Can you believe it??? FIFTEEN YEARS and still 

going strong. As a thank you to all our lovely 

readers we have an amazing fifteen prize

This time last year was the first time ever that 

we were unable to print our magazines. It was 

an awful time for everyone but luckily our 

business survived. Many others haven’t been 

so lucky and some are still struggling to stay

Rhubarb is about the only thing I grow with any

DOG THEFT: WHAT YOU CAN DO

Dogs are the most 

commonly owned pet in 

the UK. With more of us 

choosing to own a dog, 

sadly this has led to a rise 

in dog theft. Below are a 

number of preventative 

steps you can take to 

reduce the chances of your 

dog being stolen. 

Stay Alert: It’s important to be aware of any 

suspicious behaviour such as anyone approaching 

dog owners to ask them lots of questions about their 

dog. If you notice unusual markings in front of your 

house, report them. Keep up to date with online local 

community groups. Don’t hesitate to contact the 

police by calling 101 if you witness any suspicious 

behaviour. 

Preventative Measures: Even the most basic of 

security steps can help to reduce the risk of your 

pet being stolen. Avoid leaving your dog unattended 

outside in a public space or in your car. Secure your 

garden. Try not to leave your dog unsupervised in 

the garden. Installing security cameras can act as a 

deterrent. If dog thefts are common in your area, this 

may be something to consider. 

Protecting Your Dog From Dog Theft: Ensure 

that your dog is microchipped. All puppies must 

be microchipped by 8 weeks of age by law, and 

definitely before they leave their breeder. Make sure 

your dog is wearing a collar and has an accurate ID 

tag without your dog’s name on. Recall training is 

particularly important. 

What should I do if my dog goes missing? You 

should report this immediately. Here is a list of who 

you should inform as soon as possible; the Police via 

101; your neighbours; local community online pages; 

your local council; your vet and other local practices; 

local animal rescue centres; the database with which 

your dog’s microchip is registered.

Fifteen Years 

of Lunches 

Tale 

Fifteen years sharing an office (and lunch time) with 

these girls – what can I say? What goes on (or gets 

eaten) in the office stays in the office…or it did until 

now. 

Looking back at the last fifteen years a lot has 

changed. Babies have been born, pets have come 

(and gone), houses have been bought and sold, kids 

have flown the nest and then come back (grrrrr) but 

one thing has remained a constant. Our collective 

obsession with food and, no coincidence, but also our 

weight. 

Lunchtime at NG mags HQ is always midday. It’s the 

absolute earliest we can get away with, although Cat 

has been known to crack at 11.45. Then it becomes 

like feeding time at Twycross. Heads pop over desks 

like meerkats to see what everyone else is eating. The 

envy is palpable if you have a soggy, limp salad while 

across the desk someone is tucking into a cheese and 

ham toastie. 

Over the years our customers and contributors have 

treated us to burgers, pork pies, pizza, graze boxes, 

samosas, Indian wraps, cream cakes, cup cakes, 

strawberry cakes and the list goes on, but you get the 

picture. Food is a big part of our day. 

There was a point about eleven years ago when Cat 

was on maternity leave and Sarah and I totally lost the 

plot, creating huge lunches for each other every day. 

Toasted bagels, half a sharing pack of crisps each, 

salad, piles of couscous and hummus. At the time I 

genuinely couldn’t understand how I had managed to 

put a stone on in six months. It was all healthy stuff 

– apart from the crisps – but we had absolutely no 

portion control whatsoever. 

We finally came to our senses when neither of us could 

do our jeans up. But then, typical of us girls, we went 

completely the other way and jumped feet first into the 

5:2 diet. That was fun…not. 

For those not familiar with this diet, you eat normally 

5 days a week and on 2 days you limit your calorie 

intake to 500. That’s 500. For the whole day. Just a 

note about the definition of “normally”- for Gary (who 

I persuaded to join in as well) this meant a full-on fry 

up on “normal” days and a bottle of wine, although 

not at the same time. All in the name of research, you 

understand, to see if the diet would still work (it did). 

The novelty of trying to find anything tasty and filling 

with virtually no calories soon wore off. Even now, if I 

dare to mention cauliflower rice to Gary, he breaks out 

in a cold sweat and reaches for the takeaway menu. 

Not content with starving ourselves, we had to prove it. 

After watching a programme on the telly that showed 

us how to check whether our bodies were burning fat, 

we were straight on to Amazon ordering ketone sticks. 

You had to wee on the stick (a messy business) and 

wait to see what colour it went. That particular craze 

lasted about a week. I still have a pack of these sticks 

- a lasting reminder of how ridiculous we were! 

The next fad was a detox and sugar free diet. Sarah 

gave up after 35 minutes, complaining of a headache. 

The rest of us limped on for another few days before 

we all cracked, the sweet bag was ripped open and 

another diet bit the dust. 

The best idea we have ever had was our Wednesday 

lunch club. No fat free nonsense. No sugar free. No 

low calorie. Just homemade, healthy food. 

Although I have to say, even now we can tell you the 

calories in a double dipped chocolate toffee - and mild 

panic rippled through the office yesterday when we 

realised Sainsbury’s rice cakes had 10 more calories 

that the Asda ones. Old habits die hard!!

CHILDREN HELP LOCAL SENIOR 

CITIZENS

Carlton resident, Jenni Holding, has launched 

an exciting new business creating and delivering 

boxes of delicious food. 

Hazy Graze was started during lockdown when 

Jennie matched her passion for food with an idea for 

a high quality food delivery service. 

Always up for a lunchtime treat, we ordered a couple 

of boxes to munch on while we were holding a staff 

meeting. 

We ordered a box called The Main Event (pictured 

above) – three meats, three cheeses, felafels, 

hummus and plenty more besides. We also decided 

to order a ploughman’s box – think pork pie, sausage 

rolls, grapes, cheese, celery and baguettes along with 

amazing pickles. They also do an amazing afternoon 

tea with homemade cakes and scones. 

As usual our eyes were bigger than our bellies and 

there was plenty left for the following day. 

The boxes are £25 each, delivered, which is pretty 

good value considering the amount of food you get 

and the love that has clearly gone into preparing 

them. 

If you are wanting to treat someone or even if you 

want to spoil yourself then we wouldn’t hesitate to 

recommend Jennie and Hazy Graze. Find them on

Kind-hearted school children from Netherfield 

Primary School designed and created 100 Easter 

cards for members of Netherfield and Colwick 

Senior Citizens Club. 

Loneliness is tough to deal with at any time, and 

especially so during the recent lockdowns. And if 

you live alone, as many older people do, feelings of 

isolation are often exacerbated. 

At a recent online meeting of the Co-op Gedling 

& Netherfield Forum, common themes emerged 

of loneliness and isolation in various community 

groups, including the Senior Citizens Club. The Coop 

Member Pioneer for Netherfield, Alison Marsh, 

suggested that the schoolchildren of Netherfield 

Primary School could make Easter cards for the 

Senior Citizens, and the head of the school, Jon 

Crone, readily agreed. 

Jon said, “It was such a positive message for our 

young children in Years 1 and 2 on their return to full 

schooling. They were able and very willing to provide a 

ray of sunshine for others in their community.” 

The cards, with postage funded by the Co-op, were 

much appreciated by the Senior Citizens. Maureen, 

82, said “My card is a real keep-sake, and it is so nice 

to be thought of in these difficult times.” Peter, 74, 

agreed: “Thank you so much, you have made my day. 

It’s been a tough time lately on my own a lot, and I will 

treasure my card.”

In the Pink 

I love rhubarb. As a kid I remember being given 

a stick along with a cup of sugar and happily 

dipping and munching my way through it. 

Luckily for me it is very easy to grow and I 

have two decent plants in the garden that are 

already looking good with absolutely no eff ort 

on my part. 

Botanically rhubarb is a vegetable but the 

beautiful pink stems are treated as a fruit. For 

years I didn’t know what forced rhubarb was, 

however now as a rhubarb farmer myself I 

have discovered that it refers to rhubarb that 

is grown in warm, dark conditions from late 

December until the end of March. The stalks 

grow up in the hope of fi nding light. This 

variety is less fi brous than the outdoor variety 

and has a more delicate fl avour. 

I cannot wait to start harvesting my crop. 

The gin recipe opposite is so easy and tastes 

absolutely lovely. I have mine with tonic and 

ice. It also makes a lovely gift (not that I give 

much away!). The cake is a bit more of a 

challenge but so worth it. Enjoy!

Rhubarb Crumble 

Cake 

Rhubarb Gin 

1kg pink rhubarb stalks 

400g white caster sugar 

800ml gin 

Method 

Wash and trim the rhubarb stalks. Cut 

into 3cm lengths. Put into a large kilner 

jar and add the sugar. Give it a good 

mix round and leave it for 24 hours so 

the sugar can draw the juice out of the 

rhubarb. Then add the gin. Seal the lid 

and give it a good shake. Put it away for 

4 weeks. When ready to drink – strain 

the gin through a sieve lined with muslin 

into a jug and then bottle. 

Rhubarb and Ginger 

Chutney 

250ml cider vinegar 

100g golden caster sugar 

300g chopped rhubarb stalks 

40g pitted dates 

2 tsp ginger – grated 

1 cardamon pod 

Method 

Heat the cider vinegar and sugar in a 

heavy bottomed pan until the sugar has 

dissolved. Then add the rhubarb, dates, 

ginger and cardamon. Cook for about 20 

mins until the rhubarb has broken down 

and the mixture has turned into a thick 

chutney. Season with salt. Place into a 

sterilised jar. Will keep for up to 3 months 

– if it lasts that long! Delicious served with 

cheese and crackers. 

This is more of a pudding than a cake. 

Delicious served with custard or cream. 

For the roast rhubarb filling 

400g rhubarb – chopped into 1” 

slices 

150g sugar 

1 x orange (zest & juice) 

For the cake 

175g unsalted butter (softened) 

300g ground almonds 

170g soft brown sugar 

1tsp vanilla extract 

2 x eggs 

For the crumble topping 

70g unsalted butter 

70g plain flour 

70g soft brown sugar 

70g oats 

50g chopped walnuts 

Method 

First, roast the rhubarb. Heat oven 

to 200°C. In a small roasting tin mix 

rhubarb, sugar, zest & juice of the 

orange. Roast for 10 mins until soft and 

smelling delicious. Leave to cool. 

Next, make the cake. Grease and line a 

deep 20cm spring form cake tin. Heat 

oven to 180°C. Beat butter and sugar 

until light and fl uffy. Mix in eggs and 

vanilla extract. Add ground almonds and 

mix thoroughly. Gently fold in the roasted 

rhubarb (not the juice) and pour mixture 

into tin. 

For the topping, rub the fl our and butter 

together between your fi ngers until you 

have clumps. Rub in all other ingredients 

and cover the top of the cake. Bake for 

60 mins. It should be a very moist cake, 

almost like a pudding.

GEDLING library - HERE WE GO AGAIN!

As I write this it is looking hopeful that things 

could be returning to closer to normal than we’ve 

seen for a long time and this includes in the 

County’s libraries. 

Libraries could re-open on 12th April under the 

Government’s roadmap and Gedling Library once 

again opened its doors to the public. As has been 

the case since June 2020 there is a limited service, 

reduced opening times and limits on the number of 

people in our buildings. However, please keep an 

eye on our website, www.inspireculture.org.uk, as 

what we offer will change as things start to open 

across other sectors. 

From 12th April, Gedling Library’s opening times 

are: 

Tue & Sat 10am – 1pm 

Thursday 1pm – 4pm 

Our Click & Collect service has been very popular 

during the latest lockdown and we will continue to 

offer this for anyone who is not yet ready to come

commemorative woodland 

created in country park 

u3a celebrate annual event 

by Mapperley & District u3a 

by Gedling Borough Council 

Councillors have announced the creation of a new 

Community Orchard as well as plans for a new 10 

acre commemorative woodland at Gedling Country 

Park 

Over 20 native trees have been planted, including 

apple trees, heritage pear trees, damson trees and 

cherry trees. All of the trees originate from the 

Nottingham area. 

The new orchard will also play a vital part in 

supporting local wildlife due to the produce created 

from the trees. The tree planting is also part of the 

council’s pledge to plant 500 new trees, which has 

already been exceeded, as they have now planted 

1,050 trees and more are planned over the next year. 

The new 10-acre woodland area will be an addition 

to the 230-acre park and is being created as part 

of the council’s plans to create a more sustainable 

environment and to continue its work to become a 

greener council. 

Deputy Leader of Gedling Borough Council, Councillor 

Michael Payne said “Over the last year, we have lost 

so many local people to covid and other illnesses 

- we want to create a place where people can go to 

remember those who they have lost and where local 

residents can enjoy our great outdoors. As a former 

colliery, our beautiful Gedling Country Park is a symbol 

of recovery, renewal and hope - that’s what we need 

more than ever over the next few weeks, months and 

years as we build back better and stronger together.” 

The local u3a movement is embracing the 

opportunity to celebrate all that u3a stands for and 

raising awareness of our activity and learning with 

our u3a Day taking place on 2 June 2021. 

u3a Day is set to celebrate the new experiences 

that come from being in your third age (no longer in 

full-time employment). The annual event will take 

place in Volunteer Week showcasing the amazing 

and diverse things that our members get up to and 

challenge preconceptions of what being an older 

adult means. The 2021 event will be enhanced 

by the multitude of projects, activities and new 

approaches to communication that have emerged as 

a consequence of the lockdown periods. 

There are more than 1,000 u3as in the UK including 

34 in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. Each u3a 

runs itself with an elected committee of volunteers. 

Every u3a has a variety of interest groups such as 

study groups for learning a language. Other popular 

topics include family and local history, sciences, 

various aspects of literature, film and theatre to 

name but a few. Popular creative groups include 

writing, photography and crafts. Gardening, walking 

and cycling are firm favourites. You can even start 

your own group.

It feels like forever since we made plans, but with Spring in the air and lockdown 

restrictions easing, it’s time to tentatively look at ‘What’s On’ in and around our 

wonderful city over the next couple of months. 

As always, I recommend you ring ahead or check online 

before making any journeys, and as we progress through 

the Government roadmap, do ensure that you remain 

within your social bubbles and respect social distancing 

measures in place. 

The great British weather can usually make or break 

outdoor events, but this year they seem the most likely to 

go ahead. While many of us have made the most of our 

walks outdoors to escape recently, a few more organised 

events are starting to appear in the calendar. 

Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre is offering to help us 

spring out of hibernation and into a forest adventure with 

your little wild ones with their Spring Nature Detective 

Pack. Can you complete all the challenges and spy what 

is bursting to life? Pick up one of the seasonal packs, 

containing family nature activities for the forest. Sat 1/ 

Sun 2/ Mon 3 May. 

No booking required. Please note that all activities can be 

purchased by card payment only. 

Belvoir Castle plays host to a 1940’s Weekend 22 - 23 

May from11am - 5pm. Join them for a long awaited reopening 

of the castle and gardens and celebrate like it’s 

the 1940’s! Street Party, fairground rides, re-enactments, 

war vehicles, tales from veterans, live music, and much 

more. Bring your picnic along, or if it’s time for someone 

else to do the cooking – enjoy the food and drink options 

on offer! The event is included with a Castle & Garden or 

Garden Only Admissions tickets dated Saturday 22nd or 

Sunday 23rd May. 

Alternatively get your walking shoes on and bring along 

your pooch to The Big Dog Walk on 30 May. Choose 

between a 2km, 5km or 10km route on the day of your 

walk. Once the walk is completed, you can explore the 

Event Village. Grab a coffee or snack whilst your dog 

enjoys taking part in a variety of exciting free activities! 

There will be fi ve walk start times to manage capacity. 

Choose between a 10:30, 11:30, 12:30, 1:30 and 2:30 

walk, and arrive up to 1 hour before your start time to 

have a sniff around before the walk starts. There will be 

walk leaders on each route and you can stop off along 

the way at the castle’s pawsome pit stops for a drink and 

a rest. 

Inflatable Family Fun Days are taking place at Mellish 

Rugby Club on the 3 rd , 4 th , 5th & 6th of June! Advanced 

tickets will be available to buy and collect from the club 

on 2nd of June. Tickets will still be available on the day, 

subject to availability. There will be no online ticket sales 

due to the event being weather dependent. All necessary 

measures will be in place to make the fundays covid safe 

and safe for all the family to enjoy. 

For something a little different, bag yourself a bargain 

at The Mapperley Safari Sale taking place on June 

6. Digital and paper maps will be available so you can 

go from house to house. Basically everyone has a yard 

sale on the same day. Homes taking part will pay a small 

charge to be included which will go to the Haywood Road 

Community Centre, a charity, run by volunteers which has 

not been able to generate income during lockdown, so 

this will be a great help. 

Cycle Live will take place on Sunday 23 June at Victoria 

Embankment Nottingham and is not an event to be 

missed. 

There are still many virtual events taking place online, but 

oh how we’ve missed live entertainment! Fingers crossed 

we will be returning to our local theatres and music 

venues in June. Dust off your dancing shoes as it looks 

like the fi rst event to take place at the Theatre Royal 

may well be a celebration of the music of Tina Turner as 

What’s Love Got To Do With It? visits (26 Jun). 

With many of us taking staycations this year, keep a look 

out for local tours and history on our doorstep. One of 

our local fascinating attractions is Creswell Crags where 

you can explore the historic limestone caves with your 

family or household group, under the guidance of one of 

the expert tour guides. Whether you choose Life in the 

Ice Age or Witch Marks in Robin Hood Cave, or Rock 

Art in Church Hole, you’re sure to learn something new, 

have a fun adventure, and be awed by how many stories 

of the past come alive. Tours are for household bubbles 

of people who do not need to socially distance from each 

other; there will not be space for guests to always socially 

distance from each other within the cave.

Hardy sages for 

the flower garden 

Most people’s introduction to 

the wonderful world of salvias 

is either courtesy of sage, the 

well-loved herb grown from 

time immemorial for its culinary 

and medicinal value or perhaps 

the bright red bedding plant 

Salvia splendens traditionally 

planted with blue lobelia and 

white alyssum for a truly patriotic 

display. However, hardy, 

perennial salvias are becoming 

increasingly popular as great 

garden plants for people and 

bees. These are not all edible 

but make a wonderful, longlasting 

display in the garden. 

There is a vast array of perennial 

salvias to choose from including 

many tender types, but this 

time I’m focusing on the hardy, 

perennial European types that 

are great for most gardens. 

Of the European species, the 

best for general garden use are 

the wood sages and these are 

varieties of Salvia nemorosa, 

sylvestris and superba. They 

grow in dry or moist soils and 

can be grown in light shade or 

a sunny spot. They grow well in 

alkaline (chalky), neutral or mildly 

acid soils. Add lime annually if 

planting in extremely acid soils. 

They have rough leaves and 

short spikes of fl owers from 

June through July. If you cut 

them back hard after fl owering, 

they will normally oblige with 

more fl owers in late August into 

September. The planting distance 

for these is about 12-18in / 30- 

45cm apart. 

They come in many shades of 

blue, pink, violet and white and 

vary in height from 1ft / 30cm 

through to 3ft 6in / 105cm. 

Snow Hill and Blue Hill (properly 

called by their German names 

Schneehügel and Blauhügel) 

are the shortest ones I grow 

and are snow-white and skyblue 

respectively. Among my 

favourites are the slightly taller 

May Night (indigo blue) and 

East Friesland (blue) and the 

lovely Rose Queen (pink). 

The newer variety Caradonna 

grows to about 2ft / 60cm tall 

and has lovely blue fl owers and 

black stems in summer adding to 

their drama. 

One of the tallest is the aptly 

named Amethyst which grows to 

3ft / 90cm or slightly more. This 

one has a long fl owering period 

from June to September or even 

October without the need to be 

cut back at all. 

Of course, there are also many 

ornamental varieties of the 

herb sage for growing in a 

free-draining, sunny spot and 

you can fi nd types with purple, 

golden and variegated leaves.

The Life and Times of Netherfield Lagoons 

by Graham Smith 

Netherfield Lagoons are a local nature reserve 

very popular with bird watchers and walkers 

alike. The area draws large crowds on Autumn 

evenings to watch the extensive starling 

murmurations. 

The site has been managed by Gedling 

Conservation Trust since 2005, when the area 

was purchased from UK Coal. This is only the 

latest incarnation of the site, however, and it has 

had many other uses over time. 

Gedling Colliery was active from 1899 to 1991. 

Around 1970, part of the now nature reserve 

site, was acquired for the development of slurry 

lagoons. The purpose of these was to filter 

waste water being pumped from the colliery 

to the river. Water was first pumped into the 

lagoons and the solid matter allowed to settle. 

The filtered water was then released into the 

river. 

In 1792 the Gedling Inclosure Act was passed. 

This was part of a nationwide process to 

consolidate small landholdings into larger 

farms. Inclosure involved the mapping of land in 

the area to establish who had rights over it and 

to mark out roads and boundaries. As part of 

this process the line of the present day Victoria 

Road was established. 

The area where the lagoons now are was then 

farmland known as Hesgang Pastures. One side 

consisted of a series of small holdings, called 

the Old Trent Closes. Strangely though, when 

the land was mapped, it was discovered that 

Hesgang was actually part of Radcliffe Parish, 

on the other side of the River Trent. 

The clear implication of this being that the 

river had altered its course over the years 

and originally flowed closer to what is now 

Netherfield. There is some evidence of a water 

course alongside the present day railway line, 

which supports the idea of the Trent looping the 

other side of the lagoons site. 

The site’s initial departure from purely 

agricultural use came with gravel extraction. 

This began in the 19th century and continued 

for decades. Coupled with the extensive railway 

yards that existed alongside, from 1875 to 1970, 

the area was a hive of industrial activity. 

Looking across the former slurry pit towards 

Netherfield 

The slurry lagoon is now a rapidly developing 

reed bed. The Deep Pit, intended for slurry, 

but never used due to the colliery closure, is 

now a lake. The gravel pits are also now lakes, 

attracting many species of birds and insects 

and providing a fantastic local resource.

The story of Zack Snyder’s Justice League is one of 

the most peculiar in recent memory. After a family 

tragedy, Snyder left production on Justice League in 

2017 and Warner Brothers brought in Joss Whedon 

to reshoot and re-edit the film. This resulted in a 

choppy mess that felt incoherent and very mixed in 

its tone and overall sense of storytelling. After years 

of fan outcry for a ‘Snyder cut’ of the film, we were 

finally given what we wanted almost 4 years after the 

film’s initial theatrical release. 

Zack Snyder’s Justice League is a triumphant 

comeback for the controversial director. He rounds 

off his trilogy of DC films in an appropriately epic 

way that will leave fans of DC satisfied and begging 

for more. This is truly Snyder’s vision come to life and 

it doesn’t feel bogged down by studio interference. 

It’s a love letter to fans of the comics and serves 

as a powerful testament to what can be achieved 

through passion for the craft. Despite the film having 

a few issues here and there, mostly regarding the 

script, the 4-hour runtime is utilised very well to craft 

likeable characters and an engaging story, allowing 

it to become a far superior film to what we got in 

2017.

FULL METAL JACKET 

Stanley Kubrick is ultimately known for mastering the 

cinematic art of screwing with your head, whether it 

be in a claustrophobic hotel complex or the vacuum 

of space. Nearly 35 years after he captured the 

psychedelic and moral hell of the Vietnam War, how 

does Full Metal Jacket’s screaming war-face stand? 

This film can essentially be considered in two separate 

halves. The first, centring on the brutal process of recruit 

training, focusing on ruthless drill sergeant Hartman 

(played astoundingly by R. Lee Ermey) ordering each 

private through backbreaking training, and villainously 

punishing anyone with a hair out of place, to transform 

these trainee ‘maggots’ into war-thirsty killers. The nonstylised 

cinematography, unlike Kubrick’s other famous 

works, plays well into the training-montage element, 

creating a claustrophobic feel as you’re arrested into the 

paranoid perspectives of the privates with the complete 

absence of sound except the barking of orders and 

responses. The sudden shift in cinematic tone in the 

first half’s finale shows more of Kubrick’s auteur touch 

still-present in an unfamiliar environment. 

Full Metal Jacket’s second half, however, doesn’t quite 

hold up as well. Our now-hardened recruits move onto 

an all-out war montage in their Vietnam outposts. While 

the concrete jungle violence and moral questioning 

faced by the wise-cracking military journalist, Joker, 

certainly entertain, the tropes seem quite overly-familiar 

even before the film’s release. 

While not the milestone in war films to the extent of 

previous achievements, Full Metal Jacket remains 

an iconic classic filled with some of cinema’s 

most brilliantly-colourful dialogue and arresting 

performances, though its quality in terms of uniqueness 

condenses mostly into its first hour. Now before you let 

those eyes wander off the page, answer me this! You 

got a war face?

You can’t take it with you 

We’re all going to die. 

That probably got your attention, but don’t worry this 

isn’t meant to be morbid. Moreover it’s a reflection 

that despite everything that we own, ultimately it’ll all 

just end up in a jumble sale, charity shop or rubbish 

tip at some point. How have I got to this point of lowbrow 

philosophy? Well, funny you should ask. 

We recently moved out of our house as we had 

substantial building work planned. With both my 

wife and I working from home and the children in 

enforced home-schooling it would have been almost 

impossible for us to stay where we were while the 

house became a building site. So we upped sticks for 

a period and plain old moved out (yes, it’s a very first 

world, middle-class solution and I’m fine with that). 

With the planned evacuation looming we had to 

decide just how much stuff we needed to take with 

us in order to survive (again, middle-class survival 

not Ray Mears). Basically our kids told us what 

they needed: wi-fi password, computer for homeschooling, 

Xbox, and access to phones. It was up to 

us as parents to remind them they needed clothes, 

food, books and running water. Eventually we got all 

our necessary possessions together and moved out of 

the family home. 

And it’s been great. 

We’ve just got on with life. It’s had its ups and downs, 

and we’ve returned to the house a few times to pick 

up the odd thing. But all in all we haven’t missed the 

things we left behind. Which is odd as when we’re at 

home (the aforementioned building site) we think we 

can’t do without the things we own. 

I have a lot of hobbies, probably too many to 

be honest. I enjoy making and painting models, 

drawing, playing guitar, computer games, reading, 

watching movies. But I’m not pining for all of my 

art equipment, a pencil and sketchbook has been 

enough. And I don’t need an entire bookcase of 

novels, I brought three with me. We’ve also all got 

by with a limited wardrobe (no doubt helped by the 

fact that we can’t be as social as in previous times) 

and despite how much I love my coats, and I love my 

coats, I’ve just about managed to get by with one. 

Now I’m not advocating you throw every possession 

away and join a commune that rejects modern 

trappings, but it’s an interesting lesson that you can 

more than happily cope without the things you think 

you need. 

But here’s the thing, there are some things that we just 

want to keep, even though we don’t use them. Maybe 

it’s because they say something about ourselves that 

we like to be reminded of. Or maybe it’s a projection 

of how we want to be perceived. Or maybe we just 

enjoy owning things. For example, last year we got 

rid of almost every CD we owned which we thought 

would be a big deal but it turned out not to be as 

we stream our music nowadays. But when it came to 

books the wife and I had a much stronger emotional 

connection and we really struggled to get rid of many 

of them. Every book seemed to remind us of a time or 

place, or were part of a lovely matching set that look 

really nice on a bookshelf, or were ones we wanted to 

keep in the hope that our children will investigate our 

interesting bookshelves at some point in the future 

and pick up the books that we have lost ourselves in. 

Or not. A good friend of mine once said that one 

of the biggest delusions you have as a parent is that 

when you die your kids will take ownership of all your 

lovingly collected possessions. Whereas in reality 

they’ll probably sell them, give them to charity, or 

toss them in the bin. Don’t get me wrong, I’d hope 

they’d keep something to remind themselves of their 

old dad but I’m under no illusions that they will want 

my rather large collection of unfinished sketch books. 

So there you have it. A short insight into what 

happens when I have too much time to think and not 

enough of my possessions to distract me! I think we 

will declutter the house a bit 

more, there is only so much 

space after all.

The Road to Recovery 

Well, here it is… normality is 

getting a few steps closer. 

We’ve either become the best version of ourselves in 

lockdown or waited to create the best version once 

we are back to ‘normal’ life again. 

Either way, it starts today. Reading this right now you 

get to make a choice in what you do with your health 

going forward. 

There are always three main focuses to consider 

toward improving health. 

1. Nutrition 

When it comes to nutrition, eating the stereotypical 

diet of chicken, rice and broccoli isn’t how long 

lasting results are achieved. You want an approach 

that you enjoy, with foods you know and love so it 

doesn’t feel restrictive. This is an area we spend a lot 

of time on with our members. Dieting doesn’t need 

to be painful. 

2. Exercise 

To produce any result, we need to know our intake 

and expenditure numbers. We can’t just move more 

and expect a result if we don’t know what we are 

putting into our bodies and the numeric values 

of this. We have to work out the calorie deficit 

otherwise that’s a whole lot of moving for very little 

reward. 

Don’t neglect resistance training (building lean 

muscle) over cardio for fat loss. The more lean mass 

we have, the faster and easier it is to maintain a 

healthy weight. It will also, in time, allow you to eat 

more food, as you’ll need more fuel to exercise. WIN, 

WIN! 

3. Mindset 

This area is EVERYTHING and, in my opinion, the 

most important area of focus. If you aren’t ready, 

aren’t honest with yourself and find it easy to place 

blame elsewhere, your mindset will be challenged 

and you’ll think that the result isn’t possible. 

The change you are about to undergo will feel 

difficult at times, you’ll feel like giving up and you’ll 

question if it’s possible. 

These three areas are the staples of any 

transformation we undertake. They also blend into so 

many other areas of our lives and are based around 

the belief you have in yourself to make the change 

possible. One bad day doesn’t mean it’s a bad week. 

So don’t let the outcome defeat you before you’ve 

begun to see the result you deserve. 

2021 may have started off a little rocky, but it doesn’t 

have to end how it began. You get to write your 

story… and that story can begin today.

The Covid-19 pandemic has brought with it a 

renewed interest in outdoor activities, particularly 

walking. The absence of alternatives has seen 

our pavements and path networks a lot busier and 

people eager to seek new routes. 

Ordnance Survey maps, in particular to 1:25,000 

scale Explorer series are very useful but can be 

somewhat bewildering. Fortunately there are 

various guides available to help find suitable walks 

in and around Nottingham. These, combined with 

either paper or electronic copy of Explorer sheet 

260 for Nottingham, are a great resource. Here are 

three that you might find useful: with details easily

Wolds takes in many villages. Starting at Bunny in

Keyworth, Plumtree and Clipston. From there it 

goes south to Stanton before turning back north 

to Cropwell Bishop and the end of the route at 

Cropwell Butler. The area has a rich history, a lot of 

it described in the brochure. As NWW is linear you 

can either simply turn back and re-walk it back to the 

start, or work out a different way on the many paths 

and lanes back to your starting point. 

100 Walks From The Poppy & Pint -

Riddiough and will be of interest to those in West 

Bridgford, particularly those living in the Lady Bay 

area. This work, now in three volumes, is the fruit 

of Trevor’s labours during lockdown. The Poppy 

and Pint’s location in Lady Bay is great for access 

to the River Trent, Holme Pierrepont Country Park, 

the Grantham Canal and a host of other places for 

walking. The pub’s owners, Castle Rock Brewery 

host the walks on their website, set out in three 

volumes. All the walks are circular, so there is no 

problem getting back to your starting point! 

The Nottingham

circumnavigating the 

city of Nottingham, and divided into 12 sections. 

It celebrates the villages and countryside around 

Nottingham, and explores its rich tapestry of local

of the north-west to the alluvial plains of the Trent 

and Soar with its small villages in the south-east. 

The route is 60 miles in total, so each mile walked 

represents a minute on the clock face (hence you 

can claim it as ‘a mile-a-minute walk’!) Each section 

has good links by bus or tram to get you to the start 

and from the finish.

our future climate, our decision

Based on the title of this piece, you may be 

rolling your eyes and thinking “Great, another 

young person preaching about the environment.” 

However, as a young person I still don’t feel like 

we are being listened to. It would be great if you 

could spare 5 minutes to read this article. If we all 

do our bit it will make a difference. 

Plastic pollution. What is it? By definition, it is 

determined as the accumulation in the environment 

of synthetic plastic products to the point where they 

create problems for wildlife and their habitats as well 

as for human populations. Interestingly however, 

plastic waste reflects humanities lack of recycling, 

highlighted by the fact that the UK only recycle one 

quarter of plastic (the remaining three quarters are 

what go on to destroy wildlife). 

This is such a massive issue, due to the 

degradability of the material itself. The composition 

of plastic is chemically formulated in such a way 

that it can take over 400 years to fully degrade. 

Within this time, it gradually collects and gathers 

- eventually consuming our oceans. The largest 

recorded plastic gyre (plastic garbage patch) in 

the ocean is situated in the North Pacific (between 

Hawaii and California) and is 1.6 million square 

kilometeres. 

Facing these sorts of statistics, though shocking, is 

necessary. The prevention of any further, alarming 

facts is also immensely important. That is why, 

even the smallest of measures, can help to reduce 

the global plastic pollution crisis. From carrying 

your own, reusable metal water bottle, to venturing 

into the world of second-hand furniture: minimal 

changes can add up to produce a big difference. 

Currently, only 4% of British households get a milk 

delivery service. By finding a milkman who uses 

glass bottles that can be reused and recycled you 

are doing your bit. 

Globally however, the management of plastic 

waste must be more strictly controlled. Recycling 

sorting facilities need to increase the specificity 

within sorting plastics in order to ensure maximum 

efficiency. This will prevent more unnecessary 

plastic waste. A conscious effort to actively avoid 

environmental ignorance can be the catalyst to a 

better, less polluted ocean. 

The occurrence of pollution not only greatly 

threatens the survival of wildlife; but also threatens 

food safety, human health, coastal tourism, and 

climate change. That is why, now more than ever, 

it is crucial we address the plastic pollution crisis 

while there is still time to do so. As a young person, I 

am desperately fearful of the world I will grow old in. 

I am anxious for my future children - for the places 

they will play and the water they will drink. It is easy 

to dismiss these concerns, hide them away as they 

are “too far off”, yet time flies. 

Educate yourself on recycling. Small changes make 

a BIG difference.

workplace 

A new multi-use games area and table tennis 

tables are just some of the new additions planned 

for Onchan Park, Carlton. The work is expected to 

take a few weeks and the park will be closed while 

the improvements take place. 

The refurbishments include a brand new multi-use 

games area, suitable for playing football, basketball 

and cricket, new surfacing will replace the existing 

tarmac at the site making it safer for users, an 

additional entrance will be created from Onchan 

Avenue and an improved footpath suitable for 

disabled park users as well as pushchairs will give 

access to the new facilities. 

Improvements are being made thanks to funding 

from FCC Communities foundation, a not-forprofit 

business that awards grants for community, 

conservation and heritage projects from funds 

donated by waste and resource management 

company FCC Environment through the Landfill 

Communities Fund. FCC Communities Foundation 

will be providing a grant total of £58,265 for the park 

refurbishments. 

The funding bid was made jointly by Gedling Borough 

Council and The Friends of Onchan Park, a local 

residents’ community group which formed in 2016 

to help look after the park as well as allowing the 

local community to have their say in how the site is 

managed. 

Hasn’t it been uplifting hearing about the random 

acts of kindness and compassionate interactions 

experienced by some over the past year? 

Not just individuals but businesses stepping up to 

support their workers or benefit local charities to help 

those in need. Some days it’s been so inspiring seeing 

the best of humanity on the news or on social media. 

My Instagram feed is full of these feel good accounts. 

However it’s disturbing to also read and hear about 

the not so nice effect of the pandemic on some. Not 

everyone has felt the need to carry on with the Be Kind 

campaign which was everywhere just before lockdown. 

In the workplace Covid seems to have brought 

out the worst in some bosses and intensified poor 

leadership that was already there. Manipulative and 

passive-aggressive behaviours have got worse in 

many instances where the pressures of managing a 

workforce through the pandemic has been challenging 

to say the least. ACAS report that their coronavirus web 

advice portal has seen 3.6 million visitors and the ACAS 

helpline experienced a three-fold increase in calls. Their 

dispute resolution service also saw higher demand. It 

seems that there’s a lot of unhappy people out there. 

The challenges of working from home have included not 

only isolation and anxiety in many but also stress in the 

form of surveillance 24/7. According to a Gallup survey 

less than half (45%) felt strongly that their employer 

cares about their wellbeing. Add to that an employer 

arrogance that people who ‘need’ their jobs will just 

have to put up with it and it’s a recipe for stressful 

workplace relations. 

What to do? Maintain your own values – just because 

your boss is behaving badly doesn’t mean you have 

to reciprocate. Respectfully confront your manager 

– challenge the behaviour. As the economy begins to 

reopen and recover bad managers will inevitably be 

exposed as employees choose to find themselves a 

better boss.

What is Pension Credit? 

Pension Credit is a tax-free payment which tops up weekly income to a 

guaranteed minimum. From April 2021, the minimum rates will be £177.10 a 

week for single people and £270.30 for couples who have both reached state 

pension age. 

Entitlement to Pension Credit might help you access other benefits. For 

example, if you’re at least 75 years old and receive Pension Credit you can 

claim a free TV licence. 

Who can claim Pension Credit? 

To qualify, you must have reached state pension age and live in Great Britain. 

You can still receive Pension Credit if you: 

• have not paid National Insurance contributions 

• have savings or a small pension 

• live with grown-up family 

• own your own home 

How do you qualify for Pension Credit? 

There are four main considerations when working out whether you qualify for 

Pension Credit. These are: 

• your age 

• the age of your partner, if you have one 

• your weekly income 

• how much money you have in savings 

Where I can find out if I qualify for Pension Credit? 

You can find out whether you qualify online via the Pension Credit calculator:

How do I start my claim for Pension Credit? 

You can start your application up to four months before you reach state 

pension age. You can claim any time after you reach State Pension age but

Knife Crime Team Doubles In Size 

A specialist police team committed 

to driving down knife crime in 

Nottinghamshire now has even more 

teeth after doubling in size. 

An extra sergeant and six police 

constables have beefed up the numbers 

on Nottinghamshire Police’s successful 

Knife Crime Team, increasing its capacity 

to tackle violence and crime, remove 

dangerous weapons and drugs from the 

streets and keep people safe. 

It’s a welcome boost to the force’s 

ongoing work to further reduce knife 

crime by working closely with partners, 

including Nottinghamshire’s enterprising 

Violence Reduction Unit, and by using a 

combination of engagement, education 

and enforcement. 

The boost in numbers comes after 

latest official figures by the Office for 

National Statistics show that knife crime 

in Nottinghamshire reduced by 4% in the 

year end to September 2020, compared 

to the previous year. 

Nottinghamshire’s fall in knife crime 

was in stark contrast to the regional and 

national picture (East Midlands regional 

average rise of 2% and nationwide fall of 

3% across England and Wales). 

The new Knife Crime Team recruits are 

based in Mansfield but can be deployed 

anywhere in the county, acting on 

intelligence and targeting those involved 

in criminality. 

They will also work closely with fellow 

Knife Crime Team members in the city, 

combining their resources effectively to 

help keep communities safe. 

The force has been able to swell the ranks 

of the Knife Crime Team due to being 

at the forefront of the national police 

recruitment drive through Operation Uplift, 

which is recruiting hundreds of extra 

officers to the force’s front line while also 

becoming more representative of the 

communities it serves. 

The new team members are determined 

to build on the proactive knife crime 

team’s impressive statistics last year 

which included: 

• 276 people arrested 

• 485 drug seizures 

• 175 vehicle seizures 

• 363 people reported for summons 

• 450 weapons seized since team’s 

inception in 2016 

• Over 35,000 miles patrolled across 

Nottinghamshire 

As well as strong enforcement 

action to crack down on knife crime,

intervention officers who are dedicated to 

working with children across the county 

as part of its prevention work.

and intensive preventative intervention 

work. A key driver helping to steer young 

people away from knife crime and 

violence is the Violence Reduction Unit 

which continues to work with vulnerable 

individuals and families to help make a 

difference to young lives and put them 

on the road to a safer and more positive 

future. 

Street outreach workers, a custody 

diversion scheme and other initiatives 

including the Ben Kinsella Trust at the 

National Justice Museum also serve to 

educate young people and help them to 

make positive life choices.
