Dining outdoors is one of the

pleasures that comes with warmer

weather. If you've ever enjoyed a

delicious meal on an outdoor terrace

or spent a fun evening with family and

friends at a barbecue, you'll know how

fun it is to enjoy a meal outdoors. The

good news is, you don’t have to spend

a fortune to turn your own outdoor

space into the kind of terrace a

restaurant would be proud of.

Brighten Up Your Furniture

If you have a sturdy table and chairs

that would benefit from a quick

sprucing up, then why not put your

DIY skills to use and get out the

paintbrushes? Some skilful painting

using bright colours is an affordable

but effective way of creating the

perfect focal point for your outdoor

dining area. Whether you enjoy a large

garden or a small patio, a beautiful

table and chairs could make all the

Adding accessories can be an easy

way of turning any space into one you

can't wait to spend some time in.

Don't consign the cushions, blankets,

and candles to indoors only - they can

also look great outdoors. Bring some

of your style into the mix with some

statement pieces that add colour and

texture to your outdoor space. Scented

candles add a beautiful aroma and

perfect mood lighting as the sun sets;

while bright and cosy blankets will

keep the chill away as the sun goes

Say It With Flowers

No outdoor dining space would be

complete without some beautiful plants

and flowers – it is outside, after all!

From trailing leaves to beautifully

scented blooms, the right flora can set

the scene while also adding some

wonderful scents to your space. If you

are working with a small space, then

the addition of some plant pots, or

even a beautiful vase of your favourite

flowers is enough to add a stylish and

pretty touch.

Dress For Success

Table linen does not have to be solely

for the indoors. If you love a crisp

tablecloth, then why not adorn your

outdoor dining table with some

beautiful fabric? Whether you prefer it

to be bright and bold, or subtle and

rustic, a tablecloth can take your table

to the next level. The same goes for

your cutlery and tableware. To take

your outdoor dining to the next level,

why not choose some cutlery, plates,

and glassware that remind you of your

perfect Mediterranean escape?

Don't Forget The Floor

Whether you enjoy a decked outdoor

space, or you love nothing more than

feeling the grass between your toes,

the ground beneath your feet is an

important part of your outdoor dining

experience. If you have the space,

why not consider an outdoor rug?

Designed with practicality and style in

mind, a rug can add a personal and

unique touch to any outside eating

Whatever your budget, there are

plenty of options out there to help you

to transform your outdoor space into

your own personal dining terrace.

You'll be eating al fresco every day!

Gin is extremely popular and gains more and more interest with each passing year. New brands become

available very regularly. Gin’s basic flavour is from juniper berries and the making of gins dates from the

Middle Ages. Many different styles of gins are available today, including very aromatic and flavoured

productions. Gin cocktails also prove to be increasing in popularity and Gin & Tonic (long-standing

favourite), Singapore Sling, plus Tom Collins and many others, are further, favourite concoctions,

regularly enjoyed.

The award-winning LAVA Spirits Co offers signature productions to an excellent standard. COFFEE GIN,

plus COFFEE ORANGE GIN are both produced utilising South American Arabica coffee beans to great

advantage. Laura Bridge, the company’s founder became inspired, then dedicated and committed to

create flavoured gins of an exceptional quality.

COFFEE GIN (37.5% vol) is a premium London Dry Gin that is complemented with the finest South

American Arabica coffee. A splendid aroma greets the nasal senses and then the mouth’s pleasures

enjoy the rich, balanced flavours of coffee and gin.

COFFEE ORANGE GIN (37.5% vol) World Gin Awards – 2021 – Best English Flavoured Gin, again, is a

premium London Dry Gin, which pairs with the finest South American Arabica coffee, perfectly.

Fresh orange zest is the addition for this production. Enticingly appealing on the nose, the mouthfeel and

palate sensation are duly rewarded with the effect that follows. I understand this to be a UK first, with

the combination of flavours, for this gin, working extremely well indeed. The fresh flavour of roasted

coffee beans, complemented with a sweet citrus addition from the orange zest, makes a very

impressive creation.

The LAVA Spirits Co sources and blends the finest ingredients to produce these

outstanding, flavoured gins, which can be enjoyed neat, with ice and/or mixer,

as well as in the creation of fabulous cocktails.

Free UK delivery, plus offers and discounts are available to ‘LAVA Lovers’.

Orders are processed and dispatched quickly and efficiently.

Goose on the Loose

“Mrs Goose at Home”

We are based on a farm in picturesque rural Shropshire, and host

small intimate affairs in our stunning dining room & gardens for

up to 30 guests. If you are looking for imaginative catering for a

private feasting affair, fine dining, or a special birthday

experience, we can provide everything you need here where the

house is yours exclusively.

Made in Shropshire is a collaboration of

artists, designer-makers and food producers

who live and/or work in Shropshire.

The Made in Shropshire group came into existence in

2005 as a collaboration between Women in Rural

Enterprise (WiRE) and the Shropshire Rural Hub as a

way of developing a marketplace for small, unique art,

craft and food businesses in Shropshire.

An open meeting was held on 18 August 2005 at which

there were 30 local producers. It was decided

unanimously to give the monthly markets a try and

thus on 23 September 2005, the first Made in

Shropshire market was held in The Square,

Shrewsbury. Initially nurtured and linked to the

Shropshire Rural Hub the group formed its own

management committee and becoming a formal

membership organisation in May 2007.

The membership selection process ensures a diverse

range of quality, skilfully crafted, creative products

made in the lovely county of Shropshire.

Unique designer/maker businesses represent the

following - blacksmithing, ceramics, clothing, fine art

painting, furniture and upholstery, fused and blown

glass, jewellery, leatherwork, photography, wirework,

wood (turned and sculptural).

Since then the group has successfully attended past

events such as the West Midlands Show, the

Shrewsbury Flower Show and monthly markets in

On the food side Made in Shropshire members offer

fresh farm meat, pork pies, scotch eggs, salami, pizza

and pasties, fresh baked breads and cakes, fudge and

chocolates, jams and chutneys, apple juice and

Shropshire gin plus skin care and garden plants.

This last year has been particularly difficult for all

small businesses and, after a lot of false starts, the

members were back in action at the Shrewsbury Town

Square market in April.

With social distancing measures in place almost 40

different makers, artists and producers can attend the

market. Why not pop along and see what there is on

offer? Entry is free!

Nearly 16 years on, the group is continuing to flourish

and evolve. Made in Shropshire members regularly

showcase their products at their flagship monthly

market in The Square, Shrewsbury (2nd Saturday of

the month).

Membership currently stands at 46 and over 100

small, local businesses have been given the

opportunity to showcase their goods in a prime retail

location over the years.

The Group has benefited from the generosity of local

accountants Whittingham Riddell, the Shrewsbury

Branch of NFU Mutual, Shropshire County Council

and Shrewsbury & Atcham Borough Council.

Please check our social media feeds on the

day as the fair may be cancelled if further

restrictions or adverse weather are expected.

After working in the

Summer is just around the corner, and with a new

season comes new trends: from fashion to culture,

from music to beauty, soon summer styles will be

gracing the media everywhere. With the pandemic

and the normalisation of mask-wearing, winter trends

focused heavily on eye makeup and eyebrows. In

contrast, sun-kissed skin and natural glows have been

a hit each and every summer. So what can we expect

this summer for our beauty trends?

The Fresh Faced Feel

Summer brings heat, and there is no worse feeling than

heavy makeup mixing with beads of sweat and creating

blotches on the surface of the skin. This summer, try a

lighter foundation that barely looks like it’s there at all. Your

skin will feel light and be able to breathe in the summer air,

all the while looking flawlessly fresh-faced.

Eyes On The Prize

The emphasis of eye makeup from wintertime is being carried

into the summer season. Throughout many lockdowns,

we saw people getting extra creative with eye makeup as

they became the main focus of the face due to the wearing

of face coverings. Colourful eye shadows, rainbow-hued

eyeliner and highlighting the inner corner of the eye will

draw only the best attention to the eyes. Yellow is the colour

for this summer, so add a splash of sunshine to the lids and

you’re good to go.

Bold Brows

Since Cara Delevigne took over the fashion world in the

2010s, brows have been growing both in size and demand.

The feather brow is having its day, with many makeup

brands selling products specifically to plump the eyebrow

and add a bushy texture to the fine hair. Although the shape

of the brow still appears to be of importance, the fine line

brow in the 2000s is long gone. Think bigger and bushier,

the better.

Luscious Lips

Shades of lip pigmentation are on a constant rotation, and

sometimes it is hard to keep up with what’s hot and what’s

not. One thing for sure this summer is that lip gloss is in.

With the revival of Y2K fashion (2020 saw the reintroduction

of low rise jeans and crop tops), beauty trends have also

followed suit. Lipgloss gives your lips an extra plump and

shine and can be put over any shade of lipstick, matte or

Bashful Blush

Blusher has been ditched in the past, with the focus instead

on extreme contouring to illuminate cheekbones and jawlines.

This summer, however, rosy cheeks are making a

come back. Lightly blushed cheeks give the make-up-free

look the perfect touch, giving the face a natural warmth and

glow. Paired with dramatic colourful eyeshadow, big brows,

plump lips and flawless skin, the perfect summer look is at

the tips of our fingers.

Lessons from Lockdown

My philosophy is based on the Shamanic principle that

everything in life is either a lesson or a blessing and that has

certainly been put to the test over the past 12 months. Like

many small businesses in Shropshire, I have been forced to

close my doors during lockdown, at a time when holistic

therapies could offer the opportunity for deep human

connection, therapeutic touch and a space to find peace &

harmony in a chaotic and uncertain world.

Initially, I was called to return to my nursing role within the

NHS which kept me busy and gave me a sense of being able

to help, serving the people of Shropshire.

However, as time went on, it became so apparent that the

nurses too were struggling with the increased pressure,

workload and unprecedented working conditions. The

system responded rapidly, but the “new “ way of working was

indeed taking its toll on the staff.

You see nurses are not the superheroes the public like to

portray – we are simply hard working , honest & caring

humans trained to do a job and deal with whatever is thrown

at us. We experience the same fear, confusion, stress and

anxiety as you, but when we put that uniform on we step

into the role of the healthcare professional and set to work.

On one particular shift, I arrived on duty to find a member

of staff sitting alone, tears streaming down her face. She was

suffering from panic attacks, we talked about breathing

techniques and after a few minutes she returned to her

work, ever the consummate professional.

At that moment I realised I need to do something more to

help the staff. With such a unique skill set, I am in a fortunate

position as an experienced Senior Nurse, but also a qualified

holistic therapist, trained in conscious connected

breathwork, reflexology, reiki, mindfulness & meditation.

With contacts in the University, I approached the Course

Director of nursing and offered my help. Due to lockdown

restrictions I decided that I would produce a short film to be

delivered to the Student Nurses. This 15 minute film was

produced by a local company and totally funded by Barefoot

The content included a short guided meditation for their

own personal use. I explored resilience, breathing

techniques to use when feeling overwhelmed or stressed

and grounding techniques to empower the nurse to feel

embodied and connected during their day.

I feel truly honoured to serve as a nurse, but more so to be

able to bridge the gap between holistic therapies and

conventional medicine, to offer support to my junior

colleagues at a time when they most needed it.

During my days as a student nurse, I had never even heard

of mindful practice & holistic therapies were definitely not

I trained as a holistic practitioner to care for my own physical,

mental & emotional health as I personally suffered from

burnout in my nursing job. I maintained my nursing skills

and registration and today I combine running a successful

holistic therapies business with working locum shifts in our

local Urgent Care Centre.

Humans are hardwired for physical touch, for human

interaction, for connection and when we strip all the material

stuff away, how resilient are we? What is really important in

life ?

Gratitude for blending my two worlds together, conventional

medicine meets holistic health & wellbeing with a deeper

fusion of compassion, love & understanding .

What an opportunity to shift the focus towards self-care and

truly holistic health & wellbeing!

I'm Amanda Dalley

Reiki Practitioner and

Certified Angel Guide

Are you feeling stressed,

anxious, tired?

Have you ever thought of

giving reiki a try but are

of what it is?

Reiki is an alternative therapy that can help reduce

pain, improve sleep and general wellbeing.

It helps restore balance between mind, body and soul

giving you a relaxed and less stressed feeling

This is achieved by a series of hand movements above

the body where the practitioner becomes a channel for

all the positive energy to enter the client.

In the hectic world we live in maybe it's time to give

ourselves some "me" time and give reiki and it's

benefits a try.

I also offer Guided Angel Healing Sessions.

‘Feel good through beauty!’

Everyone needs a bit of positivity!

The last 12 months has been a challenging time for most of us.

We have lost so much and adapted to so many changes. It has

been hard not to feel low or depressed with so much happening

all around us. But happiness IS still POSSIBLE.

Happiness is not just available when everything is going well,

happiness is possible everyday if we start to notice the good

things we have in our lives and feel grateful for them.

Now it may sound corny but happy people realise that happiness

is a choice. They are not held hostage by their circumstances and

they do not seek happiness in other people or possessions… but

simply knowing happiness is a choice is not enough, fully experiencing

it still requires a conscious decision everyday.

I believe the secret to this is being mindful, being present in each

moment and living IN THE NOW! So much of our unhappiness

and misery stems from either dwelling in the past or projecting

all our worries and fear about the future.

The reality is that we can do nothing about the past except heal

our old wounds, we can not rewrite history or change the past,

therefore to live there is pointless.

We can plan and prepare for our future but to worry about

events that have not happened and may never happen only robs

us of our joy in the present.

We need to learn to trust ourselves and the outcome and to

focus only on what we can change or influence… and that can

only ever be in the present moment!

To be happy is to stay IN THE NOW, taking our attention to the

very moment we are living in, in this moment we have POWER

because we can make things happen!

We have no power

over the past or the

I used to suffer from extreme anxiety and anxiety

is the fear of the future! It is the fear that we will

not be able to cope with what might happen to us,

a fear that we can not control the outcome.

We become so overwhelmed with all the things we

perceive may happen that we lose sight of what is

actually occurring RIGHT NOW! Once we realise

that ourPOWER lies within us at this very moment

we feel less anxious.

This moment, right now, is a gift…

thats why they call it the PRESENT!

I healed my anxiety with a combination of healing

therapies but a big part of this was learning to be

mindful and present in the now! To keep all my

attention on this very moment that I was

experiencing, where I could make changes, where

I had power.

I found a very helpful book all about this called

really helped me to practice this everyday. This

amazing little book helped me to transform my

thinking, it showed me how to focus on myself in

this very moment and at the time that was life

changing for me.

The key to happiness does not exist ‘out there’, it is

not in a relationship, or a new job, or in money or

another country…. The key to happiness is within

you! Right now you can choose to see the positives

in your situation. No matter how small there is

always something to be grateful for.

Gratitude is actually the fastest way to

replace anxiety with happiness.

Just stop for a minute and imagine you are a homeless person.

You have nothing. You have no safe home, no warm bed, no car, no money.

Just imagine how that would feel, waking up everyday cold and hungry with

nowhere to go.

Now bring yourself back to your current situation and ask yourself what are

you grateful for? What do you have RIGHT NOW that others would be

grateful for.

We often take so much in our lives for granted, we miss the gifts we

already have.

I was talking to a friend the other day and she was feeling quite down about

the size of her legs, with summer on the way she had returned to the

familiar of feeling of dreading the warmer weather because she would have

to show her legs to people and it really bothers her….. she then she turned

the page of the magazine she was reading and there was an article from a

lady who had lost her legs in an accident, she had struggled to cope with

the tragedy but was now living life to the full as much as she could with NO

My friend immediately stopped in her tracks and exclaimed “at least i have

legs!!!” and just like that her perspective changed and she suddenly realised

how petty it seemed to worry about things like the size of her legs when

there were people who had found a way to be happy without any! She was

suddenly grateful for her legs… no matter what size they are!

Being grateful for what we already have not only leads to increased

happiness but also always leads to more abundance. When we start to

notice the good in our life, no matter how small, it tends to attract more.

This is because the world works via vibrations. Everything that is energy

has a vibration and we are all energy! Changing our thoughts changes our

When we change our thoughts, we change our emotions and our

vibration. This has a measurable chemical effect on our bodies and our

minds. This is the study of Metaphysics and Quantum Physics.

When we change our thoughts we change our programming, we literally rewire our

minds and this in turn changes our perception of life. When we focus all of our

attention on what we DO HAVE and not what we LACK, we move from ‘not enough’

to ‘gratitude and abundance’ and we automatically attract more of that to us.

If you look outside of yourself for fulfilment you will never be truly happy because

you can neither influence or control the circumstances outside of yourself and you

also always have the fear that it can be taken away. True inner happiness that

comes from the gratitude of everything you have and everything you are can never

be taken away from you. It is your birthright.

So be grateful, be positive, choose to see the good in things… that's where

happiness lives!

Feeling anxious? Why taking a

big deep breath isn’t the answer

Take a big deep breath’, we’ve

all heard that phrase before,

often from people telling us it

can help us if we feel stressed or

anxious, maybe even in a yoga

class, this phrase has definitely

escaped my mouth in the past.

But whilst it can feel good in the

short term, it doesn’t actually

help in the long term and here’s

Breathing is an automatic

function which you might not

pay much attention to but there’s

quite a bit of chemistry going on

and the signal to breathe actually

comes from chemoreceptors in

the brain monitoring the amount

of carbon dioxide (CO2) we have

in our bodies and not by the

amount of oxygen (O2) we have.

Having the right amount of CO2

in the body actually helps your

cells absorb O2 more efficiently.

If we breathe heavily and above

our metabolic needs we disrupt

the chemical balance and get rid

of too much CO2. Blood vessels

start to constrict so we end up

with reduced blood flow to

muscles, tissues and organs,

enhancing feelings of anxiety and

creating a sense of

lightheadedness. Blood flow to

the brain can reduce by 40%

which in turn impairs cognitive

function, it’s no wonder anxiety

can be crippling! And with the

last year of lockdown’s and

restrictions, many of us are

feeling more anxious than ever.

Some breathwork practices use

overbreathing or

hyperventilating such as the Wim

Hof Method and can be useful

when done in a controlled,

conscious way, almost like a reset

button for the nervous system.

The problem is that quite often

it’s occurring in everyday life

without us even realising

therefore creating dysfunctional

breathing patterns. So what can

we do about it? Here are a few

ways that can help:

1) Breathe through your nose.

When we breathe through our

nose we create another gas

called nitric oxide, this is a

vasodilator so it opens up blood

vessels and can help us absorb

18% more oxygen than mouth

2) Take slower breaths.

Instead of breathing quickly,

make the breath much slower,

aim for at least 5 seconds if not

longer for each part of the

breath. Resonant or coherent

breathing where the heart and

brain are in coherence is 5.5

3) Breathe low.

When we breathe high up in the

chest we activate the

sympathetic nervous system

(fight or flight) but when we keep

the chest still and breathe more

towards the bottom of the ribs

and into the abdomen also

known as diaphragmatic

breathing we activate the

parasympathetic nervous system

(rest and digest). There is also

more blood in the lower lobes of

the lungs which means that by

breathing this way we also

transfer more oxygen into the

4) Breathe light.

Instead of inhaling a large

amount of air forcefully, imagine

that the air is a delicate thread

that you are gently drawing in,

this prevents overbreathing.

5) Make the exhale longer.

Instead of keeping both inhale

and exhale equal in length,

breathe out for a slightly longer

time, maybe try 4 counts to

breathe in and 6 counts to

breathe out. This means that we

develop a higher tolerance of

CO2 allowing it to remain in the

lungs a bit longer, further

enhancing the transference of

oxygen into the body.

So the next time you are feeling

that familiar sense of anxiety

creeping in, bring some

awareness to your breath, close

your mouth, breathe light, slow

and low and see if it makes a

difference. Maybe even take a

few minutes each morning and at

points throughout the day just to

practice so that it becomes more

of a habit.

Tickets Now Live for Shropshire Tasty Trail

Shropshire Festivals have

released tickets for an event that

mixes locally produced food and

drink with an 8-mile walk near

Shrewsbury on May 23, 2021.

The Shropshire Tasty Trail aims to

leave muddy footprints not carbon

footprints with organisers sourcing

food and drink locally to keep food

miles to a minimum. The 8-mile walk

will include three stop-offs, where

walkers will enjoy a different course.

The event was originally planned for

May 2020 but was unable to go ahead

during the pandemic. Current Covid

guidelines will allow the event to go

ahead in May this year – however the

previous route with indoor stop-offs

has been exchanged for a fully

outdoor, Covid safe option, with the

trail now starting at Upton Magna

Village Hall car park.

The trail is limited to 600 places, which

will need to be registered for in

Beth Heath, Director of Fun at

Shropshire Festivals, reveals what to

expect from the Shropshire Tasty Trail,

“Come on a journey you won’t forget!

If you love walking in the great

outdoors, socialising with loved ones,

eating and drinking delicious produce

and supporting local businesses, then

this event is perfect for you!

“Walkers will embark on an 8-mile trail

that will include three stop offs, where

you will enjoy a tasty course made

with ingredients sourced from the local

area. This delicious food will be

washed down with some of the

region’s finest ales and ciders. We will

be using public footpaths and we have

secured access to some areas that are

not usually open to the public – so this

will be a brand-new route for everyone

taking part!

“It will be the perfect opportunity to

take in beautiful views across

Shropshire, whilst keeping active and

supporting Shropshire’s food and drink

producers. We want the Tasty Trail to

be fun for all, which is why we’re lining

up live music along the way!”

Tickets are priced at £29.50 per

person, which includes admittance to

the walk, a three-course meal along

the trail, and a different alcoholic drink

at each stop.

The walk will be suitable for all fitness

levels and participants will be released

at allotted time slots to aid social

distancing. The start and finish point

will be at Upton Magna Village Hall,

SY4 4TZ.

Mrs Heath continues, “We are very

aware of Covid regulations and

therefore each of the stops will be in

the great outdoors so please bring

appropriate clothing and sun hats. If

the roadmap out of lockdown changes

and the event has to be postponed,

then full refunds will be offered or the

option to move tickets to a new date.

“We have already rolled over all our

2020 ticket holders to the new event,

so there are only limited tickets

available and we expect to sell out

quickly – so make sure you purchase

yours ASAP!”

Shrewsbury Canoe Hire:

the view from the blue canoes

Take the time this summer to see Shrewsbury and Attingham Park from a watery

new perspective in one of our cool blue canoes.

Whether you’re a Salopian or a visitor, canoeing the River Severn from

The Quarry Park is the must do activity in the sunshine. Join us for this

breath-taking experience of the local environment and have oodles

of fun with all the family. Take the time to see Shrewsbury from a

different direction. Here life moves a little slower. You’ll be paddling

under the Welsh Bridge, travelling through the local countryside

upstream – where you can take in the sights of the town river banks

and county show ground, and feel connected to Charles Darwin as

you pass by his childhood garden and Doctor’s Field where he had his

introductions to nature.

Down at river level you can often spot kingfishers, otters, sand martins

and other river flora and fauna. Have your own close encounter with

the incredible countryside and share a unique view of our historic

town away from the hustle and bustle. Exploring our big river is a

brilliant way to inspire young minds, get active and to make memories

that last.

We’re also very proud to be able to invite you to discover another of

our local rivers, The Tern at the National Trust’s Attingham Park. There

the hour long paddle takes you back in time and newly experience

the history of Attingham Park. Views from the river were originally

intended only for the landowners and their guests, which is very

reminiscent of a scene from Wind in the Willows.

It is a gentle meandering river, perfect for beginners. You’ll paddle

through the landscape, and wind your way through some enchanting

woodland. You may even catch the plop sound of a water vole as it

goes about its day. It is a wonderful place to spot all kinds of river

wildlife normally hidden from view, especailly the enormous

dragonflies that dance around the rivers edge. A great experience

that melts away the stresses of every day life.

Shrewsbury Canoe Hire - We are based in The Quarry Park, March

to September, next to the play area and Porthill Bridge. Our base at

the National Trust’s Attingham Park is open from July – September

One hour hire – All season long we offer canoe hire for 60 minutes

from The Quarry Park and/or Attingham Park, enough time to try out

this fun and exciting activity for all the family. You can turn up and

hire on the day, but we recommend that you book ahead on our

Half day hire from The Quarry you can choose between the

Shrewsbury town loop, or heading into the country upstream and

having a blissful riverside picnic. Book now via our website.

Who can canoe? The great news is open boat canoeing is

accessible to almost everyone, the very young to older people, people

with disabilities, and especially families. Canoes can hold two adults

with one to two children, & dogs are also welcome. To canoe with us

you don't need to have tried it before.

Safety - We provide you with safety equipment, highly trained staff

and constantly monitor the weather and river itself. For your

additional safety we take contactless card payments, follow strict

hygiene proceedures and recommended social distancing measures

during the pandemic.

We really look forward to getting you on the water! Find out more on

Successful learning is a happy adventure, full of

challenge, excitement, endeavour and reward. The

Preparatory School at Tettenhall College knows how

important it is to create adventures every day for their

youngest learners and offers a wonderful programme

designed to stimulate and stretch young minds.

Nestled within the beautiful woodland grounds of

Tettenhall College, the Preparatory School is very much

a part of the whole school, a place of learning for children

from the ages of 2 to 18. Whilst the Prep School itself has

fantastic facilities including Art and Computer Suites,

Forest School and multiple outdoor play areas, being

part of the overall College allows Prep pupils access to all

the facilities on site. These include a heated indoor

swimming pool, the beautiful College library, a

magnificent Victorian theatre, outstanding boarding

facilities, a fully equipped sports hall and squash courts

and acres of high grade sports pitches. Being integrated

with a high achieving and vibrant Senior School, allows

the younger pupils the chance to participate in

experiences that they would not otherwise have.

The academic programme combines a traditional

approach to nurturing a strong and solid knowledge of

the fundamental building blocks, with a forward thinking

range of learning opportunities. Through the innovative

Enrichment Programme, pupils have the opportunity to

study areas often reserved for their much older

counterparts, trying philosophy, engineering, Mandarin

or debating for example.

Most fundamentally, being part of the wider school

allows the Prep pupils to have teaching time with our

subject specialist senior teachers in French, Spanish,

Music and Science. This integrated approach to teaching

and learning ensures the very highest standards of

academic focus.

Prep children know they are part of a very special school.

A school steeped in heritage and fundamental values, yet

a place where technology and innovation has allowed a

full programme of learning to be delivered without

interruption, despite the recent challenges. Being a

registered charity also ensures that the focus at

Tettenhall is all about education. A commitment to

making the school accessible to as many deserving

children as possible is underpinned by a generous and

ongoing bursary scheme.

A limited number of places remain for entry in

September 2021. You are warmly encouraged to contact

the College Admissions Office for an informal first

conversation and to arrange your personal tour of the

Good Food BBQ Recipes

Pineapple & Pork Skewers

400g pork fillet

4 tbsp light muscovado sugar

60ml cider vinegar

1 tsp fish sauce

½ small pineapple, peeled,

cored and cut into chunks (or

use ready prepped fresh

pineapple, drained well)

1 green pepper, deseeded and

cut into squares (optional)

4 spring onions , trimmed and

cut into 4 equal lengths

small bunch coriander,

chopped (optional)

cooked rice or pitta, to serve

Cut the pork into cubes. Heat

the sugar and vinegar in a pan

over a low heat until the sugar

melts. Add the fish sauce and

cool. Tip in the pork and mix well

so that all the cubes are covered

in sauce.

Heat the barbecue. If you are

using coals, wait until they turn

white. If you are indoors, heat a

griddle pan. Thread the pork and

pineapple onto skewers,

alternating pieces with the

pepper and spring onion.

Barbecue or griddle the

skewers for 3-4 mins each side

(you may need to cook them for

longer if griddling). Sprinkle with

coriander, if you like, then serve

with rice or slide into pitta

Korean Chilli,

Sesame & Honey

Prep:15 mins

Cook: 20 mins

By Good Food Team

12 chicken thighs , boneless

and skinless

2 tbsp soy sauce

1 tbsp sesame oil

thumb-sized piece ginger,

4 spring onions , sliced

4 tbsp Korean chilli paste

(gochujang) or use a mixture of

3 tbsp ketchup and 1 tbsp

sriracha chilli sauce

2 tbsp honey

juice ½ lime

1 tbsp soy sauce

1 tsp sesame oil

2 tbsp sesame seeds

Toss the chicken in the soy

sauce, sesame oil and ginger.

Thread each thigh on two long

metal skewers, so that each

skewer pierces one side of the

thigh. Keep threading the

chicken, making sure it’s packed

onto the skewers tightly. Chill

until you’re ready to cook. Mix

the ingredients for the glaze.

Heat the BBQ. If using a coal

BBQ, wait for the coals to turn

ashen before you start cooking.

Cook the kebab for 5-8 mins on

each side (depending on the

heat). Once nicely charred but

not fully cooked through, start

painting on the glaze. The honey

will catch if cooked for too long –

the key to nice sticky chicken is

applying the glaze in layers,

turning the kebab often.

Once the glaze has been used

up and the chicken is cooked

through (it’ll take about 20 mins

in total), transfer to a plate and

leave to cool for 5 mins before

serving scattered with spring

Barbecue Baked

Sweet Potatoes

8 medium sweet potatoes

4 tsp olive oil

4 tbsp Greek yogurt

1 spring onion , sliced

Prep: 15 mins

Cook: 30 mins

By Sarah Cook

Rub each potato with a little oil and salt, then wrap in a double

layer of foil.

As soon as the barbecue coals are glowing red, put the potatoes

directly on them. Cook for 15 mins, turn with tongs, then cook for

15 mins more. Remove one, unwrap and check it is cooked through.

Peel back the top of the foil from each potato, split open and top

with a spoonful of yogurt and a few spring onion slices.

Traffic Light Chicken

Shish Kebabs

6 chicken breasts, chopped into large chunks

2 each red, orange and green peppers , deseeded and

chopped into large chunks

warmed flatbreads , chopped

tomato and lemon wedges, to serve

2 garlic cloves , finely grated

300g natural or Greek yogurt

1 tbsp paprika

3 tbsp ketchup

Make the marinade by mixing all of the ingredients together

in a large bowl. Spoon a third of the mixture into a smaller

bowl, then cover and chill until needed. Stir the chicken into

the marinade and set aside for 20 mins. Can be chilled for up

to two days, covered.

If using wooden skewers, soak them in water for 1 hr before

using. Alternately thread the peppers and chicken onto the

skewers until you have 6-8 kebabs. You can do this in advance

if you like, and chill the kebabs until needed.

Heat a barbecue to medium, or until a thin layer of coals has

turned grey. Cook the kebabs for 10 mins, turning occasionally,

until the chicken is charred and cooked through. Serve the

kebabs with the reserved yogurt sauce, warmed flatbreads,

chopped tomatoes and lemon wedges on the side.

Spring has sprung,

lockdown is easing and

here at The Vegan Hub

we are open again.

We are situated in The Parade

Shops, at the back of St Mary’s

Church, which is a stone’s throw

from the town centre and full of

fabulous independent

businesses. If you haven’t visited

yet, come and have a look at

the great products on offer.

Say Vegan Cheese!

The Parade, Shrewsbury

What are we buzzing about this

month? One Planet Pizza’s

collaboration with Meatless Farm to

bring you The Cheeseburger pizza.

Handcrafted pizza with their family

recipe tomato sauce, caramelised

red onion, sliced gherkins, chunks of

meatless farm burgers, smoky

finished with a

drizzle of burger

sauce. This perfect

pizza is a party in

your mouth!

If you tried vegan cheese in the past, you

may not have enjoyed it. Yes, it is safe to say

that if you go back even five years…how

can we say this diplomatically?... vegan

cheese had an ‘unusual’ taste. Thank

goodness things have changed! Now there

is so much choice for every budget and

palate. Big brands like Violife are popular in

a sandwich or grated over pasta and Bute

Island sell many different varieties of cheese

from blue to cranberry. If you want

something special for a cheese board, then

there are lots of artisan vegan cheese

makers who produce delicious, fermented,

nut-based cheeses. So, if you are vegan

cheese curious but a bit overwhelmed by

choice, talk to us at The Vegan Hub and we

can take you through the tasty options.

Hail Seitan!

Seitan (pronounced say-tan) is a versatile vegan meat substitute which is high

in protein, absorbs flavour well and is exceptionally versatile. But what is it? Seitan

is made from gluten, which is the main protein in wheat. It is made by washing

the starch away from the wheat flour, which leaves strands of gluten. Once

you have chosen the seasoning for the gluten and it is cooked, the firm and

chewy “meaty” texture will be a hit with your omni friends, and it is also great

for those that want to transition to vegan but miss the taste of meat. There are

lots of readymade seitan products, such as sausages, burgers, and seitan

pieces which you can add to your meal, or you can make your own seitan

meat substitute with a bag of wheat gluten and a good recipe.

Mediterranean Parcels

The weather is warming up and so we decided to create a rustic

Mediterranean parcel recipe that tastes amazing and is simple to make.

It is ideal for picnics and would also be great for a lunchtime snack.

1 pack vegan ready rolled puff pastry (life’s too short to make puff pastry!)

½ tbsp olive oil

½ red onion, diced

1 clove garlic, chopped

1 small courgette, quartered lengthways and sliced

1 red pepper, diced

3 cherry tomatoes, quartered

A sprinkling of mixed herbs

Salt and pepper, to your taste

50g vegan feta cheese, cut into small pieces (we used Green Vie

Greek Style)

Plant milk to glaze and seal the parcels

Poppy seeds for sprinkling on top (optional)

• Take the pastry out of the fridge about 10 minutes

before starting the recipe. This makes it easier to

work with.

• Preheat oven to 220°C (200°C for fan)

• Fry the onion and garlic in the oil for 5 minutes.

Then add the courgette and pepper and cook for

a further 7 minutes. Set aside to cool.

• Unroll the pastry, cut into four rectangles.

• Stir the feta, tomatoes, mixed herbs, salt and

pepper into the cooled vegetables.

• Cut the pastry into 4 equal rectangles. Add the

filling to one side of each of the rectangles making

sure you leave a 1cm border.

• Brush pastry edges lightly with vegan milk and fold

pastry over the filling, pressing around the edges

firmly to seal. Trim the sealed parcels with a sharp

knife to make them look neat. Make a small hole

with a knife in the top of each. Brush them with

plant milk and lightly dust them with poppy seeds if

• Bake for 15 minutes until pastry is risen and golden.

Serve hot or cold.

Old Skool Cookbooks Rule!

There are lots of fabulous vegan recipes available from a variety of places. If you

type vegan recipes into any search engine you will be overwhelmed by the

number of recipes available. There are videos on YouTube, vegan cookery

programmes and dedicated vegan food magazines. However, many people still

love a good old-fashioned cookbook. They look great on a bookshelf, contain

pictures to make your mouth water, they are easy to flick through and can inspire

you to try new recipes. They also make amazing gifts. There are a vast range of

vegan cookbooks available, which vary from cooking on a budget to vegan

dinner party dishes. If you are looking to find something new and exciting, then

browse through a few vegan cookbooks and give the delicious recipes a go!

Chocs away!

Do you want to go vegan but think you will miss chocolate too much? Well, the real game

changer for vegan chocolate is Vego, an organic, hazelnut chocolate bar that tastes sensational

(fair trade gluten & palm oil free). Since the first Vego bar was made the company has come on

leaps and bounds, adding a white chocolate bar, a fruit and nut bar, chocolate pralines, hazelnut

spread and now Vego melts that can be dropped into your favourite vegan milk to make a

delicious hot chocolate. Go on, why not give this cruelty free treat a veGO?!

Health & Wellbeing

Have you ever reached a destination and then

realised you couldn't recall the journey there?

The feeling of being a million miles away or daydreaming perhaps.

This is what happens to us frequently when we are not totally

engaged in what we are doing. Some people call this being on

autopilot. I recall one summer, approaching a driveway and looking

up from my steering wheel, only to realise that I had somehow

driven to an old address. Maybe this has happened to you? Perhaps

this happens to you more often than not?

So how do we ensure we are mindfully engaging

in our daily activities and how do we manage the

power of distracting or unhelpful thoughts?

Mindfulness is simply the practiced art of engaging in the here and

now. As I write this I am stood up (I am trying not to sit all day), the

sun is hitting my chest through the window and I can hear the faint

buzz of a glider in the distant sky. Actually, I can also hear my

neighbour tapping on something in his garden. Two students are

walking by and one of them has an ear pod in whilst talking to his

friend. My mind wanders to a thought; Can he totally hear what the

other is saying? My mind then returns some focus on what I am

writing. Who would be reading this eventually ? Would they relate to

what I am saying and to what extent do their minds wonder?

(I wonder!). Such a busy connection of thought, observation,

reflection, judgment. What busy minds we have.

Scene Local Media 01952 780058

Have a go right now!

Wherever you are, right now. Engage in this

moment. Follow these steps and it should all feel

a lot more present:

• Where are your feet? If they dangle how do they

feel? If they are on the floor, focus your energy

onto the surface area.

• How is your heart rate?

• What can you see?

• What can you hear?

• Are you having any thoughts emerging?

• Notice your thoughts?

• Are your thoughts helpful or kind?

• Where is your tongue in your mouth? Is it

touching the roof of your mouth? If so… let it

go, slightly open your mouth, release your jaw.

• How do your shoulders feel? Are they close to

your ears? Lower them.

• Take a deep breath through your nose, feel the

air come into your body

• Hold your breath

• Slowly release your breath

• Smile

• Come into the present moment

Unhelpful Thoughts

“Don’t take your thoughts

too seriously”

Eckhart Tolle

The human being has evolved to pay particular

close attention to negative thoughts rather than

positive. I guess that this is largely due to the fact

that it is a survival mechanism. However, as we all

know, we therefore tend to focus far too much on

the negative and have to train our brain to focus

the other way. Obviously, we need to consider risk

and complication. Otherwise, things like crossing

the road would be very dangerous. However, our

more hypothetical concerns can get a little out of

hand if not challenged! What if they don’t like me?

What if I said something to offend them? What if

no one shows up? So how can we acknowledge

unhelpful thoughts and distract ourselves?

I always use my social media account to engage

with others and ask these questions. On this topic

I have received some truly inspiring strategies.

People have beautifully adapted their responses

to the unhelpful thoughts their minds produce.

I have had feedback from people who distract

themselves with an activity. Running and

swimming seemingly the most common. When we

engage in an activity, we distract from our

thoughts and at the same time we help the brain

to release the natural feel good chemicals that can

boost mood. Some people have shared with me

how they challenge their negative thinking. In

essence, they question the thought - take the

thought to court i guess!

A client of mine has given me permission to share

her strategy; she actually verbally challenges her

unhelpful thoughts. Saying things like ‘No’ or ‘Just

stop now’. She has also said that when this

becomes difficult to manage alone, she requires

some help and support to work though the

Having the courage to share these intrusive or

unhelpful thoughts can then allow space to heal. If

you ever feel that you are not coping, then talking

things through with a trained professional can

really help. The Samaritans are available for you

24/7 on : 116 123.

Ways to manage unhelpful

• Engage in a meaningful activity such as walking

or gardening

• Acknowledge the thought and then discard if it

cannot be helpful to you

• Keep a gratitude journal to refocus your mind

• Remind yourself that your thoughts are not to

be taken too seriously

• Distract yourself with mindfulness - connect

with the moment

• Talk to others and share unhelpful thoughts

(we all have them)

• Challenge your thoughts

• Treat them like you would flowers or weeds -

water the flowers!

There are plenty of gorgeous holiday locations in the UK,

from national parks, such as the Lake District, to the Welsh

mountains, and from glittering Scottish lochs to numerous

sweeping sandy beaches scattered across England. With

staycations on the rise, what better way to spend a week or

two of summer than holidaying in the UK. But, instead of

opting for a traditional static caravan or holiday cottage

accommodation, why not try something a little different:

renting a campervan.

The Rise Of The Campervan

Homemade campervans are on the rise, with campervan

specialist Quirky Campers at the forefront of the trend. The

company hosts the annual festival Camp Quirky, where

attendees are encouraged to camp in their own self-made van

conversions and engage with a community of happy campers.

Attendees can witness all types of vehicles, from ambulances

to old army trucks, reborn as holiday campervans, and attend

workshops to learn how to construct, insulate, wire and even

plumb a home on wheels. As trendy as it is to build your own

campervan, it can be costly and time-consuming. Renting one

of these mobile homes, however, is ideal for a holiday.

How To Make A Campervan Holiday Work

One of the appeals of having a camper is free overnight

parking, and one of the joys of being a full-time ‘vanlifer’ can be

discovering and sharing safe camping spots. Sure, campervans

are welcome to book into UK campsites, but if you’re looking for

a low-cost holiday teetering on the wild side, then seeking out

free spots is even better. A scan of Google maps for car

parking spaces is a good place to start. Make sure you

physically check out an area to see if a spot is available too,

especially if it is an established campervan hotspot. For

example, if you were to take a stroll down the Bude canal in

Cornwall late afternoon, you are likely to find a line-up of

campers already settled for the night. It’s also vital to

investigate your desired area before you park. Is there a “No

Overnight” Parking sign? Are you in a residential area and likely

to upset the locals? Have you pulled into a car park which is

locked overnight? Always remember to respect the rules and

play it safe. If in doubt, check out apps such as vanlifer

favourite Park4Night, or wild camping website to find safe spots to cosy up for the

night. For peace of mind, you can check into a campsite or a

designated campervan car park, which invites campers to park

responsibly overnight (often for a small fee of £10 per night).

The Tricky Bits

The hard truth: not all campers are built with shower and toilet

facilities. We are lucky enough in the UK, however, to have

accessible public facilities. If you’re after a wash, pull up at a

surfing beach to find showers (both indoors and outdoors) plus

toilets, at a price of around 20p per use. If you prefer a bit more

privacy, you can seek out local leisure centres and pay for a

day pass. Not only can you grab a shower, but also a gym

workout or swim if you’re lucky! Of course, if you park at a

campsite, you will likely have these facilities thrown in for free.

If you are “fortunate” enough to have a port-a-potty or

compostable toilet inside your van, it is imperative that you

learn how and where you can safely and responsibly dispose of

your waste. Renting a campervan is a brilliant UK holiday for

friends, couples, or even the whole family. Now the UK is your

oyster, where will you pitch up?

Murray started from humble beginnings

commentating for the BBC in the British

Grand Prix in 1949 but this was only

part time, as he did not become a "Full

time " commentator till 1978. What got

him interested in Motor-Racing? Well

we, in this neck of the woods, could

take some responsibility for that

because as a kid his family moved to

Wolverhampton when his Father

Graham Walker was employed by the

World Famous Sunbeam Motor

Before he became synonymous with F1,

Murray Walker's actual day job would

you believe was in advertising. He was

one of those slogan makers for

advertising agencies. He was part of the

team that came up with the slogan, "a

MARS a Day helps you Work, Rest and

Play!" He says he did not directly come

up with that idea, however he does take

responsibility for "Opal Fruits, Made to

make your mouth water" and "Trill,

Makes your budgies bounce with

health" (No I don't remember that one

Now after doing occasional

commentaries in the Seventies, he went

Full Time during the 1978 season and

the Legend was born! His first real

partner as co-commentator was another

Legend, the 1976 World Formula 1

Champion James Hunt. At first James

and Murray did not get on because,

quite frankly there "Interests" were

poles apart with Murray's animated

descriptions and James' expert

knowledge they soon bonded over a

friendship that millions would love and

enjoy listening to, however behind the

scenes, as they only had one

microphone between them, grabbing it

was always a problem, can you imagine

that today! They were together for over

a decade but unfortunately James Hunt

passed away in 1993 at the tender age

of 45 from a heart attack, just two days

after the Canadian Grand Prix.

He carried on commentating Full Time

up until 1997 with co-commentators

such as Martin Brundle, Jackie Stewart

and Jonathon Palmer and did the odd

British Grand Prix here and there but

Murray Walker brought Formula 1 to

life, personally I remember his

commentary when his friend Damon

Hill Became World Champion and in his

words "saying he had to stop talking as

had had a lump in his throat"

Murray had his own language or as

they were called Murrayisms, "Unless

I'm Very much mistaken" and in 2009

he was voted the greatest Sports

commentator of all time, by British

sports fans. His Voice during a race

actually sounded like an engine revving

up and down during the laps and that I

believe is what endeared him to the

fans, (Me being one of them).

Thank you murray for the memories and

those great commentaries, Rest in

Eye floaters are typically small pieces of debris that float in the eye’s vitreous humour. Often, they can also be caused

by sudden separation of the vitreous jelly from the back surface of the eye (posterior vitreous detachment), which is a

natural part of ageing). Most people find floaters minimally troublesome, but for some they can be a significant

source of irritation and may interfere with your quality of vision and life. Modern surgical techniques have made the

permanent treatment of eye floaters safer than ever. Mr Balaggan specialises in the permanent removal of

symptomatic troublesome eye floaters using the very latest micro-incision techniques, with the procedure being

performed in around 25 minutes as a day case patient. If you are over 45 years old and have suffered with eye floaters

for over 6 months then get in touch to arrange an assessment by Mr Balaggan. Do read the reviews from his former

Lucy Woodcock Art – Capturing Character

Pet or equine portraits make

superb gifts for birthdays,

anniversaries and other special

landmark events. They are also a

precious way to immortalise a

treasured four-legged friend who

has been part of the family.

There is something very special about

a portrait that makes it different from a

photograph. I believe that a good

portrait captures more than just a

likeness of an animal; it can also

capture the unique personality and

soul of your pet.

I feel honoured to have already

provided dozens of people with a

portrait of their pet or horse. I often

say that the best part of my job is

making people cry! I sometimes get

sent videos of the recipient opening

their present or photos of pets with

their portraits. It is often the ideal gift

to get the person who has everything.

I work mainly in coloured pencil on

board. Coloured pencil is a time

consuming medium but allows for a

fantastic level of detail, from fluffy fur

to wrinkles and whiskers. Layer upon

layer of pencil is used to achieve a

realistic portrait with depth of colour

and a richness of detail. The

professional pencils that I use are

highly lightfast, which means that your

portrait will remain vivid over time. It

typically takes over 15 hours to

complete a portrait – you can be sure

that much time and effort goes into

producing a product that you will be

delighted with.

Commissioning a portrait is easy. You

need to find a good quality photograph

for me to work from, or a selection that

show the accurate detail of your pet.

Once you get in touch with me, we

can discuss which size would be best

and any other details which might be

relevant. Finished portraits come

mounted ready to put in a standard

sized frame. I can also arrange local

framing at an additional cost. I do

have a waiting list but am usually able

Car Review

By Sue Cooke

According to new research by the Society

of Motor Manufacturers and Traders

(SMMT) there are now 462 individual car

models available in around 4,650

standard specifications augmented by

an almost infinite number of options.

So where do you start when you decide

to buy a new car. My son’s criteria for his next company car

is boot capacity! He has to transport a lot of stuff with his

job. So he was interested in the new Hyundai Tucson which

I road tested this week. The SUV is bigger and wider than the

previous generation.

For me, it has to be good looks and I was really taken with

the exterior styling on the fourth generation model. Hyundai

designers call it ‘Parametric Dynamics’ that uses lines, faces,

angles and shapes to create kinetic jewel like surfaces.

Daytime Running Lights are seamlessly integrated into the

new grille and only revealed when switched on by the driver.

They are gorgeous.

More than seven million Tucsons have been sold since the

first-generation model launched in 2004, making it the

company’s bestselling SUV globally. Customers can choose

from nine exterior colours and each body colour can be

combined with a two-tone roof. It is the first Hyundai model

to apply hidden rear wipers, which sit under the spoiler.

Getting into the all-new Tucson’s spacious interior, or

‘Interspace’ as Hyundai refers to, is like entering a neatly

organised room. The dual cockpit consists of very

comfortable seats, a 10.25-inch open cluster and 10.25-inch

AVN-T screen. Everything is operated by touch, but usefully

a radio volume switch is on the steering wheel.

My son also likes technology. The Tucson has best-in-class

driver-assistance systems and active safety features making

it one of the safest vehicles on the market. The spec sheet

for my road test car is a very long list but slightly quirky

gadgets are the colour schemes which change depending

on which drive mode is selected. Rear Sleeping Mode allows

the driver’s row to listen to their selected audio without the

same audio being transmitted to the rear speakers, so that

passengers who are sleeping will not be disturbed. I found

it irritating when the steering wheel twitched but Lane

Scene Local Media 01952 780058

Following Assist keeps the vehicle safety

centred within the lane. I also found

irritating, the beep that alerted me to the

fact that the vehicle in front had moved

forward, especially in a traffic queue!

Remote Smart Parking Assist allows the

car to park itself, taking the pressure off

the driver in tricky parking situations. The Parking Collisionavoidance

Assist, available exclusively on the Tucson Plug-in

Hybrid, helps prevent collisions with obstacles in the rear

while reversing at low speeds. The automatic gear shift is a

little different but so much easier. You just press a button

for reverse, neutral, drive or park, which is located on the

console between the seats.

Rear passengers can enjoy 26mm of additional legroom.

Boot space has been increased by 33 to 107 litres,

depending on the chosen trim and powertrain, offering up

to 620 litres overall for luggage with the seats in place and

up to 1,799 litres with the seats folded. What I really liked

when taking stuff to the tip was the flat loading floor. You

can remotely fold the rear seats and you don’t have to lift

heavy items over a lip, they just slide in. Brilliant.

If climate change is one of your criteria, then the SMMT says

zero emission cars account for one in three available models

now. Hyundai has just announced prices for its plug in

hybrid. The 1.6 litre T-GDi Smartstream engine is paired with

a 66.9kw electric motor and a 13.8 kWh lithium polymer

battery which sits underneath the rear passenger seats so

doesn’t compromise boot space.

Whatever your criteria when buying a new car, the new

Hyundai Tucson has plenty to offer.

Here at Shropshire Paintball, we offer the ultimate paintball

and combat experience. The arena is far from being the

conventional battle zone, boasting a two story wooden house,

a double decker bus, disused caravans, dozens of dug outs,

trenches and even has its own two story fort with a lookout

tower! Set in the woods with flowing streams and undulating

terrain gives the battlefield an added sense of realism, with

plenty of bushes, trees and undergrowth to provide ample

ground cover, the unwary soldier can quickly find himself

surrounded by concealed enemies often bearing down on him,

all of this ensures for a very realistic combat environment.

Car Review

By Sue Cooke

At last, a fully electric car with a decent mileage range hits

dealership forecourts. Range anxiety does exist. I have

experienced it. But not this week. I am road testing the new

VW ID.3, a family hatchback which after a full charge will

take you 260 miles.

And the ID.3 has just won a tenth award, gaining best small

hatch title at the UK Car of the Year awards 2021. Design,

space and practicality is Volkswagen’s goal to bring

e-mobility to the man in the street who wants a car that is

easy to use and affordable.

The high roof makes the cabin easily accessible and very

comfortable. A splash of colour across the front dash and

door trim are a welcoming touch. The large screen central

dash is simple to use at a touch. Details of the speed you

are achieving are in large white letters on the screen behind

the steering wheel. If you have driven a VW, then the

instruments and displays will be very familiar.

I admit to being slightly envious when I see some of the

fantastic technology on new cars and wish I could afford

one. Buyers of the new ID.3 have the luxury of having the

same software level as new cars throughout the entire life

cycle of the car. Every three months the ID.3 will receive over

the air updates which VW says will optimise software

performance and may also include new functions and

customisation options. There is already a long list of

technical specifications and safety features.

As there is so much window space, including just in front of

the A frame, visibility all round is fantastic. I was surprised

at how much power and torque is available as 62mph from

flat is achieved in 7.3 seconds. There is a one speed

Charging to 80% capacity using a 100kW charger takes just

35 minutes, plenty of time for a quick shop and it means I

can easily make the 60 miles trip to my favourite designer

Scene Local Media 01952 780058

outlet without worrying if I will get there and back. The huge

benefit of driving an all electric car, once I get to the always

very busy car park is that I can go straight to the area

nearest to the shops where there are lots of free charging

spaces, usually empty! Or you can charge from a home wall

box overnight. A 100% charge at home will cost about £9.

Further additions to the ID.3 family will arrive during 2021,

with additional battery and specification variants, bolstering

one of the model’s key strengths and the reasons for its

success. These include the smallest Pure model with a 45

kWh battery.

The latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers

and Traders show that the demand for battery electric

vehicles (BEVs) grew by 185.9% to 108,205 units in 2020.

That’s against the figures for the Covid year when the UK

new car market fell by almost a third (-29.4%), with annual

registrations dropping to 1,631,064 units.

Manufacturers are bringing record numbers of electrified

vehicles to market over the coming months and Volkswagen

is leading the way with the ID.3 hatchback. If you prefer an

SUV; Volkswagen’s first fully-electric SUV, the ID.4 is

available to order by UK customers in First Edition trim now,

with deliveries to customers commencing imminently.

The future of driving in the UK is definitely electrifying!

Online Business and Mindset Coaching...

The SYone magazine is

committed to supporting small

local businesses, so when we

came accross Alex McCarthy it

was a must to chat with her and

let all our readers and small

business owners how she can

help and support you and and

your business grow.

Hi Alex, so nice to be chatting with you

today, firstly, please tell us about

yourself and your own life?

My name is Alex McCarthy. I am a

30-year-old Business Coach, NLP

Mindset Practitioner and Online

Entrepreneur based in Shrewsbury

Shropshire. After feeling unfulfilled

and lost in my earlier corporate

career, I left the U.K back in 2015 to

travel the world, meet people from

different walks of life and learn and

understand more about myself in my

quest for happiness.

Upon my return to the U.K in 2018 I

decided I wanted to use my extensive

marketing experience to set up my

own business as a Social Media

Manager. A few months after getting

started, I became fully booked and

had replaced my previous 9-5 salary

which felt like a huge achievement at

the time having not been long out of

However, I wasn’t completely fulfilled.

I was spending all of my time behind

the laptop and craving human

connection. I knew that with my

diverse digital, marketing and

business knowledge and experience

that I could be helping and impacting

my clients on such a deeper level.

This is where my coaching journey

Rather than doing the work for my

clients, I began to mentor business

owners and entrepreneurs so that

they could themselves create a

powerful online marketing strategy to

help build their brand, grow their

audience, and increase lead

generation. I also wanted to be able

to help and support my clients with

their mindset, to help navigate the

many obstacles which come as part

of starting and growing a business,

especially in the ever-challenging

online space.

I underwent my NLP Practitioner and

Executive Coach training in 2020

which now means that I am certified

to professionally coach my clients as

well as mentor and teach them how to

create online success in their

When the pandemic hit last year, I

was not sure how my business was

going to continue but as it happens,

the last 12 months have been the

most transformational and successful

to date. I have had the pleasure of

working with hundreds of clients on

an international basis, ran group

programmes, built a thriving FB

community ‘The Online Success Hub’

and even sold out my 1:1 Accelerator

back in December 2020 with so much

more yet to come!

In what ways can you help a new small

business with low budget?

Social Media is free and right now,

one of the most effective FREE

marketing tools that new and earlystage

businesses have access to.

Figure out where your ideal clients

are hanging out and dedicate your

time to building a presence in one

place for starters! One thing that I

commonly see is trying to do too

many things at once, which leads to

procrastination, overwhelm and even

burnout. The key when it comes to

social media is consistent, valuable

What do you enjoy most about your

My favourite thing about my job is

being a part of other people’s

success stories. Having clients come

to me with an idea and vision of what

they want to create and then being

able to help them make that a reality.

It’s priceless and means that I get out

of bed every morning grateful and

excited for what I get to do for work.

A feeling that I didn’t think was

possible at one point in my life and

that I never take for granted.

What is your biggest success to date?

passionate about helping others to

succeed and achieve their greatest

potential, both personally and

professionally. My online business

has grown and thrived over the last

12 months and during the global

pandemic, it just goes to show the

power of what online marketing and

having a powerful social media

strategy for business can do. There’s

never been a better time to start an

online business or get your current

business online.

What are your plans for the future?

My plans are to grow and scale my

coaching business so that I can

positively impact and support as

many aspiring entrepreneurs and

start-up business owners around the

world as possible. I also have plans

to release a business and mindset

podcast later this year which I am

very excited about!

Thats great, thanks Alex, can you give

any advice on where to start their

focus when creating a social media

strategy for there business?

Yes, Start with these 5 key areas

when it comes to building out your

social media strategy:

all about having an engaged and

loyal community who know, like and

trust you!

We need to sell to have a business.

Selling doesn’t have to feel pressured

and uncomfortable. It’s important to

remember that we are offering a

solution to our potential clients!

Showing up and being seen is a

huge part when it comes to social

media success for your business.

Getting my face onto Facebook lives

and Instagram stories was a game

changer for attracting ideal clients to

my business and also helped me to

hugely grow in confidence.

I’m not just talking about the visual

aspect of your business branding, but

also your personal brand and values.

I invite you to think about how you

want people when they consume

your online content? Are you showing

up in alignment with that?

Selling out my 1:1 coaching

programme The Online Success

Accelerator when I first launched it

back in December 2020. I am very

excited to be opening the doors to

this programme again next month for

my June intake. This is my signature

6-month, high touch, 1:1 coaching

programme which is perfect for

entrepreneurs and business owners

looking to significantly increase their

impact and income from mastering

their online marketing strategy and

get the mindset and accountability

they need.

Why should people turn to you to help

them with their business?

I love what I do and I’m truly

During these past 12 months people have

spent a great deal more time at home. The

current climate has given people time to reflect

more on their living space and how it works for

Since finishing her renovation in Baschurch, Becky has

ploughed her energy into growing her Soft Furnishings

so blessed and fortunate to work from home. Having a

separate space is wonderful and key to successful work.

I have my garden for a view, my pets for company and

I'm there for my children. Being able to close the door

on my work at whatever stage allows me to return to it

the following day to carry on".

Her love for creating and 'making stuff' began at an

early age. "If I couldn't have it I always tried to make

it. I have always loved fabric and these days there is

such an abundance of choice that no window or room

need be dull, whatever your budget".

She has noticed an even bigger increase recently in

upcycling. "People are keen to Reduce, Recycle and

Reuse. In addition to the new commissions I receive

unique, and sometimes bizarre, requests to alter

pieces. Some can be a real challenge but I enjoy them

even more!" Campervans have also featured amongst

the commissions with their cute, quirky, individual

Becky's passion is infectious, she's full of enthusiasm,

ideas and advice which influences you to look outside

the box. Considering a new look can be daunting but

also exciting. "It is such a rewarding job, the best part

is when I can see someone growing more confident with

their choices, once they start they become more excited

and then there can be no stopping them. They often

end up doing the whole house. Be warned, it can be so

contagious", she laughs.

"The one problem I have is that because I'm

surrounded by such beautiful fabrics and constant new

ranges I find it very hard to make a decision for my

own home. Five years on and I've still yet to finish".

Becky can be contacted via any of

these ways. She offers free quotes,

Rainy weekends are, let’s face it, a

part of UK living, and when you’ve

got kids, those indoor days can

often seem to drag. But instead of

wishing for sun, we say go with

what you have, and make the most

of those cosy days in. Don’t let the

grey weather get you down - use it

as an opportunity to have fun with

the kids and get creative without

going anywhere. Here are a few

ideas to get you started, using

things you’ll hopefully already have

around the house:

Have An ‘Upside Down' Day

No, we don’t mean walk around on your

head all day! We mean start the day

with bedtime stories and supper and

finish with breakfast! And make

everything in between an upside-down

day. This could mean having pudding

before your main meal, or wearing

pyjamas all day and dressing up for

bed. Try doing some upside-down

drawings and paintings or see if you

can read a book upside down (yes it’s

Make An Indoor Fort

If you can’t get out camping, do it

inside. You’ll need chairs, sheets and

cosy cushions. Fix sheets between two

chairs to make a den, and fill the fort

with pillows and blankets for a camping

feel. You can have a campsite lunch,

too: beans and sausages in little tin

bowls are perfect. Tell camp stories in

the evening by the light of a torch, sing

camp songs and enjoy hot chocolate

together. There are lots of apps like that feature nature

sounds to make you feel like you’re in

the middle of a forest. It will be a

‘wilderness’ adventure without going

Have A Dress-Up Day

If you’re happy to let the kids wear your

clothes, give them free rein on your

wardrobe and see what outfits they can

come up with. Or, why not let them

choose your outfit for you? You can do

a catwalk show, take photos and

generally enjoy having some all-out silly

fun with some mad looks. If you have

jewellery you’re happy to share and

multiple hats to finish the looks off, so

much the better.

Enjoy A 'Cinema Trip'

Watching a film at home can be like a

proper movie experience if you want it

to be. Decide on a flick you’re all happy

to watch, make sure you have snacks

in, and then work out what time the

‘screening’ will be. Get the kids to make

tickets with all the details on (movie,

time, location and ‘admit one’) and

ensure you’ve got blankets, popcorn

and drinks at the ready. Turn the lights

off if you’re watching in the evening,

make sure the grown-ups put the

phones away or turn them off, to make

sure you’re all immersed in the event,

and enjoy.

Have A Theme Day

Choose a theme and set up a few

activities to do throughout the day

based on that theme. For example, you

could choose ‘spotty’ - and you all wear

spotty outfits, make ‘spotty’ blueberry

muffins or spot paintings and watch 101

Dalmatians to finish off with. Or,

perhaps you like the idea of a ‘green’

day instead. This could mean wearing

green, only eating green things (hello

fruit and veg!) doing some activities in

the garden or having a go at painting a

lovely ‘green’ scene. The world’s your

oyster with this one. Pick your theme

and choose two or three activities that

fit. Other ideas: rainbow day,

nature/animal day, music day, sunshine

day, stars day…. ad infinitum!

Sew Queenies makes unique and

As we entered the national

Queenie’s was just a little idea,

actually you could say a dream. I’ve

always had a passion for sewing

and very creative so while I was off

work I started sewing. I wanted to

make some items for my youngest

daughter something that was

flexible for an active toddler, it all

started on my dining room table

one tiny really old sewing machine.

I used to post all my

images on my personal

Instagram page and

before I knew it I had

friends messaging

requesting that they

would also like to

purchase some of my

Wellwaters Small Animal Hydrotherapy & Holistic

Centre has been my dream for over 10 years and

opened in March 2021.

My name is Rachel Rogers and I have been

completely in love with animals since I had my first

rescue sheepdog for my 13th birthday.

I am a qualified Dog Agility Trainer, an agility judge, a Kennel

Club measurer for agility dogs and I also run Kennel Club

licenced Dog Agility shows.

Wellwaters Hydrotherapy Centre has been in the pipeline

since 2008 when I first had the dream of opening a centre, I

also qualified as a Level 3 Small Animal Hydrotherapist at this

The ethos of the centre is to help as many dogs as we

possibly can and support owners through what may be a

difficult and worrying time.

We have a 5 meter by 3 meter hydrotherapy pool with jets

and an underwater camera so that we can video the session

to send to your Veterinarian or other therapists that may be

involved with your pet’s rehabilitation. This is a zero weight

bearing therapy that can help tremendously with many of the

conditions listed below without putting any weight through

joints, muscles, tendons etc which may be injured or

We also have an underwater treadmill which is an amazing

piece of equipment for pets that do not like the pool or are not

suitable for the pool. This is low impact exercise.

Both can be also used for fitness/maintenance sessions or for

weight loss. As someone who has been heavily involved

within the dog agility world for over 20 years I see the

benefits all the time of keeping our pets fit and healthy for the

prevention of injury just as it is for us humans.

At Wellwaters we also have an in-house Veterinary

Physiotherapist who can also do gait analysis and laser

We are hoping to offer more treatments in the future such as

an animal Chiropractor.

Some of the conditions that are commonly referred for

hydrotherapy are:

* Osteoarthritis

* Hip dysplasia

* Elbow dysplasia

* Shoulder Injury

* Cruciate injuries

* Tarsus & Carpus Injury

* Legg Calve Perthes Disease

* Patella Luxation

* Dislocation

* Fracture

* Amputation

* Pre & post operative care

* Brachial plexus avulsion

* Cervical spondylomyelopathy

* Spondylosis & Spondylitis

* Traumatic spinal injury

* Juvenile osteoporosis

* Weight Loss

* Panosteitus

* Congenital limb defects

Following the journey of a

new local business owner

Adrian lives in Telford and runs Extra Help Shropshire, his

business services clients from Whitchurch in the north to Ludlow

in the south, then from Shrewsbury in the east to Oswestry in the

west, right up to the Welsh border. He has 4 children and enjoys

spending time with his wife Samantha.

Adrian originally worked in the financial services sector as a

relationship manager, most recently at HSBC, looking after a portfolio

of high-net-worth customers. Adrian’s role was to keep in contact with

these customers, ensuring he was there for them when needed.

However, in November 2019, Adrian’s entire department was made

redundant and his plans to find another role at the bank were thwarted

by the pandemic. Coinciding with this, his mum, who is affected by

Alzheimer’s and Type 1 diabetes, began to need more support. Adrian

took the decision to help the district nursing team and visit his mum

daily to administer her medication. Having had many dealings with

Social Care over eighteen months, Adrian became acutely aware of

the lack of support on offer in his area to people like his mum,

particularly those who are self-funding.

which I genuinely believe is lacking in this county, is a passion of mine,

and the relationships I’m forging, with professionals, clients and homehelpers

alike, makes me wish I had done this a long time ago.”

Since launching his business at the beginning of March, Adrian has

been busy delivering leaflets, following up leads, building his Facebook

page. He is enjoying exploring the rich history and appreciating the

picturesque scenery across the county as he travels around meeting

clients. He believes that if things carry on as they are, he and his team

will be able to make a tangible difference to the community they serve.

“I wrote to a number of sheltered housing schemes around the county,

which has led to me working closely with an independent living

coordinator for a housing association. My feeling is there are many

vulnerable people of advanced years in this area who are crying out

for the services Extra Help offers,” he says.

There’s a real need for our home-help services, and far too many gaps

in what’s currently available, in my opinion. We can complement care

services; work closely with housing associations to support their

residents; provide our home-helpers with stimulating work, that’s

always different, and generally make a difference to our clients’ lives.”

This need inspired Adrian to bring Extra Help to the local area.

Although his business is still in its infancy, Adrian is already receiving

enquiries and says he is veering towards support for elderly and

vulnerable people who are living independently.

He says, “Cleaning has usually been the initial request. However, after

explaining the other services we provide, I’ve discovered there’s often

a need for other support around the home. Providing that support,

What is a healthy lifestyle?

As a nutritionist and health coach I look at 5 main

areas when I am helping a client: nutrition, sleep,

stress, exercise, and self-care, as all of these play an

important part in your overall sense of well-being.

A healthy diet is one which is ‘nutritionally dense’,

meaning that each meal is providing your body with

as many nutrients as possible. A good way to do this

is to eat a balanced plate, which would be ½ ‘above

the ground’ vegetables, ¼ animal or plant protein

(about your palm size is a good way to measure) and

¼ complex carbohydrates (such as starchy

vegetables, oats, beans, lentils, wholewheat pasta

and brown rice). You should aim to drink 1.5litres of

water a day, as this is the most important nutrient for

your body, as you are made up of approximately 60%

be immediate and short term only. Your body will

release stress hormones, which will increase your

breathing and heart rate, and increase the blood

supply to your muscles so that they can react, i.e.,

run away from danger. However, it is when these

responses are not switched back off that we can have

a problem, as this can give us chronic stress. Chronic

stress can have many effects on your body, from how

it digests your food to how you sleep. It is therefore

important that we learn techniques to deal with this

type of stress.

Self-care is a way for us to appreciate our bodies, it is

time we give to ourselves to do something we enjoy

and surrounding ourselves with things that give us

little bursts of joy, such as family photos and fresh

flowers. Reading a good book, going for a walk, or

having a bath are examples.

Regular exercise can help with weight loss, improve

your mood, help to reduce your risk of diseases, it

can help with brain health and your memory, with

relaxation and improve your sleep. Adding physical

activity into your schedule can give you so many

benefits, so find the exercise you enjoy, as any

exercise is better than none!

If you are interested in making some changes to your

lifestyle, I have set up a free campaign to help and

encourage people to take steps to improve their

health, called ‘One Step A Week’

(, it also has a Facebook

page of the same name. Each Friday it is updated

with the step for the following week; either a nutrition

or a lifestyle change; all of them are simple and will

add up over the year and you can start at any point.

When you sleep your body makes repairs. Good

sleep supports your immune system, and it will

improve your concentration and productivity. Whereas

poor sleep is linked to weight gain; as it affects the

way your hunger hormones work making you want to

eat more carbohydrate foods; it can increase risks for

chronic illnesses, increase inflammation in your body

and has been linked to depression. Adults should get

between 7 and 9 hours sleep each night, it is best to

have a regular sleep pattern. If you wake up naturally

before your alarm clock feeling refreshed, you are

getting enough.

I also offer free 30-minute consultations, so if you

would like to transform your weight, health, and

lifestyle please get in touch.

Is it still a good time to sell?

For those of you wondering if you've missed your

golden opportunity, fear not I say!

This has proved to be our busiest 6 months in a long

time, but it's certainly not over yet. The Chancellor's

Spring Budget has added some longevity into what was

already a very lively property market. The extension to the

stamp duty holiday means that home movers can still

save thousands of pounds by using this window of time

to sell and/or buy.

Not only that, but the introduction of government-backed

95% mortgages means more people can get onto the

property ladder, or maybe move up a rung or two, a few

years ahead of schedule. This is excellent news for

anyone looking to move into properties which better suit

their current or future needs. Or those who have had a

taste of flexible home working and want more. So if this

is something you were considering over the next few

years, or you thought you couldn't afford just yet, it would

be wise to consider bringing your plans forward.

Average property prices in Shropshire have increased by

6% over the last year and are predicted to rise

substantially in 2021, making it advisable to act quickly

and secure your next dream home while it's more

affordable than it could be later in the year. Taking action

now will also enable you to secure the fantastic low

mortgage rates coming onto the market.

It's a seller's market, with buyer enquires showing no

signs of slowing just yet, so now really is the time to sell,

while demand remains high and supply is relatively low.

Properties are being snapped up and the lists of buyers

waiting for properties to come onto the market are

growing longer. This is not the time to be worrying about

finishing those last few jobs to make it your perfect

home, now is the time to let someone else make it their

perfect home, while you spend your time finding what will

be your next perfect home. Naturally, we can help you

with that, too.

With our COVID-secure home appraisal service, you can

safely discover how much your home is worth by booking

a free, no pressure, no-obligation valuation at

Or simply give us a call and one of the team would be

happy to have a chat about all things property!

Register of Electors

The election cycle continues...are

your electoral details up-to-date?

With the May elections now behind us, many people think

that the work of the Elections Team is now over for the year,

but that is far from the truth. The election cycle is a

continuous one, as with 63 unitary divisions and over 160

local town and parish councils in our area, there is always

the possibility of councillors resigning, which forces local byelections

to be held.

Shropshire Council publicises all forthcoming by-elections,

and past election results on it’s website – – as well as using Twitter. Make

sure you’re signed up to @ShropCouncil to find out more!

And it’s not just elections which make up the workload for

the Team. They are also responsible for keeping the

Register of Electors up-to-date.

Shropshire Council’s Electoral Registration, Claire Porter,

said: “One of the most important jobs that we need to

undertake, is to make sure electors know how to get onto

the Register of Electors and keep their registration details

up-to-date. If they’re not on the Register by a certain date,

they simply won’t be able to vote at election time.

The easiest way for most people to register, is to go online

and visit - the whole process

takes about 5 minutes. We can send out paper forms for

people to complete and return if they’d prefer, but it’s so

much quicker online – and it saves on the cost of postage

We also undertake an annual audit each autumn, when we

ask all householders to confirm that the details we hold for

that property are still correct, and it’s surprising how many

have forgotten to change their details when they move

So remember, if you are moving house, not only do you

have to tell the Council so that the details are correct for

Council Tax purposes, but each person aged 17 or over, has

a responsibility to register themselves individually on the

electoral register, if they are eligible to do so. This individual

requirement was introduced in June 2014.

It certainly won’t be long before Shropshire Council starts

collecting new elector data, in preparation to publish the

next Register of Electors, even though the publication date

is not until December 2021.

It’s not only important to make sure that your details are

correct for voting purposes, but Credit Reference Agencies

also use the electoral register as a means of checking when

people apply for credit or mortgages.

but registration is!

If you are a British, Irish

or commonwealth citizen

who is living in the UK,

you must register your details

on the Electoral Register.
