Andy Kelly’s ‘The Good Life’ article is a great

example of the positive side to lockdown

and new projects which many of us will have

embarked on during the past few months as

we found ourselves spending more time at

home. With another one of their great walks

this month, the members of Milnrow Library

Walking Group are looking forward to May

17th when hopefully they will be able to walk

in larger groups rather than the current

rule of six.

cricketers, no matter your age or how

good you are. We are a fully inclusive

club which promotes good sportsmanship

throughout all age groups.

JUNIORS

At Milnrow we look to give all our young players the best training and

playing experience, with dedicated coaches ensuring everyone goes

away with a smile and wanting to come back to the next training session.

On Saturday mornings, the club host our ECB All-Stars programme for 5

to 8 year olds. We are also running the ECB Dynamos programme for the

first time that’s for 8 to 11 and is the perfect introduction into a new sport.

The Juniors play in different age groups in the Greater Manchester

Cricket League - under 9’s, 11’s, 13’s, 15’s and 17’s, and play competitive

games throughout the week during the season.

LADIES

We have had a fantastic response to the introduction of our Ladies and

Girls team. We have enough equipment for all. Thank you to all those who

have shown an interest and those still looking for something to do and

have fun - please get in touch.

BUYER DEMAND MAKES HUGE JUMP

In the week following the Budget announcement,

buyer demand spiked by 24% as people scrambled to

take advantage of the stamp duty holiday extension.

Overall demand was also 80% higher in that same

week compared to the same time period over the

previous four years, due to a combination of the tax

break and the ‘search for space’ triggered by the

Covid-19 pandemic.

But the supply of new homes coming on to the market

remains constrained, putting further upward pressure

on prices, according to our latest House Price Index.

These factors contributed to annual house price

inflation of 4.1% in February, more than double the rate

of 1.8% recorded in the same month of 2020.

Unsurprisingly, the mismatch between supply and

demand is continuing to drive house prices higher.

The typical value of a home is now 4.1% higher than at

the start of the first national lockdown in 2020, with

prices rising by an average of £8,907 during the past

year or £750 a month.

February marked the fourth consecutive month during

which house price growth was above 4%,

However, after this marker, property prices will

surely have to start coming back down towards the

end of the year unless the economy has a boost in

employment levels once everything re-opens and

we get back to some normality.

Therefore, given the recent spike in demand for

During lockdown I found

myself with more time

at home than I had ever

had before. I began to

re-evaluate my life and

to seriously consider what

was important to me.

I could never get physical and

mental well being taking top

priority and to that effect I looked

around for ways to improve them.

I didn’t have to search too far as I

found what I was looking for in my

garden. For years it had been a

‘place to keep on top of’ - keeping

the grass cut and the weeds from

the flower beds. Now it has a very

different feel to it.

It started by giving over a small

patch of land to plant some

potatoes and onions. They grew

quickly and I was delighted with

the end product. It got me thinking

about turning my garden into

a working space. It wasn’t long

before the fruit bushes were

planted, the composter was in

place, a nest of bees moved into

an old chimney pot and with the

strategic placing of feeders some

birds began to visit. I loved seeing

a bit of wildlife, it simply made me

very happy.

It was then, in the back of my mind,

that the idea of keeping chickens

began to emerge but was it a step

too far?

We knew nothing of keeping

poultry and had to embark on a

lot of on-line research. The British

Hen Welfare Trust came to our

rescue. It answered so many of our

questions on space, housing, feed,

bedding and so much more that

we hadn’t even thought about.

There were hurdles to overcome

not the least of which was an

open plan garden, this had to be

enclosed in both an attractive yet

secure way to keep the chickens in,

the foxes out and the neighbours

happy.

The hen house and run

were purchased, bags

of feed , grit and straw

arrived. Then armed with

some basic knowledge,

we took the plunge.

Our 4 rescue hens arrived

in a cardboard box.

Despite overgrown

claws, twisted beaks

and threadbare wings

- they had already

captured my heart . I was

fascinated to watch them

settling in. They stared in

bewilderment at their new

environment then slowly began

to scratch at soil, taste new foods,

find shelter and learn when it was

time to go to bed.

Within a week they had begun to

explore their surroundings and

they grew in confidence. We gave

them names (Hetty, Lou, Ada and

Hilde) and their quirks became

known to us. It was a joy to watch.

So now we are 4 weeks down the

line. Our garden most certainly

looks a little messier. There’s poo

patrol every night, a weekly house

clean and change of bedding

and a fortnightly powerhouse

of the patio.

Yet it really doesn’t seem like work

at all rather a new found structure

which has been introduced to our

lives. Several curious visitors have

begun to appear at the garden

gates and we have lots to chat

about. We are spending more and

more time outside wrapped up in

woolies tackling those outdoor jobs

we’ve put off for ages or enjoying

the warmth of a few logs on the

fire. All in all I feel we’ve reclaimed

our garden and what it was always

intended to be.

Milnrow Library Walking Group

MILNROW MEMORIAL PARK TO HIGH CROMPTON PARK

Now that it is Spring, what better way to

banish the lockdown blues, than to go on

an invigorating walk over Whitfield finishing

at High Crompton Park. This six mile walk

over meadows can be muddy in wet weather,

and there is a long gradual incline, so good

walking shoes or boots are recommended.

OS sheet 81/91 and A to Z Milnrow/Shaw

covers the walk area.

THE ROUTE

Leaving our base in Milnrow Memorial Park, exit the

main gates and turn left along Newhey Road to the

junction with Elizabethan Way. Go across the road

and proceed down Bentgate Street which brings you

to the entrance of Ellenroad Farm.

Continue through the farm gate and across the

bridge spanning the River Beal. Take the long

steady climb up the paved farm track, past the Dog

Training Compound and into Gartside Farm (circa

1697 grade 2 listed ) Take the left-hand side gate

and follow the track that leads to a stile in the field

fence. Proceed up the field and over another stile.

There are many recreational facilities in the park, for

young and old. Well maintained flower gardens and

Crown Green Bowling, Tennis and Basketball courts,

Sports fields, Swings and Play Areas. An area for

leisure and suitable for a picnic.

Continue straight along a raised bank path, with the

stone wall on your left and the Business Park way

down right. Bryney Heys Farm is before you, and the

path takes you left via three waymarked stiles, around

the farm. Continue over the field in the direction of

a double steel field gate but take the wooden gate

to its left. A single wind turbine comes into view, so

proceed in its direction, over another stile, and along

the field path with the wire fence on your right.

At the end of this field, turn left, signposted Whitfield

Hall 1 mile. Proceed with the wire fence on your

right, past the wind turbine in the adjoining field, to

the next signpost. Turn right and go down the field,

over a stile on the right and follow the way marker

down the track with a wall to your right and wire

fence on your left.

Continue down the path with high banking either

side. In wet weather this section of the path

becomes a stream, with deep ruts and sections of

bedrock exposed, so take extreme care. The stream

then diverts from the path and is culverted; the

path emerges onto Moss Gate Lane. Turn right

and it’s a short distance to the entrance of High

Crompton Park.

To return, either retrace the Route that you have

travelled, or go along Rochdale Road and Broad

Lane down to Chadwick Lane and the Business

Park back to Milnrow Memorial Park.

Covid 19 Update

Following the Government’s Roadmap out

of Lockdown, step 2, Milnrow Library is

now open, but only for borrowing books,

browsing and computer users. We are still

not able to return to use the Library as our

Walking Group base.

We will continue to meet every Monday

morning outdoors in Milnrow Memorial

Park, from 9.30am & leaving out at 10am.

The Rule of 6 and social distancing will

apply. Walkers must give their names

and contact number for track and trace

purposes as well as provide their own PPE

(masks, sanitizers etc) From Monday May

17th, step 3, is likely to come into effect,

which means we can walk in larger groups,

though not over 30 people. We will assess

the situation at that time in accordance with

the Government’s directive.

No matter what rules apply, if you want to

walk for exercise with a friendly group of

people then come along and join us.

Enjoying photography together

Rochdale & District Camera Club is a group of people

from all walks of life who share a love of photography.

Our members have a wide range of experience, from

beginners to international competitors, but everyone

works together to help keep each other enthusiastic

about their hobby.

The Club has met in Rochdale for years, most recently

having a home at Syke Methodist Church and

Community Hub. Naturally, meetings are suspended at

the moment thanks to the ongoing pandemic, but the

Club has moved with the times and embraced online

meetings to keep in touch. We meet on Tuesday nights,

whether online or in person depending on the guidance.

Over the last 12 months, Rochdale & District Camera

Club has had to deal with enormous changes and find

new ways of keeping members connected with their

photography, in the same way that most clubs have

had to adapt. As a result, we’ve been able to share our

photographs, our stories and even hold competitions

from our homes. The age of Zoom is well and truly here.

Our weekly programme of meetings includes guest

speakers to keep us inspired; sharing skills such as

camera settings and picture framing; learning how to

use editing packages to bring the best out of our

images and many other activities.

We also meet outdoors regularly in order to find

interesting things to capture, ranging from local nature

walks to city centre trips for architecture and street

photography. During lockdown we’ve held tabletop

photography competitions, challenging members to

make interesting images at home.

If you have a camera you love to use, or if you’d like

to learn how to get more use and creativity from your

equipment, we’re a very friendly Club and new

members are always welcome.
