DESIGN INSPIRATION
Asia Pacific’s leading luxury hotel group, Shangri-La
Hotels and Resorts, opened its first property in the
United Kingdom on 6 May 2014. London’s first elevated
luxury hotel occupies levels 34 to 52 of the
iconic Renzo Piano designed building, The Shard.
The five-star property offers 202 rooms and suites,
all with unparalleled views, three signature dining
and drinks venues, three river-facing event rooms
as well as an infinity pool and a 24-hour gym on level
52. In the main areas of the hotel, the designers
have adopted a contemporary approach to present
the sumptuous Oriental motifs, such a fundamental
part of the Shangri-La Hotel brand DNA. Colours,
textures and materials are used to harmonise the
interiors with the cityscape view at each turn.
Entrance Lobby
Upon arrival at the ground floor entrance lobby on
St Thomas Street, guests are greeted by four soaring
feature artworks next to the welcome concierge
desk. A strip of interlock-box-shaped crystal chandelier
illuminates the whole area, adding a sense
of modernity. Along with the lighting and layering
effects, the shimmering gold-shaded artworks, featuring
Chinese ink painting, exhibit the traditional
Chinese poise in an innovative and artistic manner.
The simple yet stylish furniture accompanies a pastel
yellow floral-patterned carpet evoking a warm
and cosy atmosphere.
Reception Lobby
Echoing with poetic ambiance, the sky lobby on
level 35 combines the design elements of both East
and West in a seamless fusion. Stepping out of the
lift’s, guests are welcomed by grey marble floors
reflecting unrivalled views of iconic London landmarks
from floor-to-ceiling windows. Together
with the cosy furniture and sculptures in the welcome
area, the lobby presents a harmony of art and
exceptional views. Guests can further enjoy the invigorating
sights of River Thames through the double-height
glass windows as they stroll down the
stairs of the Grand Staircase to the private event
space on level 34.

THE WORLD’S FIRST BITCOIN WATCH

Franck Muller, pioneer luxury watchmaker, renowned
for creating exclusive timepieces characterized by complicated
movements and original designs, announces
the launch of the Encrypto, the world’s first functional
Bitcoin watch.
The Encrypto watch was designed by Franck
Muller with the Bitcoin universe in mind. The
dial itself was tastefully designed using the QR
code of Satoshi’s Genesis Block address.
A custom designed B within an emblem of circuitry,
while the laser etched public wallet address elegantly
sits as a QR code in its polished frame. Customers
can customize both the dial and the band of the watch.
Some models even include precious metals and diamonds
in the dial and frame.
Each timepiece comes as a two piece “Deep Cold Storage”
set, with its own unique public address etched on
the dial and a sealed USB containing the private key.
Users can add their Bitcoin to their wallet or check
their balance directly through the dial.
The watch’s QR code and cold storage system were
designed in partnership with Regal Assets, a renowned
crypto investment company with offices in the US,
Canada, the UK and the UAE. Regal Assets made headlines
in 2017 by being the first company to receive a
government-issued license to trade cryptos in its deep
cold storage vault, as covered by Bloomberg.
The regional director of Franck Muller, Erol Baliyan,
said: “We always aim to impact the customer at an
emotional level and create a bond between the customer
and the timepiece. As a brand, we are a trend
maker with a solid track record and are not shy when
it comes to adopting innovation. Bitcoin is the millennial
gold is the perfect marriage between innovation
and personal choice.”

Dubai Mall store. We accept payment by credit card,
bank transfer and also in Bitcoin. Buyers can also purchase
the watch from our partner Regal Assets,” added
Mr Baliyan.
The watch’s cold storage wallet uses offline generated,
non-deterministic TRNGs (True Random Numbers
Generated) that cannot be hacked. The method
for storing Bitcoin is quite popular among hodlers and
early adopters due to its increased security and peace
of mind. Rather than rely on slips of paper, users can
scan the QR code on their watch to check their balance
and deposit BTC in their personal safe, or their
fully insured deep cold storage vault if they are buying
BTC from Regal Assets.

and is the perfect marriage between crypto

Rimac showcases its C_Two electric hypercar and the technology under its skin
With the testing program that started at the beginning
of the year, the Rimac team continues with hard
work on the development of the C_Two, as they introduce
new technologies, and undergo hundreds of
tests and procedures, making sure that all initial targets
and global homologation requirements are met
and exceeded. Launched last year, the Rimac C_Two is
the world’s most powerful electric hypercar, demonstrating
the company’s expertise in high-performance
vehicle systems. Powered by a four-motor powertrain
system with 1.914 hopsepower and instantly available
2300 Nm of torque, the C_Two accelerates 0-60 mph
in 1.85 seconds, and reaches 300 kph in 11.8 seconds.
The 120 kWh battery capacity enables 550 km of range
in WLTP cycle (650 km NEDC). These figures have taken
the world by surprise, but with Rimac’s new development
efforts, the C_Two can, and will, see upgrades.
With prototypes in production, the C_Two will soon
take its final shape, and in 2020 bring its performance
to the streets around the world showing just how far
(and fast!) the technology of the all-electric future can
go.
The C_Two displayed throughout Geneva Motor Show
2019 is finished in Galactic White with deep blue tinted
carbon-fibre elements. The interior is handcrafted
in-house, with matte carbon fibre complimenting petroleum
blue leather and contrast stitching. This specification
speaks for the elegant, yet electrifying profile
of the C_Two.
When all the dramatic and aerodynamically efficient
design is out of the way, what remains beneath the skin
is equally impressive: the carbon-fibre monocoque
and the powertrain it holds. Designed and engineered
from scratch by Rimac’s in-house team, the C_Two’s
full carbon fibre monocoque is the biggest single carbon-piece
in the industry – with the full battery and
powertrain integrated within the moncoque. Together
with the roof, it weights under 200 kg. The architecture
of the monocoque features a bonded carbon
roof, structural reinforcements and crumple-zones
for front, rear and side-impact, as well as front and
rear aluminium crash structures. The 120 kWh battery
pack is an integrated, structural element, contributing
to the impressive torsional stiffness of 8.000 kgm/
deg. Double wishbone suspension with electronically-controlled
dampers provides a smooth and comfortable
ride, with four electric motors powering each
individual wheel giving both four-wheel drive and
unprecedented levels of dynamic control. The monocoque
is the first of its kind to be made in one piece
and integrating the battery as a structural part, with
front and rear suspension being attached to the same
carbon structure (no sub-frames). To achieve this, a
highly complex structure and material mix with 2.200
plys, 222 aluminum inserts and multi-curing process
were necessary. The highly complex design and development
deliver a result that is light and exceptionally
strong.
Designing, engineering and producing key electrification
systems for the high-performance vehicles remains
the mission of Rimac. Doubling in size over the
course of 2018, this no-longer automotive startup is
now supplying their battery and drivetrain systems,
hardware, and software to many partners in the automotive
industry, powering the most extreme performing
EV and HEV hypercars on the market. The goal is
to ever deliver innovative technology to the high-performance
market, starting with the crown jewel – the
Rimac C_Two.

Around 90% of Ashford Castle’s guests are American,
with the rest from Ireland. So what are Brits and
other guests missing out on?
Status
Ireland’s West Coast is home to Ashford Castle, the
800-year-old former home to the Guinness Family
that’s now an incredible 5* hotel.
After undergoing a two year, $75mrefurbishmentit reopened
its doors in April 2015 and went on to be voted
‘Best Hotel in the World’ the following year.Yet despite
this incredible feat, Brits still choose to holiday closer
to home, even though Knock airport is only an hour

Ashford Castle also has its own 32-seater cinema,

The George V Dining Room is a very classy restaurant
that serves high quality Irish dishes made with the finest
ingredients and produce. It was named in honour
of theroyal who visited in 1905, as was The Prince of
Wales Bar, which offers the perfect spot for a nightcap
post-meal.

The Dungeon downstairs, meanwhile, offers a unique
setting with a bistro-inspired menu, while the latest
addition to the family – Stanley’s (named after the current
owner, Stanley Tollman) – is an informal American-style
diner. Mrs Tea’s Boutique and Bakery (named
after Stanley’s wife, Beatrice Tollman – co-owners of
the Red Carnation Hotel Group) sells homemade fudge,
delicious sandwiches and Mrs T’s legendary ‘Bread in
a Bottle’.

Stuttgart. Since 1979 the
G-Class has thrilled its fans
with its outstanding driving
characteristics and impressive offroad
capabilities. Even 40 years
later, this iconic off-roader from
Mercedes-Benz can do more than
other vehicles. The G-Class has
now demonstrated this yet again,
with a stunt never before performed.
On the 101-metre high wall
of the Punta Negra dam in Argentina,
the new G 350 d (combined fuel
consumption:
9.8 - 9.6 l/100 km; combined CO2
emissions: 259 - 252 g/km)[1]
shows how it defies gravity. How
the 2,451 kg G-Class moves along
the dam wall can be seen on You-
Tube from March 2, 2019.

while retaining its character
and unmistakable key attributes.
Its DNA is stronger than trends, defying
both the passage of time and
even gravity. We have dramatically
demonstrated this with the drive,
where the G-Class moves along

Thursday 30th May saw The Luxury Network members
escape to the amiable micro-climate of Tantalus
Estate, on Waiheke Island, for a glorious
Harvest Lunch, VIP transfers courtesy of Heletranz Helicopters.
Tantalus Estate dotes proud, rich history and elegance
and claims its place amongst New Zealand’s premium
vineyards and restaurants. With the city of sails providing
a serene day for flying from the Heletranz Heliport
– guests began the day with a glass of champagne before
boarding.
On departure back to Heletranz Heliport, The Luxury
Network guests left with Tantalus Estate olive oil, and
honey – showcasing one part of the delicious produce
offering of the renowned destination venue. The treats
continued as guests received a gift from Jo Malone London
on arrival back at the heliport to treasure at home.
Tantalus Estate chef Tino Passano, showcased the new
Autumn-Winter Harvest menu; paired with pleasing
wine matches that highlighted infused flavours from
local produce. The menu showcased the diverse and
plentiful bounty of ingredients unique to New Zealand.
Seasonally sourced; guests indulged in Te Matuku Bay
shucked Oysters, followed by an entrée, main, and dessert.
Ora King Salmon, twice cooked Pork Belly, Hawkes
Bay Lamb neck, and Longline Market Fish solidified as
guest favourites, with each dish presenting a decadent
flavour and taste profile.
The light-filled venue fabricated from natural materials
and set amongst the vines saw guests perched amid the
hand-painted tile walls, and intricate chandeliers crafted
from old vines, creating a nod to a bygone era.

force”. Zenith reinterprets the fusee
& chain constant force mechanism
in a modernistic style in the new
DEFY Fusee Tourbillon. Housing
the new El Primero 4805 SK calibre,
a manual-winding movement that
follows the DEFY code of avant-garde
movement architecture with an
open three-dimensional impact,
the DEFY Fusee Tourbillon is available
in two distinct editions in Carbon
and Platinum.
A New Vision of Haute Horlogerie
Upon a first glance, it’s immediately
clear that the DEFY Fusee Tourbillon’s
calibre is out of the ordinary.
The spoke design of the bridges
is amplified by their bicolor finish,
where the top satin-finished
surface is given a black treatment,
while its polished sides are a lighter
grey rhodium tone. The layout
of the bridges offers a balanced
layout of the various functions and
complications. On the top half of
the movement, one can admire the
uniquely conceived fusee and chain
constant force mechanism. The

chain, which consists of 575 individually
hand-assembled components,
features a bold blued treatment:
a first for a wristwatch fusee
and chain system. On the opposite
end at 6 o’clock, a tourbillon cage
with an entirely new construction
featuring an off-centered balance
wheel makes a full rotation every
60 seconds. Like the chain, the
tourbillon cage is embellished with
a striking blue colour, reinforcing
the visual effect of the DEFY
Fusee Tourbillon’s unique moving
parts. Positioned at the edge of
the dial between 4 and 5 o’clock, a
red-tipped hand indicates the power
reserve, a handy feature when
manually winding the DEFY Fusee
Tourbillon with its 50-hour power
reserve.
One extraordinary movement –
two entirely different executions
As a mechanical movement’s mainspring
unwinds, the torque it delivers
to the regulating organ drops,
resulting in less efficient chronometric
performance of the movement.
A centuries-old solution to
counter this and achieve constant
force lies within the power source
and its transmission. Known as
the “fusee and chain” system, it
features miniature chain is coiled
around a conical “fusee” and attached
to the mainspring barrel. As
the mainspring unwinds, more of
the chain wraps around the barrel,
detaching itself from the wide conical
base of the fusee. The greater
turning movement provided by the
fusee compensates the weakening
mainspring pull, thus maintaining
the torque and, consequently, the
amplitude of the regulating organ
constant throughout the duration
of the mainspring’s autonomy.
By combining the fusee and chain
mechanism with a tourbillon regulating
organ, Zenith places precision
at the forefront of its unique
take on haute horlogerie. Highlighting
the unique technical and
aesthetic prowess of the piece, the
DEFY Fusee Tourbillon is produced
in two different editions.
The first version features a light
yet robust carbon case, crown and
buckle head. The carbon fibre treatment
even extends to the open dial,
with the central skeletal element
and surrounding flange ring giving
off the unique shimmer of this material.
To complete the high-tech
look, the DEFY Fusee Tourbillon in
carbon is fitted on a black rubber
strap with a “Cordura” fabric effect
and blue stitching. A second strap is
also supplied, in black rubber with a
woven carbon effect. The DEFY Fusee
Tourbillon in carbon is limited
to 50 pieces.
The second version of the DEFY
Fusee Tourbillon, limited to just 10
pieces, is crafted in platinum. The
exposed movement provides a vibrant,
voluminous view, where the
mix of materials and tones add visual
depth, from the anthracite base
plate of the movement to the blued
chain and tourbillon cage topped
with a set of geometrical bridges in
two tones. The strap is made of a
black rubber core coated with black
alligator leather.
While each version will appeal to a
different kind of forward-thinking
watch aficionado, one thing is certain:
the DEFY Fusee Tourbillon solidifies

Day 2
Transfer via private air charter to
Care For Wild Rhino Sanctuary for
a once-in-a-lifetime rhino experience.
After lunch guests fly back to
Umganu Lodge for an afternoon
Game Drive in the Kruger National
Park followed by dinner.
Day 3
Guests will enjoy a game drive
through the Kruger National Park
on route to the privately owned
Leopard Creek Country Club near
Malelane.
Play golf at Leopard Creek C.C. followed
by refreshments on the clubhouse
patio and then a game drive
back to Umganu Lodge for dinner.
Day 4
After an early breakfast guests will
be road transferred to Skukuza Airport
for a private charter flight to the
Klaserie or Timbivati Private Nature
Reserve. The flight is approximately

rhino immobilisation followed by
a safari lunch in the ”bush” before a
private charter flight back to Skukuza
Airport and then Umganu Lodge

As the sun set over the Palm Jumeirah on the 1st
of May, XXII Carat hosted the inauguration of its
finished development inside one of the newly
completed luxury villas. Upon arrival to the two-story
home where the launch was being held, guests were
greeted by the sight of three gleaming Rolls-Royce
Black Badges, perfectly situated in the immaculately
groomed avenue of the villa complex.
Inside the beautifully decorated house, the attendees
marveled at the high ceilings, sumptuous chandeliers,
and gleaming marble floors of the residence, while also
enjoying chilled beverages and a delectable spread of
hors d’oeuvres from Galeries Lafayette.
Throughout the evening, guests were also treated to
showcases by several The Luxury Network members,

including a full display of luxurious suits and accessories
from Ascots and Chapels; a delightful caviar tasting
by Gourmet House Caviar; and an impressive array
of jewelry from Seba Jamal, which included bespoke
pieces featuring the Rolls Royce logo.
The invitees also enjoyed tours of the villa, which features
several inviting bedrooms and a master bathroom
fit for royalty. However, guests spent just as
much time outside the house, enjoying views of the
twilight over the sea as they lounged by the swimming
pool or strolled across the perfectly manicured lawn.
It was an evening enjoyed by all, and we know that the
future residents of the ultra-luxury complex will enjoy
every moment they spend in their home!
