The fight for women’s rights is today a global one, 46 years 

after the first proclamation of International Women’s Day 

made by the United Nations on 8 March 1975. Whether 

it be economic, political or social arenas, this fight for 

equality persists in every region of the world. 

Women healthcare workers have been on the forefront of 

this battle against this virus. On the home front, wives and 

mothers have adapted quickly to the new paradigm of 

working from home. Some find themselves juggling their 

children’s online classes as well as taking care of meals 

and other household chores. 

This issue, we at Tropicana celebrate International 

Women’s Day with their stories, from our cover story 

on Edith Ho, hailing from Denmark, exhibiting her 

home turned art gallery in the tropical surrounds of the 

Tropicana Golf and Country Resort with her husband, to a 

homegrown cooking and baking talent and social media 

influencer, Samantha Lee. 

In our fashion spread, we feature the creations of five 

leading Malaysian women designers who balance 

motherhood and business, craving their own niche in 

the heady, competitive world of fashion. Photographed 

at the Tropicana’s Experiential Hall in the new Tropicana 

Garden’s Office Tower, this issue’s model, Rekha Kumar 

does their clothes justice.

Fasting during the holy month of Ramadan is an 

act of atonement and repentance as well as an 

expression of appreciation for what the All Mighty 

Allah has bestowed.

holy month of Ramadan to help the needy.

Lighting of oil Lamps known as 'pelita' is a symbolic 

gesture to call on angels as well as to bring light and 

blessings into people’s homes. 

Wearing colour co-ordinated traditional outfits 

during Hari Raya is a way of showing familial love 

and bonding with one another. Men usually wear a 

songkok and samping while women dress in baju 

kebaya or kurung. 

What would Raya be without Duit Raya? Youngsters 

look forward to visiting relatives and friends to collect 

this gift of money which is offered by older people 

after the youngsters seek forgiveness from them.

As part of the festivities, delicious dishes 

food such as ketupat and lemang are served 

as traditional Hari Raya staples, eaten with 

delicious curry and rending or dipped in satay 

sauce. 

When Chinese New Year and Hari Raya Aidilfitri 

fell on the same week from 1996 to 1998, the 

merger of the two major festivities resulted in 

‘Kongsi Raya’ the amalgam of two words to 

recognise two celebrations. 

A visit to the mosque is the first thing Muslims 

do on Hari Raya to pray for forgiveness and 

offer special Eid prayers to commemorate the 

end of the Holy month. This is followed by a visit 

to the grave of their dearly departed to pay their 

respects followed by visiting family and friends.

Today more than ever, the fight for gender equality 

has reached a precipitous point whereby women who 

contribute so much to the world economy as well as in 

the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, have chosen 

to challenge outdated practices and existing biases 

against them. It started in the USA back in 1909, when 

the Socialist Party of America took to the streets to 

acknowledge and honour garment workers who had 

protested against inhumane working conditions in 

the previous year. Over the years more countries in 

Europe celebrated this special day dedicated to women 

by attending rallies which focused on issues such as 

suffrage, representation, education and worker’s rights. 

It was only in in 1975 when the United Nations declared 

March 8 as an official holiday did International Women’s 

day get the international recognition it deserves. 

As the first woman as well as the first African American 

and the first South Asian American to become the Vice 

President of the USA, Kamala Harris put it succinctly 

when she said, “If we do not lift up women and families, 

everyone will fall short.” Closer to home, eight-time 

world squash champion Nicole David is an undeniable 

role model for many Malaysians, especially young 

girls who look up to her, especially having recently 

been named as the Greatest Athlete of All Time by the 

International World Games Association.

Tropicana Golf & Country Resort (“TGCR”), a subsidiary of Tropicana 

Corporation Berhad prepared and delivered over 6,500 fresh, 

hot meals by the truckload to 28 needy homes – orphanages, 

old folk’s and special needs – over the 34-day MCO period from 

16 January to 18 February 2021. The event was put together by 

Tropicana Foundation, a charity arm of the Tropicana Group in its 

aim to raise spirits, spread festive cheers and provide relief to the 

underprivileged communities during this MCO period. The Tropicana 

Group also united its 50 divisions to raise funds and purchased 

dry canned food, sanitary products, essential supplies and other 

necessities for these underprivileged homes.

Tropicana Corporation Berhad’s Group Managing 

Director, Dion Tan spoke about joining the efforts of 

its subsidiary to come together in times of need to 

help those who are living at the margins of society. 

“This MCO 2.0 will have more a dire effect on 

everyone, especially the underprivileged community, 

so it is important to unite and support them. As a 

community builder, it is our mission to redefine the 

art of living as well as the art of caring. Therefore, 

during the MCO 2.0 period, our Tropicana Foundation 

committee members worked closely with our TGCR 

chefs to plan, prepare and pack fresh, hot lunch and 

dinner every day. Our packed meals were delivered to 

28 underprivileged homes, from orphanages, special 

needs to old folk’s homes” he said. 

Meanwhile, at Tropicana Corporation Berhad’s 

Headquarters, an internal fundraising drive was 

initiated to raise donations from employees across 50 

divisions, who wanted to contribute. Cash donations 

were collected to purchase food and supplies for 

the 28 charity homes. Staff was also encouraged 

to donate dry foods in a charity food drive, where 

canned goods, rice and other types of dry goods were 

collected for distribution to the charities. This charity 

drive was organised by the Tropicana Foundation, 

the Group’s recently reactivated CSR initiative that 

overviews all the Group’s charitable internal and 

external CSR initiatives.

frontline staff with hand sanitisers, customised Tropicana reusable 

fabric face masks and personal stainless steel cutlery sets. The care 

pack also doubled as a festive set that included special ang pow 

packets in preparation for the Chinese New Year celebrations. This 

year will see continued precautions and care taken by Tropicana to 

curb the spread of the virus.

HELPING THE 

FLOOD-STRICKEN 

Floods hit many parts of Malaysia in the early months of 2021. At 

the height of the monsoon season, thousands of people in various 

states were affected. Tropicana reacted swiftly by sending its senior 

management team to purchase and send necessities such as rice, 

noodles, mineral water, sanitary items and canned foods to provide 

immediate relief to flood victims.

sales so that the collected funds can be used to help make the lives 

of the underprivileged more joyful and comfortable during such 

challenging times.” Din elaborated.

HOME 

IS WHERE HER ART IS 

Edith Ho’s sprawling three-storey home in Tropicana 

Golf and Country Resort is testament that work, play 

and passion can all coexist harmoniously under one roof. 

As an import from Denmark, via Macau, Edith arrived 

in Malaysia with her husband and three children on a 

Malaysia My Second Home Visa back in 2007. 

She initially lived in a penthouse apartment but her 

desire for something furry and friendly got the better of 

her. She explains: “Our penthouse was lovely but my kids 

and I wanted to have a dog. The condominium we were 

living in didn’t allow you to have a pet so my husband 

and I decided to move into a house.” 

Edith and her husband, Edwin Ho then began an arduous 

search for the right home to buy in Tropicana but after 

looking at over 20 houses, they still didn’t find anything 

suitable. “We realised that the only way to get a home of 

our liking was to build one of our own.” 

Luckily for them, they chanced upon an empty piece of 

land bordering the Tropicana Golf course. According to 

Edith, there were only two empty plots of land available 

and the one they chose was triangular in shape. “I was 

very anxious during the process of building this house,” 

Edith confesses, adding that she was also pregnant with 

her youngest son then.

Just then Pasha, her affectionate black Labrador sidles 

up to her, nudging her for a cuddle. Edith’s main reason 

for moving into a home has obviously been validated. So 

how did she end up living in this stunning 10,000 square 

feet modernist designed home? “My daughter went to a 

birthday party of her friend who lived in Tropicana one 

day,” she recalls, adding that she never stepped foot this 

this part of town before. 

Having a “good connection” with their architect helped 

greatly and Edith and her family managed to move in 

just two and a half years after buying the land. 

Today, Edith ‘s home has become not just her sanctuary 

but also the place where her passion takes residence.

“As a gallerist, I believe the space where you exhibit your 

art is vitally important,” Edith says, her eyes lighting up. 

“Having my gallery in a home setting allows my customers 

to imagine how the art would look like in their own home,” 

she says. Glancing at a series of circular paintings hung 

high on her living room walls she talks about an upcoming 

exhibition she’s collaborating with W Hotel Kuala Lumpur. 

“We are planning on holding an exhibition at the W 

Hotel Kuala Lumpur in March, subject to any MCO 

regulations” she says excitedly. “It’s called ‘Crazy Asians’ 

and it is created by our Gung Ho collective.” The Gung 

Ho Collective she is talking about is an art initiative 

she formed in 2019 with British pop artist Jonny Xerox 

and contemporary Malaysian artist Lim Kok Hong. This 

follows on from the previous collaboration with W Kuala 

Lumpur called ‘Pop Orient’ which now forms part of the 

permanent collection at Yen restaurant at the W Kuala 

Lumpur. 

Ensconced on her comfy white sofa, surrounded by 

colourful paintings and masterful sculpture and looking 

out through her sliding doors to the luscious golf course 

beyond, Edith drifts into a reverie, contentment radiating 

from her every pore. She snaps back to the present 

moment but only to reveal her current sentiment. “I feel 

very lucky to have found Tropicana and building our 

dream home here…the security and facilities, especially 

at the Club House is just amazing. I can’t imagine myself 

living in a better place.” While the idea of paradise on 

earth might be a remote concept for some, for Edith and 

her family, it has become a reality.

SJIIM STUDENTS 

School days are filled with lots of learning experiences, not just in the classroom but in all the other activities that 

students participate in. With the MCO 2.0 in effect we asked students at St Joseph’s Institution International School 

about their daily routines. With lessons being taught online, they had more time for activities at home. We asked 

Scarlet what her life at home during the MCO is like. 

1. How does your daily schedule look like during the MCO period? 

Virtual school lessons were conducted systematically and were not very different from face-to-face lessons, 

so my overall routine was similar to what it looked like before the MCO period. One difference was that I could 

prepare and revise for lessons using the time I would have used to walk to school.

2. How do you like your study experience at SJIIM? 

The compassionate surrounding environment and the unique experiences that SJIIM 

offered made me feel much more confident about my learning and engaging in new 

challenges. I am grateful to be part of the SJIIM community, and I wish to contribute even 

more to it. 

3. Do you miss school, and why? 

I miss school and its vibrant atmosphere. Although the virtual school experience has 

been amazing, I feel more a part of the school community if I met people face-to-face 

and studied in classrooms with my peers. I also miss what we could do when we were 

physically present in school, such as conducting science experiments in lab and spending 

break time and lunchtime together with friends. I hope that MCO gets lifted as soon as 

possible and allows us to return to school.

SCAMMED! 

Here is some simple actionable advice that you can put into practise right 

away to safeguard yourself from becoming another scam statistic. 

In this age of mobile phones and the Internet, we seem 

to be bombarded by spam calls, and our privacy is being 

infringed upon more and more each day.

You’ve probably received tonnes of WhatsApp or text 

messages luring you into online gambling, and a bunch 

of phishing emails that is clogging up your account. 

Technology is changing so rapidly and sadly this has 

empowered criminals to find new ways to tempt, cheat 

and steal. 

The Macau Scam for example, which starts with a phone 

call from someone pretending to be an officer from 

a bank or a debt collector, has been the No.1 scam in 

Malaysia for the last couple of years. 

You may think that only senior citizens get duped this 

way, but the truth is scammers are preying on everyone. 

Even a manager of a banking agency lost more than 

RM1.97mil when tricked by a such a syndicate last May! 

Why do people still fall for these tricks? Scams usually 

succeed because they sound like the real thing. 

Scammers create believable stories that convince you to 

give them your money or personal details. 

But a key thing to remember is that scams will not work 

without your participation! The best way to safeguard 

yourself from falling prey is to start educating yourself. 

Here are some tips to get started: 

Be alert! Scams are rampant, so keep up to date with 

the news on how scammers are operating. Always be 

on your guard when you’re dealing with someone you 

do not know, whether it’s over the phone, by email, on a 

social network or in person. 

If you do get scammed, be sure to lodge a report 

with the police as well as the relevant agency (eg for 

cybersecurity issues, you can go to www.cybersecurity. 

my or call 1-300-88-2999; if it’s a matter related to 

Bank Negara, you can call 1300-88-5465 or email 

bnmtelelink@bnm.gov.my). Remember as many details as 

you can, including dates and times that calls or messages 

were received, and details of the key persons that you 

dealt with. To file a police report, you can contact the 

Commercial Crime Investigation Department Bukit Aman 

Police Station (rmp@rmp.gov.my) or go to the nearest 

police station.

GOOGLE IT 

Check to see that who you’re dealing with is 

a legitimate entity. Be cautious of companies 

that only use yahoo or Gmail etc. as email 

addresses. Never click on suspicious texts, popup 

windows or attachments in emails if they 

come from a strange source. 

NEVER SHARE PERSONAL DETAILS 

Keep passwords and PIN numbers in a safe place. Try memorising 

them and use phrases that are not common or easy to guess. Change 

your passwords frequently. Be very careful about how much personal 

information you share on social media sites; for example, children’s and 

parent’s names, or what school you studied at. Scammers can use this 

information to create a fake identity or to target you with a scam.

CALL BACK 

If you receive a call from a bank, police station, phone 

company or tax department, say you’ll call back. 

Companies that only disclose a cell phone number (or an 

overseas number) are often associated with fraud. Look 

up the contact yourself and call to check if the call was 

bona fide. If the person on the line tries to dissuade you 

from doing this, chances are it’s a scam! 

GET AN APP 

There are various apps that can help you 

identify potential fraudsters, such as Truecaller, a 

smartphone application that has features of calleridentification 

and call-blocking. Choose a credible 

antivirus for your computer too, one that has basic 

security solutions but is also capable of protecting 

against hacker attacks and fraud.

Feed the Eagles 

Langkawi is named after the ubiquitous 

‘helang’ or white bellied fish eagles 

that colonised the island long before 

we did. And you won’t get a better 

view of them than on a boat ride 

around the island where tour guides

magnificent views of the birds of prey. 

The Underwater World 

Sea life abounds at the Underwater 

World Aquarium where over 500 

species of marine animals such as 

harbour seals and sharks live. Walk 

along the sea bed while giant manta 

rays glide overhead, or watch the 

antics of rock hopper penguins and be 

amazed at the diverse forms life takes 

under water.


Hike Mount Raya 

Legends tell of a giant that once 

lived here and when he fell, his body 

became the mountain range known 

as Mount Raya. Standing 881 meters 

above sea level, it is the highest point 

on Langkawi and is a natural habitat 

of various eagles and other flora and 

fauna found in abundance here. 

The Seven Wells 

Telaga Tujuh or the Seven Wells is 

a natural waterfall formation that is 

said to be inhabited by faeries and 

other mystical creatures. The seven 

connected pools are fed by seven 

waterfalls, and as you climb to the top 

of the hill, you’ll spot hornbills and 

macaques living naturally in the wild.

Tropicana Golf & Country Resort is known for its rolling hills and 

tree-lined fairways. Golfers flock to these idyllic meadows with the 

short, fine grass, and hunt for birdies, eagles and the rarest of them 

all, the mythical hole-in-one. But golf isn’t the only thing on some 

people’s minds; some watch the greens and the roughs, spying for 

actual avians, spotted in abundance here. Today, we explore a few 

of our flying, feathered friends found frolicking freely at the TGCR. 

The white throated kingfisher (Halcyon smyrnensis) 

Sporting a bright blue streak on its brown and red coat with a 

white throat and breast, it is a beautiful visitor to the greens, 

flashing its bright red beak and darting across the foliage. However, 

beautiful as it is, this bird is a prolific hunter, preying on small fish, 

lizards, rodents and even other birds. You’ll occasionally spot it 

diving into the water hazards to poach some fish from our ponds!

white throats during the mating ritual, and flick out their wings for 

a couple of seconds, revealing the white markings inside.

Kingfisher couples make their nests underground in burrows, laying 

anywhere from 4-7 white eggs, with their chicks hatching after 20 

days, and ready to fly 19 days later, so these birds are quick to 

fledge and get into action. 

The call of this kingfisher is a chuckling “chake-ake-ake-ake-ake”. 

They are particularly noisy in the breeding season. Not considered 

endangered, they are commonly found on the plains throughout 

Asia and as high up as the Himalayas.


A muster of storks 

congregates 

together in a colony. 

Asian Openbill Stork (Anastomus oscitans) 

This small stork species stands around 68cm tall 

and has a curved upper beak structure with a small 

gap in between the mandibles presumably to better 

grip the snails and shellfish it eats, thus giving it the 

name Openbill Stork. It’s mainly whitish grey with 

black feathers under its mantle and young storks are 

brownish grey.

They’re usually found in wetlands and marshes where 

they hunt for snails and molluscs, cracking the shells 

with their specialised beaks. Occasionally they will 

also eat small snakes, frogs, insects, and anything 

else they can catch while wading through the water. 

Breeding season for these storks is typically after 

the rainy season, varying by location, and will form 

colonies ranging in size from 5-150 nests! They build 

stick nests in trees and both parents will take turns 

incubating the eggs.Laying an average of 4 eggs that 

hatch in about 25 days, these storks are a common 

sight on the treelines and by the lakes. The storks are 

mostly silent, but may produce a “honk” sounding call.

Purple Heron (Ardea purpurea) 

A slender, stalking bird, the Purple Heron has grey and 

brown plumage with a striking silhouette and a dark 

stripe streaking down its neck. Standing still, it is often 

seen hunting for snakes, fish, rodents, amphibians and 

other small critters. The bird typically ambushes its 

prey or chases it down over short distances, using its 

long neck to dart out and spear anything it can reach. 

Building large nests out of sticks and dead branches 

farther away from busy areas, this secretive bird 

species can nonetheless form small groups when 

it comes to nesting. Laying up to 8 blue or green 

eggs at a time, they take about 28 days to hatch and 

chicks are fed with regurgitated or live food by both 

parents. 

These herons prefer to stalk the tall grass and reeds 

along the water's edge, and are quiet birds, only 

emitting low guttural sounds.The call is a harsh 

"frarnk" sound.

Brahminy Kite (Haliastur indus) 

This majestic bird of prey is the Brahminy Kite, easily 

identified by its bright white head and chest feathers 

contrasting the brown plumage and black tips of its 

wings. This beautiful visitor to the TGCR greens is 

sometimes spotted stealing tasty morsels from the 

storks and herons, as this species of kite is typically a 

scavenger, preferring to eat dead fish or crabs along 

the riverbeds. 

Brahminy kites are social birds, with incidences of 

kites working together to take on larger birds of 

prey such as eagles and defend their nests. Young 

kite chicks are known to be extremely playful as 

well, throwing leaves into the air to catch them, and 

exhibit a keen intelligence. The call of the Brahminy 

kite is a high pitched “kee-yew” sound.

For Samantha Lee, it all started when she got creative in 

her food preparations for her daughter to eat healthily. 

That was back in 2011 when Instagram was just in its 

infancy. Fast forward today and Samantha has become 

a worldwide sensation with each food post highly 

anticipated by her ravenous followers. She sits down with 

Tropicana Magazine in the midst of her usually hectic day 

to answer a few questions. 

What sparked your interest in cooking and baking? 

I’ve always enjoyed food since I was a child. My mom 

taught me basic cooking when I was about seven. Food 

is also memory for me. The art of cooking and baking 

and when family and friends take the first bite and 

loving it has the ability to motivate me to cook and 

bake more. 

Were you self-taught or did you attend a cooking and 

baking course? 

I’ve always loved cooking and I polished my culinary 

skills at Le Cordon Bleu when I obtained a certification in 

2018. 

You describe yourself as an artist in your Instagram 

account, how would you describe the art you create? 

The moniker of food artist was given to me by the 

media. The food art I create is practical, edible and tells a 

story…a bit like pop culture on a plate! 

What is your favourite dish or cake to cook or bake for 

yourself and your family? 

It’s a traditional Chinese dish called Chicken in glutinous 

rice wine.

When my creations went viral and became a trend for 

many people around the world to create the same. 

Is there any pressure on you now that you have over

No pressure because the number dropped from almost 

a million down to 600k. I’ve never created my dishes for 

fame.

platform? 

Yes, I do that on Instagram.
