CAPE VINCENT

Where Lake

& River Meet

WELCOME TO OUR WORLD

Information on Cape Vincent is as close as your

browser. Click on www.capevincent.org and you’ll get

information on places to shop, restaurants, places to

stay, village services, marinas and lots of photos. If

you have questions email thecape@tds.net and we will

get right back to you.

Check us out

Home to Tibbetts Point Lighthouse

Cape Vincent is a classic little river town

in the 1000 Islands offering endless

views of both the St. Lawrence River

and Lake Ontario. Visitors can look

forward to unique shopping, dining,

lodging and recreational experiences

from Cedar Point to Snug Harbor.

Downtown Cape Vincent is a one mile

stretch along the river lined with a wonderfully

diverse set of businesses. From

pottery, jewelry, and self care products

– all handmade in Cape Vincent, to our

produce markets and art gallery, your

shopping bags will go home filled with

quality products.

We have a very distinct selection of

local craft beverages. Recently added

to the assortment is Cape Vincent’s

very own specialty coffee roasters,

found brewing at the cafe or by the

bag in local shops. At the center of

downtown the local brewery

has just expanded and now

offers a great dining experience

along with their

craft beer. A few minutes

from downtown is

our award winning

winery,

a great stop to make while visiting

Tibbetts Point Lighthouse or traversing

the lake and river side.

When you’re ready for a bite to eat you

can find seafood dishes and rice bowls;

specialty pizzas; fish fry, burger, taco

and prime rib nights – you will not go

hungry. Multiple locations offer takeout

and outdoor dining options to enjoy the

scenery.

Lodging options include everything from

inns and hotels – some historic, lake

and riverside cabins and cottages, to

seasonal rentals for all-summer vacationers.

Accommodations are available

at multiple establishments for year

round booking.

Along with our local marinas, docking

is available at East End Waterfront

Park, and the village dock at Esselstyne

Street. Cape Vincent is a wonderful

place to fish, boat, dive, hike, bike and

wander. With a 20-30 minute drive to

Clayton, Alexandria Bay, and Sackets

Harbor, Cape Vincent is perfectly located

to plan a day trip to all of your favorite

1000 Islands destinations.

Cape Vincent is fast becoming a place

where people like to live, as well as

spend their vacation. Excellent highways

are available to provide transportation

to Cape Vincent. When

traveling on Interstate 81, Exit 46 is

the most convenient exit to provide

you a direct route to “The Cape”.

When you reach your destination,

you can enjoy watching ships

from all over the world passing

through the clean blue waters of

the St. Lawrence River and Lake

Ontario.

Cape Vincent a Witness to History

Written by Dennis McCarthy, St. Lawrence Historical Foundation

Statically located on the South shore of St. Lawrence River were she

meets the headwaters at Lake Ontario, Cape Vincent has been a witness to

the military conflicts that defined both the United States and Canada.

During the French and Indian War, armies of both the Imperial French

and the British sailed by and stopped on the shores of Cape Vincent. In

1760, eleven thousand soldiers under British General Jeffery Amherst moved

past and camped near Cape Vincent on their epic journey to the Battle of Isle

Royal at present day Ogdensburg and their Conquest of Canada.

A few years later in 1777, a British Army would camp for several weeks

on Carleton Island under Col. Barry St. Ledger on their way to the Mohawk

Valley and the siege at Fort Stanwix (Rome NY).

The British found the

town of Cape Vincent’s

location to be so strategic

that it built a major

supply base at Fort

Haldimand on Carleton

Island in 1778. This

military base played an

important role in the

supply of the western

posts at Niagara and

Detroit. Several ships of

the line were built at the

naval yard at the head

of the Island.

During the

Revolutionary War,

many raids were

launched from the

base on Carleton

Island. Many notable

and notorious people

visited there including

Joseph Brant the

Indian chief, Walter

Butler the Tory

Commander and

Captain George McDougall, who was an ancestor of Hillary Clinton, to

name a few.

From the end of the Revolution to the beginning of the War of 1812, the

base at Carleton Island acted as a relocation point for British Loyalists from

the Mohawk Valley including Molly Brant and many others.

With the outbreak of the War of 1812, Cape Vincent became one of the

most exposed locations on the US and Canadian border. It was necessary to

have armed forces at Cape Vincent since the enemy had a large force nearby

at Kingston, Ontario, Canada.

The first combat of the War of 1812 took place in Cape Vincent in June

1812. Abner Hubbard, a Cape Vincent resident captured Fort Haldimand

on Carleton Island which was still occupied by the British even though the

island had been ceded to the US in 1796.

On several occasions in the summer of 1813 both Americans and British

soldiers and sailors came to conflict at the Village of Cape Vincent, then

known as Gravelly Point.

The history books tell of several attacks that took place in Cape Vincent

where soldiers fought to the death. There were ship landings, stores were

plundered, and barracks were burned.

For a few weeks in late 1813, an American Army of 10,000 under

General Wilkinson used Grenadier Island near Tibbetts Point as a staging

area for an invasion of Canada. The Army rowed a flotilla of 250 whale

boats down the St. Lawrence in early November. General Wilkinson briefly

stopped at Cape Vincent while the American Lake Ontario Fleet under

Commander Chauncey with over 1,000 sailors and 10 major war ships

sailed past to protect the exposed

army in transit. For a week while

the Army under Wilkinson moved,

the Fleet stayed at anchor off the

still formidable remains of Fort

Haldimand on Carleton Island to

prevent its being reoccupied.

With the end of the War of 1812

Cape Vincent moved to a period

of peaceful prosperity, growth and

commerce.

The Lighthouse, one of the oldest on the Great Lakes,

stands at the outlet of Lake Ontario and the head of

the St. Lawrence River. Officially in May 1981, the

Coast Guard left the Lighthouse. However, the Coast

Guard still administers the light tower with automation

operations coming from Oswego. Tibbetts Point has the

only operating Fresnel Lens on Lake Ontario.

Museum brilliantly displays the history of Cape Vincent in one of the

communities’ oldest buildings. This venerable stone structure was

used as a barracks to house soldiers during the War of 1812. Later

on, the Forsythe Brothers manufactured ironwork for sailing vessels

and cookstoves during its days as a foundry and machine shop. The

historic building has also served as the Town Office and the Chamber

of Commerce offices.

In May of 1992, the Museum was dedicated.
