Obetz reviews 2020
By Linda Dillman
Staff Writer
Calling 2020 a “notorious year,” Obetz
Mayor Angie Kirk is looking forward to
better days ahead, while looking back over
a year that forced the village to revisit the
way it does business, conducts programming,
and keeps employees on the payroll.
“In the face of these new challenges, the
Obetz staff and elected officials had to
rethink the way we had done things in the
past,” said Kirk in the village’s annual
report. “We worked hard to come up with
new ways to hold our traditional events.
Things were rescheduled or redesigned to
accommodate the rules and policies associated
with the pandemic. In the spring of
2020, we held a rolling car show. The
Rolling Car Show allowed people to come
out onto their porches or into their front
yards and watch as classic and custom cars
rolled by on a beautiful spring day.”
With planning and cooperation, Obetz
hosted Hamilton Township High School’s
2020 graduation at Fortress Obetz in a
drive through graduation ceremony. It was
the first of its kind event allowed graduating
seniors to accept their diplomas in person
in a quasi-traditional graduation.
With heavy pandemic restrictions in
place, Kirk said the village was forced to
close the Obetz Athletic Club. However, in
order to continue providing workout opportunities
for residents, the OAC Lite–an
outdoor workout space on a converted basketball
court was put in place.
“Finally, as the year ended, we
redesigned our Christmas celebration to
create a drive through Trail of Lights that
community members could view from their
vehicles,” said Kirk. “We also designed a
new Santa Claus float and Santa was able
to ride up and down the streets of Obetz
waving to our children.”
Village Administrator Rod Davisson said
he expected 2020 to be a rough year for the
village, but Obetz fared better than anticipated
with new housing starts and a dramatic
increase in income tax and carryover.
“Hopefully that path continues,” said
Davisson. “We aimed for a $2.5 million carryover
and ended with $5 million.”
An extra $2 million of that carryover
was transferred into Obetz’s capital budget,
bringing the total to $3 million and
affording the opportunity to accomplish
more capital improvement projects in
2021. In addition, while the village was
shut down, employees spent their time
training online. Forty-four employees were
certified in First Aid and 30 received
OSHA certification.
Human Resources Director Derek
Duncan said, “With the help of our IT
department, our employees were fitted with
new laptops, cell phones, and Microsoft
Teams accounts to maintain work efficiency
while working from home for parts of the
year. Our Obetz team made significant
achievements in training hours completed,
courses completed, and certificates earned.”
Community Services and Planning
Director Stacy Boumis said the housing
market in Obetz is robust and that the
Butler Farms and Bixby Grove housing
developments continue to expand because
land is still available. All available lots in
Mulberry Grove were platted and sold and
Walnut Run started selling lots in 2020.
“Central Ohio was buzzing with the
news that Sheetz was entering the market,”
said Boumis. “In 2020, the land for
the store was annexed and the Final
Development Plan approved. The store is
located at the corner of Toy Road and Alum
Creek Drive. “Sheetz will provide needed
convenience services including made to
order foods for the tens of thousands of
people employed in Obetz’s industrial
parks and travelers using the
Rickenbacker Airport.”
According to Economic Development
Director Stacie Davisson, Zenni (Optical)
USA expects to create 189 full-time positions,
generating $8.2 million in new annual
payroll. It is an online retailer that sells
prescription and non-prescription eyeglasses,
sunglasses, sports glasses, and goggles.
A new Fresenius Dialysis Center provides
in-center and home dialysis services.
It is located in the Walnut Creek
Development behind Ohio Health
Emergency on Alum Creek Drive.
Eagles for a Cause walkathon
to benefit autistic students
By Linda Dillman
Staff Writer
Members of the Madison Christian basketball
teams exchanged hoops and the court for pavement–
at least for one day–in support of a first annual
walkathon event benefitting autistic students at the
Bridgeway Academy of Ohio.
“Eagles for a Cause has been a Madison Christian
School sponsored event for four years now and born
from Athletic Director, Andy Scholz,” said girls varsity
basketball team head coach Jeff Howell. “All athletic
teams at the school have selected a cause–breast cancer,
autism, sepsis, etc.–that is close to them where
they will raise funds from t-shirt sales, athletic event
proceeds, etc. and donate all proceeds to the cause that
they have selected.”
Howell said he came up with the idea after COVID
shut down most activities and close interactions. He
thought that an outdoor event was the safest thing his
athletes could do and, at the same time, raise awareness
and funds for autism at Bridgeway Academy.
Howell has a nephew with autism who attends the
Bridgeway Academy of Ohio (located near Obetz), the
team’s scorekeeper has a daughter who suffers from
autism, and he knows there are many families are personally
touched by autism.
“I approached Bridgeway four years ago to discuss
becoming a long-term partner where our team would
put on basketball clinics, come to the school to read, or
play games and other things to interact with the special
needs children,” said Howell. “Our first Eagles for
a Cause event was a regular season basketball game at
Madison Christian where proceeds from t-shirt, ticket
and concession sales netted $1,000 for Bridgeway. The
partnership has been a tremendous success and we
hope to expand the reach to our entire school and not
just our basketball program.”
According to Howell, Bridgeway Academy is a nonprofit
education and therapy center serving children
with autism and developmental disabilities. It was
founded by speech-language pathologist Abby David
and music therapist Erin Nealy in 2005 as Helping
Hands Center for Special Needs.
The Eagles for a Cause walkathon, open to the public,
was held May 15 at the Bridgeway Academy, 1350
Alum Creek Drive. Participants included Madison
Franklin County Auditor Michael Stinziano
announced an extension of the dog licensing deadline.
The new deadline, based on COVID-19 relief passed by
the General Assembly, is July 1. This extension will
allow dog owners more time to purchase or renew a
license without a penalty.
“Your auditor’s office wants to ensure that everyone
can get their dog license free of penalty,” Stinziano
said. “Licensing your dog is required by the state of
Ohio, and I want to make dog licensing easy and accessible
for all Franklin County residents throughout the
COVID-19 pandemic. One goal since I took office as
your Franklin County Auditor has been to increase the
rate of licensed dogs and encourage responsible pet
ownership.”
The 2020 licensing season saw 99,795 licensed dogs
in Franklin County.
The cost to license a spayed or neutered dog is $18
for one year, $54 for three years, or $180 for a permanent
license. For a non-spayed or neutered dog, the
cost is $35 for one year, $105 for three years, or $350
for a permanent license.
In addition to being required by state law, dog
licensing ensures that any lost dog is returned quickly
to their owners. Most funds generated from dog licensing
support the Franklin County Dog Shelter and
Adoption Center.
Though the auditor’s office public counters remain
closed for the health and safety of Franklin County
residents, dog licenses can always be purchased online
at doglicense.franklincountyohio.gov.
Memorial Day events
By Rick Palsgrove
Managing Editor
Memorial Day is a solemn and moving
tradition for Americans - whether they live
in big cities, small towns, or the countryside
- dating back to the day’s origins in the
post-Civil War period.
Each Memorial Day of the past, present,
and future is special in its own right as we
pay respects to the fallen as flags gently
flutter by each tombstone and flowers
grace the graves. Time rolls on. Memories
of some things in life may fade, but not the
memory of the sacrifices made by these,
our honored fallen members of the military.
Memorial Day endures and is an elegant,
dignified reminder to us all of the
profound sacrifices made by members of
our communities in service to their country.
Memorial Day ceremonies include:
Asbury
In years past, a Memorial Day ceremony
has been held in Asbury Cemetery,
4760 Winchester Pike, Columbus.
However, as of press time, American
Legion Robert Dutro Post 486 could not
confirm that a ceremony would be held at
Asbury Cemetery this year.
Canal Winchester
VFW Post #10523 will host Canal
Winchester’s annual Memorial Day ceremony
on May 31 at Union Grove Cemetery,
400 Winchester-Cemetery Road, beginning
at 10:30 a.m. The ceremony’s keynote is
still to be determined.
“We are not limiting the crowd, but will
be enforcing all public health guidelines
including wearing masks and social distancing
(due to the ongoing coronavirus
pandemic), said Hannah Voss, Canal
Winchester events and communications
coordinator. “The event will also feature a
dedication of a bench in honor of those who
served during the global war on terrorism.”
Lockbourne
Lockbourne’s annual Memorial Day
Parade and Celebration will be held May
31 to honor veterans and to recognize, “The
Warrior Legacy: Generations of Service in
the Armed Forces.”
The event begins at noon with a parade
through the village followed by a ceremony
directly after the parade at the new
Lockbourne Veterans Park, 95 Landis St.
Seniors from Hamilton Local Schools who
have enlisted in the military will also be
recognized. The parade will begin at the
east end of Commerce Street, head west,
turn left on Williams Street, left on
Mechanics Street, left on Vause Street, and
ends at the Veterans Park.
“At this point, we do not have a speaker
for the ceremony, however, during the ceremony
we will highlight the generations of
military families in the area,” said
Lockbourne Mayor Christie Ward. “Each
year, Lockbourne honors a current or former
resident who served in the military.
This year our honoree is the McCumber
family, who have three generations of veterans.”
“We anticipate a strong presence of veterans
from the area,” said Lockbourne
Deputy Administrator Rachel Ricker.
“This event is a central part of the village,
Hamilton Township, and surrounding
area. If you are a part of a military
family, please let us know. We would
love to include your family name in our
Memorial Day Parade and Celebration.”
Groveport will be held May 31 at 1:30 p.m.
in the Groveport Cemetery, which is located
on Wirt Road in Groveport near
Heritage Park.
The event will be scaled down due to the
ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
“The Memorial Day event will be similar
to last year’s. It will be a small gathering
and those in attendance will socially
distance,” said Groveport City
Administrator B.J. King. “There will not be
a Memorial Day parade this year.”
The ceremony will be streamed on the
city of Groveport’s Facebook page. The
guest speaker will be Motts Military
Museum Director Warren Motts.
Groveport American Legion Robert
Groveport to hold Fourth of July celebration
By Rick Palsgrove
Managing Editor
The city of Groveport will once again celebrate
the Fourth of July this year after
last year’s event was cancelled due to the
ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The city will hold its Independence Day
celebration, which will feature a parade
and fireworks, on July 3.
“It is important to hold the event this
year to give the community a traditional
Independence Day celebration,” said
Groveport City Administrator B.J. King.
“It has been a long 14 months and things
are progressing towards normalcy. We are
all wanting to get back to doing our normal
activities and way of life. Other central
Ohio communities also plan to have
Independence Day celebrations so we are
not the stand alone. I feel like what we
plan can be done in a safe manner. Plus,
come July, I anticipate the situation with
COVID-19 will be significantly better.”
Cruiser Park, 4677 Bixby Road. For information
contact jreeves@groveport.org.
At what age can players join?
Players can join at U7 (2015 birth year) and
play U8.
What is the difference between PRIDE SC
and recreation soccer?
PSC provides a more developmentally focused
program that will better help prepare players for
the next level than a recreation program.
This is accomplished by a professional,
licensed coaching staff in a competitive environment
with 3 times as many training opportunities.
Where are training/games?
PSC trains and hosts home games in Canal
Winchester, Groveport, Ashville and Grove City.
League games and tournaments are mostly in
Central Ohio but can be throughout Ohio depending
on the age and level of the team.

Memorial Day Section
Facts
about
Memorial
Day
•It took a long time for Memorial Day to become a federal
holiday. Despite tracing its origins to the immediate
aftermath of the Civil War, Memorial Day did not become
an official federal holiday until 1971, more than a century
after the war ended. This is the same year the holiday
was officially designated as taking place on the last
Monday in May.
•Debate exists about which town has the longest history
of celebrating Memorial Day. A handful of towns
claim to be the first celebrants of Memorial Day. That
debate figures to continue in perpetuity, but History.com
notes that Waterloo, N.Y., was officially recognized by
U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson as the birthplace of
Memorial Day in 1966. Doylestown, Pa., and Rochester,
Wisc., are some other towns that claim to have celebrated
Memorial Day since the mid-1860s.
Veterans
Hall of Fame
nominations
The deadline for submitting nominations
for the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame
is approaching and the organization wants
to hear from those who know former service
members who are excelling and making
a difference in society.
Now in its 28th year, the Hall of Fame
recognizes those who served in the U.S.
Armed Forces and continue to contribute
to our communities, state, and nation
through exceptional acts of volunteerism,
advocacy, professional distinction, public
service, or philanthropy.
Each year, the Ohio Veterans Hall of
Fame inducts up to 20 veterans based on
recommendations from an executive committee
of veterans from throughout the
state and approval from the governor of
Ohio.
The deadline to submit nomination
forms for consideration for the 2021 class
of the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame is June
1. The Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame accepts
nominations for those who would be
inducted posthumously.
To be considered, the veteran must
meet the following criteria:
•Be a past or current Ohio resident
•Have received an honorable discharge
•Be of good moral character
This Hall of Fame sets the standard for
recognizing Ohio’s veterans for accomplishments
beyond their military service.
For more information or to nominate a
veteran, call 614-644-0898 or email halloffame@dvs.ohio.gov.

Community Shred Day
Eleven years ago, Dwayne R. Spence Funeral Home in Pickerington was looking
for a way to give back to the community that has supported them for over 50
years.
So the funeral home established a free Community Shred Day. They contracted
and paid for Royal Document Destruction to set up an onsite shred truck which
allows the documents to be shredded at drop-off and give individuals the peace of
mind that their documents are being shredded immediately and not transported offsite.
Royal Document Destruction takes great security measures dealing with valuable
and vulnerable documentation. In 2019 this event kept 33,900 pounds of paper
out of landfills saving 85 cubic yards of landfill space, 1,017 pounds of pollutants
out of the atmosphere, 69,495 KWh of energy saved, 118,650 gallons of water, and
288 trees. The Community Shred Day has grown each year from 225 vehicles dropping
off documents to between 800 – 1,000 in 2018 and 2019.
This Shred Day truly became a community event as Dwayne R. Spence Funeral
Home partnered with the Pickerington Food Pantry to collect non-perishable food
items and monetary donations, the Pickerington Lions Club collecting used eyeglasses,
St. Vincent de Paul Society accepting used clothing and household items,
and TDR Recycling for disposing of used electronics. The Pickerington Area Boy
Scouts Troop 256 is a vital part of this event helping to unload boxes and bags from
the vehicles and loading them into the shredding containers. This allows participants
to stay in their vehicle and avoid heavy lifting. Dwayne R. Spence Funeral
Home rewards the Boy Scouts with t- shirts and a pizza party at the end of the day,
and gives the Troup a generous donation. The Boy Scouts also are able to earn credit
towards their “Pulp and Paper” merit badge.
Dwayne R. Spence Funeral Home invites you to join in their 11th Annual Shred
Day on Saturday June 5, 2021 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at their Pickerington location.
Sound the Alarm campaign
American Red Cross volunteers will
Sound the Alarm in Columbus as part of a
national effort to educate 100,000 people
about home fire safety in high-risk neighborhoods
this spring.
Columbus area residents are encouraged
to call 844-207-4509 to request a virtual
education appointment and referral to
partner agency for installation of free
smoke alarms.
“Home fires remain the most frequent
disaster, yet most of us don’t realize we
have just two minutes to safely escape,”
said Cory Paul, executive director of the
Continued from page 1
with Involve, LLC.
“I was so lucky to work with him
(Payne) for the time that I did,” said
Duncan, who also serves as a Hamilton
Middle School cheerleading coach. “When
the director position was offered to me, I
knew that Vince had given me the tools I
needed to fulfill this role. I hope to keep
Vince’s legacy going, and to do what would
have made him proud.”
Duncan originally came to the district
three years ago when she started coaching
the middle school cheerleading squad. She
led the team to first-place honors in their
first year of competition and also serves on
Greater Columbus Ohio Chapter.
Central Ohio residents are also encouraged
to visit SoundTheAlarm.org and
pledge to prepare against home fires.
Sound the Alarm is part of the larger
Home Fire Campaign. Since launching the
campaign in 2014, the Red Cross has
helped save 864 lives across the country by
helping families create escape plans and
installing free smoke alarms. This work is
made possible with Red Cross’ partners,
who have helped make more than 900,000
households safer in at-risk communities.
School Cheerleading Coaches Association.
“My husband is an alum of Hamilton
Local School District and an employee of
the village of Obetz, so it made sense for us
to stay in this area,” said Duncan. “We love
living in Obetz, as it is so close to downtown
Columbus and is experiencing a lot of
growth. When I was job hunting, Hamilton
Local School District was extremely attractive
to me as it was close to home, has a
great atmosphere of family and community,
and named as Top Workplace by
‘Columbus CEO.’”
REVIEW
Continued from page 1
The 2020 fall football season consisted
of a tackle football and cheer program and
a flag football program. Obetz partnered
with Bally Sports to offer a full-contact
alternative that met weekly in the Fortress
where participants spent the first half of
the day working on techniques and fundamentals,
and then finish each day with
competition.
“Our turnout for the tackle football and
cheer season was not greatly impacted by
COVID,” said Youth Sports Director Jacob
Gifford. “In fact, we had about a dozen
more kids in 2020 than we did in 2019. Our
season kicked off in July with our annual
combine.”
While the pandemic created challenges
for other facilities in and around central
Ohio, it presented new opportunities for
the staff at Fortress Obetz, which hosted
many first-time events in 2020, including
the Under Armour All-America Middle
School and High School Combine and
Camp, OHSAA Junior High and High
School Cross Country State
Championships, OHSAA High School Post-
Season Tournament Games, National
Fallen Firefighters 9/11 Tribute Stair
Climb and the Community Cup presented
by the Columbus Foundation.
Several safety measures related to the
pandemic were developed and installed
throughout municipal buildings by the village
Research and Development department.
Workers also designed, built, and
installed more than two dozen custom
lighted holiday displays.
“We constructed the displays in rebar
that we custom bent and welded before
attaching the lights,” said Bill Baker. “We
also integrated computer control units to
the displays to allow for lighting effects.
Baker said his team works on special
projects and develops cost saving production
techniques such as a custom stage and
barrier system that allowed for a drivethrough
graduation for Hamilton
Township High School. The department
also expanded its internal production capabilities
this year by integrating a new pipe
bending machine and several smaller tools.
“From its days as a stagecoach junction,
to its settling in 1834, its incorporation in
1924, and its declaration of Charter in
2010, Obetz has thrived for nearly 200
years,” said Davisson. “In 2021, Obetz
expects to exceed 5,000 residents and
become a city under Ohio law. We will
begin a new chapter in the history of
Obetz.”

Groveport swimming pool opens Memorial Day weekend
By Rick Palsgrove
Managing Editor
The Groveport Aquatic Center swimming pool will open
Memorial Day weekend.
“First and foremost, it is important for us to open the
Aquatic Center this year to provide a recreation opportunity
for the community,” said Groveport City Administrator
B.J. King. “We are progressing toward a sense of normalcy.
I am hopeful as the season progresses we are able to roll
back some of the restrictions. The plan we are opening
with is fluid and we will monitor it throughout the season.
I look forward to the day that we can have a normal aquatics
season — we are getting there.”
Last summer the Groveport Aquatic Center did not
operate per the recommendation of the Franklin County
Health Department due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Groveport Recreation Director Kyle Lund and
Aquatics Manager Seth Bower met with officials from
Franklin County Public Health on April 22 to discuss the
city pool’s Operations Plan, which outlines how the pool
will safely operate this summer during the ongoing coronavirus
pandemic. Franklin County Public Health endorsed
the plan and the pool will open. Under the Groveport
Aquatic Center Operations Plan:
•Season passes will not be sold due to uncertainties,
social distancing mandates, and a “desire by the city to serve
as many people as possible.” Patrons may only buy day passes
at a cost of $8 for Groveport residents and $12 for non-residents.
Those age 2 and younger are admitted free. Group
rate discounts are not available. Day passes are only valid
for the session purchased (see session times below) and may
not be transferred from one date to another.
•The pool will be open May 29-31; closed June 1-3; open
June 4 to Aug. 15; closed Aug. 16-20; open Aug. 21-22;
closed Aug. 23-27; open Aug. 28-29; closed Aug. 30 to Sept.
3; and open Sept. 4-6.
•Operating hours will be from noon to 3 p.m.; closed
from 3-4 p.m. for additional disinfecting; and open from 4-
7 p.m. On July 4 the pool will be open from 1-4 p.m. and
from 5-8 p.m.
•The maximum capacity per each time block is 160
patrons. (Normal maximum capacity is 1,000 patrons.)
The maximum occupancy may be less during any session
or day due to certified lifeguard availability.
•Face masks required while waiting in line, entering
the facility, while walking on the pool deck, using the restroom,
leaving the facility, and when talking with city staff.
Face masks are not required while sitting at your on deck
or grass space or while at a picnic table eating and drinking.
Face coverings are not permitted to be worn while in
the water. Face masks are not required if under age 10,
you have a medical respiratory condition, or when communicating
with the hearing impaired where the ability to se
the mouth is needed for communication.
•There is a six foot social distancing requirement both
in and out of the water.
•The following amenities will not be available: lazy river,
in-water playground with kiddie slide; lounge/deck chairs
(patrons may bring their own); drinking fountains; and personal
flotation devices (patrons may bring their own).
•The following amenities will be available: zero depth
entry pool; leisure pool; two 1-meter diving boards; two
water slides; tots sprayground; vending machines; restrooms;
lockers; and picnic tables.
•No special aquatic related events will be held.
duty at the pool during a previous summer swim season.
City officials plan to open the pool Memorial Day
weekend and follow coronavirus pandemicsafety
restrictions.
Groveport Director of Facilities and Parks Management
Tom Byrne said in a written report to council, “The outdoor
pool is now filled with water, all pumps are installed, the
playground is repaired, and hopefully all the systems will
operate as designed.”
“e Paper Tigers” is a little gem of a film
The middle-aged man seeking revenge
trope has been at the forefront of the action
genre for a while, but the latest entry offers
something new and more realistic for those
who may be tiring of the same old thing.
Working from a script inspired by some
of his favorite martial arts films in childhood,
director Tran Quoc Bao lovingly
pokes fun of these men of action, posing the
question as to what would happen if they
were not only middle-aged and out for
revenge, but out-of-shape and out-of-skill
too.
When we meet these men who are seeking
revenge in “The Paper Tigers,”
vengeance is the last thing on their minds.
In fact, it is their actions at this stage in
their life that could create an origin story
for villains everywhere.
You see, these men are not yet men.
They are teens in the prime of their lives
and are widely thought to be some of the
best kung fu disciples in the Seattle area.
For years, these “three tigers” have been
learning under the tutelage of the respected
Sifu Cheung (Roger Yuan), who surprisingly
does not run his small martial arts
operation like Sensei John Kreese. Though
insanely disciplined while training, he
allows his proteges to let loose in beimo
challenges which often lead to the public
The Reel Deal
embarrassment of their
challenges. Thankfully,
these defeats are only
captured on VHS
footage and will likely
be blurred beyond
recognition in the near
future.
Flying high on
their success, the trio
appear ready to take
the leap to heights
Dedra
Cordle
unknown in their sport, but an incident in
Japan causes them to drift away from each
other, their beloved Sifu, and all of the lessons
they learned under his care.
Fast forward 25 years and the tigers’
unequivocal leader Danny “8 Hands”
(played by Alain Uy) is now using his quick
handed skills to steer his minivan through
the expressway while answering his phone
at a thankless insurance job. Though able
to smooth talk his way out of trouble at
work, he does not have that same gift when
it comes to his ex-wife (Jae Suh Park) and
their unimpressed preteen son Ed (Joziah
Lagonoy).
After coming home one night after disappointing
his family once again with his
non-stop work habits, he is “pounced upon”
by his childhood friend and fellow tiger
Hing (Ron Yuan) who has put on some
pounds over the decades. “A workplace
accident,” he states defensively to those
who point it out — and they do, constantly.
While catching up on the years spent
apart, Hing informs Danny that their Sifu
recently died of an apparent heart attack.
Before agreeing to go, Danny tells Hing
that they need to keep this information
from their third tiger Jim (Mykel Shannon
Jenkins) because he does not want to see
him ever again.
During the service, they run into an old
nemesis of theirs who they constantly
embarrassed during those notorious beimo
challenges of yore. But while they may
have given up on practicing kung fu, Carter
“No Hands” (Michael Page) has not.
Wanting to get a bit of revenge for this
childhood suffering, Sifu Carter dangles
the rumor that Sifu Cheung was killed by
an unknown fourth protégé of his and challenges
them to get justice for their fallen
mentor.
Knowing that they cannot say no to the
challenge laid down before them, Danny
and Hing determine that they need Jim in
order to solve this mystery and apprehend
this dangerous suspect. But they soon realize
that muscle memory doesn’t really
apply to them, and that their creaky joints
may give them away — or give out entirely
— before they can bring them to justice.
While a quintessential revenge film,
there is little blood to be found in “The
Paper Tigers.” Instead, Tran Quoc Bao
switches out the gore and swords for more
family-friendly fare that focuses on relationship
drama and juvenile jokes about
aging, weight gain and bodily noises. It’s a
bit different from what we have become
accustomed to in this genre, but it works
and works well.
With its deviation from the norm and its
lack of a body count after the initial killing
(though it does not lack action and some
violence), “The Papers Tigers” will likely
not gel with hardcore fans of this genre.
But I think, if you’re willing to give something
new a chance, you won’t be disappointed
with this little gem of a film.
“The Paper Tigers” is in select theaters
but streaming nationally on demand.
The National Trade Association
purchased the following
classifieds. Determining
the value of their service
or product is advised by
this publication. In order
to avoid misunderstandings,
some advertisers do
not offer “employment”
but rather supply the
readers with manuals, directories
and other materials
designed to help
their clients establish mail
order selling and other
businesses at home. Under
NO circumstance
should you send any
money in advance or give
the client your checking,
license ID or credit card
numbers. Also beware of
ads that claim to guarantee
loans regardless of
credit and note that if a
credit repair company
does business only over
the phone it’s illegal to request
any money before
delivering its service. All
funds are based in US
dollars. Toll Free numbers
may or may not
