SIFCo’s latest film 

release 

‘Living with Fire’ 

The Slocan Integral Forestry Cooperative 

(SIFCo) is releasing a film that looks at current 

and future threats from wildfire in the 

Slocan Valley. 

This educational film provides adaptive 

action steps residents can take to be prepared 

for this dynamic threat by reducing 

the wildfire risk on their properties. The 

project was partially funded by the Columbia 

Basin Trust and the ‘Community Resiliency 

Investment Program’ administered by 

the Union of BC Municipalities. 

The film is part of the educational component 

of the Slocan Valley Wildfire Resiliency 

Program being delivered by SIFCo on 

behalf of the Villages of Slocan, Silverton, 

and New Denver. The vision of the program 

is to help create fire-adapted communities 

that are knowledgeable and engaged, where 

residents and agencies take action regarding 

infrastructure, buildings, landscaping, and 

surrounding ecosystems, thereby enabling 

communities to safely accept fire as a natural 

part of this bioregion. 

Creating fire-adapted communities has 

never been more important with wildfires 

increasing with intensity and frequency 

fueled by a changing climate that is making 

weather patterns less predictable and 

more extreme. This is due to a culmination 

of hotter summers, longer drought periods, 

and changing winter weather patterns, combined 

with decades of wildfire suppression. 

In addition to the increased threat from 

wildfire, the population is also growing in 

rural fire-prone areas where the wildland 

meets infrastructure and homes. The combination 

of these factors in the Slocan Valley 

creates the potential for a wildfire disaster 

to occur. 

To mitigate and prepare for wildfire 

SIFCo has been implementing a Strategic 

Landscape Level Wildfire Protection Plan 

for the Slocan Valley for the past 12 years. 

This plan involves fuel treatment in areas 

identified as main fire movement corridors 

throughout the Slocan Valley. The plan utilizes 

five different treatment types, including 

the thinning of second-growth trees to 

reduce fuel loads and latter fuels, and the 

re-introduction of prescribed burns in historically 

fire-maintained ecosystems.

The bears are back 

and so is WildSafeBC! 

While the COVID-19 pandemic may continue 

to keep many of us at home, that is not 

true for the bears and other wildlife that live 

nearby – the bears are awake, and they are 

hungry! WildSafeBC is the provincial leader 

in preventing conflict with wildlife through 

collaboration, education and community 

solutions. The program is delivered by the 

BC Conservation Foundation in communities 

across BC. 

Brian Montgomery is

WildSafeBC Community 

Coordinator for 

Kaslo and Area D 

and will be working 

hard to reach 

out and work with 

community members in 

new and innovative ways 

that maintain physical 

distancing and safety for the community. 

From April to November, Brian will be 

involved in several WildSafeBC modified 

program initiatives including door-to-door 

information delivery campaigns, garbage tagging, 

information booths and webinar delivery 

of our highly requested WildSafe Ranger 

Program for school-aged children, as well as 

our Wildlife Awareness and Safety Education 

sessions. We hope that we will also be able to 

host limited, outdoor in-person workshops 

once the number of daily COVID-19 cases

New mural to lift spirits 

at Trail hospital 

The Kootenay Boundary 

Physicians Association 

(KBPA) has commissioned a 

massive mural to be painted 

on the north and west wall at 

Kootenay Boundary Regional 

Hospital (KBRH) Trail by 

local Kootenay muralist Tyler 

Toews of Canadian Murals. 

The idea, which grew from the 

positive energy of last year’s 

Gratitude Garden installation, 

will flourish throughout May 

2021 on the hospital’s back 

entrance. 

Initially, Dr. Sue Benzer, 

KBRH Chief of Staff, inspired 

by the smiles the Gratitude 

Garden project at the back 

entrance brought to staff, proposed 

a smaller mural to go 

behind the garden. When Dr. 

Sue Babensee (project lead), 

the KBPA working group and 

board explored options, the 

idea expanded into a 21m 

x 16m 3-D commission for 

Toews. 

Known for his passion 

about nature, Toews’ colourful 

murals can be seen on Nelson 

City Hall, the Rossland 

Cenotaph, and the BC Children’s 

Hospital. KBdoctors.ca 

are keen to share the progress 

of this exciting, one-of-a-kind 

project. They will record and 

post the mural’s development 

up the wall with a weekly 

video posted every Friday

colourful, anamorphic design 

that will create an optical illusion 

as it interacts with the 

architecture of the building. 

Featuring a large red ribbon 

that forms a heart of gratitude,

KBPA physicians teamed 

up to work out an inspired 

mural mission. “We wanted to 

give everyone associated with 

the hospital and in the community 

a visual that would 

lift their spirits,” said Dr. 

Babensee, “We felt this was so 

important as we all work our 

way through the pandemic 

and other health challenges 

together. It will hopefully be 

both a reflection of what we’ve 

achieved and motivate us to 

move forward.”

Interior Health (IH) for this 

exciting art 

adventure.

March 21, 1991 – April 25, 2021 

My name is Benton Davie. I chose to make the north 

my home about 10 years ago as a young man who 

did not know what he was looking for, much like my 

maternal grandfather many years before me! The north 

is famous for its hospitality and it did not fail me. I was 

instantly hooked by the rugged winters, endless summer 

days, strong sense of community, friends I made and 

mainly and unexpectedly, the aviation industry so vital 

to my new city. 

I was hired by Great Slave Helicopter and I knew almost 

immediately that this was something I could turn into 

a lifelong career. I transferred into the apprenticeship 

program to begin working towards becoming a licensed 

Air Craft Maintenance Engineer. I enrolled at Red River 

College, Stevenson campus and was accepted into their AME 

apprentice program. Over the next four years I 

worked towards this goal, and continued to enjoy 

travelling and working all over both the 

Northwest Territories and Nunavut. I have done 

well academically and am proud of my achievements. 

I plan to work in Yellowknife as I feel it provides scenarios 

and opportunities you can find nowhere else in 

the world. I of course, do not know what the future 

holds but I know mine will involve helicopters and 

Yellowknife.

THE HOPE 

The Cold 

it was never ending as if being restocked 

by God himself, 

it numbed his extremities and froze his lungs, 

it commanded the Arctic floor into a steady 

mass of lifeless permafrost, 

It was death. 

The Snow 

it tasted him and wanting more 

clung to his naked face, 

each flake was so beautiful so unique, so worthless, 

it attacked without mercy 

possessed by wind and hatred. 

It was death. 

The Sun 

it applied rays of light praying they would 

reach the fragile trees that blemished the tundra, 

it was the colds, the snows only enemy 

as it battled to warm him, it had been shining 

without a flicker for over two days, 

It was hope. 

As you can see, 

Benton was happy with his choices and 

took opportunities to work with biologists 

and contribute to the research part of his 

tours. He met friends he loved, colleagues he 

respected, and joined a community he felt a 

part of. 

On April 25, 2021 Benton and two others 

were flying in the Eastern Arctic in an 

Airbus AS350-B2 when a problem 

occurred and the helicopter went down. 

There were no survivors. 

Ben was 30 years old.

family and friends, know that you share our 

grief and are very thankful for your support. 

Be gentle with each other as we all move 

forward in our new reality without our 

beloved son, brother, cousin, nephew,

Gardening is beneficial in various 

ways. Some of the health perks associated 

with gardening include 

improved mood, increased vitamin 

D levels (which benefits bones and 

immune system) and reduced risk 

of dementia. In addition, if gardening

a conclusions... that 

we might all agree 

on. 

If it is a moist 

damp spring, 

there is no need 

to soak your 

beans. Once the 

soil has reached 

and maintained a 

space or for those with 

mobility issues, container 

gardening can be an 

ideal way to grow everything 

from flowers to 

vegetables. Most plants 

are not fussy about the 

containers in which they 

grow so long as some 

of their basic needs are 

met. This means watering 

correctly for the type 

of plant, and ensuring 

sufficient drainage. 

The following are some 

other ways container gardening 

efforts can prove 

successful. 

• Watch water. Plants with thin 

leaves typically need ample water, 

and plants with thick leaves need 

less. Use this as a guideline to gauge 

water needs. 

• Size correctly. Plants should be 

sized to the container. Consider 

minimum of 9ºC you can 

plant your beans directly 

into the soil. A damp 

warm spring will sprout 

your beans with out your 

help. 

In a dry spring with little 

rain, it may be in your 

best interests to soak your 

beans before plating them 

out in the warm soil. 

Otherwise, follow the directions 

on your 

seed pack, or 

do what your 

mom taught 

you to do, paying 

attention 

to the climate 

at the time 

of planting.

• Choose the right 

soil. Fill containers 

with a commercial 

potting soil rather 

than soil from the 

garden. Garden soil 

can dry into a solid

and other ingredients 

to help with soil 

texture and moisture retention. 

• Mix it up. When planting containers 

of flowers and other greenery, 

include “a thriller, a spiller and a 

filler” as a good rule of thumb. The 

thriller is the focal point, the spiller a 

trailing plant, and a filler has smaller 

leaves or flowers to add bulk and 

colour. 

• Poke holes. Drainage holes are essential 

so that soil will not become 

waterlogged. Holes don’t need to be 

large, but there should be enough of 

them so that excess water can drain 

out readily. 

• Select the right container material. 

Container materials may be affected 

by gardeners’ budgets, personal taste 

and other factors. 

Container gardening is a healthy 

and enjoyable activity that can pay 

dividends in various ways.

Building activity in the RDCK 

Building activity in the Regional 

District of Central Kootenay 

(RDCK) remains at record levels 

as we pass the first quarter of 

2021. Through the end of March, 

inspections completed by building 

officials are up 50% over last year at 

this time and permits issued are up 

46% over this time last year as well. 

Throughout this high growth 

period, our small pool of dedicated 

RDCK building officials, as well 

as, administrative and technical 

support staff continue to provide 

prompt, quality and professional 

building services to the community, 

despite working with limited 

staff resources and a high volume 

of work. Current processing time 

for building permits is approximately 

six weeks, though processing 

times can be longer as staff are 

now spending more time in the 

field completing inspections and 

less time in the office. 

“We appreciate your patience 

and understanding during this 

extremely busy time,” said Christopher 

Gainham, RDCK building 

manager. “We recommend 

all potential applicants prepare 

accordingly for extended processing 

times as we deal with unprecedented 

demand.” 

To reduce the likelihood that an 

application is rejected or delayed, 

applicants should ensure they come 

prepared with a “counter ready 

application”, meaning the application 

is complete and free from 

errors or omissions. By doing so, 

you will help reduce processing 

time and do your part to make sure 

your project stays on schedule. 

To assist applicants in navigating 

the building process, the RDCK 

has produced some useful online 

resources, including our permit 

application information page. The 

RDCK Building Brochure provides 

useful guidance on the requirements 

when applying for a building 

permit.

Pride exhibition: call for content 

In 2016, Justin Trudeau became the 

first Prime Minister to walk in a Pride 

Parade, and subsequently broke the 

internet from Victoria to St. Johns. That 

same year, Nelson held its 20th annual 

Pride Parade, where hundreds of people 

gathered on Baker Street, and MLA 

Michelle Mungall tossed candy to facepainted, 

flag-flying children. 

Touchstones Nelson: Museum of Art 

and History, in partnership with Kootenay 

Pride and the Queer community, 

are mounting an historical exhibition 

on the legacy of LGBTQ2S+ folks in the 

Kootenays this summer, and are reaching 

out to the community for stories, 

photos and artifacts to include in the 

show. 

“In an effort to ensure that a multitude 

of voices are included and as many 

stories and perspectives are represented, 

the exhibition working group is putting 

a callout for people who may have been 

involved with Kootenay Pride over 

the years or who are part of queer history 

in the area to reach out and share 

your stories, photos, videos, costumes, 

and ephemera,” explains Touchstones 

Nelson’s Public Program Coordinator 

Stephanie Myers. 

The exhibition will explore the 

celebrations and 

the challenges 

facing the local 

Pride movement 

throughout the 

last 50 years, 

and highlight 

the considerable 

contribution the 

queer community 

has made to 

the region. 

The exhibit will include a film created 

by Watershed Productions, which will 

highlight the LGBTQ2S+ community 

over the decades. 

This short documentary 

will use 

archival materials 

in the collection at 

the Shawn Lamb 

Archives, as well 

as materials provided 

by the larger 

community.

Bringing the pictures into focus 

Dealing with Covid has 

brought changes for the West 

Kootenay Camera Club. Last 

year the 30th Anniversary 

Photo Competition Show was 

cancelled. 

WKCC president Bob Dyke 

decided that 2020 would not 

stop the club. It was a time for 

reflection and updating the 

WKCC. 

Zoom meetings were held twice a month. 

The WKCC teamed up with other camera 

clubs in BC and the Yukon for educational 

webinars. Speakers shared their tips and 

advice on different types of photography. Also 

various members of the WKCC shared their 

knowledge and the club continued its mandate 

of education. 

One change was the update on 

the WKCC website. 

Dan Salekin and a 

small group of volunteers 

reviewed the old 

website and decided to 

bring it into the 2020s. 

The new website will be 

up and running soon. 

WKCC is open to all 

who love photography

aware, the Rodger Stewart Legacy Award 

is given to a member of the FLNRORD 

team who exemplifies an indomitable 

spirit, a commitment to public service, 

and a dedication to their work, their 

co-workers and their community. 

This year, I received many great 

nominations from staff, wishing to 

honour a special colleague with this 

award. Although the final decision 

was challenging to make, I thoroughly 

enjoyed reading all the submissions 

(very heartwarming!). I am proud 

to work in the South Area with the 

people who were nominated. I want 

to say thank you to those who made 

a nomination, the sheer number was 

amazing! 

The recipient of the 2020 Rodger 

Stewart Legacy Award is Murray Pearson. 

Sadly, this is a post-humous award 

dedication, as Murray passed 

away in August of 2020. There 

were many nominations for Murray, 

and all of them highlighted 

not only his passion for his work as 

Fisheries Technician and caretaker at 

Meadow Creek, but also 

some of his work in the 

community of Kaslo, as a 

hockey and baseball coach, for example. 

For his unwavering support for his colleagues 

and his community, his loss left a 

hole that will be hard to fill. 

Although Murray had a very different 

leadership style than Rodger, he 

was very much a leader. Murray had a 

willingness and desire to go above and 

beyond the call of public service, and for 

these reasons, I am honoured to present 

this award to Murray. I know that 

his colleagues will likely hang the award 

with pride (in the Nelson office), in fond 

remembrance of Murray. 

Please join me in taking a moment to 

honour Murray Pearson, winner of the 

2020 Rodger Stewart Legacy Award.

Salmo: Canada Day 

celebrations cancelled 

The Village of Salmo Council has made the very tough decision 

to cancel the Salmo Canada Days Celebrations again for 

the 2021 year. Considering the current state of COVID-19 

and since celebration planning must start soon, the council 

decided that it is not safe to plan and host a large community 

event like this at this time. We do hope to hold a joyful celebration 

of Salmo’s 75th anniversary in October 2021. 

The village continues to follow all COVID-19 provincial 

guidelines and takes the health and safety of our residents very 

seriously. It is our hope that the Canada Day celebrations will 

be able to be happen again in 2022. 

Thank-you to everyone for your understanding. We look 

forward to seeing you on Canada Day July 1st, 2022.

Mt Sentinel student named 

Loran Scholar 

Grade 12 Mount Sentinel 

Secondary student, Tala 

MacDonald, is one of the 30 

exceptional young Canadians 

who has been selected from a 

pool of 6,084 applicants to be 

named a 2021 Loran Scholar 

this spring. 

Each year, the Loran Scholars 

Foundation conducts a 

nationwide, comprehensive 

scholarship selection process, 

seeking applicants who 

demonstrate a firm commitment 

to character, service 

and leadership potential; 

breadth in academic and 

extra-curricular interests; 

integrity; and a high level of 

personal autonomy. 

In this time of immense 

change and challenge, the 

newly selected scholars 

have shown grit and resilience, 

finding ways to make 

the most of these extraordinary 

circumstances and 

meaningfully serve their 

communities. 

When it comes to serving 

one’s community, Tala’s 

strength of character and 

commitment to helping others 

is nothing short of exemplary. 

She demonstrates this 

as a volunteer firefighter and 

medical first responder in 

her community, as a team 

leader for environmental 

initiatives at her school, and 

through her involvement in 

an international service and 

intercultural learning project, 

where she helped build 

homes in Oaxaca, Mexico for 

impoverished families. 

Tala was first encouraged 

to apply for the Loran Scholarship 

in the fall by her school 

counsellor, and the strength 

of her application led her 

through both the semi-final 

and final selection process. 

“I went into the interview 

nervous and not knowing 

really what to expect,” said 

Tala, “But it was so incredible 

to be able to connect with 

alumni and other candidates 

from across the country, and 

to hear their experiences.” 

The Loran Award is 

Canada’s largest and most 

comprehensive four-year 

undergraduate award. What 

makes this award unique 

is that it is not a reward for 

past accomplishments, but 

an investment in a potential 

future path of high impact. 

Loran poses a lifelong challenge 

to its 

scholars to live 

outstanding 

lives of character 

and take on 

significant leadership 

roles, 

which will positively 

impact 

their communities, 

Canada, 

and the world 

around us. 

Tala accounts 

growing up in 

a tight knit community and 

being raised with the mindset 

to help others for her desire to 

make a difference. “I look at the 

issues of the world, and it can 

be overwhelming, but I believe 

I can make a positive change by 

helping others” said Tala. 

Through a creative lens, 

Tala’s passion for the arts, 

both visual and performing, 

has also influenced her ability 

to have an impact both in 

and out of school. “She’s an 

outstanding kid,” exclaims

teacher. “Tala’s contribution 

to our program over the past 

three years has been exceptional.” 

Tala is also an active 

member of an extracurricular 

theatre group and was 

recently the lead contributor 

for a collaborative production 

focused on truth and 

reconciliation. 

Loran Scholars receive a 

renewable four-year award 

comprising an annual living 

stipend and matching tuition 

waiver from one of the foundation’s 

25 partner universities; 

funding for tri-sectoral 

summer work experiences 

(in enterprise, public policy, 

and community development); 

one-on-one mentorship; 

and the opportunity to 

connect with other high-potential 

youth through forums 

and scholar gatherings. Following 

their undergraduate 

studies, Loran Scholars are 

welcomed into an engaged 

alumni community, in which 

former scholars connect and 

collaborate through regional 

hubs and larger reunion 

events.
