INTRODUCTION

If you are reading this guide you will probably be one of the guys who will soon be

participating in a European and international exchange project in the city of

Naples.

What you are going to read is a guide written by the volunteers of the Erasmus

Student Association Naples (ESA Naples), designed to give you some basic insights

and tips before you arrive in Naples.

We wrote it through the erasmus students feedbacks of recent years, sampling

some of the most frequently asked questions that were being posed periodically.

This is the ENGLISH version of our guide.

If you want the ITALIAN or the SPANISH version, you can contact us at our mail,

facebook page or you can view it in ITALIAN and SPANISH versions directly

on our platform.

We suggest you read it all.

We are confident that this guide will help you on more than one occasion.

Erasmus Student Association Naples (ESA Naples) is a no-profit Association

composed by neapolitan students who have decided to offer free support and

assistance to all the erasmus and the international students who will arrive in

Naples.

We want to make your erasmus period here in Naples as good as possible,

helping you understand the mindset that has always characterized Naples (and

the Neapolitans) in Italy and in the world!

We will organize a variety of activities, from parties to guided city tours in

Naples, in order to make your erasmus more complete and unforgettable as

possible.

The ESA CARD is the service card that will allow you to take part to the many

activities of our association and it will offer you benefits in all our commercial

partners!

The card costs 10 € and it has annual validity, an risible cost, which is immediately

amortized by participating at one of our activity or taking benefict or discounts

from one with all our commercial partners!

The card is personal and untransferable.

In the early moments in Naples the excitement could leave space to

disorientation. DON'T BE AFRAID! It's all normal!

In this section, meeting all your needs, we will advise you on a possible "modus

operandi", so that you can make your first moments in Naples easier in order to

avoid bad experiences (due to scams or unnecessary extra costs) or to not

forget to do something extremely important.

F.A.Q. ACCOMODATION

• Is it normal for the homeowner to ask 1 or maximum 2 monthly payments plus a

one-month bail? Can I trust him?

✓ Usually there is no need to be worry. For some time now it has become a

consolidated practice

• My homeowner has not issued any lease, is it normal?

✓ Of course not. This is an illegal practice that we do not recommend you to

accept. These types of "black" contracts provide very few guarantees to the

renters, they can evict you at any time without notice and without any money

restitution. It has often happened that some erasmus students have had a lot

of problems with their homeowners as a result of some home party. In addition,

a valid signed contract reduces the possibility that some intermediary may

receive percentages from your rent, paying more.

• I have been a while here and I don’t find any single available rooms, what can I do

it?

✓ Naples is experiencing a period of crazy tourist expansion. Many homeowners

have decided to maximize profits by making their properties into B&Bs. Single

rooms begin to become more difficult to find and their price is increasing

constantly. Our advice? You can organize groups with your friends and rent

double rooms. The best quality-price choice, not to mention that the erasmus

experience will benefit only.

First steps in the city

F.A.Q. ACCOMODATION

• Is it difficult to find a room in Naples?

✓ Absolutely not, don’t be afraid. We don’t advise you to contact intermediaries

(people who want to find a home for you) or real estate agencies. They would

show you more expensive deals than you might find even alone.

• What are the price ranges for the various bids?

✓ In the Historic Center of Naples all offers are very similar. Single room: 250/300

€/month, bills not included. Double room: 200/250 €/month, bills not included.

Obviously this is a simplification. This will not prevent you from finding rooms at

lower prices (or higher, and in that case you should let them lgo).

• In which area do you recommend to live?

✓ We suggest you to live in Old Town for few reasons: the most of the city's

university centers are concentrated in that area, the cost of living is lower than

in other parts of the city, the most of international and university nightlife is

held in this area and it is well connected with the rest of the city. If your

university headquarters is located in Fuorigrotta or Capua, we don’t advise you

to live in those areas because those ones alive only during the day and in the

evening you may not enjoy youth gathering points as you would find them at Old

Town. You would spend more time at home during the night, isolated, than taking

public transport to get your university every morning.

• Further advice

✓ We suggest you to check the conditions of furniture and appliances. It often

happens that homeowners reuse disused furniture and appliances from their

respective homes to use it in the properties they offer to the students. Always

check if the appliances work well and about the furniture don’t give a

superficial look, drawers and cabinets may seem in good condition, but then

verify that they can be damaged inside.

It is a tax identification document. It consists of an alphanumeric sequence of 16

numbers.

Once you arrive in Naples, we recommend you to go immediately to the

International Relations Office of your University and complete the "Certificate

of attendance" in the "Arrival" box and send it by fax or mail to your university's

erasmus office. Below there are the addresses of the various Erasmus offices

of the various universities.

FEDERICO II

The University of studies Federico II is a public university among the most ancient

in Italy.

It was founded on the 5th of July 1224 by the Emperor of the Holy Roman

Empire and by the King of Sicily Federico the II , it is the principal academy in

Naples and it is one of the most important in Italy and Europe. It is famous as

the most ancient University founded through a public measure, it is considered

as the most ancient non-clerical and public University.

The departments and faculties are located between the historical center, the hill

area and the flegrea area. humanities departments such as languages, law,

history exc. are located in historical buildings in the city center at very short

distance from Garibaldi square. Engineering, economy and mathematics

departments are in the fuorigrotta district and can be reached with the

underground line 2.

The University of studies of Naples “L’Orientale” is the main public University, in

Italy, specialised in the study and the research of the linguistic and cultural

realities of Europe, Asia, Africa and America.

Founded in 1732, L’Orientale nowadays is the most ancient school of sinology and

Oriental studies in the European Continent.

The University of studies of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli” (Until November 2016 it

was known as Second University of studies of Naples, acronym SUN) it was

founded in 1991, with the purpose of decongesting the University “Federico II” and

soon it gained prestige, becoming one of the main universities in Campania. The

University is structured with different located in different areas of the province

of Caserta.

The University of studies “Suor Orsola Benincasa” is an academic institution

partially public of Naples, specialised in humanities, founded in 1895, located in the

monastic complex, wanted by the nun Orsola Benincasa.

Currently this University is one of the four free non-public universities of the

South of Italy, and it includes in the entire span of the educational institutions,

starting from primary school to University.

The cultural activities, the specialization courses, the conferences and seminaries,

travelling exhibition, the activities additional to the didactic of the University, the

Museum and the promotion of its own rich artistic heritage are some of its

characteristics signs.

The University of studies “Parthenope” is a public University founded in 1919.

In Campania it is the University that historically is specialized in Economy and

Sciences of sailing, but lately it invested mostly in courses related to technology.

It inherited the faculty of motor sciences after ISEF in Naples closed. the

ACCADEMIA DI BELLE ARTI

The Accademia di Belle Arti in Naples, whose headquarters are located in the

San Lorenzo district, is a university institution for high artistic education

Born as "Royal Academy of Design", it is one of the oldest European academies

that saw the passage of many painters, thus becoming a point of reference for

the Neapolitan painting of the nineteenth century.

The Academy of Naples hosts about 25,000 students, and is open to

international journalists as well. The new university dimension and the extension of

the addresses is leading to a further expansion of the number of students.

The Academy of Naples puts the ambitious goal of forming new pictures of the

production of the image in short, not only in the broad spectrum of figurative

arts, but also in terms of creativity applied to the use of New media, graphics,

design, restoration of cultural heritage and art teaching.

The academy is also home to a library, a gypsum plaster, and a museum gallery.

The international airport of ‘’Capodichino’’ is the largest in southern Italy.

It is only 4 km from the center of Naples.

Another way of getting to the center of Naples is Alibus. Alibus connects

Capodichino International Airport with the central train station of Garibaldi

square and the sea station of Municipio square

The service works every day, including holidays, every 20 minutes. The cost of the

ticket is 4 € and it can be bought on board. The ride takes about 20 minutes

from Garibaldi square and 30 minutes from Municipio square.

The first departure is at 06:00 AM.

The last departure is around 23:30 PM.

Other public transportation to get to the center of Naples are the bus line 14

and 3S. The cost of the ticket is € 1.10 and it can be bought in tobacconists,

newsagents or specialty retailers.

Nocturnal public transport to the airport is provided by line 449.

Aeroporto a parte, vi sono altri due modi per arrivare in città: tramite bus o treno. Il

loro punto di arrivo in città è rappresentato dalla Stazione Centrale di Piazza

Garibaldi.

GARIBALDI SQUARE

Piazza Garibaldi è una piazza di Napoli situata a limite dei quartieri Pendino, Mercato,

San Lorenzo e Vicaria. È una delle piazze più importanti e affollate della città in

quanto dal 1866 si affaccia su di essa la stazione Napoli centrale (terza in Italia per

traffico passeggeri).

FIUMICINO EXPRESS

In recent years many erasmus have preferred to use this bus line to get to Naples

from Rome. Although this service is rather lowcost, often rates (which change

according to reservations and according to season) may be cheaper. However, we

recommend it.

The minimum promotional price from Fiumicino/Ciampino Airport(Roma) to Piazza

Garibaldi (Naples) is 5€.

CENTRAL RAILWAY STATION

A big part of the whole station is occupied by the train station. You can not see it.

Inside, there are many direct connections to the various lines of the Metro Line 1, Line

2 and Circumvesuviana. For further information, please refer to the metro section of

this guide.

That’s one of the most incredible contents. We can assume that you won’t have

your own mean of transport, so you will use the public transport. What if you

would use the taxi service? What is the cost? What do you have to avoid?

In those years few Erasmus students actually understood how does the taxi

service work in Naples. We are going to explain it, with the official attachment of

HOW DOES THE PREVIOUS TABLE WORK?

The PREARRANGED RATES, on prearranged ways both urbans and extra-urbans,

INCLUDE every supplementary addition (to/from the airport, nocturnal way, nonworking

day, luggages, animals, radio call). The rates are valid for THE WHOLE DAY

during WORKING AND NON-WORKING DAYS.

The application of the prearranged rates indicated on the rate table HAS TO BE

REQUIRED by the USER at the START OF THE ROUTE WITHOUT THE POSSIBILITY

OF REFUSAL by the driver, who MUST, before the departure, give a duly completed

receipt indicating the route chosen by the user and the amount settled in the rate

table.

This service does not activate the use of the taximeter (taximeter off). The

prearranged rate is applied for the total number of the passengers on the taxi.

The rate table, both in Italian and English, must be displayed visibly on the front of

the car's seatback to allow the user to freely choose one of the two rate systems

before the start of the route.

Full history and intense city, Naples was founded about 3000 years ago as

Partenope by Turkish and Greek merchants. Subsequently, the settlement took the

name of Paleopolis (old city) and in 475 B.C. it became Neapolis, the new city. In the

various phases of foreign rule, the City developed and grew to become the capital

of the most important pre-unification States: the Kingdom of the two Sicilies. The

Bourbons, which at that time reigned over the Kingdom, built a magnificent palace

in Caserta and filled the city with historical buildings of all kinds.

The historic centre of Naples, with its

splendid palaces and popular districts, is

currently part of the world heritage

protected by UNESCO. In addition to its

famous views that can be seen from

different locations of the centre, Naples

also boasts an underground city.

MUSEO MADRE

This is the Museum of

contemporary art in Naples,

according to his own title. If you

want to know a creative and

artistically active Naples, you

should go to the Madre. The

permanent collection, on the first

floor, is a rich collection of retrospectives also by local artists. On the second floor,

there is another permanent collection, which traces the artistic and political events

from the 50 's to today. But why Madre (mother)? It comes from the name of the

building where it is located, Donnaregina, near the Naples Cathedral, where San

Gennaro’s treasure glitters.

VIA S.AN GREGORIO ARMENO

This narrow street puts the spotlight on the

Nativity scene, crowded with tourists and

locals. Walking along Via San Gregorio

Armeno you will be struck by the amount

of figurines of Nativity scenes that are

manufactured by skilled craftsmen. Obviously, this street becomes even more

popular and busy at Christmas time!

RETTIFILO

The Rettifilo, whose "official“ name is Corso

Umberto I, is one of the main streets of Naples,

from Piazza Garibaldi central station it leads to

the city centre, not far from via Toledo. The 1.3-

kilometer-long street, provides access to many

attractions of Naples: in fact, along this route there is via Duomo which leads to the

narrow streets of the historical centre and to the Cathedral of Santa Maria

Assunta, known by everyone simply as the Duomo of San Gennaro, and to the

University of Naples Federico II. By the way the main attraction of the Rettifilo is

shopping. Along the entire length of the street, in fact, you will encounter many

shops, with affordable prices and with an assortment that includes famous brands,

Italian and international, and many outlets of chains with worldwide distribution (by

Spanish Italian Benetton and Zara at Stefanel).

SANSEVERO CHAPEL MUSEUM

The mysterious Sansevero Chapel Museum is

an important piece of Italian heritage and is

located in the historic centre of Naples.

Here you can see the famous sculpture of

the veiled Christ by Giuseppe Sanmartino,

carved in 1753 and dazzling example of the

talent of this artist.

PIAZZA BELLINI

Located in the historical centre of Naples,

Piazza Vincenzo Bellini has always

represented its intellectual heart. Over

time it has also become one of the main

meeting points of the youth of Naples,

because many bars and clubs are open

until late, where you can spend a quiet

evening or drink something with friends. Recently it has become one of the point of

reference of the international community in Naples.

BASILICA OF SANTA CHIARA

The Basilica of Santa Chiara is an interesting Provencal

Gothic style building, established in the 14th century. In the

same pole -one of the most important monastic poles of

the city- you can also visit the archaeological museum and

the monastery.

GESÙ NUOVO CHURCH

The lavish interior of this church, with the

magic marble walls and the adorned altars

with intricate inlays and stones such as

agate, amethyst and lapis lazuli, are a

spectacle not to be missed. The Church is

located just outside of the historic center of

Naples, in the square.

SPACCANAPOLI STREET

Spaccanapoli is the most famous street

of the city, it is so called because it literally

divides the city in two parts from the

Spanish quarters up to Forcella. On the

way there are important buildings of

great architectural value like the Church

of Santa Maria, the Church of San

Francesco delle Monache, Palazzo Venezia,

Palazzo di Sangro and Palazzo Marigliano. In Piazza San Gaetano you can go down

from the street level to discover the mysteries of the Naples underground.

SPANISH QUARTERS

The quarters were built around the 16th

century in order to accommodate Spanish

military garrisons. The area is now a core

of historical artistic importance of the city.

Here you can experience the Naples

popular culture and lifestyle, thanks to the presence of small craft shops, or

"bassi Napoletani", or small and dark alleys characterized by tall staircases and

clothes hung out to dry between the buildings.

CASTEL NUOVO

This medieval castle, starting

from 1279, was an important

cultural centre during the

Bourbon period. Castel Nuovo, it

has been used several times as

a temporary residence to host

famous people who went to Naples, Royal Court’ guests or on official visit. It has

hosted artists and writers such as Giotto, Petrarca and Boccaccio and papal

authority as Pope Boniface VIII and Pope Celestine V. Today the castle hosts

numerous cultural events and exhibitions.

BOURBON TUNNEL

It hostes the underground tunnels of

Naples, remained secret for centuries.

More than 500 meters and covered

for 150 years, the Bourbon Gallery

hides many legends and stories. It has

been recently renovated for this

reason, at present, visiting this

attraction is an experience not to be

missed!

VIA TOLEDO OR VIA ROMA

Let's start with a preamble: via Toledo

and via Roma is the same street! Via

Roma is the name that the road took in

the aftermath of the annexation of

Rome to the Italian State; the name

later changed in via Toledo, recovering

the original name of the street (it is dedicated to the viceroy Pedro de Toledo).

Today via Toledo, connecting Piazza Dante to Piazza Trieste e Trento, a few steps

from Piazza del Plebiscito and the Royal Palace, is mainly a commercial street. It is

easily accessible and it is a pedestrian area. This is a significant feature in a city

always chaotic like Naples. Along via Toledo you can find shops for all budgets:

unlike the Riviera di Chiaia, shopping here is for everyone. Even if there is no

shortage of high fashion boutiques, the majority of shops sell young brands which

are famous but cheap.

ROYAL PALACE

It was for a long time the residence of

the Spanish viceroy. The Royal

gardens surrounding the Palace are

constituted by tree-lined avenues,

including rare plants, statues and

secret gardens. Inside It is also

possible to visit the San Carlo Theatre, the National Library of Naples and it

hosts the headquarters of the regional tourist office. .

SAN CARLO THEATRE

You could almost think that this theatre

has never been touched, the beautiful

gold and red curtains will transport you

between the splendour of yesteryear.

This theatre was built in 1737 and is still

one of the pivotal opera houses, in fact

you can assist to representations or simply visit the building leaded by a guide.

PIAZZA PLEBISCITO

Piazza Plebiscito is positioned at the end of

via Toledo, before entering in the quarter

of Santa Lucia. The square is one of the

symbols of Naples as well as one of the

largest of the city and of Italy which is why

it is the most widely used for large events. Around the square there are

important buildings such as the Basilica of San Francesco di Paola, the Palazzo

Reale, the Palazzo della Prefettura and Palazzo Salerno.

SANTA LUCIA

The quarter of Santa Lucia is one of

the historical districts of Naples.

Considered among the most beautiful

and evocative of the city. It is located

in the district of San Ferdinando

continuing along the via di Santa Lucia where there is the sanctuary of Santa

Lucia a Mare, dating from the 9th century. The charm of this place on the Gulf

of Naples was made famous through the centuries by singers, painters and

storytellers.

CASTEL DELL’OVO

Castel dell ' Ovo is the oldest Castle

in the city. The fortress dates back

to the 12th century and overlooks

the Neapolitan seafront.The curious

name comes from the legendary

Roman poet Virgil who said that the

castle walls were fortified against external attacks using magic eggs kept in the

dungeon.

SEAFRONT VIA CARACCIOLO

Via Caracciolo is a long and wide

promenade that, flanking Villa Comunale

park and Riviera di Chiaia, is part of the

city seafront. Its name derive from the

admiral Francesco Caracciolo, hero of the

Parthenopean republic hanged by the admiral Nelson and thrown into the waters

of the gulf of Naples. Provided with wide sidewalks and partially walkable, it

offers panoramic views all over the city and over the Vomero and the Posillipo

hills, and it’s walked both by the Neapolitans and the tourists crowing the city.

Along via Caracciolo, you can see some of the attractions: for example, you can

reach the port of Mergellina, where are docked both the hydrofoils - bringing to

the islands of the Gulf - and all of the tourists’ boats. The promenade will give you

also an ample view over the elegant buildings overlooking the Gulf, with the

gardens and the trees of the Villa Comunale and the Dohrn aquarium, the oldest

in Europe.

CHIAIA

Chiaia district, between Vomero, Fuorigrotta, San

Ferdinando and Posillipo, overlooks the Gulf of Naples.

In the past, before the urbanization of the Vomero, it

was a suburban area, a kind of fisherman’s village.

During Charles II’s reign, it was adorned with trees, plants and fountains, a kind of

garden outside the walls of the city. Today it’s crossed by Corso Vittorio

Emanuele, one of the most important streets in Naples with the Villa Comunale,

once Villa Reale with the Cassa Armonica and the oldest aquarium in Europe, the

Casina Pompeiana and many churches.

MERGELLINA

Mergellina is one of the greatest and

most romantic areas in Naples: it

overlooks the Gulf, with the amazing

mount Vesuvius on the left and, on

the horizon, the silhouettes of Capri

and the Phlegraean Islands. The area,

part of the district of Chiaia, is one of the most iconic images of Naples, capable

of traveling all around the world and have a place in the collective consciousness

regarding the city of Naples. And it could not be otherwise, since Mergellina

encloses both the ancient and the modern charm of the city. Composed of two

different streets, via Caracciolo and via Partenope, it overlooks the Gulf and it’s

located at the foot of the Posillipo hill, one of the most iconic areas of the city.

From the port, hydrofoils and ferries leave everyday to reach the islands of

Capri, Ischia and Procida.

VOMERO

The hill called “Vomero” is a residential area

developed starting from the 19th century.

Today the ancient art déco villas are

placed side by side with modern buildings

and the district is one of the most

refined (and expensive) areas in the city. Villa Floridiana is a great park offering

an amazing panoramic Gulf view. Piazza Vanvitelli - with a circular shape - is the

heart of the district: there starts the walkable area, a pleasant promenade with

several cafés and shops. On the top of the hill Castel Sant’Elmo, a 16th century

majestic fortress, hosts the Museum and the Certosa di San Martino, and offers

other amazing panoramic views of Naples and its Gulf.

VIA ALESSANDRO SCARLATTI

Via Alessandro Scarlatti, one of the

fundamental streets of the Vomero district, is

considered one of the shopping street of the

city together with the near via Luca Giordano.

The street is refined and its buildings were built in Umbertino style.

CHARTERHOUSE OF SAN MARTINO

The Certosa di San Martino, placed on the

top of the Vomero, is an ancient monastery.

During the the second half of the 19th

century, it became a museum. Incredible

example of the Baroque art, the Certosa is surrounded by gardens and a

panoramic view point. It hosts inside, in a well planned itinerary, all of the evidences

of the history of Naples, without alter the religious origin of the monastery.

VIA PETRARCA

Via Petrarca is one of the greatest panoramic

streets of the city: it seems like you can take a

plunge into the sea and brush the Vesuvius. The

itinerary connects the port of Mergellina and the

great Posillipo district, with its views on the historical houses. To visit at the sunset!

POSILLIPO

Posillipo is a hilly residential district of the city,

connected to the seafront of Mergellina through

the panoramic streets of via Petrarca and via

Posillipo. The area already appears in the historical

sources of the ancient Greeks, the first ones inhabiting the promontory then

completely covered with rocks and trees. There are Roman ruins near the shores

and close to the highest point of the hill. On the tip of Capo Posillipo, there is the

Parco Sommerso di Gaiola, which extends to the port of Marechiaro: the two

most famous corners of the city where you can enjoy the pure waters of the

Gulf of Naples.

FUORIGROTTA

Fuorigrotta is a suburban district in the

western area of Naples and it’s the most

populated district in the city. Despite its

moderate extension, Fuorigrotta is the center

of the Neapolitan fair and sport life, as well as the main location for concerts and

conferences. Among the main sports facilities, there are the Stadio San Paolo -

the third largest in Italy, scene of the competitions of SSC Napoli - and the Piscina

Felice Scandone, the main swimming and water polo facility in the city, which also

hosts Posillipo's and the Canottieri Napoli’s matches, two of the most popular

water polo teams in the world. The area also hosts several university and

scientific institutes such as the faculties of Engineering, Economics, Chemistry,

Physics and Mathematics at Federico II University of Naples, the CNR and, in

particular, the Istituto Motori and the Institute of Combustion Research.

The Gaiola beach is one of the most

beautiful and famous in Naples. The park

is divided into two areas the marine

protected area, which can be accessed

Since the beach is very small, we recommend going as soon as possible to find a place to

lie down, on hot days it could be particularly crowded.

HOW TO REACH IT FROM THE HISTORICAL CENTER?

You can take metro line 2 from the "Cavour" station, direction Pozzuoli, get off at the

"Mergellina" stop, from there reach the "Bruno-Sannazzaro" bus stop and take the

"140" bus line to Capo Posillipo. Once you get off the bus, just go down the slope

"Coroglio - Istituto Denza" at the end of which you will find the beach. Click here to see

MARECHIARO

Marechiaro is also located in the Posillipo

area. On the site there is a very famous

tuff rock, now considered one of the most

evocative places in Naples where you can

swim.

To arrive on the rock there will be a fishing boat in the area that will accompany you for

only € 5, but access to the rock is limited. On the place there are also kiosks where you

can also rent sunbeds.


You can take the underground line 2 from the "Cavour" station, direction Pozzuoli, get

off at the "Mergellina" stop, from there reach the bus stop "Bruno-Sannazzaro" and

take the bus line "140" and get off at "Discesa Coroglio - Clear sea". Once you get off

the bus just take the "Via Marechiaro" at the end of which you will find access to the

PENISOLA SORRENTINA: IERANTO

The Bay of Ieranto is located in the Sorrento

peninsula, at the end of a suggestive trail

surrounded by nature and the view of the

fantastic clear sea of Sorrento. To reach the

bay you have to go to Massa Lubrense, in

the hamlet of Nerano, near Sorrento.

Since the beach is very small and at the end of a distance of 4 km, we recommend that

you take comfortable shoes and go as soon as possible to find a place to lie down, as it

is very popular and on hot days it could be particularly crowded.


You can take the Circumvesuviana line from the "Napoli P.zza Garibaldi" station, direction

"Sorrento", get off at the "Sorrento" stop, from there reach the "SITA" bus stop and

take the line towards Nerano. Once you get to the Nerano stop the start of the route

will be near the bus stop. At the end of the path you will find the beach. Click here to

SORRENTO:

REGINA GIOVANNA BATHS

In Sorrento, exactly in Capo Sorrento,

present a fascinating uncontaminated

basin, between nature and sea stands a

cliff that has become one of the most

important archaeological sites of the

peninsula.


You can take the Circumvesuviana line from the "Napoli P.zza Garibaldi" station, direction

"Sorrento", get off at the "Sorrento" stop, from there reach the "SITA" bus stop and

take the line towards Capo Sorrento. Once you get off at the Capo Sorrento stop the

start of the route will be near the bus stop. At the end of the path you will find the

CAUTIOUSNESS ABOUT SOME AREAS

In the past few years Naples improved a lot as a city, especially for what

concerns security. Nevertheless it still is a big metropolitan city, some episodes of

criminality are still on. Despite this…there is no need to be afraid! This section

aims to warn you, to avoid you some bad experiences during your stay in Naples.

Usually, you just have to have your eyes wide open and avoid unconscious behavior

to enjoy the full city experience.

Thieves and robbers hit foreign citizens especially, perhaps by recognizing them

by their way talking to each other.

Here there are some valuable tips:

• It is good practice not to carry all the documents or large amounts of money.

Remember: Naples is a very cheap city and most often just bring a

photocopy of a valid document!

• Do not wear jewelery accessories that are too flashy and expensive. We also

recommend you to limit the use of expensive smartphones in public, especially

at night (iPhone 7, Samsung S8 etc ... etc ...). If you have a secondary

smartphone it is good to use it.

• Be careful about your belongings and remember to close your bags,

backpacks and suitcases, always. This will reduce the "temptation" to the

potential criminal.

• It is important to denounce immediately any abuse or crime to the competent

authorities, such as the police or carabinieri. In many cases their intervention,

especially in recent years, has proved useful and effective. Do not be

discouraged!

These are some areas in which is better to pay attention:

GARIBALDI SQUARE

If you come to Naples by train you will arrive to the station of Piazza Garibaldi. As

all stations of big cities, it is not the best place for an international student or for

a tourist, even though recently there are more controls. In here we suggest not to

walk showing expensive objects such as: Rolex, golden necklaces, valuable earrings

and so on. Do not trust of abusive taxi drivers and street traders (they sell i-

pads and phones), do not be tricked by the tables where you can play with the

three cards. The famous “pacco napoletano” (ndt it is a way in which Neapolitan

define something that tricks you) was born here. Apart from this things, you

should not have any problem during the day, in the past few years it is more and

more controlled by security.

MUSEO (PIAZZA CAVOUR)

During the day is a very touristy area. There are no problem in walking here

during the day. Unfortunately this cannot be said of the night hours, during those

times not many people walk there, making it an area not really safe.

QUARTIERI SPAGNOLI

In the past few years they improved a lot. In these alleys there are many

restaurants appreciated by the tourists because of their traditional food and

cheap prices. Nevertheless we suggest not to go too deep in these alleys,

especially at night. It is better to stay in the first 100/200 metres, close to the

main street via Roma/via Toledo.

In Naples you can eat very good stuff and for cheap prices!

It is not hard to have a full lunch in a restaurant for just 15€,

or some great street food for less than 2€.

So the best thing to do is to recommend you some places where you can eat the

best traditional Neapolitan food!

PIZZA MARGHERITA

The pizza margherita is the typical

Neapolitan pizza, with tomato,

mozzarella (in the traditional pizza it

is not used the mozzarella of bufala

but fior di latte) fresh basil, salt, oil.

Together with pizza marinara is the

most popular Italian pizza.

It represents the symbol of the Italian culinary heritage, known in the whole

world in all of its varieties.

One spread belief claims that in the June of 1889, in honor of the Queen of Italy,

Margherita of Savoy, the chef Raffaele Esposito of the pizzeria Brand made

up a dish that he called Pizza Margherita (the term pizza was then unknown

outside of Naples, and it was used to point a sweet dish) where the salty

toppings that he used tomato, mozzarella and basil represented the colors of

the Italian flag.

According to recent studies though, the story of the pizza Margherita made

by “Brandi” for the first time would be an historic false. It seems that the Pizza

Margherita has been in Naples before 1889, but around 1796 and 1810.

FRIED PIZZA

This dish shows the creativity of the

Neapolitan people during times of crises. At

the end of the Second World War the city

lacked of everything. Even pizza had become

a luxury: to make it was necessary a wood

burning oven, tomatoes and mozzarella that

were not easy to find, and therefore

expensive.

It was necessary something easy to cook for those who wanted to sell, and cheap

for those who wanted to buy it. That’s why it is known as the “poor sister of the

oven pizza”.

That’s how the Neapolitan invented the “fried pizza” also known as the pizza of

the people, since it was sold by women in the streets, to earn something after the

war.

WALLET PIZZA

The pizza a portafoglio (“wallet

pizza”) is a pizza of smaller

dimensions, its name comes from the

fact that it can be folded as a wallet

on itself (rarely it is called leaflets

pizza). In Naples it is sold in pizzerias,

bakeries, confectioneries, and it is an

icon of street food in Naples. It is

perfect to calm a sudden attack of

hunger!

PASTA WITH POTATOES

The Neapolitan pasta and potatoes is a

traditional dish eaten during the winter in

Naples. It is hot and comforting, it is easy to

cook with some simple and cheap ingredients,

but it is a healthy and tasty dish.

The pasta is cooked together with the

potatoes, becoming creamy and tasty thanks

to the parmigiano cheese used during the

preparation . and to the provola that gives

smoked flavour.

FRITTATINA DI PASTA

The Frittatina di pasta is a must of the street

food, there are different varietes both for the

toppings and fillings. In all of the food frie

shops, rôtisserie and all of the bars are shown

next to the tipical fried pizzas and other

neapolintan food. Careful not to mistake it for

the Frittata di maccheroni, that is made

with leftovers of pasta, eggs that is usually eaten in small trips.

The frittatina di pasta is another matter.

The frittatina di pasta is made with besciamella, meat, peas, mozzarella and

covered in pastella. This is the basic recipe. Also in this case there are different

varietes: the thing in common among all of those is the type of pasta, always in a

long shape, the bucatini are the most popular. The frittatine di pasta are just

made in pastella.

When you find them with breadcrumbs is because the besciamella is not thick

enough, while the secret is thick besciamella.

Fun fact: a tale says that Pulcinella was sad since he could never make frittatine,

because in his house there were never leftovers of pasta.

MUSSEL SOUP

The Mussel soup eaten of Thrusday

before Easter is a traditional dish that in

Naples, but not only, has its roots in a

tradition that the legend brings back to the

Borbone. The tale wants that Ferdinando di

Borbone, a monarch that loved fish and sea

food, was reproched by the priest

Gregorio Maria Rocco, that told him not to eat too much fish in the week

before Easter. However the King, not to give up on his beloved mussels had

them served, but with a less fancy preparation.

At the table of the King was served a soup ot tomato and peppers. A simple

dish, but delicious. The news was spread quickly and since that day everyone

followed the idea of the king, eating this delicious soup.

BEER WITH TARALLI

Taralli’s have different varieties

according to the area of production. It

is a ring of not risen paste cooked in

the oven. The mixture is made of flour,

water, wine, oil and salt. Sometimes

there are also other ingredients to

make it more tasty, like pepper.

It is perfect to eat them with a frozen beer.

WHERE TO EAT IT?

There is not a best place, but we recommend you to go to one of the sellers on

the seafront.

TRIPE

The tripe (the etymology is uncertain,

maybe it comes from French and

English, related to the Gaelic tarp

“pile”) it is offal used in gastronomy

and made with different part of

bovine stomach, and not as many

believe with the intestine. The tripe is

a dish that was eaten already during

the time of the Greeks, they used to barbecue it, while the Romans used to

make sausages of it. Today the tripe is a traditional dish in many regions in Italy,

nowadays it is sold already washed and partially cooked.

SFOGLIATELLA

RICCIA AND FROLLA

Sfogliatella is a traditional sweet of

Campania, it has two different varietes: it

can be riccia if it is made with flaky pastry

or frolla if made with shortbread..

Sfogliatella was born in XVIII century in the conservatory of Santa Rosa da

Lima, in Salerno. It was born almost by accident, some bran and instead of

throwing it away it was added dried fruit, sugar and limoncello, creating a filling.

It was used some flacky pastry to cover the filling and the was cooked into the

oven. The sweet became famous in the area with the name of Santarosa, in

honour of the Saint to whom was dedicated the convent. In 1818 the

confectioner Pasquale Pinaturo got the secret recepy and brought the sweet in

Naples, changing a bit the recipe.

BABÀ

The Babà or Babbà is a sweet cooked

in the oven made by risen pastry and

brewer’s yeast. Its diameter is of 5-7

cm up until 35-40 cm. It can also be

found split in halves and filled with

chocolate or cream.

Babà comes from a sweet that has his origin in Poland (babka ponczowa); it was

used by French cooks and got the name of baba, in Naples it then became

Babbà.

The invention of the babbà takes origin at the time of the Polish King Stanislao

Leszczyński, father in law of Luigi XV of France; Leszczyński liked to cook but

since he was toothless, he couldn’t eat sweets loke gugelhupf, from Alsazia,

because it was too dry. He decided to make it softer thanks to Tokaj and syrup.

The usual shape of it is long, thanks to the confectioner Nicals Stohrer who

arrived in Paris with Maria Leszczyńska, daughter of the Polish King. It can still

be found today in France.

FIOCCO DI NEVE

The snowflakes are small sweets

extremely popular right now in Naples,

they have been created by the

confectionery Poppella, in the Sanità, and

it is a small brioche filled with milk cream,

ricotta and cream.

They are so good that other confectioneries recreated them, calling them

“nuvola” (cloud).

RAGÙ

Ragù is a word used to indicate a sauce

made of meat (cooked for many hours

with a low flame). This sauce is made of

different ingredients that change from

region to region. There are also ragus

of fish or tofu.

Often ragus are used to give flavour to pasta or pies.

The etymology of the word has its origin in the French word ragout, that comes

from ragouter meaning “to work up an apetite” and originally it was used to

indicate dishes of meat with a lot of spices that was then used with different

kinds of food, in Italy pasta.
