EQUINE THERAPY
AT RANCHO BUENA VISTA

One of our biggest discovery this
trimester, actually days before this
edition was ready to go to press, Live
& Life in Palmas learned that at our
in-horse stables facilities, the Rancho
Buena Vista, many fascinating things
are taking place. The news that surprises
us the most are the Equine
Therapies, intended for children with
a broad variety of conditions: from Autism
to dyslexia to speech problems
etc. Immediately, Live & Life visited
the ranch and met this group of fantastic,
passionate and well-educated
women that have been working for
several months at the Rancho with
kids of all ages; they are Kenia Rosario
Gonzáles and Yasmín Pérez Guzman,
both Equine therapists. We also had
the opportunity to meet several of
the kids and we were truly impressed
by the patience and dedication these
women have with the children they
treat. The first one was a girl with autism
and physiological problems in her
spine; you can see the transformation
from the moment she arrived, to the
moment the therapy end. The second
one was a boy with speech problems
who clung to his mom at the beginning.
But it didn’t take long, and he
was soon responding to his therapists
and his horse. “He was in speech
therapy for months with little progress
and when he started with the equine
therapy his speech capacity improved
in weeks. The difference was evident!”
The three women involved in this
project, which they have called SIGHT
TO SEE A HORSE, formed a corporation
that works therapeutic, recreational,
educational and horse-riding
modalities for children and adults who
seek to improve their quality of life
and skills.
Sight to See a Horse has professionals
with more than 15 years of experience
in the area of health, education
and adapted sports that contribute
and are incorporated with equine
therapy and horse riding. They also
have an exclusive horse-riding specialist
who prepares participants for show
jumping or dressage.
But... What is equine therapy?
Horse-assisted therapy that includes
various therapeutic modalities. The
objective that is worked on is according
to what the therapist chooses as
a method to achieve the proper development
of each participant, such
as Hippotherapy, therapeutic riding,
adapted riding, therapeutic turning,
horse-assisted learning or coaching,
psychotherapy or counseling. assisted
with horses and therapeutic dressage.
This is definitely very good news,
and we congratulate Luis René Rivera
and Rancho Buena Vista for this initiative.

riding lessons for Kids
And the story behind
This horse & this sheep
When I visited the Ranch to learn more about Equine therapy, I came
across a scene that caught my attention. In the riding area, Maria Aponte
was offering riding lessons to a girl. For a moment I did not wonder
what the sheep was doing in the riding arena, but then I noticed that
the sheep became uneasy if the horse got too far from her. So I asked
what the sheep’s role was in the riding class, and that’s how I discovered
the story behind it. Turns out, Noche (the little sheep in this story) was
born 5 years ago in the cage of a horse named “Dreamy”. She and her
mother lived together with this horse for several months until the day
came to separate Noche from her mother, it was then that she became
attached to Dreamy in a very special way. She began to follow him everywhere
and to always want to be by her side. Sadly, Dreamy fell ill
and died in December 2020, after being with this sheep for 4 years.
Noche was very sad and anxious, which led her to seek refuge in the
only other horse she knew, Besito. Besito was Dreamy’s partner and he
always spent time with him, which is why he was well known to Noche.
Since Dreamy’s death, Noche has not wanted to stop being by Besito’s
side. She follows him everywhere and if she loses sight of him for some
reason she gets very nervous and starts looking for him. Therefore, Besito
and Noche are always together, they live in the same cage and when
Besito is in riding lessons she is with him, following him everywhere
and accompanying him at all times. Super fun and cute to watch. For

Hello everyone, my name is Luis Flores, Junior Tennis Coach and Live and
Life tennis correspondent. Every day players
ask me; how do I play tennis? Why is it
so hard to play tennis? Why am I missing this
shot? Why do I have to run so much? It’s easy,
just aim to hit the ball over the net, within the
margins of the court and see if your opponent
misses it. Wow is it that easy? absolutely. Tennis
is a sport that was invented to have fun
doesn’t matter if you win or lose, it provides us
the opportunity to feel pleasure by sweeting,
moving around the court, staying “in Shape”,
compete and most importantly to meet new
friends. This past weeks in Palmas del Mar’s
Tennis Center, our Junior Program players are
getting ready for this season of tournaments,
players like Marina Muñiz Sanchez, a 12-yearold
outstanding tennis player, has proven her
commitment on becoming a future tennis star
here and outside Palmas. Coach Manuel Julbe,
Junior program Tennis Director,
and I are very proud of all our players, and
honored to be part of your tennis journey this is just the beginning
of a wonderful one in a life time experience, don’t give up! In Palmas
Del Mar’s Tennis Center, we offer group clinics for all ages and
levels, contact the PAC tennis center for updates and times to book

Well done, keep it up!
I have realized that the measures
we have been taking this past year,
though difficult to practice and to
enforce, have allowed our Island
and our Community to have a lower
COVID-19 fatality rate than many
other countries and communities.
We can talk about resiliency, how to
take care of ourselves and of others
and how to teach younger generations
to do what is right to avoid a
life threatening infection and how to
use the technology to keep meeting
with our friends and our family. There have been
challenges we never anticipated; however, we are
better now than what we were a year ago. GOOD
FOR US, Palmas del Mar and GOOD FOR US Puerto
Rico.
This is my last message as PHA President and I
have been thinking about all the plans for activities
that could not take place due to the pandemic.
Nevertheless, it has been an honor for me to work
with a great team of neighbors, collaborators and
now friends. It has been a very challenging year
as we have had to continue to live with COVID-19,
learning about the virus, the disease it causes and
how this has affected every aspect of our lives.
Now we know about new variations that continue
to impede our return to the life we all want. In
addition, there are new mutations that we cannot
ignore. Many of us have undergone vaccination
and that is good; however, we cannot lower our
guard as the new mutations appear to be more
contagious than the ones used to make those
vaccines and more will develop. Please get vaccinated
for COVID-19. The vaccines were approved
for emergency use after more than 70,000 people
were vaccinated and, although some of them contracted
the virus, none of them died from it. They
can save lives and make the community safer.
It is time to transition and plan to keep Palmas del Mar as
one of the safest, most comfortable and peaceful places to
live in Puerto Rico. Now, more than a year ago, I am convinced
we need to be proactive in planning for disasters. Preparedness
is key to our community and will minimize the impact of
unforeseen events such as water shortages as water is one
of the most important elements for communities to ensure
survival and development. After the outage that took planec
on February 18th,, as many of you know, I requested an
emergency meeting with the PDMU Board which tookplace
on March 2, 2021. The PHA Executive Committee, and some
of the PDMU Board Members started a dialogue to discuss
and understand the actual conditions related to supply and
demand for water, possible collaboration to improve planning
for water shortages and opportunities to improve our infrastructure
and planning for future. These meetings will continue,
as there is work to be done. I suggest you attend both
the Palmas Homeowners Association (PHA) via Zoom and the
Palmas del Mar Utilities Inc. (PDMU) annual meetings so we
can all be well aware of the situation and future expectations,
plans and possibilities. As an active and united community,
working together we will be even better in the future.

GENERAL COMMNITY RULES AND GUIDANCE
Real estate activity at Palmas del Mar has been intense
and very productive for the last few years. In both 2019
and 2020, more than 200 properties were sold for each
of those years. This tendency continues in 2021. Since
we have a significant number of new owners in our Community,
it is important that we reinforce the educational
processes related to coexistence, as established in our
Restrictive Covenants and the architectural and aesthetic
standards governed by the PHA-ARB Guidelines. Also,
this information should serve as a refresher for long time
homeowners.
With the objective of increasing the values of our
properties and maintaining a safe, elegant and pleasant
environment for our residents and visitors, some of the
aspects related to the use and enjoyment of our properties
and our community that we must emphasize are the
following:
1. Each Owner shall maintain his or her Residential or
Commercial property in a manner consistent with
the Community-Wide Standards.
2. No nuisances shall be allowed on the Properties
nor shall any use or practice be allowed which is a
source of annoyance to residents or which interferes
with the peaceful possession and proper use of the
Properties by the owners and residents.
3. No improper, offensive, or unlawful use shall be
made of the Properties.
4. All dogs and cats must be properly
tagged for identification purposes
and leashed or carried by hand and
shall not be permitted to run loose.
Their Owners shall be responsible
for cleaning-up after their pets.
Only common domestic pets authorized
by current law shall be
permitted. No pet may be kept,
bred, or maintained for any commercial
purpose whatsoever or
become a nuisance or annoyance
to other owners.
5. No skateboards, four-tracks (other than security),
motorcycles or scooters will be allowed in the golf
cart paths, green areas, the maritime zone or in
any common areas controlled by PHA. Golf Carts,
Skateboards, Four Tracks, and any other unlicensed
vehicle is not be allowed in the streets of Palmas
del Mar.
6. No resident shall post a sign, advertisement, or
poster of any kind in or on the covered Properties,
specifically including, but not limited to, “Open
House”, “For Sale” and “For Rent” signs of any
type, without prior written approval of PHA.
7. No garment, rugs, or other items of any type visible
to other parties shall be hung from any portion of
the Properties.
8. No person shall park any vehicle in any location except
such locations designated for the parking of
vehicles and such vehicles will not interfere or invade
the right of way. No parking is permitted on
roadways, landscaped, or grassed areas within the
Properties.
9. No repair of motor vehicles shall be
made on any of the roadways, driveways, landscaped,
grassed or parking areas of the covered
Properties except in emergencies. Nor shall
any areas within the Development, unless
designated for such use, be used for storage
or parking of any boat, boat trailer, trailer,
camper, truck, or commercial vehicle.

the PHA-ARB Architectural Guidelines is important to
remember the following:
1. No owner shall make any exterior alteration, decoration,
repair replacement, nor place any screens,
jealousies or other enclosures on patios or other
parts of a Family Dwelling Unit except in accordance
with the PHA Covenants and the PHA-ARB
Design Guidelines.
2. The PHA-ARB Design and Development Guidelines
and Application and Review Procedures are
binding upon all persons who at any time construct,
reconstruct, refinish, alter, maintain any improvement
upon the property within Palmas del Mar, or
make any change in the natural or existing surface,
drainage, or plant life thereof.
To assist in complying with these directives, the PHA-
ARB Design Guidelines have been prepared to help
homeowners, designers, and builders to understand
and become active participants in the design process, to
ensure long-term community quality and elegance. The
intent is to coordinate the architectural diversity while
creating and interesting blend of homes that follows the
Mediterranean Character of Palmas del Mar and enhance
the natural environment around us. Some important aspects
to remember are:
1. Any New Constructions and any Exterior Modifications
and Additions to Existing Structures require
prior endorsement of Neighborhood Association
and/or Regime Association and the PHA-
ARB final endorsement. For swimming pools
construction or any other project that affect the
community’s sewer system, is also required the
PDMU’s evaluation and endorsement prior to the
evaluation of the PHA-ARB.

STANDARDS
The Palmas del Mar Homeowners Association (PHA)
Deed of Restrictive Covenants, which apply to every
property within the community of Palmas del Mar, requires
that every owner maintains its property, dwelling
unit, residential lot, commercial unit or commercial lot
including landscaping and improvements in a manner
consistent with the community-wide standards and all

with such requirements may result in fines imposed by
PHA. Additionally, the Restrictive Covenants stipulate
that owners are liable for any PHA expense related to
any maintenance, repair, or replacement rendered necessary
by his act, neglect or carelessness or by the negligence
of any member of his family, guests, employees,
agents or lessees.
As authorized by the PHA Covenants, PHA imposes
fines for violations of community-wide standards and
restrictions. Fines range from $200 to $2,000 depending
on the type of violation, lack of response to previous
notifications of violations or fines and frequency
of violation. Violations include, among others, unkept
or lack of maintenance to patios or lots, lack of property
maintenance as evidenced by uncontrolled growth

The use of family dwellings or a commercial
property at Palmas del Mar is
governed not only by law, but also more
importantly, by the provisions of the
Deed of Restrictive Covenants and the
rules and regulations of the Palmas del
Mar Homeowners Association (PHA).
These covenants, rules and regulations
have the force of law and shall be observed
by property owners, members of
their household, guest, invitees, tenants
and employees. Failure to comply with
community-wide standards and restrictions
by an owner or any other user of
his property may be grounds for immediate
action by PHA. Actions that may
be taker include the imposition of fines,
recovery of damages to common and
private property, injunctive relief and legal
action. Since the property owners are
ultimately responsible for the users of
their property, guests, family members,
employees, etcetera, any resulting fine
or action is usually levied against their
property account registered at PHA. It
is important to note that, as established
in the Covenants, during any legal action
stemming for non-compliance, property
owners are also fully responsible for all litigation
costs and attorney fees stemming
from such an action.
Recently, we have noticed a series of
violations to the Palmas del Mar restric-
tions by certain short-term renters and
business establishments. Violations include,
among others, making excessive
noise and inappropriate use of properties
becoming a nuisance to other neighbors
and interfering with their peace and
tranquility. As a result, fines ranging from
$200 t0 $2,000 have been imposed to the
owners of properties incurring or allowing
such violations to occur. Additionally,
in some cases, formal complaints have
been filed with the appropriate permits
office or government regulatory agencies.
Often, violations stem from lack of
knowledge about community restrictions
and standards.
Please help us keep Palmas del Mar
as the dream community we all deserve.

fully aware and complies with our restrictions,
rules and community wide standards.

or for a good night’s sleep. A good bathroom calls for a combination of high-tech
functionality, home comfort and strong design. Cleanliness and clarity are a very
important consideration in the design as well.

How do we get to all that?
I start my design with the
needs of my clients in mind.
Location is everything.
Location is everything. The placement
of the shower, toilet, bidet, vanity,
lighting and storage is vital. When
designing a bathroom, you can layout
three areas:
• Toilet and bidet area
• Wet area
(freestanding tub and a shower)
• Vanity area
(double or single vanity)
After drawing a floor plan with all
the requirements, we then proceed
with choosing the materials for the
project.
There are various great materials
that can be used in a bathroom.
The combination of organic materials,
textures, metals and wood (i.e.,
tile-imitating wood) are often used
to create a modern look. Big format
tiles are the trend now, but tiles on
the shower floor can’t be a sleeper.
The use of mosaics is still in the market
as well as using the same tile of
the floor but in smaller pieces.
The use of marble and travertine
in walls, floors and wet area is a way
to create a sophisticated look in any
bathroom.
There are varieties of toilets that incorporate
a bidet; smart bidets, and
therefore can save the client more
space in the bathroom. These you
can find them in EST Kitchen & Bath
by the brand Toto. For Wet Areas, instead
of using a traditional tub, you
can use the Freestanding tub, which
is a shower bedside an area that you
can enclose with glass doors. Additionally,
you can include a niche within
the shower wall that can hold the
bottles and soap and this way make
it tidier.
I like vanities to be custom-made.
This way I can satisfy and maximize
the space the client needs. Using under-mounted,
over-mounted or even
decorative bowls for the bathroom
sink is a great way to make a statement.
For the countertop is better
to use Quartz or a solid surface for
better maintenance and cleanliness.
Nowadays, mirrors with integrated
lighting are coming in different sizes
and shapes. For lighting, I recommend
recessed lighting with a fascia
not bigger than 4” down you can accommodate
the recessed lights or a
pendant in a specific area. By adding
a dimmer, you are able to control the
brightness of the light; the bulbs of
LED fixtures in a bathroom are rec-
ommended to be as white as possible;
almost like daylight. On the other
hand, bulbs in a “soft-white” range
of 2700K-3000K are recommended
for general bathroom use and for
makeup application in particular.

Raising our children is one of the most important projects
in a parents’ life. More than providing a safe home,
food and education, it is a process in which children are
supported and guided so that they have all possible
tools readily available to them to face the challenges

be happy.

Although the more intensive work is the parents’ responsibility,
the community in which they are brought up,
where they form relationships and spend their lives, plays
a fundamental role in their upbringing. In order to thrive,
children need to feel loved, accepted and protected.
However, parents don’t have to do this alone. It is a joint
venture between them, their extended family, the child’s
school, and the community in which they live.
The sense of community, safety, and neighborly love
and support that Palmeños have been able to build over
the years has attracted many young parents who look for
peace of mind and security while raising their kids.
We wanted to get to know and share our impressions
with some of these parents who have chosen Palmas as
the community in which they have brought up their children.
In the intimacy of their home, Mariel Figueroa López,
mom to nine-year-old Julián, and Edmanuel Cosme told
the story of how they made the important decision of
settling in Palmas del Mar so they could share the responsibility
of raising their child, even after divorcing a
few years ago. Julián currently lives with his mom and her
husband, Luis Guillermo Lebrón, who have been able to
build a different but excellent relationship with Julián’s
father, Edmanuel Cosme, by which they share all of the

parental responsibilities. This partnership has been crucial
in helping Julián navigate his relationships without
having to choose sides. In this way, children are able to
learn that love is not depleted just because it is also given
to other people.
Mariel and Edmanuel are not only partners in Julián’s
upbringing (their most important joint venture), but they
are also business partners. Both Mariel and Edmanuel,
who have known Palmas del Mar since they were teenagers,
highlighted what they believe are the most important
attributes of this community. They made the decision of
leaving the Metro area to find a community that offers a
warmer, calmer, safer environment that is also in harmony
with nature. Edmanuel confessed: “it was very important
for me to stay in the Palmas community. Taking Julián
to his activities effortlessly” and spending quality time
with him will make a big difference in the next stages of
his life, which will inevitably go by very quickly. “Children
grow up and fly. I have to enjoy it while I can and he’s still
young. If I live far away from him, it becomes a lot more
challenging”. Julián also feels like he belongs to a community
that supports and takes care of him, said Edmanuel.
It is here that he feels protected by all his friends and
neighbors. In Mariel’s case (as with the Flores family), her
parents also live in Palmas, which allows Julián to have a
closer relationship with his grandparents, another of the
most important factors in a child’s upbringing.
Meanwhile, the Registrar’s assistant in Palmas Academy,
Maggie Cordero-Maqueda, remembered when she
used to visit Palmas in the Summer. She always knew that
she wanted to live in a place like Palmas, especially when
she was ready to build a family and raise her children.
In 1997, with her husband José Maqueda, Maggie decided
to buy a property in Palmas. “The stress of life in
the Metro area is left behind and exchanged for peace
and comfort”. Maggie highlighted that she particularly
found comfort living a residential complex that includes
a school with high standards, like The Palmas Academy,
which is also in conveniently located in their backyard.
Palmas offers a school and a community where students
have many options and alternatives to develop more
than the basic skills. The Palmas Academy also offers a
comprehensive after-school curriculum with the added
benefit that children are taught along their neighbors,
who go to the same school. In a lot of cases, their teachers
are also their neighbors. After school, children can
play tennis, go to the beach club, the skate park or the
beach on their bikes, or golf carts, if they’re older, while
their parents can trust that they will be protected, not
only by Palmas Security but also by the community that
knows them. Their four children who have lived and studied
in Palmas have had these extraordinary opportunities,
said Maggie.
On this topic, Mariel Figueroa added that Palmas
Academy parents have constant communication, making
it easy to address their preferences and concerns, and
discuss important issues like extracurricular activities.
Furthermore, all parents have shared who has been safe
during COVID and, in the best way possible, that has
made a difference in these tough times.
In contrast, the Flores sisters, Dulce and Muñeca,
have had a different experience. Their extended family
has been the the driving force behind their decisions to
settle in Palmas. Knowing that their family is close, gives
them the comfort and peace to know that their children
will also continue to strengthen their links to family.
Dulce was the last member of the family to relocate
to Palmas. She stated that, after her father’s passing,
she made the decision to move with her husband Juan
Ignacio Campiño. They, like many others, only came to
Palmas during the weekends and for business purposes.
“We made the decision after my dad died. I was depressed
and wanted to be closer to my family; it was an
emotional decision”, she said. However, after six years,
Dulce and her husband have understood that it was the
best decision. It has been “incredible to live in a community
where everyone shares and knows each other.”
For Dulce, family is the most important thing, and, at
the same time, she cherishes that her children have the
opportunity to spend time and grow up close to their
cousins, who are about the same age. “It has also been
amazing to be around people you know and be able to
participate in many outdoor activities without the fear
that is experienced in other parts of the Island. The fact
that everyone here knows each other makes me feel safe
and secure because I know that, if there is an unforeseen
situation, I have friends and family around to help.”
Meanwhile, her sister Muñeca, mentioned that one
of the things she enjoys the most about living in Palmas
is being able to participate in year-round activities. She

explained that having accessibility to diverse events
and sports in the same place, without having to leave
the community, has been a godsend. “We all know each
other and that helps us ensure that our children are well
taken care of. The community helps them feel like family”,
the lawyer concluded.
On the other hand, Sheila del Rosario Camacho
González, has two children, Jorge Andrés, who’s 18 years
old, and Claudia Antonella, 15. She remembers that approximately
19 years ago, she and her husband, José
Flores (Muñeca and Dulce’s brother), bought a property
in Palmas del Mar. However, she mentioned that she had
been familiarized with the community for longer than
that because many of her friends lived in the residential
complex and they visited often. In addition, Sheila has
had an office in Palmas for 23 years.
As with the other Palmeños we interviewed, Sheila
expressed that living in Palmas had been a family goal
because the area has specific attributes that stood out
to them. “Being able to work while being close to my
children has given me the advantage of being able to
monitor them.” Even when work is busy and complicated,

she can rest easy knowing that her children are safe and
taken care of.
The Palmas community offers opportunities that are
not available in other areas: a school, a church, sports.
Even when you have to leave the community, there are
little issues with traffic which means less complications
to daily life, she added. “I am blessed to have my children’s
father’s family living in this community. That union,
the closeness of his family, has allowed for a good interaction.
Our kids can walk to their grandparents’ house.
They are our neighbors, which has promoted a close
family link”, said Sheila.
Palmas del Mar is definitely an ideal place to raise children;
it is a safe, healthy and protected environment. As
the African proverb states “it takes a village to raise a
child”. This implies that the community in which a child
grows unavoidably influences the adult they will become.
Raising a child is one of the most complicated and
demanding yet satisfying things anyone can do; it can be
a difficult and often lonely journey. However, living in an
involved, caring and loving community such as Palmas
means you don’t have to do it alone. L

Puerto Rico. It’s fascinating
to look around and see people often
take pictures of the view, different
kind of boats, the ocean, sunrises
and sunsets, but more than a marina,
“there is life going on.” This is
acommunity of “boaters” people
that have visit from other different
partsof Puerto Rico, Florida, Georgia,
Massachusetts, California, Colorado,New
Mexico, Texas, Nebraska,
Michigan, Missouri, Georgia, Bahamas,
Greece, Spain, France, South
Africa, New Zealand, etc. The Coronavirus
has made an impact in the

There are people that visit every
six months, and live in the boat or
rentfor that period of time. Some
other people visit or have a quick
stop forcouple of days, weeks, some
have done a quick stop, falling in
love with our precious Island, the
people, the convenience, safety, accessibility,the
mountains, weather,
culture, food, work opportunities or
retirement, and make Puerto Rico
their new “home.”
It’s a great privilege for me to
have the opportunity of meeting so
many interesting people, with such
great experiences and stories about
their true meaning and purpose of
sailing around the world. People of
different ages, and lifestyles switch
to finally, “start living”! A personal
growth with a new, true meaning.
People that share love and respect
for nature, “the music of the ocean,
salty winds, the warmth of the sunny
days, the companion of the moon
and the magic of the stars, a taste of
freedom, to Feel Alive.”!
This is a community of boaters,
people that help each other. There
is a sense of humanity and understanding
because they live the
same lifestyle. So
often, people have recommended
Puerto Rico, and
those who listen to it, feel
lucky to be here!

The Dark Side (1997 Hatteras 52)
From Dallas, Texas, he worked
two decades as a Corporate Pilot,
until September 2015, when he
suffered a hemorrhagic stroke. He
had three different procedures, as
a result, he couldn’t fly anymore.
While recovering, he decided he
wanted to sail (which he has done
for a while now). From that moment,
he started sailing non-stop
around the world for six years now.
After having problems with his
sailboat, in 2021, he is starting a
new adventure in a motor boat he
bought in a Ponce, Puerto Rico...
that’s the reason of the name The
Dark Side,” because it is a new
step, a new way!
I have been following Bobby,
through his YouTube program
“Sailing Doodles” for two years
now, and it’s been great to have
the opportunity to interview him
while he’s anchored at the Yacht
Club Marína, Palmas Del Mar, Humacao
Puerto Rico.
He’d been in Puerto Rico for a
month and about a week in the Marina,
Palmas Del Mar.
He’d been here a year ago, loved
Puerto Rico and the Caribbean! A
reason why he is looking forward in

Next, he would like to visit Culebra, Virgin Islands, Tortola, St. Martin, St. Barts, etc.
making Puerto Rico his next home
and make it his work base.
What he loves about the Palmas
Marina, is that it gives him the
opportunity to enjoy his morning
run, in a safe, diverse and safe environment,
its amenities such as
pool, access to the beach, hiking,
restaurants, and shops. He will also
be able to enjoy the ocean kayaking,
paddle boarding, snorkeling,
diving, etc... He admits his travels
have been a learning process, understanding
the weather condition,
repairs and work on a boat,
also trying to get good WiFi connection.
But the most important learning
process has been getting the
chance to meet people and places
from around the world, for example,
the Marquez family he met in
Hiva-Oa, French Polynesia, a couple
with children and a dog, living
on a boat. To see them so happy
and grateful about life through the
way that were living, left him with
a lesson of embracing life and its
purpose (even with his personal
2nd chance in life) being happy
where you are, with what you have.

One Love
The name of the boat, a Catamaran,
is a connection with their
feeling for their home in Loveland,
Colorado and also in part for Bob
Marley’s song, with the same name.
And as a believer in Jesus Christ,
the only begotten Son of God and
John 3:16 “For God so loved” we
believed in this “One Love.”
Both, Julie and Michael, share
their passion to travel. When they
first visited Puerto Rico, they were
in Marina Puerto Del Rey, Fajardo,
PR, but later good friends recommended
the Yacht Club Marina in
Palmas Del Mar Humacao.
They have been in Puerto Rico
since July 2020.
The love it here! It feels safe, its
beautiful, clean, and has nice facilities.
The people that work in the
marina are very friendly and careful.
It’s a community where everyone
cares for each other. The pool,
access to the beach, restaurants,
shops, are so convenient! “It has
been a great experience”
Julie and Michael have been sailing
since 2017, through Florida, Belize
(where they chartered a boat)
Bahamas, BVI’s, and Puerto Rico.
They started sailing “For the love
for the water”, not living the regular
life, preferring the life on a boat
because is so peaceful!
Through sailing Julie’s experience
has brought her to feel like “I’ve
got everything I wanted.”
They both have access to work
from the boat, but they have also
learned how to repair and basic
maintenance of the boat....
The feeling of freedom, ocean,
climate is a great experience. They
love sailing.
It’s a blessing, to have the opportunity
to sail the ocean, serenity,
simplicity a great lifestyle.

less material things, living light.

7 Seas Kahani (45’ Catamaran)
“7 Seas Kahani Odyssey, means
cultural adventures and stories. Kahani
is the Hindi word for Story. The
focus is to improve people’s life stories
through education and career
goal setting.” Mo and Raj
Mo and Raj, have travelled the
world, making new friends and having
experiences of a lifetime.
After living in Boston, Massachusetts
for many years, and retirement,
they discovered that Raj
had a rare muscle disease known
as Inclusion Body Myositis, which
is affecting his use of his arms and
legs. After this knowledge, they
decided to live a new adventure
through sailing... “wanting to give
back and have fun, they started an
organization to provide technology
training in underserved areas. Project
"7SKO.”
Mo and Raj have been sailing for
two years.
The idea of coming to Puerto Rico
was influenced by the knowledge
that is part of the United Sates,
and because it feels like an extension
of the benefit system, help on
emergencies from U.S, the Spanish
Heritage, the culture, the climate
(which is very important and convenient
for Raj’s condition), nature,
and the opportunity of hiking the
mountains.
We love the people, people are
very warmth, “it feels like home”, it
feels exotic!
Mo and Raj, have been here for
a month, didn’t plan to stay more,
but the experience of being in the
Yacht Club Marina, Palmas Del Mar,
Humacao Puerto Rico, and other
areas, the good friends, safety, etc.
have helped them to make the decision
to live here! They decided it
just 2 weeks ago.
Since they got married, they enjoy
going around the world and
hiking important and well-known
mountains, as their special connection,
later on, they included
their kids and it’s been a connection
of essence, love and tradition
through the years.... something
that brought them together. Now,
through his second chance in life,
after Raj health condition, the plan
is to grow old close to the water.
After retirement they bought a
boat, now they bring home with
them, enjoying the places they visit
and going back home (or the boat)
at the end of the day.
A beautiful, peaceful, quite exquisite...

Mo and Raj have learned to not
stress on small things. By reading,
they have learned to work on little
things, when they go to marinas,
they get the help they need, and
also learned that “boaters help
each other,” because they share
the same lifestyle. Even making
a system in the boat specially for
Raj, so he can safely get in and out
of the boat, the water, by a good
friend in Granada, carefully designed
and he made sure it works.
There is a humanity sense of sharing
and a feeling of instant community
wherever they go.
“It’s about the freedom to go where you want to go,
at the speed you want.”

Family,” Kyle (dad, an engineer) Danielle

lovely, (6) kids, Kyla, Charlie, Emily,

a journey of a lifetime!
They waited for the right time,
and in 2019 they bought their dream
boat (catamaran) in Grenada, with
the specifications, space, and qualities

The 2020-2021 academic school year has been a challenging
one to say the least. As I explained to my students,
during any difficult time it is important to recognize
the positive aspects as well. By students working independently
in the kitchen, they have been given the opportunity
to become more confident in their cooking. For
the first time, parents were able to taste dishes prepared
by their children. A special moment that truly warms my
heart, is when a grandmother assisted during the cooking
process with their grandchild. Overall, the students will

a magical journey

When I was first asked to write this article about a recent trip to
Tanzania, Africa I was simply thrilled. Sadly I have never visited any
parts of Africa...yet, however as I heard Robert Lowry, Elisabeth Cusack,
Dr. Alison Levitt, Doris Muñoz, Zandy and Bruce Deichl’s fascinating
stories of their experiences, it was as if I could feel Africa’s warmness
and mystical power myself. As if I could imagine the joy and the peace they
felt. It was simply amazing.
I was told the trip actually began in late September when in the midst of trying
to survive the new “normal” the question arose of where...anywhere in the world
could one go to try and enjoy oneself, be safe and try to regain some sense of sanity?
A quick call by Bruce to a friend and previous safari guide in Arusha, Allen
Mnyenye, answered the question...TANZANIA! Reported Covid deaths of 21
out of 59 million and none since June seemed impossible and the comment
that there are NO TOURISTS sealed the deal. A quick discussion with Robert,
Elisabeth, Alison, Doris and Zandy and our travel group was formed. Bruce,
having been there 7 prior times worked with Allen Tanzania Safari to set the
specific itinerary and the incredible trip in normal times quickly became THE
trip of a lifetime in this current crazy environment.
Accommodations in Tanzania are varied and go from a simple tent to luxurious
lodges. Based on Bruce’s prior experience he suggested glamping as the
way to go as he described “there is NOTHING more exhilarating than
hearing the roar of a lion, the laughing of hyenas or the growling of
an elephant’s stomach as you lie in comfort”! That’s true Africa. He
wasn’t wrong.
In addition, a nightly tequila (or two). Or in Robert’s case a Kilimanjaro
Beer while sitting in front of a blazing camp fire watching
stars brighter than in a planetarium just doesn’t get any
better. All meals were “organic food to table”...everyone got
healthier and even lost a bit of weight and as Elisabeth said
“everyday was a new adventure”.
One of the things I considered to be special and peculiar
about this trip is that it was a group trip...albeit a small
group when compared to a typical Ambercrombie & Kent
trip of 18. We had the same quality, if not better, customized
to our group at a discounted price. Sharing this powerful
experience of going to the oldest continent in the
world where first man was discovered nearby can bond you
in inexplicable ways. While you share significant moments
and experiences together, you also develop a special, individ

ual take on the trip. Your own spiritual growth, your own
favorite aspects and significant or emotional moments.
You grow, and enjoy the charm of traveling together,
but what you learn and what moves you is particular and
unique to your experience only.
To go out daily on game drives to see first hand (not
on Discovery Channel) a lioness and her cubs, herds
and herds of elephants, impalas, zebra, giraffes, cheetah,
leopard and THOUSANDS of wildebeests starting
to form their great migration in Southern Serengeti is a
sight to see.
Moreover, the people, the animals (again) and overall
the activities that took place were the highlights for the
group. And so.. how can you not have the best time of
your life in Africa? We come from there, earliest civilization
was recorded in Africa, and as puertoricans we
share a great vast amount of blood and culture with Africans.
Doris own significant and emotional experience
can confirm this. There was a moment where she was
watching the African people dancing and singing, and
right there she felt a powerful, spiritual connection as
she remember Puerto Rico. This moved her, and so she
started talking to African girls that were singing, dancing
and having a great time. They talked about puertorican
culture and how we as puertoricans carry the African soul
within us. They talked about how similar our music and
food was and how we were a mixed of many many races
and ethnicities. At the end, they asked Doris to sing for
them, so she sang with her angelical and colorful voice,
nervous as ever! This was by far the most special and
moving moment for Doris.
The most significant moment for Zandy and Bruce
was scattering Elayne’s (mother and wife) ashes into a
Baobab Tree. When Allen was asked if he could find a
suitable tree he actually found the very first tree Bruce
and Elayne had picnicked at on a prior trip...the one
who Elayne had somehow gotten seeds from that she
planted into her own tree in the States. Seeing that
very same tree and giving her the
gift of eternal peace and allowing
themselves closure, is a beautiful,
moving story. Distinctively special,
incredibly emotional and unique.
And it touched and moved me
greatly when I first heard.
Now we’ll, when it comes to activities
and adventures the experiences
together, I don’t think Robert
will ever forget his hike on Mt. Kilimanjaro
with Alison while waiting
for Elisabeth’s arrival . For Doris it
was the game drives, watching the
animals from her tent and visiting Spicetown in Zanzibar.
For Zandy, it was playing soccer with the locals and visiting
the Shalom Orphanage Center in Karatu, that the
Deichl’s had adopted 13 years prior. That will always be
another special memory of the group.
Undoubtedly, there are numerous stories you can tell
when going to Africa, and I’m sure I have only scratched
the surface. But I hope that as highlighted the best
ones you feel convinced as I am, to add Tanzania, Africa
to your bucket list of places you need to visit especially
while tourism is still at a low. Having the country
to yourself due to Covid is far better than fighting with
hundreds of like minded tourists. July, August and September
this year is the time to go. After all “travel is the
only thing you can buy that makes you richer”.

Shalom Orphanage in Karatu. Mama Wera
is the woman that runs the orphan center.
In 2007, the Deichl family stopped by the Shalom Orphanage in Karatu to donate some clothes and food. It
was supposed to be a 15 minute stop, but it turned into two days. Bruce, his wife, and his children both fell
in love with the orphanage. Upon leaving, Elayne wanted to adopt them all, but Bruce suggested instead
“adopting” the orphanage better. Over the next year, the Deichls and some friends were able to bring in
electricity and then a computer, drill a water well to bring clean water and irrigate crops, build a cow barn, a
chicken coop, and a barn. Mama Were, the director of the Orphanage is still in charge and the group spent
several very rewarding hours with the children

What Lorenzo learned...

Lorenzo is a very friendly and intelligent boy, but
he has a particular trait that drives his mother crazy.
Perhaps you know somebody with the same trait? He
leaves everything until the last moment and today is
no exception. His teacher asked the class to write a
composition where they would share what they had
learned during the Pandemic. The problem is that
he had to send it via e-mail before three o’ clock in
the afternoon and in the heat of the moment his mind
stopped working! If he told his mother, she would certainly
punish him and take away his cellular phone. He
would have to find help somewhere else. Suddenly,
he remembered his wise and loyal friends that he had
met on his bicycle trips. Surely, they would have great
ideas, he told himself!
He got on his bicycle and decided to first visit his
turtle friends in the Pterocarpus forest. Luckily, they
were out getting some sun as they did most mornings.
When they saw him arrive they were very happy. After
saying hello, Lorenzo told them about his assignment.
The turtles had a small meeting to reflect on the question.
The oldest turtle answered:
“Lorenzo, we learned that troubling moments
are best passed when we live in a community and we
help each other. This time together permitted us to
get to know each other and build strong bonds of
friendship. Now we know that we are not alone and
that together we can overcome any obstacles that
life may bring to us” said the turtle very emotionally.

Lorenzo thanked them and rode on his bicycle to
the duck pond. He took a small bag of bread from
his pocket and was quickly surrounded by ducks of all
sizes. Once again, he told them the situation and they
happily gave him their advice.
“Lorenzo, the hardest thing for us has been not
to be able to spend time with our families that are
far away. Not knowing when we will be reunited is
incredibly sad. But we have learned that when we are
able to be together again, that time will be priceless,
and we will enjoy it to the maximum. Family is the
greatest treasure one can have!”
Lorenzo thanked them and headed to an almond
tree on the golf course where he knew that a group of
iguanas liked to sunbathe.
“What are you doing here Lorenzo? We haven’t
seen you in a long time!” said the chorus of iguanas.
Lorenzo explained the reason for his visit. This time
there was no need for a meeting as the eldest iguana
spoke up:
“Lorenzo, in this Pandemic we have learned to value
the gifts that nature has given us: the cool breeze,
a sunrise at the beach, a rainbow after a rain shower,
the song of the birds, a leisure walks in the woods,
etc. Before, we were so busy that we would not stop
to enjoy the small things that bring peace and harmony.
We need to unite to value, care for, and maintain
our Planet. Together we can make the difference!”
Wow, I am really lucky to have such wise friends!
thought Lorenzo. Now I will visit my friends the pelicans
at the beach. Hopefully, they will be fishing by the
seashore.
“Hi Lorenzo, what a pleasant surprise to see you
around here!” -said the leader of the group. Once
again, Lorenzo posed his question. While the pelicans
decided on a response, Lorenzo decided to go for a
swim. Just when he was getting out of the water, the
leader of the group had an answer for him.
“Lorenzo, you know what, the thing we most appreciate
in this pandemic is to have great friends with
whom we can have conversations. To have a friend
with whom you can share your troubles has made a
huge difference. The best gift that you can give to a
friend is to listen to him with your full attention. Fortunately,
we are always there for each other.”
Then it was the turn of the herons that liked to fish
by the big lagoon. They did not make him wait long
for a reply.

“Lorenzo, that is a good question. We herons have
learned many things during this stage, but one of the
most important, has been to learn to share the food
which we catch. Before, each one of us used to find
his own food, but now we make sure everyone has
something to eat. Sharing our food has been something
incredibly beautiful and it has united us as a
community.”
It was not difficult to find the parrots as they always
got together in the afternoon by the trees in front of
Palmas Doradas. When Lorenzo got to them, they already
knew about his predicament. Their friends the
herons had told all the animals in the neighborhood.
So, they had their answer ready.
“Lorenzo, one remarkably interesting thing that
we have learned is that we don’t need many material
things to be happy. Before, we spent time looking for
and buying things that we thought were important
but now we are equally happy with much less. We
can’t go back to filling our lives with things that we
really don’t need and that contaminate our Earth.”
One of his favorite birds, the “Playero Sabanero”,
gave him an answer that seemed right on!
“After the pandemic we won’t miss out on any social
events that we are invited to. How we miss being
with our friends, those small things that we would
take for granted sharing an ice cream, walking in the
park, going to the beach, talking, playing cards, and
so many other things. We won’t think twice in the
future about accepting invitations!”
When at last he went to the white cockatoo in
the wetland, she also had learned about his mission.
In a serious tone she gave her reply.
“Lorenzo, I have learned that if from the
beginning of the pandemic we had thought
about the well-being of the entire group

not have had so many people getting sick or

dying. If we had followed the basic instructions of
wearing facemasks, keeping safe social distance, and
washing our hands, we would be in a much better
situation. We are still in time to learn that a little bit
of sacrifice for the common good makes us all better
people!”
Lorenzo returned to his house very emotional because
his friends had given him some especially important
and profound answers. He realized that he
had also learned a lot during the pandemic and the
most important thing of all was to have the privilege of
being a part of such a united community!

Here again folks, hoping that you have
kept your ball out of the “malangas” and are
enjoying our beautifully kept golf courses. On
this occasion I would like to address the big
elephant in the room and that is the RULES OF
GOLF…. Do you play by them or not? I have always
said if you play golf and do not apply the
rules of golf 100% you are playing something
else, taking in consideration that the rules in
golf are an intrinsic part of the game.
While golf has been played for more than
600 years, the earliest known written rules
for the game date from 1744. This early code
of “Articles & Laws in Playing at Golf” (known
today as the “13 Articles”) was drafted by The
Gentlemen Golfers of Leith (later known as the
Honorable Company of Edinburgh Golfers) for
a single day of competition on the Leith links.
Still, the principles represented in these 13
rules fundamentally describe the same sport
that is played around the world today.
In every group there is an enforcer of the
rules and in my group, it happens to be me.
You can be the most liked or hated guy in the
group, depending on your rulings. What people
do not understand, is that if you know the
rules, they can help you. They are not there to
penalize you; they are there to keep a fair level
playing field.
I love it when I am playing with people that
are starting to play the game and they tell me
that they are shooting 95 or less and when I
start enforcing the rules, their scores keep going
up and they start resenting me. In the beginning,
they are like “Yes teach me the rules
I want to learn”, but when their scores start
going up they start to hate me.

A GUIDE TO THE GOLF RULES
The rules of golf have been evolving for the
last 300 years to keep up with golf equipment,
course designs, maintenance, pace of the
game, considering the popularity of the game.
In the same way you and your group can make
you own rules when playing a friendly weekend
warrior round, remember that golf rules
are there to keep a level playing field, so everybody
is on the same page.
Taking in consideration that many times
we do not play in the same immaculate golf
courses that the pros do (except us PAC members)
we can create our own winter rules, when
everybody involved agrees:
• Mulligan in the first hole, two shots, a lot
of us come in 5 minutes before tee time all
stressed out and do not have time to hit the
range, so two drives allowed in the first hole
if needed.
• Famous bunkers with no sand in sight,
move to sandy area in bunker, if there is no
sand to be found drop out of bunker not closer
to the pin.
• Your ball lands in the fairway on bare
ground, no grass, not marked ground under
repair move the ball to where there is grass so
you do not ruin your clubs.
• Extremely wet areas in the fairway, but not
enough to use the casual water rule, so you
can move the ball to a dry area.
These are some examples of what can be
done to have a more enjoyable outing and fair
for everybody involved, depending on the conditions
of the course. These rules of engagement
should be discussed at the beginning of
the match and not changed, once agreed on,
they are PRGA / USGA / R&A sanctioned. .
In numerous occasions I have participated
in seminars sponsored by the PRGA, you almost
must be a lawyer with a specialty in international
relations to be able to decipher the
different rulings in all the possible scenarios.
I must admit that I am a purist of the game
of golf that plays by the rules 100%, 99% of
the times but we can’t lose perspective of why
we play golf and that it is for relaxation and
friendly competition and a way to challenge
ourselves to improve our game.
So, until next time, keep the ball in the short
grass and away from the Pangolas.

This edition’S recognition goes to....
FAIRLAKES VILLAGE
Fairlakes Village was designed and built in 1988 by the
prestigious architect Esteban Padilla and the firm Custodio-Rodríguez
& Associados, a firm of architects, engineers
and planners. It has 9 buildings, 100 two-bedroom
units with the exception of the penthouses that have 3
bedrooms. It was built by PDMPI. Fairlakes Village currently
has a proactive and financially conscious board
of directors; but history played a trick on them. Ready
to paint and make various necessary improvements,
without warning, Hurricane Maria came and upset their
plans. And, as everyone knows, Fairlakes Village was one
of Maria’s most abused housing complexes. Some people
even claim that a tornado formed during the hurricane
that hit them. That is not proven, but many think
that something like this happened. But ... because they
already had a budget for paint and other repairs before
the hurricane, they were able to work on cleaning and
restoring urgent matters while negotiating with the insurance
company. Hence the importance of reserves and
good administration! “We started with the most critical
areas like collecting debris, lights, and so on. Later on,
we reached a satisfactory agreement with the insurance
company, something that took a year and a half,” emphasized
Mr. Franciso Méndez, President of Fairlakes.
It was then that the remodeling and reconstruction
tasks began. Among the improvements made, in addition
to the gate that we all see as we pass, Fairlakes
changed its railings, the lighting of the stairs and gardens,
they revised the colors and very importantly they
worked with the erosion of the lake with adequate anti-erosion
techniques and gardens designed by Christ
Pennock. On the other hand, it opened accesses to the
beach at certain points of the complex so that its residents
can access the beach more easily. Fairlakes shares
the large lake that borders the complex with the golf
course and Mare Sereno. “We still have two projects in
the pipeline,” Fico Méndez told us, adding that it involves
resurfacing the parking lot and more landscaping.
One of the main attractions of Fairlakes is its beautiful
lookout area, with its swimming pool and views of the
lake and the golf course. In addition, its location should
be highlighted. It is within walking distance of the beach,
the tennis center, the beach club and the hotel. Good
job for Fairlakes Village! L

Just for fun and friendly
competition, the group of
tennis friends who regularly
play Monday, Wednesday
and Friday mornings
decided to organize a
mini-tournament, in which
a total of 32 players participated.
It was a sort of
round robin where groups
of 4 were randomly organized
to play a number of
games, switching partners
and ultimately playing with
and against players of different
levels. Each group
scheduled their own play
time. Points were accumulated
by player based
on games won and the
top scores advanced to
the semi-finals and subsequently
to the final games.
At the final games we were
able to watch players from
all levels on the same court,
playing with and against
each other. We had a great
competition, great challenges
and a great time.
Thanks to the donation of
one of our members, prizes
were awarded to the top
3 finalists. The camaraderie
was great. It’s a good feeling
to have a tennis family
and to be able to add life
to the PAC Tennis Club
courts! Looking forward to

We want to begin by announcing that we’re back in our office at Palmanova
Plaza Suite 199-C, right next to Yogen Früz. We follow strict
COVID-19 precautions, so if you do want to come by the office, make

On this edition, we’re going to cover the subject of the change
in the way condominium master policies are done. The Puerto
Rico Insurance Commissioner made a ruling back in August
2020, stating that resident associations no longer have a responsibility
to insure the structural property of the owner within
the apartment, better known as original privative elements.
These are: bathtubs, showers, toilets, videts, sinks, vanities,
floor and wall tiles, kitchen cabinets and countertops, closet
doors and shelves, fascias, among others. This newly established
“Barewall” policy covers the buildings (including your apartment)
and common areas of the condominium, but excludes said
original privative elements – so it is now understood that it will be
the responsibility of each unit owner to insure the property that
is excluded in a Barewall policy. Your condo’s resident association
should have the information on the value of the original
privative elements of your apartment. There is a valuation that
is used to determine the value that is insured in your condo
complex, and it includes the value of the original proprietary
elements. Also, make sure to ask for the company name and
policy number of the master policy in your condo.
If you’ve done remodeling to your apartment, there is an important
difference between original privative elements and improvements.
When an owner remodels and makes changes to
the original privative elements, that property must be covered
under Additional Improvements coverage. This coverage is
only for original privative elements that have been altered. Let’s
say for example that you had your kitchen cabinets remodeled
and changed the floor tiles in your living room. Those are not
considered original anymore and have to be insured as an additional
improvement.
Once you have the value of the original privative elements of
your apartment, and the master policy number and name of
the insurance company, we can offer you a quote for a HO-6
policy, designed specifically for this purpose, or as an alternative,
if you have a personal “package” policy currently active
with us, we can quote you an endorsement covering your original
privative elements with a broader coverage. Please note
that both alternatives above apply as long as your property is
located farther than a thousand feet from the coast line.

another incident on the beach that almost cost a life.
Even with the red flags placed on the beach, weather
channel news and other media about the strong currents,
some people insist on getting into the ocean.
That morning a Palmas resident nearly lost her life.
Fortunately she was rescued on time by two brave
young male Crescent Cove employees. Thanks to
Hector and Josua for saving a life. Please be on the
lookout for notifications from weather channels and
the beach flags. This is the second time during the
last two weeks that this occurs. Don’t take anychances
! If you see the rough sea, don’t go in.

This post arises from an experience lived the day before
yesterday in one of our walks. A golf cart passed us with
three small children on the back seat, the one in the center
a VERY small toddler. All three were loose. Those on the
extremes of the seat at least were holding into the armrest
of the back seat, the one in the center, almost a baby was
completely loose. We were three people walking and we
were all petrified! If that person had had to stop, those
children, at least the one in the middle, would shoot out
onto the pavement. As a result of that experience, I called
Carts Pro to inquire if they offered the installation of seat
belts, which they confirmed. If you want more information

memory
of a father

Remembering keeps the memory and legacy of those
we loved, but lost, alive! It keeps us dreaming of past
loved ones, while celebrating their lives and legacy.
Even though, as soon as we are born, we are dying,
remembering dear lost ones, do make them live forever
in our hearts and spirit. I
did lose my best friend and
father, Roberto Velazquez, in
July 2020…another victim of
cancer. In keeping his memory
alive, I wanted to share
with you all a bit the story of
a great man, who loved to
live in Palmas. He was born
& raised Humacaeño and
an adopted Palmeño. I ventured
to become a Palmeño
in 2009 and my father followed
later on too. Convincing
him to move full time
to Palmas, was very easy
indeed, it was about the
beautiful ambiance, the very
nice people, being in a safe
place, and of course there
was so much to do. Retiring
in Palmas to him, was about
walks, nature, people and friends. My sister & I had the
peace of mind that our beloved dad was safe and happy
in the Palmas community. We like to thank all of his
dear Palmas friends, whom so caringly were a part of
his life. Now that he passed away, we have the comfort
to know that he lived a long, happy and loving life. And
some of his best years, tearfully his lasts, were here at
Palmas. As saddened by the loss as we are, we stand
proud of his life and legacy. We remember the memory
of our father by dreaming of him being in a better
place, dearly at god’s side, forever in our minds, and
everlastingly in our hearts. Love you forever dear father
and friend. L

PTO Board:
We would like to take this opportunity to thank the
community for their continued support of The Palmas
Academy (TPA). For over 25 years The Palmas Academy
has been an integral part in developing and preparing
students by fostering creativity and leadership
through its academic programs. Graduates have gone
on to become leaders in their respective fields and represent
Dolphin pride all over the world. Along the way
of this great journey, there have been challenges from
natural disasters to the most recent global pandemic.
Schools across the world have been forced to adapt to
an ever-changing set of guidelines over the last year
and TPA has been no different. However, through any
such challenge, the outcome has been the same- a renewed
spirit and resilient desire to succeed. The dedication,
tenacity, and commitment from our parents,
teachers, and our surrounding area is the reason The
Palmas Academy remains a pillar of the community.
Once again, we thank you for your continued support
and look forward to the 2021-2022 school year.

One year after the pandemic ...
Last year around this time, just the day before the
April 2020 cover photo was taken, the government
announced the first shutdown and our lives
went on mandatory hiatus. Everything stopped
still. Among them was our Live & Life in Palmas
April 2020 edition that was not published. We all
entered a state of collective shock because we did not believe what
we were living. There were so many doubts about the Coronavirus
at that time and the “street scientist” did not wait. All types of misconceptions
were spread in social media and other media, as well
as the proliferation of memes and jokes. It was so shocking to realize
that we could not get together with our friends and family, in
my case, my daughter could not visit me. She
would visit me and stay in the parking lot in
front of my villa in a beach chair. It was the first
time I cried of helplessness and deep sadness.
Not being able to hug my daughter !!! Inconceivable.
And so, little by little we adapted to
our new reality and began to use our Puerto
Rican ingenuity to meet cybernetically
with the famous Zooms.
Believe it or not I had a 7 hour
social gathering with my friends
from SJ. There was one of my
friends that even went to a meeting
and came back to the Zoom
get together. We downloaded exercise
programs from the Internet and sometimes we
would get together (virtually) to do the routines. In my house
I started using a green area behind my villa that was never
used before, which my sister called “La Plaza de la Libertad”/
Liberty Square (she even made a plaque for it). We chose
the name Liberty Square because there we could meet at a
distance and with masks. Each one brought their beach chair
and snacks (remember we couldn’t share food at that time)
and we had a good time together, praying that it wouldn’t rain
because if it rained the meeting would be over. One day we were
there with umbrellas, until the rain got worse and each of us had to
go home. Another of my many blessings has been having two of
my sisters and my brother living in Palmas. There are 4 of us living
in Palmas now and this has been very supportive. We called each
other, we went for walks and we supported each other with the purchases
and supplies of the pandemic. Now vaccinated, we see each
other more comfortably! Although there is one of my sisters who I
believe that she and her husband will never stop wearing a mask! I
will not mention names. LOL. I also have to give credit to my group
of friends who throughout this year have been present giving me

always looking for ways to get
together in a safe way. I have
to also recognize this wonderful
community that for the most
part has respected the standards established by the Department
of Health. We have also been lucky enough to live in a
large open space such as Palmas with a continuous tropical
sea breeze and fresh air.
Now, we are starting a new stage where, once vaccinated, we
are entering some sort of normalcy. Certainly a great relief,
but we have not yet reached the end of the tunnel. At the
close of this edition I heard the PR Secretary of Health affirm
that the cases are increasing and the positivity rate has doubled
from 4% to 8.3%!! (According to the World Health Organization,
the virus is controlled when this rate, along with other
factors, do not exceed 5%). The
situation is worrying because

vaccinated do not know how protected
we are. This is not over yet!
Take care friends, we’ve come this
far, let’s not lower our guard. Grateful
to life for allowing me
to spend this year in health
and sanity (well... more or
less). Thanks to my community
and my family for that
support as indispensable as
the air. We are a great community that I am proud of. Take care of
