GIFTED: Halswell Project chairwoman Chrys Horn out the front of the community hub.
IT’S OFFICIAL – the former
Halswell Library building is
here to stay, but this time, it
will be in the hands of the
community.
Instead of selling it, the
city council unanimously
voted last week to retain the
building now known as the
Halswell Community Hub,
to gift to the Halswell Community
Project.
The organisation was
already in charge of activities
at the Hub for the last two
years, but it was not a place
they could definitively call
their own.
Now that a ground lease
has been granted, the responsibility
of maintaining
the building will be up to the
project.
“We’re very pleased because
we’ve been working towards
it for quite some time,” said
Halswell Project chairwoman
Chrys Horn.
Megan
“It gives us certainty about
being able to rent the building
out to other groups.”
The donation also gives the
group some certainty about
how it will run its own activities
in the future, including
school holiday programmes,
art, music, games and social
groups.
The Hub is a place where
people can make connections,
with spaces available
for hire, including a large
for 18 months. The city
council did not know what
Tucked away down a back section, this permanent material gem is waiting for a new owner.
Fully renovated in 2016 (following EQC work) all the hard work has been done by the current vendors:
simply move in, and enjoy!
The north facing open plan living/dining area includes a high quality modern kitchen. Top shelf
appliances and a gas range will satisfy the most uncompromising chef. The dining area opens out
to a large hardwood deck with integrated seating and storage. Easy care gardens and raised veggie
beds complete the package.
Two double bedrooms are complemented by a study which could easily be a third bedroom. The
master bedroom features a large walk-in wardrobe and a full ensuite with an expansive tiled shower.
Three heat pumps and double glazing on the south side ensure you will be cosy in the cooler months.
An internal access garage easily accommodates a large car plus several bikes, and doubles as a
hobby space. With its proximity to both the City Centre and the Port Hills, this area’s popularity is
well deserved. Only a few minutes’ walk from the very popular St Martins shopping centre, public
transport, and buzzing cafés, this home is also zoned for St Martins’ School and Cashmere High
School.
If you’re looking for a quiet and convenient corner of St Martins, look no further. Our owners have
already bought so this property must be sold.
Merrin School’s rebuild
starts after three-year wait
• By Bea Gooding
THE DELAY is over for the
community at Merrin School,
which has been waiting more
than three years to see their
facilities rebuilt.
The school’s $5 million
redevelopment project was
meant to start in early 2018
and be completed by 2019, but
contractors were not able to start
until this week.
The work is part of the
Ministry of Education’s
Christchurch Schools Rebuild
programme, where 115
earthquake-affected schools will
either be rebuilt or refurbished.
Principal Lisa Dillon-Roberts
said there had been delays with
the entire project and that the
setbacks were frustrating.
“It’s behind due to delays with
the project contractors,” she said.
“But we will be very happy to
have new facilities soon.”
Finding the middle ground
between a good school design
that is fit for purpose within the
budget that MOE was prepared
to allocate was also a challenge.
The school has not seen any
considerable building work in
REBUILD: Merrin School’s redevelopment project is under way.
decades so the project was welcomed,
but it did not mean it was
using facilities that were unsafe.
By the end of next year, Merrin
School will have a new hall and
a block with five teaching spaces,
and all other buildings will either

be demolished or refurbished.
The Government has invested
$1.3 billion to rebuild, restore,
and renew schools across the city
in a 10-year programme.
It includes flexible teaching
spaces with the potential to
PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
be expanded or reduced, and
energy-efficient buildings with
the latest technology.
Although half of the redevelopments
are now finished, the
whole programme was meant to
be completed by 2023.
Hearings for the city council’s
2021-2031 Long Term Plan
are currently under way, which
it plans to adopt in June.
Halswell Ward councillor
Anne Galloway told councillors
at last week’s meeting that
there has been a strong theme
of communities wanting to
partner with the city council to
“get things done,” through LTP
submissions.
The decision to approve the
gifting of the former library to
the community project was a
“fine example of that,” which
is something the Halswell-
Hornby-Riccarton Community
Board has been a staunch advocate
for.
“I’m delighted, it’s a fantastic
outcome for the community,
and for the council as well,”
said Cr Galloway.
“It’s to acknowledge that
these people are doing a great
job and we should strengthen
and applaud that.”
Having community groups
take responsibility of facilities
was a model the city council
wanted to grow.
Garage operation no longer viable for charity
• By Bea Gooding
A CHARITY that has supplied
hundreds of emergency baby
supplies for vulnerable families
needs a new home, and it will
take a village to get there.
It Takes a Village Canterbury
currently operates out of the
garages of two volunteers, but it’s
no longer safe or realistic to do
so, given they live more than 30
minutes apart.
Keeping up with increasing
demand – while clambering
over towers of donated clothing,
toys, feeding and bathing items,
nappies, linen and high chairs –
produced issues only a dedicated,
permanent facility could fix.
“It’s getting to the point now
where it’s becoming unsafe. We
both have families, and the kids
climb all over this stuff in the
garage,” said Jess Roberts, who is
in charge of the toddler bundles.
“We need a proper place where
people can donate items to,
where we can store, pack and
distribute bundles.”
The Canterbury-based charity
donates free baby and toddler
bundles to families who may not
be able to afford basic items for
their children.
The charity sources the items
from others through a number of
pay-it-forward Facebook groups
started by the charity in 2016.
When the groups collectively
CROWDED: It Takes a Village Canterbury bundle managers Jess Roberts (left) and Danielle
Petterd need a new place to prepare emergency baby supplies from.
PHOTO: BEA GOODING
grew to more than 10,000
members, It Takes A Village
Canterbury was established in
2017 as a way to share resources
to where it was most needed.
Now consisting of more than
20,000 members who regularly
pay it forward, the small team of
volunteers are struggling to keep
up with the mammoth task of
sorting through donations.
Donations were currently
being sorted and stored at the
homes of bundle managers
Danielle Petterd and Roberts,
who have to travel back and forth
from Kaiapoi and Southshore.
But as the amount of donations
continues to grow, so does
the demand for the families
receiving them.
Since 2019, the charity has
put together no more than 200
bundles a year on average.
In the wake of Covid-19,
demand increased significantly
in the last 12 months.
“It’s just getting bigger because
more and more people need help,
especially because of Covid-19,”
Roberts said.
“We’ve already made 70 [bundles]
this year, but by the end of
the year, I think it’ll be 700.
“We do this in our spare
time, and this is taking over our
spare time now. It’s very clearly
become full-time, but I can’t
make 27 bundles a month, work
full-time and be a mum.”
Needing a permanent facility
did not mean the charity wanted
to build a new one from scratch.
In line with its ethos on
sustainability, where it prevents
thousands of items from making
their way to landfill, an existing
building was all that was needed,
like an old doctor’s office.
More than $27,000 was needed
through its Givealittle fundraiser
to go towards rent, operational
costs, and the ability to hold
workshops.
Said Roberts: “Part of our
ethos is sustainability, and there
are enough empty places in
Christchurch. If we had a dedicated
space, then we could look
at the option of a delivery service
as a lot of people don’t drive.
“We’re also looking for some
space available to run classes to
help these families, like how to
reduce your food bill and still
enjoy it – where you can help
yourself, but you need someone
to show you how.”
Rotary club funds contribute to new centre
FROM OPENING a new wing
at a drug rehabilitation centre to
the recent success of a mammoth
book fair, the Rotary Club of
Bishopdale-Burnside has been
busy.
For more than 30 years, Odyssey
House has been involved in
the rehabilitation of drug and
alcohol offenders. Until recently,
the Burnside facility only housed
men.
Following a $12,000 donation
raised by the rotary club, the
facility can now host women
formerly housed at a Motukarara
retreat through the construction
of a separate, eight-room block.
The block was proposed as
earthquake damage repairs
proved too costly to make
changes to the existing Greers
Rd facility.
It is designed to enable
women to move on from the
rehabilitation programme,
AN ORGANISATION in
Halswell that helps combat
the isolation many older men
experience when they retire has
partnered with a hospital to
support those with disabilities.
The Halswell Menzshed group
operates from the St John of God
Hospital, a place where adults
with physical and neurological
impairments receive residential
and respite support.
This influenced the Menzshed
to collaborate with the hospital
to create a ‘tiny home’ for men
with disabilities, or men in
transition from redundancy,
bereavement, ill-health and
rehabilitation.
Said Virginia Spoors, St John
of God Hauora Trust health
and ability services regional
manager: “The project will help
provide a model which offers
more choices for people living
with a disability in their aims to
live with independence in a community
setting.
“The value of this increased interaction
for residents is immeasurable
in terms of self-esteem,
HOME: Rotary Club of Bishopdale-Burnside chairman David Conroy (left) hands a $12,000
donation to Odyssey House clinical director Nigel Loughton towards a new facility for
women seeking drug and alcohol rehabilitation.
offers opportunities for further
education or to take part in a
work environment.
This enables them to achieve
a reintroduction to society and
a much-reduced risk of reoffending.
Said Foundation chairman
David Conroy: “Bishopdale-
Burnside Rotary, thanks to funds
Tiny home collaboration builds self-esteem
CONNECTION: After the Halswell Menzshed built this fruit
and vegetable tunnel for the St John of God Hauora Trust
hospital, a partnership was formed to further support men
with disabilities or in transition.
feeling connected, and being able
to have adult conversations with
people that are not paid participants
in their care.”
The Menzshed offers a safe,
raised from major fundraising
activities, were in a position
to provide a sizeable donation
toward the building project and
also identified an additional
need to furnish each bedroom.
“To this end, we set about
encouraging seven other rotary
clubs to contribute to the joint
venture project.”
welcoming place for men to
put their skills to work towards
community and personal DIY
projects, fostering new friendships
as a result.
The building is now up
and running with the first
few women in residence All
bedrooms have a plaque
recognising each Rotary club’s
part in the project.
Meanwhile, it has been back
to business for the club’s annual
Bookarama event, which was
recently met with success.
Manager Roger Spicer said
partnering with the community
is an integral part of the group.
The hospital already provided
the facility they worked from,
while the Menzshed does work
for them in return.
In 2015, the shed built a tunnel
house that housed fresh fruit
and vegetables to the hospital’s
kitchen for residents to enjoy.
Spicer said that some shed attendees
are facing trauma or life
transitions.
Social isolation and loneliness
are recognised as major issues
in New Zealand as the country’s
population continues to get
older.
“We’re involved with the whole
man; the spiritual, the mental,
the physical. Guys need a place
where they can make friends and
talk about some of their problems,”
he said.
Statistics from the Ageing Well
National Science Challenge show
about 10 per cent of people over
65 feel lonely most of the time.
For some, coming along to
Menzshed is all they need – a
The event enables book lovers
to browse through thousands
of titles donated to the club,
with each purchase going towards
youth, school or charity
projects.
With the cancellation of last
year’s event due to Covid-19, this
year’s one saw more shoppers
and donations than the club has
ever seen in 15 years.
Said Keith Walker, of the rotary
club: “Maybe lockdown meant
people saved their books for the
project; cleaned out cupboards
and shelves of unused books, or
maybe they just spent more time
reading while confined to home.
“It was wonderful to see
families enjoying the atmosphere
and buzz that is Bookarama
and to see children head off
home with just as many books
as the grown-ups to keep them
occupied over the coming
months.”
place to enjoy a hobby and some
company at the same time.
For others, it is a companionable
place to learn new skills that
can help them take the next step
into paid work.
The Menzshed also helps out
on projects for schools and notfor-profit
organisations.
The lower-cost labour options
provided by Menzshed meant
the jobs get done, rather than
being put to the side and seen as
unaffordable.
This would not be possible
without the crucial funding from
the Rātā Foundation.
Said foundation chief executive
Leighton Evans: “We recognise
social connections can help reduce
isolation and build resilient
communities by providing opportunities
for people to interact,
form relationships and share
experiences.”
YALDHURST HEALTH
22 SIR JOHN MCKENZIE DRIVE, YALDHURST
Yaldhurst Health welcomes the community
Yaldhurst Health
opened in January
and has been enjoying
getting to know
their neighbours.
The clinic is home
to Inspire Health
Medical Practice,
Kiwi Pharmacy,
Yaldhurst Dental,
Racecourse Physiotherapy
Clinic,
Inspire Acupuncture, Gudchi Feet Podiatry,
Beyoutiful Aesthetic Clinic, and the
Inspire Café.
At Inspire Health their clinic vision and
mission is to promote healing by creating
better health through compassion, trust,
and cooperation.
“People need compassion for healing
to take place. As humans, we all need to
remind ourselves of the child in every
one of us. Every child needs compassion
which allows us to connect with one
another. It is all about relationship,” says
Doctor Eugene Sia.
“Compassion is bilateral and represents
giving and receiving which is constantly
changing. Every relationship requires
trust for it to work. The higher a person
trusts, the stronger the
effect of their healing. It
is reciprocal and thus the
cooperation of both parties
is essential.”
The healthcare providers
focus is to work collaboratively
with their clients to
motivate and inspire them
to seek health and wellbeing,
not just avoid dis-ease.
They are a primary care
provider whose biggest
goal is to prevent major illnesses.
Their doctors, nurses
and clinicians thrive on
their passion to serve,
improve, inspire, and
empower individuals to
live their best quality of
life possible.
“We are so pleased
to have re-located in
January to this location.
We are passionate
about health and being
able to serve our community
is why we get up
in the morning each day.
As the World
Health Organization
states,
health is a state
of complete
mental, social,
and physical
well-being, not
merely the absence
of disease
or infirmity.
This is our goal
for everyone.”
WESTERN NEWS
Keep cosy with
RD Petroleum
this winter
Pick up some pork and
try something different
Pork is often
considered a treat,
but there are many
ways to present this
versatile meat
Sirloin roast pork
with stuffed baked
apples
Ingredients
Serves 3-4
500g trim pork sirloin
roast or mini roast
1 tbsp olive oil
Salt and pepper to taste
4 small apples
3/4 cup fresh breadcrumbs
2 tbsp finely chopped sage
leaves
1 shallot, diced
1tsp crushed garlic
2 tbsp table spread
Directions
Preheat oven to 200 deg C.
If using a traditional
roast, brush it with oil
then season with salt and
pepper.
Core apples with an apple
corer. Using tip of a sharp
knife, cut through skin
around the circumference
of each apple.
Combine breadcrumbs,
sage, garlic, salt, pepper and
shallot. Mix in 1 tablespoon
of spread. Stuff apples with
this mixture.
Dot tops with remaining
tablespread.
Place in a roasting pan
with pork. Cook roast
for 35min according to
packet instructions. Cook
traditional roast for 10
minutes at 200 deg C.
Reduce heat to 160 deg C,
and continue cooking for
35-40min.
Cover and rest roast for
10min before carving.
Remove apples once soft
and cooked. Keep warm.
Great served with a kumara
mash and steamed green
beans.
Pork sirloin and stuffed apples are a good
combination for the dinner table.
Mustard and
pomegranate BBQ
pork
Serves 4
Ingredients
500gm pork steaks
1 tbsp wholegrain
mustard
¼ cup pomegranate glaze
1 tsp Chinese five-spice
Directions
Cut steaks into four portions.
Combine mustard,
pomegranate glaze and five
spice.
Brush over cutlets. Cover
and refrigerate for 30min.
Preheat a barbecue or grill.
Remove steaks from fridge,
scraping off any excess
marinade. Grill on mediumhigh
for about 8-10 minutes
depending on thickness,
turning often.
Brush with reserved glaze
near the end of cooking.
Great served with risotto or
creamy polenta.
Schnitzel with Asian
flavours
Serves 4
Ingredients
300-400gm pork schnitzel
½ cup flour
Flaky sea salt and freshly
ground black pepper to
taste
1 large egg
2 tbsp coconut milk or
plain milk
1 cup dried breadcrumbs
3 kaffir lime leaves,
deveined and finely
chopped
2 tbsp each: chopped
coriander leaves, mint
2-3 tbsp rice bran oil
Directions
If necessary, pound
schnitzels with a rolling pin
until thin.
Combine flour, salt and
pepper in a shallow dish.
Whisk egg and coconut
milk or milk in another
shallow bowl.
Place breadcrumbs, kaffir
lime leaves and chopped
herbs in a third shallow
dish.
Coat schnitzels with flour,
dip in beaten egg, then coat
with crumb mixture. Chill
for 5min.
Heat oil in a large,
non-stick frying pan on
medium.
Add schnitzels. Cook
for 1-2 minutes each
side, until golden. Serve
immediately.
RD Petroleum (RDP) is a familiar sight
for farm and rural residents around the
Canterbury region, however now days urban
residents also enjoy the same excellent
customer service for which RDP is known for
in rural communities, through their home
heating diesel.
RDP began its home heating diesel delivery
service to the lower South Island’s main urban
centres of Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin
and Invercargill a number of years ago.
Customer demand has continued to increase
year upon year, and RDP has responded
with specialised improvements to its delivery
equipment.
The trucks that deliver RDP’s home heating
diesel in each urban centre are drawn from
the company’s extensive vehicle fleet. This
means they have the latest communication
and GPS tracking technology on board, so
the operations team always know where they
are and how far away they are from their next
delivery stop.
RDP’s home heating diesel trucks come
equipped with a specially-designed hose,
through which the diesel is pumped from
the truck into house tanks. The length of
the hose allows the trucks to access tanks
without having to enter the property, avoiding
damaging the driveway. RDP is the place to
go if you require diesel conveniently delivered
to your home and as a loyal RDP customer
you’re offered discounted pricing and can
become eligible for value-added benefits.
For all enquiries please phone
0800 44 00 14, or visit the RDP website at
HOME & HEATING
Get the balance
right this winter
Enviro Master has been helping
Cantabrians get the balance right when it
comes to choosing the perfect heat pump or
air conditioning system for their home or
office since 2002.
Their team of expert sales people, qualified
electricians, heating and refrigeration
engineers, help to supply and install
Christchurch’s widest range of heat pumps,
and because they have no affiliation with any
one brand, you can be assured their advice
on the benefits and differences between each
product is unbiased.
They will recommend the most energyefficient
and cost-effective system for your
individual situation, and will have you
regulating the heat in your home or office in
no time.
Nowadays, customers are often wanting
whole home solutions to be able to maintain
even temperatures throughout the home both
in Winter and Summer. This can be achieved
by using ducted systems or multi systems
and Enviro Master are experts in designing,
installing and commissioning these systems.
Help is currently available with a
government subsidy covering 90 per cent of
the cost of a new heat pump up to $3000.
The subsidy is part of the Warmer Kiwi
Homes initiative and is available to Home
owner/occupiers with a Community Services
Card, a SuperGold combo card or who live in
a low-income area as determined by deciles
8-10 on the New Zealand Deprivation Index.
The applicant’s home must also have been
built before 2008, have insulation up to code
(insulation subsidies also available) and have
no fixed heating in a living area, such as an
existing operational heat pump or fireplace.
With new regulations coming in for
Landlords to provide heating in rentals,
now is a great time to beat the deadline.
Inadequate heating and ventilation can lead
to mould growth and dampness in your
property, leading to costlier maintenance
and an unhealthy living environment.
Providing a fixed heater with a higher heat
output and lower running costs, like a heat
pump, will enable your tenants to heat the
area effectively. Enviro Master are well
experienced with the Tenancy Services
software to ensure that you are meeting your
requirements.
To ensure you choose the right system for
your home or business, one of Enviro Master’s
experts will visit to assess your individual
situation, offer advice and answer any
questions you may have. This consultation
is at no cost to the customer and is always
provided before a heat pump is installed.
Anyone wondering about their eligibility
for a subsidised heat pump are welcome to
get in touch for details and help with the
application process. To find out more, call
Enviro Master on (03) 366 0525 or visit
their website www.enviromaster.co.nz.
Bathroom ventilation
The extraction of air from the bathroom
should be a priority for all houses and
commercial buildings.
Bathrooms can generate a large quantity
of steam and odours. It is important
this compromised air does not circulate
around the house.
Bathroom odours can be unpleasant,
especially when near living, sleeping or
working areas.
The moisture generated by showers and
baths can be damaging to your home and
furnishings and be a major contribution
to condensation. Damp houses are not a
healthy environment for anyone to live in,
especially for children or other vulnerable
people.
By extracting air from the bathroom to
outside, warmer air from inside the house
will move in to the bathroom. Whereas
opening a window can draw cold air
into the bathroom and blow the smelly,
moisture laden
bathroom air into
the house.
Modern houses
are built to be
very airtight and
require mechanical
ventilation such
as extraction fans
or heat exchanger
systems. Although
older houses can
be draughty, the air
often flows in the
wrong direction.
Therefore, they also
usually require mechanical ventilation to
keep the air quality higher.
The quality of the air we breathe affects
our health and ability to perform. We
breathe in and out approximately 20,000
litres of air every day. It is therefore very
important to ensure good air quality
indoors through adequate ventilation.
To ensure the quality of your air, contact
the experts. Smooth-Air Products can
calculate the required extraction for your
bathrooms, and look into air exchange for
your whole building. Smooth-Air offers a
wide range of ventilation equipment, from
air vents to ducting for fans, for both the
commercial and domestic markets.
They have an extensive range of
fans and ventilation components
in-store but they can also provide
innovative solutions tailored to differing
requirements. You can contact Smooth-
Air on 0800 SMOOTH (0800 766684).
SERVICED APARTMENT LIVING
Independence with support
you can count on
Enjoy the good life
Serviced apartments are in the heart of the village, with
easy access to everything the village has to offer.
Many residents say that living in a serviced apartment
takes the stress out of daily life.
We take care of your housekeeping, and you can choose
a home-cooked main meal every day from our Delicious
menu, as well as morning and afternoon tea, in the dining
room. Other services are available, too.
We can help you find the mix of care options that suit
you. That’s the beauty of serviced apartments.
Your apartment is your home
You can make your apartment your own with your
favourite furniture, art, and ornaments. You’ll have
a kitchenette with a fridge-freezer and microwave,
and a private ensuite. A patio provides space for
you to grow flowers and herbs.
The call bells mean help is always there, as they
are monitored 24 hours a day by on-site staff.
You can also receive resthome-level care in the
comfort of your serviced apartment.
