we have yet another interesting and useful

The Syke Walk and Talk Group feature

another great local walk on pages 30-31.

Last month the group benefitted from

some new members joining due to the

article in the magazine. With restrictions

now being lifted this is a great way to

enjoy your local area, get fit and meet new

people. Another great way to keep active

and meet new people, whilst also helping

to make the local area nice for all to enjoy,

is by joining the Whitworth In Bloom team.

Syke Walk & Talk Group

SHORE AND WATERGROVE

Although some restrictions are still

essential the weather is improving

and what better way to rid the lock

down blues than a 6 mile walk to

Shore via Rydings Dam.

Setting off from Syke Chapel up the road

northward for a short distance where you

find two paths on your right, you take the

left fork with a metal gate. Follow this path

through a copse and another metal gate

until you come to a style and a stream which

you cross by the steppingstones or a narrow

plank.

Continue on this path which passes through

the fields and over several styles finally

taking you up a steep bank, over another

style and on to Rydings Road. Cross the

road bearing left and descend the steps to

Rydings Dam. Follow the path in front of you

with the reservoir to your right. Eventually

the path takes you through a gate, across

a brook and on to Lawflat which leads to

Wardle road.

Cross the road and continue along a

surfaced path turning left into Elm Grove.

Adjacent to number 13 Elm Grove take the

path between the houses and then bear left

and on to Birch road. Turn right and at the

next junction turn left into Westmorland drive

After a few yards turn right along Birch Hill

Lane. Just after the dog kennels turn right at

the T-junction on to Pedler Brow lane. Follow

the lane to the end where a turn to the right

through a gate takes you on to tree lined

Middle Wood lane. Continue on this track to

the King William 1V pub at Shore.

Here you turn left up Higher Shore Road.

There is now a fairly long ascent to Higher

Shore Farm. Go through the gate ahead of

you onto Moor Gate lane. Follow the lane

uphill until you reach a gate and crossroads

take the track to the left sign posted Pennine

Bridleway Watergrove 1½ miles.

Continue along this path and take the first

turn left, through a wooden gate leading

down to Watergrove. You get good views

across Watergrove from this point.

On reaching the bottom of the track you

turn left along a trackway taking you

around the eastern side of the reservoir.

Alternatively, a gap in the reservoir wall

takes you onto a path between the trackway

and the reservoir.

On reaching the southern end of Watergrove

bear right and take the track which goes

down through the carpark and on to the

lane on the opposite side. Follow this lane

which leads south towards Clough House.

Just before you reach the house a short

trackway leads off to the left to a metal gate.

Go through the gate and bear right across

the field. Continue walking with the fence to

your right until you reach a stile in the corner

of the field. Cross the stile and turn right to

avoid the steep slope in front of you. Follow

the zig-zag path which leads downhill and to

the left. On reaching the path which crosses

in front of you turn right over the stile and

retrace the route back to Syke.

Our walks have now restarted

following the relaxation of the

restrictions imposed to control the

spread of coronavirus.

For the time being we are continuing to

implement social distancing measures in

line with government regulations.

The Syke Walk and Talk group was

formed almost 15 years ago. We offer

at least two walks each of different

lengths. Walks are free to attend and

led by trained leaders with knowledge

Protecting Local Moorland

by Partnership Working

During the last decade,

our local moorland has

been subject to increasing

erosion, much of it caused by

inappropriate and illegal use

by off-road motorcycles and

4x4 drivers.

The activities of these individuals and

groups not only destroys the enjoyment

of legitimate users such as walkers,

riders, runners and cyclists, but also has

significant environmental consequences.

Our ancient peat moors act as carbon

sink, capturing greenhouse gases from

the atmosphere and making a small

but significant contribution to slowing

down global warming. When our moors

are damaged and degraded, they

release captured carbon, reversing the

beneficial effects of capture. Evidence

of this erosion is clearly visible to anyone

who ventures on Scout, Knowl or Rooley

Moors . The ruts and tracks caused by

inappropriate use are making areas of

this unique habitat almost impassable;

worse still the state of the surface is

causing serious harm. A recent broadcast

by Rossendale Mountain Rescue made

it clear that, in recent years, there have

been increasingly frequent calls to assist

people who have experienced lower limb

dislocations and fractures, because of

the state of the surface, a situation made

worse by the increasingly hazardous

rescue routes.

Many people appear to see illegal offroading

on local moors as a “victimless

crime“; this is not the case, the damage

to this environment affects the ability of

Commoners to graze cattle and make a

living in the traditional way. The situation

is made worse when cattle and sheep are

harassed and distressed by these antisocial

groups and individuals. Recently,

some horse riders and passers-by were

assaulted by a group of motorcyclists

in Birtle. These individuals were so

determined to evade capture that, in an

effort to escape, they rampaged through

Ashworth Valley destroying fences, gates

and dry-stone walls as they went.

This is clearly a situation which cannot

and should not continue unchecked. Our

local police forces are using significant

amounts of their scarce resources to

deal with the problem, their frequent

operations across all local moorland have

apprehended not only riders and drivers

from our local area, but some from as far

afield as Merseyside, Wales and in one

case Edinburgh!

Combined police operations involving

GMP and Lancashire Police supported by

the Bury Police Off-Road Unit has resulted

in an increasing number of seizures

and confiscations in recent months. In

order to support enforcement activities,

local landowners, farmers, Councillors

from several Wards within Rochdale

and other local authority areas have

combined forces to donate and raise

funds for the installation of fencing and

other obstacles, designed to inhibit illegal

use. In addition to funding obtained our

local affected Wards and landowners,

the project has had financial backing

from the Duchy of Lancaster and the

Greater Manchester High Sheriff’s Fund

as well as Rochdale and Bury Bridleways

Association.

This important local initiative is designed

to make our moors a safer place for

Commoners and legitimate users and

will, in time, contribute to the preservation

and restoration of our local environment.

It is not legal to use our moors for off-road

motorcycling of 4x4 driving and many

of the protagonists are aware of this;

this is why so many of the apprehended

bikes and the vans which transport them

are untaxed, uninsured, have no MOT,

and eradicated vehicle identification

information. Those who wish to pursue

off-roading can always take advantage

of facilities such as Cowm Leisure in

Whitworth, where, for a very modest

sum, they can pursue their pastime in

safe surroundings without damaging

the environment or the enjoyment of

others. This scheme would not have been

possible without the support of GMP

officers, landowners, Ward Councillors,

working together with Rooley Moor

Neighbourhood Forum, Rochdale and

Bury Bridleways Association and several

Commoners coming together to focus on

this pressing local issue.

particularly our Rights of Way Officer,

Whitworth in Bloom

The Whitworth in Bloom group was set

up on 31 March 2019 with the aim of

improving the town by encouraging the

planting of sustainable greenery and

supporting projects that help eliminate

the ‘grotspots’.

It soon blossomed into something much

bigger! Within a month, the town was

entered into the North West in Bloom

competition so the pressure was on to create

a worthy display for the judges to enjoy.

Fortunately, Whitworth already had the

magnificent display in the Memorial Gardens,

managed by the Whitworth and Healey

Horticultural Society. In addition to this,

the start of the cycleway in Britannia soon

sported a refurbished bike with colourful

paniers, and the 41st Whitworth Scouts

transformed the area around the bike. Not

to be outdone, the Girl Guides planted

a delightful display at Hall street and

Whitworth Youth created accommodation

for our insect friends in the Bug Hotel!

Primary schools also joined in with the

pupils of St John with St Michael creating a

garden in memory of their schoolfriend Josh

McCormack and, at Tonnacliffe, an afterschool

gardening club was set up. The library

gardens were transformed and at Barley

View Care Home, the courtyard became

home to bird tables, a sensory wildflower

bed and raised planters for the growing of

herbs. All this in three and a half months!

Happily, the judges were impressed

and Whitworth was given a Silver

Award by the North West in Bloom

organisation. Delighted, Whitworth

in Bloom was

fired up and then . . .

. . . Covid-19.

Undaunted though, many individuals

from the group took it upon themselves to

maintain, tidy up and continue planting, as

was the case at Healey Corner. Perhaps not

surprisingly, the appreciation for our lovely

valley has resulted in an uptake in interest

in Whitworth in Bloom and this spring has

seen members undertake the much needed

task of litter-picking, recognising that the

Whitworth in Bloom philosophy embraces all

aspects of the environment.

Thanks to a grant from Crook Hill Wind

Farm, the group is looking at extending areas

for planting whilst maintaining the existing

places which have already benefitted.

The group is always open to newcomers

from within Whitworth or otherwise!
