landing of Australian andNew<br />
Zealand soldiers the ANZACs <br />
at Gallipoli in 19<strong>15</strong>. Thousands<br />
lost theirlives.<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong>township has<br />
three Anzac Dayservices on<br />
Sunday, <strong>April</strong> 25.<br />
RSA <strong>Ashburton</strong> president<br />

service willinclude theraid<br />
siren and searchlights. And the<br />
civil service willinclude the<br />
firingofthe RSA’s 25pounder<br />
(fieldgun), which will fire three<br />
times.<br />

Theannualevent, organisedby<br />
Rotary International members,takes<br />
placearound aone kilometre circuit<br />
around thedomain.<br />
Organiser Gary Whiting said the<br />
event,whichusually drew in around<br />
100to130 people, manyofwhom<br />
were regulars, had been runningat<br />
leasteightyears.<br />
It wasall about fun, he said.<br />
People could walk or runaslittle,<br />
or as muchofthe circuit, as they<br />
wanted upto5km whichwas suited<br />
mostpeople.<br />
There is no prize for first, it’sa<br />
memorial walkand alsotosupport<br />
the activedefence forces.<br />
It costs $10 peradult to enter and<br />
$3 forstudentsandchildren; which<br />
includedasausage sizzle.<br />
He saidthe eventwas fully<br />
supportedbythe <strong>Ashburton</strong> RSA and<br />
allproceeds raised on the day would<br />
go to their Anzac Poppy Appeal<br />
funds.<br />
Thedomain routeincludeda<br />
section where white crosseswere<br />
placed. They not onlymarkedthe<br />
routebut wereareminder of why<br />
people hadgathered.<br />
There would also be ashort story<br />
or poematthebeginning and apiper<br />
wouldstart the walk/run event.<br />
It may beacommemoration event<br />
buteverybody enjoyed themselves,<br />
so the morepeople thebetter, he<br />
said.<br />

Poppy appeal<br />
Support the ReturnedServices Association<br />
and the servicecommunity by buying apoppy<br />
during their annual Poppy Appeal tomorrow,<br />
<strong>April</strong> 16.<br />
Collectors willbeonthe streets around<br />
townwith poppiesavailable for adonation.<br />
A$3donation canalso be made by texting<br />
‘Ash’ to 4622.<br />
It willsupport the<strong>Ashburton</strong> RSA.<br />
The poppy is areminder of sacrifices made<br />
byservice personnel –both pastand present<br />
asthey were the first flowers thatgrew in<br />
the battlefields of FlandersinBelgium<br />
during World WarOne andwereasymbol of<br />
remembrance and hope.<br />
The moneyraised from the street<br />
collectors will stay in MidCanterburyand<br />
benefitthe district’s pastand present<br />
personnel.
