FAMILY PROMISE METROWEST
formerly Metrowest Interfaith Hospitality Network
2011 Annual Report
In 2011:
v Our staff and volunteers served 16 families.
v Those families comprised 24 adults and 28 children.
v The average age of the children served was 7 years.
v The average length of stay was 69 days.
What Family Promise Metrowest Means to One Mom
Jan and her three children, James (14), Alex (11) and Jocelyn (6) have been with Family
Promise since September and are planning to move into their own place on April 1st. I sat
down with Jan to talk about what it’s been like for her family during their time in the program.
What has this program done for you and your family? Provided structure for my family, helped
me save money, provided for all my family’s needs. The program has really helped me out. It’s a shelter –
but, it’s more than an just a shelter to me, it’s a home away from home. You guys are wonderful.
What is special about FP volunteers? The volunteers love to help us with anything we need, even simple things like helping
carry our bags, fixing a plate for one of the kids. The volunteers read and play games with the kids, which gives the parents
a few minutes to relax, that’s always nice. Everyone is very nice, warm and welcoming. The volunteers care about us.
UU Society of Wellesley Hills
and Jan at the day center
As a parent, what do you think has been the toughest part for your kids? Moving from church
to church every week and having to wake up so early. But, at the same time, this has provided
us structure, which is a good thing.
What has been the biggest challenge for you? Not being in our own space. The time limits to
get everything done; showers, laundry all have to be done at certain times.
How has this experience changed you? Being here has helped me be a better person. It has
helped me to better understand my priorities and responsibilities. I have told myself that I will
never be in this situation again. I am going to work harder and make wiser choices in life,
especially for my kids. Having the structure of the program and the extra push from the
staff to make the right choices for myself and my kids has made me a stronger person.
I asked James what he learned from this experience and he said he learned that “real life is hard”. He also learned “to
save money instead of spending” and “that it’s always good to meet new people”. From a parent’s perspective, what do you
think James, Alex and Josie have learned from this experience? By living with other families, they have seen how different
people live and also realize that others are in the same situation that we are in. They have also learned how to be more
responsible. Before coming to Family Promise, I did everything for my kids. Being here I had to accept that I couldn’t do it
all. I needed them to take more responsibility to get themselves ready and to help with chores. Now, we all know we are
in this together and it can’t be one person doing it all. I have told the kids that when we move to our own place, we are
going to continue with the structure and routine that we have done here. I also told them we are going to make better
decisions in life as well as watch what we eat, have more respect for and appreciate one another and understand how
hard life can be.
Chair Chat – A note from our board chair
Hello friends, By working together, we have successfully offered another year of service to homeless
families. Together in service, we have fostered fellowship and strengthened our communities.
Knowing the importance of employment and the ability to earn a living income, we extended our
childcare services this year allowing guest parents to work, look for work and complete education
and skill development courses. Our service is making a difference. We could literally not do this
important work without you. Thank you for everything you do!
We made an important decision this year to change our name from the Metrowest Interfaith
Hospitality Network to Family Promise Metrowest. This decision was not taken lightly as the word
“Interfaith” is a witness to our ministry and central to the integrity of our mission. Family Promise
Metrowest is not a departure from this position as the new name continues to reflect our deep
commitment to families and the promise we make to serve others. We believe the name is easier
to remember and also connects us with the advocacy of the national parent organization, Family
Promise. We are one of 171 affiliates across the country and most have taken the name. Our new
name also reflects a broadening of our scope from temporary shelter and hospitality to mentoring,
job and life skills development and future transitional housing options.
The Family Promise Metrowest Board of Directors, staff and selected volunteers have now started
working on our initial Strategic Plan. The primary goal of this work is to set the roadmap for the next
3 – 5 years. A recent homelessness forum reinforced the value of permanent housing as the basis
for family stability and economic development. I am confident that our plan will
address this basic need and help us move families from homelessness to permanent homes.
Thank you again for sharing your talents and for your generosity. We look forward to your
support as we communicate and execute the plan.
Director’s Letter
Sincerely, Mike Donoghue, Board Chair
“How can we better serve our families?” It is the gathering of information for the Annual Report that
demands answers to that question. As we reflect on the previous year, we look more purposefully at
the needs of those we are serving, our accomplishments and the areas in need of improvement.
The fall of 2011 ushered in the beginning of our fourth year of service. Over the first three years, we
built a strong foundation and we expanded on that foundation in many ways throughout the year.
Below are some highlights:
• Established a child care fund for our guests
• Increased our space at the day center for our families
• Implemented a new database to accommodate our increasing needs
• Increased the number of our network congregations, volunteers and donors
• Host congregations overcame the hurdles imposed by new state regulations
• Hired a Community Development Coordinator to help increase awareness
of our program in the community
In 2011, we also began the design of our new website and the discussion regarding a name change
for our Organization, both of which are now fully implemented. As a result of these accomplishments,
Family Promise Metrowest is poised to increase its ability to meet the needs of those we
currently serve as well as the potential to expand that assistance to others in need in our community.
What are the needs? We found the biggest barrier to our families’ success was the lack of education
and employable skills. The second most common barrier was the lack of affordable housing,
which is why we see a growing number of our families moving in with a friend or extended family
rather than “independent housing”. In addition, affordable child care continues to be a challenge
for our guests. I believe in the next 3 to 5 years, it is possible and necessary for Family Promise
Metrowest to expand its services to include increased education, employment, child care and
housing opportunities for families in need. The how and when are yet to be determined.
The why is evident in the face of every child who comes through our door.
With Much Appreciation, Beth Cooper, Director
What Family Promise Metrowest Means to One Mom
(continued from page one)
What do you want to say to the volunteers? I would like to give them all a big hug and kiss
and thank them for all they have done for me and my family. I truly appreciate everything.
I have never seen so many people who care about those they know nothing about, where
they’re from or what situation they’re in. The volunteers offer their time and provide everything
needed to help my family, and everyone continues to come through for us. Not only have
the volunteers provided us shelter, food and comfort, but they are providing us what we
need for our new apartment. I am at a loss for words to express how thankful we are to feel
so loved and cared about. We have been here for 6 months and Josie still doesn’t realize
we live in a shelter. She tells people we “live in God’s house”. That says a lot about the
volunteers. Once settled in our new place, I want to come and give back.
FAMILY PROMISE METROWEST — 2011 Annual Report
Visit Our
NEW Website!
www.familypromisemetrowest.org
After three years of operation, we decided it was time to
update our website to one that truly captures the essence of
the program, our guests and volunteers. I think you will agree,
we succeeded in doing just that. Many thanks to our web
designer, Sue Harman of Grassroot Studios for her dedication
to the project. Please browse through all the photos and
information at www.familypromisemetrowest.org.
Our Current Families:
Joana, Yaiki (9) and Kayden (3) have stayed at all of our host congregations during
the 8 months they have lived at Family Promise Metrowest. They have met many,
many volunteers. Joana’s first response when asked about her thoughts on the program,
“I want to give back for everything the volunteers and staff have done for me.
The program is amazing.” Joana is excited about the improvement she sees in her
writing and math skills as a result of working with Family Promise volunteers, Claire,
a member of St. Mary’s Church in Holliston and Ann, a member of Congregation
Or Atid in Wayland.
Joana is also thankful to Marcia, Assistant Director, for helping her work with the
school to coordinate the additional assistance and supports Yaiki needs to be
successful academically and for Yaiki’s tutor, Family Promise volunteer Celeste,
member of Christ Lutheran Church in Natick.
LaDawn and Matthew
Joana, Yaiki and Kayden
When asked about Kayden, Joana replies affectionately, “What can I say about
my little monster?”, and then speaks with pride about Kayden’s progress report from
his Headstart teachers. “At school Kayden is listening and talking more, he has really
improved. The teachers say his is one of the more responsible children with projects
at school.”
Joana continues to work full-time. Her goals for the future? “My GED is most
important. I am also working to save for a car and a place to call home.”
LaDawn and Matthew (6) have been with Family Promise for almost 3 months
and in that short time LaDawn has secured a full time job as a medical assistant in
Framingham. Congratulations LaDawn!
Matthew is in first grade and loves his video games!
