Now that the weather has well and truly warmedup and you’re spending more time in yourgarden, you may feel the need to make a fewadditions to it – perhaps something to bring alittle more architecture or structure, to clothe awall or fence, or something to bring perfume orperhaps colour at an ‘off’ time of year. Whateverit is, there is sure to be a good selection oftrees, shrubs and climbers available right now.At any time of year good planting is importantif the plants are to get off to the best possiblestart, and to grow away well for years tocome. But if you plant at this time of year it isall the more essential to do it correctly, sincetemperatures are increasing and the soil ismore inclined to be dry. So, what are the toptips for tremendous planting?Make sure the plant is properly suited to thespace you have available (check the label or ina good book). Dig the planting hole, making itbigger than the current root ball. On clay soilsdig out the hole using a fork, as this is less likelyto impede drainage, and make sure the hole islarge enough to incorporate some bulky organicmatter plus some grit. Fork over the sides of theplanting hole. Use garden compost, well-rottedmanure or proprietary planting mix to improvethe soil texture and add nutrients. If the soilis really poor then you could also use somegeneral fertiliser.Tease the roots out well before planting. Ifnecessary, soak the root ball in water for acouple of hours first. This helps to loosen up acongested root ball and makes it much easier forthe roots to move out into the planting hole andsurrounding soil.Lower the plant into the hole and gradually addthe soil mixed with planting compost. Checkthat only the roots are buried, not the stem, asplanting too deep can kill and will always makethe plant suffer and perform poorly. (The onlyexception to this is clematis, which do better ifplanted a few inches deeper than this.) Placinga cane over the top of the planting hole makesit easier to judge the correct height of the soillevel. Firm the soil around the roots. The surfaceof the compost on the existing root ball needs tobe level with the soil surface.Re-check the planting depth and water in well– this is really important – and once the soil isthoroughly moistened, apply a 7.5cm (3”) deepmulch all over the root area.
