FORUM WORKSHOP forumworkshop
Traditionally, small stores are staffed by family
members or from the pool of unskilled or semiskilled
labor; a transient labor market of mostly
young people more interested in short-term
employment than a career in retail. That pool
of young
prospective
f
employees
will soon
shrink while
the number of
available mature
workers
will increase.
Whoever is hired, you’ll need to offer employees
more then an hourly wage. A specialty store
depends on forging personal relationships with
its clients. For those to endure, shoppers expect
to see familiar faces. To establish and retain
those relationships, you must do whatever you
can, within reason, to retain staff. That could include
offering a benefit package attractive
enough to make the job in the store a career, or
offering star employees a profit-sharing plan or
limited interest in the store’s long-term performance.
You’ll also be expected to be a good neighbor
to your community and customers. That means
much more than sponsoring a Little League
team. Environmental awareness and concern
for the underprivileged, once regarded as political
activities, today speak of your commitment
to your community. Today’s consumer
expects involvement. They’ll prefer to spend
their money with firms that share their sense of
social responsibility.
