WAYJO 2021 Season Brochure

Since 1983, the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra (WAYJO) has been at the forefront of Australia’s emerging jazz performers, conductors and composers. The 2021 season is no exception, bringing together traditional and contemporary jazz with an exciting roster of WAYJO alumni guest artist.

Demonstrating the versatile possibilities of the big band format, this is a season of jazz with something for everyone, spanning traditional repertoire through to an upbeat dancing selection of Latin and World Jazz.

WAYJO also present a generous serve of original, commissioned work from alumni Alana Macpherson and Kate Pass, plus premiere two new emerging composers at the Modern Masters show as part of the continuing Composer in Residence program (recipients announced end of May).

Tickets are already selling, and if previous seasons are anything to go by, you'd be wise to book your favourite shows soon so you won't miss out!

Please visit https://wayjo.com for more information.

Inclusivity Statement

WAYJO is a safe and inclusive creative space.

We strive to be inclusive and diverse,

but know we can always do better.

We want music to bring people together,

no matter their gender, cultural or social background,

sexual orientation or physical ability.

Artistic Director

Dr Mace Francis

We start the year with the return of many of our 2020 band members. This

is the first time that we start the year without holding auditions because

of 2020’s shortened performance period. We hope that this is a one off as

we know there is so much amazing young talent coming out of the schools

every year.

The program this year brings together the familiar and the new. WAYJO

returns to familiar spaces Downstairs at The Maj and The Quarry

Amphitheatre and reintroduce The Rechabite and Lyric Lane. All these

great venues cater to different concerts and different audiences, and we

are excited to spice things up this year.

We have a program that showcases each of our three big bands and shows

the versatility and possibilities of the big band format. We have something

for everyone from The Golden Age of Swing to A Latin Explosion,

plus an epic collaboration with Kate Pass and the Kohesia Ensemble,

presenting big band Persian music - and we thank Major Programs Partner

Minderoo Foundation for their ongoing support. We then close the year with

a huge performance featuring the WAAPA Jazz and Gospel Choirs.

We also launch a brand new program called WAYJO Club, open to any

young musician who aspires to be in a WAYJO band in the near or distant

future. WAYJO Club will run as a series of online and in person interactions

throughout the year.

I am really excited to be able to bring you this program of amazing talent

and exciting music in 2021. Our three exceptional WAYJO bands are filled

to the brim again with immensely talented young musicians, so I hope to

see you at one of our many performances.

WAYJO provides opportunities for the

jazz stars of tomorrow to work alongside

Australia’s greats. This strikes a chord with

us because at MinterEllison, we know

how important it is to learn from the best.

Every year, we open our doors to recent

graduates who’ve come to learn from our

senior, trusted Partners.

We’re proud to support WAYJO’s work in

inspiring Australia’s musical future.

into WAYJO

Inclusivity & Connection

WAYJO is not just about membership in one of our bands. WAYJO offers

opportunities to develop musicality, embrace cooperation, learn leadership

skills, encourage persistence, and also create long lasting friendships.

Some musicians may be part of a WAYJO band for one year, others for up

to ten.

No matter how long your tenure is, you are a part of our WAYJO family.

Every musician who passes through WAYJO is important to us.

In striving for ways to make the pathway into WAYJO clearer, more positive

and inclusive, we proudly introduce WAYJO Pathways.

Pathway programs help young musicians strive towards their goals in

musicianship through expanded experience, and to become better musicians

and people. These programs include the new WAYJO Club and the ongoing

Young Women in Jazz workshops.

WAYJO welcomes young musicians no matter their gender, cultural or

social background, sexual orientation or physical ability. We look forward to

welcoming all musicians interested in performing, composing, conducting

and leading our bands into a united future.

The WAYJO Club is a semester long (or annual) program for young aspiring

musicians, aged 12-18 years, who want to learn more about jazz, big band

playing, improvisation, and network with like-minded musicians.

The WAYJO Club includes monthly digital resources for members that

inform and build towards two Jazz Day Camps. At these camps, all

participants come together and work with our professional artistic staff to

improve their skills and build friendships with other musicians from around

Perth and the state.

Registrations for Semester 1 close February 15, 2021

Young Women in Jazz

Since 2014, WAYJO’s Young Women in Jazz workshops have provided an

environment for instrumentalists identifying as female (aged 14-25) to

come together under the direction of some of Perth’s leading artists to

develop skills in improvisation and performance.

Across eight Saturday afternoon workshops, participants build their

support networks with like-minded peers, refine their skill and develop

greater confidence.

8 Weeks of Saturday Workshops run from 1 May to 26 June.

The final Concert is held at the Ellington Jazz Club, Sunday 27 June.

Registrations close April 16, 2021 at wayjo.com/young-women-in-jazz

Young Women in Jazz is supported by St John of God Heath Care

& presented in association with the Sydney Improvised Music Association.

We also thank ECU WAAPA as venue Partner.

WAYJO Act-Belong-Commit

2021 Regional Tour

WAYJO’s Act-Belong-Commit Regional Touring is undoubtedly the highlight

of the year for many of our members. Not only does it offer band members

the opportunity to hone their performance skills and meet new audiences,

but also allows time for members to get to know one another, and form

friendships that can last a lifetime.

This year the WAYJO MinterEllison Monday Night Orchestra set off at

the start of May to visit the South-West region of WA. They’ll be visiting

schools in Australind, Bunbury, Busselton, Margaret River, Nannup and

Manjimup on a five night tour. They also perform two free community

concerts, one at HEART in Margaret River on Wednesday the 5th of May

and then at Bunbury Recreation and Entertainment Centre on Friday the

7th of May.

WAYJO’s Tuesday Night Orchestra also head up to Geraldton in September

to visit several schools, as well as perform at the Queens Park Theatre.

WAYJO thanks Healthway Act-Belong-Commit for supporting our Regional Touring program
