New funding for
Interior care homes
Care homes and hospice houses
throughout the Interior region have
been awarded $700,000 in special support
through the national LTC+ Acting
on Pandemic Learning Together
program.
LTC+ is an initiative by Healthcare
Excellence Canada launched to help
support the long-term care (LTC) sector
to document and share lessons learned
from delivering care during COVID-19,
with the goal of being better prepared
for pandemics in the future.
“I would like to thank Healthcare
Excellence Canada for launching the
LTC+ program and for the generous
financial support towards seniors care
throughout the Interior,” said Interior
Health president and CEO Susan
Brown. “The people who live, work and
visit care homes and hospice houses
know firsthand the massive impact this
pandemic has had on residents’ quality
of care and the stress it has put on families
and staff. This special support will
go a long way in capturing the lessons
learned from this pandemic to prevent
future challenges in the future.”
Recipient long-term care and assisted
living homes and hospice houses
applied and joined a national initiative
through the LTC+: Acting on Pandemic
Learning Together program. This funding
will support the 70 care homes
in the Interior to build on what has
been learned through COVID-19, and
strengthen their pandemic response in
six key areas of practice: readiness, prevention,
people in the workforce, surge
capacity, care planning, and the presence
of family.
“The pandemic has emphasized the
importance of working collaboratively.
When we work together, we can achieve
so much more,” said Tanya MacDonald,
director of Innovations and Strategic
Development at Healthcare Excellence
Canada. “LTC+ is a true partnership
with organizations such as BC Patient
Safety and Quality Council and the
homes that are participating. We are
working with each other, not for each
other.”
LTC+ is being delivered by Healthcare
Excellence Canada (formerly Canadian
Foundation for Healthcare Improvement
and Canadian Patient Safety
Institute) an independent not-for-profit
charity funded by Health Canada.
LTC+ is supported by partners,
including the BC Patient Safety and
Quality Council, Manitoba Institute for
Patient Safety, New Brunswick Association
of Nursing Homes and Canadian
Agency for Drugs
and Technologies
in Health, with
additional funding
support from
the Canadian
Medical Association
Foundation.
City of Trail
prepares for BC’s
Restart Plan
The City of Trail is thrilled with the
Provincial Health Officer’s (PHO) latest
news announcing the gradual loosening
of COVID-19 restrictions. We continue
to monitor the guidelines and recommendations
coming from the province
in order to carefully consider their
impact on our community, our user
groups, and our facilities and staff.
We remind everyone that the PHO’s
upcoming benchmark dates, included
in BC’s Restart Plan, of June 15 (Step
2) and July 1 (Step 3) remain tentative,
based entirely on our collective effort to
remain healthy and safe.
We kindly request diligence and
patience throughout these next few
weeks, as City staff teams work to
develop safe and reasonable plans for
a measured approach to restoration of
city facilities, services, and operations.
We are grateful to live in and serve
this community and we look forward to
welcoming you back.
Updates will be released through the
City’s website and Facebook page as
more information is received and plans
are confirmed.
Imagine,
Joe has a single older woman
living next door, and every day
he sees her water her plants and
have tea on her immaculate deck.
One day Joe realizes he hasn’t
seen her in many days but her
dirty teacup sits on the deck.
What would/can/should Joe do?
Some of us are comfortable just
knocking on her door. Some not.
Shirley goes to a local coffee
outlet every day. Over a couple
of weeks, coffee shop staff
noticed Shirley’s appearance was
changing. She was becoming
unkempt, appeared cold, dirty,
and hungry. Staff decided to
approach her to see if there was
something they could help with.
She confided in them that her son
had taken over her house and she
was now living in the basement
without proper cooking or bathing
facilities.
Because Joe and the coffee shop
staff had learned what to do from
a CRN workshop, they were able
to get Joe’s neighbour and Shirley
the help they needed.
Presentations: It’s Not Right,
Gatekeeper, Volunteering Is Good
for YOU!
Let’s talk about ageism, how to
recognize and respond to potential
elder abuse, creating healthy
boundaries for working with and
for seniors, and how to open the
door to difficult conversations
which can prevent/stop abuse.
What is elder abuse? What are
the signs, types and symptoms
of elder abuse? What should or
shouldn’t you do? Who do you
call? How do you open the door
to conversations? Who is responsible
to investigate allegations of
elder abuse, neglect, self-neglect?
The pandemic has made our older
adults even more vulnerable
to abuse and neglect. This is your
invitation to do your part in creating
communities where all adults
are safe, included and respected.
The Big Bad Wolf: How Big and How Bad? Written by Ken Sumanik
How big? As big as a big German Sheppard
dog, although males can exceed 100 pounds
(45.5 kilos) but they are generally about 70 or
80 pounds (31.2 to 36.3 kilos), How bad? Their
evil is legendary, based on historical accounts
of killing humans, and ravaging their livestock,
and therefore reason enough to use whatever
means to cull them. Wolves and Brown bears
were eradicated centuries ago in the British
Isles and other western Old-World countries.
The absence of both species enabled livestock
and deer production that continues to this day
in the British Isles. However, European Union
member countries have to comply with an
obligation in 1995 to reinstate their wolf and
bear populations. Ecosystem restoration to
maintain biodiversity was the rationale for this
change in game management policy that is
failing to achieve expectations. Wolves have
dispersed across Europe preying on livestock,
wild ungulates and even family pets, but more
ominously are hybridizing which is sure to result
in a different wolf.
Wolves were eradicated by the mid 1950s in the
New World, USA except for Alaska and most of
Canada. A reversal began when wolves were
legally protected in the USA by the Endangered
Species Act (ESA) in1973. The results are equally
devastating on people whose livelihoods are
dependent on wild and domestic ungulates.
Ecosystem restoration to maintain biodiversity
was the same rationale used by the USF&WS
in 1995 to transplant Canadian wolves into Yellowstone
National Park (YNP) that subsequently
decimated ungulate populations, particularly
and elk. Wolves dispersed beyond the park
boundary onto private lands to prey on livestock
and game animals, mainly elk, deer and
moose impacting the livelihoods of ranchers,
farmers and outfitters.
That it has taken four decades to realize the
profoundly negative impact of wolf predation
based on centuries of experience is astounding.
The following are examples of where deer and
moose abundance is maintained in an absence
of wolves, by effective management of black
bears and coyotes that are the only predators.
Anticosti Island , Quebec
The island is a very sparsely inhabited situated in
the Gulf of St. Lawrence. It is about 7,892 square
kms or 3047 Services square miles that is physiographically
similar to the rest of the region. Indigenous
wildlife were eradicated by 1890 but upon acquisition
in 1895 by Henri Menier, a keen hunter
who stocked it with 220 white-tailed deer. Presently
there are approximately 120,000, whitetails,
20 per sq. Km, down from a high about
160,000, and 1000 moose. Hunting is managed
by Sépaq, a Quebec government agency.
Newfoundland (Island)
The island was a British Colony until 1949 when
it joined the Canadian Confederation. It is
108,860 sq. Kms, typically boreal forest with a
human population of about 550,000. Its moose
population of about 110,000 animals is estimated
at 1.1 per sq. Km, down from a previous high
of about 140,000, thirty years ago. Moose were
introduced to the island in the early 1900s, from
a source in New Brunswick to establish guided
hunting as an industry that succeeded but also
became a significant sustenance resource. The
government boasts, “A license for every two
moose”! Approximately 70,000 licenses are sold,
and 19,000 moose harvested annually. Heavy
browsing by moose has impacted the forests
in Gros Morne and Bonavista National Parks so
forest restoration is being done by reducing
their numbers in both parks. A woodland caribou
population of approximately 16,000 is also
hunted. Black bears exist and prey on caribou
and moose but the threat to both species is
reduced as bears are also hunted. Wolves don’t
exist on the island but a fear of them crossing a
possible frozen Strait of Belle Isle from Labrador
to the island is a concern.
Cape Breton Island (CBI, Nova Scotia)
The island is 10,311 sq. Kms situated at the
northeastern tip of Nova Scotia. It is connected
to the province by a causeway that crosses
the Canso Strait. Indigenous wolf and moose
populations were eradicated in the late 1890s.
An introduction of 18 moose from Elk Island National
Park, Alberta in 1947- 48 established a viable
population. A spruce budworm infestation
during the 1970s was beneficial to the moose
population, and as predation was minimal, it increased
to approximately 5000 animals by 2010.
Over browsing the forest of Cape Breton Island
National Park (CBINP) required reducing moose
numbers, as in NL National Parks. A moose
population survey by Parks Canada in 2015
recorded 1800 animals, approximately two per
sq. Km. A repeat survey in 2019 recorded only
481 animals. 2019. The survey data confirms that
a serious decrease in the CBI moose population
has occurred over the five year period.
Summary
Residents of these three widely separated
islands in Eastern Canada continue to benefit
from abundant moose
and deer populations, the
result of introductions
attempted during the
early Services 1900s. Their purpose
was to produce game
populations as a source of
sustenance and revenue.
The species adapted and
thrived. Foxes, black bears
and coyotes also exist on
several of the islands and
are not considered serious
threats to ungulate survival
for they are also hunted
and trapped. Hunting
is the primary source of
Services
ungulate mortality, regulated
by governments
intent on maintaining
high levels of game production expected of a
discerning hunting public, density independent
factors notwithstanding. Should game
populations decline to unsatisfactory levels,
governments and their regulators will be held
to account, not foxes, coyotes and black bears.
The remarkable success of the deer and moose
introductions to these islands coincident with
an absence of wolves, has exceed expectations.
Habitat was not a limiting factor.
Impacts of Wolf Predation on Prey and People
Wolves were eradicated from the US lower forty-eight
by 1955 to enable livestock and game
production to sustain our unique western way
of life. The impact of the other major predators,
cougars, grizzly and black bears and coyotes
was managed by a combination of regulated
hunting, trapping and bounties as required
to produce abundant game populations as a
source of food, and to maintain our hunting
heritage. The use of fur, fish and game species
in perpetuity required controlling predators
for that purpose. This NAGM model was used
successfully for five decades but is seriously
threatened as human needs are increasingly
subordinated to ecosystem related interests.
State game managers had to comply with the
wolf protection policy under the ESA. This was
a serious impediment to game management
practices that resulted in severe decimations
caused by wolf predation. Provincial agencies
accommodated similar wolf predation policy
constraints that resulted in significant decreases
in moose, elk and deer populations, and the
near demise of caribou populations nationwide,
except for NL (Island).
Efforts to restore game populations are just
beginning in several States where wolves have
been delisted; ID, MT, WY and WI. Recently the
Government of Idaho proclaimed a cull of 90
per cent of the wolves based on factual information
of severe wolf predation. The following
link records Idaho elk population collapse that
compares with elk in the East Kootenay in BC
and adjoining US States. (see link #1)
Services
Similarly, Montana and Wyoming state governments
recently committed to reducing their
wolf populations. (See link #2 as Montana steps
up)
Link #2: https://www.boisestatepublicradio.
org/post/montana-governor-given-written-warning-after-trapping-killing-yellowstone-wolf#stream/0
Wolves are hunted and trapped in BC, but
recently subjected to culling by government in
specific areas under a Primary Predator Reduction
Program as a woodland caribou population
recovery measure. Objectors to the culling were
anticipated. (See link #3)
Link #3: https://www.nationalobserver.
com/2021/05/03/news/bc-kills-237-wolveswhile-court-case-pending
The North West Territory government is also
considering a wolf cull program to restore caribou
populations.
Wolves are also a major factor in the drastic decrease
in BC moose populations that was finally
acknowledged by the government. Recommendations
for restoration were provided by a
consultant on July 5, 2016. (See link #4)
on government and hunter-maintained websites,
as reports and commentaries. (See link #5)
Ponderations?
Can a wolf be bad…or good? This is a rhetorical
question because a wolf cannot be held to
any moral standard for pursuing and killing its
prey. The logical answer must be, neither good
nor bad, even if the prey is a human. However,
outcomes of wolf behaviors that are harmful to
humans must be addressed empirically.
The Drive-in comes
back to Trail!
The Trail & District Arts Council and The Royal Theatre have
joined forces to imagine your new, favourite summer experience,
the Silver Screen Drive-in. Running from June 18 to September
25, films will screen Thursday through Saturday at dusk in the
Waneta Plaza upper parking lot.
Building on the history of the Auto-Vue Drive-in, which ran in
the same area from 1952 to 2003, this collaboration will bring the
best in blockbuster and independent movies and more to Trail on a
40-foot inflatable screen!
The project came about due to COVID-19 restrictions preventing
the Royal Theatre and Trail & District Arts Council from putting
on their usual programming. A drive-in event is one that has
been allowed to operate throughout the pandemic and is something
that enables both organizations to continue to bring entertainment
to the area. As well, the event will help businesses by
bringing people into Trail from local surrounding areas to enjoy
dinner beforehand and will be an ongoing project in the future
to help attract visitors. The start-up equipment for the drive-in
was purchased with grant funds from BC Arts Council’s PIVOT
program.
Upcoming films will include those event movies that you’ve
missed seeing on a big screen, retro classics from comedy to horror,
as well as those Sunday Cinema favourites and Oscar winning
independent films and documentaries. We will also be featuring
recorded concerts, dance, and theatre performances, putting
much needed revenues into artists pockets.
The Drive-in will roar into high gear on the first weekend
with family favourites E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial on Friday, June
18 and Sonic The Hedgehog on Saturday June 19. The following
weeks have a wide range of films confirmed that include: Minari,
American Graffiti, Wonder Women 1984, Alone Across The Arctic,
Strange Brew, Detective Pikachu 2D, The Father, Ferris Bueller’s
Day Off, Croods: A New Age, The Barkley Marathons, The
Goonies, and Tenet.
Under the current health restrictions attendance will be limited.
Tickets are $12 per person and will be on sale starting Monday,
June 7 at thebailey.ca.
CFNKLS Treasure Hunt starts
on Canada Day!
A beautifully crafted treasure box has been hidden somewhere in
the North Kootenay Lake area – that is, in RDCK Area D. Inside is
$250 for the finder to keep and instructions for what to do next. The
hunt will begin July 1st. On that day, treasure hunters will find the
first clues on the treasure hunt webpage (www.nkltreasure.wordpress.
com), on the CFNKLS Facebook page, and posted around Kaslo.
The Community Fund of North Kootenay Lake Society (CFNKLS)
supports charitable giving which can be a source of pleasure and pride
for people of all ages. To this end, CFNKLS has created a Treasure
Fund, separate from the $250 in the treasure box. The finder of the
treasure box will donate the Treasure Fund to a local charity of their
choice.
We ask you to help grow this Treasure Fund. Donations (of $20 or
more are eligible for a charitable tax receipt) can be sent to CFNKLS,
Box 661, Kaslo, BC, VOG 1M0. Please include your name and address
and state clearly that the donation is meant for the Treasure Fund.
CFNKLS thanks you for any donation, large or small, to help us grow
the Treasure Fund.
Further details can be found on the Treasure Hunt website, www.
nkltreasure.wordpress.com. More information about CFNKLS can be
found at www.nklcommunityfund.org, and on our Facebook page.
Kerry Reed’s Fishing
Report for June
Hey everybody! It’s June and seems like
summer is almost here. We had some pretty
hot days to finish the month of May, and June
has started off with some pretty hot weather as
well. Although, the past few days have cooled
off and feels more like spring again. The water
warmed up to its optimal temperature, and
the fish have been feeding consistently.
Here’s the latest report:
Kootenay Lake:
The water temperature has been perfect
lately. Except for the screaming hot days, the
fishing has been very consistent for us. We’ve
seen some chunky rainbows coming in lately,
and a few big bull trout as well. The rainbows
are still the average Kootenay size of 2 – 3 lbs,
but we’ve hooked a few over 4 lbs lately. However,
the bull trout seem to finding some food
and have been a bit larger. Biggest one being
around 10 lbs in the last few weeks.
Watch for kokanee fry entering the lake at
this time of year, and that should put the bull
trout and bigger rainbows into a bit of a feeding
frenzy.
We also had another flying ant hatch
recently. This brought all the fish to the surface
and fishing was fantastic for a few days
while they were chomping. If you managed
to time it right, the fish were gorging themselves.
But, if you were a few days late to the
party, then you would’ve noticed the fish were
stuffed and not interested in eating for a few
days. So, some mixed reports. A couple hot
days of fishing, and then a couple slow days of
fishing. It’s all about the timing.
June is another of our favourite months on
the lake and should continue to provide some
good fishing until the water gets too warm.
Stay tuned….
Lower Arrow Lake:
Some fun fishing
happening over on
Arrow Lake right now
as well. The kokanee
fishing has been very
good, with limits of
fish coming in a couple
hours. Also, while
kokanee fishing, a
lot of people are hooking into some decent
rainbows as well. It all makes for an exciting
outing.
With the good numbers of smaller kokanee
in the lake, the bull trout are also putting on
the feedbags. One of our guys managed to
land a beauty bull around 16 lbs the other day,
as well as a bunch of smaller bulls. Those are
some quality fish.
Kokanee fishing should remain good on
the Arrow, and the rainbow/bull trout fishing
should be pretty decent until the weather gets
too hot.
So, get out there…
Columbia River:
The river has been producing some good
rainbows lately. Some of the most popular
pools are providing some excellent fishing
with nymphs. And, some good hatches have
been happening lately as well and providing
some good dry fly fishing. Rainbows between
16 – 24 inches have been the norm.
Walleye fishing has been picking up a bit as
well. There
have been a
lot of boats
out there
on the fair
weather
days.
Most walleye
were
between 16 and 20
inches as well, however
there’s been a few bigger
ones caught. My
favourite walleye fishing
doesn’t begin until
August/September, but
there’s still a bunch out
there to be caught at
this time.
What are they biting on?
Surface fishing is where it’s
at. Kootenay Lake fish have
been chomping on the bucktail
flies during the choppy
days. Our favorite colours
lately have been the #15,
#21, #26.
We’re always running a
couple bucktails on the surface,
however our favourite
spoons have been providing
some killer action as well. It
seems like the spoons work
for the first couple hours of
the day, then the flies turn
on later in the day.
Favourite spoons lately
have been the Gibbs Delta
Skinny ‘G’ in the Outfitter,
No Bananas, and Herring
Aid patterns. I like to run
these spoons directly out the
back of the boat and right on
the surface.
On the river, it’s been good fly fishing with
an indicator and nymph. Also spin casting
with 3/8oz Gibbs/Delta crocs has been providing
some good fish. The walleye have been
coming in on the bottom bouncers or some of
our yellow curly tail grubs.
Fishing season is upon us, so let’s get out
there!
Would your acreage benefit from soil amendment?
Mercer Celgar is looking for landowners with 2 or more acres within 55 km
that would benefit from using their Celgrow soil amendment. Pastures and
hay fields are good options.
Mercer Celgar will cover the costs of a Qualified Professional performing
soil sampling, obtaining government authorization and delivery costs of Celgrow
soil amendment based on access with a large truck/pup combination.
Acreage should be able to accommodate at least 6 truck/pup loads. The two
major components of Celgrow are individual wood fibres lost from the pulping
process and surplus bacteria from the wastewater biological treatment
facility. Wood fibres enhance soil moisture retention and bacteria are a good
source of soil nutrients. The landowner is responsible for spreading and incorporating
Celgrow into their soil.
Category 3 burning prohibited
Effective Friday, June 11, 2021, Category
3 open burning, as defined in the Wildfire
Regulation, will be prohibited throughout
the Southeast Fire Centre, which includes the
Rocky Mountain Natural Resource District
and the Selkirk Natural Resource District.
The BC Wildfire Service is implementing
this prohibition to help prevent wildfires
caused by Category 3 burning and to protect
public safety. A map indicating the areas
affected by this prohibition is available online:
http://ow.ly/yTjI50F3h3q
Specifically, prohibited activities that would
constitute a Category 3 open fire include:
• any fire larger than two metres high by
three metres wide
• three or more concurrently burning
piles no larger than two metres high by
three metres wide
• burning of one or more windrows, and
• burning of stubble or grass over an
area greater than 0.2 hecatres
Anyone holding a Category 3 registration
number anywhere in the Southeast Fire Centre’s
jurisdiction must ensure their piles are
extinguish by the June 11, 2021 deadline and
may not light past this date. This prohibition
will remain in effect until noon on Oct. 9,
2021, or until the order is rescinded.
This prohibition applies to all
public and private land, unless
specified otherwise (e.g., in a
local government bylaw). Check with local
government authorities for any other restrictions
before lighting any fire.
This prohibition does not ban campfires
that are a half-metre high by a high-metre
wide or smaller, and does not apply to cooking
stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes.
This prohibition also does not ban Category
2 fires, which include one or two concurrently
burning piles up to two metres high
by three metres wide each, or the burning
of stubble or grass in an area less than 0.2
hectares.
A poster explaining the different categories
of open burning is available online: http://
ow.ly/znny309kJv5
Anyone found in contravention of an open
fire prohibition may be issued a ticket for
$1,150, required to pay an administrative
penalty of $10,000 or, if convicted in court,
fined up to $100,000 and/or sentenced to one
year in jail. If the contravention causes or
contributes to a wildfire, the person responsible
may be ordered to pay all firefighting and
associated costs.
The Southeast Fire Centre would like to
thank the public for its continuing help in
preventing wildfires. To report a wildfire or
open burning violation, call 1 800 663-5555
Help for Legions
The BC provincial government has released
a statement providing new relief funding for
Legion branches in BC. This will help ensure
our branches can continue to provide essential
services to our veterans and their families,
and community services across BC.
Like many in the food and beverage industry,
Royal Canadian Legion branches in BC
have been navigating this challenging economic
crisis. The updated public order for
Food and Liquor Serving Premises released
on April 21, 2021 directly affected Legions,
but they did not receive access to the Government
aid provided to the “industry” through
the Circuit Breaker Business Relief Grant
because of their non-profit status.
The 143 Legion branches within BC raise
over $2.5 million for veterans and their families
through the annual poppy campaign.
Branches also raise and distribute additional
funds throughout the year giving back over
$1 million to their local communities in BC.
The BC government issued funding of $1.5
million to assist our branches and ensure the
sustainability of our mission. These funds will
be received by BC/Yukon Command of the
Royal Canadian Legion and be distributed
based on need.
Rossland Fire Dept
history on display
Forged in Fire: The Rossland Fires covers the history of Rossland’s
significant fires and the beginning of the Rossland Fire
Department.
Like many boomtowns, Rossland was plagued with fires in
its early days. Mining camps were especially affected by fires
due to quickly-built and makeshift structures largely constructed
of wood. Insurance companies urged the town to
make fire upgrades, and in 1896 the Rossland Fire Department
was formed as a volunteer force. Still, Rossland’s downtown
was hit by huge fires in 1902, 1927, and 1929, altering the
building landscape and forcing additional fire safety upgrades.
The most notable difference was the loss of the upper floor of
the Post Office in 1929. The history of the fires and Rossland’s
firefighters is a tale of perseverance, calamity, and community.
While we could not bring one of the fire trucks in our collection
downtown, Forged in Fire features photographs and artifacts
from our extensive fire department collection. We have
created a map showing the locations of the major Rossland
fires to help explain where key fires took place.
This exhibit will be on display in the front window of the
Prestige Mountain Resort during the summer of 2021. Follow
that up with a visit to the museum to check out our fire trucks
and additional equipment!
Invasive Asian Clams Found in
Kootenay Waterbody
The Ministry of Environment (MOE) confirmed that invasive
Asian clams (Corbicula fluminea) were found in the Pend
D’Oreille River this spring. This is the first confirmed presence
of live invasive freshwater clams in the Central Kootenay
region. However, this is not the first confirmation of these
clams in B.C.: they exist in the lower mainland, and in 2020,
they were found in Shuswap Lake. The MOE is assessing distribution
and have conducted preliminary surveys near the
Salmo River confluence.
The non-native clams are a concern to the Central Kootenay
Invasive Species Society (CKISS), a local non-profit that works
to prevent the spread of invasive species in the region. The
clams can clog water treatment systems, contaminate drinking
water, and negatively alter aquatic ecosystems by competing
with native species for food and habitat.
In response to the recent discovery, CKISS is urging watercraft
users and anglers to Clean, Drain, and Dry all gear and
watercraft every time they leave a lake or river. The larvae of
this species are microscopic and could hitchhike in the smallest
amount of water in your watercraft, surviving to populate
another lake. A single clam can create a new population due to
self-fertilization, producing up to 70,000 eggs per year.
Asian clams are found in the pet trade as an aquarium
species, which is another potential pathway for this invasive
species to spread. CKISS wants to remind aquarium owners
to never dump the contents of their aquarium (animals and
plants) into natural places including waterways.
BC’s Family Fishing Weekend
and Father’s Day :)
B.C.’s Family Fishing Weekend is an annual celebration of
fishing that coincides with Father’s Day weekend each year. In
2021, this falls on June 18 - 20. During the three-day event,
residents of Canada (individuals who have lived in Canada for
the preceding 12 months) can go fishing without a licence.
Fish for Free During Father’s Day Weekend - June 18 - 20,
2021
The provincial government waives the requirement for residents
to buy or carry a non-tidal (freshwater) basic licence
during the third weekend in June, and the Friday immediately
prior. The federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada,
which manages tidal fishing, also offers the opportunity to
go saltwater fishing for free. This is a great opportunity to get
together with family and friends and try fishing!
Exceptions: If you plan to fish for species that require a conservation
surcharge stamp (steelhead, Shuswap Lake rainbow trout
and char, Kootenay Lake rainbow trout, white sturgeon, and
salmon in both tidal and non-tidal waters); or angle Classified
Waters (highly productive trout streams; listed as Class I or Class
II waters in the water-specific tables of the fishing regulations)
you are still required to purchase the appropriate licence(s) and
conservation surcharge stamps
Please
compost
According to Canadian statistics
organic material can
make up to 40% of household
waste. Eliminating this
material from our garbage
we throw out is a great way to
reduce large volumes of material
going to landfill. Many
municipalities and individuals
compost to remove
organic wastes from landfill
bulk and to do away with
methane emissions caused by
organic waste decomposing
in landfills.
Turning organic waste into
compost has many benefits.
Compost is a nutrient rich
soil amendment for the earth
that stores carbon. Mixing
carbon (Browns) and nitrogen
(Greens) are the ingredients
to make it work. Simple
aeration, heat and moisture
help break down the organic
material. Microorganisms
and invertebrates like worms
and sow bugs that eat food
scraps and yard wastes can
help the process along. These
invertebrates excrete odourless
castings that also become
part of the organic mixture.
Added to soil, this compost
improves nutrient content
and soil structure. It’s a great
fertilizer for growing plants
and it’s ours for the making.
We keep a pail with a lid
under our kitchen sink and
put all vegetable and fruit
waste in it. In order to avoid
attracting wildlife once it
goes outdoors, we do not add
any meat or dairy product.
We are careful to remove,
plastic tags, twist ties and to
avoid tea bags that are made
of petroplastic derivatives.
We also cut large pieces up
and occasionally add small
pieces of paper. When the
bucket is full of fresh material
full of nitrogen, we empty it
into the first bin of a three
stage vermicomposter, then
give it a stir and throw in a
handful of browns. Browns
make up carbon rich material
and can be; dry leaves, shredded
paper, sawdust, or straw.
Red wriggler worms in our
bins help create air passages,
break down the material and
certainly micro-organisms
and bugs contribute to the
process. We check once in
a while to see how they are
doing and make sure that the
bin is moist, there are no hot
spots and the aroma is sweet.
Once the bin is full, we top
it all up with straw or soil or
aged sawdust, then dampen
and let the biology feast
occur undisturbed. Then we
start a new bin and repeat the
process. It only takes a summer
season to transform the
first pile into valuable garden
amendment.
We also keep a covered hot
pile on the ground where we
deposit all weeds and large
garden refuse. This pile is
poked and watered occasionally.
The internal heat and
moisture of the pile kill weed
seeds and break down the
organic material into usable
soil amendments. This pile is
turned after a seasons accumulation.
This pile takes two
seasons to be ready for the
garden.
Kaslo already manages
some yard waste with spring
and fall pickups and is presently
determining if some
kind of municipal composting
support could work here.
In the meantime many local
people are eliminating their
organic waste from their
garbage, through backyard
composting systems like ours
or participating in the Community
Garden composting
systems. There are many
ways and appliances to compost.
he Compost Council of
Canada website will give you
an overview of different ways.
