COMPLIANCE:
Some of the most common mistakes that homeowners/renters make are:
• Forgetting to cut, weed and edge your grass on a regular basis:
• Frequency of maintenance depends on the weather, rate of growth,
weeds, etc.; however, the maintenance must occur often enough to
ensure the lawn is maintained to the community wide standard.
• Forgetting to put up your trash can at the end of a trash collection day:
• Please put your trashcan and recycle bin away and out of public view.
Leaving your can by the front of the garage door or on the side of the
home warrants a letter from Mgmt. Co.
• If you have a lack of storage space within your garage, an alternate
solution might be to purchase an enclosure for the side of your yard,
which hides the trash can from view.
• Not putting in a Home Improvement application before you make a
modification to the exterior of your home.
Speed Limit:
The posted speed limit for the community is 25 mph.
STREET GUTTERS AND DRAINS:
Please keep the street area in front of your house clean, so that leaves,
pine needles, grass clippings, dirt and liter will not accumulate in the
gutters next to the curb. Accumulated debris will end up being washed
into the drains causing them to back up and flood the streets. This
includes lawn contractors that are blowing debris into the street instead
of bagging them.
For His Eyes Only
How much do you know about your health?
Take our quiz!
Dr. James Scott
Pearce
Q:
Enough with the dirt-splattering, off-road
truck commercials. Want to know how to
be a true man of action? Take charge of
your health. This quick quiz will help you
discover what you know about the top
health risks for men.
Men between the ages of 30 and 50 are most
likely to have:
A Hip bursitis
B A herniated disk in the lower back
C A midlife crisis
Answer: B. According to Dr. James Scott Pearce, a boardcertified
family medicine physician with Houston Methodist
Primary Care Group, risk factors for a herniated disk include
improper lifting, being overweight, repetitive activities that
strain the spine, a sedentary lifestyle and smoking.
WHAT YOU CAN DO: Develop a relationship with a primary
care physician to live your healthiest life.
“As a family medicine physician and primary care provider,
my focus is always on preventive care,” said Pearce, who
sees men of all ages at the Houston Methodist Primary Care
Group practice in West Houston for routine checkups and
annual physicals, in addition to acute care and managing
chronic conditions.
Q:
After skin cancer, ________ cancer is the most
common cancer in men.
A Prostate
B Bone
C Lung
Answer: A. Prostate cancer strikes 1 in 6 men and is the second
most prevalent cancer in men. But only about 1 in
36 men diagnosed with prostate cancer will die from it.
WHAT YOU CAN DO: Talk with your doctor about the risks as
well as the potential benefits and limitations of PSA (prostatespecific
antigen) screening.
Q:
How many men in the United States have
type 2 diabetes?
A 7 million
B 13 million
C 79 million
Answer: B. Additionally, an estimated 79 million Americans
have prediabetes, a condition in which blood glucose levels
are higher than normal.
WHAT YOU CAN DO: Know your numbers. Pearce
recommends having your blood glucose tested to see whether
you have type 2 diabetes or prediabetes — and get active.
“Annual health screenings and physicals typically are a great
opportunity to identify health concerns as early as possible,”
Pearce said. “The sooner we detect risk factors for diseases
like type 2 diabetes and skin cancer, the more likely we are to
be successful in managing or even avoiding these conditions.”
Houston Methodist Primary Care Group
physicians welcome new and established
patients to take the next step toward
better health through preventive care in addition to
acute care and managing chronic conditions. Visit
houstonmethodist.org/west-pcp to schedule a
virtual or in-person appointment with a primary care
doctor in West Houston.
PLANNING WISELY -
CONSERVING WATER
Water is a limited resource everywhere. Though the eastern half of the
United States typically receives enough (or sometimes too much) there
are dry areas that sometimes do not receive enough rain for the demand.
Most low-elevation areas of the western United States have low rainfall
rates and a long dry season and though the overall western water supply
remains virtually fixed, ever more people are putting demands on it.
Thus, conserving water is (or should be) a concern everywhere. Here are
a few tips for waterwise gardening.
Locate plants CAREFULLY
Group plants with similar water needs together. They can then be
irrigated together and no plant will receive too much or too little water.
This concept is called hydro zoning. To cut water use on plants that need
regular moisture, site the “thirsty” individuals in a spot shielded from
drying summer winds.
Mulch your plantings
An organic mulch spread several inches thick over the soil acts as an
insulating blanket, slowing evaporation from the soil and keeping it cooler
than it would be if unprotected. Rocks and gravel also do the job. Black
plastic sheeting, sold in rolls, conserves moisture and suppresses weeds.
You can also buy rolls of various plastic materials known collectively as
landscape fabrics. Permeable to water and air, these are manufactured
expressly for use as a mulch.
Eliminate runoff
Don’t waste water by irrigating paved surfaces. If your sprinkler system
showers water over sidewalks, patios or driveways, replace the heads with
a model that delivers water where it is needed. Or redesign the system.
Sloping land and heavy clay soils invite runoff - due to gravity in the first
case, due to slow water penetration in the second. To solve the problem,
adjust the rate at which water is applied. If you use sprinklers, you can
improve penetration by watering in several successive short intervals,
allowing time for water to soak in between each spell of sprinkling.
Terraces and basins can also help prevent runoff on slopes.
HOW TO CELEBRATE FATHER’S DAY
Father’s Day is the time to celebrate the great bond between father and
his child. It is the occasion, when the world acknowledges the importance
of fatherhood. If you want to make the special day a memorable one for
your dad, then add color to the celebrations. With some efforts and a
little bit of creativity, you can make the day the most memorable one
for the head of your household. we have provided some ideas that will
brighten up the celebration of Father’s Day. Celebrate Father’s Day with
the important male figures in your life. Invite your grandfather, brother,
uncles, husband/would-be to join you in the celebrations. It is definite
that they will add color to the occasion.
• You may focus the celebration on a particular activity, say, a competition.
You may organize singing, dance, craft making competitions and invite
the kids as well as the adults to take part. This would be the best bet; in
case you are planning to throw a party for your dad.
• Arrange an extravagant brunch buffet for your father and show him
that Father’s Day is as important as any other festival. For the budget
conscious lot, organizing an economical luncheon will be better.
• Refresh the special moments that you have shared with your dad, by
walking down the memory lane. To do this, collect the old photographs
that you have clicked with your daddy and make a collage. Display it in
the venue (of celebrations) or present it to your father.
• Plan the day that revolves around your dad’s favorite pastime. If he loves
to play games, then consider buying tickets to a game.
• If your dad is interested in sports, the best bet would be organizing a
sports event for your family. You may ride in bike along a scenic trail with
other family members or arrange a mock Olympics, complete with relay
races. Culminate the day with an award winning ceremony.
• For a movie buff dad, organizing a movie marathon will be a nice idea.
Turn your living room into a home theatre. For the purpose, arrange an
overhead projector, get a collection of DVDs of your dad’s favorite flicks
and enjoy watching movies along with him. You may invite your close
relatives to join in the celebration. Make sure you have snacks to munch
during the movie.
• On Father’s Day, display your culinary skills to him. Dig up your father’s
favorite recipes and prepare a meal for him. If you are not adept at the
art of cooking, you may make a reservation at his favorite restaurant,
for lunch or dinner. Sum up the celebrations by presenting him some
cooking gadgets or a cook book.
KATY’S NEWEST FILMMAKING AND ANIMATION
mock Oscars Film Festival where your child will pick their favorite film
that they made to be shown on the big screen! We are running our first
camps this summer and we would love to have some support from the
local community to get us off to a good start. Camps are held at Mirus
We have done everything we can to try and reopen our doors, including
becoming the first theater in the country to install hospital grade UV
lights in our air filtration system. We even offered a safe and distanced
indoor concert as well as an indoor offering from our educational touring
unit this past fall. And when those projects proved financially challenging
and COVID numbers spiked again, we created “Light Up the Lot” and
moved all our programming outdoors.
We’ve never given up. We never will give up. But due to circumstances
beyond our control, we find ourselves needing to pivot once more.
KATY VIRTUAL SCHOOL RECOGNIZED FOR
OUTSTANDING DISTANCE LEARNING
At Katy Independent School District, online learning has become
an increasingly popular and effective method of education, by both
students and parents, because of the expanded learning opportunities
available. Due to its commitment to offer distance education, the
District’s Katy Virtual School (KVS) has been recognized by the Texas
Distance Learning Association (TxDLA) as the 2021 K-12 winner of the
Outstanding Commitment to Excellence and Innovation in Distance
Education recognition.
“Katy ISD was the only K-12 school district in Texas to receive such a
prestigious award,” said Susan Richards, Katy ISD Instructional Technology
e-Learning Manager. “KVS has expanded over the years to provide
secondary students quality instruction outside of normal school hours and
during the summer to support their graduation plans,” added Richards.
KVS launched in 2013 with a primary goal of offering choice and
flexibility for rigorous online courses developed and taught by Katy ISD
teachers. Over 45 Advanced Placement (AP), Katy Advanced Program and
academic level courses were available to students this year with more
courses being added each year. Just last year, over 4,000 students utilized
KVS to reach their educational goals. KVS is a different program from the
recently developed Katy Virtual Academy (KVA), which was created for
online learning during the pandemic.
DONATUTORS
Donatutors is a nonprofit tutoring organization that donates 100% of
our proceeds to charity. All of our tutors are straight-A students at Seven
Lakes High school and we offer a multitude of courses like creative
writing, computer science, biology, public speaking, ICTW writing and
many different math courses too. We charge $20 per class, but the first
one is free! For more information, check out donatutors.com or email
us at donatutors@gmail.com. What’s even cooler is that this summer
Donatutors was able to raise $1,283 which we used 70% to give to a
Houston based charity called NAMI and 30% to buy a bunch of masks
and canned food for donation. Please check us out!
KISD NEWS
JUNE IS NATIONAL CAMPING MONTH
National Camping Month in June is an excellent time to pack up your
gear and experience nature. Whether you like roughing it or prefer
to have a few modern conveniences when heading out to the trail, it’s
important to keep a few things in mind:
1. Make sure you have plenty of fresh water or a fresh water source.
2. Take a first aid kit and that it is stocked.
3. Pack waterproof matches.
4. Take non-perishable food such as granola bars, jerky, peanut butter,
chocolate bars and dried fruits, especially if you are not taking a cooler.
5. Pack fruits, vegetables and meats separately and keep chilled in a
cooler.
6. Include sunblock, even for cloudy days.
7. Rain gear, jackets and blankets are necessary for cooler weather.
Around the country, there are a variety of campsites available. The more
modern campsite includes showers and recreational facilities. These often
include water hookups and parking pads for RVs and campers and cabins to
rent as well as more primitive sites with no electrical hookups designed for
tent usage. Other parks only allow primitive camping and require everything
you pack into the park to be packed out. So, seriously consider your needs
if you are hiking into the park for your stay. These are not for the glampers.
Gather family and friends, don’t forget the s’mores supply and go
camping! Nature is calling and there are so many ways to enjoy a
weekend or even more camping. National Camping Month has been
observed since the 1970s.
8 BEST SUMMER VACATION
DESTINATIONS IN TEXAS
1. GALVESTON: If you’re looking for a classic beach getaway, then a visit
to Galveston is a must. Galveston beach is a popular summer destination
among Texans, especially those in Houston, since Galveston is only about an
hour drive from downtown. Galveston offers more than just the beach too,
however beach fun is why many people flock here. Enjoy great shopping
along the Strand, escape the heat by visiting Moody Gardens or try the
thrilling water rides at Schlitterbahn Waterpark. There are plenty of hotels,
resorts, and rental properties here that cater to the influx of summer tourism.
2. GARNER STATE PARK: Spend time camping and tubing down the Frio
River when you visit Garner State Park this summer. Garner State Park,
located in Concan, Texas, is a popular summer destination among Texans.
Although there are plenty of hiking and wildlife watching opportunities
in the park, the main draw here is truly the Frio River, where the state park
has 10 acres of river frontage. Many people kayak, tube, fish and even
snorkel here. Garner State Park is so popular during the summer that
the park hosts live music concerts on the weekend. This Texas summer
destination is definitely a family-friendly spot.
3. CORPUS CHRISTI: If you’re looking for more of a quiet beach scene than
Galveston, then Corpus Christi is more your vibe. Tourism grows here during
the summer and for good reason. Corpus Christi, or simply referred to as
“Corpus” by Texans, has beautiful Gulf Coast beaches that are perfect for
sunbathing, surfing, and windsurfing. If you’ve grown tired of the beach scene,
the town of Corpus Christi offers a number of attractions, such as the Texas
State Aquarium, the South Texas Botanical Garden, and the U.S.S Lexington.
4. SAN ANTONIO: Escape to central Texas this summer by vacationing in
San Antonio. With a unique city vibe full of history and culture, this Texas
city makes for a great summer getaway. Stroll the Riverwalk to enjoy a great
meal, explore the Alamo to learn about Texas history or even enjoy a thrilling
roller coaster at Six Flags Fiesta Texas. San Antonio is a great summer vacation
for foodies, since the area is packed with incredible restaurants from hole-inthe-wall
Mexican joints to classy cuisine found along the Riverwalk.
5. SOUTH PADRE ISLAND: South Padre Island may be known as a spring
break destination but it shouldn’t be dismissed as a great summer travel
spot as well. This Gulf Coast town is home to the most beautiful beaches in
the Lone Star State. If you’re hoping for beach time this summer, then South
Padre Island should be your destination of choice. With miles of white sand,
plenty of shops to occupy your non-beach days, and even a Schlitterbahn
Waterpark location, South Padre Island transcends from its spring break
reputation into a popular spot during the summer months too.
6. AUSTIN: Texas’ capital city has plenty to see and do during the summer
months. Known as the Live Music Capital of the World, music lovers will
find plenty of live music acts in Austin when they visit during June, July
and August. Big headliners always hit up ATX during their summer tours,
while local acts can be seen for free anywhere from coffee shops, local
music venues and even the airport. Visit the Texas State Capitol, view the bat
colony under the South Congress Bridge at dusk, shop the electric boutiques
along South Congress Avenue and enjoy a wide variety of food truck cuisine
during your summer stay in Austin. If you’re looking to escape the heat, take
a dip in the Barton Creek Greenbelt or Barton Springs Pool.
7. NEW BRAUNFELS: New Braunfels is a Hill Country destination that has
grown into a popular summer getaway due to the Guadalupe and Comal
Rivers and the up-and-coming craft beer scene here. Beat the Texas heat
by floating in the cool waters of the Comal or Guadalupe Rivers. New
Braunfels has strong German roots, so enjoy a bratwurst and a German
beer during your summer stay here. If dancing and live music is your
thing, then don’t miss out on a visit to the historic Gruene Hall, which is
only 10 minutes outside of New Braunfels.
8. BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK: Last but not least is Big Bend National
Park. Although this park is located in west Texas, a desert environment,
don’t let the heat scare you away. Take a hike during the early mornings
or evenings to catch views of wildlife and avoid the desert heat during
the day. This area is also known for its dark night skies, so stargazing is a
must when you visit during the summer. Take a scenic drive or raft the Rio
Grande to find a cool escape in this desert oasis.
