Each model year vehicles evolve a lile further.<br />

What once was popular or essenal gets updated<br />

with something new and a lile more innovave.<br />

While certain car parts may always be necessary, others<br />

may age out or evolve over the years.<br />

One of the challenges automove repair professionals<br />

oen face is the constant need to stay abreast<br />

of the changes in automove design. As features<br />

change, so does the knowledge required to keep<br />

vehicles on the road. The following are some of the<br />

components you likely won’t find rolling off of the assembly<br />

line these days.<br />

• Carburetor: Vehicles previously used a carburetor,<br />

which was a bulky device that sat on top of the<br />

engine. Classic cars have carburetors, but modern<br />

ones do not. Most car manufacturers stopped using<br />

carburetors in the 1980s because fuel injector systems<br />

proved to be more efficient and improved fuel<br />

economy. Carburetors created an air-fuel mixture<br />

needed for engine combuson. Very oen carburetors<br />

were the culprits in poor engine performance<br />

because they weren’t creang the right air and fuel<br />

mixture. Also, jets on the carburetor could easily<br />

become clogged.<br />

• Generator: Modern automobiles no longer use a<br />

generator, which is a device used to produce electricity<br />

through the rotaon of fine wires in a magnec<br />

field. Cars today use alternators. Instead of an armature<br />

rotang inside a staonary magnec field as with<br />

a generator, an alternator has a magnec field that<br />

rotates around a staonary armature, according to<br />

the online resource Electrical Technology. Alternators<br />

are more efficient because they can produce more<br />

power, even charging a car baery, at low engine<br />

speeds and idling.<br />

• Audible turn signals: Turn signals, also called<br />

blinkers, typically have a clicking sound to alert the<br />

driver that the signal is sll engaged and needs to be<br />

switched off aer a turn. However, many modern cars<br />

are phasing out audible turn signals.<br />

• Car keys: Newer vehicles do not have stamped<br />

metal keys, which have been replaced by electronic<br />

fobs. When the fob is near to the vehicle, doors<br />

automacally unlock. The fob is used in combina-<br />

on with a push-buon ignion, making a key start<br />

obsolete.<br />

• Full size spare res: Not too long ago, if a flat<br />

re required a roadside change, drivers could rely on<br />

a full-sized spare in the trunk or under the vehicle.<br />

According to AAA, spare res have been replaced by<br />

re inflator kits on millions of vehicles in the last 10<br />

model years. Finding a full-sized spare is a rare occurrence.<br />

• Control knobs: Radios, heang and cooling systems<br />

and other car features are increasingly being ac-<br />

vated by buons or digital displays. Gone are knobs<br />

and actual levers. This may be one feature that may<br />

have decreased safety and efficiency. Buons rather<br />

than easily manipulated knobs require drivers to take<br />

their eyes off the road to find them and engage.<br />

People in the market for new vehicles should<br />

familiarize themselves with features that already are<br />

exnct or are slowly becoming obsolete.<br />

Maintaining a lush, green lawn and thriving<br />

landscape that includes shrubbery, flowers and<br />

trees requires me, money and oen some sweat<br />

equity. However, the beauty that results from such<br />

effort compels many homeowners to take on the<br />

landscaping challenge.<br />

rapidly. An irrigaon system may seem like a smart<br />

investment, but homeowners should weigh the<br />

pros and cons of such systems before having one<br />

installed.<br />

Irrigaon systems are installed to protect landscaping<br />

so plants can thrive year-round. Irrigaon<br />

systems come in various forms, from sprinkler to<br />

drip to surface irrigaon systems. No system is<br />

necessarily beer than another. That’s because<br />

each is designed to address specific watering<br />

needs.<br />

Here’s a look at various irrigaon systems and<br />

the pros and cons of each.<br />

Sprinkler system<br />

Sprinklers are popular because they tend to<br />

be very affordable and easy to set up. Manual<br />

sprinkler systems ulize a hose and sprinkler head,<br />

while automac systems are programmed and<br />

do all the work once they’re installed. Sprinklers<br />

cover a lot of ground and can irrigate large spaces<br />

quickly. However, that same benefit can be a<br />

disadvantage as well.<br />

Sprinklers are indiscriminate in their watering,<br />

somemes hing pavement or driveways.<br />

Also, the Gardening Channel says that water<br />

from sprinklers is lost due to evaporaon on hot,<br />

windy days. In fact, as much as 80 percent of the<br />

water used may not make it onto the grass or<br />

plants.<br />

Surface irrigaon system<br />

Somemes called gravity irrigaon, these<br />

systems use channels or furrows throughout the<br />

culvaon area. Once the water runs through<br />

these channels, gravity distributes it accordingly.<br />

Surface irrigaon systems require minimal effort<br />

but are best suited for farms and commercial<br />

enterprises because they require a large reservoir<br />

or pond to accumulate water. Also, uneven terrains<br />

could divert the water.<br />

Drip irrigaon system<br />

This type of irrigaon system is used primarily<br />

in arid regions. It is made up of lateral lines of<br />

flexible or rigid polyethylene pipe. Drip irrigaon<br />

allows homeowners to focus watering on a par-<br />

cular garden area. It provides moisture directly to<br />

the soil. Therefore, there is no water waste from<br />

runoff or evaporaon. Drip irrigaon waters plants<br />

slowly and can cause less soil erosion and reduce<br />

nutrient leeching.<br />

While easier and more effecve than some<br />

other irrigaon methods over the long haul, a<br />

drip irrigaon system has a substanal startup<br />

cost. In addion, the system can get clogged at<br />

mes. When gardening season is finished, a drip<br />

irrigaon system will need to be drained and<br />

dismantled.<br />

Irrigaon systems can help care for plants and<br />

lawns. However, they can be costly and some<br />

require significant maintenance. Weather and<br />

pests also can reduce the effecveness of yard<br />

irrigaon systems by damaging equipment or<br />

direcng water in direcons homeowners did not<br />

intend. Customers are urged to do their research<br />

regarding which system, if any, is best for their<br />

properes.<br />

sedentary<br />

lifestyle<br />

Health experts call it “sing disease.” It refers<br />

to when people spend more of their me behind<br />

a desk or steering wheel of a car or planted in<br />

front of a television than they do engaging in<br />

physical acvity. According to the American Heart<br />

Associaon, sedentary jobs have increased by 83<br />

percent since 1950, and technology has reduced<br />

many people’s need to get up and move. Inacvity<br />

is taking a considerable toll on public health.<br />

A study from the University of Cambridge<br />

equated inacvity with being obese. The Mayo<br />

Clinic advises that research has linked sedentary<br />

behavior to a host of health concerns, and found<br />

those who sat for more than eight hours a day<br />

with no physical acvity had a risk of dying similar<br />

to the risks of fatality linked to obesity and smoking.<br />

Increased blood pressure, high blood sugar,<br />

abnormal cholesterol levels, and excess body fat<br />

all can be aributed to inacvity.<br />

Mental health can be adversely affected by a<br />

sedentary lifestyle as well. Australian researchers<br />

surveyed more than 3,300 government employees<br />

and found men who sat for more than six hours<br />

a day at work were 90 percent more likely to feel<br />

moderate psychological distress, such as restlessness,<br />

nervousness or hopelessness, than those<br />

who sat for less than three hours a day.<br />

In addion, a sedentary lifestyle can significantly<br />

increase a person’s risk for various types<br />

of cancer. A German meta-analysis of 43 studies<br />

involving four million people indicated those who<br />

sit the most have higher propensies to develop<br />

colon cancer, endometrial cancer and lung cancer.<br />

Johns Hopkins Medical Center says research<br />

shows that high levels of exercise at some point in<br />

the day can lessen some risk, but it’s not enrely<br />

effecve if most of the rest of the day a person is<br />

inacve. Risk for cardiovascular disease increases<br />

significantly for people who spend 10 hours or<br />

more sing each day.<br />

Various medical organizaons recommend<br />

individuals get up and move at any opportunity to<br />

help reduce risks of inacvity. Erin Michos, M.D.,<br />

M.H.S., associate director of prevenve cardiology<br />

at the Ciccarone Center for the Prevenon<br />

of Heart Disease, advises people who are very<br />

sedentary to aim for 4,000 steps per day. Such<br />

individuals can then build up to a target of 10,000<br />

steps daily.<br />

The Mayo Clinic recommends these strategies<br />

to reduce the amount of me you spend sing.<br />

• Stand while talking on the phone or watching<br />

television<br />

• Invest in a standing desk<br />

• Get up from sing every 30 minutes<br />

• Walk at lunch or during meengs<br />

Sedentary lifestyles can affect health in many<br />
