Goodbye 2020, hello 2021!
Welcoming a new year, only means one thing ... it is time to start thinking (if you
haven’t already) about your 2021 marketing strategy. It is a perfect time to reflect
on your losses and celebrate your wins, but also a time to critically evaluate your
marketing activity from the past 12 months and piece together your plans for the next
12 months.
For many, 2020 marketing plans and strategies were scrapped due to Covid-19.
Even in these unique circumstances, it is still a great time to reflect on the
performance of your activities and build to make your marketing strategy and plans
for 2021 better.
You must build your strategy for a purpose, whether that be for growth, an increase
in revenue, or retention. An annual marketing plan and strategy set you up to make
your business goals a reality. Think of it as a detailed plan that helps guide you and
your team to achieve your goals!
The first thing you need to do is reflect.
Ask yourself these five simple questions:
- What did you achieve?
- What did you not achieve that you wanted to?
- What worked well?
- What failed?
- How have your current campaigns been performing?
2020 was a year of firsts for many, especially within the digital world with the speed
digital marketing was adopted by everyone in the global lockdowns. It is important to
keep the analysis accurate and work with the data in front of you, rather than
preconceived beliefs of what could have been achieved. By asking yourself these
five simple questions, it will give you a great idea of what to take forward with you,
what to adapt, and what to leave in 2020.
Market research
New opportunities arising and keeping your offers competitive are essential to
staying competitive within a market. A great way to gain valuable insight is by
speaking to your customers within your practice by asking them what they would like
to see within 2021. A simple survey can help understand your customers and
uncover new opportunities that you may not have even thought of!
Setting your budget
Before being able to implement any ideas from your marketing strategy, you need to
know the budget you have to work with. This is essential, by not knowing you are
creating extra hurdles for your business to achieve the set 2021 goals!
Top Tip: Whilst mind mapping ideas, ensure that you make a note of an
estimated budget. This can include any new technology you may need to
purchase or a timeline of when you will need to invest to grow! You may want
to look at spending your budget on technology to be able to deliver virtual
events or experiences.
Tactics and actions
The techniques you choose within your marketing strategy will drive your business
forward, so you must make sure these actions reflect the current climate that we are
currently in.
As many of us are placed into another national lockdown, it is safe to say that
Covid-19 has already impacted our marketing strategies. The techniques you take
forward need to be realistic and adaptable.
Thought: You may want to spend this time optimising your current tactics
rather than adventuring into new ideas. For example, if your website needs
some updates, now would be a great time to optimise your channels so it is
effective when reaching and communicating with your clients.
Tracking results
When you have your marketing strategy, it is important to track any marketing
results. This is important from launching a new service to driving brand awareness,
this will highlight to you what is working, and what is not. This will help you go
forward with effective knowledge on where to spend your marketing budget which
will help develop strategies that drive results.
Your marketing strategy should be something that you continually evaluate and it is
never set in stone. It is never too late to adapt any marketing changes which will help
maximise your results.
