end,”
the spokesperson said.
“With funding agreed from
both SDC and Waka Kotahi,
they will be removed in the near
future as part of a separate package
of minor work across the
CSM2 project.”
Middlemiss said it was good
that finally the issue was being
resolved, however, he considered
the NZTA response was “a load
of bollocks.”
“If it was a safety issue, why
did they not remove it when
they widened the road?” Middlemiss
said.
“It’s taken nearly a year and a
phone call from Selwyn Times.”
ST JOHN wants to give away its
earthquake-damaged former
ambulance station at Darfield.
It is seeking a community
group or organisation to take
over ownership and restore the
building, which is listed as a
heritage building in the district
council’s proposed District Plan.
The former station, at the corner
of Currie St and North Tce,
has been closed for 10 years, following
the earthquakes. St John
now operates from a new station
in Bray St, which it built after the
earthquakes through insurance
proceeds and fundraising.
The former ambulance station
was built in 1912 and is located
on a reserve that was gazetted
to the St John Ambulance
Association in 1969 for use as
ambulance headquarters.
St John Selwyn area committee
chairwoman Ann Shepherd
said earthquake damage to the
building was substantial, and it
needed extensive repairs.
“St John is not in a position to
afford such renovation work. Its
requirements have changed, and it
needs to divest itself of this building
and land,” she said.
“It is looking to work with a
community-focused group or
individual, interested in taking
on a restoration project. As an
organisation we are happy to
discuss transferring ownership
of the building (free of charge) to
a group or individual.”
Interested community groups
or members of the community
can phone Shepherd on 318 4774
or 027 226 2936.
District council strategy and
policy team leader Robert Love
said the building was suggested
for inclusion in the proposed
District Plan by a member of the
public at a drop-in day in 2018.
This was following the council
asking the public for suggestions
of buildings that may merit
inclusion under the plan.
“It was included in the heritage
listings after a formal assessment
and with no objections from the
owner,” Love said.
Teens involved in
drink driving incidents
• By Susan Sandys
YOUTHS WERE responsible
for a series of spectacularly bad
drink driving incidents over
Easter Weekend.
On the eve of Good
Friday, an 18-year-old
allegedly crashed into a
Fire and Emergency New
Zealand Ford Ranger ute,
parked on the side of the
road at Darfield.
Area commander Dave
Berry said the ute, fully
marked up with FENZ
reflector signage, would
have been obvious to
motorists with their headlights
on. The ute, which was outside
the home of a FENZ employee,
received severe damage in the
crash.
Senior Sergeant Dean Harker
said the driver was located
nearby. He was processed for
drink driving.
Harker said the incident was
followed by another two on
Easter Saturday.
About 8.30pm an 18-year-old
allegedly crashed into two parked
vehicles in Rolleston before driving
from the scene. Ambulance
staff located him unconscious
behind the wheel, stationary at
traffic lights on Main South Rd.
They notified police who had
Wednesday April 14 2021 Selwyn Times
NEWS 9
been looking for the offender
after they had been alerted to the
crash. Police processed him for
drink driving.
Later that night, around
midnight, another 18-year-old
had fellow motorists
concerned as he drove
towards Rolleston without
a tyre on the wheel
of his car. The rim was
making contact with the
road.
Police received three
calls from concerned
motorists about the
car. One of the callers
followed the man until
he came to a stop on Larcombs
Rd.
Police went to the scene. They
noted the car’s air bags were deployed,
indicating it had crashed
into something. They processed
the driver for drink driving,
where the teen’s level was 895
micrograms of alcohol per litre of
breath.
“He didn’t really care about
what had happened, he just
wanted to get to a mate’s party in
Rolleston,” Harker said.
Harker said the behaviour
from youth was alarming.
“Obviously alcohol and young
drivers don’t mix. It’s a recipe for
disaster.”
Rolleston Community Centre
Selwyn Central Arts Council or Arts Heart as most of us know it, has been
around for over 20 years in the Selwyn area.
It was started with the goal of bringing Art into the then rural community. To
that end Arts Heart has been offering workshops, displays, shows, programmes
and exhibitions locally and we are about to hold our 19th Annual Art Exhibition.
ALL ARTISTS are welcome to enter and we have had an eight year old and an
87 year old exhibitor, first time exhibitors, emerging, and practicing artists, we
encourage everyone. Paint, wood, cotton, stone, paper, using a camera, a brush,
a chisel, a needle, tin snips or plastic - all forms of creativity are welcomed into
this iconic exhibition.
Many of the now well known and respected artists in this region first
exhibited with Arts Heart. Our committee is caring, our fees minimal,
our experience vast and our desire to showcase the talent in this area is
extreme.
One such artist is West Melton resident LARA POMROY.
Lara was encouraged to enter the first exhibition by Margaret McFedries a
foundation committee member. Lara had never shown her work and was
unsure but eventually did enter and that year 2005, her Waka painting
was purchased by the Selwyn District Council and is still on display in the
Rolleston Community Centre. Lara Pomroy has never looked back and
has been a regular exhibitor. She is now encouraging her students at the
ARTWEST Studio in West Melton to enter. Lara believes that with a set of
skills, a set of tools and a teacher everyone can find that elusive valuable
goal of creativity Lara runs art tutorials and classes for beginners and
emerging artists at her local studio called ARTWEST. Lara’s attitude is
everyone can learn to paint and that art is a therapy, a challenge and a joy.
Reader Martin Towers of
Lincoln responds to zoning plan
changes potentially earmarked
for the district
I have already lodged an objection
to 950 new homes in Rolleston on the
grounds that the infrastructure does not
exist to support them.
By infrastructure, I mean that 950
houses means that 950 people, probably
more will set off to work in the morning
and the first question is where?
Rolleston is primarily a residential
area, so most will set off towards town.
How will they travel and what route
will they take? Imagine an extra 950
cars joining the queue at Brougham St.
Or will they take Shands Rd through
the everlasting roadworks to Hornby?
Above all, this is our widely-shared
desire to reduce carbon emissions and
from that point of view living a long
way from work is undesirable.
That brings into question the planning
of the city and surrounding
areas. New developments in Rolleston,
Lincoln, Pegasus Kaiapoi all depend on
the long commute being acceptable and
expandable.
So more road improvements, more
motorways and increased consumption
fuel, cars and tyres.
The 950 houses that I found alarming
has now jumped to 6500. This indicates
an alarming lack of co-ordination
between city and Selwyn planners.
It was the biggest ever exhibition to date at the at the seventh biennial Easter Art Weekend
at Castle Hill, with work from 45 artists on display. The main exhibition at the village hall was
complemented with workshops and artworks on offer throughout the area over the weekend.
The Great Easter Egg Hunt captured the imaginations of children, who set off eagerly from the
start line. Workshops included hand lettering embroidery, stone painting and zentangle. Castle
Hill Creative’s organisers were grateful to the district council’s Creative Communities for supporting
the event, which was postponed from last year.
PREBBLETON snatched an
opening round cliffhanger
over Methven in the Luisetti
Seeds Combined Division One
rugby competition with a lastgasp
penalty also regaining
the Busch-Lemon Shield on
Saturday.
Methven looked on track
to leave Prebbleton with four
points and the trophy contested
between the two clubs
when Tait Chisman crossed
out wide and Reuben Early
slotted a tricky conversion to
give the visitors a 22-20 lead
on the brink of full-time.
However, Prebbleton efficiently
worked their way
down the field from the restart
and when a Methven defender
was penalised for a no-arms
tackle, Lachie Stove slotted the
match-winner from in front of
the posts from 20-odd metres,
albeit into a stiff breeze.
“They scored in the corner
with a minute to go in regular
time and their guy converted,”
said Prebbleton coach Dave
Kettle.
“Then we managed to work
our way down the field and got
a penalty pretty adjacent to the
posts in the 81st minute. We
just got a lucky break, it could
have gone either way.”
Prebbleton now have a second
round bye while Methven
seek to bounce back against
pool B leaders Lincoln.
Champions Southbridge,
who also have a bye this weekend,
opened their campaign in
pool A with a 31-12 win over
Hampstead but last year’s runners-up
Waihora were edged
21-18 by Southern in pool B.
There is a new competition
format this season with three
pools comprising North Canterbury
clubs on their own,
while two other two groupings
feature teams from Ellesmere
and Mid Canterbury.
The top three teams from the
combined pools advance to the
BACKYARD CRITTERS
Mike Bowie is an ecologist who specialises in entomology
(insects and other invertebrates). Each week he introduces a
new species found in his backyard at Lincoln. His column aims
to raise public awareness of biodiversity, the variety of living
things around us. Check out the full list of invertebrates found
New bee on the
block a bit of a bully
THERE’S A NEW a new
bee on the block and it’s a
bully.
This aggressor is called
the wool carder bee
(Anthidium manicatum)
and is a native of Europe,
Asia and North America.
In New Zealand the
species was first observed in
Nelson and Napier in 2006.
The bees resemble the
exotic Vespula wasp with
their black and yellow
stripes and probably gain
a little respect through this
mimicry behaviour.
Males are slightly larger
in size than females being
14-17mm and 11-13mm
respectively.
The species gets its name
from its behaviour of scrapping
hair from leaves that it
uses to build its nest.
The bee is a solitary species
that nests in pre-existing
holes or cracks.
In mid-March, when the
species is most commonly
observed in New Zealand,
I found a specimen nesting
in the screw hole of a hose
reel.
Nests consist of a woolly
ball of leaf hairs, pollen,
nectar, and a solitary egg.
Male wool carder
bees are very territorial
and aggressively defend
floral resources against
other flower visitors and
particularly males of the
same species.
Females foraging these
defended areas mate with
the male ‘owners’ of the
floral resources.
Services
This way…
Our map for the next 10 years
Over the next few weeks we'll be highlighting eight big decisions we
need your help with as part of the Long-Term Plan consultation.
This week: drinking water and the future of the new Prebbleton
Community Centre.
BIG DECISION 1
Join your local Anzac Day commemoration service on Sunday 25 April and remember the sacrifices of
our servicemen and women. Services are organised by local Returned and Services Associations.
Keeping our drinking water safe (2021–2031)
We’re responsible for providing a safe and reliable drinking water
supply, through 27 water supplies which service close to 80%
of residential properties in Selwyn – around 20,000 households.
To meet community expectations and national drinking water
standards, we must ensure that all Council supplies are treated to
the required safe level.
OUR PREFERRED OPTION
Continue our current approach to maintaining safe drinking
water supplies.
We will only chlorinate remaining non-chlorinated water supplies
if our risk assessment or regulation require us to do so. We would
maintain the current infrastructure to ensure that water supplies
meet national water quality standards. However, as standards and
requirements change, we cannot commit to increased spending to
remain chlorine-free.
Cost
Around $1 million in 2021/22
Impact on rates
Around 1% increase in water rates, or about $4 a year for an
average residential property.
OTHER OPTION
Upgrade some supplies so that they can
avoid chlorination.
This means we would need to improve some of our water
infrastructure to meet water quality standards without relying on
chlorine treatment. Costs, impact on rates and impact on debt
would all be higher. Cost would be around $30 million, with a 20%
increase in water rates (about $100 a year).
BIG DECISION 6
Future of the new Prebbleton Community Centre
(2025/26)
A new Prebbleton Community Centre was proposed in the Long-Term
Plan 2018–2028. To allow time to understand the exact needs and
the best site, we’re proposing to build the new community centre in
2025/26. Initial assessment indicates that a flexible facility, which can
cater for a variety of uses and age groups, is needed.
OUR PREFERRED OPTION
All change for changing at the
Selwyn Aquatic Centre
New changing rooms will be available in coming weeks at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre as the extension
moves towards completion.
The majority of the existing changing rooms will be reopened by 4 May. These include the two accessible
changing rooms, three family changing rooms and the male changing rooms all due to reopen.
In addition five new family changing rooms and a new family accessible changing room will be opened,
along with new smaller male and female overflow changing rooms next to the aquatic centre extension.
The existing female changing rooms are still undergoing maintenance work and are expected to be ready
to reopen in early June. The portacom changing rooms that are currently in place will remain as long as
required and people are encouraged to seek advice from staff on the day for the best option for changing.
The new 10-lane, 25-metre pool and new increased foyer, retail area and multi-use rooms will open in
early June.
On the Roads
Repairs are taking place on the Waimakariri Gorge Bridge. Pavement repairs are taking place on
The Lake Road between Harts Road and Tramway Reserve Road and on Brookside Road between
Burnham School Road and East Maddisons Road. Traffic management is in place for these works.
Construct a new community centre.
This proposed centre would be a multi-purpose facility, suitable for
many different types of functions, and for a range of users and ages.
It would also include some specialised spaces.
Cost
$6.3 million
Impact on rates
$12 per year (already provided for within the Community Centres
Targeted Rate).
OTHER OPTION Defer the project to outside the 10-year plan.
This option would have no impact on rates or debt, and the
Community Centres Targeted Rate would reduce by $12 per year.
Help keep our drains flowing
With autumn here and wind and rain on the way, drains can quickly
become blocked with leaves. You can help avoid flooding around
your property and street by removing any leaves that are clogging
drains. Council contractors do regularly clear drains, but leaves can
quickly build up especially in windy conditions at autumn time. So
build a leaf pile for the children, make mulch for the garden or just
enjoy some time out in the fresh air helping out your street.
Saute in butter until softened.
Add garlic, root ginger, ground
spices, salt and pepper. Stir in
lentils, tomatoes, stock and
lamb.
Cover and simmer for 60min,
until lamb is tender. Stir in
carefully.
Mushroom and merlot
soup
– Serves 6-8
Ingredients
100gm butter
1 medium brown onion, diced
2 large cloves garlic, crushed
500gm portobello mushrooms,
sliced
¼ tsp each: chopped rosemary
leaves, thyme leaves
Flaky sea salt and freshly
ground black pepper to taste
1 cup good merlot wine
4 cups chicken or vegetable
stock
7 tbsp flour
2 cups milk
Directions
Mulligatawny
lamb with a
side of rice.
Mushroom
soup is always
a popular
starter.
Melt half the butter in a large,
heavy saucepan. Add onion,
garlic, mushrooms, herbs and
seasonings.
Cook on low heat for about
20min. Add wine and simmer
for 15min, until liquid is reduced
by half. Add stock. Simmer for
15min, until reduced by onethird.
Meanwhile, make a roux by
melting remaining butter in a
small saucepan. Stir in flour
until well incorporated, but not
brown.
Gradually whisk in milk.
Simmer, stirring constantly, for
about 5min until thickened.
Remove a few slices of mushroom
from soup mixture. Place
aside for garnishing.
Using a hand-held blender, puree
soup mixture until smooth.
Whisk in roux.
Simmer, stirring occasionally,
for about 5mins. Garnish top of
each serving with reserved sliced
mushrooms.
The top can also be dotted
with equal amounts of olive oil
and balsamic vinegar.
This complements the richness
of the soup.
Celebrating Kirkwood
House Captains for 2021
Year 7 Camp
Our Year 7 pupils have recently
attended a camp at Purau Bay.
This is a great way for the children
to get to know each other.
Swimming in the
ocean on the first day of
camp and picking up rubbish
in Governors Bay, for left over
chocolates, was my favourite part
of camp.
I learnt that Rippa Island existed,
and I learnt the island’s past uses.
I also learnt a lot more about
the Māori culture in and
around Ripapa.
From the left: Blake, Indianna, Varley, Connor, James, Marcella, Niamh
and Oscar
House Captains for Mansfield/Hillary
Varley C - Ex Springston School
The things I like about Kirkwood Intermediate School are swimming and
technology. This year I would like to inspire other students and take on new
opportunities. The reason I wanted to be a House Captain was to gain more
confidence in speaking to others and to try new things.
James B - Ex Springston School
I like Kirkwood Intermediate School for the sport opportunities that it offers.
This year I would like to be the best sports boy. The reason for wanting to
become a House Captain is that it will test and improve my leadership skills.
My favourite part of camp
was the abseiling because
it was fun basically walking
down a cliff.
On camp we learnt how to
turn the canoe.
House Captains for Sheppard/Freyberg
Marcella C - Ex Lincoln Primary School
I like Kirkwood Intermediate School for the opportunities that the school has
to offer, for example, extension opportunities and the sports options. This
year I would like to run fundraisers to improve the image and enjoyment of
school. I wanted to be a House Captain to gain more confidence in myself
and to make a difference by sharing my opinions.
Connor C - Ex Hoon Hay School
Kirkwood Intermediate School gives you many opportunities to try new
things. This year I would like to make Kirkwood Intermediate School a better
place. I wanted to become a House Captain so I could help people and it
gives me a good chance of trying something new.
House Captains for Britten/Te Kanawa
Indianna M - Ex Clearview Primary
One of the things I like about Kirkwood is the old fashion feel, I also love
that all the students get many opportunities offered to them. This year my
goal was to become a House Captain and now that I have achieved that my
new goal is to be a great leader so all of the students will have a great year.
The reason for becoming a House Captain is because it would boost my
confidence, encourage me to become a better person and be a good role
model for others.
Abseiling was my favourite
part of camp because it was
fun, challenging and a new
experience. I thought that I
wouldn’t go the whole way
down but I did!
My favourite part of
Purau Bay Camp was when
we played ‘Kick the Can’. It was
really funny watching people run
in other people’s clothes and the
seeker was so confused.
I learnt how to canoe, put on
the abseiling harness and
how to wash dishes.
Blake N - Ex Dunsandel Primary School
I like the range of subjects available at Kirkwood Intermediate School. This
year as a House Captain I want to make the school a better place. I would
like to help people and do my best to make a difference to the school.
House Captains for Rutherford/Batten
Niamh L - Ex Burnham Primary School
I enjoy Kirkwood Intermediate as there are many opportunities you can
take part in, for example, EPro8 (Inter-school Science and Engineering
Competition), Science badges and much more. I would like to organise
more fun days and sports days so this year can be memorable. I wanted to
become a House Captain to gain more confidence and improve my public
speaking. I am also a great leader.
Oscar M - Ex South Hornby
The part I like about Kirkwood Intermediate is that it is bigger than my
previous school and it has great staff. This year I want to make it a happier
place and make it exciting for those new to Kirkwood, especially those who
are quieter. I have not taken on many opportunities in the past. The teacher
I had last year said I would make a good leader so I thought I would take on
this opportunity.
Bright spot in Mitsubishi’s SUV range
I WAS PICKING up Mitsubishi’s
new Eclipse Cross from the
dealership and entered into
conversation with one of the
members from the friendly sales
team.
After being shown around the
car, I mentioned that it seemed
too soon for the mid-size sport
utility vehicle to undergo a generation
change. In reply I was told
the old model had been around
for three years and, although time
has obviously escaped me, that is
indeed correct.
To say the Eclipse Cross is
all new isn’t strictly so, there
are many elements that are
carryovers, yet the popular SUV
has had some dramatic changes
that enhance its usability and
driveability. For one, it’s bigger –
14cm longer in fact – and most of
that has gone into the rear of the
model, increasing load and rear
passenger space.
While the engine hasn’t been
altered in design, there have
been improvements to make it
quieter and more responsive. It
also drives out of a new all-corner
power proportioning system.
Well, it’s not new either, but
it is new to Eclipse Cross, see
it’s much the same system that
Mitsubishi has used in its Lancer
Evolution models and the old V6-
powered Outlander.
The Super All Wheel Control
system is advanced and can be
seen largely as a safety system,
ROOMY: The new Eclipse Cross is longer than the previous
model, most of the length has gone into the rear section.
MITSUBISHI ECLIPSE CROSS: Generation change for 2021.
it also has modes for snow and
gravel that can be selected at will
by the driver.
Of course, not all Eclipse Cross
variants have four-wheel-drive, the
four-model range starts at $35,990
for a front-drive only model,
there’s also a high-spec VRX frontdriver
at $41,990. The four-wheeldrive
range starts at $37,990 for
the XLS, the evaluation car was
the high spec VRX at $43,990, and
it is chock full of goodies.
Items such as leather trim
(heated seats front and rear),
head-up display, dual-zone climate
control, active cruise control with
speed limiter, keyless entry and ignition,
electric sunroof (dual) and
paddle-shift eight-step automatic
transmission are all fitted.
It’s fair to say the controls have
all been simplified as well, gone is
the old centre console mouse-like
device, the new Eclipse Cross has
a touch screen display which has
large icons for easy understanding
and operation.
Now at 4.5m the Eclipse Cross
has a spacious in-cabin environment;
the seats are beautifully
supportive and comfortable,
while rear seat head and leg room
is appropriate, the latter not
compromised by that healthy rear
load space area – up to 405-litres
of storage can be contained there,
stretching to 672-litres with the
rear seats folded. Bear in mind,
though, it is a five-seater only.
At the other end sits a turbocharged
four-cylinder engine of
1499cc. If you are thinking that it
would be underwhelming, you’ll
be largely surprised, and take
into account that’s the direction
Honda has gone with its CRV,
the capacity and outputs are very
similar.
The Eclipse Cross’ unit is stateof-the-art
in terms of design, and
it has healthy figures to support
that statement. Mitsubishi claims
112kW and 254Nm power outputs,
the latter realised flat across the
torque curve spreading from
2000rpm to 3500rpm. If you add
in its pairing to a continuously
variable automatic transmission,
then the ingredients are in place for
a smooth transition of power and
responsive throttle application.
Drive through the CVT is
seamless, that’s an area Mitsubishi
has long persevered with, and
that background has certainly
helped with its application mated
to a turbocharged engine, the
result is a free-flowing spread of
power, and good economy and
performance figures.
The Eclipse Cross is rated with
a combined cycle average of
7.7-litre per 100km. On a long
high-country journey I had no
problem meeting Mitsubishi’s
fuel usage claim with the readout
constantly listing at 8.2l/100km,
• Price – Mitsubishi Eclipse
Cross VRX, $43,990
• Dimensions – Length,
4545mm; width, 1805mm;
height, 1685mm
• Configuration – Fourcylinder,
four-wheel-drive,
1499cc, 112kW, 254Nm,
continuously variable
• Performance –
0-100km/h, 9sec
• Fuel usage – 7.7l/100km
the engine loping over very relaxed
at just 1800rpm.
In terms of acceleration, the
Eclipse Cross will cut out a standstill
to 100km/h time of 9sec, and
it will power through a highway
overtake (80-120km/h) in 6.8sec,
using the paddle shifters to keep
the engine singing happily in its
peak power zone. These are all
impressive figures which would
make a buyer quite happy with
his/her purchase.
The Eclipse Cross is also rather
tidy when it comes to tackling a
tricky corner or two. I took the
evaluation car through the hilly
back roads beneath the Malvern
Hills between Sheffield and
Coalgate, those roads are partly
unsealed and I was keen to get the
feel of the SWAC system working
beneath. However, what happens
when grip is low is that all the
unseen elements kick in and the
driver is quite oblivious as to how
that system is working for you.
On seal the Eclipse Cross has
purposeful steering, the weighting
is near perfect and there is
solid communication as to how
the rubber is reacting to the road
surface. The tyres are a Toyo
brand (225/55 x 18in) and they
send strong messages through the
steering system so that the driver
is fully aware of how the entire
car is reacting under cornering
pressure. Body movement is low
and suspension control is high.
It must also be said the Eclipse
Cross moves through the air
quietly, the ride is controlled,
generating a level of comfort not
often found in a mainstream,
cost-friendly SUV.
Mitsubishi are well pleased
with their performance over the
last year or two. They have a vast
product range that hasn’t been
overly affected by supply issues
due to Covid-19.
What’s more, another high-profile,
new-generation model is due
soon – the Outlander. It and the
Eclipse Cross will dovetail nicely
in the marketplace, while sales of
the evergreen ASX continue to
tick over.
Any Mitsubishi buyer will be
pleased with the purchase, the
product is affordable and high
in quality. There is also peace of
mind, the Eclipse Cross gets a 10-
year driveline warranty.
AUTUMN HAS rolled in
bringing shorter days with a
definite chill in the air.
Leaves will start to turn as we
embark on a busy month in the
garden.
A very ‘fruitful’ time in the
garden with late harvest of
numerous vegetables such as
jerusalem artichokes, beans,
beetroot, carrots, corn, cucumber,
kumara, leeks, lettuce,
onion, potatoes, pumpkin,
radishes, silverbeet, spinach
and tomatoes.
If you haven’t prepared your
winter vegetable garden now,
then get started. Include plenty
of compost and fertiliser.
If possible, raise the earth
to be planted to ensure winter
veges do not become water
logged over wet winter
months.
Winter veges to plant in April
include broad beans, carrots,
cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower,
lettuce, onions, peas, radish,
spinach, swedes and turnips.
In the flower garden, your
summer annuals will be winding
down. Continue to deadhead
plants where you want to
prolong displays.
Soil should be prepared for
new plantings in the same
fashion as the vegetable garden.
Plan your winter flowering
garden carefully to achieve longevity
of blooms throughout
the season. Winter annuals to
plant in April include – Alyssum,
calendulas, cornflower,
cinerarias, lobelia, nemesia,
pansies, snapdragons, stock,
sweet william and violas.
April and May are the main
months for planting new strawberry
plants. Strawberries crop
freely on one and sometimes
two-year-old plants, and then
they should be removed.
Strawberries grow best in
fertile soils, and beds should be
raised to ensure good drainage.
Space new plants 150-
200mm apart, on mounds up
to 200mm above the existing
ground level.
Autumn is the time to lift
and divide any perennials
where overcrowding has occurred.
This involves trimming
any old growth back to ground
level, digging up, dividing and
then replanting where required.
Not all perennials require this
treatment and therefore can
remain undisturbed for many
years.
Replant containers with salad
vegetables, herbs or flowering
winter annuals and move them
into a position that is warmer
and sunnier during the winter
months.
THE GARDEN has gone
GARDENING 31
Tree and hedge
trimming: Check
around the house for trees
or hedges that are getting
close to walls, gutters or
the roof. Look for old
branches that may be
vulnerable to the first big
storms, book an arbourist
to trim and shape big
trees. It is too early to start
pruning but dead head
flowering shrubs, pick
fruit that is past ripening,
start raking leaves. Trim
back plants that are
overhanging pathways,
doors or entrances as there
is nothing worse than wet
leaves in your face on a
dark winter’s night.
Get scrubbing:
This has hardly been the
summer for moss and
mould, but check and
scrub potential damp spots
that may get slippery in the
first rains. And scrub or
bleach the garden furniture
while there is still good
sunshine to dry it so it
won’t go mouldy in winter.
A time to plant: It is
far too early to plant fruit
trees or roses, even shrubs
prefer planting in winter.
But if you are itching to
get started, some citrus
trees suit autumn planting
and you can always start
ROUTINE: Get spring
bulbs in the ground
now and it’s also time
to trim hedges.
modifying your soil (or
clay) with composts and
loams ready for the new
inhabitants.
Bulbs: If you kick
yourself every August
or September when the
spring flowers come out
and you haven’t got any,
get planting. Daffodils,
freesias, jonquils,
anemones and ranunculas
can all go in now. Start
a few in pots to delight
friends whose birthdays
fall in spring.
HARDY: Leeks and broad beans will do will during winter.
Save money, grow your own food
KIWIS ARE increasingly
discovering the rewards of
growing their own food.
People seeking to save
money are choosing to
plant a vegetable garden
instead of buying vegetables
from the supermarket.
There are so many benefits
from growing your own
food. There’s the satisfaction
of successfully raising
plants from seed and then
harvesting and eating them.
Gardening is also good
exercise and many people
discover it’s a wonderful
way to unwind.
If you have never tried
growing plants from seed
before don’t be put off by
the fact we are entering
late autumn and winter as
there are seeds to be sown
right now. There are many
vegetables which will do
well in all environments
during winter – leeks, turnips,
broad beans, kale and
endive (or chicory).
Broad beans are enjoying
resurgence in favour and
are relatively easy to grow,
producing large ‘fat’ pods
containing three to five
green beans which are excellent
sautéed with garlic, a
lightly steamed vegetable or
even whipped into a tasty
dip.
Leeks are a large, upright,
non-bulbing type of onion
and can be used much as
onions are to flavour soups
and salads or cooked in a
cheese sauce.
Turnips were once as
popular as tomatoes and
their popularity probably
declined once the yearround
choice of vegetables
increased thanks to imports.
The trend to convenience
foods may also be a reason
as turnips are a key ingredient
of wholesome vegetable
soup.
Why not start your own
soup-making revival by
growing turnips for the
pot?
There’s an amazing
variety of chicory, many of
which are used in Mediterranean
salads or sautéed
dishes.
Their leaves can be
harvested individually as
the plants mature, or the
whole leafy ‘head’ cut for a
meal.
Top Tips!
with intelligro
Autumn is a great time to plant bulbs
like daffodils, tulips, and freesias. A
beautiful burst of Spring colour after
the long days of winter is welcomed in
any garden and lets us know that new
growth and warmer days are on the way.
The key to success is ensuring you have
prepared area you are planting in.
For garden beds mix in some Organic Compost
with the soil, and a touch of Blood and Bone for
an extra nutrient boost if you have poor soil.
If you choose to plant in pots or containers,
Patio Plus or All Purpose Potting Mix are the top
choices as they are packed with all the nutrients
to help with healthy growth and development.
There is still time
to get new lawns
started, and time to
repair any existing
ones.
to Covid Level 4 lockdown and was held in the October
holidays instead. The organizers wanted to return the 2021
Scarecrow Trail to the April holidays slot but were concerned
that the scarecrow makers may be reluctant to launch into
creative mode again so soon.
The request for expressions of interest was sent out and
the organisers decided that if there were 20 entries, half of
the usual number of 40, then it would go ahead. There was
an immediate response indicating renewed support from the
sponsors, Four Square Supermarket, Brinkley Resort, Jackson
Holmes, Philip Wareing and the Methven Community Board.
This was quickly followed by a flurry of entries from many
previous scarecrow creators and a number of enthusiastic
entries from newcomers.
Did entries reach the required 20 entries? They surely did
and entries were oversubscribed within days. The organizers
have had to limit the entries to 40 scarecrow locations to
make the Trail manageable for participants.
So it is all on for the April school holidays:
Theme: Children’s
Storybook Characters
Dates: Commencing Saturday April 17
and ending on Sunday May 2
Trail maps and Entry forms for $10 per group (cash only)
available from the iHub or Four Square Supermarket.
Proceeds from the sale of maps go to a local charity.
Put the dates in your calendars for the school holidays
in April and follow the Methven Scarecrow Trail
Facebook Page for updates.

Sheffield Pig Saddle Road
A solid asset
Located only minutes from Springfield Village, nearby
to ski-fields, lakes and mountains, this really is a
wonderful place for a weekend retreat or an adjunct to
an existing farming operation. Approximately
127.1026 hectares (more or less), with a great mix of
easier contoured lower paddocks, gullies suitable for
trees or regenerating natives and some higher tussock
country giving a great mix of altitude and aspect. This
property would be a great complement to a flat block
or a fantastic opportunity to own your own hunting
block - there is certainly plenty of future upside here.
What really counts?
You are in the market for a new
property. You may have visited show
confused, overwhelmed or swept away
with emotional factors like having
everything new, or extra features such as
the children to play indoors and for
television and entertainment units?
Should this be open plan or separated?
• Kitchen – What needs to be in your
kitchen? Is it a whim or something
that offers a practical solution to the
way you use your kitchen?
• Bedroom sizes – What are optimum
sizes? Smaller bedrooms may translate
to slightly lower building costs while
extra space can be useful.
• Garaging – A standard double garage
once two cars are parked there offers
little space for the toys. What toys
do you have and could they live with
the lawnmower in a garden shed, a
cheaper option to three car garaging?
• Size of land – Lifestyle properties offer
space for children, pets, hobbies, an
expansive garden and perhaps a homerun
business but they require work so
are not for everyone and a compact
section might be more sensible if a
tight budget or busy lifestyle.
• Bathrooms – Second bathrooms are
great in homes with teenagers and a
wet shower room is ideal for young
children. A bath might be fashionable
though is often not used and its
absence could mean a more spacious
bathroom.
• Laundry – Would a laundry in the
garage do the job?
• Storage – How much storage do you
need? Weigh up what can truly be
stored in the garage once vehicles are
in, a preference in winter. Garages
vary in size so check the size to ensure
your vehicles will fit. Look also at
where else the house offers storage
capacity such as in hall cupboards,
a large hot water cylinder cupboard,
wardrobes, walk-in robe, attic storage
trusses, as well as the potential for
hooks and shelving in the garage for
bikes, tools, garden equipment and
even kayaks.
• Off-street parking – How many
vehicles can be parked on the
driveway? Will this space be sufficient?
• Garden - Is there sufficient space
for your children to play or for
entertaining?
No slow down of district’s economy
Selwyn’S economy has continued
to grow in spite of the impacts of the
global pandemic.
The district remains one of the
best-performing economies in the country,
with the latest figures from economic
analysts Infometrics showing 1.7 per
cent growth last year, compared to a 2.6
per cent drop nationally.
This growth was
reflected in consumer
spending, which grew
solidly, up 2.1 per cent
in the year to December
2020. nationally, spending
fell by 3.2 per cent
over the same time.
Sam
Broughton
Unemployment in
Selwyn remained at
almost half the national
level, sitting at 2.6 per
cent at the end of the year compared to
4.6 per cent nationally.
The Infometrics figures show Selwyn’s
construction boom and the agriculture
and food processing industry were big
factors in the strength of the district’s
economy.
STRENGTH:
Rolleston is a
thriving hub
of Selwyn,
where
economic
growth
continues
in the
worldwide
pandemic.
GEOFF
SLOAN
The number of houses sold
in Selwyn last year was up
by 31.2 per cent, while the
Infometrics figures show 34
per cent more residential
building consent applications
were filed with the
district council.
In 2020 the district council issued
consents for 1530 individual houses and
has continued receiving record numbers
of building consent applications in the
early months of 2021.
Almost a quarter (23.2 per cent) of
people employed in Selwyn work in
agriculture and food processing, where
returns have been steady and are likely
to increase in the coming year with a
higher dairy payout.
The Infometrics figures underscore
the region’s decade of strong growth –
with Selwyn seeing the second largest
economic growth of any district in the
country over the past 10 years.
mayor Sam Broughton said it had
been good to see the economy and
community remaining strong over the
pandemic.
“It was really heartening to see the
way people in Selwyn pulled together to
support each other in a tough year last
year,” Broughton said.
“we know we’re not through the full
effects of that as a nation, and that there
are sectors here in Selwyn that are still
feeling the pinch. But it’s good to see
much of our economy has remained
strong, businesses are positive about the
future and that we continue to support
each other as a community.”
Your guide to all things Real Estate
in the Selwyn District
Is your home as
pretty as a picture?
13
Some people say they aren’t ‘art’ people
because they don’t have expensive
paintings on the wall. But if you think
about it a little differently, art doesn’t
have to hang on the wall, does it? Art is
a learning experience and can take time.
If you like hanging photos or posters,
sculpture, pottery, paintings, drawings,
sketches, ornaments (the list goes on)—
it’s likely you really do appreciate art.
And when it comes to your home you
can follow a few simple tricks to show
off what you’ve got, or plan for what you
want.
What kind of art and where?
Lounge rooms are great spots to go
large and be dramatic if you can, and
don’t feel restricted to ‘paint on canvas’
options. Art comes in many forms and
you can play around with different layers
until you’re happy with the overall feel of
the space. Master bedrooms should give
off more of a relaxed vibe—think nice soft
tones or some landscape photography.
And don’t forget the kitchen, it’s probably
the one spot you can go for something a
little silly or quirky, and it’s your chance to
choose something a little smaller—so it
won’t overwhelm the room.
Put it where you’ll see it
If you’re trying to style your home
for sale, there’s no point putting your
favourite art behind the bathroom
door. And if you’re styling your home
for yourself, make sure you can see it.
Sit in all your favourite places and look
for blank spots on walls and angles you
mightn’t have noticed before. When you
sit at the kitchen table, what spaces can
you see through to the other end of the
home? It’ll help pinpoint where you could
add more personality.
Tips from the professionals
Katrina Ellis, Arts Administrator for
the Malvern Community Arts Council
(they run the Te Huanui Art Gallery)
says, “new builds don’t have the same
wall space as older houses, so we’re
seeing a trend of people looking for
smaller pieces. And younger people
don’t necessarily have the budget to
splurge on large, expensive art.” Their
‘Tiny Treasures’ exhibition is a great
opportunity to start or add to your
collection, and features work
from David Waterman, Ben
Groters and Asako Ridgen
(among many talented others)—
it’s on now until 29 April. And there are
at least three art galleries in Selwyn if you
want to keep your love of art local and
buy something unique, directly from the
creator:
• Te Huanui Gallery – 17 South Tce,
Darfield (open Tues-Thurs 11am-2pm
and Fri-Sun 10am-4pm).
• The Lakeland Art Gallery – 80
High St, Leeston (open Tues-Sun 10am-
4pm)
• Down by the Liffey – 1 James
St, Lincoln (open Wed-Thurs 11.30am-
2.30pm and Fri-Sun 10am-4pm)
