their father’s feet while he
created art. Joe adds, “I often found the five little Kotzés in
Kobus’s studio, perfectly content to be part of his art-making”.
For Mariaan, the hours she spent in her father’s art studio
opened her mind to a world of paint, paintbrushes, and
being creative. Her earliest memories include “the smell of
paint, little floral arrangements made by my mother, which
brought little splashes of colour to every room of our house,
and books”.
The mother and daughter agree that there is something
very special about being part of a long line of artists. “We
understand and inspire one another, we speak the same
language and we connect without using words,” explains
Mariaan. Although Joe only started painting in 1997, at the
age of 50, she nurtured a love for art in her children. Mariaan
says it did however not take her mother long “to paint her
way open in the art world”. Joe’s mother, Fida du Plooy,
was a watercolourist, her aunt, Laurika Postma, was one of
the artists who worked on the frieze for the Voortrekker
Monument in Pretoria, and her sister, Hester Hattingh, is a
landscape artist.
While discussing her creative roots, Mariaan makes no secret
of how much she admires her parents. “It’s because of them
that I’m able to figure out this crazy, not so easy ride, which is
life. Their example taught me to be strong and to persevere.
They set the example for me of dedicated hard work.” Jo
adds with a wry smile that although her husband turns 83 in

mother, Joe Kotzé, talk about
living a life of creativity…
July, there is no stopping him.
In justifiably proud mom style, Joe also speaks
about her other children. “Hanlie started writing
poetry at school. She also loves using symbolism
in all her paintings.” Mariaan speaks of her “soul sister”,
whom she considers “the real artist in the family; she is
also a bird-lady, always surrounded by birds, like my dad,
feeding them and attracting them.” Her brother Jaco, the
only one in the family who is not a full-time artist, is an
electrical engineer, but he creates furniture and functional
art objects in his spare time. Mariaan’s other brother, Floris,
who started his career as a police officer, joined the family
business, starting Kotzé Art Gallery with his wife Anine to
market his father’s art. The art gallery in Dan Pienaar Drive
has since become the destination for those looking for
artworks to adorn their walls or for investment art created by
some of South Africa’s most sought after artists.
When one asks Mariaan what brought her back to
Bloemfontein after living in various towns across the country,
she says, “It just happened naturally. I was visiting my family
in Bloemfontein last year and it was suggested that I come
and live on our smallholding in Kwaggafontein. I moved
here last November and I’m so content. Until two years ago,
I didn’t really have time to focus on myself. It was a survival
game, as I’m a single mother to three daughters. But now
I’m in a new town, it’s a new year, and I believe there’s a new
story to be told.”
What is obvious from speaking to this artist mother and
daughter is that they not only share a dry sense of humour,
they also respect one another’s individuality. According
to Mariaan, “One thing about my mother… she doesn’t
interfere.” Joe responds, “That’s true. I might say something…
and then I let it be,” to which Mariaan replies, “My mother
is a beautiful example of quiet acceptance.” Jo ends off by
uttering that oft-repeated mom mantra, “Your dad and I
always prayed for you children… a lot!”

THE INCANDA STORY,
AS TOLD BY THE OWNER
Incanda had humble beginnings. I grew up on a farm near Swellendam in the
Southern Cape, and started the business directly after completing my studies,
selling ‘products’ from the farm. This included porcupine quills and guinea fowl
feather lampshades, as well as tanned Nguni cow skins.
Many people ask where the name Incanda comes from. Here
is the brief answer: Incanda means porcupine in isiXhosa. As
porcupine quill lampshades were my flagship products during
the first year of business, I decided on this name. It is correctly
pronounced by using the isiXhosa click sound.
From starting with quills and feathers, I gradually migrated into
the tanning and selling of all kinds of game skins (including
zebra and springbuck) as well as bovine (cow) leather. After the
second or third client enquired about who would be able to do
the actual upholstery, I replied, ‘Yes, we definitely can!’ With we,
I was referring to the wonderful people I was about to recruit
feverishly to help me with my new endeavour.
Today Incanda has six branches nationwide. We are now focused
on a much narrower, but crystal-clear, vision of becoming the
South African market leader in upmarket furniture.

CEASAR’S
WARM WINTER
SALAD
Serves 2 as a main | 4 as a side
Inspired by Salted Mint via Pinterest
Ingredients
1 head of broccoli cut into florets
1 head of cauliflower cut into florets
1 cup steamed baby spinach
1 cup cooked brown rice + lentils
6 tbsp lemon infused olive oil
2 tbsp za’atar
2 tbsp white balsamic vinegar
lemon zest from ¼ preserved lemon (skin only)
2 tsp honey
1 tsp chilli flakes
Garnish
1 avocado
2 tbsp pomegranate arils
2 tbsp toasted almonds
2 tbsp toasted pumpkin seeds
Danish feta
Microgreens
Method
Preheat oven to 200 degrees Celsius. Toss
cauliflower and broccoli florets in two
tablespoons of the lemon olive oil and the za’atar.
Season with salt and pepper and bake until the
florets start to char. Make the dressing by adding
the remaining four tablespoons of lemon olive
oil, white balsamic vinegar, lemon zest, honey
and chilli to a glass bottle. Season to taste. Screw
on the lid and shake vigorously to combine
ingredients. To a mixing bowl add the rice and
lentils, steamed spinach, preserved lemon skin,
one tablespoon each of the pomegranate
arils, toasted almonds, pumpkin seeds, and
the charred florets of broccoli and cauliflower.
Season to taste. To assemble the salad place
rice mixture in a serving bowl, top with the
sliced avocado and garnish with the remaining
ingredients. Serve warm with fresh lemon.

Jacques Cremore, the owner of goodburger fast food restaurants for the past nine years, ascribes the
success of the business to his wife, Klaradyn, their wonderful staff and, most importantly, their loyal
customers. Their belief, “when life throws you a burger … eat it”, is shared by fast-food lovers as the
go-to restaurant for the best burgers in Bloem.

The restaurant boasts the best burgers and freshly made chips
in town and stands on the promise that customers will always
receive the best quality the market can offer.
Jacques, the mastermind behind
the original recipes and sauces of
goodburger, shares that he always
knew he would want to be his own
boss. He was always involved in
making delicious food and opened
his first restaurant on 12 April 2012
in Quaggafontein, Bloemfontein.
At the time everything worked out
in Jacques’ favour as the BP service
station where they are currently
located in Quaggafontein did not
have a fast food restaurant. He had
his goodburger dream and decided
to take the risk. Thanks to Murdoch
Mackenzie, who took a chance
by leasing him the premises, the
dream soon became a reality.
“I always knew if we kept up the
quality of our food, our prices and
our service, our business would
stand out in the community.”
The burger-man adds with a smile
that he is still as excited about his business, which has since
grown into businesses, as the first day. When asked why he
decided on goodburger, he explains he was a sales rep before
starting his own restaurants. He eventually got tired of the
quality of food that he could buy on the roads and felt there was
a way that a person could sell good quality food at a better price
– that is where his dream was born. When he thought of owning
his own restaurant, the name goodburger stood out for him and
he decided to use it.
Jacques, his wife and staff have since grown the businesses’
footprint; in 2018 they opened the Langenhovenpark branch,
and in 2020 College Square. He went into partnership for the
fourth and first franchise shop in Dan Pienaar Drive, next to Puma
service station, in April 2021. According to Jacques, goodburger
is still growing and each outlet gains new loyal customers daily.
When asked what customers can expect
at his restaurants across the city, he
explains that almost everything at
goodburger is made by goodburger, so
you can expect the freshest ingredients
with a unique goodburger taste,
served with a friendly smile and made
with great love. This makes them
independent from any supplier and
keeps them at a level of their own. “Every
sauce, every recipe, is carefully thought
out; for me it was all about getting the
balance right and creating exclusive
goodburger recipes and sauces that
would keep customers coming back.”
Jacques is also his very own delivery
man as he delivers all the freshly made
sauces and ingredients to each shop.
This ensures that he keeps a firm hand
on all four of his successful restaurants.
It is important for him that customers are
treated courteously by friendly staff and
that fresh food, cooked the minute your
order is placed, is provided and made to
perfection. “Good food takes a little bit longer.”

Living some 15 kilometres out of Bloemfontein, the Herholdt

the Jaguar I-Pace is an all-electric car that can be fully charged
in just a few hours in the comfort of their home or even at their
workplace. The I-Pace’s 90 kWh battery is made up of highenergy
density lithium-ion pouch cells. Its design and state-ofthe-art
thermal management system support longevity and
periods of sustained maximum power.
“For a day-to-day driver and a commute car, it is the best thing
you could have. My wife treats the vehicle like she treats a cell
phone. When she gets home, she plugs the car in the charger.
You get a wall charger, which fits into the wall of your garage and
this charger will automatically shut off when it is fully charged, so
it does not constantly consume power,” said Heine.
According to Heine, when it comes to power and torque, the
I-Pace does not lack in that department. His first experience was
nothing but pure bliss. “When I got into this car for the first time,
the feel that I was sitting inside a luxury vehicle was instant. You
could immediately feel that it is a quality car you’re sitting in.
When we started driving, the road handling and driving were
very soft. The thing that blew me away was when I put my foot
down and experienced the instant power that came through.”
The I-Pace is propelled by two permanent magnet synchronous
electric motors. Similar to the technology found in the I Type
Formula E racing car, these motors generate 294 kW and 696 Nm
of torque. The instant torque and All Wheel Drive traction give
the I-Pace the acceleration of a sports car, reaching 100km/h in
4.8 seconds.
Not only is the I-Pace pleasing to the eye from the outside, but
the inside seamlessly integrates technology and abundant space.
The interior design is clean and uncluttered, with tactile features
and sweeping lines. The nature of the electric powertrain offers
additional space, providing more freedom to maximise the
comfort provided by its interior.
The I-Pace includes a number of state-of-the-art features, such
as the new one-touch infotainment system, Pivi Pro, which
delivers all key infotainment at a glance. It is as intuitive as your
smartphone.
When asked if he would encourage others to contribute to the
environment by choosing an electric car, Heine’s answer was
simple, “Go book a test drive,” adding with a big smile, “Words
cannot explain how amazing the new Jaguar I-Pace is. It is a
