UN after Canada for exhaustive investigations
for residential school victims
Edmonton(ATB): The
United Nations Human
Rights Office urged
Canada on Wednesday
to do all it can to find
the Indigenous children
that died at residential
schools, calling for an
"exhaustive investigation"
to uncover the remains
of former students
that may have
been left in unmarked
graves.
Marta Hurtado, a
spokesperson for the
UN body, said the federal
government must
"redouble its efforts to
find the whereabouts of
missing children" in the
wake of a preliminary
investigation at the
former Kamloops Residential
School in B.C.
that revealed 215 children
were buried on the
grounds.
"Remains should be
identified and forensic
studies carried out to
ensure proper identification
of remains. Without
this, healing is not
possible," Hurtado said
in a statement.
The UN said the
"shocking" and "painful"
Kamloops discovery
should inspire
Canada to implement
the Truth and Reconciliation
Commission's
calls to action, which
included a section on
missing children and
burial information.
In their landmark 2015
report, the commissioners
called for the
establishment of a student
death registry and
an online registry of
residential school cemeteries,
among other
recommendations to
help communities
document lost loved
ones.
Hurtado said Canada
must improve its residential
school-related
record-keeping to give
families and Indigenous
communities better access
to documents relating
to missing and
deceased family members.
Murray Sinclair, the
former chair of the TRC
and a retired senator,
has said as many as
6,000 children may
have died at residential
schools.
The Roman Catholic
Church, in particular,
has refused to release
many of its residential
school documents, citing
privacy laws.
While other churches,
like the Anglican and
United churches, have
apologized for their role
in this system, Catholic
leadership has so far
only expressed "sorrow."
After an exhaustive,
six-year probe, the TRC
found most of these
children died from malnourishment
or disease.
Some children
who attended the
schools in the 1940s
and '50s were also subjected
to science experiments
in which they
were deprived of essential
nutrients and dental
care.
Residential schools
were established in the
19th century and the
last one closed in 1996.
Speaking to reporters
Wednesday, Crown-Indigenous
Relations Minister
Carolyn Bennett
said the government
already earmarked
some $33 million in its
2019 budget to implement
the TRC's burial-

All eligible Albertans in for second
vaccine dose by end of June
Edmonton(ATB):All
Albertans aged 12 and
older will be eligible to
book a second dose of
COVID-19 vaccine by
the end of the month,
Premier Jason Kenney
announced Tuesday.
Kenney outlined the
province’s second
dose rollout plan, which
allowed individuals who
received a COVID-19
vaccination in March or
earlier to book their
second dose starting
Tuesday afternoon.
Those who were
vaccinated in April to
book second doses
beginning June 14,
while those who were
vaccinated in May will
be able to on June 28.
“This is yet another big
milestone in our fight
against COVID-19 and
it takes us even closer
to a post-pandemic
world where we can get
back to doing what we
love and spending time
with those that we most
care about,” Kenney
said.
Health Minister Tyler
Shandro said the
schedule for second
doses is “well ahead” of
what was anticipated.
“We’ve based out
these start dates on
purpose to ensure that
everyone is still getting
their doses within the
maximum 16-week
interval. In fact, the
longest interval will be
just over 12 weeks,”
Shandro said.
Those who received the
AstraZeneca vaccine
will be able to book
their second dose
eight weeks from their
first dose, meaning
anyone who received
AstraZeneca in March
will also be able to
begin booking their
second dose as of
Tuesday.
Individuals who
received AstraZeneca
will be able to choose
between Pfizer,
Moderna, or
AstraZeneca for their
second dose, following
new guidance issued
by the National
Advisory Committee on
Immunization on
Tuesday.
Across Canada, 41
confirmed or
suspected cases of

Trudeau vows to uncover truth behind children’s mass grave
Ottawa, (ATB)- Canadian Prime Minister
Justin Trudeau said his government would
take further actions in response to the discovery
of the remains of 215 children in a former
residential school in Kamloops city.
Amid calls for accountability and to go
beyond lowering flags at federal buildings,
Trudeau told the media on Monday that Indigenous
Services Minister Marc Miller, Crown-Indigenous
Relations Minister Carolyn Bennett and
Northern Affairs Minister Dan Vandal would discuss
what role his government should be playing
in response to the development, reports
Xinhua news agency.
Kamloops school horror
Remains of 215 indigenous children
were found at a former residential school near
Kamloops in British Columbia on May 24
Some of the students were as young as three
when they died, it is stated
Causes and timing of deaths are not yet known
On May 24, the Tk’emlups te Secwepemc First
Nation in Kamloops city, British Columbia, announced
that ground-penetrating radar uncovered
the remains of 215 children at Kamloops
Indian Residential School.
The horrific discovery prompted calls
for a national day of mourning and saw people
across Canada set up memorials. “As a dad, I
can’t imagine what it would feel like to have my
kids taken away from me, and as Prime Minister,
I am appalled by the shameful policy that
stole indigenous children from their communities,”
said Trudeau. “We promise concrete action,
and that’s how we’ll support survivors, families
and indigenous peoples. Sadly, this is not
an exception or an isolated incident. We’re not
going to hide from that. We have to acknowledge
the truth. Residential schools were a reality,
a tragedy that existed here, in our country,
and we have to own up to it,” the PM added.

Asian
Star
Sudha Krishnan
Native village/Country, parent’s
background
My parents hail from Tripunithura, Kerala, India
which is just east of the port city of Kochi.
We are Tamil speaking. Our ancestors hail
from Thanjavur. But most of our family was
born and raised in Kerala. That is why our
mother tongue is Tamil. But we speak
Malayalam as well.
Your early education
I was educated in Montreal, Canada — from
pre-school all the way to my post-secondary
education. I went to Harold Napper Elementary
school in Brossard — a city just south of
Montreal. I moved on to Centennial Regional
High School and Champlain Regional College
— where I graduated with honors in Pure and
Applied Health Sciences. I later obtained my
Bachelor’s in Journalism degree at Concordia
University — where I received the Gordon
Fisher Prize for Journalism. That was in 1999.
When & why you came to Canada?
I was born in Canada. My parents came here
decades ago to build a better life for their
children. That is me, my sister and my brother.
Your career advancement initiatives and
present occupation
I began my career as a journalist in the mid
90’s as a freelancer while pursuing my degree
in journalism. I was writing for the school
newspaper. I had volunteered for community
access television. And a year later, I got a parttime
job hosting a show on municipal affairs
for Montreal’s English-Speaking community.
I had a passion for covering issues affecting
visible minority women. My first piece
published in the Montreal Gazette was about
a support group for teenage moms in
Montreal. The group helped young mothers,
namely from the city’s African-Canadian
community or black community cope. After
the January Ice Storm in 1998, I had interned
at CTV National news in Montreal. Later in the
summer, I became a part-time reporter for the
local Montreal affiliate — CFCF (at the time).
It is now called CTV Montreal. My career took
me across the country —working at CBC
Montreal, Global Montreal — Global in Quebec
City, Global Regina. I worked in western
Canada for about 10 years — four years as an
anchor and reporter in Saskatchewan and then
6 years in Alberta as a legislative reporter for
Citytv in Edmonton and then host of OMNI
NEWS in Alberta — the South Asian Edition.
My career later moved me to OMNI in Toronto
where I co-hosted the South Asian Edition along
with Angie Seth. It was in 2012 that my career
took me back to my hometown of Montreal —
where I currently work at the CBC — mainly as
a reporter for TV, radio and web. Since February,
2021, I have been appointed as the last night
anchor for CBC Montreal News (weeknights at
11). One of my biggest achievements, I would
have to say would be giving a voice to people
who are marginalized. I still have a leaning to
covering stories affecting visible minority women.
Your regret in life
I really don’t have any regrets in life. Life is a
journey. Mistakes may have been made. But
mistakes or failures can be seen as opportunities
for growth. Setbacks make you stronger because
they provide valuable life lessons. You just have
to look back with perspective.
Pick you’re the best achievements
I had won two journalism awards. In 2010, out
of Edmonton, there I had won a Canadian Ethnic
Media Award for my piece on Suicide in the
South Asian Community. The piece tackled the
taboo of speaking about mental health and the
challenges of support for newcomers in Alberta
amid cuts at that time.
In 2012, I won the award for Health Reporting by
the Canadian Medical Association for Diabetes
in the South Asian Community.
It can be seen as achievements because my
work was recognized.
But I would also have to add that my career as a
South Indian Classical dancer and teacher has
helped me become the journalist what I am
today. That is mainly because of my mother.
She taught hundreds of South Asian youth the
art of Bharata Natyam — and with that a sense
of understanding and pride in our culture and
heritage. My career as a dancer brought me
confidence and strength as a journalist. And I
do spend my Sundays teaching this art to young
children, namely young girls. And hopefully, they
will develop a sense of confidence, strength and
work ethic to achieve anything in life.
Were you ever discriminated?
I don’t think I was ever refused a job because of
my skin color. But yes, I among many have
been called names at school like “P———”I
don’t like to spell it because it is so derogatory.
I have been picked on at school. There wasn’t
the kind of support or kind of anti-bullying
campaign we see now in schools. But I didn’t
let it upset me. I just pursued my studies and
my schoolmates were excellent students. Also
my parents brought me up with a strong sense
of pride in who I am. They always told me that
when people insult or hurt others or call names,
it is because they have insecurities and they
are unhappy with themselves. I have to admit,
in my career, I had been told I would have it
easier in Canada as a journalist because “I am
a woman and a visible minority.” I have to admit
that comment made me uncomfortable and
offended. That’s because, I have struggled in
this career like almost everybody else. The
media industry is tough - with layoffs after
layoffs. I will not apologize for news
organizations looking to hire people to reflect
the changing face of Canada. I think that is a
good thing. And my South Asian background
brings perspective to stories just like my other
colleagues of diverse backgrounds. I have faced
sexism — namely from our South Asian
community. I have been asked whether I want
a family or a career. When women can have
both or one or the other and that is their choice.
End of story. I think our community is progressing
in terms of how they view women and girls. And
that is a good thing. But career-driven women
can still be seen as intimidating in our
community. However, I have seen changes.
What you miss in Canada?
When I am outside Canada, I generally get an
appreciation for the country Canada wants to
be. That we can call ourselves Canadian, even
when I am wearing a sari and celebrating the
Kerala festival of Onam. I know our country is
being faced with these debates about culture
and identity and accommodation. But even
then, you do appreciate the freedom in Canada
that you have, especially when you live
elsewhere. The only thing I don’t like about North
America is people live to workrather than work
to live. In Europe and even in fast-paced India,
people do take time to enjoy what is important.
Family, friends and good food provide good life
essentials.
Are you happy in Canada?
I am very happy in Canada.
Why?
This is my home. I can have the best of so
many worlds here. I can proudly get involved in
our South Asian Community and at the same
time embrace so many other cultures. That is
what sets Canada apart from so many
countries. I don’t see myself as a hyphenated
English Page
Canadian. Because being Canadian means
you don’t have to abandon your roots.
Any comments on Canada’s weather
Out west I did not like the winters. I also found
they lasted too long. I prefer the weather in
Montreal. We really have 4 seasons here.
Any comments on Canada’s culture
I think Canada’s culture is often taken for
granted. There is so much to be proud of. In
fact, the recent death of a great Canadian Icon,
Gord Downie, made me think of that. His
poetry, his music took us across this great
country of ours. We have a lot of Canadian
talent - in fact, many of whom sought fame in
the U.S. And I am liking that we are seeing
more diverse names and faces on Canadian
television and in literature and theatre.
What brought you success in Canada?
My parents as I had explained. They worked
hard so I could focus on taking advantage of
the best that Canada has to offer.
Are you willing to help new comers?
Yes.
How?
As a journalist, I would like to share their stories
to point out issues that still need to be
addressed here. Also, I am willing to put them
in touch with community organizations that can
help them.
Your message for Canadians of Asian
origin
Canada is not perfect. But this is a country
where you can be whatever you want. Hard
work does pay off here. And you can have the
best of many worlds here.

Canada's new immigration
policy is good for India
Canada is some six
times larger than India,
its population is 35 million.
India has nearly
1.3 billion people. vast
tracts of Canada are
empty or thinly populated.
India is overcrowded.
even its foothills
and coastal areas
are filling up with humans.
one country is
bursting at the seams,
the other is starkly
empty!
The obvious choice for
Canada is to invite immigrants.
Over the decades,
Canada has
sought immigrants
mostly from Europe.
but it has largely been
a dream. Canadian
cold winters pose a
huge discouragement.
Europe has arelatively
moderate climate. So,
why immigrate to

prospective European
migrant.
Meanwhile, the Canadian
white population
has shrunk. The great
war slowed the population
growth. The postwar

swayed by the raging
philosophy: make
love, not war. the

spread like wild fire
across Europe and
north America. weeklong
open-air melas got
fashionable. drugs, liquor

became a badge of
social status. The play

to most white
young people, marriage
became a taboo,
an anachronism; to
have a family, a sin!
on the other hand, the

number was greater
than the kindergarten

Canada badly needs a

it is a welcome innovation.

hordes of foreign students
have arrived,
many from the Punjab.
not surprisingly, many
Indians with advanced
degrees from India opt
for this option as it ensures
Canadian citizenship.
India will eventually
reap benefits from this

that is an advantage for

Little of that money has
been spent so far, with
$27 million of those
funds still available to
help Indigenous communities
find and commemorate
lost children.
Bennett said the money
"will be distributed on an
urgent basis" in partnership
with the Winnipegbased
National Centre
for Truth and Reconciliation
and Indigenous
communities that are
interested in finding lost
children. During a debate
on the Kamloops
discovery in the House
of Commons Tuesday
night, Prime Minister
Justin Trudeau pledged
the support of the federal
government to help in
preserving grave sites
and uncovering potentially
more unmarked
burial grounds at other
former residential
schools. But he
stressed the need for
Indigenous communities
to decide for themselves
how they want to
proceed. Indigenous
Services Marc Miller echoed
that sentiment during
a press conference
Wednesday, saying Ottawa
is "walking at the
pace of communities."
"I know people are eager
to get answers about
what we will do nationally.
The reality is this is
something that will be
dictated to us by the
communities that are affected,"
he said.
Miller said the government
is intent on developing
culturally appropriate
protocols to
honour the lost children.
All eligible Albertans in for second
vaccine dose by end of June
(Continued Page...1)
Moderna can get Pfizer
for their second if
Moderna isn’t available.
Shandro said Alberta
Health Services will be
using an auto-call back
system to notify people
they vaccinated for their
first dose that they are
now eligible for a
second dose.
“Wherever possible,
pharmacists and
physicians will also call
or text or email their
patients to let them
know about eligibility as
well, however, you can
book an appointment at
any time starting on the
day you become
eligible,” he said.
As of Tuesday, more
than 63 per cent of
Albertans have received
their first dose of
COVID-19 vaccine while
10.4 per cent of
Albertans are fully
immunized with two
doses.
With the current plan, the
province expects all
Albertans will have their
second dose by the end
of summer, Kenney
said.
There were 209 new
cases of COVID-19
reported on Tuesday,
with 6,771 active cases.
Over the last 24 hours,
4,100 tests were
completed for a
positivity rate of 5.1 per
cent.
There are 438 people
currently hospitalized
with COVID-19, a
decrease of one. Of
those, 127 are in
intensive care units, a
decrease of six.
One more death was
reported, raising the
death toll to 2,228.
Alberta’s chief medical
officer of health Dr.
Deena Hinshaw said
due to the declining
number of new COVID-
19 cases, the province
is once again able to
test all positive cases for
variants.
“Because we are
screening all cases, we
may see the case
counts of these specific
variants begin to rise
even as our overall
cases fall,” Hinshaw
said. “Every case we
identify will help us track
and limit further
spread.”
Meanwhile, the province
entered Stage 1 of
reopening Tuesday,
permitting patios and
salons
to
reopen among the
eased restrictions.
If hospitalizations stay
below 500 and continue
to decline, Alberta will
proceed to Stage 2 on
June 10, which will allow
indoor venues such as
gyms and entertainment
facilities to reopen, as
well as up to 150 people
to attend outdoor
concerts and festivals.
Nearly all restrictions
are set to be removed
two weeks after 70 per
cent of Albertans over the
age of 12 have had one
shot. Kenney has said
he expects that to
happen by the end of
June or early July.
Shandro said second
doses are critical to
ensure the province
stays open.

Editorial
Cover priority groups
At least 20 doctors are dying
every day in the country due to Covid-
19 during the second wave, according
to the Indian Medical Association.
This alarming fact underlines the vulnerability
of healthcare workers who
are risking their lives daily in the line
of duty. This priority group was the first
to get the jab when the vaccination
programme was rolled out in mid-
January. However, universal coverage
of this high-risk category continues to
be a bridge too far in several states.
In Punjab, for instance, about 28 per
cent of the healthcare workers have
not even received the first dose. Unprotected
against the virus, they are
more prone to contracting the infection
and thus becoming a liability
rather than an asset to the authorities
which need all hands on deck to
handle the unprecedented emergency.
Right from the outset, Punjab
has been struggling to address vaccine
hesitancy among health personnel.
Despite the government’s repeated
warnings, some doctors and
other medical professionals have
stayed away from the inoculation
drive. Their reluctance to take the shot
has rubbed off on the masses. Ensuring
their compliance through a carrotand-stick
approach is a must to give
a fillip to overall vaccination.
The inoculation drive has also
been impacted by the digital divide.
Though walk-in vaccination is now underway
for adults in the below-45 category,
there is no denying that preference
is being given to those who have
booked online appointments. It’s disturbing
to know that over 90 per cent
of the slots for vaccination (18-44 age
group) in the remote Dodra-Kwar area
of Shimla district have been booked
by outsiders as the locals are hampered
by lack of Internet connectivity.
A similar problem cropped up in
Lahaul and Spiti last week as tourists
from Delhi, Punjab and Rajasthan
grabbed half of the slots meant for
residents of the tribal district. Such irregularities
are worsening the situation
at a time when vaccine supplies
are already running low. The authorities
must remove the bottlenecks so
as to save as many lives as possible.
