Healing veterans and helping
the environment go hand-in-hand
What does helping the environment
have to do with veterans suffering
from psychological trauma brought
about by their combat experience? A
That is because one organization,
Help Heal Veterans (Heal Vets), is
busy delivering thousands of artsand-crafts
therapy kits to veterans
each month, and most kits are
made largely from recycled materials.
The kits provide an important
therapeutic benefit for veterans and
active-duty military recovering from
wounds, injuries and the long-term
psychological effects of warfare, including
post-traumatic stress disorder
and traumatic brain injury.
Heal Vets kits include leatherwork,
models, woodwork, jewelry, painting,
needlecrafts, poster art, scrapbooks
and more, and are created from materials
that would have otherwise
ended up in landfills.
Heal Vets has been doing this work
for 50 years, and commitment to environmental
sustainability has become
an important and growing part
of its mission.
“Over the last five years, we have
recycled almost one million pounds of
materials,” says Joe McClain, retired
Navy captain and CEO of Heal Vets.
“By upcycling, we responsibly utilize
numerous materials, mostly textiles,
one of the biggest contributors to
landfill waste in the US.”
Indeed, since 2017, Heal Vets has
worked with partner organizations
to repurpose the extraordinary
amounts of potential landfill waste,

Heal Vets is seeking new partners

Are you growing the right type of grass?
Choosing the right type of grass optimizes
the chances that your lawn
will be healthy, beautiful and easy to
maintain. However, experts say that
there are many factors to consider.
“You may have your heart set on
a specific type of grass because of
where you grew up or because the
Joneses down the street have a
beautiful lawn and they grow XYZ
grass. But what’s best for your lawn
depends on where you live now and
your growing conditions,” says landscape
designer Doug Scott of Redeem
Your Ground in Atlanta, Ga.
A free video series from Exmark, a
leading manufacturer of lawn care
equipment, can help you master your
lawn. In a recent Exmark Original
video, “Done In A Weekend, Grass
101,” Scott discusses the various benefits,
maintenance needs and other
considerations of each grass type.
Here he shares some top factors to
keep in mind:
• Climate: Grasses are typically divided
into two temperature categories:
warm-season and cool-season.
Warm-season grasses grow best in
hot, southern climates reaching
80 to 95 degrees, and go dormant
when temperatures consistently
drop below 65 degrees. Species
like Zoysia, St. Augustine, Bahia
and Centipede all grow best in hot,
humid regions, whereas Bermuda
grass grows best in hot, arid areas.
On the other side of things are coolseason
grasses, which grow best in
northern regions where temperatures
fall between 60-70 degrees.
Species include tall and fine Fescue,
Kentucky Bluegrass and annual
and perennial Ryegrass.
Living in the middle, in what’s
known as the “Transitional Zone”
can be both a blessing and a curse.
On the positive side, you may have
more grass choices, but on the
downside, cool-season grasses may
look worn-out by late summer, and
warm-season grasses will be dormant
• Sun and Shade: While there are
exceptions, warm-season grasses
generally grow best in full sun areas
getting 8 or more hours of direct
sunlight daily, and cool-season
grasses grow best in moderate or
medium shade areas getting between
4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight
daily. You may notice that
no one talks about “full shade” —
areas getting less than 4 hours of
sunlight daily — when discussing
grass. That’s because there’s no
grass that thrives in these conditions
• Water: Different types of grass
need different amounts of water to
thrive. Warm-season grasses tend
to be more drought-tolerant and
require less water.
• Use: Heavy-turf grass like Zoysia
or Bermuda stand up to activity
best, whereas cool-season grasses
typically don’t do well in hightraffic
areas where children play or
• Maintenance: What’s required to
maintain a healthy lawn also deserves
consideration. In general,
cool-season grasses cost less to
install but more to maintain. Because
they don’t form that dense
carpet-like structure that heat-loving
grasses do, cool-season grasses
need to be watered and tended

How and why to build a raised garden bed this season
Fairly easy to construct and even
easier to maintain, raised garden
beds are a great way to raise plants
and vegetables in the comfort and
convenience of your backyard.
In a recent episode of the Exmark
Original Series, “Done-in-A-Weekend-Extreme,”
and show host, Doug Scott, spoke
to organic gardener Joe Lamp’l of
“Growing a Greener World” about the
ins and outs of raised garden beds.
Here are some of the top insights
and tips Lamp’l shared.
• Why use raised garden beds?
A raised garden bed can help facilitate
the ideal growing environment,
as most people don’t have
that perfect soil naturally in their
yard. Their accessibility makes
them easier to work in and maintain.
Plus, they’re a nice architectural
design element in any land-
wood, as it lasts almost as long and
doesn’t contain chemicals. Other
materials you have around the
home and yard, such as rocks, old
tubs, etc., can work too.
• Where’s the best location? Build
your raised garden bed on level
ground, in full sun exposure near a

raised bed, you’ll need:
• Nine 6-inch x 6-inch x 12-foot cedar

• A saw and extension cord
• One box of 10-inch heavy-duty
exterior wood screws
• Ten 24-inch x 1/2-inch rebar

each measuring 10-feet 6-inches
in length. And six, 6 x 6 timbers, each
measuring 4-feet 6-inches in length.
Drill rebar holes in each timber.
2. Once the first layer of bed has
been placed, leveled and squared in
your desired location, fasten the corners
using 10-inch wood screws. Secure
the entire layer to the ground
with 10 pieces of rebar.
3. Place the second layer of timbers,
staggering the corners and fastening
them with wood screws. Secure this
layer to the first with ten 10-inch galvanized
4. Install galvanized cloth to prevent

take a cue from the professionals and
build a raised garden bed for best results.
• What’s the ideal size? The main
rule of the thumb applies to width.
The bed should be no wider than
4 feet, as you never want to compact
the soil when working. Length
however, is based on personal preference
and needs. As far as height
is concerned, you want the roots
to be able to grow out and down
as much as possible — 6-inches at
minimum. While 12-inches is common,
anything higher is a bonus.
• What materials work best?

available and economical material

high performance, particularly when
it comes to energy efficiency, storm
protection, and of course, smooth,
easy and quiet operation. After all,
it’s hard to feel relaxed if simply getting
outdoors is a struggle.
Boost comfort and ambiance by applying
the same attention to detail
when decorating your patio as you
would indoors. Beyond furniture that’s
comfortable enough to lounge on all
day or evening, incorporate throws,
pillows and even rugs. Add splashes
of color and vibrancy by hanging outdoor
wall art, or, if you’re feeling extra
creative, painting a mural.
Paper lanterns hung above your

3 hacks to make more time for fun this summer
Even relaxation and fun take some
preparation. But there’s no reason to
work harder than you need to. Follow
these hacks to get to the good stuff faster
1. Optimized Travel: Traveling by car
this summer? Road navigation apps
like Waze combine GPS and real-time
crowd-sourced information to help you
find the best route based on traffic conditions.
But remember, sometimes the
journey is also an opportunity for fun
and there are apps for people who
embrace that mindset. RoadTrippers,
for example, can help you make the
most of the mileage, as it offers information
about scenic detours, local
attractions and more.
2. Waterside Fun: Whether you’re
hanging out poolside, lakeside or at the
beach, faster, smarter set-up means
there will be more time to unwind.
Luckily, there is a brand new pool flotation
technology designed to help you
get out on the water faster. Check out
Swimways Spring Floats, an ultra-comfortable

to take the stress and struggle out of
setting up your float.
3. Summer Meals: When cooking is
accompanied by fresh air and the
sounds of nature, it will feel less like a
chore and more like leisure. So don’t
wait for holidays and special occasions
to enjoy your backyard grill. You don’t
even need to wait until the weekend.
Select one day a week to do all your
indoor meal prep. Then, make the most
of summer evenings by grilling and
dining outdoors all week long.
From road trips to pool excursions,
summer fun awaits, and with the right

Add mustard, spices, extract and water.
Cover. Purée until completely smooth.
4. Unroll crescent dough onto clean
surface (do not separate triangles).
Brush about 2 tablespoons of the Carrot
Mustard Sauce evenly over each sheet
of crescent dough. Reserve remaining
sauce for serving. Use a pizza cutter to
cut along perforations, then cut each
triangle lengthwise into three separate
triangles. Place one cooled carrot on
the wide side of each dough triangle,
then roll towards pointy ends to wrap
carrots in dough. Place wrapped carrots
tail-end down about 1 inch apart on
parchment-lined sheet pan.
5. Bake 12 to 15 minutes until dough is
golden brown, rotating pan halfway
through cooking. Serve warm with
remaining sauce for dipping.
Makes 32 servings.
Hall also came up with a Warm Carrot
Salad with Creamy Lemon Dressing.
Layers of roasted carrots are lightly
spiced with cayenne and black pepper
to complement naturally sweet Granny
Smith apples, golden raisins, and pineapple.
A simple, creamy lemon dressing
drizzled on top adds a slightly tangy
pop to finish this bright and colorful
Here, Hall shares some clever tips for
creating carrot-inspired meals:
• To make the most of your time in
the kitchen, peel your carrots using
up and down strokes to make sure
there are no wasted movements, and
you get the job done faster.
• Or buy carrot sticks or baby carrots
to reduce prep and peeling time. You
can quickly dice them at home for
soups and stews.
• Carrots are beautiful and can be the
star of your dish. Adding multi-hued
carrots will make simple dishes
• You can use spices, herbs, and other
ingredients as supporting cast members
to add great flavor and make
your dish taste even more amazing.

Summer safety tips for your pet
From heat waves to fireworks, summer
can take a toll on pets’ emotional
and physical wellness. According to
some pet experts, the heart of relief for
a number of common seasonal pet woes
is CBD. Here are some insights into
how to use it, plus additional measures
you can take for a safe, healthy summer
• Fireworks and Thunder: Unexpected
noises can be extremely frightening
for pets, causing what’s known as
situational stress. If possible, try
administering Calming CBD-infused
Edibites, which contains soothing
and relaxing properties, about an
hour before you expect fireworks or
thunderstorms to occur. (Helpful
hint: it can also be used to relieve
situational stress associated with
travel, guests, etc.)
Exercise also helps. Whether you
take an extra long walk or play fetch,
wearing your pet out earlier in the day
might help them stay calm or even
sleep through noise disruptions. Additionally,
you can prepare by setting up
a quiet space for your pet, full of their
favorite blankets and toys. Finally, be
mindful that pets often react to loud
noises by running away. According to
the ASPCA, one-in-five pets that go
missing run off after hearing loud noises
like fireworks. Bring cats indoors
during storms and fireworks. If you
must take a dog outside, keep them
securely leashed. Microchips and up-todate
ID tags can help you safely reunite
with your pet should they go missing.
• Heat: If you’re sweating, there’s a
good chance your pet is too. Keep
pets hydrated by constantly refilling
their bowls with fresh, clean water.
Choose mornings or evenings for
exercising with dogs to avoid the hottest
part of the day. On scorchers,
avoid paw-to-pavement contact, letting
your dog walk in the grass
instead. If your pup’s paws do get
affected by the hot pavement, applying
a topical CBD solution such as
Canna Care from Pet Releaf can help
relieve the burn. Finally, beat the
heat with regular grooming — however,
don’t shave your pet’s fur —
their coat protects them from sunburn.
• Allergies: Allergies can wear pets
down in numerous ways, including
weakening their immune system.
CBD hemp oil however can offer an
immunity boost by activating the

which can cause pets to scratch and
bite their skin, only worsening irritation.
To treat rash, consider using
CBD hemp oil to support a healthy
inflammatory response and ease
stress, along with a topical CBD product

• Hip and Joint Discomfort: Summer
may mean an uptick in nature hikes
and long days at the dog park. As a
result, your dog may experience hip
or joint discomfort. Consider adding
a beneficial supplement to their
everyday regimen, like Hip & Joint
Edibites, which contains full-spectrum

With a little creativity, you can ditch
the plastic utensils, baggies and singleuse

To substantially reduce your family’s

4 ways to get fit with friends and family this summer
With warm weather, longer days,
and more free time, it’s easy to find
ways to stay fit in summer without a
gym. And while you may squeeze in a
solo workout here and there, making
fitness a social activity can keep participants
motivated and accountable.
Summertime can be a perfect time
to establish new fitness routines with
friends or family members. If you’re
new to finding workout buddies, here
are four ways to get started – as well
as shoe suggestions to help keep everyone
comfortable and stylish this
1. Create your own fun run: In-person
races may still be few and far between
this summer, however, it’s still
possible to enjoy the love of running.
Map out a nature trail to hit once a
week, sign up for virtual fun runs,
or set up a series of running relay
events in the neighborhood.
Men’s shoe to try: The Asics Mens
GT 1000 10 running shoe is designed
specifically for active runners and
includes GEL technology cushioning
in the heel to absorb shock. Additionally,
the AHAR Plus outsole holds up
longer than the high abrasion rubber.
2. Learn a new sport: From tennis
to beach volleyball and from soccer to
golf, there are various ways to experience
healthy activities as a group
while adhering to social distancing
guidelines. This can also be a great
time to offer younger children the opportunity
to try something new!
Boy’s shoe to try: Sporty, fashionable
and comfortable, the Nike Boys
Reposto sneaker is well-suited for a
variety of athletic adventures. Its
lightweight design and cushioned
insole provide comfort with every
step, and the mesh construction adds
3. Participate in an online class:
Whether you enjoy Zumba classes or
strength training programs, the online
options to exercise are abundant
these days. If you have several workout
friends, set up a shared calendar
and let everyone pick a class.
Women’s shoe to try: The Brooks
Womens Adrenaline GTS 2 running
shoe combines style and performance
in a slim silhouette. Available in three
colors, it even provides on-trend metallic
accents in gold or silver tones.
4. Lead by example: The next time
you go for a run in the park or hit the
court for a quick pick-up game, bring
the kids. By highlighting the value of
exercise and modeling proper form,
you can help them gain the skills
they need to be active for life. (Plus,
the enthusiasm you have for your favorite
hobby can be contagious!)
Girl’s shoe to try: For a style that
brings comfort fashion-forward, consider
the Adidas Girls Racer TR 2.0
Sneaker. It comes in navy, white, grey,
or clear – and features a lightweight
rubber outsole to keep her ready for
any family activity.
For a one-stop-shopping experience
and shoe trends for families, friends,
and new fitness partners, visit the
Athletic Shop at Rack Room Shoes
in stores or online at rackroomshoes.
Exercise shouldn’t be a chore. With
new gear, a great attitude, and a
sense of adventure, getting fit this
summer can be fun for all involved!

Tips to raise earth-conscious kids
Children are never too young to
learn the importance of sustainability
or begin adopting eco-friendly
habits, and experts say it all starts
“Kids are built to absorb information
at a tremendous pace,” says
Anna Yudina, senior director, Marketing
Initiatives, The Toy Association.
“During playtime especially,
they form deep emotional connections
to the values they’re learning.
This means that you can help your
child embrace an earth-conscious
mindset simply by making it fun.”
Check out these tips and insights
from The Genius of Play — a national
movement to educate parents and
caregivers about play’s vital role in
• Eco-Friendly Crafting: Crafting
that uses household objects
can demonstrate creative ways to
reduce, reuse and recycle. For example,
you can construct bird feeders
from milk jugs and then have
kids decorate them. The best part?
This is a sustainable DIY project
that benefits wildlife, plus gives
children an opportunity to observe
flying visitors to the yard.
You can also craft your own musical
instruments. For example,
rainsticks, so-named because they
mimic the natural sounds of rain,
can be made by filling paper towel
rolls with uncooked rice. Or, keep
the beat using homemade maracas
made by filling empty plastic bottles
with dried beans. Finally, with
just a few rubber bands and some
glue, you can transform yesterday’s
cereal box into a guitar. Now you
have enough instruments to start
your own band!
• Learn Through Play: Kids can
benefit from toys as early as one
month old with sensory play that
helps stimulate senses and develops
motor skills. However, they develop
habits and values that will
last a lifetime during ages 3-9 the
most. During these years, introduce
toys that reinforce the importance
of sustainability. For example,
a plush sea turtle can help a
younger child understand the connection
between plastic pollution
and the health of marine creatures.
For a tween or teen, a wind turbine
science kit can build STEM skills
and interest, while introducing the
concepts of sustainable energy and
• Outdoor Fun: Warmer, longer
days expand opportunities to play
outdoors, be active and explore the
natural world. Build a nature scavenger
hunt in your backyard or
take an ecology walk and observe
critters, rocks and leaves with
magnifying glasses. Bonus: beyond
boosting an appreciation for the
environment, active play is critical
for child development, helping
hone coordination, balance and motor
skills and setting the stage for a
lifetime of good health.
• Pretend Play: Pretend play is key
for developing curiosity and critical
thinking, and there are many
avenues for role-playing activities
that teach the importance of sustainability.
Using action toys, kids
can be anything they want to be,
from farmers to explorers to environmental
play also presents a fun way to
introduce eco-friendly habits that
kids can adopt in their daily lives,
like turning the water off while
they brush their teeth or reducing
their plastic footprint by opting for
From building a mini greenhouse
to studying animal habitats, there
are tons of playful learning ideas
for indoor and outdoor fun available
at thegeniusofplay.org, a great

Kids are absorbing new information
all the time, especially when they’re
having fun. To raise earth-conscious
