Book club
Mothers. Daughters. And a handful of thrilling reads.
Mother. Daughter. Angel. Monster? When Lisa Jewel, one of our favourite authors,
endorses a book, saying ‘Set my nerves jangling,’ you know it’s a not-to-be-missed
read. The Push revolves around mother Blythe, who wants to give her first child,
Violet, all the love she deserves … all the love her own mother withheld. But
Violet’s not an easy child, demanding, fretful, unsmiling. And for Blythe, it’s a case
of motherhood being not at all what she hoped for, and everything she feared.
Dark, disturbing, gripping … Ashley Audrain’s debut novel is all that and more.
• She wanted a child, so she took one. Call Me Mummy (another debut novel,
this one by Tina Baker) kicks off as Mummy – a glamorous, uptight woman who
has everything except a child, kidnaps five-year-old Tonya (Mummy’ll have to
change that name, so common). But Tonya’s not the perfect child Mummy was
expecting … in fact, she’s a foul-mouthed mini version of her real mum, Kim,
who’s been labelled ‘scummy mummy’ by the media, and thinks she deserves to
have her other children removed from her care too. Thrilling, harrowing, bleak …
and unputdownable. Both available from exclusivebooks.co.za
Glen Carlou Gravel Quarry Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 is a
sophisticated and powerful wine … all layers of ripe
blackcurrants, dark berries, dark chocolate and hints of
bramble and cedar. It’s full and complex … like a few of the
books on this page. You’ll find it for R440 at glencarlou.com
A new role...
Having spent most of her life on the stage, professional dancer and performer
Simone Burden (née Mann) recently stepped into what is sure to be her most
demanding, most important and most rewarding role ever … she became a mother.
10 Get It • Ballito Umhlanga May 2021

imone (or Sisi as she’s
known) has spent her
entire life in Ballito.
Well, almost. She
has, of course, also
spent a good many
years travelling and
performing on stages
around the world.
As with most women,
especially professional
dancers and sportswomen, 33-yearold
Sisi’s life has done a dramatic
about-turn since she gave birth to her
beautiful daughter, Daisy, just a few
weeks ago. And Sisi and her husband,
former Sharks rugby player Craig
Burden, couldn’t be happier.
From a family of five, three of the
Mann sisters have been deeply
entrenched in the world of dance
and showbiz. Their mother Michelle
was a well-known Ballito dancer and
gymnast and Sisi’s two sisters, Danielle
and Dominique, have each achieved
their own successes, with Danielle
having also danced internationally
and Dominique being a ten times SA
aerobic gymnastics champion.
Although they all went their separate
ways after school, Sisi and both her
sisters have now settled down back
in Ballito, with their folks just down
the road. “I always knew I wanted to
live in Ballito. I just feel so lucky that
the town has grown and the North
Coast has become such a bustling
area. I’m not sure if it would’ve worked
for us living here if it was still a small
little village. We have the best of both
worlds now.”
A dancer and gymnast throughout
her schooling years, Sisi took a gap
year after school to travel with the
SA gymnastics team. Both she and
Dominique were on the SA team but,
Sisi says, gymnastics wasn’t her first
love. “I enjoyed it, but I always felt like
it was keeping me away from my true
passions of dancing and being on
stage.”
Sisi spent three years at the Cape
Academy of Performing Arts and
it was while she was there, she
says, that she was given incredible
opportunities to travel and perform
internationally in places like
Edinburgh and New York. “It was such
an amazing experience and opened
a lot of doors for me.” Having seen
her sister perform in Richard Loring’s
remarkable African Footprints production, Sisi says it was her dream to do the
same. “My sister was (and still is) my idol and I wanted to do what she did! It was
the first professional show, outside of academy, that I auditioned for and got into.”
Sisi spent over two years travelling with the cast, performing in China and France.
It was during this time, she says, that she realised her true love was musical
theatre. After a short stint in Show Boat in Paris Sisi returned home and joined the
Playhouse full time as one of their resident dancers. A year later she joined the
Kickstart team and got to work on incredible productions like Shrek and Chicago
(a career highlight for Sisi).
A year after Sisi met Craig, who was playing for the Sharks at the time, he took a
five-year contract with a team in France. “It was a busy time. I would visit him for
a few months and then come home and do a show. I was really lucky though as
Steven (executive director of Kickstart) knew me and my capabilities, so I didn’t
always have to audition for parts.”
A back injury forced Sisi to take some time off from dancing and she took a yearlong
sabbatical with Craig in Paris. “It was so amazing for us and we got engaged
the following Christmas in 2018.” The couple were married in 2019 and, around
the same time, Sisi opened her own small dance studio in Salt Rock. She also
took on the role of resident choreographer (something she is passionate about)
at Kickstart, just before the first hard lockdown in 2020.
The next best thing to dancing, Sisi says, has been teaching. Not wanting to
focus only on dance, but rather groom performers for musical theatre as a whole,
her studio is called the Performing Arts Centre and she now offers dance and
private musical theatre lessons as well as tumbling classes.
Her studio is now run from her Ballito home and Sisi is enjoying her new
‘settled’ life. “I loved all the travelling and jumping from gig to gig, but it’s nice
to slow down. And, of course, it was amazing being able to teach through my
pregnancy.”
Deciding to start a family was a big decision for Sisi, perhaps bigger than for most
people. “As a professional dancer, you are ultimately making a decision to let go
of who you were. It wasn’t a decision I came to easily, but I’m so grateful that I
did.”
With Craig having also recently retired from professional rugby, the couple are
definitely living a different life nowadays. “It’s been such a whirlwind, but it’s also
so exciting. We have had so much support and it feels like the right time for us.”
A calling to care
The definition of a nurse, when you look it up, is ‘a person trained to care for the sick or
infirm, especially in a hospital’. Nurses are so much more than that, though. In honour
of International Nurses Day, we sat down with one of Ballito’s most accomplished and
trusted private nurse practitioners, Trish Idensohn.
Text: Leah Shone
At the frontline of patient care, both before and during the global pandemic,
nurses around the world deserve a moment of thanks. Not only for the work they
do and the challenges they face, but for the genuine care and compassion they
show their patients.
It’s is this compassion, Trish says, along with a desire to care for others and
an intrinsically altruistic outlook, that should be the driving force for anyone
deciding to pursue a career in nursing.
Having been a qualified nurse and midwife for more than 30 years, Trish certainly
walks the talk. As the founder of CliniCare in Ballito, Trish is a highly educated,
experienced nurse practitioner and has a string of qualifications behind her
name. She is an internationally-recognised advanced wound care specialist, as
well as tutor and lecturer at universities around South Africa and abroad.
At the heart of her personal mission as a nurse though, is simply a desire and a
calling to care for others. She reflects on the words of author Leo Buscaglia, who
said, “Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word,
a listening ear, an honest compliment or the smallest act of caring, all of which
have the potential to turn a life around.”
Trish’s own life was turned around when she lost her father at the age of 15. “I will
never forget the incredible care and kindness we were shown when my father
was in the ICU. Now, when I am in front of a patient, I think of myself ‘giving back’
for that.”Trish completed her basic training in 1984 and graduated from Grey’s
Hospital in Pietermaritzburg. She says the scope of nursing has advanced a lot
over the years, with nurses furthering their education and careers and becoming
nurse practitioners and specialists in
their fields. “Nurses are often called
on by doctors to give advice these
days, and we have the hands-on
experience,” says Trish.
Preventative health care is incredibly
important to nurses, just as it was to
the famous Florence Nightingale who
founded modern nursing and whose
birthday is used to mark International
Nurse’s Day on 12 May.
“The pandemic has been a whirlwind
and affected all of us so differently.
What we’ve realised though,” says
Trish, “is that the basic environmental
principals that affect our health, as
pointed out by Florence Nightingale
all those years ago, are still the
same. Although simple, they are
so applicable in the delivery of
healthcare in nursing practice and the
pandemic of today: pure water, pure
fresh air, light (especially sunlight),
cleanliness, drainage as well as a quiet
environment and attention to our
nutrition. The WHO defines health as,
‘a state of completely physical, mental
and social well-being and not merely
the absence of disease or infirmity.’ It’s
so important that we remember this.”
Although they have always been
dedicated hard workers, Trish believes
the pandemic has shown the world
how incredible nurses are at facing
a challenge head-on - and rising to
that challenge. “We are human and
we do cry,” she laughs, “but we have
incredible support from other nurses
and our industry as a whole. Not one
of my staff members, whether they
were working in hospital, at the clinic
or doing homecare, refused to do
their job or didn’t rise to the challenge
within our practice throughout this
pandemic and I’m incredibly proud of
their dedication.”
A visit to the
wax bar!
Living the life of a busy mom
is challenging enough without
having to remember to make
time for all those personal
necessaries, like waxing and
keeping your eyebrows in
check, right? We’ve found
a wonderful new spot that
makes hair removal as quick
and easy as possible, without
keeping you away from ‘real life’
for too long.
We’ve all heard about a dry bar - a
place where women quickly zoom
in, get a blow dry and zoom back out
again looking fab and ready to take
on the world. Well, now we have a
wax bar (right here in Ballito) and we
are already massive fans! And it’s not
just for women!
Catering for everyone in the family,
from mom and dad (they do male
grooming too!) and teens, WAXIT at
the Lifestyle Centre Ballito is KZN’s
first wax bar and the eighth franchise
in the country. We were invited for
a treatment experience recently
and were blown away by the chic,
modern, super clean salon and as
well as the professionalism and speed
with which the WAXIT team manage
to get the job done! A bikini wax
and eyebrow thread and tint literally
took just 15 minutes! So convenient
– and affordable! WAXIT Ballito owner,
Sharon Andrew says she has been
blown away by the support they’ve
received at their ‘sanctuary of
smooth’, especially amongst
male clientele. “It’s been
so satisfying seeing
people leave our salon
without having to painstakingly wait
for an appointment to open up or
wincing at the price of waxing costs.”
Many of their clients are sportsmen
and women removing hair from their
legs, backs and areas ‘below the belt’
to avoid chaffing. WAXIT has a wide
range of treatments as well as their
own hypoallergenic wax and Epilfree
permanent hair removal. Services
include waxing, tinting and threading
and a variety of niche offerings, such
as ‘vagacials’! They also have special
deals for moms and daughters –
perfect for Mother’s Day this month!
Bouncing back
Resilience has been a strong theme in almost all of our lives over the past year. Former
environmental consultant, mother of two and début author, Prathisha Singh, has
made it her goal to help people live their best lives after hitting her own personal ‘rock
bottom’ during the pandemic.
Like many people, the onset of
the global Covid-19 pandemic
was a massive blow to the usually
positive and ambitious Prathisha.
“I experienced rock bottom. I was
overwhelmed with negative emotion
and felt stuck, powerless and hopeless
in my situation ... until I made the
decision to turn my life around, learn
the lessons and move forward for
myself and my family.”
Now she has written a book, The
Ultimate Guide to: Bounce Back
Higher, has started a blog and is on a
mission to share her ‘tried and tested’
methods to empower others to live
their best lives too.
Born in Tongaat, Prathisha spent three
years living in New Zealand with her
parents while she was in primary
school. When they returned to SA, she
attended high school in Gauteng and,
after school did a BSc honours degree
in Geology before marrying her highschool
crush, Sumeeth.
Prathisha worked as an environmental
consultant and owned a Kumon
franchise before discovering her
current passion: helping people
rediscover their essence and live their
greatest lives. She and her husband
live in Ballito with their two young
children.
“After hitting my ‘rock bottom’, I
immersed myself in the teachings of
the world’s leading experts in the selftransformation
industry. I followed the
tools and techniques that I learned
through discipline and diligent
practice and discovered that it is
possible to be happy and peaceful
no matter what your situation or
circumstances are.”
Rock bottom, Prathisha says, is a place
of feeling stuck, unable to move
forward, hopeless, fearful, anxious
and powerless. It is a demonstration
of not being able to live your best life
and it is different for everyone. To one
person, it may be getting a divorce,
to another it may be being diagnosed with a terminal illness, or losing a child
etc. I think every person experiences this at some point in their life, and this is
where self-transformation happens .. if the individual decides so. My rock bottom
involved relationships, finance and health in a time of extreme uncertainty. In a
relatively short period (which felt like a century!) though, I bounced back higher –
and I believe others can too.”
Prathisha says her book is aimed at anyone who wants to go through life feeling
peace, love and happiness despite what is happening in their life or in the world
at large.
“The book inspires you to tap into your inner wisdom, love, peace and happiness
that is ever present within each of us by providing simple and practical exercises
to do so. If you feel like you are at rock bottom, or feeling stuck in your life, the
book is a great start to you bouncing back higher and living your greatest life.”
Prathisha also has an online course called ‘Live your greatest life’ available on her
website.
Prathisha’s top three tips for ‘bouncing back higher’:
1. Make the decision to live your greatest life. Write a powerful declaration
asserting that you will overcome any situation and live your best life – no matter
what it takes. Be that determined.
2. Let go of the past. It does not exist. The only place that it does exist is in your
mind. Whatever has happened is over now. Let it go, adjust your path and keep
on moving.
3. Be mindful of your thoughts. Throughout the day, ask yourself, ‘what am I
thinking?’ If your thoughts do not support you feeling good, gently release them
and move on to a happier thought. You can and you will change your life one
thought at a time.
Well. Mum certainly is the word this month … with our massive Mother’s
we think would make our mum very happy indeed. And it’s valued at
a whopping R7220. Just look what we’ve got … • An on-trend Kubu
rectangular basket (R299) from Biggie Best, which is great for storage
in your home, and to store all these goodies. Biggie Best has also
added a white orchid (R79), from their particularly exceptional
collection of faux flowers and plants. Details: volpes.co.za • From Lou
Harvey, SA’s homegrown designer and decorator, a Gusset Vanity
(R435) and Long Tom Cooler (R460) in the brand new Python print
(which is giving the ever-popular Leopard a run for its money). It’s
one of the new collection of designs … which also includes iconic
paisleys and florals so loved by LH fans. Details: louharvey.co.za • A
duo of Densitium Skin Care essentials. This anti-ageing range from
French skincare brand SVR is dedicated to slowing down and treating
ageing skin (not, Mum, that we think you’re ageing … you’re beautiful!).
There’s a Densitium Bi-serum, formulated for the face and neck for the
treatment of sagging skin, wrinkles and dryness (R954) and Densitium
Crème Riche, which targets dryness, thinning skin, lack of elasticity
and loss of definition (R424). Details: info@filorga.co.za, or buy online at
absoluteskin.co.za / riekiemedaesthetic.co.za • Sunnies for the coolest mum
on the block. Our hamper includes a pair of Baker Eyewear sunglasses
(R1499), which is exclusively available at Execuspecs … it’s a
quality, stylish range for people who see the world differently.
Details: execuspecs.co.za • Kids have their school packs. Mum
needs a stylish Thule Achiever Backpack 20L (R1399). It has
much-needed organisational solutions for mums on the go,
protects your laptop, loads of space for your other daily gear,
great colours (think Asphalt Camo, Black, Burgundy or Seneca
Rock), and is really durable and tough, so built to last in the urban
jungle. Details: thulestore.co.za • A bottle of Fluere (R269) … a
distilled ‘spirit’ without a trace of alcohol. It’s a blend of botanicals,
based on essential oils of juniper, lavender, coriander and lemon
peel, and is perfect to create non-alcoholic long drinks and
mocktails. For mum, we’ve got the Spiced Cane option,
lovely notes of chocolate and coffee with a sweet, complex,
earthy palate. Details: available from takealot.co.za •
Staying with the non-alcoholic theme (homework
nights!), there’s also a bottle of Abstinence (R229)
in the basket. Locally produced, sophisticated and
showcasing some of Cape Town’s finest indigenous
flora, there’s not only no alcohol but also no sugar, no
colouring, no flavouring, so it gets full marks from us.
Details: available from takealot.co.za • Friday night … so
no school lifts in the morning. Time for a G&T. Mum’ll
love Bloedlemoen (R395). Pronounced Blue’d Le Moon,
it’s an award-winning handcrafted, small-batch local gin
made from 10 natural botanicals; a quintessentially
South African gin made from the delicious Tarocco
blood orange, and proudly boasts as the first blood
orange gin in the World. The fruit is sourced locally
from our growing partners in the Western Cape of
South Africa. Details: Available at takealot.co.za • Mum will
think you’ll have whisked her off to a tropical island with
this one. She can imagine sitting on a beach, sipping
on her Don Papa rum (R499) cocktail. This premium,
small-batch, single-island, aged rum from Negros in
the Philippines, is aged for seven years to produce a
light and fruity, amber coloured rum that is perfect
for sipping alone or as the key ingredient in epic
cocktails. Details: available from takealot.co.za
• And at the end of a long day … a soft, fluffy towel to
wrap around you after a long, scented bubble bath.
From Volpes, we’ve got a set of Indulge White Towels
(R329) … 100 per cent cotton, highly absorbent, super
luxurious and with a double-stitched hem for durability.
Heaven. Details: volpes.co.za • Whether your mum’s a
homemaker or a board member, stressed from no sleep
with a toddler or a teen (both, we know, cause sleepless
nights), a young new mum or an experienced gran, a careful
teetotaller or a lover of exotic cocktails … we know one
thing – she’ll be a jolly spoilt mum if you win this hamper for
her. To enter, simply visit our Facebook or Instagram page
Moms who hustle
Being a ‘millennial mom’ is no joke … especially when you’re juggling everything
while still trying to manage a career or business of your own. Here are some of the
most successful, hardworking moms who ‘hustle’ on the North Coast
Bonita Cherry - Outlook Orange
Established in 2009, Outlook Orange is a team of creative and
strategic consultants who partner with businesses to pinpoint
their vision and difference. They then create actionable brand
building and digital marketing plans that propel growth.
Your top tip for juggling motherhood and being a
businesswoman? Find the value of balance. As working
mothers, we can easily get sucked into making work our
primary obsession, an all-consuming activity. We need to
continually stop, re-assess and take the safety of the middle
ground rather than the imbalance of the extremes. God,
my marriage and my children come first, and so, in order to
be fully present, I need to continually ensure that I am reevaluating
that which is consuming me in order to ensure
sustainability. The best piece of mothering advice you ever
received? Set an example for your children - in your life, in
your love for people and in your pure devotion to everything
you put your hand to. Details: 087 460 0257,
Carla Ashton - Thandana Bag Co.
Carla is the owner and founder of Thandana Bag Co. which started
in 2010. The KZN-based company manufactures genuine leather
and in-house designed laminated fabric bags for the whole family.
Thandana started off as a hobby and quickly transformed into a
financially viable business. “It’s been blood, sweat and lots of tears
to get where I am today, especially having a little girl keeping me
on my toes, but it’s all been worthwhile and paying off!”
Your top tip for juggling motherhood and a being
businesswoman? Time management. Allocate days that will be
specifically work-focused and get your schedule in order. The same
goes for being a mom. As much as I love the buzz of my factory,
I also have to make time for my family, which comes first. Having
your own business has its perks and flexitime is such a gift. Some
days I allocate my time solely for my daughter. The best piece of
mothering advice you ever received? Don’t take life so seriously
and your way is the right way. My morning ritual is prayer with a
good cup of coffee to get me through the day. Details: 031 502
sell accessories, clothing and lifestyle products from other top
local South African brands. We are the perfect place to find
a unique gift for someone special.” Your top tip for juggling
motherhood and being a businesswoman? Planning! I’m a
firm believer in the quote, ‘if you fail to plan you plan to fail’.
Life can feel pretty chaotic at times, but if you plan your week
and set yourself goals it becomes more manageable. The
Lifestyle Centre Ballito and Florida Road) and a factory where everything
is hand made, using locally sourced natural products. Scoop staff came to
them with little work experience and many were previously disadvantaged,
growing from scooping staff to managers. Scoop believes they sell both
happiness and hope. Your top tip for juggling motherhood and being
a businesswoman? To be honest, it’s more than just a juggle between
motherhood and businesswoman - luckily women are born natural
multitaskers. My most important job is to be a great wife and mother, then
a great leader and role model to my team and to positively impact as many
lives as I can. On a personal level, it’s important to take time out to do the
things I’m passionate about and never lose my own identity. When the going
gets tough, I always remember, I am enough! The best piece of mothering
advice you ever received? Be brave enough to allow your kids to fail. Details:
Kate Lovemore Baker – Lovemore Aesthetics
Kate started Lovemore Aesthetics 18 months ago and her focus is
on one hundred percent progressively permanent hair removal with
electrolysis. “A lot of clients come to me for chin hairs, underarms,
bikini and brows. I also remove skin imperfection like skin tags, spider
veins, milia and cherry angiomas with thermocoagulation. I work in
Ballito, Umhlanga and Durban North at The Skin and Nail Bar. Your
top tip for juggling motherhood and being a businesswoman? You
need to have a really good support network who understand that
every now and then there might be late hours or long days when
mom can’t help. I’ve been really blessed with a hands-on husband and
grandparents, aunties and friends who are happy to help. As much as
I can, my daughter comes first. The best piece of mothering advice
you ever received? When your kids are quiet, leave them. Peep round
the corner to see they are not destroying your home, haha, but leave
them be if they are happy and content. It’s also really important to
take time out for yourself. Even if it’s gym, taking a walk, yoga, sleeping
whatever fills your cup! Make sure you remember who you are. Details:
Nix & Dom - Ulu Collective
Ulu Collective is a sister-in-law-run décor and lifestyle brand, established
in 2019. They offer a diverse range of décor and lifestyle items, from
accessories to carefully sourced home décor pieces (often inspired
by travel, culture, nature and the things they both love). They also
offer a home styling, décor and design service to help clients create
inspired home spaces. “We bridge the gap between interior designer
and retail outlet.” Your top tip for juggling motherhood and being
a businesswoman? It is an incredible privilege to have a career that
allows one to be present as a mom. Our top tip is to manage your time
wisely, stay organized and compartmentalize. Set time aside for each
role and try your best to stick to that - this structure allows you to be
totally present and intentional in each role. The best piece of mothering
advice you ever received? There is no fool proof rule book (although
there are many out there to read!). Rather learn to trust your intuition,
follow your gut and do what feels right for you and your little family. A
mother’s intuition is powerful, connect to this and trust it. If you act out
of love and kindness you will most likely always make the right choices.
Style &
comfort
Lockdown and working from home
have created a definitive shift in the
way people are dressing. The ‘athleisure’
trend was around long before the
pandemic, but its onset has made this
style more acceptable and fashionable.
Meet Umdloti sisters Natalie and
Maxine, whose clothing line is all about
effortless, comfortable style.
Text: Leah Shone
Besties, sisters and born-and-bred KZN babes, Natalie and Maxine Elphick’s stunning new fashion line, Bod the Brand, has
taken athleisure wear to the next level. With a focus on functionality, style and comfort, their mix-and-match range is made
from superior quality fabrics with seamless comfort in a carefully curated colour palette. We caught up with them to find
out a little more about the ladies behind the Bod the Brand.
Tell us a bit about yourselves and your individual careers thus far
We both attended Durban Girls College and went on to study business (Natalie) and photography (Maxine). Design, art and
travel were an integral part of our lives from a very young age and very much influenced our career paths. We have a shared
love of being active and outdoors and both swam competitively for many years. After school Natalie went to the USA on a
full swimming scholarship where she attended the Villanova School of Business and received a BBA, majoring in marketing.
She then went on to complete a fashion merchandising diploma, taking her into her first job as a junior merchandiser.
Maxine completed a BA in visual communications, majoring in photography at the Stellenbosch Academy of Design and
Photography. She pursued a photography career for a few years, but decided there was more out there for her. Together
we started our first business, XO The Brand (a more formal
ladies fashion and accessory online store), which has now
expanded into our new venture, Bod The Brand.
What was your vision/goal with this business?
After starting XO and working from home (even before
the pandemic), we found that athleisure was our goto
wardrobe. As lovers of all-things-fashion, we found
it difficult to find stylish and comfortable pieces that
we felt put-together in. This inspired the vision to bring
women a stylish ‘second skin’ that focused on comfort and
confidence. Whether working in or working out, on-themove
or lounging about, we wanted to create wardrobe
staples that easily transition women from one daily task
to the next, without a second thought on what to wear.
More than that though, we are a community first and a
brand second, which is why we place great emphasis on
our #bodcommunity. We want this to be a platform that
provides the goods and the space for women to look and
feel their best.
What does ‘athleisure’ mean to you?
Athleisure means put-together comfort you can wear for
almost any activity. ‘Any-wear’ pieces you can WFH (work
from home) or workout in, run errands, travel, brunch or
barre in. It’s the normalisation and formalisation of more
casual, athletic wear in the best way. A hybrid style of
dressing that is stylish and edgy and makes getting ready
every day easy. Athleisure has been around for a while, but
the work-from/stay-at home environment has intensified
consumers’ need for it, especially in a way that is more
acceptable, trendy and fashion-forward.
What are your do’s and don’t’s for wearing
‘athleisure’ on a day-to-day basis?
Do’s: Go for a matching set – makes for sophisticated
effortless dressing; Layer up – an oversized tee over biker
shorts, a tonal sweatshirt with leggings, a bomber jacket
over a set; Wear with seamless undies; Check the features
to match what you’re dressing for/activity impact level;
Pick a neutral colour start + work up to our coloured sets.
Don’t’s: Be afraid to try new things – our styles are made
for all babes (and we offer free returns!); Go too small,
when in doubt, size up; Over complicate it. Keep it simple;
Don’t compete - empower and share!
The vibe at this stunning
beachfront restaurant is
what North Coast living
is all about! From the
panoramic ocean views and
delicious food to the chilled,
trendy ambiance ... there is
nothing not to love!
Text: Leah Shone | Photos: Chris Allan Photo
It’s not hard to see why Kuta-Kola
became a firm favourite amongst
both locals and holiday makers
almost overnight when it opened on
the Ballito beachfront just over four
months ago.
The trendy restaurant embodies so
much of what people love about the
North Coast – beach vibes, healthy
food and a stylish, upmarket interior.
And did we mention the view? It’s
remarkable really, to think that this
prime piece of real estate was once
a flat, hidden away from the public
eye. Now, thanks to some great
foresight by the restaurant owners,
this incredible space’s true potential is
being realised! And how lucky for us!
Although it has become a popular
breakfast and smoothie hotspot
amongst beach walkers and early
morning runners, Kuta-Kola was
actually originally destined to be a ‘gin
bar’, according to co-owners Claudia
and Ryan Blom.
Lockdown restrictions changed
things though, and so they decided
to open for breakfasts and lunches
instead. “There aren’t many beachfront
breakfast options and we wanted
to offer something a little different.
Ballito has a healthy, outdoor, active
community and we wanted to tap
into this,” says Claudia. As owners of
restaurants in Johannesburg, the
couple have a lot of experience in
the food and beverage industry.
They, together with their friends and
partners at the time, Friso and Karien
van der Wal, set about opening Kuta-Kola.
“Ryan has a lot of experience in the kitchen and wanted the menu to be different
... instead of just the traditional ‘bacon and eggs’ breakfasts.” He and health and
fitness trainer Karien came up with an exciting menu with both decadent and
healthier options.
The Zimbali Kola (eggs, salmon and avo rosetta, blistered cherry tomatoes and
mushrooms with a spinach and cabbage fritter) is a popular option and the
flapjacks with bacon, berries, strawberries, melon and bourbon whiskey syrup is
absolutely divine! The smoothie bowls are both beautiful and tasty, made with
fresh fruit and delicious granola.
The Mezze Platter is best enjoyed with a cold
Their lunch offerings are also awesome,
with delicious prawn and chicken
curries, stunning salads, burgers with
homemade patties and wonderful
mezze platters (preferably enjoyed
with an ice-cold glass of white wine,
overlooking the ocean!).
The clean, contemporary interior was
conceptualised and put together by
Ryan and artist Friso and there is even
a super funky basement area, which
Claudia says will be used in the evenings
and for events. “Our dinner menu will
be completely different and we have a
great cocktail menu as well. Keep your
eyes on Kuta-Kola. As the space evolves,
we’re planning to offer even more North
Coast flavours and fun!”
Kuta-Kola’s mouth-watering flapjacks, served with
bacon, berries, melon and Bourbon whisky syrup!
Kuta-Kola owner Claudia
Kuta-Kola flapjacks
You’ll need: 3/4 cup cake flour, 11/2 tsp
baking powder, 1 pinch salt, 1 large
egg, 3 Tbsp sugar, 1/2 cup milk, 1 Tbsp
butter melted.
To make: Sift the flour, baking powder
and pinch of salt together in a
medium mixing bowl. Make a well in
the middle. Beat the egg and sugar
together in a smaller mixing bowl
and add milk and butter. Add milk
and egg mixture to the well in the
flour mixture and blend well to form
a smooth batter. Lightly grease pan
with butter. Heat pan to medium
heat. Blob tablespoons of batter into
the pan about 2cm apart. Fry the
flapjacks on medium heat for about
2min on one side until the top is full
of air bubbles-the bottom should
be golden brown. Turn and fry for
another minute on the other side.
Coastal escape
Our incredible year-round warm climate and beautiful ocean views make the North
Coast a sought after location for anyone looking to invest in a holiday home. This
gorgeous Zinkwazi beach cottage was recently revamped for holiday rental purposes
and the result is simply exquisite.
After working alongside their
architect to redesign what was
originally bought as a beach cottage,
the owners of this beautiful beachside
abode called in the talented Caryn
and Kath from Dandelion Designs to
transform it into a relaxing, coastal
escape.
Although this Zinkwazi home, which
is in walking distance from the beach,
is often occupied by the owners who
love spending time on the coast,
it was also revamped for use as an
Airbnb. With this in mind, Caryn
and Kath’s approach to the interior
was to create a space where guests
would feel like they could take their
shoes off, get comfy and unwind. “We
embraced the beautiful natural light
The designers embraced the natural light and
stunning views from both levels of the cottage

The natural textures and colours of this Voke
rug work beautifully in the TV lounge
Sprucing up for rental!
1. Know your guest. Who is your
target market? Families, couples,
luxury or budget? Understanding
who you are planning the holiday
rental for will help guide you to
know what would be important for
them.
2. Comfort. A good night sleep as a
guest is very important. Make sure
your beds are comfy and aim to
offer the best quality linen, pillows
and duvet inners. It’s a nice idea to
have two types of pillows on the
bed – firm and soft – and ensure that
your mattresses and pillows have
protectors.
3. Declutter. Although holiday
rentals are often also family homes or
cottages guests don’t want to see all
your stuff and family pictures. Taking
personal items out and de-cluttering
will make a guest feel more relaxed.
Include a small lockable storage area
in your rental for all your personal
items that guests don’t access and
you can bring those out when you
or friends visit.
Caryn and Kath
and stunning views from both levels of the cottage and all the materials, colours
and finishes used were chosen with relaxation and comfort in mind,” says Kath.
Earthy colours, timbers and rattan textures dominate the interior, giving the
cottage a modern coastal feel without being too clichéd ‘beachy’. They also used
lots of plants inside, to give the feeling of a merging of the indoors and outdoors.
Most of the pieces in the cottage were custom designed to suit each space.
Notable pieces include the outdoor furniture on the upstairs verandah from
local company Alifurn Outdoor Living, the beautiful Houdtlander dining table
and server, which has beautiful lines and joinery detail and the Voke rugs in the
TV lounge and master bedroom. “Voke brought us a sneak preview of their new
range when we are planning the cottage and we fell in love with the natural
textures and colours. The new Freshly Woven collection was perfect for the
spaces!”
Founded by Caryn Overton and Katherine McIntosh, Dandelion Designs is an
interior design and project facilitation studio based in Salt Rock. They focus on
residential and commercial projects, including new builds and refurbishments,
harnessing their combined passion for bringing people’s visions to life through
the creation of beautiful spaces that are rooted in functionality.
We asked them to share some tips for creating a beautiful holiday rental home...
4. Technology. Have a good WIFI
connection and leave passwords
and instructions for access. Some
guests need to work remotely or just
need a good connection so they can
#hashtag lots of selfies! Offering a
Smart TV with access to Netflix and
possibly having a Bluetooth speaker
so that guests can play music is
always a bonus.
5. Coffee! Items like a coffee
machine, smoothie maker or juicer
will give your guest a good start to
the day. Leaving a jar of homemade
rusks to go with their coffee is a
lovely extra touch to make them feel
welcome.
6. Focal points. When planning and
designing your Airbnb, think about
the areas you will photograph for the
listing. Make sure that your photo’s
stand out from the rest.
7. Outdoor spaces. Our beautiful
climate means outdoor spaces are
important. Add a braai and outdoor
seating or even some hanging pods.
ESTATE SHUTTER
AFFORDABLE HOME IMPROVEMENTS TO ENHANCE YOUR LIFESTYLE
Tweaking your home with interesting additions and alterations can be practical, cost-effective as well as fun. Here are three ideas to consider
that will also up the value of your property.
CUT DOWN ON CLUTTER WITH SHUTTERS
If your window treatments are starting to look tatty or old fashioned and you’re looking for a fresh approach, consider replacing them with
shutters. They’ll update your home instantly, with their sleek, modern lines and classy look.
Shutters do more than just look beautiful. You can adjust the louvres to get the right amount of privacy, sunlight, and air flow. Or close the
louvres to block out irritating noise and to stop monkeys and baboons from getting inside your home to help themselves to your fruit basket.
Louvre shutters vary in design and material, so do some research and find the type that best suits your circumstances. Trellidor make two
different types of aluminium louvre shutter. One is engineered to provide high security, with built-in strength and patented locks.
The other is designed for homes that don’t require this level of protection. They look similar and have excellent strengthening features
including great locks, but their primary attraction is their good looks at an affordable price.

ESTATE CLEAR GUARD
LOCKDOWN SHUTTER
UPGRADE YOUR OUTDOOR AREA WITH SECURE
MESH DOORS
Patios are often the hub of home life but they do come with
drawbacks that limit how long we spend out there. Mosquitoes,
monkeys, coastal winds, and heat are a few that come to mind.
One way to extend your use of this space is to fit mesh doors and
windows. These are see-through so you don’t lose the view or that
feeling of being outside. The mesh allows some airflow but blocks
out strong wind. It is a fantastic mosquito deterrent as they can’t get
through the mesh. Neither can snakes or any other creepy crawlies.
There are different types of mesh products, so be sure to opt for a
reliable product fitted by experts. Trellidor offers a high security
version for free-standing homes as well as a lower priced design for
homes where security is less of a requirement.
CREATE A LOCKDOWN FOR YOUR ASSETS
We’re all a bit twitchy about the word ‘lockdown’ since Covid-19
arrived but creating one at home using roller shutters can add a
tremendous amount of value. This type of lockdown could range
from protecting your family at night to blocking off the entrance to a
collector’s wine cellar.
Roller shutters assist with internal climate control, not just for the
wine cellar but also for patios, living areas and bedrooms. Being fully
automated makes them easy to use, so they’re a good choice for a
safe zone door to protect the most precious assets, your family.
Trellidor has a new product in this range that is a ‘first’ for South
Africa because it uses a non-motorised locking system. It is so
strong that during testing, a forklift couldn’t open it. It may be
something to consider for sensitive areas such as gun rooms or
pharmaceutical storage spaces.
5top bathroom trends
Your bathroom is much more than just another room in your home.
It can be a sanctuary, a safe space and a place to unwind from
the stresses of the day. We spoke to a talented team of bathroom
specialists about some great current bathroom trends.
The bathroom is, essentially, the place
where you start and finish every
day. So, naturally, you want it to be a
beautiful, welcoming space, right? The
team at Simply Bathrooms specialise
in value-for-money, high quality
bathroom products, ranging from
sanitary ware to plumbing supplies.
They shared their top five bathrooms
trends for this year with us ...
1. Industrial style
Inspired by old industrial factories, this
trend is all about incorporating raw
building materials as finishes within
your bathroom. There are a few ways
of achieving the industrial look in your
bathroom, including incorporating
raw concrete counter tops, bathtubs
and basins or using exposed beams
and reclaimed wood.
38 Get It • Ballito Umhlanga May 2021

2. Brass finishes
The brass finish trends allow you to
add a little ‘luxe’ into your bathroom.
Whether you opt for matt or satin
finishes, brass always tend to bring a
sense of glam into a space. This can
be achieved with various finishes,
including faucets, exposed piping, a
brass bath mixer with a hand shower
and, if you’re feeling brave, even a
bathtub!
3. Wooden finishes
As our lives become increasingly
busier, we all want (and need) a
little bit of calm at the end of a day.
Incorporating wooden finishes
into your bathroom is great way of
bringing a sense of nature and calm
into the space. Wooden finishes are
also a great way to add texture and
layering.
4. Floating vanities
Floating vanities are a great choice for any size bathroom, but more specifically
smaller bathrooms. Floating vanities create the illusion of space by making your
bathroom appear lighter. Using the trend of a floating vanity is a great way to
introduce a new texture into your space as well.
5. Black is the new grey
From black fixtures, tiles and accessories (and if you are feeling very brave, an
all-black bathroom), black creates a feeling of luxury and elegance. The key
to incorporating and designing a bathroom using black fixtures is the use
of texture. You can introduce black into your bathroom by adding a feature
wall or black tiles as a way of bringing in texture and a black shower door and
accessories will create a chic, simplistic look.
Bridal
Newly engaged or deep in the wedding planning trenches? Or perhaps you just love seeing
beautiful love stories unfold? Our 2021 bridal feature is sure to inspire, excite and delight you!

A moment
in time
Nothing warms the heart quite like a wedding. It is the
coming together of so many dreams and is, ultimately, the
beginning of a love story. We chatted to two local brides
who shared the details of their special day with us.
AUTUMN SUNSET
Bride and groom: Nombuso
and Mpilo
Please tell us about the proposal?
It was July 2018 and we went away to
Cathedral Peak in the Drakensberg.
We booked a helicopter ride that
takes you on a romantic picnic at the
top of a mountain. It was our first time
in a helicopter, so it was an exciting
experience. When we got to the top
Mpilo wanted to take pictures (which I
found quite irritating in that moment,
haha). I didn’t realise of course that he
was trying to get me to stand up. As
soon as we were done with the ‘selfies’
he got down on one knee. Of course,
I said yes!
What look and feel did you have in
mind for your wedding?
We wanted our wedding feel warm,
with orange, mustard and emerald
green hues. Ultimately this translated
into a theme we called ‘Autumn
sunset’.
How did the pandemic affect your plans for your wedding?
We had to postpone our wedding by six months, which meant we
ended up having an Autumn-themed wedding in Spring! Covid
meant all our plans had to be paused and we had to re-evaluate
our priorities. We nearly lost the venue due to the liquidation of the
business. It was a tough time with high emotions as the venue is
one of the most important parts of a wedding day. Of course, the
restriction on numbers meant we couldn’t have all the family and
friends we originally planned to invite. It was hard to make cuts, but
we are so blessed with understanding family and friends.
Please tell us about the planning process and executing your
vision for your wedding?
Hiring Oh Happy Day, the wedding coordinators, is literally the best
thing you could ever do for your wedding! They understood our
vision and created a stunning mood board, which was perfect and we
didn’t change a single detail. Then they brought it to life and literally
went beyond our expectations and wildest dreams. They really took
the stress away by supporting us and being our calm in the storm.
Please share some of the details of your perfect day …
Bride and groom: Kelly and
Grant
Please tell us about the proposal.
We are both very close to our families,
but while my immediate family all
live on the North Coast, Grant’s live
in Pietermaritzburg and Cape Town.
He wanted to make sure that they
would all be around to the share and
celebrate the occasion with us, so
he proposed when they were all in
the area on holiday. Grant took me
for lunch at Zimbali for ‘some quality
time’. Afterwards, we went for a walk
on the beach, which we love doing.
On the walk, he dropped to one knee
and popped the question. I was so
happily surprised and immediately
said yes. He had hidden a picnic
blanket and champagne in the
bushes and we spend some time
enjoying the moment. When we were
finished, we turned to make our way
back and there, gathered at the top
of the beach, were both our families. I
burst into tears. It was so special.
What look and feel did you have in mind for your wedding?
We wanted a fun, vibrant mood using a bright, warm colour palette. We did this
using plenty of flowers and candles … and accentuated the vibe with the music!
A special mention must go to my good friend, Gabriela Mckenzie, who was
responsible for the absolutely breathtaking flower arrangements.
Please tell us about your beautiful wedding dress and bridesmaids dresses.
My wedding dress was romantic, classic, soft and flowy, in an off white with
lace. It was designed by the fabulous, talented Julia Ferrandi. At the reception,
I changed my accessories to go for more of a ‘fashionable party’ feel. It was
the perfect dress for me and I absolutely loved it! I had four bridesmaids and I
wanted them all to feel beautiful and comfortable in their dresses so I decided to
leave it to each of them to decide on the style and colour of their dresses, which
were to be either a deep cerise pink or tangerine. They all have impeccable style
and, when the day arrived, they looked simply stunning! Their dresses were all
designed by the incredible designer, Bianca Warren.
Please share any other special details that added to the magic of your day?
There were so many special moments. One I will never forget was when my
husband serenaded me on the dance floor to ‘Bed of Roses’ by Bon Jovi (this
was definitely not planned!). Also, as the guests were seated in the reception
area, the ‘tequila song’ played while waiters served everyone tequila shots. This
undoubtedly set the tone for the amazing celebrations that lay ahead! Although
Kylie allowed her bridesmaids to design their own
dresses, all of which were made by Bianca Warren
we had hoped for a sunny day, the
rain and mist of the Midlands worked
wonders in creating a magical dreamlike
setting for our wedding. We had a
photo booth and, as the celebrations
gathered steam, the photos became
so much more fun! What made ours
so memorable was that we were able
to make use of the exquisite flower
arch as a backdrop to all the revelry!
Peeling
power
for the perfect glow
with QMS Medicosmetics
Why exfoliate?
Because it really is one of the most important steps
in any skincare system, forming the foundation to
prepare your skin for subsequent skincare. It should
be done regularly, consistently, and safely. Regular
treatment with fruit acids is one of the best ways to
exfoliate the skin and is the key to skin regeneration.
It provides multiple benefits to the skin without
negatively impacting the deeper layers of the skin.
With age, your skin toughens, and when you exfoliate,
you remove the dry, scaly, dead skin, which allows for
stimulating cell regeneration and production. Fruit
acids also assist with the increase and stimulation of
collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid production. So,
new life is bought to the skin by increasing oxygen,
nutrients, and moisture. The result … your skin is
immediately firmer, smoother, softer, and more radiant.
Is it possible to over-exfoliate?
As it turns out, when it comes to your face and
exfoliation, you can have too much of a good thing!
Over-exfoliating is one of the biggest mistakes you
can make … it can leave your skin feeling irritated,
dry, and flaky. It can also cause a burning sensation,
breakouts, and increased sensitivity to other products
in your routine. Your skin may develop a tight,
wax-like texture, which you could mistake for a glow
but in reality, your skin’s been stripped of essential oils.
A healthy glow will always look plump and hydrated
not dry, thin, or waxy.
Why QMS?
Fortunately, peeling with QMS is safe and effective.
The brand’s fruit acid complexes are combined
with anti-irritant and hydrating ingredients … so no
downtime, no undesired side effects and no trauma to
the skin. They are safe for all skin types and conditions,
even sensitive and problematic skin, can be used
all-year round because there is no sensitivity to the
sun, and don’t make the skin thin with a waxy ‘glow’.
Instead, your skin will appear firmer, plumper, more
even with improved radiance.
A drive-in wedding
If nothing else, living through a pandemic has forced us all to think out of the box. The idea of
hosting a ‘drive-in’ wedding was suggested to Collisheen Estate owner Wayne Hulett during the
hard lockdown as a joke. But a seed was planted and Wayne decided to go with it!
Bride Sam Pillay shared her drive-in wedding experience with us ...
Sam and Kursh always knew they
wanted to do something unique for
their wedding and when they saw
a video on Facebook of the mock
drive-in wedding, they knew this was
for them!
Although they have gone back to
hosting regular, in-person weddings,
Wayne says the drive-in concept
offered a great alternative for couples
who didn’t want to postpone their
special day.
“Our executive head chef and her
team prepared delicious canapés,
which we served directly to the
guests’ cars and the ceremony
consisted of just a minister, bride and
groom and two witnesses for the
wedding party. Family and friends
parked in an oval shape surrounding
the aisle and gazebo and could tune
in on their car radio to listen. After
saying their vows the newlyweds cut
the cake and enjoyed their first dance
in the middle of the oval with the
onlookers hooting and flashing their
lights to celebrate the occasion!”
Details of the day …
Sam considered a number of different styles and looks for her wedding, but
eventually settled on a modern South Indian style, which she felt would be
elegant and timeless but still rich and colourful. “We contacted Collisheen and
spoke to their amazing coordinator Amanda. We booked a date and planned our
wedding in three weeks! It was one of the craziest things either of us have ever
done but it turned out to be the most magical day.” Sam was styled by Teeno
Perumal and wore a traditional South Indian kanjivaram silk saree in cream and
maroon and Kursh wore a matching traditional Indian Sherwani.
“Amanda coordinated the wedding and everyone said that I was the most calm,
relaxed bride they had ever seen. She and the Collisheen team were amazing
to work with and they went above and beyond to make our day incredible!”
Despite the pouring rain on their big day, Sam and Kursh’s guests were able to
enjoy a wonderful pyrotechnic display from Terence Naidoo of Sound, Light &
Decor Technologies, as well as a live performance by singer Ashleigh Joseph.
“Our guests were treated to the most divine sweetmeats made by Faye Pramraj
of Whisked Away who also did our wedding cake. People still ask me about that
burfee! I truly believe that we had the incredible day that we did because we
worked with an absolute dream team from start to finish,” says Sam.
The couple had to postpone their dream honeymoon to the Philippines due to
travel restrictions, and as a result, Sam says, it’s turned into a ‘babymoon’ as they
are now expecting baby! “We were so grateful to have been able to have our
dream wedding in the midst of what seemed like the impossible and we are so
grateful to Amanda and the Collisheen team for making this happen.”
The bride and groom ...
Bride and groom Sam and Kush have had a whirlwind romance. They met on Instagram and moved in together within a
year. They got engaged the year after that, during the first lockdown. “Kursh is the more romantic out of the two of us and
he had planned to propose in a hot air balloon. Covid happened and we went into lockdown and so, one evening while I
was cooking, he started rambling on about how much he loves me … and the next thing I knew he was on his knees in the
kitchen with a ring? I obviously said yes!”
Wedding cakes...
with a twist!
Wedding cakes, they say, are a symbol of good luck for the couple and all the guests at the
wedding. They are also a really great way to bring some fun and creativity to your special
day. We love these slightly less traditional wedding cake options ...
ICE CREAM CAKE
Not only does our year-round warm climate lend
itself perfectly to serving your guests ice cream cake
on your wedding day, but ice cream also just makes
everything more fun and festive, right? No one does
ice cream (and ice cream cakes) quite like Amanda and
her team at Scoop. She says couples are looking for
alternatives to traditional wedding cakes and bespoke
ice cream creations are eye catching and full of flavour.
“We love creating unique cakes for all occasions. One
of my favourite cakes was for the Lifestyle Centre’s first
birthday celebration. It was three tiers, the bottom
being chocolate, the middle mint choc chip and the top
Madagascan vanilla, piled high with scoops of different ice
creams and sorbet and drizzled with melted chocolate. It
was big enough to serve 150 people!” A Scoop wedding
cake ranges from around R1800 for a two-tier cake that
serves 80 people. Details: Scoop Ice Cream, The Lifestyle
MACARON CAKE
Creative, chic and delicious … everyone loves a macaron! Madame
Macaron, based in Durban North, offer a wide range of macaron
cake options for bridal couples. Owner Viveshni says macaron
towers are an elegant, decadent, ‘out-of-the-box’ option for your
special day. The macarons can be arranged in tiers on an acrylic
stand with a cake as a topper so you can still do the traditional
‘cutting of the cake’. “Macarons afford the bride the opportunity
to have a beautiful display in her colour palette, as well as a wide
range of flavour options. You can have a ‘show-stopper’ display
without breaking the bank.” A popular choice, she says, is having
an ombre tower, with darker shades at the bottom leading up
to lighter shades as you move up the tiers. “One of our favourite
cakes to date incorporated blush pink roses on the alternating tiers.
We also had a couple with a rainbow palette and each tier was a
different colour of the rainbow.” The average price of a macaron
wedding cake is between R1350 (for 70 macarons) and R3800
(for 230 macarons). Details: www.madamemacaron.co.za, info@
CHEESE TOWER CAKE
Let them eat cake …. that is made of cheese! Some couples are opting
for a more savoury approach to the traditional wedding cake with a
cheese tower instead. Delicious, striking and perfect for cheese-lovers, a
cheese tower is also easy to decorate and the options are endless when
it comes to flavours and combinations. Owner of The Big Cheese in
Westville Sid Oertel says cheese towers are popular for weddings where
lighter meals, such as a harvest table, are being served. They are also
cost-effective and there is no wastage as the cheese can be safely stored
for later. “We always take the couple’s preferences into consideration
and guide them with their selection of cheeses, which can include mild,
strong, flavoured, blue mould, white mould, smoked etc. Cheese comes
in different shapes and sizes, so we also take that into consideration
when designing the tower. We can also use wooden blocks and wedges
to create more layers if necessary,” says Sid. Cheese towers look beautiful
adorned with fruit, flowers and even succulents! The price of a cheese
tower depends on the number of people and cheese selection, but
they range from approximately R2500 to R3500. Details: The Big Cheese:
ARTSY CAKE
If you’re looking for something really fun and different, how about
an edible work of art for your wedding cake? According to Milk and
Honey Cakery owner Janine, Buttercream painted artsy cakes are a
modern and trendy way to incorporate your theme into an artistic,
edible masterpiece. “The cake becomes the canvas and the picture
is painted with various techniques and tools that result in a textured
oil painting effect. Artsy abstract cakes are versatile, tell a story and
are intriguing to the eye.” These cakes, she says, are popular amongst
creative couples who want to express themselves. They are also
incredibly unique and can never be replicated. “This is my favourite
form of cake decorating because it is really free-spirited and you
never really know what it’s going to be until it is done. I love using
palette knifing techniques to create textured abstract pieces and
floral paintings and I always finish off with metallic accents and florals
or sugared art to add that extra sophisticated and elegant touch.”
You can expect to pay between R900 and R1300 for a single tier,
depending on the size and flavour of the cake. Details: Janine: 081 700
A VEGAN CAKE
More and more people are choosing healthier, alternative lifestyles and the vegan
diet in particular has become hugely popular. This means there are bound to be
at least a few vegans amongst your wedding guests! Having a vegan cake sounds
a bit scary, but the Propa Food Bar team are masters at creating stunning (and
very yummy) creations using super healthy ingredients. A vegan cake eliminates
all animal products, like dairy and eggs (which are usually the main components
of cakes!) and they also don’t use any gluten, flour, refined sugar or artificial
ingredients in their cakes. Owner Steph tells us that they have seen a definite
increase in people looking for healthier dessert options. “The need to prioritise
health has never been more important. Veganism (done right) includes a lot more
plants, vegetables and fruit (and thus nutrients) when compared to a standard
diet that is often laden with processed food and artificial ingredients.” Some of
their most recent cakes include their Propa Vegan Chocolate Mousse Cake, Vegan
Salted Peanut Butter Caramel Cake and Vegan Raspberry & Lemon Cheesecake –
all of which are dairy, gluten and refined sugar free! The cakes are frozen and can
be taken out half an hour before serving. They are creamy and decadent, while still
being healthy. A typical single layer cake will cost between R800 and R1000. Details:
of stone being set so simply that it
gives the appearance of the stone
floating on the finger. Skinny bands
with various shaped diamonds and
different coloured precious stones
become the feature of this ring.
2. The more contemporary version
of the classic Trilogy ring sees petite
side stones and pear cut diamonds
being a popular choice and once
again, skinny rounded bands allow
the stones to be the hero of the ring.
We are also seeing a big demand for
Trilogy rings where all three stones
are a similar size or where a striking
blue sapphire or red ruby is used as
the centre stone making a beautiful
statement.
3. Even though there has been a
subtle shift to simplicity this year, the
ever popular Halo design never fails
to deliver. With a choice of centre
stone, this stunning design can be
adapted to suit every pocket and
style. Tiny brilliant cut diamonds set
closely to frame the centre stone
add an extra sparkle to any shaped
diamond or coloured stone.
4. Every bride-to-be wants to make
her ring unique which is why bespoke
made rings are so popular. Getting to design your own ring from scratch allows
for a myriad choices in size and colour with different shaped diamonds and
coloured stones being the most popular ways to ensure each ring takes on a
style of its own.
5. A subtle addition of almost undetectable details in the ring is a highly sought
after feature. The inclusion of a secret halo is the perfect way to add a little
personality and sparkle to an otherwise simple ring.
6. While rose gold is still a popular choice, yellow gold is the most sought after
metal for rings this year. Two -tone rings are another favourite and can give a
slight vintage look to a ring.
7. To complement their wedding rings, brides are mostly choosing minimalistic
tiny claw set diamond bands or twisted bands which are worn alongside their
rings. A new trend however, has been the introduction of new bold chunky
bands which are worn alone as a statement piece.
Gents rings have followed the trend with more minimalistic bands also mainly
in yellow gold. Hard wearing black carbon fibre rings are a
practical and durable and also very popular.
ASHTON IS ON TOP OF THE WORLD!
“I am so incredibly proud of the 2020 Cambridge IGCSE students who worked so hard to achieve
outstanding results in their November 2020 IGCSE (International General Certificate in Secondary
Education),” said an elated Senior College Head, Jenny van Buuren.
“We recently received the exciting news that Sashna Govender clinched the spot
of the Top Student in South Africa for Accounting and Danielle Boshoff is the Top
Student in the World for Afrikaans as a Second Language and Physical Science. This is
a phenomenal achievement!”
Sashna Govender Achieved 98% for Accounting to give her the top spot in South
Africa. Sashna’s other marks were also fantastic, all above 92% with a 95.67% average.
She achieved 98% for Mathematics, 97% for Physical Science, 95% for Afrikaans, 94%
for English and 92% for Business.
“With 99% for Afrikaans as a Second Language and 98% for Physical Science and
an average of 96.67%, we are thrilled that Danielle Boshoff was announced as the
Top Student in the World for these two subjects”, said Jenny van Buuren. Danielle’s
other results are also exceptional with 97% for Accounting, 98% for Biology, 96% for
Mathematics and 92% for English.
Each year Cambridge rewards a number of students for their excellent results. For
the November 2020 Examinations, there were seven subjects where SA students
achieved top marks. “This year Danielle clinched the prestigious spot as the
Top Student in two subjects. Over 140 countries and 4500 schools write these
examinations. To achieve this is simply extraordinary.”
The Senior College teachers’ dedication and commitment to assisting the students
achieve excellence is evident every day, says Mrs van Buuren. Bearing in mind that
eighty percent of the preparations for these examinations were done online during
lockdown, the IGCSE students achieved a one hundred percent pass rate with an
average of five distinctions per candidate and all of the students achieved an average
of 73% and above. “I am so proud of the
students and the teachers for the hours
of work they put in. Their hard work
paid off”, concluded Mark Charlesworth,
Academic Head of the Senior College.
A true reflection of not only heart,
spirit, character and courage, but one
of dedication, commitment and having
specialised teachers at Ashton.
Collar & Comb …
following a passion
It wasn’t only doom and gloom to come out of the hard lockdown
period. In fact, many people finally found the time to follow their
passions. Collar & Comb owner Vicky Lingley is one such person.
She shares her journey with us.
“Collar and Comb was born from my
absolute love for dogs. The world came
the time I needed to put my dream into
motion. They say that if you love what
Collar & Comb is a Ballito-based dog
grooming boutique and accessory store,
offering a variety of services to suit
different breeds, coats and skin types …
and that’s not where it ends.
Vicky, determined to expand her
knowledge and services, is currently
dog nutrition and dog first aid. “I want
to give my clients the best advice. As a
proud fur-kid mom of two, Egor and Ted,
I felt that Ballito needed a pampering
parlour for pooches.”
With a focus on ensuring their fur clients
are comfortable, Vicky and her team are
patient and kind and give the dogs lots
of TLC. “From the moment we receive
them to when they are fetched, we
groom them, love them, walk and feed
them yummy natural treats to make
them feel at home.
“We offer specialized scissor cutting and
are aware that each dog breed has a
different coat and skin type and not all
can be shaved down to the bare skin.”
Collar & Comb uses the best hypoallergenic
shampoo and grooming
products and their team of six friendly
staff members, Jeff, Happy, Darlene,
Kimmy and Pearl (and Vicky) are ready
to welcome you and your fur kids with
a warm smile and loving care. They
other doggies and owners coming in
Marvellous midwives
This month, as we celebrate International Midwive’s Day, we take a closer look at the
remarkable profession of midwifery, which is much more than just a job, but a calling.
Professionally trained and highly
experienced private midwife Cheryl
Rowe has been in private practice for
over two decades. She is passionate
about helping every woman in her
care experience a birth she can
remember and cherish forever.
Birth is often accompanied by fear
and trepidation and midwives like
Cheryl aim to eliminate that, rather
bringing mothers through labour with
excitement and anticipation, knowing
that both they and their babies are
safe.
Having trained at Addington
Hospital in 1986, Cheryl specialised
in midwifery in 1993, working in
traditional labour wards for a number
of years. “I gained valuable experience
in the management of complications
in pregnancy and childbirth, but I also
realised there must be gentler options
for the birthing mother with a low risk
pregnancy.”
She started her midwifery practice,
Cheryl’s Gentle Births, 21 years
ago. She had two unmedicated
waterbirths at home herself,
strengthening her belief in a woman’s
right to choose the type of birth that
is right for her.
So, what does a private midwife
do? “A private midwife is trained
to care for uncomplicated, healthy
women during pregnancy and assist
them during active hospital births,
water births and home births. She is
trained to detect problems, both in
pregnancy and in labour, in advance,
and refer timeously should the need
arise,” says Cheryl.
Where an obstetrician/gynaecologist
is the expert in managing abnormal,
high-risk pregnancies and deliveries
(and will therefore routinely deliver
their clients using high-tech, highintervention
methods), Cheryl says
private midwives are considered
much more of the experts as far as
active birth goes. Fully supported by
an experienced team of gynaes and
Dimmed lights, minimal noise and
gentle handling are encouraged
specialist sonographers, the mantra of ‘safety first’ is always adhered
to. During active phase of labour, the mother is encouraged to
remain upright and mobile, often shortening labour significantly
and reducing the risk of needing a c-section, forceps or vacuum
delivery.
“Private midwives focus on the physical and emotional needs of the
expectant mother. What affects the mind affects the body! We also
have a very family-focused approach and dad is not the only one
allowed in the delivery room. Birth plans are encouraged as each
pregnancy and labour is unique and we use natural methods of
intervention (mobility, gravity, homeopathy) to stimulate a sluggish
labour, start an overdue one and provide the mother with pain relief.”
Cheryl says mothers may also use narcotic drugs should the need
arise. “All options of pain relief are available to you, including
epidural, however 95% of midwife-assisted births need no drug
intervention.” She says narcotic medication is only offered to moms
in hospital, to reduce the risk of side effects.
When it comes to the experience for babies, Cheryl says they can
and do experience pain and trauma during birth. “Private midwives
take measures to ensure a gentler transition from womb to world.
Dimmed lights, minimal noise and gentle handling are encouraged
and baby is placed skin-to-skin with mom or dad for the first hour.”
There is also postnatal support, with visits either in hospital or at
home to assist with breastfeeding and do physical checks on both
the mom and baby.
Her main goal, Cheryl says, is always to ensure that the mother
experiences a wonderful birth, whether that be a natural birth
or caesarian section. “I truly believe that it is just as possible for a
woman who has an emergency caesarian to feel like she has had a
wonderful birth as it is for a woman who has her baby at home. The
key is not what happened, but that you were able to participate in
the decisions taken and make an informed choice.” Details: Cheryl’s
Teen
skin
woes
Teen years can be very stressful...
especially as you experience a
number of ‘firsts’. Navigating your first
skincare routine can be particularly
confusing. Qualified dermatologist
Dr Cebi Sibisi shares some advice for
dealing with teen skin concerns.
58 Get It • Ballito Umhlanga May 2021

“It’s as if, all of a sudden, your
hormones have all teamed up and
decided to hit you with a one-two
punch of oily skin and acne, and
you’ve got to figure out how to deal
with that,” says Dr Sibisi. “There is
also so much information on social
platforms adding to the confusion,
and often some of the ‘DIY advice’ can
end up being more detrimental to the
skin.”
One of the most important things to
remember, she says, is that apart from
dealing with current skin concerns
caused by hyperactive sebaceous
glands, the products your teen uses
will set up their skin for later in life.
“My single most important piece of
advice is to always keep it simple and
when in doubt seek professional help,”
she says.
Acne is the most skin concern for
teens. Dr Sibisi shares some advice:
“The golden rule for cleansers
is looking for a gentle foaming
cleanser, which helps with oiliness
or something with salicylic acid to
fend off acne without excessively
drying you out. On the moisturising
front, opt for a lighter, oil-free lotion
to avoid clogging the already overactive
pores. Don’t be tempted to skip
the moisturiser, this actually makes
matters worse. Where there is mild
acne, a benzoyl peroxide product can
help. Introduce this slowly and with
caution to avoid irritation. This is one
of the gold standard acne-fighting
ingredient because it immediately
targets the source of acne breakouts.
“We often talk about how retinoids should become a part of anyone’s night
skincare routine by the time they hit their late twenties, but the vitamin A
derivative can be ultra-effective for teens too. Retinol also helps with acne, so
it’s helpful in both the short and long-term. A good SPF is a non-negotiable at
any age. Slather an SPF 30 or more on every morning as the final step in your
routine for protection for which your skin will be thanking you for later (trust me).
To make things easier for teens, I always recommend a good moisturiser which
already has a sunscreen (minimum SPF30).”
Again, Dr Sibisi encourages parents to seek professional help if their teen’s skin
looks serious or is not responding to over-the-counter options. “Never apply
apple cider vinegar, toothpaste, lemons or whatever else the latest ‘influencer’
recommends! It may end in tears!”
Hidden acne triggers to avoid: Poor diet high in dairy products, not cleansing
your face twice a day, being too harsh on your skin (over-cleansing with abrasive
scrubs, using harsh skin aggravating ingredients - if it stings or hurts it’s probably
bad for your skin.), going to bed with makeup on, hair styling products (very
oily or waxy leave-on hair products can track to the face and cause break outs
especially on the forehead), inconsistent skincare
Drink spiking is a sad, scary reality when it comes to parenting a teen. But it no longer
needs to be. Meet Drinkerbell ... a clever new initiative founded by a determined
businesswoman and mother of five.
“Drink spiking is rife. My daughter’s
drink was spiked not too long ago
and she nearly died. Some girls sadly
do.” These are the heartfelt words
of entrepreneur, mother of five and
founder of Drinkerbell, Peach Piche.
“This is not a nightclub or barman
issue, it is happening at house parties,
in restaurants and pubs and even
at corporate golf days. Don’t ever
assume you’re safe because you
don’t drink alcohol! Spikers don’t
know or care what’s in your glass.
My daughter Skyla’s drink was spiked
at an upmarket local restaurant at
7pm. The effects were horrendous -
physically, mentally and emotionally.
It took her two months to recover
and for the blood in her eyes to
subside. More importantly,
she could have died,” says
Peach. “Unfortunately, some
girls have died as a result and
others have been assaulted,
robbed, raped and callously
murdered. And it is not only
young girls being spiked, we
have up to eight people a
week (even women in their
sixties) reaching out to share
their stories.”
Peach’s philosophy is that
everything in life happens for
a reason.
You can choose to be a
60 Get It • Ballito Umhlanga May 2021
Drinkerbell
to the rescue
‘victor’ or a ‘victim’ so she chose to partner with her daughter Skyla to see how
they could turn the mess into a ‘message’ and prevent incidents like this from
happening to any other girls or women.
“Drink spiking is a crime and, like with any crime, there needs to be a criminal
mind and opportunity. Which is why we founded Drinkerbell - an initiative
designed to raise awareness around drink spiking packaged with a potentially
life-saving product: a scrunchie that turns into a drinks’ cover to minimise risk.”
Girls can wear the scrunchie in their hair or on their wrist at all times and, when
ordering a drink, simply open the secret compartment in the scrunchie and slide
out the waterproof drinks cover, and eco-friendly, reusable silicone straw. This
is a visual and physical deterrent for any would-be spiker as they are more likely
to target someone with an open drink, plus the cover makes it impossible to
deposit drops or tablets into the glass.
Because this project is so close to her heart, Peach says she wanted Drinkerbell to
do more than just solve a problem and protect women. “It had to tick two other
boxes: empowering women, which is why all manufacturing is done by

women who have been upskilled and
employed by Embocraft Trust, as well
as have a ‘give back’ arm, which is why
a portion of all sales goes to the Jes
Foord Foundation to sponsor trauma
counselling for women who have
been raped.”
What started out as a motherdaughter
project, has now become
a platform for Peach and Skyla to use
their voices to raise awareness, make a
difference and save young girls! Their
dream is for the project to become a
movement to #stopdrinkspiking!
“As pubs, restaurants and bars fill
up and people venture out, it is
imperative that drinks are protected
- even at house parties. Date-rape
drugs like Rohypnol, GHB and
Ketamine are used because they are
not easily detected, and victims often
do not remember being drugged or
assaulted until hours later.”
According to Peach, girls are in
even more danger if they have preexisting
conditions that the spikers
(criminals) do not know about, which
is often the cause of girls having
trouble breathing, suffering from bad
reactions or even dying.
Drinkerbell founder Peach
Piche and her daughter Skyla
“Drink spiking happens. It is so much
more prevalent than you think. I
recently spoke at a women’s business
event and, of the 23 ladies in the
Baby’s superfood
Weaning your baby onto solid foods is an exciting part of the parenting process. As
your little one gets bigger so do their nutritional needs and they start needing to derive
their energy, protein and minerals like iron and zinc needs from food. Highly nutritious,
versatile, affordable and yummy, introducing eggs into your baby’s diet from early on in
your weaning journey is a great idea! Here’s why …
• Allergy awareness: While we do, understandably, worry about
introducing potentially allergenic foods like eggs to our baby’s diet, the
truth is that the risk of food allergies is far less common than believed.
Also, experts suggest introducing potential allergenic foods as soon as
weaning is started to actually reduce allergy risk.
• Brain boost: Researchers believe choline, an important nutrient
for optimal brain and nervous system function (and found in eggs),
contributes to healthy brain development and function in early
childhood. Eggs also package other key nutrients for brain health, like
protein, iron, zinc, vitamin B12, and biotin.
• Grow baby grow: Research also shows that egg-eating youngsters
may have better growth and development. Also, maintaining a healthy
weight is very important and it is a known fact that eating eggs keeps
you fuller for longer (helping to manage the weight of older kids, if
needed).
• So tasty: Whether plain or mixed with vegetables and cheese, wellcooked
whole eggs are recommended for your baby’s diet. Omelettes,
scrambled eggs or French toast are all quick and easy ways to start your
child’s journey of healthy eating.
FRENCH TOAST WITH
BLUEBERRIES
You’ll need: 1 egg, 2 tablespoons milk,
½ teaspoon vanilla essence, small
pinch cinnamon, 1 slice day old bread,
1 tablespoon (15g) butter or oil
To make: In a bowl, mix together eggs,
milk, cinnamon and vanilla essence.
Heat the butter or oil in a non-stick
frying pan over a medium heat. Dip
bread into egg mixture and coat
both sides well. Put dipped bread
into hot pan and cook for two to
three minutes on each side or until
golden. Serve warm with a spoonful
of cream cheese or with sliced banana
or blueberries. Tip: You can use up any
leftover bread for this recipe. Try sliced
French bread, fruit loaf or multigrain
bread for something different.
Treasures of Africa
We’ve got wild flower reserves and red-necked spurfowls, walking safaris and the
treasures of Africa though the pages of these great books.
Walking safaris are one of the best ways to explore our
parks and reserves, and Walking Safaris of South Africa
is a great place to start. With close to 60 guided walks,
there’s everything from short dawn and dusk walks to
multi-day backpacking trails, from ultra-luxurious to
wild camping under the stars. There are stories by hikers
Hlengiwe Magagula and Denis Costello of tracking lions
and elephant snacks (to inspire or scare) and masses of
jolly useful info. Struik. • Gamebirds of Africa boasts being
the definitive field guide, and this full-colour handbook
includes everything you need to know to identify the
89 species, and is a useful addition to the libraries of bird
enthusiasts. Jacana. • In Pangolins – Scales of Injustice,
Richard Peirce blends facts with fiction – keeping the story
as close as possible to what’s likely to have happened on
a journey of a pangolin poached in Zimbabwe and taken
to Joburg to be sold to a waiting trafficker. He includes
methods and stats of the trade, explains the links between
wildlife and Covid-19, and details China’s response to the
unfolding drama of the pandemic. Struik. • Beginning at
Melkbosstrand just north of Cape Town, and ending where
the Orange River meets the Atlantic Ocean, The West
Coast explores a captivating part of South Africa, and
reveals a bounty of treasures that give the West Coast, or
Weskus as locals call it, its particular allure. Leon Nell takes
you on a trip through seaside villages and inland towns,
exploring the history, fauna and flora and interesting
attractions along the way. Struik.

Big skies. Vast plains. Scrubby bushes and hardy trees. Flat-topped mountains and conical hills
and secluded valleys. The Karoo. A place where dreams are born, legends are made, and outcasts find sanctuary.
A place where human lineage predates any written history, whose story is revealed through geology, fossils
and artefacts. Those of us who’re lucky enough to have travelled through and stayed in the Karoo know its
beauty … a beauty that’s been captured through a series of astonishing photo-essays in Hidden Karoo.
This coffee-table book offers readers a snapshot of the region, with a glimpse into towns and villages, farms
and churches, public buildings and private homes, all against a backdrop of awe-inspiring landscapes.
Patricia Kramer and Alain Proust’s book will delight fans of the area … and tempt those who’ve never been to
explore the incredible Karoo (which derives from the Khoekhoe word karus, meaning dry, barren or thirsty land). It’s
a book you’ll spend hours reading, with fascinating new facts on every page. Magnificent! Struik.
