Kootenay Lake Angler Incentive

Program: Fishing to Conserve

B.C.’s Heritage

Get your rainbow and bull

heads into your local depot

May 31 marks the end of the

highly successful Kootenay

Lake Angler Incentive Program.

In June there will be a

grand prize draw, valued at

over $50,000 and the $1,000

monthly prize.

Since its launch in June 2020,

the program has been a great

conservation and economic

success, encouraging anglers

to harvest rainbow and bull

trout in Kootenay Lake, greatly

helping kokanee salmon survival

while supporting fishers

and local businesses.

The program has also

inspired renewed interest

in the outdoors. As Randy

Zilonka, owner of Gill & Gifts

Depot, said: “We are seeing

a new interest in fishing and

after seven years of declining

sales, we are seeing an

increase. We can attribute a lot

of this to the program.”

The initiative is managed

by the local West Arm Outdoors

Club with support

from the B.C. Wildlife Federation,

Freshwater Fisheries

Society of BC, Habitat Conservation

Trust Foundation,

Ministry of Forests, Lands,

Natural Resource Operations

and Rural Development

(FLNORD), Jones Boys Boats

of Woodbury Creek and local

merchants.

Communities and businesses throughout

the Southern Interior are receiving

new support for much needed economic

recovery. The Economic Trust of the

Southern Interior (ETSI-BC) announced

the successful funding recipients of the

Rural Business and Community Recovery

(RBCR) Program. The Kaslo Board

of Trade o/a Kaslo and Area Chamber

of Commerce received funding to hire

one Recovery Advisor position for a sixmonth

term.

“We were excited with the interest

shown by communities and business

support organizations throughout the

Southern Interior to hire Recovery Advisors

through this funding,” said Laurel

Douglas, CEO of ETSI-BC.

After careful consideration, the

ETSI-BC adjudication team selected 20

successful applicants whose projects will

create a total of 30 part-time and fulltime

Recovery Advisor positions to assist

businesses and rural communities in the

Kaslo Board Of Trade gets funding for Recovery Advisor position

Commerce is receiving a grant of

$37,500.00 which will be used to launch

our newly adopted Community Economic

Development Strategy! This post-

COVID economic development strategy

has been designed to take a ‘boots on the

ground’ approach to economic recovery.

This strategy is all about ‘coordinated

leadership’ and sets out different but

complementary roles for the Kaslo and

Area D Economic Development Commission

and the Kaslo and Area Chamber

of Commerce. The Chamber is perfectly

positioned to be a conduit for resources

and solutions to the businesses and communities

in our area and is excited about

this new capacity

to develop

and deliver these

solutions.

The Kaslo and

Area Chamber

of Commerce

would like to

thank ETSI-BC

and the Province

of British Columbia

for providing

To participate:

this much needed funding. This funding

made available through the RBCR grant

will make it possible for the Chamber to

build a solid foundation in the first six

months of this exciting three-year strategy.

“We are looking forward to putting

these funds to work,” said Jeff Davie,

Treasurer of the Kaslo and Area Chamber

of Commerce. “We are very pleased

to announce that Pat Desmeules has been

contracted to fulfill the role of Recovery

Advisor. We are confident that her enthusiasm,

dedication, hard work and team

spirit will ensure the successful rollout of

the strategy.”

Play it safe around our reservoirs

Play it safe when boating or swimming this summer. Our reservoirs can be enjoyable recreation destinations,

provided certain common sense safety precautions are observed.

Because the water in our reservoirs is utilized for flood control and the production of electricity, reservoir

water levels can rise or fall daily. Reservoir users should be aware that changing water levels can conceal

submerged hazards, particularly in shallow water near the shoreline. It is important that visitors be aware of

these potential dangers and take precautions to stay safe. Canadian Hydrographic Charts are an excellent

reference for boaters and are available at charts.gc.ca

Boating, fishing and swimming above or below a dam or generating station can be very dangerous. For your

own safety and the safety of those with you, obey all warning signs and stay out of restricted areas.

Boaters must comply with all Canadian Coast Guard regulations and practice safe boating at all times.

Have fun but be careful!

Calling all Canadian writers

Page Turner Awards is

inviting Canadian writers to

and get involved in the

Page Turner Awards 2021. The

Canadian writing community,

with their variety of unique

life experiences, have some

excellent and fascinating stories

and advice to share. Page

Turner Awards would love

to see these cultural stories,

memoirs, true life stories and

non-fiction books with Canadian

themes.

The Page Turner Awards is

an inclusive writing and book

awards with one goal to

change the lives of as many

writers as possible. The team

at Page Turner Awards passionately

believes that talented

writers can be from any background,

age, race, religion, or

interest. There are talented

undiscovered writers in the

global writing community

with undiscovered literary

gems. Whether you have a

non-fiction ‘how to’ guide, a

tear-jerking memoir, a scandalous

family drama, or the

next-big-thing comedy, Page

Turner Awards can’t wait to

pass your story to their panel

of influential literary judges,

publishers and film producers.

If you’ve already written a

film script, a television series,

a manuscript or published a

book and would like to reach a

wider audience, you may want

to enter for the possibility of

winning a publishing deal,

audiobook production or film

rights option.

The inaugural Page Turner

Awards was a huge success

The Page Turner Awards

gives writers and authors

the chance to enter unpublished

or published fiction

and non-fiction books, to be

read by a carefully curated

judging panel made up of

influential players in the publishing

industry. Prizes span

everything from mentorships

may also get their film

script optioned.

Founder of Page Turner

Awards and award-winning

novelist, Paula Wynne said:

“There are writers from all

walks of life, from manual

labourers to academics, all

with stories to tell, and most

of them heart-warming and

moving. We’re proud that our

awards celebrate excellent

writing and helps writers and

authors to get their stories

discovered.”

During the pandemic writers

have been spending more

time creating the stories they

always dreamed they would

tell. Page Turner Awards ran

a survey of their writers and

surprise findings showed

to write more since the pandemic

started. Submissions

David Michael Amaral

September 29, 1949 - May 3, 2021

David passed away peacefully at

Jubilee Manor holding hands with

his beloved wife & life long partner

Liz Amaral following a long journey

with Fronto-temporal Dementia

and Cancer.

Family came first for David and Liz.

They were a powerful parenting duo

creating a safe and vibrant space

for their children to thrive. Papa to

his kids and grandkids, David was

always ready to play and teach. He

made a game out of building rock

walls and fences on the farm. Though

he wasn’t as convincing with other

chores! He loved to laugh and would

share many a groaner, the precursor

to today's Dad jokes. Papa will be

remembered for his bear hugs and

kind, encouraging words. He gave

us our roots and our wings.

David has been an active member of

the Nelson community for 49+ years.

He was involved in the community

co-op, environmental committees,

church work and social justice.

David was an avid cyclist. He rode

his bike to work, even

in the winter, before

bike commuting was

cool. He will be remembered

fondly by those he nursed and

worked alongside at KLH. He shared

his love of music as a drummer with

Second Wind and the house band

for Mountain Lakes Assisted Living.

He enjoyed many forms of art

- painting, drawing and had carved

a jade heart for each member of his

family.

David is survived by his wife of 50

years, Liz, their 3 children Marcia

(Kurt Gervais), Naomi (Cory Crowe),

and Joe (Jayme Amaral) and 4 grandchildren;

Hayley, Brenna, Penelope &

Sophia and his brother Anthony and

nieces and nephews. He was predeceased

by parents Manuel and Dorothy

and his brothers Dennis, Michael

and Craig.

In keeping with the current COVID-19

situation, a small family funeral has

been held. Thank-you to the outstanding

Nurses and Caregivers at

Jubilee Manor and Mountain Lakes

for the grace and compassion they

showed our much loved Papa in his

stay with them. We have a deep appreciation

for Dr. Kirsten & Dr. Janz

for their excellent medical care and

attention.

The family also thanks David’s many

friends for their messages and notes

of support. In lieu of flowers, please

consider a donation to KLH.

Be still and know that I am God.

Starting on Monday, May 17, 2021 until the middle of June, the

During the flushing

process, chlorinated

areas from the Water

SUDOKU

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken

down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the

numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and

box. Each number can appear only once in each row,

column and box. You can figure out the order in which

the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues

already provided in the boxes. The more numbers

you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
