If you drive past the Junior Auxiliary house on Main Streetin Madison you’ll notice a little library out front. They currentlyhave three little free libraries around town and will soon be addingmore. Anyone can leave a book, or take a book, all free of charge.Also added to the JA house this year was a mailbox for “Letters toSanta.” Children of all ages wrote letters to Santa and his elvespicked up these letters and made sure Santa answered each one.48 • MARCH 2021
MAKING ADIFFERENCEThe Junior Auxiliary of Madison County was chartered bya group of caring, enthusiastic women in 1986 and continuesto grow and thrive throughout Madison County. Volunteerswork tirelessly throughout the year on a variety of projectsthat focus on local children and families in need of assistance.“Covid-19 challenged us to seek newopportunities and brought significantchanges to the way we serve in ourcommunity,” says Chapter President,Amy Cummins. “This has been a verychallenging year to find ways to safelyand efficiently serve our community.As a chapter full of talented women,we have been able to revamp projectsand find new ways to serve during thispandemic.”One thing they knew they wanted todo was spread cheer to the teachers asthey went back to school to face allthe unknowns and challenges of virtuallearning and social distancing in theclassroom. This is how the project“Chalk the Walkway” was born. Chaptermembers were scattered all over MadisonCounty at various schools and chalkedencouraging words on the sidewalksto greet the teachers as they returned.The word soon grew and other schooladministrators were asking us to comechalk their walkways. Who knew a littlechalk and creativity could go such a longway in brightening someone’s day?Hometown MADISON • 49
