Ajim Juxta

b. 1983, Malaysia

Bachelor of Science in Architecture, MARA University of Technology, Shah Alam, Malaysia

Better known in the Malaysian art scene as Ajim Juxta, Raja Azeem Idzham is a young multi-talented visual artist who’s

formal training is in architecture. After graduation Ajim worked as an architect for some three years, before coming to the

realization that his true calling was visual art, a realization that eventually lead him to make the decision to become a fulltime

artist.

His repertoire of works spans several mediums, including pen and ink, found-object sculptures, and paintings on canvas.

Like many architects-turned-artists, influences of architecture are apparent, particularly in Ajim’s use of lines and structures

in his artworks.

As an artist Ajim Juxta is not afraid to experiment with new media types, or explore new ways of using mediums he’s

already adept at. The training he had in architecture, however, has not gone to waste. This young artist’s artworks are akin

to organic blueprints created to make sense of a world seen as having gone wrong in many ways.

Ajim draws upon ideas of dystopian realities that many have ended up being in whilst in pursuit of personal utopias. In the

process of these pursuits, the important aspects of life that should rightly be the focus remain left by the wayside. The

artist sees the lives of these individuals as being neither here nor there, constantly in a state of discontent, yet lost as to

what fulfillment truly entails.

Dedy Sufriadi

b. 1976, Indonesia

Masters of Fine Art, Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI), Yogyakarta

Bachelor of Fine Art, Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI), Yogyakarta

One artist whose works never cease to amaze, and who features prominently in our presentation for OPPO Art Jakarta Visual

2020, is none other than Indonesian visual artist Dedy Sufriadi.

As an artist, Dedy is constantly experimenting with new approaches to creating art. The broad Hypertext grouping of works that

he is well-known for is one such example, where the use of text is deconstructed to become visual placeholders for the creation

of new ideas and insights in the mind’s eye of those viewing his artworks, rather than the traditional role of text as the conveyors

of static information.

The Burning Series, from which two artworks have been included, originate from Dedy’s own critical observations about media

freedom, using the physical act of burning (“membakar” in Bahasa Indonesia) used in creating the works as a metaphor. This

series, too, the result of Dedy’s experimentation earlier on in his career.

Often, naïve figurations are found within many of Dedy’s works, stemming from his observation of the natural and honest

way young children express themselves. These find their way onto his canvas works in an intuitive manner, often depicted in

unexpected contexts within his art.

In more recent times, the tussle between the innate intuition of an artist and the formalistic and logical demands of art-making

has become something that has driven Dedy, resulting in the Tabula Rasa series of pure abstract works, from which two artworks

have been selected in this collection of works.

His constant drive to experiment and his courage to do things differently are among the reasons that make Dedy Sufriadi a very

exciting and interesting artist, his works always a visual adventure and a feast for the eyes and mind.

Syahbandi Samat

b. 1992, Malaysia

Self-taught Artist

Drawing from personal experience and observation, the stupefying technical skills of young artist Syahbandi Samat, using

primarily ball-point pens, has been gaining wide attention from the Malaysian art community in recent years, particularly

since winning the 2011 cycle of the Malaysian Emerging Artist Award (MEAA), and more recently, the Young Guns Award

2016.

His keen interest in art began while still in secondary school, experimenting with various mediums before settling on using

the ballpoint pen, catalyzed by his discovery of artworks by Spanish artist and poet Juan Fransisco Casas.

His earlier works were portrayals of myths and fairy tales, through the artist’s own interpretive lens, at times twisted but

always presented with generous tinges of humor.

Since then his artistic creations have transitioned to become more introspective, projecting his own concerns and fears

into surrealistic viewscapes that are never ordinary, and always intriguing.

Syahbandi takes the ballpoint pen well beyond the implement’s typical role as a writing instrument, fueled by his

determination and hard work, continuously striving to improve his skills as a visual artist. His works may appear dark and

macabre upon initial viewing, but the underlying messages conveyed through a personal symbol set are always positive,

often about coming to terms with who and what one is, and empowered by this acceptance of self, to move forward in the

best manner possible.

Taufik Ermas

b. 1984, Indonesia

Bachelor of Fine Art, Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI), Yogyakarta

In 2006, Taufik Ermas almost lost his life in the major earthquake that shook the city of Yogyakarta where he lives and

works. The building he was in at the time collapsed, trapping the artist in the rubble. He was quickly rescued, but the

trauma of the experience lives on within him until today.

The event, horrifying as it was for Taufik, also proved to be a pivotal point in his artistic practice, becoming an important

driver in the development of his artistic practice.

Augmentation of canvas shapes and surfaces has become an identifying characteristic of Taufik’s paintings, evident in the

Slice/Layered-Contour series of artworks exhibited this art fair, as well as his earlier Cut-Out series (where the canvas and

frame are modified to create physical negative space).

Using canvas augmentation techniques he developed, Taufik creates embossed ridges (without actual damage to the

canvas), outlines of figurations or patterns relevant to a particular piece, over which he will then paint to complete the

artwork. These traces could be images or fleeting traces of impermanent objects, event, memories... things that are no

longer physically present but remain in our minds.

In addition to being recognized as an artist to watch in Indonesia, in the last few years Taufik Ermas has gradually become

more well-known outside of his home country as well. Among other recent notable events include having a sell-out showing

at Art Fair Philippines 2020, and being selected as one of the finalists in the 2019 edition of The Sovereign Asian Art Prize

out of Hong Kong.
