Siddharth Pico Raghavan Iyer, better known as Pico Iyer, has written more 

than a dozen books and his work has been translated into more than 20 

languages. Born in Oxford, England to Indian parents, Iyer has travelled nearly 

constantly for more than 70% of his life. Yet one place had eluded his vast and 

comprehensive list of destinations: Antarctica. Traveling aboard Silver Cloud 

in January 2020, Mr. Iyer crossed the White Continent off his list, a destination 

that he will not soon cross off his memories.

HIDDEN BALI THROUGH 

3 HUMBLE PLATES

On the profoundly spiritual island of Bali, one where visitors quickly learn that 

food plays a crucial symbolic role in daily life and ceremonies, a day called 

Nyepi is particularly special. Otherwise known as the ‘Day of Silence’ for the 

largely Hindu population, it demands 24 hours of silence and meditation – 

including no internet access – as well as fasting by all able-bodied adults. 

Consequently, no food had passed the lips of millions of Balinese for an entire 

day, so by the time this visitor arrived and the fast had just been broken, the 

island’s glorious culinary kaleidoscope of flavours, colours, textures, aromas 

and ingredients were being appreciated even more enthusiastically than usual.

KING OF THE TIDES: 

THE SALTWATER CROCODILE OF 

AUSTRALIA’S HUNTER RIVER

A pair of beady eyes breaks the water’s surface, as the warm tropical air gently 

pushes waves against the green mangroves. It’s difficult to ignore the butterflies 

in my stomach when the Zodiac moves closer to these huge reptiles in the wild, 

which can grow up to 20 feet (6 meters) long. Slowly, the piercing eyes return to 

the depths of the Hunter River in Australia’s remote Kimberley region, offering 

little clue as to where they’ll pop up next. 

The Hunter River, or “Yirinni” as it is known to the Wunambal Gaambera people 

of Western Australia, is a 20 mile long (30 kilometers long) stretch of bottlegreen 

water that teems with ancient Aboriginal rock art sites and an abundance 

of wildlife. Accordingly, it’s one of the best places to see these saltwater 

crocodiles in action. “They are a feature of the Kimberley,” says Silversea 

Expedition Expert Malcolm Turner. “Nearly every guest on a Kimberley cruise 

sees one. The more you are out looking, the greater the chance of seeing them.”
