Maternity hospital to close 

after nearly 100 years

LINCOLN Maternity Hospital 

is closing as health services in 

the district centralise. 

The hospital opened in 1927. 

Last year there were 148 births 

at the hospital. 

Now women will go to the 

new $14.7 million district 

council-owned Selwyn 

Health Hub to have their 

babies. 

The hub will be the new 

home for all maternity services 

in the district. 

Historically, Selwyn has 

also had maternity services 

at Darfield Hospital. However, 

following low numbers of 

births in recent years, these 

services have not been 

offered since pre-lockdown 

last year.

is consulting on moving Lincoln 

High School’s enrolment zone 

boundary further away from 

Rolleston, starting next year. 

It is due to rapid residential 

growth in Rolleston and a subsequent 

risk of overcrowding at the 

school. 

The ministry is seeking feedback 

through an online survey, 

which is open until June 8. It is 

using the opportunity to propose 

two other changes to the zone 

– making 

the northern 

boundary 

along the

extending the

The number of students 

attending Lincoln High has 

dropped following Rolleston 

College opening in 2017. 

While the number of domestic 

students has been around 1360 

for the last two years, five years 

ago it had more than 1600 domestic 

students. 

Rolleston College started 

with a roll of 225. It has grown 

exponentially since, to 1300 today.

proposed Lincoln zone change 

would not increase the Rolleston 

College zone, rather it would better 

clarify the zones of both schools. 

She said the college had been 

working with the ministry for 

some time on a large extension 

to the current school site. 

“We hope to be able to announce

this extension in the very near 

future,” Skelton said.

Police apprehended six drink 

drivers in the Darfield area 

on Saturday night. One of the 

offenders was caught after their 

vehicle left the road and went 

through a fence. The driver was

Thieves took items from what 

police believe were unlocked 

cars in Darfield during the early 

hours of Wednesday morning

Snow samples 

sought 

from skifields 

SKIERS ARE being asked to take 

samples of snow this winter as 

they visit skifields in the district. 

NIWA hydrologist Dr Alice Hill 

is launching the Aotearoa Snow 

Isotope Project, aimed at determining 

the amount of meltwater 

making its way into rivers and 

groundwater and how that may 

change over time. 

Hill will send sampling packs to 

interested skiers, with a pre-paid 

courier bag. A small amount of 

fresh surface snow needs to be 

scooped into the tube provided. 

“Just let the snow melt and then 

send it back to me,” she said. 

Hill said Canterbury was the 

initial focus, so she was targeting 

specific snowfields such as Temple 

Basin, Mt Hutt, Broken River, and 

Craigieburn. However, snow samples 

were also sought from citizen 

scientists all over the South Island 

to help build the database. 

“We need to get a wide spatial 

collection of isotope samples so 

we can improve our New Zealand-wide 

model which will make 

it more useful for understanding 

the role that snow plays across the 

country,” she said. 

The research was particularly 

important in a changing climate 

which may affect future supply.

twice the size of the existing

permission to dispose of the 

land, according to the set process 

for when a piece of land set 

aside for health purposes was no 

longer required.

Meanwhile, speculation that 

St John and the Lincoln fire 

brigade will set up at the 

maternity hospital building is 

unfounded. 

A St John spokesperson said 

he knew nothing about such 

a proposal, while fire chief 

Jeremy Greenwood said while 

the fire station building would 

need replacing at some stage, 

relocation to the site was not an 

option. 

Pacific Radiology has been 

confirmed as another anchor 

tenant at the health hub. The 

organisation is installing a $2 

million MRI scanner, as well 

as CT, ultrasound and x-ray 

machines. It plans to open in 

July. 

The council is also planning 

for a GP practice to operate from 

the health hub. 

Six years ago I spent several days at Birdlings Flat, 

an area I had not visited for over twenty years. 

It was a visit that would influence my painting 

in many ways. It added to my lexicon of places 

beside the sea that I often draw upon when 

working. 

Visually I was inspired by the shape of the hills 

and the conversations between sea, sky and land. 

I appreciated the austere elemental geology of 

the place. Not to get too esoteric about it, but I 

felt comfortable being uncomfortable there. 

Since then I have visited various parts of Banks 

Peninsula on a regular basis and each time I have 

come away with something new to explore via 

painting. 

Unlike earlier paintings these works are not 

seeking to capture or convey these landscapes. 

They are certainly shaped by it, but essentially 

are by-products of time spent walking, biking, or 

simply sitting and looking at local places.

RESIDENTS FROM Springston 

to Southbridge are being 

surveyed to explore options to 

save the trial 87 Southbridge-City 

bus service connecting to the city. 

Environment Canterbury 

spokesman Thomas McNaughton 

said the survey would gather 

feedback on three different 

options. 

“The more information 

we have, the better informed 

our balancing act will be,” 

McNaughton said. 

Option one is a Lincoln 

connection, from Southbridge 

to Lincoln in the morning, 

returning via a connecting service 

in the afternoon. It includes one 

morning and two afternoon trips 

Monday to Friday. 

Option two is a Rolleston 

connection, from Southbridge 

to Rolleston in the morning, 

returning via a connection 

service in the evening Monday to 

Friday. 

Option three is the existing 

service, but with a prepaid 

annual pass. This would cost 

$400 for an adult and $250 for 

a child. The service would only 

continue if at least 90 passes were 

bought. 

All options will continue the 

pick-up and drop-offs from 

Southbridge, Leeston, Doyleston, 

Irwell and Springston. 

ECan has come up with the 

options following gathering 

feedback at a community meeting 

in Leeston last month on the 

future of the trial service.

Move to acquire 

abandoned land 

by council 


THE DISTRICT council is 

moving to acquire abandoned 

land, which will extend the 

proposed Prebbleton Recreation 

Reserve. 

The district council at its 

fortnightly meeting today will 

consider commencing public notification 

to locate the successors 

of the former owners, Andrew 

Dawson and Alfred Richard 

Creyke, both deceased. 

Acquisitions disposals and 

leasing manager Rob Allen and 

acting major projects property 

manager Phillip Millar have recommended 

in their report before 

the district council today that 

the council pursue approval to 

acquire the land. 

The district council owned the 

surrounding land at 27 Hamptons 

Rd, containing 21ha, they said. 

It proposed to create a recreation 

reserve at the site to meet the 

current and future needs of sports 

and recreation. 

In the event that no living 

successors were identified by the 

advertising, the land could be 

taken by compulsion, considering 

the owners’ successors were either 

deceased or had not been located 

following advertisement.

intersection are among concerns 

raised by submitters to a 2100- 

home Rolleston private plan 

change. 

Plan Change 73 would rezone 

two former plantation forestry 

blocks – the 87.5ha Holmes block 

and 72.7ha Skellerup block – on 

Dunns Crossing Rd. It is one of 

seven plan changes before the 

district council 

altogether representing 

5709 

new residential 

lots for the 

town.

western Rolleston by up to 2100 

homes may necessitate another 

school in that area, as well as 

the extension of West Rolleston 

Primary School. 

The development would 

add up to 800 primary aged 

students, increasing pressure at 

West Rolleston Primary School, 

as well as Lemonwood Grove 

School, Clearview Primary, 

Waitaha School, Lincoln High 

School and Rolleston College. 

Lincoln High School is 

currently the subject of an 

enrolment zone change proposal 

from the ministry, to avoid 

the risk of overcrowding from 

Rolleston. 

The ministry requested Plan 

Change 73 only be approved if 

the applicant consulted with the 

ministry and made provision 

to accommodate the additional 

children, he said. 

“This could include amending 

the (plan) for the Skellerup Block 

to provide for a new school site 

and amending the (plan) for the 

Holmes block to provide for an 

expansion of West Rolleston 

Primary School,” Loughnan 

said. 

Another concern was the 

potential for the Holmes block 

alongside the school to have 

contaminated land. The ministry 

supported a detailed site investigation 

be carried out prior to any 

earthworks at the site. 

The ministry also wanted 

the applicant to mitigate 

potential amenity effects from 

a local business centre which 

would be located on the Holmes 

block alongside West Rolleston 

school. 

Fellow submitter NZTA opposed 

the plan change based on 

traffic concerns.

Stewart Fletcher said the Dunns 

Crossing Rd/Walkers Rd/State 

Highway 1 intersection was high 

risk. Crash data between 2015 

and 2019 had shown one serious 

crash and 15 minor/non-injury 

crashes. 

Fletcher said it was proposed 

to upgrade the intersection in 

2024, completed by 2026. A 

dual-lane roundabout was the 

preferred option at this stage.

He said while the applicant had 

recognised issues with the intersection 

and proposed to limit development 

of the Holmes block 

to no more than 97 dwellings 

occupied prior to the intersection 

upgrade, NZTA wanted no allotments 

created in either of the two 

blocks until the intersection had 

been upgraded. 

“Notwithstanding this, Waka 

Kotahi would be open to considering 

whether development in 

the Skellerup block is appropriate 

prior to the intersection upgrades 

being completed. However, a 

more detailed understanding 

of the likely travel behaviour of 

drivers leaving this block would 

be needed to determine the potential 

impacts on the intersection,” 

Fletcher said. 

The city council opposed the 

plan change unless concerns 

including the lack of a planned 

public transport network were 

addressed. ECan opposed the 

plan change in its entirety for 

reasons including it was inconsistent 

with planning policies 

and it would not necessarily add 

significantly to development 

capacity or contribute to a wellfunctioning 

urban environment. 

More than 30 submitters supported 

the plan change, at least in 

part, most of them wanting the 

council to include an even wider 

area in any rezoning exercise. 

More than 10 submitters opposed 

the plan change, at least in 

part, as they had concerns about 

issues including inadequate 

roading for increasing traffic and 

loss or rural aspect. 

The district council’s next 

step for Plan Change 73 is to

The submission process on Plan Change 

69, which would allow up to 2000 new 

homes at Lincoln, has been extended due 

to an error. 

Following public notification of the 

plan change on April 28, the district 

council was made aware of a minor 

error regarding the site area. This was 

notified as 186ha, when it is in fact 

190ha. 

The district council re-notified the

original date of May 26. 

Submissions received in response to the 

initial public notification on April 28 are 

still valid and will be considered by the 

council. By early last week, the council had 

received 24 submissions.

THE DISTRICT council has 

sent a letter to Waka Kotahi NZ 

Transport Agency, asking it not 

to sell 7ha of land alongside the 

Christchurch Southern Motorway 

at Prebbleton. 

NZTA owns the land and 

Bayleys has it listed for sale, with a 

deadline of May 26. 

The district council believes 

the land could provide a roading 

solution in future, by offering 

the potential to build a new 

Christchurch Southern Motorway 

exit and/or entry point along 

Waterholes Rd. 

The district council earlier considered 

making the request after 

the land sale was brought to its 

attention by Prebbleton resident 

Chris White. He is concerned 

about traffic congestion from the 

motorway through the town. 

Group manger property Douglas 

Marshall said he had sent 

the letter making the request on 

Friday. 

An NZTA spokesperson said a 

decision had not yet been made in 

response to the request. 

White hoped NZTA would 

respond to the district council’s 

letter by taking the land off the 

market.

Jess McJorrow lives in

her passion for sports 

to her new role as 

executive officer at 

Selwyn Sports Trust. 

She spoke to Susan 

Sandys 

What do you like most about 

your job? 

I’ve worked in sport for most 

of my career and have been 

involved in it all my life as 

well. (Prior to this role) I was 

community education manager 

South Island for St John and 

community sport adviser for 

Sport Canterbury. I guess I am 

fortunate in the sense that I get 

to combine my passion and my 

career, which is nice. I love the 

people I work with. In the sport 

sector, you work with passionate 

people. We don’t make millions 

of dollars, it’s not about that. 

It’s when you see a child or an 

adult participate, be for the first 

time or their 100th time doing 

something, they have that smile 

on their face, that enjoyment 

that what they have done they 

have really enjoyed. We can walk 

away and say that’s what we have 

been able to achieve. 

Was a career in the sports 

sector always your goal? 

I always knew that I wanted 

to be doing something in sport 

and physical activity. I ummed 

and ahhed about what that was 

going to be for a long time. But 

then when I left high school 

(St Margaret’s College), I went 

to Canterbury University and 

completed my bachelor of sports 

coaching. I loved my time at 

university doing that degree. 

It was lots of fun. And then it 

was, I guess, just pinpointing 

what path I wanted to take. 

I have a real passion for the 

community aspect. (When it 

comes to the) community versus 

the high performance space, 

the community is what floats

my boat – that participation, 

providing opportunities. I grew 

to know that was the area that I 

wanted to pursue. 

Tell me about Selwyn Sports 

Trust. 

The trust was set up in 2013 

and its primary objective is 

to increase participation in 

sport and active recreation for 

members of our community. 

We do that through a number 

of ways. Our vision is to inspire 

participation and people getting 

out there and getting active. 

There is seven paid workforce 

including myself. We also have 

an events manager and we have 

five activators getting out there 

and working in schools and the 

community. We have events 

for adults and all members of 

the community. We are sport, 

recreation, play, physical activity, 

it’s all encompassing. In our 

community events we have our 

Selwyn running festival, and 

that is supported by our weekly 

road runners. We have our Lake 

Crichton triathlon series which 

takes place at the start of the 

year. We have the annual Koru 

Games, which is a huge event 

for the trust. It’s a multi-day 

multi-sport tournament for year 

7 and 8 students. Students come 

from across the South Island. 

It’s growing every year, but we 

are looking at just under 2500 

students participating across 16 

sports. 

What brought you to 

Rolleston? 

I grew up in Templeton (so 

have mostly been on the south 

side of Christchurch). My 

husband and I built our first 

home here (at Rolleston) in 2017. 

I guess it was the opportunity, we 

were able to do that as a couple. 

We live not far from Foster Park. 

For an active family, it’s great. 

My husband was a water polo 

player, so he loves the aquatic 

centre just as much as I do. To 

have that on our back doorstep is 

wonderful. And it’s exciting, the 

opportunities George will have 

when he grows up, to make use 

of the facilities. 

What do you like about 

playing sport? 

I played many sports, 

basketball, netball, and it all 

comes down to the same 

answer – it’s the team culture,

being part of the team. That’s 

why I love it, without your 

teammates you can’t do 

everything, to me that’s the best 

thing in sports. 

What has been your main 

sport? 

I come from a rugby 

background, I played all 

through high school and then 

played club rugby, and I was 

fortunate enough to represent 

my province. I played for 

Hawkes Bay when I lived 

there, and I also played for 

Canterbury. When my body 

became too sore I moved to 

coaching and managing. My 

dad, Shawn Fibbes, and I 

actually established the Lincoln 

University rugby team, 2016 was 

our first year.

What were the highlights of 

your rugby career? 

Playing for my province was by 

far the highlight. I played in 2012 

for Hawkes Bay, I played for the 

Tuis, I was living up there for one 

year. Then I came back down to 

Canterbury and played for 2013 

and 2014 for Canterbury. That 

was always an aspiration of mine 

to play for my province. 

How old were you when you 

started playing rugby? 

I would have been 15. 

Did you get any push-back 

from people, being a girl 

who chose rugby over more 

traditional female sports? 

Yes, I did, absolutely. It’s come 

an incredibly long way since 

those days. I know for example 

my nana wasn’t very impressed 

that I was playing rugby. She very 

quickly came around, and she 

was one of my biggest supporters. 

I did really enjoy netball, I started 

when I was seven or eight. I 

have great memories early on 

of playing early on Saturday 

morning at Hagley Park in the 

freezing cold and the rain, and 

just thoroughly enjoying it. But 

I guess rugby pulled me to play 

because it just had more space, 

more opportunity (on the field). 

You had to think about tactics 

and strategy, and it all comes 

down to the fact there are more 

people on your team, so that 

(team) culture became heightened 

I guess, (compared to what) it was 

in a smaller team with netball. It 

wasn’t that I didn’t enjoy netball, I

just wanted something different. 

Was there more injuries with 

rugby? 

I’ve had nothing major to 

note – bumps and bruises, the 

odd ankle sprain and things. 

Rolled ankles (in netball). I would 

never say I got more injuries 

playing rugby than what I did 

playing netball; it actually it may 

have been less injuries playing 

rugby. I did get the odd knocks, 

and bumps and bruises. I really 

loved that about rugby, I loved 

the physicality of it, that was 

probably what I loved about 

rugby compared to netball. And 

because I was quite strong and 

well-built, that physical presence 

came naturally for me, I enjoyed 

that component of it and testing 

my strength. I was a forward, I 

had to be strong. 

Do you do any sports now? 

Not currently. I was playing 

social basketball and touch in the 

summer up until I was pregnant, 

I will pick that up when ready to 

do so. I love going swimming, I 

swim on my own, once a week, 

a kilometre. I take George to go 

and watch sports, so we become 

spectators. We follow the rugby 

teams. My best friend is a hockey 

player; George and I will go and 

watch her play hockey. I will pick 

those up again, but for now I am 

enjoying being a spectator. I just 

hope I pass on my love of sport 

to George and, hopefully, he will 

engage with it as well, I mean he’s 

six months old so I’ve got a bit of 

time up my sleeve.

I am strongly opposed to 

the possibility of Selwyn water 

being chlorinated. 

In this day and age it should 

not be necessary if the system is 

managed and working correctly. 

The district council should 

use our rates to pay for the 

upgrade, so chlorination is not 

required. I would happily pay 

more to drink a glass of water 

straight from the tap, as I always 

have done for nearly 60 years. 

Chlorine is poison, so is fluoride. 

We do not want to ingest 

any more poisons. It also tastes 

foul. 

The council should explore 

the use of chlorine dioxide as 

a water purifier. Many cities 

worldwide have used it for years 

in the public water supply. It 

is not poisonous to humans or 

animals and has no taste. It is 

already used extensively in the 

food industry to kill pathogens 

and destroy poisons through 

oxidation.

want chlorination is to cover 

their lack of highly skilled, registered 

licensed plumbers on 

district council staff. 

In the past, the Plumbers, 

Gasfitters and Drainlayers 

Board had oversight of 

safeguarding the public by 

maintaining the Ministry of 

Health standards. But there was 

a loophole – council staff were 

allowed to work on their own 

infrastructure without a licence. 

Councils are hesitant to 

employ registered licensed 

plumbers, because of cost to the 

ratepayers. The NZ Plumbers 

Magazine dated April/May 2021 

voiced their concerns with a 

submission to the Water Services 

Bill.

I suspect not, and as with 

Christchurch City Council it 

will dispute it was the chlorination 

that caused such a 

coincidental failure to so many, 

in spite of testimonials from 

plumbing contractors who say 

otherwise. 

With all the new houses being 

built in Selwyn and the extra 

revenue gathered from their 

rates then they should be able to 

absorb the cost to avoid having

SID THE long-haired jack 

russell had a lucky escape after 

becoming trapped inside a tree 

while chasing a possum. 

His owner, Guy Martin, said 

he had to use a chainsaw to cut 

a hole in the trunk to rescue Sid 

stuck in the bottom of the tree. 

The trouble started when the 

five-year-old was chasing a possum. 

Martin and a Lincoln University 

student were working on a 

block of land in Greenpark last 

week, tidying up branches and 

preparing a burn pile. 

“I went to get my gun and we 

carried on picking up sticks. 

Then the possum ran down the 

tree and Sid found the scent 

again. 

“He was sniffing around and 

obviously we got busy and were 

loading up the tractor. He must 

have got in there [the tree] somehow,” 

Martin said. 

He said the pair began to load 

up the other dogs that were there 

and were preparing to leave. 

“That’s when I remembered 

Sid and it must have been about 

half an hour that he’d been in 

there.” 

Martin had a suspicion the 

dog was in the tree as that was 

the last place they had seen him. 

“We went and turned the

truck off and listened and we 

could hear him down at the bottom 

of the tree. 

“I went home and got a couple 

of chainsaws and cut off a bit at 

the top of the tree and I could 

see down, about 3m down was 

all hollow.” 

Using a stick, Martin then 

measured the area he would 

need to cut into a square shape 

to free Sid. 

“The reason I cut where I did 

was because I knew Sid was 

below it so he jumped up and 

out. There was a bit of a method 

to my madness. 

“I was slightly concerned 

but I knew he wouldn’t be 

silly enough to jump up at the 

chainsaw. It was a bit of a leap of 

faith but he proved me right.” 

Martin managed to shoot the 

possum too, which he said Sid 

was happy about. 

The video was posted on a 

friend’s Facebook page and drew 

some attention. 

“A few people are questioning 

online whether it actually 

happened and it absolutely did.” 

Sid is also currently on the 

look-out for a female companion. 

“Before this incident, we had a 

long list of people wanting pups, 

I have a feeling it may grow after

open in 

old school 

premises 


THE FORMER Greenpark 

School near Tai Tapu will open as 

a non-denominational Christian 

learning centre and retreat on 

Sunday. 

Greenpark School closed in 

2014 and was bought by Christchurch 

couple David and Hillie 

Moot in 2018 for $555,000. 

Manager Rachel Lelsz, who 

is the Moot’s daughter, said the 

grand opening would mark the 

end of one era and the beginning 

of another. 

If the school was still operating, 

it would be 150 years old this year, 

so the event was to celebrate this 

birthday milestone. It would also 

mark the opening of the learning 

centre and retreat, to be called the 

Apostolic Centre for Training and 

Sending. 

Lelsz said countless hours had 

been put in by tradesmen and 

volunteers to fulfil her parents’ 

vision. The buildings had been 

renovated to become a modern 

facility, with short-stay accommodation 

for 30 people, while 

retaining the “history and charm” 

of the original school. 

ACTS will also be available 

for locals and church groups to 

use, and serve the community 

through an on-site food bank on 

alternate Thursdays. 

There are two classrooms with 

projectors and speaker systems, 

and a commercial kitchen. 

Lelsz said the facility offered a 

number of break-out rooms and 

outdoor spaces including a reflective 

native garden. The former 

school swimming pool had been 

restored and it was available for 

community use over the summer. 

“It really is such a peaceful place 

with a rich history, and we are all 

very excited to see what is going 

to come of it,” Lelsz said. 

The opening will be from 11am 

to 4pm, with formalities at 2pm.

Campaign to repair Lincoln-born 

Victoria Cross recipient’s family plot

in hand, regularly meanders 

through Bromley Cemetery, 

along the well-maintained rows 

of war veterans laid to rest. 

“I like to walk up and down to 

see which navy boys are there,” 

the soon to be 86-year-old 

Londoner explains. 

Wright’s interest in the sailors 

is understandable – he served in 

the Royal Navy for a decade, a 

time frame including the Korean 

War. 

Yet it is a Lincoln-born 

sergeant from the Canterbury 

Regiment, who was killed days 

before the end of World War 

1, that really resonated after he 

found the family plot of Henry 

James Nicholas by chance about 

20 years ago. 

Wright was intrigued when 

he first saw the letters VC and 

MM etched after the soldier’s 

surname. These days he is 

appalled when he looks down 

on the headstone, one of many 

toppled by the Christchurch 

earthquakes. 

“It looks a bloody mess and 

for a chap that’s got the VC he 

deserves a lot better than that. 

Being an ex-serviceman … 

I revere the Victoria Cross,” 

Wright said, before swivelling to 

scan the uniformed columns of 

headstones. 

They display fresh replica 

poppies added by the ‘New 

Zealand Remembrance Army’ 

before last month’s Anzac Day 

commemorations. 

“If they can do those, they can 

do this. They didn’t touch this 

one. Although it’s just a chunk 

of concrete, it could be stood 

up and displayed a lot better,” 

Wright said. 

He first noticed the grave 

when he visited family living 

next to the cemetery, he moved 

permanently to Bromley from 

Dunedin with wife Bronwyn last 

November to be close to their 

daughters. 

“I thought ‘I’m going to do 

something about this’ if I can. 

I wish the RSA would do 

something about it, even clean 

the stone a bit, sit it up, use paint 

to highlight the names,” he 

said. 

“I know there was an 

earthquake and God knows what 

but that was 11 years ago wasn’t 

it?” 

Wright may not be fighting 

a losing battle, with the Royal 

New Zealand Returned and 

Services’ Association national 

president BJ Clark pledging to 

investigate. 

“You’ve hit a raw nerve here 

because I helped put together 

the group that put the Henry 

Ken Wright first discovered 

the family plot of Henry 

Nicholas, seen here being 

mourned by fellow soldiers 

after he was killed in 

France, during a regular 

stroll through Bromley 

Cemetery.

Although grave maintenance 

is usually the responsibility of 

the family, the RSA-affiliated 

Remembrance Army has undertaken 

repair work throughout 

the country, when given permission 

by the local council. 

One of four sons raised by 

Richard and Hannah Nicholas, 

Henry was born on June 11, 1891 

and after working as a carpenter 

he enlisted in February 1916. 

Nicholas earned the Victoria 

Cross for his part in the attack 

on Polderhoek Chateau in Belgium 

on December 3, 1917. 

He rushed forward, ahead of 

his section, to destroy a German 

stronghold inflicting heavy casualties 

on the advancing troops. 

Nicholas used bombs and a 

bayonet to overcome the 16-man 

enemy garrison. 

The 27-year-old was presented 

with his VC by King George 

V at Buckingham Palace in 

July 1918, and then crossed to 

France where he was awarded 

the Military Medal for actions 

performed during operations on 

the Welsh and Bon Avis Ridges. 

Nicholas was killed in action 

near Beaudignies on October 23, 

1918 and is buried in the Vertigneul 

Churchyard. Hostilities 

ended on November 11, 1918. 

His VC was presented to 

his mother in Christchurch 

on Anzac Day, 1919 and she 

bequeathed his medals to Canterbury 

Museum. 

In 2008 a plaque recording the 

VC-worthy exploits of Canterbury’s 

first recipient was unveiled 

in Belgium; Nicholas is also 

remembered in Queen’s Garden, 

Dunedin. 

Wright’s plea unearthed an 

ally last week, when Diana Burgess, 

a niece of Nicholas, learned 

of the family plot. 

“We’ve never seen it,” she said, 

before being given directions. “I 

don’t like to think it has been in 

disrepair for as long as it has. I 

would be very, very pleased if it 

could be fixed.”

New pool nears opening 

at Selwyn Aquatic Centre 

The water is in as the new pool at Selwyn Aquatic Centre moves closer to opening. 

The new 10-lane, 25-metre pool will undergo testing this week, with the aim of opening in early June. 

The new pool is the next stage of a wider upgrade of the aquatic centre. Five new family changing 

rooms, a new accessible family changing room, and new smaller male and female overflow 

changing rooms next to the aquatic centre extension have already opened. 

The upgraded female changing rooms, foyer and additional administration space are on track to 

open in late June. 

The final stage will be changes to the existing main pool to improve the pool and allow more 

flexibility of use. 

Once the new pool has been opened for at least two weeks the existing pool will be closed for 

maintenance including reducing the depth of the pool. The new pool, leisure pool and learn to 

swim pools will remain open. 

Council Active Selwyn Manager James Richmond says reducing the depth of the existing main 

pool and reorienting the lanes to make 10 lanes, 20 metres long, with the existing ramp retained, 

will mean it can be better used for learn to swim classes. This will also free up space in the rest of 

the facility. 

“This will give us more flexibility and options for all our users across the whole facility. We’ll have 

a new pool with 10 lanes dedicated to lane and leisure swimming, and a pool for programmes like 

learn to swim and water safety classes that can also host some additional lane swimming, as well 

as our leisure and hydrotherapy pools.”

Fit out of Health Hub under way 

The first tenants have started installing equipment in their spaces in the 

Selwyn Health Hub as preparations continue for the facility's opening. 

Pacific Radiology installed its new $2 million MRI scanner last week, 

with a CT, ultrasound and x-ray machines to come in the next few 

weeks as its fit out continues. Pacific Radiology is hoping to start 

taking patient referrals by July. 

Canterbury District Health Board has also begun its fit out and is 

planning to have services open in early 2022. It will bring together 

the CDHB’s maternity, community dental and Child, Adolescent and 

Family mental health services for Selwyn in one centre. 

Those services will include a new Primary Birthing Unit with two 

birthing rooms and 10 post-natal beds, a three-chair Community 

Dental Unit and a community services area with six clinic rooms. 

Council Property Group Manager Douglas Marshall says it’s an 

exciting time for the project and the district. 

“Seeing that MRI scanner going in is a real tangible sign for people 

in Selwyn of the commitment and the quality of service that Pacific 

Radiology are bringing to the district. It’s another milestone for a hub 

that will bring new and improved health care services for Selwyn.” 

The $14.7 million Health Hub is funded as a commercial investment.

Final stretch for Selwyn’s new Long-Term Plan 

The Council’s work programme for the next 10 years is close to completion, with the Long-Term Plan 

2021–2031 expected to be confirmed and formally adopted by the end of June. 

Public hearings of submissions and council deliberations were completed last week, and staff are 

now working on finalising the plan – which sets out the Council’s key activities and budgets for the 

coming decade. 

At their meeting last week councillors expressed thanks to all those who made submissions and to 

those who presented their submissions in person. A total of 660 submissions were received during 

public consultation, and nearly 90 individuals and groups spoke at public hearings. 

Selwyn Heritage Fund 

Protecting our heritage today – preserving a window into the past, for our 

future generations. 

The Selwyn Heritage Fund is now accepting applications from groups and Selwyn rate payers, who 

have a project that is aimed at supporting the preservation of heritage buildings or trees in our district. 

The fund can be accessed to help with repairs, replacing chimney stacks or architectural features, 

tree trimming or pruning. 

The Heritage Fund opens on Tuesday 1 June 2021 and closes at 5pm on Tuesday 13 July 2021.

a quarter-final berth by the 

narrowest of margins. 

A 14-all stalemate was sufficient 

for Methven to nab the 

third and final quarter-final 

berth on offer from pool B, 

though their reward is an 

ominous sudden-death clash 

with last season’s champions 

Southbridge. 

Waihora out-scored Methven 

two tries to one but were held 

scoreless after the break. 

Crucially Waihora turned 

down what relieved Methven 

coach Simon Fleetwood considered 

a kickable penalty as fulltime 

loomed, opting instead to 

chase a deadlock-breaking try at 

Methven Domain on Saturday. 

Five teams in the pool were 

capable of qualifying for the 

quarter-finals, with top seeds 

Southern and Prebbleton the 

other teams to progress. 

Southern ended Lincoln’s 

quarter-final hopes with a 

comfortable 33-19 victory while 

Prebbleton prevailed in a highscoring 

encounter with Celtic,

“I believe Waihora were the 

better side on the day but they 

probably made some pretty 

average decisions,” said Methven 

coach Simon Fleetwood. 

“They had a penalty advantage 

for a high tackle and they obviously 

backed themselves to score 

a try to win the match, we just 

managed to hold them up over 

the line.” 

Waihora led 14-6 at halftime 

before conceding a penalty and 

an unconverted try, the draw 

enabled Methven to finish a 

point clear on the standings. 

“I’m relieved to reach our first 

goal. We’ve just got to prepare a 

few sore bodies this week, we’ve 

taken a bit of a pounding with 

injuries,” Fleetwood said.

Plenty of planting still to be done 

IN THE PAST, May has been 

regarded as the beginning of 

winter, especially in cooler parts 

of the country, however these 

days temperatures can fluctuate 

quite dramatically. 

Daylight hours are shorter, 

frosts will be occurring in central 

and southern regions, but regardless 

of the temperatures, it is 

time for winter gardening tasks 

to commence. 

In the vege patch 

Harvest vegetables that were 

planted in mid-to-late summer. 

This includes artichoke 

(Jerusalem), beetroot, broccoli, 

brussels sprouts, cabbage, 

cauliflower, carrots, celery, leeks, 

onions, parsnips, potatoes, silver 

beet and turnips. For continuity 

of harvesting, keep planting 

seedlings of cabbage, cauliflower, 

broccoli, spinach and silverbeet. 

You can also sow seeds of broad 

beans, onions, peas, radish and 

spinach directly into the soil. 

May is the recommended 

month for planting garlic. Cloves 

should be planted 40mm deep 

and 60mm apart. They should 

sprout around three to four 

weeks after planting. 

In areas of your vege garden 

where there are no winter vegetables 

growing, sow green manure 

crops eg; lupins and mustard. 

They should be dug into the soil 

in late winter/early spring and 

will improve the organic content 

of your soil. 

Strawberries 

May is the traditional month 

for planting new strawberry 

plants. Prepare the soil thoroughly; 

add compost. Create 

mounds 200mm above soil 

level to ensure good drainage 

and early warming of the soil in 

spring. Plant into the mounds at 

150-200mm apart. 

Flower garden 

CARE: Add 

compost to

your children 

involved, they will 

then enjoy the 

fruit even more.

Fruit trees 

It’s pruning time for pip and 

stone fruit trees including; 

apples, apricots, nectarines, 

peaches and plums. Grapes can 

also be pruned, however wait 

until you have harvested your 

kiwifruit before pruning vines. 

Roses 

Amazingly, in warmer areas, 

some roses are still flowering 

such as icebergs and graeme 

thomas. However, in cooler areas 

where leaves have fallen, plants 

can be pruned. Apply a winter 

spray of a copper compound to 

help prevent typical rose diseases 

reappearing in spring. New roses 

will be in garden centres now. 

Chose new specimens carefully, 

noting which ones perform best 

in your area. 

Ornamental trees and 

shrubs 

New stock is beginning to 

appear in your local plant shops, 

especially camellias. If you are 

planning a new garden or adding 

new ornamental trees or shrubs 

to an existing one, always allow 

enough room for individual 

specimens to grow to maturity. 

Prepare the site well for plantings, 

ensuring there is enough 

drainage so roots do not become 

waterlogged. 

Lawns 

Growth will now be slowing 

and low-lying lawns will begin 

to become saturated. Install 

additional drainage coil where 

required and before your lawn 

becomes too wet. 

Hedges 

Final tidy up time for your 

hedges. Do not undertake major 

trimming as there will be little or 

no new growth until spring.

get prepared for planting garlic. 

Garlic is a crop that is easy to grow and doesn’t require 

a lot of space. Garlic also has many health benefits as 

well as adding fantastic flavour to our food. All you 

need is a pot or container, some top-quality growing 

mix and a sunny spot somewhere around the house. 

If you are starting from scratch, make sure you get a 

good growing mix that is free-draining and supplies 

the right nutrients. For pot and container planting, you 

can use our Patio Plus Potting Mix, All Purpose Potting 

Mix, Organic Growing Mix or Veggie Garden Mix. If you 

have an existing area that you want to plant in, simply 

mix through some organic compost and sheep pellets 

to rejuvenate the soil if you haven’t done so already.

When choosing which cloves to plant, make sure 

you choose the larger ones to maximise the growing 

potential. Split the garlic heads into individual cloves. 

There is no need to peel off the white paper that 

surrounds each clove, it naturally protects the bulbs in 

the soil, and then disintegrates once the plant starts 

developing. 

When planting out, make a hole about 5cm deep, and 

10cm apart. If you are planting in a large area, label the 

rows so you don’t forget where you have planted. In 

4-6 weeks you will see the bright green shoots appear. 

Once they have popped up, add a layer of mulch 

around the rows to help keep the soil temperature 

even, retain the moisture, and keep the weeds down. 

Make sure you water frequently as to not let the plant 

dry out. If you’re unsure if your mix is drying out, the 

best way is to feel the soil with your fingers. If it feels 

dry – give it a water.

I’LL BE brutally honest, 

I prefer cars with big 

engines. 

However, as time goes by 

any engine that is honest 

has charmed me, and it’s 

fair to say Mercedes-Benz 

builds beautiful engines, 

strong, smooth and 

efficient. 

I mention big engines 

because the new Mercedes- 

Benz E-Class sedan has 

a V8 engine option, and 

from previous experience 

with that engine in other 

models I can report it is an 

absolute cracker in terms of 

performance. 

The E-Class sedan also 

comes in two four-cylinder 

variants – the E300 e that 

is also a plug-in hybrid 

model, and the E200 which 

this evaluation focuses on. 

I’m not complaining, 

the E200 is a beautiful 

car and it’s turbocharged 

four-cylinder engine surely 

has the goods to propel the 

vehicle in a manner fitting 

of the Mercedes-Benz 

brand. 

The E200 sedan lands 

here at a touch over 

$106,000, if you want 

hybrid that will add an 

extra $40k, while the 

E63 S V8 comes in at a 

substantial $239,900, but I’d 

be saving my pennies for 

that one. 

That aside, the E200 is a 

worthy luxury car, and all 

those who know me will 

tell you I like the sedan 

concept and I also like rearwheel-drive. 

Obviously the engine 

sits longitudinally up front 

and drives through a ninespeed 

automatic gearbox. 

Mercedes-Benz claims 

power outputs of 145kW 

and 320Nm, these are up 

slightly from previous 

generations of this engine, 

those fitted in other models 

from this high profile 

German manufacturer. 

The E200 is a big car 

(4.9m) and it weighs in 

quite tubby at around 

1700kg, so it needs as 

much energy under the 

bonnet as it can get, and 

being a turbocharged 

boosted unit it develops 

strong torque through 

the mid range, maximum 

spread is available from 

just 1650rpm. If you take 

into account peak power 

registers at just 5500rpm 

then there is little boost 

drop-off anywhere in the 

rev range. 

There’s also a claimed 

standstill to 100km/h time 

of 7.5sec, which is pretty 

smart for that bulk, and it 

will also scamper through 

a highway overtake in 5sec 

(80-120km/h). 

More importantly, 

though, is the 

MERCEDES-BENZ E200: Vast array of 

specification and fitment, especially for safety.

array of gearbox ratios 

means that gaps are filled 

seamlessly, the entire 

transfer of power to the 

wheels is smooth and 

controlled.

That’s the way it is in a 

premium car, and the E200 

is quite simply built for the 

luxury market, it cocoons 

the occupants with plush 

deep dish seats covered 

in leather. There are all of 

the trimmings you would 

expect for $100k and the 

functions are sophisticated 

yet laid out in an intuitive 

manner. I particularly like 

the steering wheel controls, 

they have a non-haptic feel, 

you just simply slide your 

fingers over them to adjust 

settings. 

There is also a wide 

touch screen which 

extends almost the entire 

width of the dash panel, 

some of the functions can 

also be manipulated by a 

centre console mouse-like 

device. This is something 

Mercedes-Benz does 

well, the trim quality and 

fitment is nothing short of 

exceptional. 

That feel extends all of 

way to ride comfort. The 

E200 doesn’t get the air 

suspension of some of its 

stablemates, but it does 

have adaptive damping that 

imparts a soft, supple ride. 

Saying that, there is little 

handling compromise. I 

took the test car west to 

Darfield and through the 

scenic route to Glenroy, 

the E200 covers open 

stretches quickly, good 

use of the cruise control 

is recommended. When 

the flowing corners are 

presented turn-in is sharp, 

while the push from the 

rear end promotes a natural 

handling sensation, and in 

the tight stuff any feeling of 

oversteer is quickly arrested 

by a complex traction 

control system. 

You don’t buy a prestige 

car without receiving all 

of the safety kit, the E200 

is simply loaded with 

features way too numerous 

to mention. Much of it 

has been upgraded from 

the previous generation 

model, notably the lane 

keep system which allows 

the driver to relax his/her 

hands on the wheel. 

The E200 is also 

remarkably thrifty. 

Mercedes-Benz claims 

an eight-litre per 100km 

combined cycle average. 

The comprehensive 

fuel usage displays were 

constantly listing around 

9l/100km during my 

time in the evaluation car. 

That aided by a 5.5l/100km 

figure sitting at 100km/h 

on the highway, the engine 

very relaxed turning over 

at just 1500rpm in ninth 

gear. 

Mercedes-Benz doesn’t 

sit back and let grass grow. 

The company has a strong 

generational system, and 

with such an extensive 

range new models are 

arriving almost on a 

constant basis. 

The E200 sedan is very 

classy and any purchaser 

will be delighted with 

the way it makes you feel 

inside the car. The E-Class 

also has coupe or cabriolet 

options. 

I certainly I hope the E63 

S heads my way.


MY PRIDE AND JOY 

Darfield’s well-loved 

slice of history 

The 1957 A3 Bedford fire engine, housed 

at Darfield Fire Museum, is enjoying a 

charmed life as an ambassador for the fire 

station, giving rides at local events and 

raising funds for the museum plus raising 

awareness around the work of the local fire 

service. Its sparkling, bright red body paint 

is testament to the loving care the engine 

receives on a regular basis. 

The “old truck”, as Darfield volunteer fire 

brigade member and museum operator 

Terry Hutchinson fondly refers to it as, 

started its life in service as Darfield’s 

first fire tender in October 1957. Until 

its arrival the newly formed fire brigade 

fought fires with a portable pump and 200 

gallon tank mounted on a car chassis that 

was towed by a car. 

According to ‘Responding to the call’ 

a booklet about the first fifty years of the 

Darfield Fire Brigade, the Bedford was the 

first purpose tender designed specifically 

for rural fire fighting. At the time, a local 

garage owner supplied the Bedford truck 

and chassis and the necessary firefighting 

equipment was built in Wellington. The 

local fire chief had the tank capacity 

upgraded from 300 gallons to 400. 

The fire engine would have likely 

attended its first fire in November 1957, 

when the crew was called to a hedge fire. 

With just room for the driver and the fire 

officer in the cab, Terry says the truck 

would have been drafty for those sitting on 

the back. “You can imagine what it was like 

in the winter; they had to squat down in 

the back to stay out of the wind.”

the open road reaching a top speed of 

80kmph. “It rattles a bit, has no power 

steering or synchromesh gearbox but is 

still happy to work.” 

After several years in service in Darfield, 

the truck was replaced by a new purposebuilt 

1978 Commer with a built-in pump. 

It was then sent to Ikamatua Fire Brigade 

to become the service’s first line appliance. 

It was eventually retired to Greymouth 

Fire District, where it became a hose layer 

until the 1980s when it was purchased 

by the Selwyn District Council to service 

Arthur’s Pass. The fire engine was finally 

purchased by an enthusiastic committee to 

bring it back to Darfield. 

Despite the fire engine’s many 

adventures over the years, Terry says its 

physical appearance hasn’t changed much. 

“It was a bit tatty after being in service and 

has since had a new coat of paint plus an 

upgrade of electrics.” The old fire engine 

now takes pride of place at the Darfield 

Fire Museum – open every 3rd Sunday 

from 12pm-3pm on North Terrace beside 

the fire station.

plan is a requirement of the 

Fire and Emergency New 

Zealand Act 2017. 

The fire plan outlines 

policies and procedures,

safety, and fire risks. Each 

fire plan outlines things like: 

• declaring the beginning 

and end of fire seasons 

• prohibiting and restricting 

fire use
