Andrea Ehret is an 

abstract expressionist 

from Slovak, The Czech 

Republic. Abstract 

Expressionism takes 

inspiration from surrealism and 

delivers the thought that art ought 

to be created by spontaneous and 

subconscious creation. Instead 

of designing out, sketching and 

rendering a piece, the creative 

person follows the flow of the 

openness of their minds to create. 

Her art shows how colors affect mood 

and thought. She follows the trends 

of the latest abstract art, abstract 

expressionism, Chinese calligraphy, 

and contemporary Chinese painting. 

“Structures are layered with my 

internal charges, depicting longing, 

anger, frustration, softness, wanting 

and more. My paintings are my 

world, my dreams, my visions and 

my circles. I hope when one looks 

at my paintings, they do not see 

circles, compositions and colors. 

They see life, their story; something 

that will stay with them for a while. 

I invite my viewers for the spiritual 

voyage, where everything is possible 

and perfect harmony exists”, she 

says. The idea is to share a part of 

herself with everyone who views the 

paintings. 

Staying true to one self is most 

required. A person who is true to 

themselves puts in maximum effort 

to the works they do which reflects 

in the artistry. The Instagram handle 

@andreacircles is brimming with 

aesthetically pleasing artistry which

During the novel corona virus pandemic, she started an intimate 

collection for the year 2020. Her message to the fellow artists is 

“spend as many hours in your studio as you can. 

the moment is the motto she abides 

by. Her favorite artist is Zao Wou Ki 

who is an abstract expressionist from 

People’s Republic of China. “I have 

always been a hard-working artist 

with a great ability to experiment 

towards spontaneous techniques 

and authentic outcome”, she says. 

Franz Kafka once said, “I am 

constantly trying to communicate 

something incommunicable, to 

explain something inexplicable, and 

to tell about something I only feel 

in my bones and which can only 

be experienced in those bones.” 

Her message to the fellow artists

messages. William C. Seitz, an 

artist and historian said, “Abstract 

expressionist value expression 

over perfection, vitality over finish, 

fluctuation over repose, the unknown 

over the known, the veiled over the 

clear, the individual over society and 

the inner over the outer.”

Art isn't just an image on 

a wall or in a museum. 

It could be a song you 

just heard, a video you 

watched, or a dance 

performance you saw. All sorts of art 

grasps you in numerous ways and 

builds your thoughts. Since the start of 

time, artists have labored extensively 

to seek out innovative ways to convey 

sentiments, passion, and feeling. 

Jason Anderson is an artist who 

specializes in Abstract Impressionism. 

Like most artists, his first step 

into the world of art was through figurative 

work. After realizing the deep 

interest in art, he practiced constantly. 

As he progressed, his art shifted from 

figurative work to impressionism and 

eventually ended up in abstraction. It 

was the pandemic that resulted in the 

development of a huge social media 

presence. His artworks are portrayed 

on the Instagram handle @jasonandersonart, 

which has more than 

300,000 plus followers. 

Jason art career began with a 

stained-glass apprenticeship, during 

which he was lucky enough to work on 

Jason Anderson is an artist who specializes 

in Abstract Impressionism. Like most artists, 

his first step into the world of art was through 

figurative work. After realizing the deep 

interest in art, he practiced constantly 


estoration projects such as York Minster, 

Gloucester and Wells Cathedrals. 

He quickly progressed onto design 

work which taught him to compose 

and stylize subject matter around a 

'jigsaw' of painted glass which is an 

approach which still drives his work 

today. And from the gothic stained 

glass today Jason Anderson has 

moved on to album covers. In fact, in 

2019 he created the cover of Billie Eilish’s 

single “Everything I Wanted”. 

Being fascinated by color, Jason 

works with a strong palette to create 

deep impasto effects with paint. He relishes 

the nature of mixing and arranging 

the paint in thick impressionistic 

daubs and produces a kaleidoscope 

of shape and tone which portrays the 

ever-present movement and energy 

found in nature. This approach creates 

a painting which, like the landscape, 

is constantly changing. So, as you 

move around the room and the ridges 

of paint catch the light, there is always 

something new to see. 

The coastline of Dorset in South 

West UK where he lives is his greatest 

inspiration for his pieces. Jason 

idolizes J.M.W Turner. Tuner once 

said "I have no secret but hard work. 

This is a secret that many never learn, 

and they don't succeed because they 

don't learn it. Labor is the genius that 

changes the world from ugliness to 

beauty and the great curse to a great 

blessing". He also considers Gustav 

Klimt as one of his greatest idols. 

Jason message to fellow artists is to 

work hard and be brave enough to 

develop what is inside. 

Telling stories and making an 

attempt to unlock the minds of individuals 

is what art is all about. Art touches 

and affects people in distinctive 

ways and every individual may have a 

completely different view of the same 

piece of artwork.

A bulletproof glass protects the most 

stolen artwork Ghent Altarpiece 

Jan van Eyck was a 

genius who has been 

astonishing the world 

for more than five 

centuries with his 

innovative techniques 

Hubert and Jan van Eyck’s 

Adoration of the Mystic 

Lamb, also known as the 

Ghent Altarpiece, one 

of the world’s greatest 

masterpieces, and surely the most 

stolen piece of art of all time, has a 

new €30m (£26m) glass-case home. 

The 20-foot-tall case boasts 

bulletproof glass and a 1,000 

square-foot climate controlled 

interior. The painting was moved 

from the cathedral’s Vijd Chapel 

to the Sacrament chapel, where, 

it will hang from pneumatically 

controlled steel supports above an 

altar. Meanwhile, extra large security 

doors have been installed nearby, in 

case of an emergency. 

It includes an improved visitor 

experience and better climatic 

conditions for the work, which has 

been meticulously restored to its 

former glory over the last seven 

years. The indoor temperature in the 

unheated cathedral drops to 2C in 

winter and the cathedral is at times 

filled with sunlight via its coloured, 

stained glass windows. 

During its 588-year history, the 

Ghent Altarpiece has been nearly 

burned by rioting Calvinists, stolen 

by Napoleon for the Louvre in 

Paris, cut in half after falling into 

the hands of the King of Prussia, 

coveted by Hermann Göring and 

taken by Adolf Hitler before being 

rescued by a team of commando 

double-agents from an Austrian salt 

mine where it was destined to be 

blown apart with dynamite. One of 

its 12 panels remains missing after 

a daring heist on the evening of 10 

April 1934, which has since baffled 

police detectives, bemused amateur 

sleuths and driven to despair the 

Nazi agents ordered by Goebbels to 

find it as a gift for the German Führer. 

To allow access to visitors, while 

maintaining high security, there 

has been significant demolition and 

redesign of some of the cathedral’s 

ancient stone walls, which accounts 

for the significant bill footed by 

the Flemish government and 

other sponsors. The high-security 

translucent glass case itself cost 

€5m. 

Due to Covid restrictions visitors 

will be invited to book a viewing of 

the masterpiece from 29 March. “Jan 

van Eyck was a genius who has 

been astonishing the world for more 

than five centuries with his innovative 

techniques,” Jambon said. “Both 

the magnificent restoration and the 

circumstances in which the Ghent 

Altarpiece can now be admired are 

astonishing. It confronts us with 

human’s eternal quest for mystery,” 

he continued. “I am convinced that 

many people will find personal 

resonance here.”

I've made a conscious decision to spend time with art, work hard 

on it, learn from it, and grow alongside it, says Beau B. Frank

Everyone strives for different things 

in life be it physical, personal, 

professional, mental or emotional. 

They all require some focus, some 

change and some disciplined and 

honest self-reflection and action on our part. In 

that journey of striving, the key thing is to let go 

of getting it perfectly right. Instead, give it your 

best and you can finish your day fulfilled 

and wake up refreshed the next day 

to do just that much or may be even 

better. Celebrate every success and 

failure along the way, as long as you 

get up, keep trying and keep making 

progress. 

Beau Bernier Frank is a French- 

American oil painter based out of Big 

Sur, California. Since graduating from 

high school in 2011, Beau has pursued 

a life of traveling and adventure. He spent 

the last 6 years exploring all the various 

aspects of life and recently came to the 

conclusion that art was something 

he really enjoyed. Art, for him, 

is something he could envision 

playing a larger role in both his 

life and others. His trips abroad 

have inspired him to return to his 

artistic roots. 

When asked what is purpose of art in his life, Beau 

says, “I do these things for me. I share what I do because 

it helps me understand and find meaning to my world. 

This allows me to connect with a larger audience. 

However, no one is going to care about me as much 

as I do. So, I've taken the initiative to pursue my 

creativity, listen to my gut, contemplate my 

possibilities and try my best to make my 

goals a reality”. 

His series “Off The Grid” features 

a combination of black and white 

portraits with colorful landscapes 

highlighting places from his 

surrounding area as well as places 

he has travelled to. The need to 

capture the feelings of longing 

and nostalgia around the places 

are mirrored through the various 

destinations featured in each of his 

works. 

His artistic process involves 

organizing his days and catering to 

the art so that he can spend as much 

time in his studio while honoring his 

duties to family, friends, health, and 

other pursuits. He photographs the 

work he is creating, shares the work 

in progress and documents 

the arc of a painting

be painful to recognize but also a 

reminder to return to one’s roots.

Bridge each day on the way to work. 

In many ways, it felt like crossing a 

threshold of sorts from being in society 

with its street lamps and grocery 

stores to the untouched wilderness of 

the Central Coast. To some, it’s a place 

of escape, possibly a way to reconnect 

with their inner selves on a journey into 

the unknown, or in any case, a stop on 

the map for a weekend getaway. No 

matter the inclination, a unifying truth 

can be agreed upon thanks to the 

remarkable landscape of Big Sur, true 

beauty exists. 

"Mr. Bixby" is a tribute to the state 

of mind that washes over when one 

crosses Bixby Bridge, and steps 

into the land of redwood forests, 

limestone mountains, and hidden 

beaches. Beau says, “I want creatives 

to see the ins and outs of the beautiful 

but challenging process of pursing an 

interest and making it a part of a daily 

routine. To not fall in love with the final 

product but the steps in between that 

made it all possible”.

Gulf Craft, one of the world’s

the world premiere of its flagship 

superyacht, Majesty 175. Sheikh 

Mansoor bin Mohammed bin 

Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai 

Sports Council, unveiled the superyacht on 

Sunday, 23 April, 2021. Fully made in the UAE, 

Majesty 175 was on show for the public for 

the first time at Dubai Harbour and has awed 

the yachting world with its innovative design, 

engineering, and operational excellence. 

The event was organised in partnership with 

the Dubai Department of Tourism & Commerce 

Marketing (Dubai Tourism) underlining Dubai 

and the UAE’s appeal as a yachting destination. 

The Majesty 175 will soon venture on voyages 

across the world, taking the UAE flag to global 

yacht events, marinas, and exotic destinations, 

putting the country prominently on the world 

yachting map. 

The Majesty 175 project has been underway 

for four years and has garnered the interest of 

the global yachting community since she was 

announced at the Monaco Yacht Show in 2016. 

At a length of 54 metres and a beam of 9.6 

metres, the Majesty 175 is Gulf Craft’s largest 

yacht to date and cements the shipyard and 

the UAE’s position as a leader on the global 

superyacht stage.

Abdulla Al Abdouli, 

the Chief Executive Officer of Marjan, 

the master-developer of freehold properties in Ras Al Khaimah, an 

experienced architect, urban planning expert and an inspiring Emirati 

leader focused on promoting a culture of entrepreneurship, innovation 

and facilitating strategic foreign investments. 


How did your journey as a professional 

begin? 

After my Masters in Regional & Urban 

Planning from the Paris Sorbonne University 

in Abu Dhabi, I started my career as a Director 

of Project Management Office with the Ras Al Khaimah 

Municipality. Subsequently, I earned a certificate in Real 

Estate Investment Strategies from Harvard University. 

For more than 13 years, I worked in the construction 

Industry in both public & private sectors driving strategic 

growth initiatives of the real estate sector in the emirate 

of Ras Al Khaimah. My focus has been on developing 

integrated master-planned communities, world-class 

facilities & infrastructure projects in Ras Al Khaimah that 

will attract foreign investment and position the emirate as a 

regional investment and tourism hub. 

Today as CEO of Marjan, my role is to identify new 

opportunities for real estate growth, and expand economic

How do you see the real-estate market of the UAE in 

the near future? 

We are already witnessing a return in market confidence 

boost by the UAE developer, and ambition plans by the

support Ras Al Khaimah’s economic diversification, we 

have achieved impressive benchmarks in the past years. 

These have also contributed to positioning Ras Al Khaimah

– inspired and guided by the vision of our leadership. Our 

outlook is that alongside the positive traction gained by the 

UAE’s real estate sector, Ras Al Khaimah will record further

What impact could Expo 2020 bring in the real-estate 

segment of the UAE? 

Expo 2020 would definitely have a strong impact on the 

real estate sector as more people from around the world 

visit the nation and experience the world-class infrastructure 

and investment opportunities that the UAE offers. With 

Expo 2020, international visitors will have the opportunity to 

witness the economic and living environment of the country. 

Would you like to mention any specific exciting project 

or plan that you are working on currently? 

Al Marjan Island, the flagship development by Marjan, is 

already a thriving lifestyle destination. We are continuously 

enhancing the offering at Al Marjan Island, a project that 

has been developed under the visionary guidance of His 

Highness Sheikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Member of the 

Supreme Council and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah. Our current 

focus is to add 2,400 hotel, residential and mixed-use units 



by 2025, and several of them are under design review or in 

different stages of completion. 

We aim to add three new hotels in 2021 which will include 

the Hampton By Hilton Marjan Island, a 4-star resort with 

a private beach area with 515 rooms; the Radisson Resort 

Marjan Island with 400 keys, and Mövenpick Resort Al 

Marjan Island with 418 rooms. 

What do you find as the biggest challenge in your 

business and how do you work towards overcoming it? 

The challenges of late have been related to the 

COVID-19 pandemic. But our nation and leadership took 

decisive measures to address it. In addition to offering 

financial stimulus packages and supporting the hospitality 

industry, Ras Al Khaimah took several 

concerted steps which enabled the 

emirate to be the first city to be certified 

as ‘Safe’ by Bureau Veritas. Named 

the GCC Tourism Capital, the emirate 

is also the first to receive the World 

Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) 

Safe Travels Stamp. By following all 

protocols, we continued to focus on 

infrastructure development. 

So, the key has been to continue 

to focus on our priorities, ensure that 

safety protocols are met and focus 

on our larger goals – to position Ras 

Al Khaimah as a leading regional 

tourism and investment hub. 

How do you define success? 

We have 2 tires of success. First success is the sense of 

pride when we accomplish our milestones as a team despite 

the global challenges we face and to watch our talented 

young people emerge as accomplished professionals. 

Second tire is the success of the developer operating on 

our project such as Al Marjan Island and crossing strongly 

through all the challenges and posting positive results. 

If you have one piece of advice for anyone who is 

starting out in their career what would it be? 

Keep up the hard work, take criticism and turn it into 

opportunity to improve, and everything you are doing today 

will stand for you in good stead in years to come.

For the vibrant artist Anjini P. Laitu, 

this quote stands true. Even at the 

age of 80, his passion for art inspires 

us. Being extremely fond of art since 

a very young age, he always wanted 

to be a painter. But, back in those 

days, art was not considered as a 

secure career path due to which he 

had to drop that dream. 

He came to the UAE in 1995 and 

worked in a Glass Company in 

Dubai. But, the vacuum for not being 

able to do anything in art remained 

deep in his heart. So, after almost 

four decades of professional career 

he decided to add more colors to his 

life and restarted his artistic journey. 

To this day, he paints for 3-4 hours 

every day. 

When asked what art means 

to him, Laitu says, “Art is not my 

livelihood. I wish that the colors of 

my canvas touch the hearts of each 

and every art lover without much of 

financial compulsions. I believe in 

total freedom when it comes to art 

and try to get connected through the 

human heart”. 

He is a member of the prestigious 

Emirates Fine Art Society, where he 

has exhibited his work apart from 

many solo and group shows in UAE 

and India and has also exhibited in 

World Art Dubai four times with his 

own stand. 

He has also done and exhibited 

lots of painting works on fabric, 

porcelain and canvas. His paintings 

which he calls ‘colors’, are generated 

from the vibrations of positive energy 

which he enjoys while painting and 

wishes to pass it on to masses. He 

enjoys beauty in simplicity of colors 

and celebrates their calmness which 

continuously vibrates in his mind 

when he paints. 

Laitu’s passion for art makes us 

realize that there is no age to learn 

and follow your dreams. All you need 

is a will to do it!

The IPM gathered more than 370 

delegates from 173 countries to 

discuss the final preparations for what 

will be the first event of this scale to

communicate anything at all. It can just be the medium 

of beauty for aesthetic purposes. Jenny Nguyen is one 

artist who believes in this saying. She is a well-known 

Vietnamese artist based in the United States of America, 

specializes in illustrations.

Works by around 20 artists, including 

Hank Willis Thomas, Gordon Matta

and Andrea Bowers will be featured 

in the exhibition. The show will be 

viewable on the fair’s website, with no 

ticket or log-in required. 

The art fair is being organized by 

Daniel S. Palmer, who now serves 

as curator for New York’s Public Art 

Fund. The exhibition is inspired by 

an essay by the author Arundhati 

Roy published last April in the 

Financial Times considering how 

the coronavirus pandemic might be 

viewed as an opportunity to break 

with the past and imagine a more 

equitable society. 

Javits Center, a convention space 

where thousands of people are 

currently being vaccinated daily for 

the Covid-19 virus, is planned to 

be the venue for the exhibition. The 

decision to shift this year’s fair from 

March to September was announced 

before the pandemic hit. 

The Pandemic is a Portal will be 

followed by an exhibition curated by 

César García-Alvarez, founder and 

director of The Mistake Room in Los 

Angeles. 




Humanoid Robot Sophia sells self 

portraits in NFT for almost $700K 

The portrait, titled 

“Sophia Instantiation,” 

was created in 

collaboration with 

Andrea Bonaceto, an 

artist and partner at 

blockchain investment 

firm Eterna Capital. 

Digital artwork created by 

a robot is the latest to 

add to the buzz around 

non-fungible tokens 

(NFTs) on the internet. 

Humanoid robot Sophia, which 

was created by Hong Kong-based 

Hanson Robotics, sold a self-portrait 

of itself for a whopping $688,888. 

The work, which saw Sophia 

“interpret” a depiction of her own 

face, was offered as a non-fungible 

token, or NFT, an encrypted digital 

signature that has revolutionized the 

art market in recent months. 

The portrait, titled “Sophia 

Instantiation,” was created in 

collaboration with Andrea Bonaceto, 

an artist and partner at blockchain 

investment firm Eterna Capital. 

Bonaceto began the process by 

producing a brightly colored portrait 

of Sophia, which was processed by 

the robot’s neural networks. Sophia 

then painted an interpretation of the 

image. 

The artwork includes a 12-second 

MP4 file that shows the transformation 

of Bonaceto’s painting into a digital 

painting. The auction also includes 

physical artwork of the painting made 

by the advanced artificial intelligence 

(AI). The buyer is another digital 

artist, known only as 888. 

The act of painting was “based 

completely on decisions she made 

without any human assistance,” 

according to Nifty Gateway, the NFT 

marketplace that facilitated the sale. 

Sophia is amongst the most 

advanced humanoid robots in the 

world, unveiled first in 2016. The 

robot has interviewed Germany’s 

chancellor Angela Merkel and 

appeared at the New York Fashion 

Week. It has also performed a duet 

with The Tonight Show host Jimmy 

Fallon in the past.

Peter Doig, born on 17 April 

1959, is a contemporary 

Scottish artist, celebrated 

as one of the most 

important representational 

painters working today. White Canoe, 

one of his amazing paintings sold at 

Sotheby's for $11.3 million in 2007 

in an auction record for a living 

European artist. The architect home 

in the Ravine, another one of his 

creations, sold for $12 million at a 

London auction in the year 2013. 

"There exists a tension," Peter Doig 

said explaining his work, "….between 

the often-generic representation of a 

ministerial scene and the investment 

in my very own experiences of the 

landscape. All of the paintings have 

a component of life in them; however, 

I resist creating the autobiographical 

readings to a fault specific". Doig 

draws on personal memories from 

his childhood in Canada, as well as 

imagery sourced from photographs 

and films. Operating steadily since 

the 1980s, he had faithfully devoted 

himself to creating landscapes 

touched with the history and memory 

of those places, he had visited. 

Christopher Wool is 

one of the leading 

and most prestigious 

American painters of 

his generation. He 

was born in 1955, and grew up in 

Chicago, and moved to New York 

town in the early 1970s. Since 

establishing himself as a creative 

person in the 1980s, Wool’s artistic 

output incorporates photography, 

sculpture, artist books, and 

printmaking. Christopher Wool 

is best known for his paintings 

of large, black, stenciled letters 

on white canvases, but he 

possesses a wide range of 

styles; using a combined array 

of painterly techniques, including 

spray painting, hand painting, 

and screen-printing, he provides 

tension between painting and 

erasing, gesture and removal, 

depth and flatness.

Yoshitomo Nara, born 

on December 5, 1959 in 

Hirosaki, Japan, studied 

at the Aichi Prefectural 

University of Fine Arts 

and Music, where he earned both 

his BFA and MFA, and later at 

the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf 

during the late 1980s. He currently 

lives and works in Tokyo. He is a 

Japanese artist best known for his 

paintings of children and animals 

that appear simultaneously sweet 

and sinister, as seen in his work Do 

Not Disturb! (1996). Nara has been 

influenced by popular culture in both 

Eastern and Western society. His 

versatile practice explores themes 

of isolation, rebellion, and spirituality 

through printmaking, painting, 

sculpture, ceramics, and installations. 

Rudolph Stingel, born 

in 1956 in Merano, 

Italy, is a contemporary 

Italian Conceptual artist. 

Employing wide-ranging 

materials such as rubber, carpet, 

painted aluminum, Styrofoam, and 

paint. He first came to prominence in 

the late 1980s for his silver paintings 

mixed with various primary colors. 

Through his tutorial pictures and 

installations, his work explores the 

essence of creating, gesture, and 

expression through questioning 

believability and authorship. In the 

early 1990s, Stingel began testing the 

relationship between painting and 

the spaces where they are shown, 

developing a series of installations 

that covered the walls and floors 

with monochrome carpets—thereby 

allowing the architecture itself to act 

as a painting.

George Condo was 

born in Concord, New 

Hampshire in 1957. He 

attended the University 

of Massachusetts, in 

Lowell, where he studied Music 

Theory and Art History. A member 

of the band The Girls during the 

late 1970s, Condo met Jean-Michel 

Basquiat in New York at a show. It was 

Basquiat that suggested he moves 

down to New York to pursue a career 

in art. He is a contemporary American 

artist known for his unique figurative 

paintings and prints. Condo’s first 

public exhibitions were held in East 

Village galleries between 1981 and 

1983. In 2010, Condo collaborated 

with the musician Kanye West in 

producing cover art for his album My 

Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.

Adrian Ghenie, born 

on August 13, 1977, in 

Baia Mare, Romania, 

graduated in 2001 from 

the University of Art 

and Design in Cluj. He went on to 

co-found Galeria Plan B in Cluj, an 

exhibition space which first opened 

in 2005 and later expanded to Berlin. 

Ghenie paints with a palette knife 

and stencils, and often chooses to 

depict important figures from history, 

notably including a series of portraits 

of Charles Darwin. His best-known 

painting, The Fake Rothko (2010), 

depicts a man retching beside a 

Rothko painting propped up against 

a wall. Ghenie has had exhibitions 

at the Tate Liverpool and the San 

Francisco Museum of Modern Art, 

as well as a solo exhibition at Pace 

London. 

Takashi Murakami, born on 

February 1, 1962 in Tokyo, 

Japan, where he continues 

to live and work, has a 

Ph.D. in nihonga painting. 

He combines the foremost cuttingedge 

techniques with the preciseness 

and skill of ancient Japanese art. He 

is known for blurring the boundary 

between fine and commercial art. 

Often categorized alongside historic 

and contemporary artists working in 

the tradition of Pop Art, Murakami's 

work has achieved a widespread 

level of fame beyond the art world. 

His innovative “Superflat” aesthetic— 

combining classical Japanese art 

with contemporary Japanese pop

Albert Oehlen, born on 

September 17, 1954 in 

Krefeld, Germany, studied 

under Sigmar Polke at the 

Hochschule für Bildende 

Künste. He graduated in 1978 and 

received his first solo show in 1981 at 

Galerie Max Hetzler in Berlin. He is an 

influential modern painter operating 

in an eclectic variety of techniques 

and mental imagery. Curious about 

exploring the medium as a genre, his 

paintings have cycled continuously from 

abstraction to realism, typically serving 

as a parody or imitation of ancient 

painting models. Today, Oehlen’s 

works are held in the collections of The 

Museum of Modern Art in New York, the 

Musée d’Art Moderne et Contemporain 

in Strasbourg, and the Cleveland 

Museum of Art, among others. 

Mark Grotjahn, born in 

1968 in Pasadena, CA, 

attended the University 

of Colorado Boulder 

and later received an 

MFA from the University of California 

Berkeley. He is an American 

artist best known for his abstract 

paintings which strike a complex 

dialogue with the work of Russian 

Constructivist Kazimir Malevich, 

Color Field painter Barnett Newman, 

and Op Art painter Bridget Riley. 

He has developed a practice that 

merges abstraction and figuration, 

and geometry and gesture. In 2008, 

he was the subject of the critically 

acclaimed solo exhibition “Dancing 

Black Butterflies” at the Gagosian 

Gallery in New York. Grotjahn lives 

and works in Los Angeles, CA.

Ancient Roman Sculpture discovered in 

Belgian Antiques Shop 

Two Italian policemen 

stumbled upon a 

surprising find in a 

neighbourhood in 

Brussels – a looted 

ancient Roman sculpture, posed 

innocently among the offerings at an 

antiques shop. 

The Carabineri, Italy’s police force, 

said it had officially recovered the 

sculpture, which dates back to the 

1st century C.E. and is believed to 

have been stolen around 2011 from 

an archaeological site near Rome.

involved in exporting the statue out 

of Italy. 

The Carabinieri’s art squad has 

regularly helped locate stolen art 

objects of all kinds. Most recently, it 

aided in finding a Nicolas Poussin 

painting that was looted by the Nazis 

during World War II; that work was 

subsequently returned to the owners’ 

heirs. The vaunted art squad is at the 

center of a new book by art historian 

Fiona Greenland focused on the role 

it plays in Italian politics.

Saudi Arabia gears up for its first art 

biennale, Ad-Diriyah Biennale 

Ad-Diriyah Biennale is all 

set to be Saudi Arabia’s 

first art biennale which 

will begin later this year. 

The art event will bring 

together more than 70 regional and 

international artists to Saudi Arabia. 

Ad-Diriyah Biennale will inaugurate 

on 7 December 2021 and will run 

till 7 March 2022. The three month 

event will be held under the theme of 

Feeling the Stones, inspired by the 

slogan “crossing the river by feeling 

the stones” coined by Chinese 

politician Deng Xiaoping during 

the 1980s as a metaphor for action 

at a time of social and economic 

transformation. 

“We hope that this exhibition will 

expose new generations of viewers 

to global contemporary art, not just 

as a mode of visual expression 

but as a space for critical thinking,” 

the biennale’s curator Philip Tinari, 

who is also the director and chief 

executive of the UCCA Centre for 

Contemporary Art in Beijing, said. 

The biennale will take place in a 

27,000-square-metre area located 

in the recently developed creative 

district of Jax in Diriyah. The 

exhibition will feature six sections 

and will examine themes that include 

memory and preservation, cultural 

transmission, social engagement, 

as well as the Anthropocene and the 

spiritual. 

The event aims to create new 

connections with the international 

art landscape, bringing new trends 

in global contemporary art to Saudi 

Arabia’s burgeoning cultural scene.

Saudi Arabian artist Shalimar Sharbatly 

showcases her Moving Art concept 

Shalimar Sharbatly, a 

Saudi-Arabian abstract 

artist, whose works of 

hand-painted sports 

cars have been shown at 

events such as the Paris Motor Show 

and Monaco Grand Prix, will create 

a new series for Jeddah’s Draw A 

Nation initiative. She will showcase 

a set of hand-painted vehicles, 

specifically old and abandoned cars 

that will be transformed into art 

pieces in public spaces. 

Sharbatly specializes in turning 

everyday objects, such as cars, into 

conceptual pieces. She is widely 

known for her “moving art” concepts, 

which are “intended to move art 

beyond the elitist walls of the gallery”, 

according to her website.

Spanish Museo del Prado, the art museum in Madrid,

French Musée du Louvre, official name Great Louvre

gallery of France, housed partially a large palace 

in Paris that was designed on the right-bank site of 

the 12th-century defensive structure of Philip Augustus. It is 

the world’s most-visited art museum, with a set that spans 

work from ancient civilizations to the mid-19th century. In 

1546 Francis I, who was an excellent art collector, had this 

recent castle demolished and commenced to create on its site 

another royal residence, the Louvre. Under Francis I, solely a

CAPITOLINE MUSEUMS, 

ROME, ITALY 

Italian Musei Capitolini, is the complex of art galleries 

on the Capitoline Hill in Rome. The gathering was 

initially supported in 1471 by Pope Sixtus IV, who 

donated statuary recovered from ancient ruins. It had 

been augmented by gifts from later popes and after 1870, by 

acquisitions from archeological sites on town property. The 

museum, opened to the general public in 1734, occupies parts

tonal differences in the image, and we 

use that effect to control and illustrate 

the image in question,” explains Giles 

Miller, the studio’s founder. 

Miller, who studied at London’s 

Royal College of Art, launched his 

studio in 2010, building it up after 

working on a commission for the 

Stella McCartney brand. Over the 

years, the studio has experimented 

with material and scale, producing 

site-specific designs and sculptural 

pieces. 

“Despite the evolution of the 

studio and our work, the concept 

of manipulating material to control 

reflection has been a constant in our 

methodology, and we still maintain

the same creative approach across 

projects of hugely varying scales, 

from jewellery to murals, and from 

sculpture to architecture,” Miller says. 

Miller says that for creating this 

portrait his team studied the way 

the light would reflect within the 

space and how visitors would move 

around the work. The portrait took a 

team of eight members who worked 

for three weeks to complete it. The 

focus of the piece is not simply how 

the discs have been assembled, 

but the dimensions of colour that 

reveal themselves depending on the 

viewer’s perspective. 

“By using reflection as a medium, 

there is inherent variation in 

the artwork depending on the 

surrounding light levels, the position 

of the viewer relative to the piece, 

and even the time of day or night it is 

viewed,” Miller says.

and responses that objects and events arouse within 

a person. 

He started The Gravity series which he did blind 

folded. Using the eye of the unconscious, The Gravity 

series, and part of a moment in the Connection 

series, were all the sketches made with the eyes of 

the unconscious. He did not allow himself to look at 

the screens; they were all created with eyes closed, 

considering only two things: the force of gravity pulling 

him towards the earth and the force of believing, the 

imaginary pulling him towards the sky, upwards. 

“My main element conceptually is what I call 

‘revealing the true feeling’. What do we hide among 

so many layers of our expressions and interactions 

with the world? I often delve into myself and others, 

watching, and our connections to these feelings”, 

he says. When he was thirteen, he started playing 

guitar and the need to create sensations and feelings 

were always there in him. Only the materials and 

shapes changed, but the need to create something 

magnificent has always been constant for him, the 

hustle and the obligation kept him going. 

His message to the fellow artists is "We only have 

today, and that no matter how hard it is to live in art 

in the world if you love art, do not waste any minute 

doing something that is not art." As the philosopher 

Marco Aurelio says, “we only have today, and we 

have to give the best and live the best today.” He

Although, what is considered 

pleasing to one’s eye might vary 

depending on the viewer, given 

the large choice of mediums and 

strategies for the style of art, there 

is probably going to be some kind of 

art that will charm each person.

the world is not all black and white”, says Mckenna Ely 

McKenna Ely is an 

American based 

artist who specializes 

in one of the most 

difficult and vibrant art 

categories, Resin Art. Being a resin 

artist is quite different from being a 

regular painter since the materials 

to create the art are completely 

different. Like a painter is educated 

about how to use their acrylic or oil 

paints, a resin artist’s true skill lies 

in how they choreograph the freeflowing 

resin on a canvas. 

The resin is fused with regular 

paint to create a beautifully chaotic 

yet synchronized array of colors 

and textures. As a result, a unique 

and duplicate-proof design is 

created. Through constant practice, 

patience, and mistakes, McKenna 

developed her career as a resin 

artist. 

According to her, art plays an 

important role in one’s life as it 

shows that the world is not all black 

and white. There are different ways

to understand a topic, different ways 

to view an image, and everyone 

sees things differently, and she 

thinks art really showcases that. 

When asked what makes her 

proud, she says that she is really 

proud of how far her business

pieces while scrolling, but your art 

is valid, no matter what anyone 

else says!” 

Her greatest inspiration 

is definitely nature, but 

more specifically the 

forest and the sea. 

Her favorite artist 

is Van Gogh, and 

as cliche as it is, 

he really is one of 

the painters that got 

her interested in art. 

One of his favorite 

saying is, “I dream 

my painting and I paint 

my dream.” 

Resin art could be considered as 

an unconventional style of painting 

since the usual acrylic or oil paints, 

brushes, or even an easel is not 

required. What you primarily need 

is an excellent understanding of 

resin, which is what you primarily 

use to create these unique art 

pieces and a lot of patience to wait 

for the perfect result.
