A summer kids’ event called Treasured VBS will be hosted at Family Life
Assembly of God, 24911 Roesner Road, Katy from Monday, June 14 th to
Thursday, June 17 th . At Treasured, kids discover God’s greatest treasure
isn’t diamonds, gems or gold - it’s them! Kids participate in memorable
Bible-learning activities, sing catchy songs, play teamwork-building
games, experience one-of-a-kind Bible Adventures, collect Bible Memory
Buddies to remind them of God’s love and test out Sciency-Fun Gizmos
they’ll take home and play with all summer long. Plus, kids will learn to
look for evidence of God all around them through something called God
Sightings. Each day concludes with the Closing Quest that gets everyone
involved in living what they’ve learned. Kids at Treasured VBS will join a
mission project effort to provide mosquito nets for draping over beds to
protect kids while they sleep. The nets will be distributed all over the worldwherever
mosquitoes may carry malaria. Treasured is for kids from 3 years
old and toilet trained to kids who just finished 5 th grade and will run from

Howdy! Our names are Kai, Cazden, Robbie and Jack, we are four SLHS Alumni
and Texas Film School Graduates. For the past year we have been creating
Katy’s newest and only Animation and Filmmaking camp, Creator Camp! Our
goal is to share with students the wonders of film and animation without the
dullness of note taking and lectures. We designed our 3-day camps so that
students will learn hands-on and in real-time, creating Special effects, Green
Screen effects, Sound effects and loads more. Each day, students will come
home with a new movie they created themselves and on the last day we will
transform a classroom into a mock Oscars Film Festival where your child will
pick their favorite film that they made to be shown on the big screen! We are
running our first camps this summer and we would love to have some support
from the local community to get us off to a good start. Camps are held at

Celebrating its 40 years of service to Houston and Texas, Crime Stoppers
of Houston will host its annual Houston’s Heroes Awards Luncheon on
Tuesday, May 4, 2021 from 11:30 AM-1 PM at the Royal Sonesta Houston
Hotel to honor outstanding individuals and organizations who have
given exemplary service to make Houston a safer place to live, work, learn
and play. Due to the public health threat from Covid-19 and the current
health and safety protocols, we will offer both an in-person event with
limited seating as well as virtual access for sponsors and supporters to
participate from home. While Crime Stoppers had to cancel this event
last Spring due to the pandemic, the organization is unable to do so this
year and reminds the community that it relies on this event for funding.
Eight distinguished awards will be awarded at this annual fundraiser that
raises funds to keep our communities safe.
For the second year, Crime Stoppers of Houston will reveal the winner
of the Dave Ward Media Excellence Award. This unique award will honor
an entity or individual who has exhibited media excellence and will be
selected by Houston’s Media Icon Dave Ward himself, along with support
from a small committee of his constituents at Crime Stoppers of Houston.
For 40 years, Crime Stoppers of Houston has focused on solving crime
through the famed Tip Line, 713-222-TIPS and reducing overall criminal
activity by preventing it through educational community programming.
The non-profit, which fundraises year-round will directly benefit from
the luncheon’s proceeds to help further advance the Crime Stoppers’
mission. Attending the 2021 Houston’s Heroes Awards Luncheon is one
easy way to support Crime Stoppers and public safety. The event is open
to participation by all. Individual tickets start at $175 and sponsorship
opportunities are available.

May Gardening Tips
Warm weather means our gardens and landscapes are
growing fast. Here are some tasks to keep your landscape
beautiful and productive:
Flowers: Time to plant summer blooming perennials and
annuals including plumbago, zinnias, angelonia, purslane,
lobularia, sunflowers, yellow bells, pride of Barbados,
duranta and bat-faced cuphea.
Vegetables: May is a great time to plant, from seed or nursery
plants, okra, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, winter squash,
pumpkins, basil, peppers, lima beans, eggplant, garlic
chives and Malabar greens. If you don’t want to dedicate an
area of your yard, consider planting here and there in your
flowerbeds. Edible landscaping is a popular new trend!
Lawns: Water 1/2 to 1” of irrigation per week. A rain gauge
or straight sided container (such as a tuna fish can) will help
you know how long to run your irrigation system to apply
1/2”.
Weeding: Hand pull or hoe weeds while they are still young
or better yet, maintain a 3” layer of mulch in all vegetable
and flowerbeds to deter weeds from getting a start.
Pruning: Remove spent blooms on spring and summer
annuals to promote new blooms.
Fertilizing: Fertilize flowerbeds and vegetable gardens w/
slow release organic fertilizer.
Water: Deep soakings between rain events is better than
frequent light sprinkling.
Birds: Spring migration continues until mid-May. Clean
bird feeders! Replace water in bird baths to avoid creating
mosquito breeding spots.
