Each model year vehicles evolve a lile further. 

What once was popular or essenal gets updated 

with something new and a lile more innovave. 

While certain car parts may always be necessary, others 

may age out or evolve over the years. 

One of the challenges automove repair professionals 

oen face is the constant need to stay abreast 

of the changes in automove design. As features 

change, so does the knowledge required to keep 

vehicles on the road. The following are some of the 

components you likely won’t find rolling off of the assembly 

line these days. 

• Carburetor: Vehicles previously used a carburetor, 

which was a bulky device that sat on top of the 

engine. Classic cars have carburetors, but modern 

ones do not. Most car manufacturers stopped using 

carburetors in the 1980s because fuel injector systems 

proved to be more efficient and improved fuel 

economy. Carburetors created an air-fuel mixture 

needed for engine combuson. Very oen carburetors 

were the culprits in poor engine performance 

because they weren’t creang the right air and fuel 

mixture. Also, jets on the carburetor could easily 

become clogged. 

• Generator: Modern automobiles no longer use a 

generator, which is a device used to produce electricity 

through the rotaon of fine wires in a magnec 

field. Cars today use alternators. Instead of an armature 

rotang inside a staonary magnec field as with 

a generator, an alternator has a magnec field that 

rotates around a staonary armature, according to 

the online resource Electrical Technology. Alternators 

are more efficient because they can produce more 

power, even charging a car baery, at low engine 

speeds and idling. 

• Audible turn signals: Turn signals, also called 

blinkers, typically have a clicking sound to alert the 

driver that the signal is sll engaged and needs to be 

switched off aer a turn. However, many modern cars 

are phasing out audible turn signals. 

• Car keys: Newer vehicles do not have stamped 

metal keys, which have been replaced by electronic 

fobs. When the fob is near to the vehicle, doors 

automacally unlock. The fob is used in combina- 

on with a push-buon ignion, making a key start 

obsolete. 

• Full size spare res: Not too long ago, if a flat 

re required a roadside change, drivers could rely on 

a full-sized spare in the trunk or under the vehicle. 

According to AAA, spare res have been replaced by 

re inflator kits on millions of vehicles in the last 10 

model years. Finding a full-sized spare is a rare occurrence. 

• Control knobs: Radios, heang and cooling systems 

and other car features are increasingly being ac- 

vated by buons or digital displays. Gone are knobs 

and actual levers. This may be one feature that may 

have decreased safety and efficiency. Buons rather 

than easily manipulated knobs require drivers to take 

their eyes off the road to find them and engage. 

People in the market for new vehicles should 

familiarize themselves with features that already are 

exnct or are slowly becoming obsolete.

The pros and cons of 

irrigation systems 

Maintaining a lush, green lawn and thriving 

landscape that includes shrubbery, flowers and 

trees requires me, money and oen some sweat 

equity. However, the beauty that results from such 

effort compels many homeowners to take on the 

landscaping challenge. 

Forgeng to water the greenery or geng hit 

with a drought can cause a lawn to deteriorate 

rapidly. An irrigaon system may seem like a smart 

investment, but homeowners should weigh the 

pros and cons of such systems before having one 

installed. 

Irrigaon systems are installed to protect landscaping 

so plants can thrive year-round. Irrigaon 

systems come in various forms, from sprinkler to 

drip to surface irrigaon systems. No system is 

necessarily beer than another. That’s because 

each is designed to address specific watering 

needs. 

Here’s a look at various irrigaon systems and 

the pros and cons of each. 

Sprinkler system 

Sprinklers are popular because they tend to 

be very affordable and easy to set up. Manual 

sprinkler systems ulize a hose and sprinkler head, 

while automac systems are programmed and 

do all the work once they’re installed. Sprinklers 

cover a lot of ground and can irrigate large spaces 

quickly. However, that same benefit can be a 

disadvantage as well. 

Sprinklers are indiscriminate in their watering, 

somemes hing pavement or driveways. 

Also, the Gardening Channel says that water 

from sprinklers is lost due to evaporaon on hot, 

windy days. In fact, as much as 80 percent of the 

water used may not make it onto the grass or 

plants. 

Surface irrigaon system 

Somemes called gravity irrigaon, these 

systems use channels or furrows throughout the 

culvaon area. Once the water runs through 

these channels, gravity distributes it accordingly. 

Surface irrigaon systems require minimal effort 

but are best suited for farms and commercial 

enterprises because they require a large reservoir 

or pond to accumulate water. Also, uneven terrains 

could divert the water. 

Drip irrigaon system 

This type of irrigaon system is used primarily 

in arid regions. It is made up of lateral lines of 

flexible or rigid polyethylene pipe. Drip irrigaon 

allows homeowners to focus watering on a par- 

cular garden area. It provides moisture directly to 

the soil. Therefore, there is no water waste from 

runoff or evaporaon. Drip irrigaon waters plants 

slowly and can cause less soil erosion and reduce 

nutrient leeching. 

While easier and more effecve than some 

other irrigaon methods over the long haul, a 

drip irrigaon system has a substanal startup 

cost. In addion, the system can get clogged at 

mes. When gardening season is finished, a drip 

irrigaon system will need to be drained and 

dismantled. 

Irrigaon systems can help care for plants and 

lawns. However, they can be costly and some 

require significant maintenance. Weather and 

pests also can reduce the effecveness of yard 

irrigaon systems by damaging equipment or 

direcng water in direcons homeowners did not 

intend. Customers are urged to do their research 

regarding which system, if any, is best for their 

properes.

The risks of 

an overly 

sedentary 

lifestyle 

Health experts call it “sing disease.” It refers 

to when people spend more of their me behind 

a desk or steering wheel of a car or planted in 

front of a television than they do engaging in 

physical acvity. According to the American Heart 

Associaon, sedentary jobs have increased by 83 

percent since 1950, and technology has reduced 

many people’s need to get up and move. Inacvity 

is taking a considerable toll on public health. 

A study from the University of Cambridge 

equated inacvity with being obese. The Mayo 

Clinic advises that research has linked sedentary 

behavior to a host of health concerns, and found 

those who sat for more than eight hours a day 

with no physical acvity had a risk of dying similar 

to the risks of fatality linked to obesity and smoking. 

Increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, 

abnormal cholesterol levels, and excess body fat 

all can be aributed to inacvity. 

Mental health can be adversely affected by a 

sedentary lifestyle as well. Australian researchers 

surveyed more than 3,300 government employees 

and found men who sat for more than six hours 

a day at work were 90 percent more likely to feel 

moderate psychological distress, such as restlessness, 

nervousness or hopelessness, than those 

who sat for less than three hours a day. 

In addion, a sedentary lifestyle can significantly 

increase a person’s risk for various types 

of cancer. A German meta-analysis of 43 studies 

involving four million people indicated those who 

sit the most have higher propensies to develop 

colon cancer, endometrial cancer and lung cancer. 

Johns Hopkins Medical Center says research 

shows that high levels of exercise at some point in 

the day can lessen some risk, but it’s not enrely 

effecve if most of the rest of the day a person is 

inacve. Risk for cardiovascular disease increases 

significantly for people who spend 10 hours or 

more sing each day. 

Various medical organizaons recommend 

individuals get up and move at any opportunity to 

help reduce risks of inacvity. Erin Michos, M.D., 

M.H.S., associate director of prevenve cardiology 

at the Ciccarone Center for the Prevenon 

of Heart Disease, advises people who are very 

sedentary to aim for 4,000 steps per day. Such 

individuals can then build up to a target of 10,000 

steps daily. 

The Mayo Clinic recommends these strategies
