CONCERT INFORMATION
Dear LSO family,
MAHLER 4 ..............................................10-13
During this season when we are only able to fit
a small percentage of our orchestra onstage due
to the constraints of physical distancing, LSO has
made the commitment to continue to pay every
musician their full salary, even though they can’t
all fit onstage. Your annual fund support will
allow us to honor this commitment. Below are
comments from a few musicians about how much
this means to them:
• “LSO’s commitment to and support of our
family of musicians has been a cornerstone of the
organization. Nothing shows this better than the
incredible step that LSO has taken in paying all
the musicians this year. It is such a beautiful thing
- it brings tears to my eyes to think of what this
means for us all.”
• “Kudos to LSO (and especially to LSO’s loyal
donors) for making sure LSO is in a financially
secure position to be able to do this. You guys
blow us away.”

• “During this trying and stressful time for everyone, we’re so grateful for LSO’s support. It is
truly remarkable.”
• “I LOVE this orchestra!! I am so grateful to LSO for making such an effort to keep all our
musicians employed. We really appreciate it.”
• “It means so much to me that our symphony family is really looking out for its musicians. In
an age where arts organizations are really struggling, I love that LSO is so worried about our
musicians’ well-being. Thank you so much!”
• “This isn’t only about compensation; it sends us a message that our community values the
arts and values us and wants to see us get through this pandemic. It’s been hard on us not
playing together; it chips away at the essence of who we are. And when this pandemic is over,
we will be bursting with joy to get on that stage and share our gifts with you.”

EDWARD POLOCHICK, MUSIC DIRECTOR
Edward Polochick, Music Director of Lincoln's
Symphony Orchestra since 1998, has expanded
LSO’s music series through innovative classical
music programs, family concerts, pops concerts,
and July 4th events like the Uncle Sam Jam.
For 31 years, he served as Artistic Director of
Concert Artists of Baltimore, an all-professional
chamber orchestra and vocal ensemble of eighty
musicians which he founded in 1987. Maestro
Polochick served on the faculty of the Peabody
Conservatory of Music in Baltimore from 1979
to 2020 in a multitude of conducting positions
including Associate Conductor of Orchestras,
Director of Choral Ensembles, and Opera
Conductor. Not only is he widely recognized as
a conductor, but is an award-winning pianist
and harpsichordist and regularly conducts from
the keyboard with Concert Artists, the Baltimore
Symphony Orchestra, and Lincoln’s Symphony
Orchestra. He has also appeared as piano soloist
with the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Los
Angeles Chamber Orchestra under the direction of
Sir Neville Marriner.
Since winning the first Leopold Stokowski
Conducting Award in 1978 and, as a result,
conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra, he
continues to attract world-wide attention as
an orchestral, choral, and operatic conductor.
In addition to conducting the Philadelphia and
Baltimore Symphony Orchestras, his guest
appearances include the Houston Symphony,
Chautauqua Symphony, the Opera Company
of Philadelphia, Omaha Symphony, Jacksonville
Symphony, Charleston (SC) Symphony
Orchestra, Aalborg Symphony (Denmark),
Daejeon Philharmonic (South Korea), St.
2
From 1979-1999, Mr. Polochick was on the
conducting staff of the Baltimore Symphony
Orchestra as Director of the Symphony Chorus,
founder and director of the Baltimore Symphony
Chorus Chamber Singers, and frequent guest
conductor. During his tenure with the BSO, he
established annual Holiday Pops and Messiah
performances which have remained Baltimore
holiday traditions for nearly three decades. In the
summer of 1987, Mr. Polochick was conductor
of the Musicisti Americani Summer Festival
in Sulmona, Italy. In the autumn of that same
year, he conducted the Peabody Symphony
Orchestra in Moscow, the first appearance of
an American student orchestra in the Soviet
Union. In recognition of the Moscow tour,
Mr. Polochick received an ASCAP Award for
Adventurous Programming of American Music.
In 2000, Mr. Polochick received the Peggy and
Yale Gordon Achievement Award and was made
an honorary member of the Baltimore Music Club.
Two years later, he was awarded the coveted
Johns Hopkins University Distinguished Alumnus
Award. In 2004, he was named Baldwin Scholar at
the University of Notre Dame of Maryland where
he held lectures, demonstrations, and panels on
the creative act of music. He was awarded the
‘Keys to the City’ by Lincoln’s Mayor Coleen Seng
in 2007, and in 2010 received a commission
from Nebraska Governor David Heineman as an
Admiral in the Nebraska Navy. In 2011, he was
the only American to serve as an adjudicator for
the Rosa Ponselle International Vocal Competition
in Caiazzo, Italy.
Mr. Polochick is frequently asked to share his
knowledge and love of music at various lecture
series, adjudications, and radio broadcasts. Each
year renowned broadcaster, Marc Steiner, invites
him to co-host his radio program in Baltimore,
celebrating music of the holiday season. He is
also a regular panelist on Face the Music, a radio
review program of recordings hosted by Jonathan
Palevsky of WBJC-FM, Baltimore. For nearly two
decades, he and Mr. Palevsky have been cohosting
WBJC’s annual Christmas Program.
Although Mr. Polochick resides in Baltimore, he
considers Lincoln to be his second home. On each
visit he contributes to the community through
LSO’s public performances, school visits,
workshops, master classes, and other educational
activities, making classical music accessible to
everyone in Lincoln.

CLASSICAL MAHLER 4
ESTHER HEIDEMAN, SOPRANO
“Angelic” is the word most often used to
describe the silvery, pure, sweet tone of Esther
Heideman’s voice. A winner of the Metropolitan
Opera National Council Auditions and the
Lucia Albanese Competition, Esther Heideman
continues to impress audiences around the
world with her dynamic stage presence. Ms.
Heideman has even been described as having
Stradivarius vocal cords.
Esther took her first voice lesson when she
was 18 and already attending college. Her
passion for performing emerged quickly, and
she has dedicated her life to it ever since. In
2001, she made her Metropolitan Opera debut
singing Pamina in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte.
That performance was immediately followed
by her debut with the New York Philharmonic,
and her European debut with the Prague Radio
Symphony.
Ms. Heideman's career began with the
Minnesota Orchestra, where she sang in more
than 20 concerts. She moved to NYC and the
very next day received word she was scheduled
to make her Carnegie Hall debut, singing
Handel’s Messiah. Since this time, she has
performed with major orchestras throughout
the world, such as the Baltimore Symphony,
Pittsburgh Symphony, St. Louis Symphony,
Atlanta Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, Saint
Paul Chamber Orchestra, Philadelphia Pops,
Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra, Beijing New
Music Ensemble, Chicago Symphony Orchestra,
Aspen Music Festival, Virginia Symphony
Orchestra, Jacksonville Symphony, National
Philharmonic, Buffalo Philharmonic, Milwaukee
Symphony, Cincinnati Symphony, Seattle
Symphony, Boston Baroque, Amsterdam
Symphony Orchestra, Orquestra Simfònica del
Gran Teatre del Liceu, the U.S. Naval Academy,
and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra.
In addition to performing the staples of traditional
concert repertoire, such as Beethoven’s
Symphony No. 9, Mahler’s Symphony No 4,
Mozart's C minor Mass, Handel's Messiah
and Orff's Carmina Burana, Esther Heideman
has featured prominently in the premieres of
some of today's most respected contemporary
composers. These have included the role of
Jenny Lind in Libby Larsen’s opera Barnum’s
Bird, Sister Angelica in The Three Hermits by
Stephen Paulus, Madame V in Casanova by
Daniel Schnyder, The Revelation of St. John by
Daniel Schnyder, and Deus Passus by Wolfgang
Rihm. Ms. Heideman also performs regularly
with the Aspen Contemporary Ensemble, and
has sung works by Szymanowski, Schoenberg,
Essa-Pekka Salonen, Perrera, Druckman, Ravel,
Delage, and Albert, to name a few.
Upcoming performances include Roberto
Sierra’s Sephardic Songs with the Aspen Music
Festival, Thomas Beveridge’s Yizkor Requiem
with the New Dominion Chorale, and an Irish
concert with the George Mason University
Choir. When not performing, Ms. Heideman
enjoys teaching lessons and master classes
and sharing her knowledge and experience
with young performers.
MAHLER: SYMPHONY 4
Founded in 1918, Arnold Schoenberg’s Verein
für musikalische Privataufführungen (Society
for Private Musical Performances) was created
as an organization to promote modern works
to select audiences within Vienna. Tired by
the consumerism of music that was occurring
at the time, Schoenberg sought to create
an environment where chamber ensembles
could perform twentieth century works in a
new light. With a tight budget and limited
resources, the group (mainly consisting of
Schoenberg’s pupils) began arranging modern
works for piano, duets, and trios for private
performances. However, in 1920 with the
addition of Erwin Stein to the Society, the
ensemble began to embark on larger chamber
ensemble arrangements for performance, one
of which was Mahler’s Symphony no. 4.
In line with these aims, the Society’s gravitation
for performing arranged compositions stemmed
from a variety of reasons: 1) smaller forces within
11
MAHLER 4 CLASSICAL
chamber ensembles were easier to manage
from a practical and financial standpoint, 2)
a chamber ensemble could present a ‘clearer’
presentation of the music, paring down the
orchestral forces to merely the essential
elements, and 3) the task of arranging such
works proved to be a wonderful pedagogical
exercise for members within the organization.
While Schoenberg’s oeuvre featured a variety
of arranged and composed works for chamber
ensembles (including his infamous Pierrot
Lunaire), the particular instrumentation used by
the Verein for their later chamber arrangements
was modeled from the ‘salon orchestras of the
day.’ This instrumentation generally included
harmonium, piano, strings, and featured winds,
with the occasional addition of percussion. Parts
were usually performed by members within the
Society, prepared through extensive rehearsals
and score study.
Begun in the fall of 1920, Stein’s arrangement
of Mahler’s Symphony no. 4 was an ambitious
project. In a letter to Schoenberg, Stein
articulates the following in his process of
arranging the work: “The arrangement appears
to be quite good. I have deliberately set some of
it quite adventurously in order to try out different
possibilities; also much of this succeeded well;
e.g., the low trumpet fanfare after the climax
before the recapitulation was brought off
excellently by the flute.”
While the exact reasoning for choosing
the work as an arrangement project is not
documented within the Society, Schoenberg
did admire the chamber-like quality in many
of Mahler’s symphonies. Symphony no. 4 was
especially suited for arrangement, as it excluded
trombones or tuba, was substantially shorter
in length, and featured several soloistic traits.
Since the original score of the Stein arrangement
was lost, in 1990 the Britten Estate and Marion
Thorpe (née Stein) commissioned Alexander
Platt to reconstruct the work from an annotated
full score marked by Stein. Three years later, the
work was published under Josef Weinberger,
premiering in the following months at Wigmore
Hall, London. While there are some objections to
the work’s pure ‘realization,’ the reconstruction
does provide a more tangible depiction of Stein’s
creative process and design.
As one of the larger arrangements completed
within the Verein, Stein’s reconstructed version
follows similar orchestration trends of the
Society. Scored for flute (dbl. piccolo), oboe
(dbl. cor anglais), clarinet in A/Bb/C (dbl. bass
clarinet), percussion (sleigh bells, suspended
cymbal, glockenspiel, bass drum, tam-tam,
triangle), harmonium, piano (2 players), strings,
and soprano solo, Stein’s work attempts to mimic
Mahler’s original ‘core’ orchestration, with a
few exceptions. In this, bassoon, horn, trumpet,
timpani, and harp are eliminated from the
scoring, adding in two pianos and a harmonium
to fill out the missing textures and harmonies.
The addition of harmonium (a free reed,
keyboard instrument) to the arrangements has
also been a point of discussion. With financial
constraints and limited availability to personnel,
the harmonium provided a new timbral pallet
and a comparable range of notes to cover
instruments not present in the arrangements.
At the turn of the century, harmoniums were
also more common, especially in Vienna. For
the Society, the use of harmonium was an
experiment, with the Mahler arrangement being
one of the first test pilots. Stein’s correspondence
on November 13, 1920 to Schoenberg offers
further insight: “Your harmonium is in my
room…It is certainly protected here than in the
Nibelungengasse, and I can try it out better for
its dynamics, solo and liveliness for the chamber
orchestra arrangements. I have encouraged
all who are making arrangements to look at
the harmonium. Besides the Orchestral Songs
assigned by you (which I have discussed with the
young people in detail and which I will discuss
with them once again on the basis of their first
attempt), some Mahler Songs, Hiller Variations,
Debussy…and the 4th Mahler Symphony are in
progress. I am in the midst of the 2nd movement;
the parts of the first are copied. Instrumentation:
fl, ob, cl, harm, pa. 2 hds, string quintet. I have
omitted the bassoon because the bass tones
of the harmonium are more applicable even in
more lively passages.”
Stein’s arrangement of the Mahler was heard
at three Verein concerts occurring on January
10, 20, and 23 in 1921. Due to illnesses and
schedules of various performers, personnel
varied from concert to concert. Despite such
difficulties, however, the arrangement and
concerts were considered an overall success.
This year marks the 100th anniversary in which
the work was first performed.

TRANSLATION:
Das himmlische Leben
(aus Des Knaben Wunderhorn)
Wir genießen die himmlischen Freuden,
D'rum tun wir das Irdische meiden.
Kein weltlich' Getümmel
Hört man nicht im Himmel!
Lebt alles in sanftester Ruh'.
Wir führen ein englisches Leben
Sind dennoch ganz lustig daneben;
Wir tanzen und springen,
Wir hüpfen und singen,
Sankt Peter im Himmel sieht zu.
Johannes das Lämmlein auslasset,
Der Metzger Herodes d'rauf passet.
Wir führen ein geduldig's,
Unschuldig's, geduldig's,
Ein liebliches Lämmlein zu Tod.
Sankt Lucas den Ochsen tät schlachten
Ohn' einig's Bedenken und Achten.
Der Wein kost' kein Heller
Im himmlischen Keller;
Die Englein, die backen das Brot.
Gut' Kräuter von allerhand Arten,
Die wachsen im himmlischen Garten,
Gut' Spargel, Fisolen
Und was wir nur wollen.
Ganze Schüsseln voll sind uns bereit!
Gut' Äpfel, gut' Birn' und gut' Trauben;
Die Gärtner, die alles erlauben.
Willst Rehbock, willst Hasen,
Auf offener Straßen
Sie laufen herbei!
Sollt' ein Fasttag etwa kommen,
Alle Fische gleich mit Freuden angeschwommen!
Dort läuft schon Sankt Peter
Mit Netz und mit Köder
Zum himmlischen Weiher hinein.[note 1]
Sankt Martha die Köchin muß sein.
Kein' Musik ist ja nicht auf Erden,
Die unsrer verglichen kann werden.
Elftausend Jungfrauen
Zu tanzen sich trauen.
Sankt Ursula selbst dazu lacht.
Kein' Musik ist ja nicht auf Erden,
Die unsrer verglichen kann werden.
Cäcilia mit ihren Verwandten
Sind treffliche Hofmusikanten!
Die englischen Stimmen
Ermuntern die Sinnen,
Daß alles für Freuden erwacht.
The Heavenly Life
(from Des Knaben Wunderhorn)
We enjoy heavenly pleasures
and therefore avoid earthly ones.
No worldly tumult
is to be heard in heaven.
All live in greatest peace.
We lead angelic lives,
yet have a merry time of it besides.
We dance and we spring,
We skip and we sing.
Saint Peter in heaven looks on.
John lets the lambkin out,
and Herod the Butcher lies in wait for it.
We lead a patient,
an innocent, patient,
dear little lamb to its death.
Saint Luke slaughters the ox
without any thought or concern.
Wine doesn't cost a penny
in the heavenly cellars;
The angels bake the bread.
Good greens of every sort
grow in the heavenly vegetable patch,
good asparagus, string beans,
and whatever we want.
Whole dishfuls are set for us!
Good apples, good pears and good grapes,
and gardeners who allow everything!
If you want roebuck or hare,
on the public streets
they come running right up.
Should a fast day come along,
all the fishes at once come swimming with joy
There goes Saint Peter running
with his net and his bait
to the heavenly pond.
Saint Martha must be the cook.
There is just no music on earth
that can compare to ours.
Even the eleven thousand virgins
venture to dance,
and Saint Ursula herself has to laugh.
There is just no music on earth
that can compare to ours.
Cecilia and all her relations
make excellent court musicians.
The angelic voices
gladden our senses,
so that all awaken for joy.

MEET THE MUSICIANS
LINDSAY WILEY, OBOE
What advice do you have for someone who
wants to learn your instrument?
Make sure to get private lessons! Oboe
is tough but really rewarding if you have
someone to guide you from the beginning.
Also, reed-making is something you will likely
experience if you play it through high school
and definitely beyond!
Tell us about your pre-concert routine.
I LOVE to go eat pho, which is a Vietnamese
noodle soup, a few hours before a concert.
Gets the brain functioning and centers me for
optimum focus. I also like to seclude myself
from others and run the music through my
head instead of practicing with the oboe.
What orchestral work have you never
performed live, but have always wanted to?
I would absolutely love to perform Mahler’s
Das Lied von der Erde. It has beautiful
woodwind lines, especially for oboe and
English horn.
What is your favorite popular artist, band, or
genre?
Radiohead has to be one of if not my favorite
non-classical artist out there. So many it’s
hard to choose, and I love lots of artists from
lots of genres, so not sure I can pick one
genre—but old-school hip hop is definitely up
there!
Tell us about your favorite memory from
working with LSO.
I had the opportunity to perform Respighi’s
Pines of Rome on English horn, which has a
super cool solo in the final movement I got to
perform with my LSO family a few years ago.
It was magic!!!
KIMBERLY BEASLEY, HORN
What advice do you have for someone who
wants to learn your instrument?
Music should be fun. Horn should be fun. Treat
the horn as an extension of yourself and
sing through it in whatever fashion speaks
to you. It can be hard work too, but each
breakthrough in skills opens a new world of
musical experiences.
Tell us about your pre-concert routine.
My pre-concert routine is easy: 1. Put the horn
together. 2. Blow a couple notes through the
little end to be sure sound comes out the big
end. 3. Head for the stage, but don’t forget the
music in your case.
What orchestral work have you never
performed live, but have always wanted to?
Mendelssohn’s Third Symphony. Fun horn
parts, fun everything parts … it just makes me
happy.
Tell us about your favorite memory from
working with LSO.
I absolutely love this orchestra, so almost
every opportunity to play with LSO becomes
a favorite memory. I'll pick two instead. One
was a concert at St. Paul's. The program
featured a bunch of beautiful solo/melody
lines doubled between principal cello and
3rd horn (thank you composers!), and I got to
soloistically blend with the cello sound much
of the evening—very satisfying. The other
was a Halloween concert several years ago.
I got to dress up in my mother's wedding
dress and "process" every time I entered or
left stage as if walking down the aisle. Making
Ed Polochick crack up and almost lose it as
he looked back and realized he was cueing a
bride was worth the effort. Seeing my dad's
reaction to his daughter wearing his wife's
wedding dress on stage was priceless too.

MEET THE MUSICIANS
ELIZABETH GRUNIN, CELLO
What advice do you have for someone who
wants to learn your instrument?
Get a good teacher, someone who will do a very
thorough job with posture and arm placement.
Tell us about your pre-concert routine.
Before the concert I check my clock about five
thousand times to make sure I am on time, and
panic about maybe getting the time wrong, and
worry about a time change. I call my stand partner
to check the call time, and other times, she calls me.
I eat a light snack, usually a banana.
If you could play any other instrument in the
orchestra, what would it be and why?
I would play the harp. It is such a magical
instrument.
What orchestral work have you never performed
live, but have always wanted to?
I would like to play Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana or
Verdi’s Aida.
When you’re not practicing, what do you do in
your spare time?
I teach music at my studio, give online lectures, knit
shawls, swim, and take my dogs and cat on walks.
.
LINDA CALVERT, VIOLIN
How long have you played your instrument?
I started playing the violin in 5th grade and
joined the LSO in 12th grade. This is my 49th
year with the LSO.
If you could play any other instrument in the
orchestra, what would it be and why?
When I was very young, I wanted to play
percussion (like my big brother) or flute.
My mother wanted me to play violin for 2
reasons: 1) they will need more violinists than
percussionists or flutes, and 2) she insisted
it be a small instrument because she was
tired of helping load and unload my brother’s
drums.
When you’re not practicing, what do you do
in your spare time?
My background includes human resources,
real estate, and property management. I
spend a great amount of time restoring and
landscaping my 1940 home.
CHUNYANG WANG, BASS
How long have you played your instrument?
22 years. Fun fact, I’m the third generation to play
the bass in my family.
When you’re not practicing, what do you do in
your spare time?
I enjoy cooking a lot, and spending time with my
wife, Anne, and daughter, Zoe.
What advice do you have for someone who
wants to learn your instrument?
Have a big car and be OK with random people
asking you if you had wished to play the piccolo!
What is your favorite popular artist, band, or
genre?
I love going back to my favorite bands from high
school—Green Day and Linkin Park—and I also
really enjoy artists like Imogen Heap and Halsey.
Tell us about your favorite memory from working
with LSO.
I would have to say last year’s Russian Dances. I
love Shostakovich, so getting to play the Chamber
Symphony for the first time WITH added dancers
was awesome!

For $100/person ($200/couple), you can help support the work
that LSO does onstage and in the community.
Sign up today, and the perk of membership is that you’re invited to select
one home party to attend during the year. Each of the parties is an afterwork
gathering of friends, hosted by LSO supporters. Enjoy wine, snacks,
and the company of others who love LSO. Maestro Polochick and one of our
musicians will give a short musical performance, and LSO Executive Director
Barbara Zach Lee will distribute LSO’s annual report and give a brief update
