GREAT BRITAIN HOCKEY MEN'S CAPTAIN Adam Dixon “Playing on home soil is always special. It’ll be slightly different without spectators and it’s certainly not what we’re used to, but we’re looking forward to these matches. It will feel very strange not having spectators here, but we’ve all played in empty stadiums after the past year, so it won’t be totally alien to us. There’s no doubt that when we’re playing at Lee Valley the fans give us that extra bit of motivation and noise to really get us over the finish line. I think we’ll sorely miss that in these matches. We’ve got the Euros and Olympics later this summer so the Pro League is going to serve as a really good tool for coaches to tinker with tactics and selections. What better way to do that than against a top-quality side like Germany and an exciting fast attacking team like Spain’s. The more match play and exposure we can get, the more we can gel as a team. You learn so many valuable lessons from playing matches that you can’t get in a training environment so the Pro League will serve as a bit of a warm-up for those big competitions coming up. There’s going to be some bumps in the road along the way but it’s great to be playing, especially with grassroots hockey not having had that luxury of being able to play, so we’ve got to take that and display ourselves in the best way possible knowing that other people are really struggling with a lack of sport at the moment. We all know the quality that Germany possess so we’re looking forward to that challenge. As for Spain, they play a very attackminded style of hockey that if you match them toe-to-toe it ends up being an incredibly exciting game, like we proved many times in the past, especially with that first ever Pro League fixture that finished 6-5. I think they were quite a few goals ahead, but we never gave up and ended up coming back in an incredible game. A lot of our development over the past few months has been looking at solid team defence and avoiding conceding cheap goals, so I think we’re well placed to deal with Spain’s threats and frustrate them more than anything. I think with what we’ve got in terms of goal scoring abilities, it’s a game I’m looking at with huge optimism to try and get a result and hopefully start building some momentum towards the Europeans and Olympics. It’s a strange one being in a team sport as the team have qualified for the Olmypics but we’ve got this very tough decision in whittling it down and picking just 16 players which really does throw up some decisions for Danny Kerry and the coaches. There are a few jitters and a bit of nerves around selection, but I think that’s natural. The Olympics are the pinnacle for a hockey player so everyone is rightly wanting to get their name on the team sheet for the 4

It’s been such a long time coming, we’ve had a lot of time to think about Tokyo in terms of how it’s going to be and feel, how we want to be when we’re there and it’s now about making some good things happen. I think the disappointment of Rio maybe does factor in on an individual level. After Rio there was a relatively decent overhaul or coming and going of different players, so what excites me most is that we’re probably going to have a lot of Olympic debutants who don’t have any preconceived ideas about how Rio was on the men’s side of things. They’re coming in with no disappointment, just full excitement and wanting to do their best to get the team on the podium. There’s no doubt that amongst the leadership group, there’s still some open wounds about those Games and they’ll serve as a bit of a compass in guiding us in what we should and shouldn’t be doing and giving us those lessons. It didn’t go to plan but there’s lots that we’ve learned from that experience in Rio. Hopefully we won’t have a repeat of that and we can get on the podium this time around.” 5
