HISTORy of the building
An old tobacco auction house transformed into
a modern, industrial theatre and event location,
with a high focus on detail and multifunctionality.
TOBACCO offers a robust theatre hall, with nine
other, varying spaces surrounding it.
It’s an experience in itself!
Beautiful piece of history
The name Nes shows the area used to consist
of swampy land. Only 6 centuries ago, the only
thing you would see here were a couple of
sheep and geese, on a small piece of swamp,
which was called a ‘nesse’ in old Dutch.
The current street the Nes was created in 1342,
when it became a part of Amsterdam. In the
following centuries, the Nes would develop into
an area consisting of shops and companies. And
where there is business, cafés will undeniably
follow. In addition to brothels, you could find
café-chantants, cabaret, the Salon des Variétés,
Tivoli and artist cafés.
Until the 1930’s, one of the first and only gay
cafes was located in the Nes: The Empire. In
1824 coffeehouse Frascati even opened a salon
with fountains, trees and a capacity of around
1500 people. Around 1900, however, the Nes
degraded and was avoided by the elite. Where
pleasure once ruled, the tobacco industry
emerged, resulting in the street seeming
deserted in the evening. The Nes changed from
a ‘street of fun’ to a trade centre for tobacco. It
was even called “the Hell”: Hundreds of people
were falling over each other and were not afraid
to stand on balcony rims or climb over chairs
and tables to get to the best tobacco leaves.
It would still take a couple of decennia, but slowly
the pleasure and variété came back to the Nes.
Eventually, theatres were able to restore the street
in all its glory, among which Frascati, De Brakke
Grond and also TOBACCO Theater.
INTRODUCTIon
An impressive theater in the cultural main street of Amsterdam. Industrial, fresh, romantic, cool, and the love for
detail. History is visible everywhere. The eight meter high walls are remarkable for the TOBACCO Theater.
An independent theater where cultural performances from the rental of business events are produced. That is
why we are just that little bit different. Our flexibility in programming gives us the freedom to capture the shining
gems from the turbulent pond of the cultural offer.
the THEATERhall
350
Surface: 200 m²
An imposing, rich hall, built high up from robust
plaster with a steel bar and balcony. You can feel
the fresh, modern, cool and the love for detail in
every fiber of your body. Due to the historic shed
roofs, a beautiful northern light enters the room
with the possibility of darkening.
TOBACCO Theater has a unique lighting system in
which the hall can adapt itself into many guises in
no time. With a height of no less than 8.5 meters
and a floor area of 200 m2, the Theater Hall is the
stage for striking theater productions and loving
performances.
SETUPS
max. 350
Standard surface: Cabaret (140 visitors)
We are a theater with the appearance of a 1920s theater
club with a flat stage that could have walked straight out
of New York’s Meat District.
At the TOBACCO Theater, guests get their own table with
candlelight, nuts, and the possibility to drink a glass of
wine. A 6x3 stage in combination with a cabaret setup is
our fixed layout. However, other setups are also possible!
BALcONy & LOGE
Surface: 45 m²
Above the robust bar in The Theaterhall is the steel balcony
located over the entire width. This viewing point is in direct
connection with the box behind and has direct contact with
The Theaterhalll.
This is therefore a popular place for vip guests of your own
organization during performances.
All this under the watchful eye of the graffiti artwork “The
Cuban Lady” that is a remarkable eye-catcher in The Lodge.
the FOYER
max.
40
Surface: 40 m²
The Foyer is a creation of the internationally
renowned interior designer Wim van de Oude
Wetering. He created a relaxing and attractive
layback with a direct view of the Nes. A leather
double chesterfield, an antique piano, and a work
of art by the Amsterdam painter Van Donkersloot
gives this space the character of an old English
gentlemen’s society. The Foyer can be used as a
wardrobe, exhibition space or for a small drink.
the bank secret
max.
40
Surface: 40 m²
A bank vault that has not been opened for
decades, is the big eye-catcher in this beautiful
golden art-deco space. Here TOBACCO Theater
exhibits two works by court photographer Erwin
Olaf (Blonde Sien and Separation 4).
The Bank Secret has a direct view of the cultural
main street of Amsterdam. This space is very
suitable as a wardrobe or exhibition space. Our
Ticket Desk and Studio are directly connected to
The Bank Secret
the STUDIO
max.
80
Surface: 75 m²
A pearly white space with cleanly carved walls, an
artistic chandelier made of fluorescent tubes and
a sloping glass roof at a height of no less than 9
meters. The showpiece of this space is without a
doubt the famous photo of Michael Jackson on the
Lauriersgracht (1977) by Claude Vanheye.
The Studio is suitable as an artist room with direct
access to backstage. Would you like to read the
last details in peace and quiet? Then take the
internal stairs to The Library on the first floor.
11

the library
max. 20
Surface: 25 m²
Unfortunately, many libraries have had to close
their doors with the rise of e-books.
But still ... with their silence policy and the rustling
of paper, they keep their romantic charm. No
digital environment can compete with that. Based
on this line of thought, our authentic library in
the TOBACCO Theater has been restored. The
space is 25m2 and suitable as an artist room for 20
people. The hall can be reached via an entrance
from The Studio.
Sssttttt …….!
the dressing rooms
max. 3 per cloackroom
Surface: 45 m²
TOBACCO Theater has two very spacious dressing
rooms with a private shower, toilet, and a direct
backstage route to the stage. From the entrance
to the changing rooms, you walk along The Wall of
Fame. Experience the rich glory of the TOBACCO
Theater ...
The Bali is located right next to the main
entrance. This is the place to be for tickets.
The central place where visitors can scan their
ticket(s).
At the TOBACCO Theater, we have 11 small
rooms, all designed with a cultural nod to
theater life. In these rooms too, there is even
an eye for detail and let yourself be inspired
by the artistic and environmentally conscious
toilet rolls of “The Gool Roll”. For the disabled
visitors, we have a special toilet with the
corresponding access on the ground floor.
Our chef
With Dennis Huwaë, TOBACCO Theater has an
absolute top chef!
The kitchen is located in the catacombs of
our theater. From here our Michelin chef,
Dennis Huwaë, provides a fantastic dinner
together with his team. Dennis Huwaë is the
owner and chef of Restaurant Daalder, with
which he achieved a Michelin star in 2021, and
the driving force behind the kitchen team of
TOBACCO Theater. We are so proud of our
absolute top chef!
Chef Jasper is Dennis’s right-hand man and
is at the helm of the TOBACCO kitchen. For
Huwaë, creating a dish is a quest for the
perfect combination of ingredients. He does
magic with it and lets the ingredients reinforce
and complement each other. He gets his
inspiration from street food from all over the
world.
Looking for the optimal experience? Then give
your performance an extra touch by adding
a dinner before or during the performance.
We are happy to help you out and create the
perfect experience!
foundation ‘stel je voor’
Our foundation: “Stel je voor” has the mission: to give young, talented artists an opportunity to present themselves
and their work to a larger audience. This can be in the form of theater, photography, fashion, art, media, and other
art forms. We consciously deploy broadly in this. It makes our search exciting and gives unexpected art forms a
great opportunity to display themselves on a large stage in the heart of Amsterdam.
